Often plant performance suffers as a result of poor control. Poor control leads to low mill throughputs, poor classification and less than satisfactory concentrate grades and overall recoveries. By using the appropriate control tools, substantial gains in plant performance can be made. Mintek?s MillStar and FloatStar controllers have been implemented at various sites across the world. The MillStar controller incorporates leading technology that controls process units from the mill feed through to the flotation feed. Typical results show that milling circuit throughput is increased by 6-10 % and the final product grind size is tightly controlled, thereby enhancing flotation performance. The FloatStar controller is aimed at stabilising and optimising flotation circuits. Through improved level control alone, recovery improvements of up to 1 % have been achieved. Furthermore, by using on-line grade analysers, the controller stabilises final concentrate grades, whilst maximising flotation recovery.

The properties and deterioration in strength of cemented tailings backfill (CTB )in the underground acidic environment under oxidizing conditions were studied. X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy of the surface of the CTB was carried out, and the sulphuric acid corrosion mechanism elucidated. The properties tested included compressive strength, elastic modulus, cohesion, internal friction angle, variation in the hydrogen ion concentration, and stress-strain relationship in different corrosion periods. The damage model of the CTB was established considering the effects of parameters such as corrosion time and strain on the damage evolution. It was found that the compressive strength, elastic modulus, cohesion (binder effect), and internal friction angle increased at first and then decreased with exposure time. In the long term, the peak stress decreased with corrosion time while the peak strain increased; elastic modulus, and deformation modulus also decreased. The damage caused by corrosion and by load were related by means of a mathematical model, which revealed the relationships between sulphuric attack, load, and damage to backfill in complex underground environments. During corrosion, the expansion of gypsum and ettringite caused microfractures in the CTB. With increasing corrosion time, micro-cracks developed and proliferated. The mechanism of corrosion damage was found to be the dissolution of hydrogen ions and a sulphate ion reaction that produces an expansive substance, resulting in deterioration of the strength of CTB.

"Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL) is classified as the leading work-related disability in the mining industry. ONIHL has a negative impact, on not only the health and occupational productivity of affected individuals, but arguably also on the country’s mining industry and economy. Hearing conservation programmes (HCPs) are an effective strategy in the management of ONIHL. However, current literature indicates that HCPs are not achieving the anticipated and desired outcomes in the South African mining sector despite the efforts focused on the management of ONIHL. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to propose the use of a feedback-based noise monitoring model as a tool for monitoring and managing ONIHL in the South Africa’s mining sector. This model is a basic static feedback model with practical applications such as estimating, monitoring. and providing quantitative information to aid miners, mining administrators, and policy-makers in decision-making around HCPs. Additionally, the model could form part of an early intervention and management strategy for ONIHL in the workplace. The strength of this model, although currently static, is that it encompasses all the pillars of HCPs and takes into account the policies concerned with the management of ONIHL in the mining sector. IntroductionHazardous noise levels (above 85 dBA) in the workplace place exposed employees at risk of developing a disabling occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL). ONIHL is the ‘partial or complete hearing loss in one or both ears as a result of one’s employment’ (Nandi and Dhatrak, 2008, p. 1). This type of hearing loss develops gradually as a result of being exposed to continuous or intermittent high levels of noise over a long period of time (McBride, 2004; Patel et al., 2010; Rappaport and Provencal, 2001). A hearing threshold below 40 dBs is classified as a disabling hearing loss (Yadav et al., 2015), resulting in a hidden condition that does not readily manifest itself (Tye-Murray, 2009, p. 3). Dugan (2003) describes disabling hearing loss as the ‘most prevalent, least recognized and least understood physical disability’, while Copley and Frederichs (2010) and Hermanus (2007) argue that permanent disabling hearing loss is a major contributor to the global burden of disease on individuals, families, communities, and countries."

