Separation of rare earth, especially Nd and Sm, was investigated by batch and column methods with a solvent impregnated resin. The solvent impregnated resin was prepared by impregnation of organo- phosphorous extractant whose trade name was PC-88A into a macro porous resin. The adsorption behavior of rare earth with a solvent impregnated resin in a batch method is the same as that with solvent extraction. In a column method to separate Nd and Sm, the effective separation in both adsorption and elution processes can be attained by setting suitable conditions, such as bed height, flow rate and concentration of eluent. Neodymium which is a lighter rare earth is separated from Sm an adsorption step, while Sm in which is a heavier rare earth is recovered in an elution step. From the integration of breakthrough and elution curves, yield of Nd and Sm is calculated in the condition of 100% purity. It was found from the results of life test of the resin that the solvent impregnated resin can be repeatedly utilized at least 20 times.

Geomembrane systems and associated geosynthetics such as geotextiles, geonets, geogrids and geocomposites have been used in precious metal heap leach and tailings facilities for many years. Geomembranes have been used in the heap leach process in pad design and solution recovery ponds as well as associated collection channels as the primary liquid barrier to contain and collect metal bearing leach solution. Geomembrane systems offer an effective, low cost alternative to other containment methods such as compacted low permeability soils, asphalt or concrete. In the 19BO's, rigid High Density Polyethylene (HOPE) liners were used to a great extent with a gradual transition to the use of the more flexible Very Low Density Polyethylene (VLDPE) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). These three geomembrane systems have been used successfully in precious metal heap leach solution containment. Predominant material thicknesses have been 30 and 40 mil for PVC, 40 and 60 mil for HOPE and VLDPE. Variants in recent years have included roughened HDPE and VLDPE to provide higher surface friction characteristics, as well as newer polymer materials such as polypropylene. In addition to providing an economical method for providing enhanced solution recovery, geomernbranes are also providing the primary liquid barrier for prevention of groundwater contamination. Because heap leach solution chemical components and dissolved metal constituents are classified as toxic substances, they are subject to environmental regulation. Many regulatory agencies are still developing guidelines for heap leach pad design, however a geomernbrane liner system is often used as a single liner or in conjunction with other materials to form composite double or even triple lined systems. "Other" materials can include alternate layers of drainage aggregate, geotextiles, clay layers and other geomembrane or geocomposite layers.

The bacterial oxidation (BIOX®) process for pre-treatment of refractory ores for gold recovery is marketed by BIOMIN Technologies S.A. The process was originally developed by GENMIN who are still providing testwork, design and commissioning assistance to BIOMIN. This process offers an alternative to the more conventional roasting or pressure oxidation techniques with the following advantages: • Greatly reduced capital costs for small to medium size plants. • A relatively flexible and easily controllable process requiring relatively unskilled labour for operation. • Improved gold recovery. • A process that is environmentally friendly. The principal disadvantage of bacterial oxidation is the relatively slow kinetics compared to pressure oxidation and roasting, a plant residence time of 4 to 5 days typically being required to obtain complete liberation of gold from refractory sulphide minerals. Bacterial activity is also slow to recover from disruptions such as air supply failure or contamination by toxic species such as cyanide. Optimum plant performance depends on judicious management and sound training of operators.

Despite what may be overwhelming evidence that natural degradation of cyanide and cyanide attenuation in hydrogeochemical processes are capable of reducing or eliminating potential water quality problems associated with heap leach facilities, the recent sharp increase in the price of gold and wide interest in the cyanidation process has focused all regulatory eyes on cyanide leaching. Regulations continue to increase, design criteria are more strict, and detoxification requirements approach or exceed the level of detectability. Current governmental regulation of mining and milling operations using cyanide varies considerably from state to state. The lack of regulatory consistency at this level is largely attributable to the current Bevill Amendment exclusion of mine wastes as potentially hazardous wastes, the undefined status of the Environmental Protection Agency's ongoing mine wast study effort, and the mining industry's reluctance to develop a consistent policy regarding state versus federal mine waste regulation.

The need for a product dewatering step between the milling/classification and leach/carbon stages of gold plants has traditionally been performed by thickeners. Whether these be the 'conventional' or 'high-rate' types both require considerable initial capital outlay even without provision for standby facilities. In addition, their sensitivity (both mechanically and metallurgically) to changing feed conditions often results in these being considered 'high-risk' items of equipment, requiring a high degree of attention from operating personnel.

