The well-being of any company is directly related to the well-being of its employees and to the effectiveness with which the personnel resource is managed. In an era when personnel management has steadily become more complex, there is an increased awareness of employee information systems at all levels of management due to: (1) regulations enacted by federal, state, and local government agencies; (2) technological advances within the mining industry which have resulted in the requirement for highly skilled personnel; (3) increasing concern for the confidentiality of employee information; and (4) management's need for information for planning purposes to control costs and for early recognition of trends and potential problems. In the past it was sufficient to maintain records manually. Today computers are necessary to provide information on short notice and effectively manipulate large volumes of' data. This discussion will describe the following aspects of employee information systems: (1) collection and maintenance of information, and (2) applications which include employee health, salary administration, management re- sources, and labor negotiations.

Introduction Coal extraction by continuous miners (CM) is currently the most common underground method in the US industry and accounts for slightly more than two-thirds of the nation's deep mining production (National Coal Association, 1987). Even if longwall mining should become more commonplace, it can proceed only after ventilation and access entries have been driven by CMs. Since an area of concern continues to be the effects of the dust generated on the health of mineworkers, this paper discusses the relationship between the elemental compositon of mining-generated airborne dust sampled from the immediate ventilation return of a CM and laboratory-generated dust derived from channel samples taken from the mines. There are several potential contributions of this type of study to the coal mining industry. First, after more fundamental knowledge of the causes of Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis (CWP) is learned, the laboratory-generated respirable dust could be used to identify a potentially hazardous coal seam. Also, this study could possibly aid in understanding the fundamental causes of CWP by producing mining-simulated samples of coal dust that could be used in epidemiological studies. Further, assuming that there is no difference in the elemental composition of a drill-core sample and a channel sample from the same location, a mining company could predict a new mine's respirable dust elemental composition in the immediate ventilation return by using exploratory drill core samples of the roof, coal, and floor rock to prepare the laboratory dust. Ventilation engineers could then use engineering design and control measures during premine planning to reduce the incidence and severity of CWP by better ventilating the potentially hazardous coal seam. If this proper planning prevented any future changes to the ventilation equipment and mine design, much time and money could be saved. Scope of work To investigate the variability of the chemical characteris tics of respirable dust, airborne dust samples from eight underground coal mines located in the eastern and midwestern United States were collected with eight-stage Sierra Model 298 Marple cascade impactors, as well as 25 channel samples of mined material. Each channel sample was removed from the middle of the coal face before mining occurred. Sampling of the mining-generated dust was conducted by Lee (1986) by sampling the entire working sections, primarily for characterization purposes, to obtain information on the locational variability of dust characteristics. Research performed for this study used the elemental analyses of the mining-generated dusts he sampled in the immediate ventilation returns of CMs. The procedure that was used to produce the laboratory-generated respirable dust was based on the Hardgrove grindability test since it reflects the pulverizing characteristics of coal. This test was chosen for several additional reasons. First, it is repeatable and reproducible. A consistent amount of input energy is used as well as a specified size range of feed material to be crushed (the channel samples). Second, it is thought to generate secondary dust in a way similar to that of the crushing and grinding of the coal and rock as they pass through the arc-shaped cutting path of the CM's cutter head. The potential effect on dust generation by this secondary grinding mechanism may be at least as much as that produced by primary fragmentation, which is dust produced by the cutting action of the bit against the coal or rock (Roepke, 1984). Finally, the Hardgrove grindability test is well known and is used in the coal industry to guide mineral processing engineers in estimating the capacity of mills used to grind coal. One hypothesis of dust researchers in the Generic Technology Center for Respirable Dust is that the elemental as well as the physical characteristics of coal mine dust will make a difference in the incidence and severity of CWP. Coal mine dust is generated not only from coal, but also from any rock partings contained within the seam or any roof or floor material mined with the coal. Thus, coal mine dust may not have the same elemental characteristics as the coal being mined. Given that hypothesis, mixtures proportional to each thickness mined of roof, coal, and floor rock derived from the channel samples of the face areas from which the respirable dusts were generated by the CMs were used to produce the feed material that was pulverized in the Hardgrove machine.

