The tungsten carbide insert bit has probably advanced blasthole drilling more than any other single improvement. Tungsten carbide inserts have longer life, maintain sharper edges, and penetrate faster than hardened steel edge bits. Before the tungsten carbide hit appeared, all-steel bits were used. Even with the new bits, blasthole drilling costs vary with the type of equipment used and its condition; the hole's length and diameter; the rock's texture, hardness, and nature; the operator efficiency. To help reduce drilling costs, the operator should be familiar with the use and care of drill bits. This article provides information about tungsten carbide rock bits used for percussion drilling. Consideration of tungsten carbide rock bits includes looking at bit materials [ ] as well as bit operation and maintenance. Two basic tungsten carbide rock hits are the button bit and the four-wing carbide insert bit. Three common hit-to-drill-steel connections are the bottom drive, tapered drive, and shoulder drive. Bottom drive bits arc typically used for singlepass or longhole drilling, with all percussion drills from handheld sinkers to heavy track drills. Tapered socket bits are available with shallow or deep carhide inserts, for the lowest cost depending on the rock type being drilled. Shoulder drive bits are available in all-steel or carbide insert design.

The desire to minimize gaseous effluent in smelting and maximize gold yields from refractory ore are driving the nonferrous and gold refining industries to demand more and more oxygen. This, coupled with an increasingly competitive marketplace, forces the investigation of alternate methods of oxygen supply. Current progress in both the non-cryogenic and cryogenic fields is making the use of low-purity oxygen much more attractive. The benefits of on-site production are now available to most oxygen users. Historically, these on-site advantages could only be achieved by relatively large plants using high-purity cryogenic technology. The evolution of low-purity cryogenic and non­cryogenic oxygen production has added a new method of delivering on-site production. Specifically, the advent of oxygen Vacuum Swing Adsorption (VSA) technology has brought these benefits to smaller-volume customers by cost-effectively supplying oxygen requirements as low as 20 tons per day, (tpd). Low-purity cryogenic plants have also made an impact on the market, yielding cost reductions for larger-volume customers with oygen requirements greater than 70 tpd. This paper reviews the advantages and disadvantages of current supply methods for users having varying volume, purity and other requirements.

Climax byproduct-plant tailing assayed 0.019% WO3. Pilot-plant and laboratory tests were performed to investigate the possibility of recovering additional tungsten values from the byproduct-plant tailing. The methodology used in the study and the results of this investigation are discussed.

INTRODUCTION In 1979 the Committee on Radiological Protection and Public Health of the Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD) defined a programme of work needed to improve radon dosimetry and monitoring. A Group of Experts in this field was established by the NEA and at the first meeting of the Group the authors were designated an initial task with the following terms of reference:- To review dosimetry of radon, thoron and their daughters, and in particular:- - to examine analytical models for the assessment of dose to individuals who are exposed to aerosol mixtures of these nuclides; - to examine the state of knowledge of the characteristics of aerosol mixtures of these nuclides and other factors that influence the dose to the lung, and identify those parameters which should be measured for dosimetric purposes in radiological surveillance programmes; - to identify areas where further study or research are needed. In this presentation we attempt to examine, with these objectives, the relationship between exposure to radon and thoron daughter aerosols expressed in terms of the working level month l (WLM), or its SI equivalent, and dose accumulated by sensitive tissues of the lower respiratory tract. Over the past two decades many attempts have been made to calculate the lung dose equivalent to l WLM exposure in mine atmospheres, usually in terms of the maximum dose to basal cells in a small part of the bronchial tree. The calculations have employed variously detailed models of airway anatomy, aerosol deposition, ciliary clearance and dosimetry of tissue at the bronchial surface, and are well reviewed elsewhere (Walsh, 1970; UNSCEAR, 1977; Jacobi, 1977; Fry, 1977). They agree in the conclusion that basal cells in segmental bronchi (between about the third and fifth bronchial generations) receive the highest dose, although estimates of this dose differ by more than an order of magnitude, ranging from about 0.2 to 12 rads per WLM (2 mGy to 120 mGy). The most critical parameters of these models are the assumed depths of basal cells below the bronchial surface and the fraction of the WL carried by free ions. When more realistic values of these parameters are substituted (Jacobi, 1977), the dispersion in calculated maximum doses to basal cells is reduced to give a much smaller range from about 0.3 to 1 rad/WLM (3 to 10 mGy/WLM). The parameters and methods employed in these various models, however, remain too diverse to infer the sensitivity of the dose conversion to practical variations in aerosol characteristics and the additional factors determining lung deposition and clearance. We have therefore taken the approach of developing newer models (Jacobi and Eisfeld, 1980; James et al, 1980) that can encompass the range of available experimental data on the physical and biological behaviour of radon and thoron daughters and also accommodate the different interpretations that can be put upon them. Sandsloot open pit is situated on the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex, 250 km north east of Johannesburg, South Africa. Sandsloot is currently the largest open pit platinum mine in the world and is one of six potential open pits in the area. The geotechnical strength properties of the Platreef have posed significant mining and processing challenges to the PPRust operation since inception in 1992. In order to optimise the whole business as opposed to isolated cost centres a mine to mill initiative was embarked upon in 1997. Initial work focussed on ore characterisation and an entire suite of data was collected for each rock type. This included mineralogy, geochemistry, geotechnical, blastability indices as well as metallurgical strength data. The second phase involved the clear definition of customer requirements, namely the optimum performance criteria for the plant and mining departments. This involved extensive field trials and data capture to measure the interaction and influence of the mine to mill value chain. Once the design targets were defined a 3D geotechnical model was constructed to ensure that the targets were consistently achieved. The model is very similar to an ore reserve model however it is populated with geotechnical, metallurgical and blast index data. Through software queries the appropriate blast powder factor for each mining block can be obtained thereby ensuring the correct fragmentation is blasted for the plant and mining operation. The initiative has delivered significant results showing improvements across the mine to mill value chain. These include increased loading rates, reduced electricity and crushing consumables as well as higher plant throughput. Additionally, the initiative has benefited both Brownfield and Greenfield projects on the PPRust operation.