Consequent on the development of digital computers the importance of analog simulation as a means of studying engineering problems has diminished in recent years. The general-purpose nature of a digital computer ensures its applicability to a wide range of tasks whereas an analog simulator is confined to the one specific use for which it was designed. Nevertheless the analog technique remains attractive in its application to certain aspects of the study of mine ventilation networks, for reasons which will now be developed.

The feasibility of recovering cyanide and copper from a gold mill barren solution was evaluated in a small A VR pilot plant. The campaign lasted 64 hours, during which time about 4,000 L of gold mill barren solution were processed. The results showed that A VR is an effective technology for recovering cyanide and copper from barren solutions. Under the best conditions, the copper precipitation and the cyanide volatilization attained 94% and 98%, respectively. Using 5 MNaOH as the absorbent, practically all the HCN gas was recovered in the form of a concentrated NaCN solution containing 70 g/L free CN. Basic engineering design parameters applicable to a large-scale operation were obtained, including the Henry's Law constant and the mass transfer coefficient for HCN gas.

If the emission of methane into any particular area of an underground coal mine remains constant, then the calculation of ventilation requirements is relatively simple. This is also true if the ventilation system is recirculatory. However, the emission of methane into a working area can vary considerably. There is always a risk that the ventilation will not be able to dilute the emission of methane to acceptable levels, because there are often short-lived peaks of emission which are very large. The ventilation design must therefore consider what is an acceptable level of risks and calculate the airflow requirements to meet this level. The acceptable level of risk can be calculated by examining the historical variation in methane emission into the area to be ventilated. For example, consider that an acceptable level occurs when methane emission peaks only exceed the capability of the ventilation one day in twenty. Then, from the history of methane emission, it is possible to calculate the necessary ventilation requirements. This method has been used since the early 1980s for conventionally ventilated districts. This paper examines the application of this technique to districts ventilated by recirculatory ventilation.

Most wastewater clean-up processes suffer from a fundamental lack of specificity in that a Reverse Osmosis process removes all dissolved solids, an Electrodialysis Reversal process removes all ions, wanted or unwanted, etc. Most techniques require the use of a membrane or contact surfaces that are prone to foul-up and are ineffective in situations where solids may be present. A photochemical process for the metallurgical industry on the other hand has the ability to operate specifically on targets that can range from one selected ion to an entire group of homologous species such as all biologically active species. Processes can be designed to change the oxidation states of a target altering the environmental impact. Several processes are currently in operation ranging from Cyanide removal to disposal of radiation wastes. This paper describes applicable photochemical processes with the help of certain key model examples.

Ion flotation is a process in which ions of interest are complexed with a suitable surfactant molecule. A dilute solution containing these complexes is then aerated, under which circumstance the surface-active complex concentrates at the air-water interface and is transferred to a froth. The present work describes some of the phenomenology of this process and experimental work leading up to the design and use of a pilot scale laboratory facility. Early experiments suggest that selective recovery of gold can be obtained in a manner at least equivalent to conventional CIP processing at low capital cost. Under favourable conditions, upgrade ratios of gold ions of the order of 180: l have been achieved from reclaimed residue dam water with as low an initial gold level as 0.2ppm. Successful development of countercurrent ion flotation for concentrating solids-free gold solutions may offer a lower cost alternative to existing gold ore processing technologies, or in more secondary applications such as concentrating dilute gold solutions or heap leach runoff. The technology may also have more generalised applications to other heavy metal processing.

More and more underground mining is being conducted using the long wall method. Likewise, many new surface mines use area or mountaintop removal methods. These methods can have a significant impact on surface and ground water resources. The overall study of the effects on surface and ground water from mining is referred to as the probable hydrologic consequences (PHC) determination of mining and reclamation. Collection and interpretation of information concerning ground water and surface water quality and quantity, as well as detailed geologic analysis, is required to adequately define the impacts of mining. This paper discusses the present day requirements and methodology of preparing a PHC for a large mining operation in the eastern coalfields.

Federally owned mineral deposits generally fall into one of three categories: (1) minerals locatable under the General Mining Law of 1872; (2) minerals leasable under the Mineral Leasing kt of 1920; and (3) minerals salable under the Materials Act of 1947. Unlike valuable deposits of gold, silver, copper, iron, lead, etc., which may be locatable, industrial minerals are acquired through a variety of methods depending on use, composition, and date of acquisition. Table 1 may be used to establish the method of acquisition for most industrial minerals.

