The Penjom gold mine treats highly preg-robbing carbonaceous ore by using relatively inexpensive gravity and hydrometallurgical methods. The mine is a joint venture between Avocet Gold Limited, a subsidiary of Avocet Mining PLC, a U.K listed mining company with interests in gold and tungsten, and the Pahang State Development Corporation (PKNP) who receive a 2% royalty. The operating team at Penjom embarked on a programme of innovation during 1998 following a realisation that almost all of the primary ore in the gold deposit was highly carbonaceous in nature. Earlier attempts at desliming and leaching the deslimed product through a normal CIL circuit had failed, and through shear necessity, the team turned to new technologies which were considered most suited to the ore characteristics indicated from pre­feasibility testwork. Between April and September, 1998, the mine introduced three key processes, which combined represent the elements of "The Penjom Process". The gravity circuit was boosted to maximise the capture of leachable sulphide and free gold from the relatively carbon free cyclone underflow stream, kerosene and diesel blanking was introduced to treat the cyclone overflow and RIL (resin-in­leach) technology utilised to replace the existing CIL (carbon-in-leach) circuit. Further experimentation with selective resin in partnership with Mintek of South Africa yielded a significant improvement to the process during 1999. Minix­Dowex resin was introduced mid year to replace a non-gold selective resin, which had been used in a flotation/batch leaching circuit for about nine months. Lower carbon levels in the feed at that stage led to the abandonment of flotation and the introduction of continuous RIL, which has been adopted as the major chemical process at the Penjom gold mine since September, 1999. Given the proven performance of the circuit to date, this process may be considered as a low cost option for the treatment of highly carbonaceous ores, particularly those which are not refractory and contain a reasonable percentage of free gold.

In-pit identification of neutral waste rock at the Zortman and Landusky minesites in Montana, by visual and chemical analy­ses, will assist in proper segregation and placement of rock so that soil and water resources can be protected. The use of too few or very general segregation criteria to identify neutral waste rock can result in ineffective waste rock segregation. Conversely, the use of overly restrictive criteria can result in the unnecessary loss of valuable reclamation material that would otherwise have to be mined elsewhere and hauled to the site. Recognition of nonre­active materials can be accomplished on a site specific basis with the use of visual observation and simple chemical analyses. The choice of chemical parameters used to analyze rock samples is constrained by the length of time needed to conduct the test. These analyses must require no more than 24 hours to complete so mining can proceed without delay. Limits set for the chosen parameters must be reasonable and defensible. To achieve these objectives over one thousand samples were collected at the Zortman and Landusky minesites and clas­sified by rock type, total sulfur content, paste pH, and net neu­tralizing potential (NNP). In addition, over 22 humidity cell kinetic tests were conducted to help corroborate static results for waste rock. Another 8 humidity cells were configured in series to test waste rock blending and waste rock/limestone capping alternatives as mitigation for acid rock drainage. Leachates were analyzed for pH, conductivity, alkalinity, acidity, sulfate, Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Mg, and Cr in some cases. Petrographic analysis, as well as total sulfur content, paste pH, and static and kinetic test results identified three geochem­ically different waste rock groups: 1) Archean amphibolite gneiss and Paleozoic carbonates and shales, 2) Tertiary syenite porphyry, and 3) other less abundant Tertiary igneous and Archean metamorphic rocks.

Efficient filtration of fine kaolin particles plays a crucial role in the processing of raw kaolin to a marketable product. Filtration can often be the rate-controlling step of the whole process. Consequently, plant production depends on the rates being achieved in filtration. To alleviate the bottleneck in production, Nalco Chemical Co. initiated a reagent development program to chemically enhance the performance of the filtration units. Filter aids of different classes were assembled and evaluated in bench simulations. These included reagents whose primary mode of functionality were coagulation, flocculation, thickening and combinations of each. This article discusses the development and application of a new reagent that improves the filter production rate with minimal impact on filter cake percent solids. Plant data indicate that this reagent can increase production rates by as much as 35% on clays of varying particle size, as well as clays that are calcined. The reagent's impact on solids content, re-slurrying characteristics, Brookfield and Hercules viscosity and drying is within the standards set by plants that evaluated and now use this product.