Electrowinning is a key process for copper production contributing roughly twenty percent globally and thirty to forty percent of production in the Americas1. Copper grade is assessed largely on deposit smoothness and on level of impurities in the metal. Smoothing aids are essential to create dense, low porosity deposits and guar has long been the material of choice for this purpose. Guar is, however, poorly stable under the strongly acidic electrowinning conditions, underlying ongoing research to identify an effective, acid-tolerant replacement. Current efficiency is also a critical factor in controlling copper production costs and chemical additives should ideally improve current efficiency as well as improving deposit smoothness.

In this paper the main subsidence- ground-structure interactions and an overview of the response of surface structures to subsidence ground movements are presented. The purpose of the paper is to augment our understanding for more effective application of available data as well as to highlight the essential site conditions in building response. The data presented general1 y applies to houses to structures up to 2-3 stories high and no more than several hundred feet in length. Superstructures of these buildings are supported by exterior (wood-frame or masonry) bearing walls with the interior floor loads carried by essentially one row of interior columns. This paper is not directed towards the response of tall buildings, steel-framed structures, or building types commonly associated with schools, churches, libraries, etc.

As you know, NIOSH is the part of the United States Public Health Service with responsibility for conducting and supporting research leading to prevention and control of occupational diseases and injuries. Some years ago, NIOSH went through a process of identifying and leading occupational health and safety problems in the United States. Candidate problems were evaluated in terms of the number of people affected, the importance of the effects, and how amenable the conditions are to preventive interventions. Lung diseases were ranked first on the resulting list. Diseases from mining continue to contribute substantially to this unfortunate position of prominence. The work of the Generic Center is one of many answers to this critical problem. Although the research is often expressed in terms of dust characterization or dust control, the reality is that high dust levels are much like high blood pressure. No one cares about hypertension per se. We are concerned about the consequences of exposure to untreated high blood pressure--heart disease, kidney disease, and stroke. Similarly, if dusts were truly only a nuisance, there would be little justification for the diverse research program supported by the Bureau of Mines or by NIOSH. But mineral dusts do cause a range of significant health problems: pneumoconiosis, bronchitis, and emphysema. The research supported by the Center is aimed at doing something about them. Within a public health approach to occupational health, we have a hierarchy of interventions. Primary prevention of problems is prevention at the source: solving a problem before it affects a worker. What we call secondary prevention is an attempt to identify health problems at a sufficiently early stage that some intervention will interrupt the disease process or the development of significant impairment. Tertiary prevention refers to rehabilitation of the worker who has already suffered significant loss of function. At NIOSH, and in the Generic Center research programs, the focus is on primary prevention. Basic investigations into those things about specific dusts that promote or reduce toxicity is critical for our understanding of how to prevent disease. Also, the search for engineering solutions to reduce or control dust generation is essential to solving problems of dust over-exposure. But until the engineers create the foolproof safe environment, it will also be necessary to discover better ways to identify the earliest markers of disease. To do this, we must explore and explicate the basic mechanisms of disease through laboratory investigations as well as human observation and physiologic testing. The unique opportunity provided by the Generic Center program and highlighted in this diverse program over the next few days is that these efforts are being carried out in multiple disciplines concurrently. Also, there are periodic small and large gatherings such as this one where investigators have the chance to get together, formally present papers, and informally stimulate each other's progress towards disease prevention. To ignore the potential for this cross-cutting interaction would be a significant loss. To take full advantage of it is potentially revolutionary. I recently pulled out a book I hadn't read since I was an undergraduate. It specifically concerns the nature of intellectual ferment surrounding the development of the concept of a sun-centered rather than an earth-centered universe in the sixteenth century. The book is about more than developments in astronomy: it is a discussion of the nature of scientific revolutions. Scientific revolutions result from the brilliance, insight, and good fortune of the few superimposed on the evolutionary work of the many. They both cause and reflect significant itellectural and social ferment. For example, the revolutionary work of Copernicus in recognizing the limitations of the concept of an earth-centered universe reflected contemporaneous developments in optics, mathematics, physics, economics, and philosophy.

