Pachuca tanks are used widely in the mineral industry for leaching and mixing operations. An analysis has been presented previously to predict circulation of homogenous slurry in Pachuca tanks with full height draft tubes. However, settling of solids causes deviation from the homogenous case. Circulation of settling slurry in a Pachuca tank is modeled and shown to be a function of settling velocity, solids fraction, solid and liquid density, air flew rate, and tank dimensions. The pressure balance is shown to be very sensitive to these parameters, especially at low slurry velocities. Equations for predicting the air requirements in Pachuca tanks containing settling solids are presented.

Limestone for portland cement must be beneficiated to produce uniform raw material for the kiln. Careful quarrying and selective recovery are factors in this process, but the chief aspects of beneficiation are "in plant" processes, such as crushing and screening, washing, grinding, flotation, and heavy-media separation. Numerous technical and economic problems exist. Detailed studies of the limestone deposit and the stone itself are required for intelligent beneficiation. As used in this paper, beneficiation is defined as the improving of limestone composition so as to produce an economically usable raw material A limestone deposit is defined as a mass of limestone which can be recovered, by quarrying or mining, for sale or for use in a commercially profitable operation. The stone may require elaborate processing, or it may qualify with little or none. Obviously, the "commercially profitable" qualification may change as the economy changes. Potentially commercial deposits may be of much better quality than actually developed deposits, and yet may be denied development for various economic reasons.

Column experiments were performed to determine the ability of Madison aquifer material to adsorb arsenic and other constituents in a heavily mined watershed of the Black Hills in western South Dakota. The Madison aquifer is a karstic dolomite and limestone reservoir that is exposed on the flanks of the Black Hills. Streams that cross the Madison in the eastern Black Hills typically lose all their flow to the aquifer at sinkholes. In this work, Madison aquifer material was obtained for loading of six-inch diameter columns, which were backfilled with Madison aquifer water. Stream water then was allowed to displace the aquifer water during column testing in order to simulate mixing of the two waters at sinkholes and to determined adsorption of arsenic and other dissolved constituents. Initial results show that some adsorption of arsenic occurred when compared to more conservative tracers such as nitrate.

The algorithms for the mathematical modeling to predict productivity of underground room-and-pillar mining systems are well known and documented. These algorithms consider the time-varying relationships between mining equipment for a given geometty of operations as well as other constraints. This paper presents WebConSim, a newly developed, Web-based, user-friendly computer simulation tool for the Windows environment. The simulator is easily customized for use by field engineers, planning engineers and management and will help mine operators plan the optimum mining sequence for different mine geometrie and equipment layouts. Program output includes production data and equipment utilization indices, as well as time driven event chains that can be used for virtual reality presentations.

This article examines some important trends in East-West trade in non-fuel mineral products, in particular the recent decline in Eastern bloc exports of such products. It relates this decline to an improvement in Soviet terms of trade; a deterioration of geological and locational conditions in Soviet mineral production; an increased integration of the CMEA-countries based on a regional pooling of resources; and a surge in demand for mineral commodities in Eastern countries coupled with a slowdown in Western economic growth. Finally, it evaluates to what extent these determinants may evolve in a different direction during the eighties and thus foster East-West mineral trade. Eastern1 bloc trade in mineral products is a subject of perennial interest in the West. When exports increase, there is much talk of the dangers of dependence on the East for critical fuels and materials. When imports increase, talk turns to the danger of Soviet dependence on Western supplies. A common fear is that the USSR may not only seek to meet its own resource needs but also deny the access of Western countries to these resources. This paper, like three other recent additions to the lite5ature on Soviet foreign trade of commodities2, tries to put matters in clearer and cooler perspective. The first section evaluates the structure of East-West mineral trade and tries to identify some important trends of recent years. The second section relies on supply and demand factors, as well on the Comecon connection (the intra-Council for Mutual Economic Assistance mineral cooperation) to explain why there has been a reversal in the mineral trade trend since the end of the seventies. The last section evaluates the factors which could stimulate East-West mineral trade in the future.