Impurity metals can markedly influence the anodic dissolution of gold in the presence of cyanide. Several important findings related to the influence of lead are reviewed and some new observations presented. Based on the effect of pH, the scan direction, and voltage, it may be shown there are three separate voltage regimes where lead influences the anodic dissolution of gold. These are related to Pb°/ HPbO2, Au-Pb /HPbO2, and HPbO2/PbC2; oxidation-reduction reactions which provide low resistance paths for electron exchange. The gold dissolution rate was determined by direct solution analysis and is compared to the rate implied by electrochemical measurements.

In the past 30 years, there have been tremendous advancements in the uses and applications of column flotation. From their first use as final cleaners that could produce excellent grades at the cost of recoveries, columns are now being used in every stage of the flotation circuit as well as is SX-EW. Columns as roughers, final scavengers and even at the end of CIL circuits, are finding their way into the marketplace. Operational results of these new uses are presented. INTRODUCTION Flotation columns have been in use since the early 1950's in the U.S. (Hollingsworth, 1952) and the early 1960's in Canada (Trembley, Boutin, Wheeler, 1963). Application of column flotation has been somewhat diverse. In the early years, columns were used predominately for molybdenum cleaning in Canada and for phosphate flotation in the United States. Unfortunately, results met with skepticism and disdain as the columns were hard to operate, temperamental and although producing high grades, could not achieve acceptable recoveries. Since the inception of column flotation technology, the degree of knowledge for design and operation of columns has vastly improved. Despite improvements in the technology, there is still some reluctance by mineral producers to investigate the use of column flotation cells for processing stages other than cleaner flotation. This characterization is in part due to the proven advantage of flotation columns in reducing gangue entrainment in the froth product which results in higher grade products and/or fewer processing stages. Also, during the development of column technology, different types of spargers have been used with varying degrees of success. Furthermore, the general knowledge base of parameters affecting column flotation design and operation have advanced tremendously. Inefficient, or primitive, sparger design, coupled with the lack of column design and operating knowledge and experience, resulted in poor metallurgical and mechanical performance in many cases. Unfortunately, this lack of knowledge caused many column installations to be characterized as failures. The industry felt that columns could not achieve high recoveries, especially when dealing with coarse particles. Therefore, columns were characterized as cleaners, where low recoveries could be tolerated as recirculating loads rather than direct losses and froth cleaning advantages of the quiescent column flotation regime could be realized. Fortunately for the minerals industry, some producers have stood at the forefront of technology and allowed the column to be utilized for new applications. In the last decade, column flotation applications have expanded to virtually every mineral system and plant location throughout the world. The expanded application of columns has generated a new wave of interest for processing various streams. One of the most notable is in the use of columns as rougher cells. This is of particular interest to "green-field" plants and plants where expansions are taking place. Here, metallurgical superiority can be combined with maximum capital and operating cost advantages for a rapid return on investment. The superior results experienced to date, have generated a cohesive vision of the future in mineral processing where flotation columns function as single stage primary separation devices (roughers) with a single stage cleaner, if necessary. The advantages of column flotation go far beyond their original uses. We now have seen columns used as final tail scavengers, in SX-EW plants and even at the end of CIL circuits. Some of these cases will be reviewed. CASE STUDIES In an attempt to show the diversification of column flotation to many facets of the mineral processing plant, a variety of case studies will be discussed. Some of these were designed by the authors while others have been provided by plant sources. It is important to note that in each successful case, the columns were designed using the author's design and scale-up approach. Cemented rockfill is a key component in the success of underground mining at the Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture. The Murray and SSX mines are characterized by relatively poor rock mass quality, and the goal of complete mining recovery makes maintaining a high quality backfill product vital to the safety and efficiency of the mining operations. A large portion of the ore production from the Murray mine originates from drifting under backfill. Modelling studies performed to investigate induced loading of the backfill were used to develop engineering specifications for the backfill material. Operations history has shown an almost 100 percent stability of the backfill when mining is carried out beneath it. The volume of backfill required each year (approximately 300,000 tons) and the required cement content have a significant impact on the total mining costs. The potential for cost savings associated with higher replacement of cement with Type "C" fly ash and the implementation of a backfill strength management strategy were therefore evaluated.

Thermodynamic solubility of chromium in pickling solutions (i.e., HF- HN03-H2O solutions) was determined as a function of HF and HNO3 acid concentrations at 298K. Pure Cr, AISI type 316 and 416 stainless steel were used in this study. The results showed that the solubility of Cr increased with increase in the concentrations of HF and HNO3 acids in solutions. The solubility of Cr increased in the order of pure Cr > 416 SS > 316 SS. The theoretically calculated Cr solubility data were in reasonable agreement with the experimental data.