She was young, beautiful, intelligent, virgin. Her name was Barbara and she captured the attention of many men, especially those in dangerous occupations. Her rich and doting father was hopeful of making an advantageous marriage for his daughter. Instead, she defied him, became a Christian, and refused to marry. Traumatized, he killed her and was himself struck dead by lightning. That is not the plot of a new soap opera. It is the melodramatic story of a Turkish teenager who was martyred in the third century but lives still as patron saint of mining. The story begins with a 20th century fact. Santa Barbara is a figment of imagination - perhaps based on an early oriental folk heroine, embroidered by a seventh century storyteller, and reworked by a ninth century Greek martyrologist. The authoritative Lives of the Saints reports: "There is ... Considerable doubt about the existence of a virgin martyr called Barbara and it is quite certain that her legend is spurious. There is no mention of her in the earlier martyrologies, her legend is not older than the seventh century, and her cult did not spread until the ninth." The Catholic Dictionary adds that the Barbara story is probably "a pious legend." Widely revered Santa Barbara was one of the most widely venerated saints of the Middle Ages. She became the patron, not only to miners, but also to artillerymen, engineers, architects, builders, stonemasons, gravediggers, and sailors. Mines, mountains, churches, and places bear her name. Barbara's feast day, Dec. 4, appears on the most ancient holy day calendars. And a Barbara festival is still celebrated throughout central Europe, in Spain, and in mining areas of Latin America on that date. The Pacific coast channel, the city, and the mission of California are named for Santa Barbara. An expedition, sailing that coast under Viscaino in 1602, was saved from shipwreck on Dec. 4 after the sailors prayed for Barbara's intervention. Franciscans gave her name to the modern Franciscan Province of Santa Barbara, which embraces six western states and the Philippine Islands. Barbara is intimately entwined with mining. Virginia Electric and Power Company commencing in early 1985 will begin operating the Bath County Pumped Storage hydroelectric facility, presently the largest capacity installation of its kind. Six concrete lined vertical shafts, 3 ea x 44.0 ft (13.4m) diam x 330 ft (100m) and 3 ea x 28.5 ft (8.7m) diam x 740 ft (226m), comprise a portion of the three underground power conduits. The project team decided to employ the slipform over the conventional jump form method. This selection was based on the engineer's hydraulic design and the contractor's performance requirements. This paper presents the key elements of the shafts' successful slipform operations. The contractor achieved slip rates as high as 60 ft (18m) per day; and the owner received competent permanent linings as specified by the engineer. The authors describe the team's effort to progressively improve both concrete quality and placement rate.

Most of those involved in the mining industry are aware of the negative feelings that the well-informed citizens of this country, also known as the American public, have for the industry. As noted in an issue of Mining World News, “The general public perceives mining as dirty, noisy, destructive and belonging somewhere else.” The same theme was raised at a conference in Scotland in July 1991. It was noted there that mining has an unattractive public image around the world “as dirty, dangerous work that pollutes and degrades the environment.” Why is this? Why does mining have such a bad rap? I’m afraid that some of the blame rests with the mining industry itself - both in the past and in the present. Hopefully, we can do something about this in the future. And hopefully, the information here will help the reader to spread the word to offset the negative messages being issued almost daily by industry foes. I hope this will become more than just the words of another miner talking to miners and their friends. In the past, belching smokestacks and polluted streams and waterways were common sights. Today, the negative results of mining operations can also be seen in the form of waste dumps, leaked acid mine waste water and dust blowing from tailings piles. Some will argue that mining did nothing illegal in the past, and that all the regulations in force at that time were carried out to the letter. That may be so. The fact remains, however, that mining did these things, and the evidence is very clear in many parts of the country. It is visible to the well-informed citizens, in spite of the fact that many mine sites have been cleaned up and new technologies, such as flash smelting, dump leaching, pressure leaching and bioleaching, have greatly overcome many of the pollution problems. What is not so visible is the importance of the mining industry in our daily lives. Not long ago, knowledge about our non-renewable mineral resources ranked low on the list of qualifications for being a well-informed citizen. Events during the past two decades have changed this scenario. Politicians, writers, newscasters, economists and administrators, as well as the ‘public,’ are expressing opinions and forming judgments on oil company profits, desecration of landscapes, waste disposal sites and pollution by the extractive industries.