Now that the former Soviet Union has divided into 15 countries, it is necessary to analyze separately the industrial mineral position of each of these countries. Industrial mineral data The former USSR was one of the world's largest producers of industrial minerals and had some of the world's largest reserves. Production and reserve figures, however, must be qualified. Even when these figures were reported by the Soviets, it was not clear that the production figures were for products that would be equally marketable in a competitive market economy. The reserve figures are based on the Soviet system of reserve classification, which is not directly equatable with the US Geological Survey and US Bureau of Mines classifications of economic reserves in market economy countries. The Soviets reserve classification system, in terms of which reserve figures will be given, is based on the reliability of the quantity of the material in place. The Soviet system assigns each occurrence to one of seven categories A, B, C1 and C2 are considered reserves; P1, P2, and P3 are considered resources. Mining in the former Soviet Union was authorized on the basis of the reserves in place in categories A, B and C, which had to be in prescribed ratios. However, the categories A, B and C do not necessarily correspond to Western concepts of material economically exploitable under present market prices with existing technologies.

The Stillwater Mining Co. of Nye, MT, is operating a platinum-palladium mine that requires an extensive system of footwall laterals to facilitate mine production. The 10-year mine plan calls for more than 48,300 lineal m (160,000 lineal ft) of footwall lateral. A rapid tunneling and raising system is necessary to sustain mine production schedules and achieve production goals. This article describes the results of using a Robbins 4.1-m-diam (l3.5ft-diam) tunnel boring machine (TBM) to develop the footwall laterals and a Robbins RBM-6SP raise boring machine to develop raises at the mine. The Stillwater Mining Co is a partnership between Chevron Resources Co. and Manville Corp. Chevron Resources is the managing partner. When the mine began production in September 1986, the owners were primarily concerned with the actual production of platinum and palladium, the grade minable and the amount that could be mined. As mine development and mine production proved feasible, the owners considered higher production levels. The Stillwater Mine is developed by a system of adits (known as footwall laterals) that are driven parallel to the ore bearing zone. This led mine officials to consider using a mechanical boring machine in the primary mine development. Previously, tunnel boring machines have not been used successfully in mining applications. Therefore, the owners decided to purchase a used machine to reduce the potential risk.

As a general rule for gold treatment the presence of reasonable amounts of 'coarse' free gold will dictate the use of a gravity circuit. The actual particle size of gold that constitutes the por­tion of' coarse' free gold can vary widely. The larger its size the more troublesome it is, mainly because of the tendency for this gold to quickly settle out from slurries in regions of relatively low velocities. There are a multitude of places where 'coarse' gold can find a resting place, namely, in chutes, between and behind lines, in pump hoppers and in pumps themselves. Fortunately, the problems associated with recovering very 'coarse' free gold, say greater than Imm, is rare on most gold mines that have grinding and cyanide leaching circuits. For these operations it is common practice to have a gravity circuit situated within the milling circuit to recover 'coarse' free gold. Should the 'coarse' free gold constitute 15% to 20% of the total gold in a deposit then its recovery by gravity separation is seri­ously considered. As a gold mine 'matures' the availability of soft oxide ore decreases and the likelihood that harder ore having sulphide gold association increases. To maintain gold production rates in this situation either the gold grade of the treated ore must increase or more ore needs to be treated. In the latter case this is achieved by installing more grinding capacity, an expensive option, or coarsing the grind, with the downside of loss in gold recovery. In general the less expensive capital options is fol­lowed. There is, however, some upside to improve recovery when reasonable quantities of sulphide containing gold are pre­sented that can be recovered by flotation or gravity separation. Concentrates produced from these unit operations can be finely ground and reintroduced to the cyanide leach circuit to improve gold recovery. This scenario is a much less costly option than one where all the ore is ground finer. In this paper the experiences of recovering gravity gold from the Telfer Gold Mine, and gold associated pyrite from the New Celebration Mine will be discussed.