The Witwatersrand reefs provide excellent examples of chemical and structural control on gold distribution. All mined gold appears to coma from a carbon -gold association and/or Fe-S-Au association, and also from immediately above or below unconformity surfaces. A total raliance on the current syngenetic model for Witwatersrand gold does not appear to be justified from the accumulated data and may be responsible for missed opportunities during exploration: consideration of other models is suggested especially where they better fit the data. The stratabound natura of Witwatersrand gold 1& critical to mining, but is emphasized in syngenetic models to the virtual exclusion of many other important observations. By analogy with other deposit types, stratabound character is probably a poor guide to genesis.

The disposal of plant tailings in a safe and environmentally acceptable manner has taken on increased importance throughout the world, across all types of mineral beneficiation plants. In the U.S. plant life span, expansions and new plants in the current robust mineral markets are faced with environmental pressures to minimize the use of land for disposal by maximizing existing tailings pond capacity. The combination of many drivers from economic to environmental have brought paste thickeners into the coal industry (PasteThick 2007) Thickening tailings to a more concentrated slurry is a common step in the disposal flow sheet. Thickening to a non-settling ?paste?, also called ?thickened tails? or ?tailings stacking?, is a relatively recent development. This paper describes the paste thickener as an alternative for dewatering a fine coal refuse (tailings) stream for deposit as a paste. Initial operating results of the paste thickener are discussed.

INTRODUCTION In looking over the diversity of the papers that are being presented during this meeting on The Industrial Practice of Fine Coal Processing one cannot help but be impressed with the progress the industry has made in beneficiating fine raw coals, and in the number of innovations that are under study to increase recovery and to improve the quality of the finest size particles produced at a preparation plant. Those who are not in our industry, who look at the technical program, might be confused, when they see that the papers include such topics as cleaning to zero and heavy media cyclone cleaning 28M x 100M; application and performance of fine coal jigs, tables, hydrocyclones, spirals, and flotation; filtration, dewatering and thermal drying; and ancilliary aspects such as fines handling, instrumentation and process control plus screening and liberation. This is an observation and not a criticism of the diversity of papers being presented. The program fits within the parameters of fine coal preparation as the term "coal preparation" is defined, but perhaps not as the term "fine coal" is defined. Admittedly these definitions are sometimes loose. However, each should be made more definitive if a meaningful fine coal preparation overview is to be possible. COAL PREPARATION DEFINED In the opinion of the writer, the term "coal preparation" should be defined as including all work activities that are performed on all components of a run-of-mine coal from the time it leaves a surface reserve or an underground portal, until all components are either ready for shipment or are stowed on, or in the earth in an environmentally acceptable manner. This definition excludes the work that is performed to improve coal quality or handleability inside the mine or pit. This work is commonly called "face" or "pit" preparation. FINE COAL DEFINED The term "fine coal" means different things to different people. In the past, anthracite finer than No. 3 Buckwheat (3/16 in.) was considered fines which often were discarded from the breaker as an unsalable by product; and bituminous coals finer that about 1/4 in. (slack) were either discarded or sold at cost to prevent an accumulation of "no bills" which referred to a product having no immediate sale. Although a standard definition of "fine coal" is yet to be accepted by the industry, a designation of coals by particle-size range has evolved through the wide use of three-circuit flowsheets, wherein the optimum size range by washer type determines the size fractions: a coarse-coal circuit for the plus 3/8 in., a -11- coal circuit for the 3/8 in. x 28 Mesh, and a fine-coal circuit for the remaining 28 Mesh x 0. Logically, the term "fine coal" should refer to some resultant size fraction or some top size by zero. This definition should include a 28 Mesh x 0 feed to a flotation cell but should exclude a 28 x 100 Mesh size fraction fed to a heavy media cyclone. Failure to include the resultant sizes in the definition precludes accounting of the full range of particle sizes present in the feed to the plant. Since the 28 Mesh x 0 fraction is treated in the final circuit of the three discreet washing circuits, now almost always used in U.S. commercial applications, and since it contains all of its resultant sizes, in the writer's opinion, it should be designated "fine coal". FINE COAL CLEANING Cleaning coal fines, which in the past was at best marginally profitable, is now an essential part of coal preparation strategy for a number of reasons : 1.
