A method and equipment have been developed Tor measuring the impact strength of grains of brittle materials. It is shown that brittle materials develop a characteristic particle size distribution when fractured by impact. A simple mathematical model has been found to describe this distribution, and one of the parameters of the model has been designated the r value. The r value is directly proportional .to impact energy and, for fixed impact energy, it becomes a useful criterion of grain strength. Data are presented on the variation of the r value as a function of sample history, initial size, energy input and number of impacts, The results are interpreted in terms of the flaw theory of brittle fracture.

This paper introduces a computer simulation that extends the use of microcomputer systems for mine ventilation planning. The program was developed as part of an ongoing study to produce a simulation model that would determine the optimum duties of a main fan and a booster fan without requiring the trial-and-error runs that are necessary with currently available programs. To use the new program, the user specifies the location of one main fan and one booster fan, and the minimum required airflows in any number of working places. The computer determines the fan duties that will maintain the required airflows at the lowest operating costs without causing undesired recirculation. The methodology of the program and an example showing how it can be applied are presented.

INTRODUCTION In exploration for rock tunnels, the geology should not only be described, but its effect on excavation and support assessed. It is not an easy task to correlate exploration results with support and excavation requirements, even when the exploration program is detailed and geologic conditions are relatively well known. Many of the significant geologic features are subtle and their effect is difficult to interpret from exploration results. However, in similar geologic settings, there are specific geologic features which will cause recurring support problems. Such features should be actively sought out when exploring in a given geologic setting. In blocky and seamy rock, the primary features controlling performance are the joints, shears, and shear zones. This paper describes the effect of such features on the formation and movement of rock wedges in tunnels driven in foliated metamorphic rocks in Washington, D. C. and New York City. In both areas the foliation commonly forms a N-S striking plane of weakness along which major shear zones, shears, and joints have formed. In addition, the structural history of the two areas has been similar, so that there are similarities in the orientation and character of the other major joint sets and shear zones in the rock mass. The observations were made in tunnels ranging from 10 to 70 ft in width and excavated at depths ranging from 80 to 800 ft. Most of the tunnels described were deep enough to be located in unweathered rock, or in rock only slightly weathered along joints and shears. It is a pleasure to have the opportunity of being here today to discuss the application of horizontal filters in the metallurgical industries. The use of horizontal type filters has been limited in metallurgical plants. However, in the recent past there have been new designs of this type equipment which greatly broaden their field of application. Through their use in many applications, important economies can be achieved over more conventional methods. The first of the modern continuous horizontal filters was initially developed by Oliver United Filters as their scroll type horizontal filter. This was an outgrowth of the old Oliver Sand Table that was limited to very coarse, free filtering pulps containing no appreciable amount of fine particles. The sand table was rather limited in application. The later continuous scroll type horizontal filter provided for a reverse air blow after discharge which reslurried the heel remaining and permitted the filtration of pulps containing finer particles. In the manufacture of phosphoric acid by the ?wet? process, the filtration of gypsum from the strong acid presented an extremely difficult filtration problem due to blinding of the filter media caused by crystallization of the soluble salts contained in the acid. A filter which allowed for continuous cloth washing was required, and this led to the development of the continuous pan type, and travelling belt type horizontal filters which provided for this need. Among the filters developed were the Prayon by Engineering and Industrial Corporation of Luxembomg for use in their phosphoric acid plants. They are one of the largest manufacturers of phosphoric acid in Europe. The Dorr-Oliver Traveling Pan Filter was also developed by Mario Giorgini, Manager of Dorr-Oliver?s Italian subsidiary, for use with the Dorr Company?s phosphoric acid process. Basically, there are four existing types of horizontal filters in commercial use at this time: The scroll discharge non-pan type, the continuous belt type (Lurgi), rotary pan type, and the traveling belt type. The construction and principle of operation of these various filters will be discussed.