"The mining environment presents challenging and complex situations for the application of medical care. The combination of remote locations, difficult access and longer response times may create an increase in morbidity and mortality in the event of serious accidents. The U.S Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has only minimal requirements of first aid training for mine workers. For mine rescue team members, MSHA requires medical training at the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) level, as only prescribed by mine rescue contest rules. This paper examines, based on mine accident statistical information, whether a higher level of medical training, for example at the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or at the Advanced Life Support (ALS) level can better address injuries most commonly disabling or leading to the death of miners in the United States. BACKGROUND Prehospital emergency medical care for the sick and injured has evolved considerably from first inception. Ambulances used to be staffed by persons with little training and equipment and prehospital care was focused largely on the rapid transport of the injured person to a hospital and. The modern prehospital care model was initially developed in military applications, where medics were responsible for some treatment on the battlefield and rapid transport to the care of a physician. In 1965, the National Academy of Sciences and National Research Council Committees on Trauma and Shock published Accidental Death and Disability: The Neglected Disease of Modern Society (National Research Council Committees on Trauma and Shock, 1966). This white paper laid out the consequences of the insufficiency of the Emergency Medical System (EMS) in the United States at that time. According to this paper, in 1965, 107,000 people were killed from accidental injury, with another 400,000 injured with permanent disability. The authors estimated that approximately 50% of ambulance services were provided by local morticians that were not capable of rendering advanced life support. The paper states that, based on experiences in the Vietnam war, seriously wounded soldiers had a better chance of survival in the battle field compared to traffic accident victims with similar traumatic injuries because the military was capable of providing first aid and efficient transportation to emergency care facilities. The white paper states that death rates from battle injuries declined significantly from 8% in World War I to 2% in Vietnam. The publication of this white paper is credited for the broad evolution and rapid advance of the civilian EMS system after 1965. It eventually lead to the creation of the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) National Standard Curricula (NSC) for emergency medical care in 1985. Training, and therefore required skill and knowledge for prehospital emergency care has continued to grow to reach the current standard."

The paper presents an analysis and discussion of the underground ventilation system at the waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), with particular emphasis on specific repository-related requirements and the gradual evolution of engineering designs relative to the WIPP Project scope. The underground facility has been constructed with three shafts. Additional studies, coupled with actual site-specific experience, have established? the need for construction of a fourth ventilation shaft to double the under-ground airflow. As a research pilot project, and the first of its type in combining mining and nuclear technologies, the WIPP Project is accumulating data and experience that may be fruitfully applied in the future designs of ventilation systems for planned commercial nuclear waste repositories.

1. INTRODUCTION The safe disposal of tailings is the most important environmental question facing the uranium mining industry today. This is because tailings present a major long term radiological hazard as they contain about 71% of the radioactivity originally in the ore. The magnitude of the problem can be appreciated by considering the quantity of tailings involved. For example, projections of milling programs in Australia indicate that there will be 100 million tonnes of tailings produced by the year 2000 (Levins 1980). The United States currently has in excess of 100 million tonnes and by the year 2000 will have between 900 and 1700 million tonnes (Landa 1980). Present options for tailings rehabilitation include leaving them above ground, returning them to the mine or placing them in specially excavated pits. In any event, the tailings will be covered with earth and revegetation attempted. This will remove the problems of airborne radioactive dust and water erosion of the tailings, at least in the short term, but diffusion of radon-222* from the tailings may still occur. The Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada (1981) has proposed a maximum allowable radon flux from rehabilitated tailings of 0.074-0.37 Bq m -2s-1(2-10 pCi M-2 s-1); the exact level is to be determined "after discussion with other regulatory agencies and the industry". The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC 1980) has been more restrictive in recommending a maximum flux of 0.074 Bq m -2s-1 (2 pCi m-2s-1). As a guideline they also suggested a minimum depth of covering material of 3 m to achieve this surface flux for tailings typically found in the western milling regions of the United States. The design of rehabilitation schemes is aided by a knowledge of radon transport through tailings piles. In this paper we present the results of a theoretical analysis and experimental study of radon diffusion through selected Australian tailings and cover material. The minimum cover criteria of 3 m is reexamined in the light of these findings. [ ]