INTRODUCTION The early record of tunnel excavating machines in hard rock tunneling has not been one to particularly brag about. We have all heard the stories of major difficulties when trying to break hard rock with machines at promised advance rates of several times that of conventional drill and blast. Unfortunately, sometimes this has not happened. It has been through this trial of the past generations disappointments that today's TBM's have evolved to their present high level of performance in a wide range of ground conditions. Today's machines offer much increased reliability and durability. This translates into high availability to the tunnel contractor. Although there still are occasional disappointments being reported, the state of the art is that reliable and predictable machine excavation of rock now is both a reality and well founded expectation. The most recent editions of Atlas Copco's MINI/MIDI Fullfacer, we feel, make a strong contribution to the reliable performance of todays TBM's---especially in small-size rock tunnels. This report will, 1.) explain the equipment and effect of rock both on the cutting technique and machine performance; 2.) list advantages of the non-circular shape, during and after construction; 3.) list applications in civil and mining industries; 4.) discuss North American experiences, performance and costs; 5.) list advantages over drill and blast and; 6.) discuss briefly lease arrangements.

The processors of Florida phosphate rock face constraints similar to those of other mineral operations--leaner ore, more complex treatment schemes and a product which sells for a penny a pound. IMC Fertilizer is a dominant producer in this market with its current operation of five processing plants. An emphasis by their management in maintaining and improving plant performance has continued unabated for some 15 years. This has resulted in a commitment to the importance of routine automatic sampling of product and in process streams, the generation of reliable assay and size distribution data, the accurate measurement of process flows, and the computerized "rendering" of this information into weekly and monthly material balances which provide consistent measures of process performance. In addition, there has been a parallel program to monitor and improve the performance of flotation reagents and to evaluate process modifications or changes in equipment. This paper will describe the evaluation techniques that have evolved over this period and indicate how the historical data base is used to identify plant problems early and help in their solution.

This paper describes a procedure for minimizing the operational costs associated with blending sodium in coal at a surface mine in the Powder River Basin. Mine site blending is performed by adjusting daily production rates for high- and low-sodium pits. These adjustments are designed to produce a consistent sodium value called the blending target. The mine's contractual limit for sodium is sufficiently close to the field average value that any decrease in the sodium blending target may result in an opportunity cost, if the number of potentially minable tons is reduced. Conversely, any increase in the blending target may result in a higher sampling cost if more information is required to keep the blend within contractual limits. Blending parameters were defined using a geostatistical block model of sodium content that was based on analyses of hundreds of in-pit sample holes. Variograms for these data were used to compute the marginal costs of opportunity and sampling for a series of hypothetical in-pit drilling patterns. These marginal costs provided a basis for selecting optimum values for key parameters such as the blending target, production variance and in-pit sampling density. The benefit of implementing these optimized parameter values is that operational costs of sodium blending will be minimized over the long-term. At the mine where this procedure was developed, each dollar spent to increase the sampling density to the optimum value was shown to generate a $10 savings in opportunity cost.