Traditionally, when one considers the optimization of a flotation circuit, the scope of work focuses on a review of unit process equipment. This usually includes topics such as grinding ball typed, grind size, classifier efficiency, mill liner design, chemical reagent addition rates, alternative chemical reagents, on-line process analysis, and automated control strategy. However, since very few companies can afford the capital expenditure needed to completely automate the processes, the flotation operator remains as a critical link in optimization of the circuit. Therefore, upgrading of operator skills and knowledge through training must be considered as equally as important as unit process review. This paper will review some concepts and approaches to innovative operator training. INTRODUCTION Consider for a moment the fantastic changes that have occurred in process automation at many flotation plants during the last several years. Flowmeters, density gages, and on-stream analyzers now routinely measure process conditions and effect control strategy. These functions had until recently been entrusted to human flotation operators. Now with a little stretching of the imagination it is possible to envision a plant where very little human intervention would be required. However, when one begins to calculate the capital cost required to fully install automatic equipment, it quickly becomes apparent that many parts of flotation plants will continue to require skilled, knowledgeable operators to ensure successful operation. Additionally as these automatic systems are put into place, the operator's duties become increasingly complex. Therefore no flotation plant can be considered optimized without upgrading each operator's skill and knowledge to match the technology utilized. BACKGROUND At Henderson, one of the hardest steps towards the optimization of operators was to realize that present level of operator skill and knowledge was not sufficient. Since Henderson had a track record of producing the highest quality molybdenum concentrate in the world, it was difficult to accept the idea that change was needed, or even possible. This realization came about as Henderson began a program to modernize the cleaner plant circuit. Henderson utilizes a complex cleaner flotation circuit involving multiple stages of flotation, with a counter- current routing of flotation tailings. Since start-up in 1976 Henderson had relied upon next-day laboratory analysis techniques, that provided an after the fact measurement of process. Hour to hour process control was implemented by the operator, the basis for the operators' control decisions was primarily the individual operator's experience and "feel'. Bench marking of current flotation technology indicated that on-stream analysis was a proven state-of-the-art method for improving process control. An Outokumpu Courier 30 analyzer was purchased and installed to provide real-time analysis of critical cleaner plant flows. The analyzer quickly began to provide valuable assay information, allowing the metallurgists to develop specific target values for important flotation variables. However due to the complexity of the circuit, the analyzer information showed that a problem was usually caused when several targeted parameters went out of range simultaneously. This made it difficult for the operator to determine just where to implement the proper corrective action. It became apparent that to take full advantage of the new analyzer information each operator would have to become proficient at understanding the material balance of the entire circuit. TRAINING PLAN CONCEPTS With the goal of giving each operator a working knowledge of a circuit material balance the following concepts were applied to develop a training plan: - Most operators were high school graduates, but had fairly weak mathematical skills, and had very little experience at metallurgical calculations. - The training would have to address a wide range of topics from basic fundamentals to complex material balance. The basic sequence decided upon, was to present a fundamental topic to the entire group, break into small groups to work a “hands on'”case study example of that topic, and design the case study results so that they could be combined to highlight a major portion of the material balance concept.

Since 1978, the Colorado Department of Health has become involved in specific investigations of possible radiation hazards among nonminers in Colorado communities. In each instance, the improper disposal of mill tailings has precipitated concerns and allegations of radiation hazards. This presentation is a brief summary of the findings, to date, of 4 such investigations involving tailings disposal problems in Canon City, Denver, Durango and Grand Junction, Colorado. Canon City In the summer of 1979, allegations of excessive cancer incidence were made at public hearings concerning an application for a Radioactive Materials License submitted to the Colorado Department of Health by the Cotter Corporation for a uranium mill at Canon City. Canon City is the site of a uranium mill operated since 1958 by Commonwealth Edison. Local residents accumulated figures and calculated rates suggesting a 2-fold excess in total cancer mortality. These rates were not adjusted or standardized for demographic varibles. A review of cancer mortality data and computation of age standardized rates for years 1950 through 1977 showed that Canon City's cancer mortality rates were within expected limits, actually lower than rates for the State of Colorado or the United States. The first slide shows rates for every fifth year, 1950 through 1975. Further, an analysis of Canon City cancer incidence data from the Colorado Central Cancer Registry revealed that 1979 incidence rates were not significantly different from Colorado rates, with the exception of prostate cancer. The next slide shows age standardized incidence rates for lung, colon, breast and prostate cancer. Data were also reviewed for leukemia, myeloma, lymphoma and cancers of the thyroid stomach, uterine certix, ovary, kidney, bladder-and brain, however, small numbers of cases prevented meaningful rate calculation. 1980 data are presently being analyzed. None of the data yet examined support allegations of radiation-associated cancer in Canon City. Denver In February of 1979, the Department of Health became aware of a number of radium mill tailing deposits in the Denver metropolitan area, remnants of the radium milling industry of the early 1900's. Several of the deposits were situated so as to possibly contribute significantly to radiation exposure of a small number of people over a period of several decades. The Department developed protocols for radiation surveys, dosage estimates and, for a small number of persons, body burdens determinations and peripheral blood lymphocyte cytogenetic studies. The results of this investigation suggested no measurable biomedical impact as a result of the radium deposits. Durango In October of 1979, a physician residing in Durango, Colorado released information from a preliminary analysis of lung cancer data suggesting an incidence rate several times expected in that city. The data were presented at a meeting of a citizen's group concerned about the possible health hazards of 2 uranium mill tailing deposits located in the south end of the city. Since cancer incidence data generally do not exist in most of western Colorado, a team of epidemiologists was dispatched to Durango to work with local physicians and hospitals in conducting an epidemiologic study of selected cancers for the period 1969 through 1978. After case-finding and record abstracting were completed, it was determined that sufficient data were available for study of only 3 sites: lung cancer, breast cancer and leukemia. The next slide shows age standardized incidence rates for these 3 sites for 1969-1978 for Durango and the State of Colorado. There are no significant differences in these rates. The data did show a geographic peculiarity with regards to the relative proportion of tumor types near the tailings deposits as opposed to away from the deposits, however, this finding is based upon very small numbers of cases and may represent only the random excursion of rates based upon small observations. This investigation suggests that if a carcinogenic hazard is present, it is too small to be detected by the study method employed. Grand Junction The Department of Health has been involved in the Grand Junction mill tailings problem for several years. In 1966, the Department issued an order terminating the practice of free public access to a 55-acre pile of uranium mill tailings. Prior to this order, an estimated 300,000 tons of material was removed. Of this amount, an estimated 50,000 tons was presumably used in residential and commercial construction. Despite many allegations of cancer and birth defects excesses in Grant Junction since the mid 1960s, the first epidemiologic study of cancer was conducted in the spring of 1977. Data from the Colorado Central Cancer Registry were analyzed and reported to the Executive Director of the Department of Health in June of that year. The findings of the first and preliminary study were an unexplained excess of acute leukemia and chronic myelocytic leukemia. The excess was based upon small numbers but was present across all age groups. No increase in chronic lymphocytic leukemia was evident.