Publications on hard rock tunnel support design in the South African mining industry have originated primarily from the goldmines during the past 50 years. Little has been published to date on the platinum and chrome mines of the Bushveld Complex. This paper covers the search for a suitable design methodology for off-reef tunnels at Impala Platinum Mine, situated on the Western Lobe of the Bushveld Complex. The fall of ground accident statistics for off-reef excavations of the mine are presented and the available rock mass quality evaluation systems are reviewed. The Q-Tunnelling Quality Index (or Q-Index) is selected because it assesses the important driving factors behind falls of ground at Impala. Two off-reef excavations are evaluated using the Q-Index, and it is shown that minor modifications are required for implementation at Impala. It will take some time before support design throughout the mine is based on the outcome of proper geotechnical investigations based on the Q-Index. Widespread implementation of such support designs should help to solve the fall of ground problem in off-reef excavations while at the same time reducing support costs.

Experimental and thermodynamic modelling studies on the structure of alkali borate melts and properties are discussed. A thermodynamic structure model for alkali borate melts is developed to describe the distribution of structural groups in the alkali borate melts as a function of composition. A qualitative interpretation for the boron anomaly in viscosity has been proposed, which regards the boron anomaly as a manifestation of the various antithetical effects caused by the introduction of alkali oxide into boric oxide. It has been found that the viscosity of alkali borate melts increases or decreases according to the changes in rigidity and spatial connectivity of the glass network structure, which is the function of temperature and composition. These concepts with some key examples are discussed in relation to their usefulness and practicality in industrial slags. A leaching model for gold ore that takes into account the impact of cyanide and oxygen concentrations as well as gold surface exposure on leaching performance is developed. Cyanide consumption is estimated by an empirical model that is a function of ore particles size distribution as well as cyanide, copper and sulphur concentrations. For example: ?I?d forgotten that the Chinese invented black powder at least 1 000 years ago, back in the 10th century (although some say this invention occurred 2 000years ago). ?I didn?t know that Roger Bacon was the first person in the Western World to give exact directions for the making of gunpowder in 1242 and to understand its potential. Pepper?s Playbook of Metals quotes:?...above all, he is named as the discoverer of gun-powder, a material which has brought more wonderful changes in the great family of man than the most potent elixir that could have been devised to prolong life?.

The earliest authenticated scientific report of the occurrence of platinum in rocks from the Bushveld Complex appears to be by William Bettel on 10th November 1906. Thereafter, prospecting of the chromite-rich rocks for platinum proved frustrating. I suggest that the resurgence of interest shown by Dr Hans Merensky in 1924 resulted from his realization that newly-panned platinum had a different grain size from that in the chromite layers and indicated a different source rock, which he located and it became known as the Merensky Reef.

