Room-and-pillar mining is commonly employed for the extraction of rock salt in undergroundmines. Pillar stress is a major concern in these mines as it is directly related to stability and mineralrecovery. In this study a flat jack method was used to measure pillar stresses in three undergroundrock salt mines in Pakistan. The field work included determination of in-situ stress, in-situ elastic modulus, recording of field variables (pillar length and width, height and width of opening, opening width to height ratio, extraction ratio, and overburden height) and collection of salt block samples. The geomechanical properties of rock salt (uniaxial compressive strength, Young’s modulus, Brazilian tensile strength, and density) were also determined to estimate overburden stress, pillar strength, and factor of safety (both estimated and actual). It was found that the measured pillar stresses are proportional to the overburden stress values, with their magnitude ranging from 6.05 MPa to 11.97 Mpa, and the pillars were found to be stable. Regression analysis was performed to develop statistical models for in-situ stress and in-situ elastic modulus. Finally a quick guideline chart was developed to determine the suitable length of pillar for a given span and required level of safety.

This paper describes the method used for excavating the upper 33m of emergency access shaft E2 for the underground single track tunnel running between Park and Rosebank station of the Gautrain Rapid Rail System. It involves driving steel sheets ahead of the shaft sump into the soils and then excavating inside the ?tub? created by the sheets whilst supporting the sheets above with regularly spaced circular Steel Rings. It is the intent of this paper to discuss the method and design approach to the method. This will be done at the hand of experiences at E2 shaft..

Sishen Iron Ore Mine is situated 280 km north-west of Kimberley in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The mine produces and sells high quality iron ore of various specifications to various national and international clients. The saleable product is derived from the blending and beneficiation of different types and qualities of hematite iron ore. This paper documents the new developments which were implemented (or are in the process of being implemented) on the mine in the long-term planning, medium-term planning, grade control and material tracking in the beneficiation plant with special attention being paid to the quality of the final, saleable product. The process starts with the long-term planning where the pit shell and pit optimization is determined by Whittle 4X. New developments include the introduction of a linear programming based scheduling system to enhance the long-term schedule generated by Whittle 4X. The LP route was decided on in order to take into account all the constraining factors of the final product that could not be configured in Whittle. To complement this the XPAC Auto Scheduler scheduling package was introduced to do the medium-term mine scheduling. This 18-month rolling plan includes cost parameters to enable the planner to extract a detailed operational budget from the scheduling while ensuring that production standards are maintained and grade constraints are met. The existing grade control system was enhanced with GPS capabilities and a computer system to do material tracking. The high precision GPS system introduced on the shovels allows for the accurate control of the loading procedures at the mining face. Because of the complicated geology and grade composition of blasting blocks it is imperative to accurately differentiate between different materials in the same blasting block and being able to excavate that with the loading equipment. The GPS system on the trucks allows for accurate location monitoring of dumping in order to keep track of specific material types. The state-of-the-art material tracking system developed for Sishen will enable the grade control officer to keep track and record various parameters of the material from its in situ position in the blasting blocks, through the crusher and onto different stockpiles, in various stages of the beneficiation process and onto the blending beds, into the dispatching trains and eventually into the ships for international distribution. These developments elevate the Sishen planning and grade control systems to a new level of service excellence from which management can obtain accurate and timely information on product status. It also enables Sishen to maximize resource utilization while still complying with the tough market constraints.