As a means of permanent disposal, fine coal refuse is often pumped as a slurry into surface impoundments. As the available volume is filled, the embankment heights are frequently increased. The additional embankment material is often placed upon consolidated fine coal refuse. There has been concern about the long-term effect of consolidation of this material at or above the liquid limit on its shear strength. A laboratory investigation was performed using three different types of fine coal slurry taken from central Appalachian coal-preparation plants. The refuse was consolidated in 3-m (10 ft) Plexiglas columns under incremental amounts of surcharge loading. The incremental loads were designed to simulate the effect of increasing the height of a refuse embankment on top of the consolidating coal slurry. After the refuse in the columns had consolidated for several months, the columns were cut apart, and triaxial tests were performed on both the consolidated and unconsolidated material for comparison of their shear-strength parameters.

In December of 1999, Newmont Mining Corporation’s Eastern Nevada Operations commissioned its commercial biooxidation facility. The commercial biooxidation facility is a refractory gold whole ore heap process that uses bacteria to assist with the oxidation of sulfide minerals thus liberating occluded gold for further processing by cyanide for gold extraction. Before the commercial biooxidation facility was started, a decade of research went in to developing this state-of-the-art process. During final design and construction of the commercial facility a decline in gold price necessitated cost saving and project scope changes. As a result, the biooxidation process experienced many challenges. Some of the more significant challenges include poor heap permeability due to haul truck stacking, unhealthy bacteria population due to a lack of solution aeration, and insufficient biooxidation time because of limited pad space and high carbonate content in the ore. This paper discusses the many challenges encountered and addressed during the first 2-3 years of commercial biooxidation operation.

The electrochemical reactions involved in a zinc sulfide flotation concentrate leaching with sulfuric acid in presence and absence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, as well as with ferric chloride - hydrochloric acid containing media, have been investigated. The cyclic voltammetric measurements revealed that many intermediate electrochemical reactions are involved in the zinc sulfide leaching. Using chronoamperometric and chronopotentiometric techniques, it was found that the leaching process is controlled by solid - state diffusion. The activation energy of solid - state diffusion process was determined by the Price's approach to be 21.3 kJ. The leaching mechanism is discussed in terms of solid - state properties (energy bondings) of the high energy gap solid zinc sulfide semiconductor and energy density states of redox systems of acidic leach media. A generalized model for the mechanism of zinc sulfide oxidation is present.

This can be done with a number of assessments: 1) accurately measure KWH usage and track peak demand periods first; 2) identify the electrical equipment that affects your usage and the conditions that require it to be running; 3) remotely monitor and control as much equipment as possible, especially larger pieces of equipment; 4) with your utility determine that you are on the most suitable rate for your usage profile, then understand how your utility company calculates your electrical bill; 5) recognize how production affects energy usage and utility costs; 6) keep historical records of everything you monitor; 7) make information, live and historical, available to everyone; and finally, with the knowledge of your equipment and energy needs, automate controls that you have identified to optimize your energy usage and time of usage.

Strontium occurs commonly in nature, averaging 0.034% of all igneous rock; however, only two minerals, celestite and strontianite, contain strontium in sufficient quantities to make its recovery practical, and these minerals are found in sedimentary rocks. Of the two, only celestite has been found to occur in deposits of sufficient size to make development of mining facilities currently attractive. Celestite, the most common strontium mineral, consists primarily of strontium sulfate (SrSO,). Strontianite, the second most common mineral, consists primarily of strontium carbonate (Sr CO3). Strontianite would be the more useful of the two common minerals because strontium is used most commonly in the carbonate form, but few deposits have been discovered that are suitable for development. The physical properties of strontium ores are listed in [Table 1].