It is common practice for underground mine plans to be created sequentially, where results from one planning process form the input data for another. While this is practical for manual methods, computerized optimization techniques should consider an integrated approach to creating the global mine plan. This is because optimizing an individual mine planning process, such as stope layouts, introduces a likelihood of increasing costs or decreasing revenues associated with other areas, such as production scheduling, as harmful decisions must be balanced. Considering the interaction and influence that individual underground mine planning processes have on each other during optimization will provide more profitable results than if these are ignored. Optimization techniques for stope layouts and production scheduling are reviewed. An integer programming model is proposed that allows for either integrated or isolated optimization. Both approaches are separately applied to a block model. The results demonstrate the model?s ability to produce optimal long-term sublevel stoping mine plans and the benefits of using an integrated approach. A test has been devised that can predict accurately the % crystallinity developed in a slag film formed between the steel strand and the mould. The % crystallinity in the test samples was determined and compared with that for slag films formed in the mould when casting with that flux. There was good agreement between the % crystallinity in the test samples and the slag films. It was found that additions of TiO2and ZrO2had little effect on the amount of crystalline phase formed, but additions of CaO caused a dramatic increase in the amount of crystalline phase formed. Various parameters (which can be calculated from chemical composition of the flux) have been plotted against % crystallinty in the test samples. It was found that the modified (NBO/T) ratio provided the best relation with % crystallinity for the various parameters tested. There commended relation is % crystallinity=141.1(NBO/T)-284.0. The separating performance of a pilot dry beneficiation system using a gas-solid fluidized bed was investigated with coal from South Africa. The coal used for the study has a low inherent moisture content, a moderate ash content, a moderate volatile content, a low sulphur content and a high calorific value. Its washability is moderate. Experimental results show that the separating quality of the fluidized bed drops gradually as the feed-coal particle size decreases. The probable error, E, values for 50?25mm, 25?13 mm and 13?6 mm coals were 0.04 g/cm3, 0.06 g/cm3 and 0.09 g/cm3, respectively. The cause of the differences in separating characteristics was analysed by particle dynamics and numerical modelling. Furthermore, the pilot fluidized bed was employed to separate 50-6mm coal. In this experiment the coal ash content was reduced from 23.74% to 11.79%, with a probable error, E, value of 0.07 g/cm3and a recovery efficiency of 98.26%. This indicates that the fluidized bed is applicable to the separation of coal from South Africa and has good separating performance and wide applicability. An overview is given of the matte melting process used for the beneficiation of South African Platinum Group Metal (PGM) ores. Most producers use six-electrode furnaces to melt the concentrate and Pierce Smith converters to oxidize excess iron sulphide from the furnace matte. Concentrates from two reef-types (the so-called Merensky and UG-2 reefs) dominate the feedstock supply. Concentrate from the Merensky reef is low in chromium and do not pose significant melting problems. Concentrates from the UG-2 reef contain much higher levels of chromium, which results in the formation of chromium-rich spinels during melting. This is attributed to the low solubility of chromium in furnace slag under typical operating conditions (an oxygen partial pressure of 10-8-10-9bar at temperatures of 1550°C to 1600°C). During the converting process care is needed to avoid excessively oxidizing conditions, which result in cobalt, nickel and copper losses to the slag. High nickel losses result in the formation ofFe2NiO4(trevorite), which often forms solid solutions with FeCr2O4and Fe3O4. In future, the main challenge in the processing of South African PGM ores will be to cope with ever increasing levels of chromium in the concentrate. A short-term solution to the problem would be to melt the concentrate under slightly reducing conditions to promote the formation of CrO, which is more soluble in the slag than Cr2O3. A longer-term solution to the problem would be to abandon the current matte-smelting process in favour of an alloy-based process, which would offer total flexibility with respect to the amount of chromium that can be tolerated in the feed. The final removal of inclusions in the ladle, tundish, and mold in a continuous casting process involves the kinetic steps of liquid film drainage, interface rupture, and absorption of the inclusion into the overlaying molten slag. During this process, oxide inclusions can undergo chemical reactions with the slag. This paper presents recent results on imaging the slag/steel interface and elucidates the evolution of Al2O3and Al2O3-CaO inclusions during their separation from the steel and on their incorporation into the slag. Experimental results, obtained through a Confocal Scanning Laser Microscope, are compared with thermodynamic predictions.

Knowing the origin of the relevant and irrelevant components of the nugget effect is essential to optimize the process under study. This paper describes the causes of the nugget effect and, its dependency on the sample support, sampling density, and on the QA/QC procedures. Several examples of natural and ?human? nugget effect are given. A method to estimate the magnitude of the relevant and irrelevant components is suggested. Finally, the economic consequences of misunderstanding the nugget effect are analysed.