Forecasts indicate that the acid rain bill currently before Congress is likely to cause an increase in demand of 30 to 40 million tons per year of compliance quality coal from Central Appalachia. This represents a doubling of this segment of the coal business. This paper will examine how this doubling can be met, what the likely implications for pricing are, the major uncertainties associated with these predictions, and the likely outcomes of the growth in compliance coal. Finally, some implications for fuel planners will be discussed.

The Rio Tinto-Zinc Corporation Limited (RTZ), through it exploration company Riofinex, commenced exploration for bauxite in the Amazonia region of Brazil during 1970. Following' encouraging indications, exploration licences were taken out and an exploration programme was initiated In February 1975, a preliminary 'feasibility report indicated that a project, based on the Miltonia plateau located close to the town of Paragominas in the State of Para, was viable and that barging might offer an economic solution to getting the product to an ocean-going port. A, decision was taken in April 1975 to proceed with a full feasibility study. In the latter stages of the study, an engineering consortium of Mendes Junior and Bechtel do Brasil was employed to review, and modify if necessary, the concepts that RTZ had developed for the project's operation. With these concepts agreed, the consortium was requested to make capital and operating cost estimates, and these became available during February 1978. The deposit is being developed by a Brazilian company Mineracao Vera Cruz S.A. (MVC) in which the present share-holding is owned 64 percent by RTZ and 36 percent by Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD). RTZ is a British based international group of mining and industrial companies with interests in almost every major metal and fuel. CVRD is a Brazilian mining company, 85 percent owned by the Brazilian Government, with a major interest in iron ore and also other non-ferrous metals. It is intended, in due course, that the company will become majority owned by Brazilian interests.

Previous research developed guide- lines to restrict the placement of air velocity sensors to areas of Low turbulence in underground nines. Even though these guidelines are theoretically correct, and may be easy to follow in underground coal mines, their application in small underground metal mines is difficult. As a result, study was undertaken at the Colorado School of Mines Experimental Mine to determine if an air velocity sensor could be placed in other locations with acceptable results. It was found chat by applying a variable calibration function to correct for changes in amounts of turbulence, instead of the previously used calibration factor multiplication, the sensor could be used successfully in areas of moderate turbulence.

Literature is rather abundant on the topic of steady-state network analysis programs. Many versions exist, some of them have real extended facilities such as full graphical manipulation, fire simulation in motion, etc. These programs are certainly of great help to any ventilation planning and often assist the ventilation engineer in his operational decision making. However, what ever the efficiency of the calculation algorithms might be, their weak point still is the overall validity of the model. This numerical model, apart from maybe the questionable application of some physical laws, depends directly on the quality of the data used to identify its most influencing parameters such as the passive (resistance) or active (fan) characteristic of each of the branches in the network. Considering the non-linear character of the problem and the great number of variables involved, finding the closest numerical model of a real mine ventilation network is without any doubt a very difficult problem. This problem, often referred to as the parameter adjustment problem, is in almost every practical case solved on an experimental and "feeling" basis. Only a few papers put forward a mathematical solution based on a least square approach as the best fit criterion. The aim of this paper is to examine the possibility to apply the well-known simplex method to this problem. The performance of this method and its capability to reach the global optimum which corresponds to the best fit is discussed and compared to that of other methods.

Slurry technology developed for the marine transport of mineral commodities has been increasingly applied to on-shore slurry transport systems. Reclaim of mineral concentrates, sand tailings for mine backfill and various industrial minerals from storage tanks or ponds normally require a slurry of high density at constant flow rates to improve process performance and to reduce handling costs. An efficient system must accomplish this at minimum capital costs with maximum reliability. Continuing improvements in equipment design to improve repulping efficiency and their application are discussed.