Adrian is an Australian who graduated in 1973 with an honors degree in geology from Newcastle University, New South Wales. His extensive international experience has spanned exploration, project development, and operations for both large and small companies in Australasia, Southeast Asia, North and South America, and Africa. Adrian has been with the Golden Star group of companies for four years and he is responsible for all exploration activity. ABSTRACT Golden Star acquired the rights to the Omai prospect in 1985 at a time when the country of Guyana was out of favor with the exploration fraternity. Subsequently in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Golden Star acquired exploration properties in Suriname and French Guiana well ahead of its competitors. Golden Star's strategy entailed identifying windows of opportunity and aggressively pursuing them. We also recognized that the Guiana Shield hosted a significant area of highly prospective greenstones which were comparable in metallogenic potential to similar terrains in eastern Canada, western Australia and west Africa. The geological skills Golden Star developed and the exploration techniques employed to explore deeply weathered rocks are described. The paper highlights the key elements of Golden Star's strategy and illustrates how some of the milestones reached by the company led Golden Star to establish an enviable portfolio of gold and diamond properties in the Guiana Shield.

The following is a summary of the Robert E. Murray Innovation Lecture on “Sustainable Copper Mining Flowsheets and the MissionZero Mine” presented as part of the keynote session on Feb. 23, 2026 during the MINEXCHANGE 2026 SME Annual Conference & Expo in Salt Lake City, UT. As the world accelerates its transition to renewable energy, the appetite for critical minerals such as copper, lithium, nickel, rare earths and graphite has never been greater. Forecasts suggest that global mineral demand will double by 2050, driven by the proliferation of electric vehicles, renewable power infrastructure and digital technologies. This surge presents not only an immense opportunity but also an unprecedented challenge. In a world where every ton of ore processed and every liter of water used is scrutinized, how can mining deliver more with less, while meeting tightening environmental and social expectations? Traditional mining methods, developed for an era of abundant, high-grade ore and looser regulations, are struggling to meet today’s demands. During the last 15 years, the North American Mining Industry has experienced increasing usage of cast high chromium white iron grinding media in wet grinding applications. First introduced into the cement industry (klinker grinding) where wear rate reductions of four or five times have been realized compared to steel balls, this same grinding media serve the iron, copper, and phosphate markets by resisting not only impacts and abrasion, but also corrosion which occurs in wet grinding. In these markets, single mills containing 250,000 kg of grinding balls are not un-common and hence the economic potential with respect to lower wear rates can be significant. Add to reduced wear rate the increased production efficiency that is possible and it is readily understood why much of the mining industry uses cast high chromium grinding media. Metallurgically, the alloys used consist of a martensitic matrix containing hard M7C3 eutectic carbides. Carbon (2.0 to 3.5%) and chromium (12 to 277.) are characteristically used to arrive at the desired properties.

Background of Ocean Mining Research Inspired by the 1970?s deep seabed mining activities of other nations, China started ocean mining research work within the framework of the International Law of the Sea Treaty (UNCLOS) and the subsequent establishment of the International Seabed Authority in the 1990?s. This work has been carried out mainly with the cooperation of the Changsha Research Institute of Mining And Metallurgy. We have been committed to this work to fulfill our responsibilities and obligations as a Pioneer investor under UNCLOS and also to support the much needed development of deep-sea technology in China. Exciting recent advances by Nautilus Minerals in the development of seafloor massive sulfide deposit exploitation has led us to a new perspective of ocean mining and some re-evaluation of ocean mining economics. This has provided us with an opportunity to support more efforts in ocean mining research. We will not delay the development of our ocean mining system and corresponding technology, although commercial mining in the deep-sea area may not occur for many years.

In mechanized roadheading predominantly two methods of rock breakage are applied at present: the cutting method by means of picks and the cutting/crushing method by means of roller cutters. Both systems meanwhile reached a high degree of technical development and consequently show very few possibilities of further improvement. While application of hard-metal picks is limited by rock hardness, the roller cutters require a high specific thrust, and, accordingly, heavy carrier systems. Roller-cutter equipped tunneling machines are therefore only cost-effective in hard-coal mining if the high investments for transport and assembly are justified by a corresponding length of road to be headed. The limit for acceptable cost-effectiveness is at present a minimum heading length of approximately 3 km. Vegetative stabilization can help meet the esthetic objections and pollution problems posed by mine wastes. However, mine wastes are often unfavorable growth media and special treatments and techniques are needed for plant establishment and continued growth. The establishment of vegetation on mine wastes was the subject of many papers presented at the International Symposium on Ecology and Revegetation of Drastically Disturbed Areas held at Pennsylvania State University on August 3-16, 1969. This paper is a summary of those papers presented at the symposium that dealt with the nutritional and physical aspects of plant establishment on a variety of mine wastes. The synopsis presented is a combination of excerpts from the abstracts, notes on the oral presentations, and rough drafts of some of the papers. The papers will eventually be published in the symposium proceedings.
