"INTRODUCTION During the last decades, many underground facilities for the storage of hydrocarbons have been excavated worldwide and the technology is fully mature. Similarly to other underground structures, the initial basic design has to be adapted along with the work progress, in order to cope with the actual site conditions and in particular the geology, hydrogeology and associated rockmass quality. In addition, Client’s or underground Contractor’s constraints (such as resources availability, schedule or cost impact) may vary from design to construction and require last minute adjustments. Engineers are required to introduce flexibility and anticipation of unexpected situations (similar to the above-mentioned) while conceiving large underground facilities. Although most of the cases require only minor adaptations, crucial parts of the facility have sometimes to be considerably modified and reviewed. This article will present four cases evidencing how the design of one of these essential structures - the concrete plug – has been adjusted during site implementation without impairing the initial performances. Hydrodynamic containment The product containment of the unlined caverns discussed here is ensured by the principle of hydrodynamic containment. A permanent water flow is naturally or artificially maintained with an orientation toward the storage cavern and then, neither product-tight membrane nor lining are required. The hydraulic gradient (and the associated water flow lines), being directed from the surrounding mass toward the cavern, prevent from outward migration of the product. If the hydraulic gradient is not sufficient or if the water table is evidencing instability, water can be artificially injected into the rockmass through purpose-built boreholes, drilled from dedicated galleries. This water injection system, called the water curtain, is generally located several tens of meters above the level of the cavern. This principle is illustrated here after."

Epigenetic ore deposits in Nevada and Utah occur in clusters or belts in a variety of tectonic settings. Many are concentrated in the western half of Nevada in a region containing numerous, relatively large intrusive bodies. Throughout Nevada and Utah, they tend to be clustered in elongate zones or belts. Some of these belts are well defined by the distribution of mineral deposits, patterns of igneous rocks, alinements of faults, and aeromagnetic anomalies, whereas others are equivocal. The Pioche belt in eastern Nevada and western Utah, the Eureka belt in central Nevada, and the Manhattan belt in western Nevada exemplify the general characteristics of these belts, the close relation of some belts to geologic structure, and the lack of a clear correspondence in other belts. Some of these belts are characterized by alined or en echelon faults that disrupt the north-trending Basin ranges, by belts of Cretaceous and Tertiary granitoid and porphyry intrusive rocks near which the ore deposits occur, and by alined magnetic anomalies generally related to the Cretaceous and Tertiary intrusive rocks. All the mineral belts have produced precious and base metals and tungsten; the Manhattan belt in addition has produced magnesite and brucite; and the Pioche belt, uranium, fluorspar, and alunite. The belts in Nevada and Utah may be related to a variety of factors, such as zones of structural weakness in Precambrian rocks, transverse zones of lateral faulting, localized areas of igneous activity, or a combination of these and other factors. Specific types of ore deposits in Nevada and Utah seem related compositionally to the intrusive bodies with which they are associated. Iron deposits, for example, are associated with mafic intrusive rocks such as diorite or gabbro, whereas copper deposits generally and tungsten deposits almost exclusively are associated with granitic intrusive rocks such as quartz monzonltc and granodiorite.