In this research, a model quarry with an annual production capacity of 1 000 000 tonnes has been studied for both pit and hillside quarry cases with constant overall slope angle and variable bench slope angle, considering road grades of 8 per cent and 10 per cent. First, technical requirements have been determined and then the effect of production parameters, such as hole diameter, type of quarrying (pit or hillside) and road grade, on the cost has been investigated to determine bench height. Based on the results, it has been concluded that hole diameter has to be kept large in both pit and hillside quarrying to reduce drilling unit costs. In addition, in order to take advantage of gravity and reduce transportation cost, it has been suggested that bench height and road grade have to be kept high and low respectively in the case of hillside quarrying (downhill transportation) while, in the case of pit quarrying (uphill transportation), bench height and road grade have to be kept low and high respectively, in order to transport the blasted material to a lower height and distance, to save energy, thus decreasing the transport cost. The position of Australia as a continuing long-term supplier of mineral sands, and their upgraded products, has been reinforced with the discovery of the extensive mineral reserves in the Murray Basin, an area covering parts of South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. A major impurity in the Murray Basin is chromium, mainly present in ilmenite concentrates as individual chrome spinel grains. Magnetizing roast treatments are being evaluated as a means of removing the chrome spinel impurity from the ilmenite and as a result of the roast and magnetic separation treatments, the chrome spinels can be expected to be concentrated in the non-magnetic reject fractions. It is from these fractions that attempts were made in this study to recover a chromium-rich product by magnetic fractionation and by application of flotation. The high gauss non-magnetic rejects from the roasting of a primary and a secondary ilmenite fraction were magnetically fractionated to obtain a product with 40.5 and 28.7 per cent Cr2O3,respectively. From the high gauss non-magnetic reject from the roasting of a primary ilmenite, flotation produced a chromium-rich product assaying 29.5 wt per cent Cr2O3at 69.0 per cent recovery. In another test a magnetic fraction assaying 32.9 wt per cent Cr2O3was floated to yield a chromium-rich product with 39.7 wt per cent Cr2O3at 96.4 per cent recovery. X-ray diffraction patterns of all the products indicated that the spinel concentrated was a ferroan magnesiochromite with rutile, ilmenite and hematite as impurities. Since all products were from a single pass, further processing can be expected to remove the impurity minerals and yield higher grade products. The material produced from the Murray Basin ilmenites in this study had similar compositions to commercial chromite ores, except for titania levels that were much higher. The high titania levels were due to residual rutile in the products, but it is expected that this can be removed with further processing. The mineral sand deposits in the Murray Basin are scattered over a wide area and the amount of chromite that may be produced from each of these deposits is unlikely to be sufficient to support an export market. Consequently, any chromite produced in the Murray Basin will most likely need to be processed locally to value added products for a niche market such as chemicals production. The essence of the method consists in creation of drop of opposite sign at the isolating stoppings, by which air losses through the accident district change direction of their motion. The period of reversal is selected in that way so that air may not find itself in the zone of burning. The method of fighting the fire considered was repeatedly used in the coal mines of the Ukraine. The theoretical basis of efficiency and two examples of use of this method by fighting the underground fires are adduced in the paper.

In rock cutting mechanics, the effects of the rock and coal brittleness on the efficiency of cutting bits are examined by many researchers. There is no universally accepted brittleness concept as a measure of cutting efficiency. The effect of the brittleness on rock cutting has not been completely explained. The aim of this study is to correlate the relationships between Specific Energy (SE) and brittleness concepts. The applicability of various brittleness measurement methods for rock cutting efficiency has been investigated. In this study, the raw data derived from previous experimental studies were used, and the relationships between SE and brittleness concepts were investigated. The two previously used brittleness concepts, which are named as B1 (the ratio of compressive strength to tensile strength) and B2 (the ratio of compressive strength minus tensile strength to compressive strength plus tensile strength), and a new introduced brittleness concept named B3 (the area under line in relation to compressive strength and tensile strength) were evaluated in this study. The relations among these brittleness concepts for rock cutting efficiency were established using regression analysis. There is no correlation found between the SE values and the brittleness of B1and B2values. But, the SE is strongly correlated with the brittleness of B3. It was seen that the suggested brittleness of B3concept could be used as an indicator in rock cutting efficiency analysis.

Between 2000 and 2006, platinum production from the South African mines expanded from 206 to 307 tonnes (DME, 2007). Most of this additional metal has come from traditional ?narrow? reef stoping, generally taken to mean stoping in working places with a mining height of less than 1,5 metres. It is well known that narrow-reef stoping presents safety, technological and ergonometric challenges (Pickering, 2007). In planning for the expansion, which is still continuing, the platinum mining industry realized that it could not simply continue with traditional methods of narrow-reef mining. Particular issues identified were: ? High labour-intensivity: caused by use of hand-held rock drilling machines, labour-intensive support installation and stope cleaning; ? Dependence on rock-drillers: this occupation is no longer an attractive one and there is a reducing flow of new recruits; ? Safety: most of the work is performed close to the new faces, where there is the greatest exposure to the hazards of falling rock.
