Gold leaching of an auriferous pyrite ore from the Portovelo deposit in Ecuador indicates that noncyanide leaching systems, such as thiocyanate and thiourea, are not as effective as the traditional cyanide system. For example, whereas approximately 95% of the gold can be leached from the ore with cyanide, only about 50% gold dissolution can be achieved with a thiocyanate leaching system. Electrochemical measurements indicate that gold is not cathodically protected by pyrite in these systems. Based on the results of preliminary diagnostic experiments, it appears that gold dissolution in thiocyanate and thiourea systems is limited by passivation due to the formation of either elemental sulfur or sulfur compounds on the gold surface.

This paper reviews the impact of the idler set on the performance of belt conveyors. Idler rolls as part of the load support system and their interaction with the conveyor system will be discussed. in particular, the rotating performance of the individual idler roll concentrating on the rotating resistance and life of the bearing and seal design are addressed in detail. A basis for the development of performance specifications for use in conveyor design that takes advantage of the idler manufacturers design and manufacturing expertise is discussed.

One substantial element of the NATM is to take into consideration the geotechnical rock behavior in the design of excavation and support methods. Even if this opinion is being shared increasingly, the stress analysis is not the sole criterion for a successful tunnel drive. By the beginning, the inventors of the NATM have clearly defined a number of principles which have kept their validity until now. The evaluation of different failure cases demonstrate how necessary the observance of these principles and their strict following during execution are besides the stress analysis. The great number of successfully excavated NATM tunnels are an impressive evidence for these principles.

This paper presents the results on noise testing of a fan only, as well as the results of a steel silencer and of flexible silencers that were connected directly to a fan. On-site facilities and free-field method set by the British Standards Institution were used to measure and then compare the fan only and different practical silencer configuration setups. In order to determine the fan-silencer combination that would give the maximum noise attenuation, total noise intensity, noise contributed to by the fan motor only, as well as aerodynamical noise created through air interacting with the fan parts were considered to obtain decibel readings for the octave bands. Subsequently, the optimal configuration found was the setup with flexible silencers on the fan inlet and the fan outlet. If only one silencer is used, it should be installed on the fan inlet. The aerodynamic noise affects the low frequencies. The flow noise is then overtaken at 1 kHz by the mechanical noise.

To deal with an unexpected event such as fire, prevention and preparedness are important elements in an underground mine's strategic plan. The purpose is to prevent afire before it initiates and to be prepared to deal with it when it does occur. This paper highlights a technology that may be used by the mining workforce to minimize such occurrences. It discusses thermal imaging cameras and their many applications to detect equipment failures or hot spots before they develop into afire. It also evaluates the feasibility of using thermal imaging cameras for emergency responders to assist them during exploration, rescue and fire fighting efforts. These thermal imaging systems allow rescue personnel to see in darkness and through dense smoke, thus making it easier to locate heated areas and missing or trapped personnel.

Years ago, personal computers (PC) were pricey devices destined for who knows where in the process industry. Now their use runs the gamut from low end data acquisition systems to high performance windows into the process area. Their applications range from CAD, CAM, CIM, and CAE to factory floor scheduling, process planning QC, facility management, cell control, and publishing. This discussion traces the evolution of a zinc plant's control automation program beginning with a PC as an operator interface and migrating to higher level work stations. Included in this paper will be a discussion of an Open Industrial System and the role PCs have played in this facility.

Arizona's geologic history is complex, resulting in a diversity of rock types and earth materials, including those of commercial interest. Regional variations in geologic history gave rise to three geologic provinces and an inequitable distribution of both metallic and nonmetallic mineral wealth. The Colorado Plateau is largely composed of flat-lying Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks and late Cenozoic volcanic fields and sedimentary deposits. Associated resources include gypsum, halite, sylvite, clays, specialty sand, flagstone, volcanic products, and aggregate. The adjacent Transition Zone features a large expanse of Proterozoic rocks, economically important Devonian and Mississippian carbonate rocks, and Tertiary volcanic and sedimentary materials. Nonmetallic resources in this province include facing and dimension stone, aggregate, decomposed granite, chrysotile asbestos, gypsum, clay, barite, fluorspar, zeolites, and limestone used for lime, cement, and railroad ballast. The Basin and Range Province has the most complex geologic history and, therefore, the most diverse assemblage of industrial mineral occurrences. These include halite, gypsum, clay, aggregate, decomposed granite, diatomite, zeolites, perlite, pumice, kyanite, limestone, marble, stone, and others. In addition, young stream deposits yield vast quantities of sand and gravel, Arizona's most economically important nonmetallic mineral commodity.

In gassy coal mines, some methane drainage is essential for mine safety, but the ratio of total methane drained to total methane produced by the mine can vary from 10 to 70 percent. The volume of methane not captured is diluted by ventilation air and vented to the atmosphere. Since captured methane can be processed and sold, it makes sense to maximize methane drainage from coal mines. This paper describes ventilation and methane drainage schemes to achieve these goals.