The Bushveld Complex of South Africa contains almost 90% of the world’s reserves of platinum group minerals (PGMs). In the flotation of PGMs, there are significant challenges arising from the need to treat ever-decreasing grades of the relevant ore deposits. The major challenge in the flotation of these ore bodies is the control and management of the gangue minerals, particularly silicates such as orthopyroxene and plagioclase feldspar which are often rimmed with talc which makes them naturally floatable. It has been shown that various polysaccharide depressants such as CMC and guar have different properties in terms of depressing the gangue minerals. Since the PGMs are often associated with sulphides, copper sulphate is widely used as an activator in PGM flotation but can inadvertently activate the gangue minerals and reduce the recovery of PtTe2 which accounts for up to 40% of the Pt in the Platreef ore body. Depressants also reduce the mass of solids reporting to the froth and can thus destabilize the froth. This effect on the froth can be mitigated by using higher frother dosages or water of higher ionic strength. In summary due care needs to be taken to carry out site test work to develop an optimum ratio of collector, frother, activator and depressant to ensure that the highest grades and recoveries of the PGEs are obtained while reducing depressant dosage as much as possible. Chromite recoveries can be reduced through the application of gravity separation or reducing entrainment through reduced water recovery. INTRODUCTION The Bushveld Complex located in the north of South Africa contains the world’s largest deposit of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) (1). The so-called upper Critical Zone of the Complex hosts the largest concentration of platinum group elements (PGEs) in the world. The Zone hosts the Upper Group Chromitite No.2 (UG2) reef and Merensky Reef as well as the Platreef mineralization of the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. The Merensky pegmatoid Zone contains the base metal sulphide grains and associated PGMs. Of particular importance to the topic of this paper is the occurrence in these reefs of various gangue minerals. The Merensky Reef consists predominantly of orthopyroxene (~60%), plagioclase feldspar (~20%), pyroxene (~15%), phlogopite (5%) and occasional olivine. Secondary minerals such as talc, serpentine, chlorite and magnetite have widespread occurrence. Of these, talc is the only mineral to show significant natural floatability (2,3). Although present in small amounts talc is closely associated with pyroxene and imparts significant floatablity to the high concentrations of pyroxene present in these ores (4). The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of pyrrohtite (~40%), pentlandite (~30%) and chalcopyrite (~15%). The major platinum group minerals are cooperite (PtS), braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS], sperrylite (PtAs2) and PGE alloys. The UG2 consists predominantly of chromite (between 60 – 90% by volume) with lesser silicate minerals (5 – 30% pyroxene and 1 – 10% plagioclase). Other minerals present in minor concentrations, can include silicates, oxides and base metal sulphides. Total PGE varies by locality but on average range between 4 and 7 g/t. The PGMs present in the UG2 Reef are highly variable, but generally the UG2 is characterised by PGE sulphides such as laurite (RuS2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS. The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite. The Platreef is located in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. This reef consists of a complex assemblage of rock types, with pyroxenites, serpentinites and calc-silicates being the most abundant. Base metal mineralization and platinum group element (PGE) concentrations are found to be highly irregular, both in value as well as in distribution. The addition of new data and corrections can be made under the control of a simple editing session. All programs for this system are written in FORTRAN and executabe "MACROS".. After the addition of new data, the whole file Is reinitialized to update the binary file and cross-reference tables. Updating the binary file involves rerunning the initializing program. The creation of graphic plots like cross sections and plan views is menu-driven from a terminal and very user-friendly. Small files containing not more than 10,000 entries (survey and assay points) are suitable for this setup, particularly for computers with less than 2 Megabytes of real and virtual memory. The largest file processed contained 35,000 lines of survey and assay information and required 4 megabytes of virtual memory. Working with this size file slows down the time for the creation of plots and cross sections. Another independent system is more akin to a financial type of data base. It was installed in one Anaconda mine as part of the operation's inventory, warehouse, day-pay payroll, and purchasing data bases. It is a highly hardware-dependent system, in particular, IBM's CICS/VS (Customer Information Control System/Virtual Storage). This is a true relational data base that optimizes storage requirements, supports online inquiry, update, data entry, and data security. While this system has been tested and proven in accounting applications, it requires programming expertice in PL/I and other CICS utility programs. It is well suited for huge data bases (like the 35,000 lines of data), but cumbersome for small engineering files.

Lancaster Lime and Stone Corporation developed a quarry operation in 1971 and 1972 for the production of high calcium limestone and construction aggregates, or roadstone. The quarry operation is situated in southeastern Pennsylvania in the northern part of Lancaster County. The geology of the high calcium limestone deposit had a powerful influence on all aspects of planning this operation. My purpose is to trace the influence of geology throughout the planning and thereby point out the discipline that geology imposed on the planning, and indeed, continues to impose on the operation. Lancaster Lime and Stone Corporation is one of four wholly- owned subsidiary companies of Kurtz Materials Corporation. Kurtz Materials Corporation, through its operating subsidiaries, is a supplier of basic materials to the construction industry including crushed stone, ready mixed concrete, concrete masonry units and a wide range of precast and prestressed concrete products.