A current trend in blasting of large volumes of rock is to use increasingly larger diameter shot holes. The use of large diameter holes meant; correspondingly large explosive charges will be loaded and detonated, and, if special efforts are not made, will result in more damage and vibration beyond the intended blast area. With the rising awareness of environmental factors, vibration control becomes increasingly important. Equally important is the preservation of intended lines and grades, and in some cases by blasting with care, slopes can be safely steepended. In the past, vibration control was established to prevent damage to man-made structures. The quarry or open pit itself can be regarded as a structure composed of rock. Far too little attention has been given to the effects of blasting on rock walls. The primary purpose of blasting is to break rock. If the integrity of the rock has been destroyed beyond intended lines and grades, the excavation will be more costly than originally anticipated. The increased cost will not only be from in¬creased excavation due to overbreak, but also increased maintenance due to blast induced wall instabilities

Sulphur dioxide is a versatile gas which has many uses throughout Pulp & Paper, Chemical, specialty Chemical, Mining and other industries. During recent years, S0 2 consumption and distribution patterns have resulted in renewed interests for liquid S0 2 and on site gaseous S02 manufacturing facilities. one relatively new use for S0 2 in the Mining Industry is its use for cyanide detoxification. The quest for U.S. energy independence will result in a major increase in underground mining operations. It will necessitate the rapid excavation of development drifts, entries and slopes to exploit underground deposits of energy resources such as coal, uranium and oil shale. Most of this development work will be done in soft and medium hard rock up to an unconfined compressive strength of approximately 20, 000 psi. OBSTACLES TO RAPID TUNNEL EXCAVATION Labor In the U. S. coal mining industry, the underground productivity in tons per man-day declined from 15. 61 in 1969 to 11. 00 in 1973 which is a startling 30% decline. While productivity declines, the cost of labor and supplies continues to rise. Ralph E. Bailey of Consolidation Coal Company recently stated four reasons for the decline of productivity: A shortage of experienced miners, enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act effective April 1970, major changes in union work rules in 1968, and a deterioration in the attitude of the work force (1). Because there is already a great shortage of skilled miners, the situation will get worse when large new mines for oil shale, coal and uranium open in sparsely populated areas in the Western United States. Only the large scale use of easy to operate tunneling machines can increase productivity and lower the cost of excavation.

Puerto Rico lies within the remnants of a deformed Cretaceous island arc system in the northeastern Caribbean. The Island can be divided into three broad geologic provinces: the Central Volcanic-Plutonic Province (Lower Cretaceous to middle Eocene), and the Northern and Southern Limestone Provinces (early Oligocene to middle Miocene). Known precious metal deposits are generally small and occur in veins and shear zones within Lower and Upper Cretaceous volcanic and plutonic rocks. Some Tertiary igneous rocks are also mineralized. Selected indications of disseminated lithology-controlled mineralization could represent larger deposits. Associated metals in some deposits include copper, zinc, and lead. At present, tax policies, population density, political outlook, and lack of proven significant precious metal deposits discourage the establishment of a metal mining industry.

One of the major problems with deep Polish hard coal mines are deformations of close-to-wall galleries since they are necessary and must he kept open for emergency situations and are largely responsible for work disturbances. In order to ensure safe and effective working operations, it is necessary to often rebuild galleries which, apart from the inevitable stoppage of operations, is greatly disadvantageous for the operation of a mine. The largest problems with maintaining the galleries open occur in Lower Silesian Coal Field mines where sometimes it is necessary to reconstruct the galleries several times [(Fig. 1)]. In light of what has been said above, the aim of this article is to present the reader with methods and ways of determining deformations occurring in close-to-wall galleries. Squeezing or convergence of headings is only a portion of the entire process of ground movement caused by ground disturbance due to workings. The term "squeezing of headings" is to be understood as a shortening of the distance between a point set on the roof of a heading and the corresponding one on the floor. It is very important to know the rules governing the process of squeezing in a particular mining system since it affords possibilities to define changes of the process and its parameters at any moment for a given system. This is of utmost importance because convergence of a heading is one of the most significant manifestations of ground pressure which has already been proved by studies performed by Everling (1). On the basis of those studies it has been observed that there exists an almost linear relation between the rate of convergence and loading [(Fig. 2)]. This, in turn, means that the deformations of the already exploited portion of heading are proportional to the pressure changes.