Pyrometallurgical process are usually used to recover valuable metals from metal sulphide concentrates. However, their use is diminishing as the cost of energy rises and pollution controls become strictes. An alternative method of treatment sulphides could be bacterial leaching due its simplicity and negligible contamination (1-2). This process is presently used commercially to re cover metals such as Cu and U from low grade ore concentrates. In spite of numerous researchs during recent years (3-5) there exists very little kinetic data concerning the speed of bioleaching process. The kinetic analysis of bacterial activity is related with the metabolism and growth of microox ganisms . This fundamental information permits ma- king the best utilization of bacterial oxidation and to suggest techniques which might increase the production of the products desired. However, bio- kinetic models are especially complicated due to the existence of many metabolic routes and parallel reactions which are important for the life of the bacteria. Microbiological oxidation of a mineral substrate is influenced by its own inicial concentration: This influence can be determined by means of a kinetic study. In a medium with sufficient concentration of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) and an adequate supply of 0, and CO2, as the only & L source of carbon for the biochemical synthesis, the substrate concentration would remain the only limitation in the rate of leaching. In this case the Michaelis-Menten model could be applied (6). The model is based on an association of the enzyme (El with the substrate (S) with consequent decomposition of the latter into enzyme and products [ ] The rate of dissolution is defined by the equation : [ ] Were V is the rate of metal extraction (mg 1-1 1 h-1 ) ; S is the pulp density Mn is the maximum rate for metal extraction (mg 1-1 h-1) and K is the constant of Michaelis (concentration of substrate that yields Vm/2). This method is applicable only when the rate of bacterial growth is similar to the rate of metal extraction. It would therefore be sufficient to control the concentration of metal in the medium over the period of time. In the present work a systematic study of the kinetics of ZnS and CuFeS bioleaching in sphalerite and complex ore concengrates was carried out. The rate of dissolution of the Zn and Cu as function of the pulp density and temperature was determined. However, most oxidations of sulphide dissolution take place with a very slow kinetic; but, this can be accelerated considerably by the addition to the solution of suitable catalytic ions, as was Suggested many years ago by Bjorling (7). Such ions can exercise an important influence on the rate of the oxidation-reduction reactions, both homogenous and heterogenous, which take place during the leaching of sulphides; they also affect the nature of the reaction products. The action of catalytic ions has been fully developed in aqueous systems, but in the absence of bacteria (8 - 11) although the actual machanisms is not totally known. The mechanisms proposed as hypotheses in the literature (8) indicate that, in the case of ZnS, the catalyst ion act through an electrochemical mechanism according to the reactions: [ ]

This investigation mainly focused on designing a bunker system for a large underground coal mine. The primary purpose of this bunker system was to keep high- and low-sulfur coal segregated on the underground belt system. These bunkers were also required for protecting the mine faces from out by belt delays. Methodologies used in developing this plan are briefly discussed. The final design and the procedures formulated for implementing it are also presented.

Metal ions associated with effluent streams pose an increasing environmental problem for the mineral industry. Various techniques currently in use to combat this problem including bioremediation, chemical precipitation, and ion exchange are reviewed, and their relative advantages and disadvantages discussed. An alternative technique for metal ion removal, adsorption on surface modified alumina substrates is presented. Alumina surfaces were modified by adsorption of organofunctional silanes, and metal ion removal occurs by chelation of the ion by the adsorbed silane molecules. Experimental data is presented for the removal of cupric ions by this method and is compared to cupric ion removal by adsorption on alumina without prior surface modification.

Since 1990, the entire Romanian mining industry has suffered a major restructuring, i.e. technical and economic. The large majority of the remaining active mines are these with a chance for economic comeback. This is also the case for the mines that belong to MINVEST Deva Company; most of the mines are closed, and are waiting to be reclaimed. The authors present the closing procedures of the former copper mining perimeters managed by MINVEST. It is well known that pollutants of concern for the environment must be monitored to obtain reliable information on the quality of ambient conditions and to minimize their impact on the environment. Consequently, the monitoring problems during the closing procedures will be presented.

In 1965 Helmut Lerchs and lngo Grossmann presented to the mining community an algorithm to find the optimum design for an open pit mine. In their words, "the objective is to design the contour of a pit so as to maximize the difference between total mine value of the ore extracted and the total extraction cost of of ore and waste." They modeled the problem in graph theoretic terms and showed that an optimal solution of the ultimate pit problem is equivalent to finding the maximum closure of their graph based model. In this paper. we explain how a dual simplex algorithm can be used to solve the same problem. We show how this algorithm is closely related to Lerchs and Grossmann's and how the steps in their algorithm can be viewed in mathematical programming terms. This analysis adds insight to the algorithm of Lerchs and Grossmann and shows how it can be simplified.