The Copper Creek area, part of the Bunker Hill District, Pinal County, Arizona, lies within the southwest porphyry copper province of North America at the intersection of a northwest trend and an east-northeast trend of Laramide porphyry copper deposits. The Copper Creek area has been mined and explored for copper and molybdenum since the early 1900?s. The majority of this work focused on the more than 400 surface exposed breccia bodies. In the 1960 to 1970?s deeper drilling discovered a deep porphyry copper-like setting. Redhawk Copper currently has NI 43-101 compliant resources of about 0.652 billion pounds of measured and indicated and 2.745 billion pounds of inferred copper equivalent in breccia hosted and porphyry style deposits. I. INTRODUCTION The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) is a regional water and sewerage authority which provides wholesale water and sewer services to the Metropolitan Boston area. The MWRA was created by the Massachusetts Legislature as an independent authority in 1985 following the filing of a lawsuit in federal court to correct the pollution of Boston Harbor resulting from inadequate and inadequately maintained sewerage facilities. Immediately upon its creation, the MWRA began to tackle treatment plant issues, including addressing the need for a secondary treatment plant, planning for ceasing ocean discharging of sludge, and making interim repairs to the existing, antiquated treatment plants. The MWRA's initial activities led to a court-ordered schedule for construction of a single new primary and secondary treatment facility, for development of sludge management plan focussed principally on reuse, and for completion of a short term program of repairs to existing facilities. Once a schedule for completing these activities had been negotiated, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a plaintiff in the federal court case, asked that the MWRA take "responsibility" for controlling discharges from combined sewer overflows (CSOs) within its service area. This case history really started during the tail end of WWII when two Navy men, both Colorado School of Mines graduates, got together in Washington, DC, while they were assigned to the Office of Navy Petroleum Reserves doing some of the first aerial magnetometer work ever done on a practical oil exploration basis over the offshore area of the Gulf Coast. When separated from Naval Service active duty in 1946, the two men, Walter E. Heinrichs, Jr., and Robert E. Thurmond, tried, unsuccessfully, to form a commercial air magnetometer business. Later they got together again in Jerome, AZ, with Newmont Mining's early geophysical exploration endeavors from 1947 to 1949. Subsequent to the Newmont experience, they jointly proposed a specific mining geophysical exploration and development program to Herbert Hoover, Jr., then president of United Geophysical Co. of Pasadena, CA. Mr. Hoover, in consultation with his father Herbert Hoover and others of his staff at United, particularly Edwin G. Schempf, executive vice president, and Raymond A. Peterson, vice president of research, agreed to establish the proposed program under United's auspices, to be headquartered at Tucson, AZ. The primary objective would be to practically test and develop various mining geophysical methods and techniques while exploring particularly for base metals in the general area of southeast Arizona and southwest New Mexico.

This paper discusses the drilling techniques and equipment used by Loffland Brothers Company to drill the AEC's UC-3 large diameter shaft in Nevada. Included are pictures and illustrations of the drilling-mud circulating system, the surface and downhole drill-string and the special heavy-duty mast and hoisting equipment required to do the job. The purpose and method of lining the large diameter holes along with the technique and materials used to backfill the lining to hole annulus are discussed briefly. Areas requiring improvement in both equipment design and technology for large diameter shaft drilling are discussed briefly. Shafts as large as 140 inches in diameter to depths of 5,000 feet can be drilled with existing equipment and technology.

In the present paper, two large diameter columns 2 m tall and 1.3 m diameter filled with crushed (finer) and run off mine (coarser) heap leach materials respectively were used to perform unsaturated flow studies. Instruments measuring moisture content and matric suction were placed in the columns at different depths as water was applied at calibrated flow rates from the top of the columns. The outflows from the columns were recorded using tipping bucket rain gauge placed at the bottom of the columns. Unsaturated hydraulic parameters were also obtained for the heap leach materials, scalped (passing 4.75 mm sieve size) and whole (passing 37.5 mm sieve size) sample. The measurements obtained from the columns were later compared with unsaturated flow modeling results. The comparison indicated sensitivity towards the sample size selection for unsaturated hydraulic parameters, and initial conditions considered in the model.

Before and in the early stages of industrialization, mining was the undisputed leader in technology. It represented the high-tech of the time. Early mechanization bears witness to that. Hoisting and rock breaking driven by waterpower are such examples. The mines' use of the steam engine was a major incentive to its development. By these means new mines could be opened and more metal supplied. Understanding of systems was essential for miners when shaping the infrastructure of the mines for the transportation of ore, material and men and for the evacuation of water and for ventilation. The irrigation systems of ancient mines are such examples. However, with the industrial revolution other more specialized branches of industry advanced further, and the mines became users of other industrial branches technologies. The mining industry had, however, always been quick to recognize a good thing and use it, when time was right. But, compared with other branches of industry, the mining industry has the disadvantage of working in a rugged environment with (and actually inside) a raw material which is abrasive and highly variable with respect to mechanical properties. This determines the rather high unpredictability of mining machines' performances and their low availabilities and explains a part of the delays in introducing technological advances.