Process control optimisation depends a lot on the availability of timely data from production to give operators a chance to make adjustments before potential process upsets or disruptions happen. A lot of data is already available with newer and updated machine technologies, but what about the process upsets coming from the raw materials that we use? They are natural products and therefore they are not of a stable composition or mineralogy. The production process depends on a certain chemical or mineralogical stability of the raw materials when they come to a roaster, kiln or sintering stage. Only then can the proposed reactions take place and the equipment be operated at stable temperatures. Laboratory analytical technologies have the limitation that they depend on representative samples and have a long time delay. Therefore online (real time) analysers are used nowadays in mining applications to obtain an early indication of the actual mined or to-be-processed ore. Most available technologies can only analyse inorganic content on an oxide or elemental level. Near infrared (NIR)- based online analysers can overcome that limitation and give a real time analysis of organic as well as inorganic composition, if required on a mineral level. The paper will present two case studies where the NIR online technology was successfully adapted.: a) Optimising refractory gold ore processing at the Goldstrike roaster operation b) Optimising the sinter process at a Japanese manufacturer. The economical analyses of different Chuquicamata open pit mine planning scenarios, indicate that the pit closure should occur at latest in the year of 2017. However, about 60,000 m of drill holes have demonstrated that below the pit bottom there is a potential of 2.3 billion tons of ore. Hence, Division Codelco Norte developed the scoping engineering for a large underground panel caving operation, similar to El Teniente mine. This project considers the exploitation of a 2500 m 300 m footprint, with three 250 m lifts. The plan considers to initiate the construction in the year 2009, to begin the production in the year 2015 and achieve a production rate of 45 million tons per year in the year 2021. A large-scale transition from open pit to underground mining like this one presents three main challenges: (1) to include the geotechnical aspects relevant for mine design and mine planning, (2) to define the proper surface and underground infrastructure, and (3) to fulfil the project deadlines and to achieve the production targets. This paper summarizes this transition project and discusses these three main challenges.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, Wits University, research Wits Metallurgy celebrated its centenary in 2004. The department has been at the forefront of education and research and has contributed greatly to the metals and minerals industry, both in South Africa and abroad, in terms of human resources and knowledge generation. A significant number of industry and academic leaders worldwide are Wits Metallurgy graduates. Since its early beginnings, pyrometallurgy has always been part of the curricula and research offered by the department. Pyrometallurgical activities started to expand tremendously from the middle of the 1960s, especially by the formation - together with Mintek - of the Pyrometallurgy Research Group, which continues its internationally recognised research activities today. The research efforts have been concentrated on problems associated particularly with ferroalloy, steel, stainless steel production, and PGM/Cu-Ni sulphide smelting. In recent years, research has been further expanded to physical modelling of pyrometallurgical reactors. Almost all of the specific research projects were handled from a fundamental point of view, and hence a large number of MSc(Eng) and PhD degrees were achieved by candidates under the supervision of the Pyrometallurgy Research Leaders. Moreover, a significant portion of the research results were published in internationally recognized journals and conference proceedings. Among these, Infacon and the Molten Slags, Fluxes and Salts Conference series are worth mentioning. The studies from a fundamental point of view include thermodynamics, phase equilibria, transport phenomena, kinetics, and process dynamic aspects of high temperature processes and systems, both in the solid and liquid states.

To achieve safe and healthy working conditions in shaft sinking operations, ventilation, and where necessary cooling, must be provided. These requirements are considered for sinking vertical, sub-vertical and decline shafts. Regulatory requirements, determining air volumes and amount of cooling required, the various ventilation methods used such as force, exhaust, twin columns, air reversal using four gate systems and the equipment required to achieve this, are discussed. Consideration is also given to the sinking of single and twin declines using diesel equipment, calculating the air volumes required to dilute pollutants and the various methods for achieving this. Also discussed is the importance of having early ventilation design input to the overall design of the mine. In many cases ventilation can be the prime determinant for the size and configuration of the shafts or declines that have to be sunk.

PK2 Ventilation shaft is part of Paardekraal No 2 twin shaft system that is being developed to replace depleting Merensky reef production at Paardekraal shaft complex. The sinking team at this shaft faced considerable challenge of improving the total sinking cycle in order to be able to deliver the fully equipped shaft on time and on schedule. The cladding support cycle was identified as the tedious and time consuming activity in the overall shaft sinking operation. Reduction in the time required for handling and setting up the support installation equipment, and the time required for subsequent installation of the necessary support has a direct impact on the overall cycle time, and consequently the overall productivity and efficiency of the sinking operation. This reduction in support cycle was achieved by making use of machine carousel. The objective of this paper is to describe the support methodology that was used during the ventilation shaft sinking and the use of the machine carousel to reduce the cladding support cycle. The machine carousel replaces the traditional use of machine kibble in conventional vertical shaft sinking and has been designed specifically for installation of sidewall support at the shaft bottom during the sinking process.