The 1972 discovery of the Howards Pass lead-zinc deposit was the product of systematic regional geochemical surveys used to evaluate conceptual geological models for the metal-rich black shales of the Selwyn Basin. Motivation of personnel involved in all aspects of work was as critical a factor to the success as the existing corporate attitudes and infrastructure. Exploration programs were flexible but maintained a focus only on targets of sufficient economic potential to support operations in remote locations. Direct costs for the programs that lead to the discovery were in the order of $500,000 (Canadian 1972). Geological reserves today stand at over 500 Mt (511 million st) of 7% combined lead-zinc, containing a higher grade zone of nearly 10 Mt (11 million st) of 16% combined lead-zinc.

INTRODUCTION In any large earth-moving operation, good planning and management are necessary to complete the operational tasks promptly and successfully. When an earth moving operation is complicated by radioactive contaminants, normal earth moving techniques and procedures must be modified. Any planning and management, therefore, must include the radiological aspects of the operation. It was found that the radiological aspects dominated most of the planning and management activities and were extended to all facets of the decontamination work at the former Shiprock uranium millsite. These planning aspects are discussed and their use to develop a work plan is described. The management aspects are discussed and their use to establish a management structure are also presented. PLANNING Some method of procedure, formulated beforehand, was necessary to govern the decontamination work at the former Shiprock uranium millsite. This procedure was expressed in the form of a work plan which served several listed purposes. 1. It defined the work to be done and the sequence it would follow. 2. It was used as a yardstick to measure progress. 3. It was used to assign organizational responsibilities. Several factors were considered to aid in the development of the plan. These factors are discussed below: Goals It was established that radiation exposure was occurring to persons working at the millsite, and in an around the community of Shiprock, from airborne radioactive mill wastes and radon-222 exhaling from the tailings piles. The goal set for the decontamination work was to reduce on-site exposures to levels acceptable for the millsite occupants. The attainment of this goal would also have a substantial impact in reducing off-site exposures. The objectives necessary to achieve the goal were consolidation and containment of the wastes. The former objective implies decontamination of the millsite and environs, and the later implies stabilization of the wastes. In practice, a total and complete decontamination of the millsite and contaminated environs would be very difficult and costly. The costs for decontaminating them could be high enough that an alternative method might be more cost-effective for reducing human exposures (i.e, move the affected people away from the source). The interim guide "Radiological Criteria for the Decontamination of Inactive Uranium Millsites" was used for the decontamination criteria (EPA 74). Briefly, the criteria state that off-pile decontamination should be effective enough to reduce the net above ground exposure rate to less than 10 [u]R/hr for unrestricted use of the affected area. When decontamination cannot readily be achieved, the exposure rate levels could be relaxed to 40 [u]R/hr; however, the affected area has to be restricted. The second objective, waste containment, means isolating the wastes from the biosphere. Since no method of containment was available at the beginning of the millsite decontamination effort, temporary containment (interim stabilzation) became the objective. The tailings pile and decontamination wastes would be covered with clean fill. The interim stabilization should last from 5 to 10 years until the final disposition of the wastes will occur. The goal, therefore, would be achieved by decontaminating the off-pile areas to less than 10 uR/hr where practical. The decontamination wastes would be used to plate the surface of the tailings pile and would be covered with clean fill. Radiological Survey The radiologial survey is the key factor for planning a decontamination activity. The survey should delineate the spread and depth of the contaminants relative to the decontamination criteria. Surface wastes, in general, can be evaluated for spread and depth with reasonable radiation survey equipment. Subsurface wastes on the other hand can be missed entirely, as happened during the radiation survey at the Shiprock site, although numerous exploration holes were bored and dug. The survey results can be used to define areas that may not be amenable to decontamination because of complications or safety reasons. For example, no decontamination of the bluff base was to be attempted because of the possibility the bluff might collapse on the personnel and equipment. Contaminated bottoms of decant ponds on the flood plain were not removed because they would be slurried by ground water. Slurry removal was deemed inefficient because the contaminants would be scattered and no equipment was available for its transport. It is often alleged by mine ventilation engineers that no reliable method exists to forecast the levels of radiation to be encountered in future uranium mines. It results that the design of uranium mine ventilation systems is based on factors other than radiological hazards, such as radon and radon daughter concentrations, for which permissible limits are set. Ventilation has been used to date as the main control mechanism for radon and radon daughters. Although it has become increasingly difficult to provide enough ventilating air to reduce the radon gas and its daughter products to safe levels in some mining arrangements, it is not the object of this paper to discuss alternatives to ventilation. This paper will describe a methodology followed by the authors over the years to estimate the levels of radiation to be encountered in underground and open pit uranium mines. Ventilating air is used to maintain working level concentrations within safe limits. The sources of radon and radon daughters and the quantities of each which will be produced, will be of great value in planning and designing a ventilation system to control them. This information can afterwards be integrated into the overall mine design. The methodology to be outlined can also be used to estimate, given a mine design format, the radiation levels to be encountered. If levels are not acceptable, modifications in the mine design can be made at an early stage. The emphasis is placed on an integrated effort where the ventilation engineers and the mine design engineers work in close collaboration from the very start of the mining project. Estimation of radon and radon daughter levels can be initiated as soon as core samples are obtained from the exploration programmes.