During the mining process, the in-situ material is broken into different size ranges, from very large pieces to very fine particles. Some of the fine particles become airborne. In underground coal mining, airborne respirable dust is associated with health and safety of the miners. The amount and size distributions of airborne dust are important parameters to effective dust control measures. The design of underground mine experiments, including sampling procedures and sample analyses methods to determine these parameters are presented in this paper. A total of fifteen continuous miner cuts were sampled. The amount of dust generated during the cutting process and the relationship between total and respirable airborne dust concentrations and amounts are examined. The amount of respirable dust airborne is on the average only 0.016% of the respirable dust generated. On the average, 61% of the total airborne dust measured is in the respirable size range. The amount of respirable airborne is on the average 36% of the respirable size fraction in the total airborne dust. For equal proportion of rock and coal material cut, rock contributes about twice as much fines (=0.22 mm) as coal. Additional fundamental research is necessary to further the understanding of the airborne propensity of respirable dusts in mine atmospheres.

A previous investigation showed that corrosion currents estimated from polarization curves for the pyrrhotite-grinding media system under abrasion correlated well with corrosion currents estimated from marked ball wear test data by applying Faraday's law. Freshly abraded metal debris were magnetically attracted to pyrrhotite and lowered the rest potentials of the mineral particles, thereby affecting the corrosive wear. A comprehensive approach to the development and organization of an expert system designed to assist electricians in diagnosing electrical faults in mining machinery is discussed. The system includes diagnostic, reference, and tutorial programs. The diagnostic portion of the system is based on a causal-reasoning approach, which is used to establish a hierarchy of symptoms and the subsequent production rules for identifying component-level failures in the motor-control circuit of a shuttle car. With this approach, conclusions are developed directly from knowledge of the circuit and its behavior (in both working and failure modes) based on first principles, rather than the heuristics of a domain expert. The symptoms and their hierarchal structure are formulated by creating "what if' scenarios and performing a qualitative circuit analysis for each fault. Techniques for incorporating interactive graphical displays of the circuit schematic into the diagnostic portion of the system are also presented. Supportive computer programs that provide reference material and tutorials on the circuit are also described.

INTRODUCTION The following papers describe the extraction of nickel in the form of ferronickel from the Dominican laterites. The Falconbridge process was developed initially in the Falconbridge Metallurgical Laboratories and subsequently in several successive stages of pilot plant operation in the Dominican Republic. In the course of this work we came to believe that there is advantage in piloting on site. Mining, metallurgical and geo-political considerations all have major impact and that belief has been borne out by commercial plant experience. Lateritic nickel ores differ substantially, even within the same orebody, in their amenability to extraction methods. The Falconbridge process takes account of the heterogeneous nature of the deposit. Three years of geological field exploration led to ten years of process development after it was realised that the then known metallurgical processes would not give economical extraction from the Dominican ores. In addition to establishing the viability of a novel pyrometallurgical approach, it was necessary to verify design parameters for a very considerable scale-up to prototype commercial operation. The plant was eventually constructed within the original estimates of time and cost. Unique features contributing to the technical and commercial success of the project are described. Additionally, some bold extrapolation based on pilot plant work, eventually proved to be quite conservative. The mine is not a conventional open pit operation, but is perhaps better characterised as an earth moving job. Novel application of mobile equipment led to great flexibility in the mine, where operation of several mining fronts is essential to maintaining uniformity of ore feed to the plant. This paper describes improvements in SAG and AG mill liner designs and their cumulative effect on wear life and mill availability. Routine procedures used by many SAG and AG mill operators to improve liner life are reviewed. Guidelines are provided for estimating the time required to replace worn liners along with practical methods to reduce downtime for liner replacement. Finally, the effects of mill operating conditions on liner wear life and breakage are considered.

Abstract - A shiploading terminal near Punta Arenas, the southernmost city of the world (lat. 53°-10'S, long. 70°-54' W) is described. Strong winds, choppy seas, frequent gales, rain, and snow make it difficult to load ships at an offshore berth in this area. Detailed site investigations, including a wind-recording program, supplied sufficient information for the analysis of operating conditions. The weather pattern of the entire region, including the predictability of gales, was utilized in the analysis. The results showed that a bulk loading terminal at this location is feasible, provided that the design takes into consideration the specific problems of the site. The final layout shows a terminal that can be approached from several different directions, depending on the direction of the wind. The mooring system is arranged to allow alter- native ways of attaching and casting off mooring lines and executing docking and departing maneuvers. The berth is supported on piles and contains the minimum of structures, relying on a slewing shiploader to reach the ship in any position, with only limited fore and aft shifting of the vessel for loading the extreme hatches. Results of wind recording, statistical analysis of wind and wave data, operating criteria, and the results of berth availability analysis are included in the paper.