INTRODUCTION The development of nuclear industry in Taiwan requires an increasing supply of uranium. Uranium recovery from phosphate ores, becomes an important item of the R & D programs. Many countries have already started such a program. USA has set up an industrial-scale production plant; South Africa, Israel, Morocco and other countries have also engaged in the development of extraction technology of uranium from phosphate ores and started setting up the production plant. In Taiwan, a feasibility study of establishing the production plant was started in 1977. A pilot plant was completed, tested, and operated in 1979. The main source material. - phosphate ores is obtained from China Phosphate Company. The annual yield of the pilot plant has been planned to be one ton of ammonium diuranate (ADU). The Health Physics Division of Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (INER), Atomic Energy Council of Republic of China (ROC AEC), is responsible for the radiation safety control of the plant. The purpose of the radiation safety control is to collect radiation safety information of the plant of this type, to evaluate possible radiation hazards to the personnel, and to analyze the radiation safety of the immediate environment adjacent to the plant. Furthermore, the information and experience obtained are used as the basis for applying radiation safety control to the production plant. The main emphases of the radiation safety control are therefore the arrangement of radiation safety control areas and the collection and evaluation of the health physics data. This report includes the past one and half years' experiences of the radiation safety control of the pilot plant, the planning of the production plant with an annual yield of 10 ton ADU, and considerations given in improving the radiation safety control of the production plant. PILOT PLANT AND ITS OPERATION PROCESS The pilot plant occupies an area of 350 m2 and is a two-story rectangular building. Exits are provided by a front and a rear door. An additional small door at the central right side of the building is connected to the maintenance area located outside the main building. The interior of the building is divided into interconnected offices, laboratories and process area (Figs. 1 and 2). A stairway to the process area of the second floor is located in the central part of the first floor. The second floor offices are accessible by the additional front and rear stairways. The main process area of the first floor is furnished with plastic floor, and the second floor with poriferous iron-grid floor. The building is not furnished with centralized air-conditioning system. Individual air conditioners are, however, available to some laboratories. Because the back door of the building is frequently open, the product storage room is provided with a blower to maintain good ventilation. Natural uranium contents of phosphoric acid solution vary in the range from 0.07 to 0.11 kg/m3. The process consists mainly of the uranium concentration cycle and the purification cycle. A flow diagram of the process is shown in Fig. 3. CONSIDERATIONS GIVEN FOR RADIATION SAFETY CONTROL AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF RADIATION CONTROLLED AREAS The radiation safety control of the pilot plant is carried out on the basis of the considerations listed below:1,2 1) Since the wet process is adopted, and the flow of the radioactive material is confined to closed pipes and containers, air contamination is therefore not too much of concern. 2) The concentrations of radioactive material of the whole process are mostly less than 10 ppm. An exception is the final ADU product after precipitation and centrifugal separation, which contains up to 50% natural uranium. Organized by Women in Mining USA (WIM USA), whose mission is to foster equity, sustainability and leadership in mining, the event featured an extensive agenda including workshops, keynote speeches, panel discussions and networking opportunities. Attendees ranged from industry veterans to emerging professionals and students, united by a shared commitment to progress within one of the world’s most essential and traditionally maledominated sectors.