Red bauxites from Breadnut Valley, Clarendon Parish, Jamaica, are very homogeneous in texture. Bauxite minerals are uniformly distributed in a groundmass, the predominant grain size being smaller than l um (Figure 1 Although the deposits have a massive, non-stratified structure, they all seem to have been affected by postformational faulting which is evidenced by shear zones running subvertically through the deposits. These shear zones stand out very clearly because of a yellow staining along their faces. Often yellow zones, ranging from a few m to several cm in thickness, have developed. When the shear zones are cut at an angle, they appear as yellow veins. Near the surface of the deposits, yellow material forms shallow irregular lenses (Figure 2). In most cases, tree roots (hair roots), or their imprints, are associated with the shear zones or stained areas. In fact, the yellowish color is especially pronounced along these roots and often disappears where the roots end (Figure 3). The mineral composition and texture of red groundmass and yellow zones are markedly different. Secondary phosphate minerals and a higher goethite to hematite ratio characterize the mineral composition of the yellow zones. It should also be noted that Al-substitution in goethite from these areas is significantly higher than in goethite occurring in the groundmass (Figure 4).

Secondary data are important in geostatistical simulation of continuous variables. Geophysical data and geological trends are used for modeling porosity and permeability. Multiple mineral grades must often be modeled for mining applications. Sequential Gaussian simulation (SGS) is often used because of its relative simplicity and robustness. The two most common approaches to integrate secondary data in Gaussian simulation are with (1) locally varying mean, or (2) collocated cokriging. A significant problem with both of these techniques is variance inflation, that is, the variance of the resulting simulated values is too high because of an inappropriate decision of stationarity or an artifact of choosing a single secondary data in presence of many. We introduce a self-healing procedure for dynamic correction of this problem. The dynamic correction is different for the locally varying mean approach and for collocated cokriging since there are different reasons why each of these methods causes variance inflation. The reasons for variance inflation are discussed and the self-healing is applied to a number of data sets.

The occurence of primary stratiform and vein gold deposits in the Precambrian rocks of Northeastern Brazil is discussed. The stratiform deposits are related to clastic sediments (quartzites and conglomerates). The veins are associated with quartz and sulfides and are structurally controlled by shear zones. The gold was recovered for a long time by small miners. Developmental programmes for large scale mining are now envisaged. The recovery problems and gold economics are also discussed.

This paper presents a cyclic queueing model that evaluates the productivity of a shovel-truck materials haulage system. For a cyclic queueing problem with exponentially distributed service times, a cyclic queueing model provides exact solutions in a fraction of the time that simulation takes to produce an approximate solution. The model is applied to an example problem, and the results are validated with simulation. Simulation is used to show that the assumption of exponentially distributed service times and steady state are not serious problems. A cyclic queueing model can be used to quickly obtain an accurate assessment of the productivity of a shovel-truck system.