A laboratory tower mill was used to investigate the effect of some variables on the power requirements of a plant mill. The grinding laws were tested for fine grinding and Charles' law and Rittinger's law found to be most closely satisfy the experimental data. The effects of ball size, ball charge mass and media type were investigated. The screw speed was altered to control the power input as required. The results indicate that changes in these variables will change the grinding kinetics but in terms of the grinding efficiency they have no effect on the size-energy relationship. The main factor in the specific energy efficiency is the transfer of the input energy to the charge by variation of the agitation mechanism. The efficiency of a tumbling ball mill and a pin stirred mill were tested for comparison.

As per the current conceptual design presented by the Department of Energy, the exploratory shaft facility (ESF) becomes a part of the repository if the Yucca Mountain site is found suitable for repository development. Therefore, the design of the ESF should be compatible with the performance requirements for the repository. The construction methods selected should limit to the extent practical, the degree and the extent of damage to the surrounding rock mass. The ESF construction and operation should be compatible with the site data gathering activities, such as geological, thermomechanical, hydrological and geochemical testing.

Steven Tubbs From mine to farm is a long journey for Florida's phosphate, but it is an important one to the American farmer who uses phosphate fertilizers to replenish the soil and produce the crops which eventually wind up on the American dinner table. In this phosphate-food connection, transportation plays a vital life-giving role, a role that is unique because of the large quantities of phosphate produced and the mineral's location in relation to its markets. Florida Leads World Florida is the world's largest phosphate producer, supplying 80% of the nation's and a third of the world's annual total. About 95% of Florida's phosphate goes into agricultural chemicals, with 90% going into fertilizers. Phosphate production is primarily concentrated in west central Florida, with the exception of mining and processing in north Florida by Occidental Chemical Co. The phosphate rock is beneficiated at the mine sites and then is transported out of Florida in a raw state, or to one of the industry's 18 chemical complexes where it is processed further. In 1981, Florida produced more than 42 Mt (46 million st) of phosphate rock-a 1% decrease from 1980. The industry also produced more than 12 Mt (13 million st) of phosphate chemical products in 1981 and transported them to both domestic and foreign customers. This year, the state's phosphate production and shipments are substantially lower than recent annual levels because of a depressed worldwide phosphate market. With production down slightly in 1981, shipments declined and company inventories increased dramatically. Phosphate-related shipments through the port of Tampa alone fell 20%. As a result, in 1982, phosphate operations cut production to reduce inventories. According to the Fertilizer Institute, during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1982, phosphate rock production fell 18%; phosphate rock shipments, 28%; finished fertilizer production, 30%; finished fertilizer shipments, 25%; and phosphate rock exports declined by 20%. Despite depressed conditions, Florida phosphate production and shipments are expected to increase in the near future with more rock being processed into fertilizer products. A modeling scheme is developed to simulate the hydrogeologic effects of mine design and development in unsaturated rock. Simulations are conducted using the UNSAT2 finite element computer program and hydrogeologic data from the site of a proposed mined-out waste repository at Yucca Mountain, NV. Results of the simulations are analyzed for: •variations in the direction of ground water flow and in the distribution of pressure head caused by the design of the mined out openings; and •mine design variables that affect the predicted rates of mine water inflow. Evaluating the hydrogeologic impacts of mine design and mine development in unsaturated rock is significant in several respects. Characterization of the preemplacement of wastes along the fastest path ground water flow system at the Yucca Mountain site has been a primary research effort. Ultimately, however, the degree to which waste isolation is achieved will depend largely on the post-mining hydrogeologic environment as altered by the mine design and on the radionuclide inventory and resulting heat effects of the repository. Therefore, an ongoing characterization of the proposed mined-out nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, NV, is recommended. Modeling results indicate that: •mined out openings will affect the movement of ground water, both in rate and direction; •hydraulic effects of mine development depend on the hydrogeologic environment and on mine design geometry; •mine water inflow is possible in the unsaturated zone, even for mines developed in hydrogeologically homogeneous rocks; and •mine water inflow can occur at values of down ward flux that are appreciably less than the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the overlying rocks.

Few Earth Scientists realize fully the assumptions they are making, willing or not, when pooling into a same histogram data coming from different locations and considering such histogram as an estimate of a probabilistic distribution. First they need the hypothesis of stationarity in space; second the presence of spatial auto-correlations implies that data be unequally weighted according to their relative locations and the degree of spatial continuity of the underlying phenomenon. The novel technique of indicator kriging allows construction of local or global histogram which can be considered as unbiased estimators of precisely defined probabilistic distributions, full account being given to the underlying continuity. Such estimates of local distributions can be used in mine planning for estimation of local recoverable reserves.