On October 27, 1972, ground was broken for the first section of the Second Avenue Subway, a two track underground rail system that was to extend from the south end of Manhattan at Broad Street, north to the Harlem River at 126th Street, a distance of eight miles. This ground breaking was the culmination of 67 years of planning for an east side subway in Manhattan. Following the successful opening of New York City's first subway on October 1904 there was a mass planning for additional subways throughout the City. In 1905 approval was requested of the Board of Estimate for a First Avenue route and Third Avenue route. The Third Avenue route was approved but when action was not taken to start construction, the approval in accordance with the conditions under which it was given was withdrawn. Further reports and plans for an east side subway, usually to be constructed on Third Avenue, were issued in 1920, in 1922, in 1924, etc. Those of us who had worked on the Sixth and Eighth Avenue subways in the thirites and early forties left to join the armed services of World War II in the expectation that we would return and start work on designing and constructing that east side subway. The reason that much of the thrust in those years was to construct on Third Avenue was that there was a Third Avenue "EL" and business interests of the City were in favor of its demolition. This demolition was accomplished in 1955 so one of the incentives to construct on Third Avenue was removed; but an east side subway was always part of the master plan of the City.

Miners working in underground mines where diesel equipment is used are exposed to exhaust pollutants. These include carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO,), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), hundreds of different hydrocarbons (HC) and particulate matter. Evidence from animal inhalation studies and limited epidemiological investigations have led the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to recommend that ‘... whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a potential occupational carcinogen ...’ NIOSH further stated that ‘... the excess cancer risk for workers exposed to diesel exhaust has not yet been quantified, but the probability of developing cancer should be decreased by minimizing exposure…’ The International Agency for Research on Cancer(IARC) reached a similar conclusion, saying that ‘... diesel engine exhaust is probably carcinogenic to humans.’ Before these declarations, there was insufficient evidence concerning the carcinogenicity of diesel exhaust. It was well known, though, that diesel exhaust caused less severe problems, such as headache, eye irritation and unpleasant odors. In 1988, a milestone was reached in the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulatory process. An advisory committee recommended a three-tier approach to regulating diesels used underground-approval of diesel equipment, safety and health. Diesel particulate matter may be specifically regulated. In addition, ambient air quality standards are being proposed that will establish a new standard for CO2 and lower the permissible exposure limits for the NO2, CO, SO2 and formaldehyde emissions that originate from diesels and other sources. Additional safety and emission restrictions are also proposed for diesel engines in coal mines. The goal of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) diesel engine research program is to minimize the health and safety problems associated with underground diesel equipment use. Part of this program is focused on reducing exhaust emissions from diesel-powered equipment used in underground mines.

The West Side CSO Tunnel, Pump Station & Pipeline Project is currently beginning construction along the downtown waterfront of Portland, Oregon. This4.3 meter diameter, 5,500 meter-long soft ground tunnel will be driven along the westbank of the Willamette River adjacent to buildings and utilities and several major pile-supported bridges. High groundwater pressure, extended lengths of gravel to cobble-size alluvium, and the need to control ground loss and surface settlements were key considerations in the selection of slurry tunnel boring machines for the project This paper presents an overview of the numerical modeling that was performed during design to estimate the strains and additional loads in the pile-supported structures and to assess the efficiency of proposed mitigation measures.