According to statistics compiled by the National Safety Council, US Bureau of Mines, American Medical Association, and other agencies, accidental injuries cause more deaths than all the leading diseases. No one is immune to an accident. Probably the best way to describe an accident is to say that it is an unexpected happening. The automobile driver is not expecting a terrifying crash, the electrician does not expect to be electrocuted, nor is the coal miner expecting the roof to fall on him. All personal injuries will not result in death. There is a multitude of victims who are living proof of what accidents can mean to an individual-victims who are blind, paralytic, missing arms, legs, etc. In most instances the earning power of these individuals is gone, and they are utterly dependent upon family or welfare. For many years there seemed to be an attitude that prevailed in industrial America that accidents were inevitable, and that so many fatalities and injuries should be expected. This, of course, was utter nonsense. Since the birth of such organizations as The National Safety Council, American Society of Safety Engineers, and. the US Bureau of Mines, much progress has been made in reducing accidents. The enactment of compensation laws greatly contributed to the progress that has been made. Does this mean that all accidents can be prevented? Unfortunately, it does not. Human psychology indicates that men will work unsafely or perform unsafe acts for the following reasons : 1) Lack of knowledge or skill. 2) Conflicting motivations, such as: (a) to be more comfortable, (b) to save time or effort, (c) to be accepted by a group. 3) Physical or mental condition. Nearly everyone desires his own safety, but not all individuals are willing to do what they know to do to insure their own safety.

THE ROLE OF MANAGEMENT IN PLANT SAFETY Safe Production In plant management, safe production is an ideal. It becomes reality when: 1. Plant employees work in healthful and safe conditions. 2. Plant safety is in harmony with productivity. 3. Worker absenteeism and turnover are low-the work force is stable. Plant management must apply its talents, skills, and resources to build and maintain the foundations of safe production on a system of policies, procedures, and attitudes. It must do so by marshaling all managerial functions - staffing, direction, control, innovation, and representation-toward that goal. Ideally, a plant safety program is proactive. Management should plan and implement safety activities that are aimed at prevention. Past accidents-accomplished facts-should not be the sole guide of future actions. In other words, positive preventive measures, not the fewness of accidents are the criteria for safety production. An ideal safety program is one which is cost effective. Management should view plant safety as part of a broader program-loss control. Loss control includes prevention of fires and other accidents, unhealthful conditions, and occurrences that cause bodily injury, illness, property loss, or damage. Management evaluates the employees' productivity and safety. An effective training program aimed at loss control is the hallmark of safe production. Ideally, both labor and management should be well versed in safety. They believe in the premise that work-related injury and illness, as well as property loss and damage from fire and other accidents, are manageable and preventable. Such belief prompts them to learn more about the work process and potential hazards associated with each job. They also learn how to expect and prevent fues and other accidents, and respond to emergencies at the plant. One of the principal responsibilities of the California State Geologist is to provide local governments with maps and information regarding mineral resource occurrences within their jurisdiction. The primary objective of this effort is to furnish basic data that is essential in planning for and accommodating wise development of mineral deposits that are important to the economic well-being of the region, state, and nation. Local government agencies are required by law to incorporate the information provided by the State Geologist into their general plans and formulate mineral resource management policies that emphasize conservation and development of mineral deposits. The Mineral Land Classification program was initiated by the State Geologist in 1977 under authority of the California Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA). To date, about 33,000 square miles of land have been classified for mineral resource potential. Most of the mineral land mapping has been conducted in three principal areas: (1) metropolitan areas of the state where urban encroachment has greatly diminished available supplies of construction aggregate; (2) Sierra Nevada foothills, a region that is undergoing dramatic population increases; and (3) the Mojave Desert and Great Basin regions, where large Federal land withdrawals are pending that could preclude mining. Mineral land classification studies address the overall mineral potential of a region through the identification of local and regional geologic factors that control or influence the formation of mineral deposits. These studies are field-intensive surveys that enable project geologists to gain first-hand knowledge about the nature and distribution of mineral deposits in a given area and portray that information accurately in map form. This paper summarizes the progress made in the Mineral Land Classification program in the metropolitan, Sierra Nevada foothills, and the Mojave Desert/Great Basin regions of California. Selected projects from each area are discussed in detail.