Worldwide, the major Manganese ores can be separated into three different types: ?Oxidized ores (MnO2): in Australia, Gabon, Brazil,?. ?Semi-oxidized ores (Mn2O3): in South-Africa, Australia,?. ?Carbonated ore (MnCO3): in Ghana, South Africa, Kazhakstan?. The other Manganese ores are less rich but can be used locally or in the neighbour countries (China, Ukraina, India?). Since the beginning of the 20th Century, Manganese has played a big role in the steel industry process average usage ratio: 9,5 kg/mt of steel). The recent grow-up of this industry has led to an increase of Manganese ores demand. In parallel, several companies have increased their Manganese ore producing capacity. In this presentation, we explain the link between the main Manganese ores characteristics and the key different factors for an effective and low cost Mn alloys production (HCFeMn and SiMn): ?Chemistry ?Size ?Reactivity Then we will point out the advantages of Comilog ore and Sintec ® usages in various Manganese alloy metallurgical process compared with the other main ores and with the local ores. Some advised formulations for the different kinds of furnaces and alloys will be also discussed.

"The chromium (Cr) content of stainless steel originates from recycled scrap and/or ferrochrome (FeCr), which is produced mainly by the carbothermic reduction of chromite ore. The oxidative sintered pellet production process is one of the most widely applied FeCr processes. The supplier of this technology specifies that recycling of chromite-containing dust collected from the pellet sintering off-gas and fines screened out from the sintered pellets (collectively referred to as pre-oxidized chromite fines) should be limited to a maximum of 4 wt% of the total pellet composition. However, the results presented in this paper suggest that recycling of such fines up to a limit of 32 wt% of the total pellet composition may improve the compressive and abrasion strengths of the cured pellet. In addition, electron microprobe and quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses demonstrate that chromite grains present in the pre-oxidized chromite fines consist, at least partially, of crystalline phases/compounds that will improve the metallurgical efficiency and specific electricity consumption (i.e. MWh/ton FeCr produced) of the smelting process. Introduction Stainless steel is a vital modern-day alloy that is well-known for its corrosion resistance, which is mainly due to the inclusion of chromium (Cr) (ICDA, 2013). Stainless steel is mostly produced from recycled scrap and ferrochrome (FeCr), a relatively crude alloy of Cr and iron (Fe). FeCr is predominantly produced by the carbothermic reduction of chromite, a mineral belonging to the spinel group characterized by the unit formula [(Mg,Fe2+)(Al,Cr,Fe3+)2O4] (Haggerty, 1991; Paktunc and Cabri, 1995; Tathavakar, Antony, and Jha, 2005). Although Cr can occur in 82 different minerals, chromite is the only source of new Cr units that can be exploited in commercial volumes (Motzer and Engineers, 2004). Approximately 95% of mined chromite is used in the production of various FeCr grades, of which high-carbon and charge grade FeCr are the most common (ICDA, 2013)."

"SynopsisThe global resources and commodities market has become highly competitive. While southern Africa’s abundance of minerals resources is still unrivalled, it has lost considerable dominance in terms of production output. The sustainability of southern Africa’s mining industry is increasingly becoming dependent on its ability to manage the performance of its operations well. A valuable tool for monitoring and managing performance is the use of key performance areas (KPAs) – which are those areas of performance that are reflected explicitly or implicitly in the vision and strategies of an organization and reflect the critical success factors of the organization. This paper is a review of key performance areas in the southern African mining delivery environment. The KPAs discussed in this paper have been identified by comparing KPAs of the several mining houses engaged in surface mining operations in southern Africa and then extracting those KPAs that are common to most of them. Although the authors support the view that each organization should develop KPAs to specifically fit its needs, the study reveals that five KPAs – safety and health, costs, product quality, fleet management, and delivery should form a default list that covers the key areas that any organization should consider when choosing KPAs. KPIs are those subsets of KPAs that we measure in order to manage KPAs.IntroductionThe global resources and commodities market has become highly competitive. Metal powder compaction offers unique advantages in the manufacture of net-shape components using techniques such as laser sintering, conventional press and sintering, metal injection moulding, direct rolling, direct forging, and hot isostatic pressing. If the output from the primary metal production process is in powder form, then considerable cost and energy savings can be realized by direct conversion to semi-finished or final shapes. This possibility exists for titanium and possibly also for Ta, Zr, Hf, and Nb metals. However, these attractive benefits are associated with some significant risks. The high surface-to-volume ratio of powder particles coupled with the reactive nature of these metals means that special care must be taken when handling them. Powder explosions are unfortunately still a regular occurrence internationally and these often result in serious injury and loss of life. Even seemingly 'safe' compounds such as sugar, flour, and grain can be extremely hazardous when handled or milled and dust clouds are produced. In addition, exposure to airborne particles can have adverse effects on the human body, especially when particles are inhaled on a regular basis. Furthermore, the medical consequences of these are not fully understood, especially in the case of nanoparticles. The impact is often not observed immediately and debilitating illnesses may emerge only years or decades later. As far as is known, there are no South African guidelines for handling of metal powders. This paper attempts to provide an awareness of the risks associated with metal powders (including those produced indirectly by other metalworking/finishing operations) as well as some guidelines for their safe handling, based on international best practices.