Introduction A new technology is evolving as a result of growing industry and government concerns over the potential impacts of possible airborne emissions from uranium tailings piles. A major component of the technology is the use of earth covers to stabilize the tailings after mill operations have ceased. While various analytical models have been used to predict the thickness of required covers, experimental validation of the models has been necessary. This paper presents the results of a field program to select and test cover material to determine its suitability for eventual reclamation of a currently active tailings pile. The two main criteria guiding the study were the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission radon flux requirements (reduction to less than twice background pre-1979, and to 2 pCi/m2 -sec above background post-1979) and the desire to employ locally available material. The methodology chosen for this study consisted of three main elements: o Determination of the background radon flux. o Determination of the radon flux from the tailings pile. o Experimental determination of the cover material diffusion coefficient and and calculation of cover thickness. The first two elements of the study are relatively straightforward, the last phase is discussed in detail. Background Radon Flux Measurements of radon-222 emanation rates from the surface of the ground were taken at three sampling locations. Samples were collected by means of the accumulator can method described by Wilkening, 1977. Both morning and afternoon samples were collected at each site to obtain an average. The measured fluxes were fairly uniform and did not differ greatly among sites. The overall average flux for all sites was 0.63[+]0.28(o) pCi/m2 -sec. This value is equal to the average radium-226 concentration determined in the soil, thus yielding a one to one ratio of radon-222 emitted (in pCi/m2 -sec) to soil radium content (in pCi/g). INTRODUCTION The selective sensitivity of plastic nuclear track detectors (PNTD's) to low energy 4He particles in an environment which also contains gamma and beta radiations has made these detectors prime candidates for the dosimetric measurement of the concentrations of radon and its daughter products in mine air. Their passive, integrating mode of measurement, small size, low weight and inexpensiveness are attractive characteristics for large scale personnel dosimetry. The detectors can be used in either active or passive dosimeters. In active devices, the PNTD is placed in close proximity to a sampling filter. The filter collects, from a calibrated air flow, all the daughter nuclei which are in suspension. As the daughter nuclei pass through the decay chain, through 214Po, a fraction of the 4He particles emitted are registered as latent tracks in the plastic. In passive devices, the PNTD is placed in direct contact with the ambient air containing the radio-nuclei concentrations to be determined. The active dosimeters have the advantage of excellent sensitivity, and the measured track densities yield very close approximations to accumulated Working Level (WL)** exposures. They have the disadvantage that the simplicity of the passive PNTD is lost, since a battery-driven constant flow-rate air pump is a necessity. The passive dosimeters are simple in construction and use, but they have the disadvantage that WL exposures are not directly measured and certain assumptions concerning radon and daughter equilibrium conditions must be made in determining WL exposures from the measured track densities. Also the sensitivities, in track densities per Working Level Hour (WLH) exposure, are much less than for active dosimeters. Dosimeters of both types have been investigated. Passive devices have been tested extensively both in the laboratory and in mines. Active devices have been laboratory tested. In our earlier measurements, cellulose nitrate plastic detectors were used exclusively, since this material had the highest sensitivity of the PNTD's then in use. When the properties of CR-39 plastic were discovered (Cartwright, 1978; Cassou and Benton, 1978), this material was used, where possible, to take advantage of its superior sensitivity. PASSIVE DOSIMETRY In the earliest testing of PNTD's for passive WL dosimetry, a single strip of cellulose nitrate plastic was used to determine the total cumulative 4He-particle activity in the air of simulated uranium mine and uranium mine environments (Rock, 1968; Rock [et al], 1969; White, 1969). The measurements yielded a close relationship between track densities and WL exposures in a controlled, static environment, but poor accuracy in the active mine tests. It was assumed that equilibrium differences contributed largely to the variations found. The response of PNTD's to airborne 4He-particle emitters, derived by Lovett (1969), demonstrated that detectors such as cellulose nitrate, which has a sensitivity cutoff at 4He-particle energies below the emission energies of radon and its daughters, are equally sensitive to the activity concentrations of radon, 218po(RaA) and 214Po(RaC'). Since radon does not contribute to WL as it is defined, and since, under normal ventilated uranium mine conditions, the radon activity constitutes about 40% to 70% of the total 4He-particle activity, the WL exposures calculated from measured track densities are very sensitive to the particular radon daughter equilibrium conditions. Also, the detector does not weight the individual daughter activities in proportion to their importance to WL. The equation for WL is WL = 0.00103C2 + 0.00507C3 + 0.00373C4 (1) where C2, C3 and C4 are the activity concentrations of RaA, RaB and RaC-C', respectively, in pCi/[L]. The detector leaves C3 unmeasured and weights C2 and C4, equally. [This problem has been approached by Domanski et al (1975, 1979), for some non-uranium mines, by measuring equilibrium conditions throughout the mines to determine a mean value for A, the inverse of the Working Level Ratio (WLR = 100 WL where C1 is the activity of radon-222 in pCi/[L].) The distribution of values allowed Domanski to determine probable errors in calculating WL exposures from track densities. However, measurements of equilibrium conditions in U.S. uranium mines (Breslin et al, 1969; Holub and Droullard, 1978) indicate that this method would not be accurate enough for uranium miner personal dosimetry.] A two-element dosimeter was designed at our laboratory to compensate for equilibrium variations. The first element is a radon detector; the second is a detector for the total 4He-particle activity in the ambient air, just as in the single element dosimeters cited above. The addition of the radon detector allows the equilibrium conditions for the individual nuclei to be determined, given certain assumptions concerning the interrelationships between the nuclei concentrations in mine air. The two detectors and the problems involved in calculating WL exposures from their measurements are discussed below.