Disposal of solid and liquid wastes from mining and milling operations has become a focus of attention in recent years. Consequently, the geotechnical engineer is more frequently associated with design of disposal facilities. Jack Wulff, a representative of one consulting firm with experience in this field, talks with ME about the geotechnical engineer's contribution. Mr. Wulff, mine and mill waste disposal today is receiving more attention-and many more dollars-than in the past. Regulatory agencies have promulgated demanding requirements concerning mill waste (especially uranium mill waste) and specialist consultants are frequently being called in to design disposal systems. What can the experienced geotechnical engineer add to the development of waste disposal facilities? It's true that geotechnical engineers have recently become more visible in the minerals sector, but we've been around mining for a long time-as foundation engineers for mills and mine support buildings, and for geotechnical aspects of open pits, pipelines, railroads, roads, and so forth. We've also designed water supply dams, which could be considered recursors of tailings dams and other forms of disposal systems. Let me show by example what geotechnical engineering can contribute to waste disposal facility design. I recently was asked to look at several small wastewater impoundments which had failed. The design of the earth embankments appeared, at first glance, to be rather conservative. They were only about 3.4 m high, the slopes were 3 to 1 (horizontal to vertical), with about 24 m of bottom contact with the earth foundation. But there had been three episodes of dike failure in a few months, all upon initial filling. The problem was the nature of some material in the foundation that was also used as structural fill-a dispersive clay that readily deflocculated and eroded on contact with water, especially with seeping or flowing water. The design did not include the defensive measures required to use such materials confidently in water retention structures. Apparently, the designer did not recognize the potential problem posed by the unusual soil characteristics. That's the sort of engineering information fundamental to geotechnical engineering, but not necessarily a part of the civil, structural, or mining engineer's professional training or experience. This difference in expertise is not simply a matter of factual knowledge-it also affects the design process. The structural engineer can design a structure to fit the client's functional needs and can specify the materials (grade of steel, PVC, concrete, etc.) to meet the demands of the design. The geotechnical engineer's design process is somewhat different, since we work with natural materials, not man-made materials produced according to specification. We first have to establish what kinds of materials are available (usually directly from the chosen site, since importation of materials becomes expensive). Then we determine the engineering properties and characteristics and, finally, design the structure to fulfill the client's requirements within parameters dictated by available materials. In brief, the geotechnical engineer works with naturally-evolved, not man-made, materials and uses design techniques developed to accommodate that fact. Because no two sites are exactly alike in configuration, structural (geologic) characteristics, or available materials, there will be unique design and judgmental questions to be resolved on virtually every project. You said that water retention dams could be considered the precursors of tailings dams-you probably had a specific technical relationship in mind. There's a very strong carryover of methodology from earth dam design, where the technology developed and where it has become very refined. Coal waste materials inhibit the direct establishment of vegetation due to adverse physical and chemical properties, particularly low water retention and high potential acidity. The Moss #1 coal refuse pile is located in Dickenson County, Virginia, and was idled in the late 1980s with little topsoil resources available for final closure. The refuse was acidic (Total S = 0.38%; pH = 3.6), black in color and high (70%) in coarse fragments. The refuse also had a low water-holding capacity (4.5% in < 2.0-mm fraction). A small plot experiment was established on the refuse pile to evaluate the effects of liming rates (50% and 100% of lime requirements) and topsoil thickness (15, 30 and 60 cm) on vegetative growth and leachate quality. Liming and topsoil amendment increased the surface soil pH from <4.0 to >6.0 over a two-year period, which resulted in greater vegetative cover and biomass than the control plots. All topsoil treatments resulted in greater vegetative cover and biomass than plots treated with lime only. This was due to improved surface soil physical and chemical properties. A topsoil treatment of 60 cm gave the thickest vegetative cover and biomass yield. Such a treatment, however, would be cost-prohibitive at this location. Applica¬tion of 27Mg ha`1 of lime to the refuse surface along with 15 cm of topsoil produced acceptable two-year vegetative cover and biomass, and this appeared to be the optimal treatment for this particular situation. Both liming and topsoil had no affect on leachate pH and the electrical conductivity of leachates collected below the plots. This suggests that surface revegetation will have little effect on the quality of water draining through the pile. Therefore, long-term water-treatment requirements may not be reduced by successfully revegetating the pile surface.