This is my second visit to South Africa, and I am struck by the similarities between our countries. This extends to the professional issues associated with engineering and competencies in particular. I propose to outline two exciting stories today. ? Development of competency standards for professional engineers in Australia. ? Development of a management programme which has assisted professional engineers regain positions of leadership in Australian industry and government. First of all I would like to outline the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers, Australia(APESMA).

In Southern Africa, historic mining and mineral processing of base metal deposits have almost exclusively focussed on the extraction of major metals, leading to the loss of remaining valuable raw materials into tailings dumps and waste rock piles. At the Namib Pb–Zn mine (Erongo Region, Namibia), historic base metal tailings deposits are present as unreclaimed exposed waste piles. The tailings comprise silt- (fraction A: d50 = 25 to 48 μm) to sand-sized (fraction B: d50 = 86 to 185 μm; fraction C: d50 = 210 to 230 μm) material and contain major concentrations of base metals (Pb av. 1.15 mass%, Zn av. 3.20 mass%), S (av. 9.95 mass%), as well as lower values of other metals (Cu av. 490 μg/g, Cd av. 133 μg/g, Ag av. 22 μg/g), and critical elements like Sb (av. 14.7 μg/g) and In (14.3 μg/g). Former mineral processing only targeted the extraction of galena and sphalerite. As a consequence, qualitative mineralogical composition of the tailings is similar to that of the primary ore. Ca–Fe–Mg(–Mn) carbonates, quartz, micas, chlorite, minor graphite, magnetite, and rare parisite relate to the former host rock and gangue matrix, whereas Fe-rich sphalerite, galena, magnetite, pyrite with minor pyrrhotite, rare arsenopyrite, marcasite, cassiterite, and accessory scheelite are original constituents of the primary ore. Reprocessing of such a material would be challenging, but a mixed Pb–Zn concentrate enriched in Cd and Ag might be obtained. In future, possible reprocessing of Namib tailings and associated disposal of wastes into an appropriately designed repository would not only generate valuable metal commodities, but such activities would also eliminate a major metal pollution source from the local environment.

As part of JAGUARS (JApanese-German Underground Acoustic emission Research in South Africa), high-resolution tiltmeters were installed during 2007 at Mponeng gold mine, South Africa, in an attempt to study and understand the risks posed by in-mine seismic events and to subsequently use the knowledge gained to mitigate these risks. In December 2007, an M2.2 event occurred at Mponeng and was detected by the tiltmeters installed. The tilt expected for the M2.2 event is modelled through the use of numerical and analytical tools and utilizing, as input parameters, characteristics of the event such as the rupture area, the amount of slip, elastic properties of the rock, the state of stress before the event occurred, and frictional parameters of the rupture. The calculated tilt values are correlated and compared with the recorded data, and are found to be of the same order. Certain input parameters, such as the initial rupture point, are further constrained by varying them, during modelling, until the calculated and observed tilt values are approximately equal. From modelling, it can be concluded that the rupture point had to be closer to the location of the tiltmeters. In addition, possible locations acting as source areas for the observed aftertilt are determined. Further modelling still needs to be done to quantify the effects of the tunnel close to the tiltmeters and plastic deformation of the rock mass.