The modern coal mining industry is subject to a vast array of regulations affecting virtually all aspects of its operations. Probably the most significant over-sight role involves the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSH) established by the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, or SHCRA.1 Although complying and coping with SHCRA can be difficult for coal operators, this complex regulatory process has helped insulate the industry from ongoing efforts to extend regulation under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, or RCRA, 2 to aspects of the mining industry in general. The Environ-mental Protection Agency (EPA) has struggled with regulation of mining wastes under RCRA since the mid-1970's, but RCRA itself places most coal mining wastes firmly under the control of OSH and SHCRA. Despite the general exemption from RCRA regulation for waste materials that result from extraction and processing of coal itself, there may be circumstances under which coal mining operators could find themselves subject to regulation under RCRA or a number of other statutes administered by EPA. This paper will review briefly the history of mine waste regulation under RCRA, as well as touch on the policy decisions that led to the exemptions from RCRA regulation. The paper will summarize coal waste requirements under SHCRA, and also will review what operations at coal mines need to be controlled, in order to avoid potential liability under RCRA. In addition, it will mention requirements under other federal laws, including CERCLA, or the "Superfund" law,3 and describe how they may impose restrictions or liability on coal operations for waste or other materials commonly found at surface and underground coal mines.

Electronic detonators have been in commercial use for a decade, with an excellent safety record. This paper lists known incidents involving electronic detonators. Typical standards required by regulatory bodies for static electricity and electromagnetic fields are reviewed. The performance of some detonators is compared to these standards; in general the minimum standards are easily exceeded. The general resistance of electronic detonators to extraneous electrical energy that can be derived from the body of test results is compared to danger levels for exposure of humans to these energies; it is shown that electronic detonators can safely tolerate higher electrical energies than people can. This comparison includes comparable data for electric detonators, which are shown to be more vulnerable to extraneous electrical energy than people are. Electronic detonators also bring significant safety benefits in blasting due to their testability, two-way communications, reliability, programmability and precision. The links between these attributes and enhanced safety are discussed with examples from actual blasting. Although electronic detonators are usually more vulnerable to extraneous electricity than non-electric initiation systems, the paper shows that the net safety benefit in handling and blasting is in favor of electronic detonators, which are the safest initiation system that has ever been offered to the mining industry.

A new technique, prompt neutron activation probe (PNAP), for analyzing phosphate rock slurry in-situ was evaluated both in the laboratory and at the plant. The technique yielded a high precision in the analysis of Ca, Si and H using 252Cf source. Low accuracy of the direct measurement of P using 241Am/Be in the laboratory tests was attributed to the interference of rare earth elements present in the samples, particularly Gadolinium. No significant effect of variables such as solids loading, particle size distribution, and flotation reagents was observed on the probe performance. The probe can detect the compositional changes of the feed, tailings and the concentrate streams in the plant.

An effective elution technique has been developed for recovering uranium from ion exchange resins loaded in the carbonate leaching process. The procedure employs direct elution with acid. In comparison with conventional base elution, the procedure yields eluate of higher uranium concentration, results in a more complete elution, keeps the performance of the ion exchange resin at the fresh stage, reduces acid consumption, eliminates carbonate consumption and reduces waste for disposal. The technique has been successfully demonstrated in the field and patented. It lends itself to commercialization.

A large-scale work scheduling algorithm has been developed in the Mine Management Support System (MMSS) for assigning workers to prioritized jobs on a shift basis. This study basically concerned the formulation of a reliable mathematical programming model to handle the problem, the achievement of an efficient solution of the model, and the implementation of the algorithm to the worker assignment problems of a large underground coal mine. The results showed that the work scheduling algorithm can make optimal assignments efficiently. It is believed it has potential significance in improving manpower utilization and can offer great help to coal mine managers in making efficient manpower allocations.