Introduction A problem that has faced mining engineers and mining geologists for many years is how to best explore a particular prospect so that the basic decision as to whether the material present is ore or only high-grade rock can be made with some confidence. It is obvious that one could not begin a large scale mining program on the basis of tests made on a few hand samples. On the other hand, one could not be 100 percent certain as to the average grade or tonnage before beginning development, as this would require the orebody to be mined out in the sampling process. The basic objectives of the exploration program can be stated as (1) to reduce mining risk; (2) to lessen the cost of development; and (3) to increase the profits of mining. The exploration program should be terminated when these objectives are no longer being met. The construction of tunnels is a specific mining operation. In the exploration program one should gather the data needed to determine (1) the type of excavation technique(s) to be used; and (2) the rate of advance that might be expected. As in the evaluation of an orebody, with the data collected it should be possible to estimate mining costs and project life. Unfortunately, at the present time, it is not possible to do this at least when dealing with medium to hard rock types. The reason for this, it is felt, is basically the inability to identify what specific rock mass properties are of use in tunnel design and to specify how these may be obtained in an exploration program. INTRODUCTION Early rock-bolting practice usually consisted of ran¬domly installing bolts, using hand-held drilling equip¬ment such as air-leg mounted sinkers or stopers. As bolting technology evolved, the practice of installing uniform bolt patterns was developed, utilizing random bolt installation as required within the uniform pattern. The uniform rock-bolting technique, when used as the principal method of rock support, requires drills and jumbos designed specifically for rock bolting. This equipment is similar to conventional face drilling machines, except that the jumbos can orient the drills to obtain any necessary bolting angle; often, this means bolts may be installed at or near perpendicular to the centerline of the drift or stope opening. Fig. I shows a typical rubber-tired rock-bolting jumbo of the type commonly used in drifts and room-and-pillar mining. Modern rock-bolting jumbos are capable of drilling the required holes, inserting rockbolts, and torquing them to proper levels. Jumbos also are available for use with resin-anchored bolts. Probably the most unusual of this type utilizes a rotating bolt turret that carries the rock drill, resin charging unit, and the bolt in a single mechanism. Once the turret is loaded with the resin and bolt, further manual effort is not re¬quired. Drilling and bolt placement are accomplished by the operator from a station remote from the bolt site. Fig. 2 shows this turret device. Roof-bolting jumbos are available mounted on rail, crawler, or rubber-tired chassis. Various types of rock drills are used. Depending upon the type of rock, these may include rotary, percussion, or rotary-percussion drills. Fig. 3 shows a typical rail-mounted jumbo. Currently, a 4.3 km long drift is being developed on the 3440 level in the Lower Kalamazoo project at the San Manuel Mine, Magma Copper Company, AZ. The drift, located at 1050 m below surface, is being constructed using a 4.6 m diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM). The drift is ventilated by a forcing type auxiliary ventilation system. At the face, to mitigate the impact on the work environment of the TBM, the system is equipped with dust extraction and refrigeration systems. Recently, to evaluate the ventilation conditions in the drift, a continuous monitoring system has been installed. The system can be used to measure the air velocity, barometric pressure, relative humidity and air and rock temperatures. This study describes the capabilities and limitations of this system, and presents a summary of the results.

The paper describes the design and operation of a Shaft Boring Machine (SBM). The machine has been developed by The Robbins Company. It is anticipated that the prototype, which will bore shafts in the 6.1 to 7.3 m (20 to 24 ft) size range, will be placed in operation during 1985. This pioneering application of rapid excavation technology is expected to lead to significant improvements in the cost and speed of shaft construction. The technical and economic factors which have limited the employment of Shaft Drilling and which caused unsatisfactory results with earlier attempts at Shaft Boring are reviewed. The design criteria adapted to overcome these problems are discussed. Cost and performance estimates are presented and are compared to conventional sinking methods. Factors that influence the application of the SBM to specific projects are reviewed.