The mineral zircon is mined for use as specialty foundry sands, abrasives, ores of ZrO2 and zirconium metal, refractories, and zirconium chemicals. It is produced as one of several products from heavy-mineral sand deposits associated with fossil shorelines. Because of its low coefficient of thermal expansion, its high melting point, its high refractive index, and its chemical inertness, it is an attractive refractory material. Zircon varies from deposit to deposit in terms of grain size, grain shape, and chemical impurity. Thus, there is a wide range of commercial products differing in impurity levels, particle shapes, and grain sizes.

Geochemical static tests are a basic component of geochemical assessments and predictions for acidic drainage, and include acid-base accounting and total-metal contents. A key database for such information is the International Static Database (ISD), which currently contains more than 45,000 static-test analyses from over 200 minesites. Such large databases are useful in identifying general trends and, just as important, the percentage of exceptions. General trends and significant exceptions can be seen in the ISD by comparing one parameter against another. This paper shows that bulk neutralization potential (bulk NP) obtained from acid titration is often a good indicator of neutralizing capacity above values of 10 t CaCO3/1000 t. Other types of calculated neutralizing capacity are then compared to bulk NP to determine if they, in fact, reliably represent actual neutralizing capacity and if they can substitute for the more time-consuming and expensive bulk NP. For example, bulk NP correlates better with Carbonate NP (from carbonate analyses) and Total-carbon NP (from total-carbon analyses) than with (Ca+Mg) CaNP (from solid-phase analyses of calcium and magnesium). This means that, in general, (Ca+Mg) CaNP is a less accurate substitute for bulk NP than the other types, and thus requires intensive site-specific justification if a substitution is attempted. This also means that measurement of the frequently less-expensive parameters of total carbon and carbonate can often substitute, within site-specific error bars, for the bulk-NP titration. However, the ISD also shows that non-carbonate minerals make the primary contribution to neutralization in up to 20% of samples, so Carbonate CaNP and Total-carbon CaNP do not always reveal the full neutralizing capacity of a sample.

The Ship Canal Water Quality Project includes a 2.7-mile, 18-ft and 10-in internal-diameter tunnel that extends from Ballard to Wallingford, two popular neighborhoods in the West of Seattle. During the TBM Main drive a 12' × 12' boulder with variable strength up to 47,000psi was encountered resulting on signicant damages to the Cutter ead. The rst part of this paper describes the design and construction of an underground recess in front of the TBM to create a safe working environment for the TBM repairs. The second part describes an injection campaign performed to seal an unforeseen water inow appeared during the excavation of the 11 Avenue Diversion Structure.

In this research, geological characteristics of sand quarries around the village, Kemerburgaz Akpinar, are studied and the mineralogical, petrographical, chemical and technological characteristics (such as sieve analysis, relative density, water absorbtion etc.) of the sand samples, obtained from the area are explained. In the general area sand' quarries, being in lacustrine formations belonging to Neogen, the stratigraphic location of the sand occurences take place at high levels of these formations, geologically. All of this pattern, being under 1 mm with a ,particle dimension, it ranges from 0,5 mm in the quantity of 99 % to 0,25 mm in the quantity of 15 relative density is 2,65 g/cm3 ; water absorbtion is 0,9%. Mineralogically, the sand samples contain Quartz (84%), Feldspar (3%), Calcite + Aragonite (10%), Pyroxen+Amphibole (1-2%), Garnet+Tourmaline (0.5%), Olivine (0.1-0.5%). Besides, sand samples contain SiO2 with the quantity of above 90%. Containing Quartz at high levels for mineralogical, petrographical and chemical characteristics, Akpinar sand will be evaluated as silica sand when the carbonate mineral is removed with the method of ore preparation such as leaching.

Research methods to develop an economic model for the determination of regional mineral advantage are discussed. An industrial complex conceptual framework is used to study potential mineral resource outputs of Kansas. A procedure for making a comparative cost analysis of potential outputs for a Kansas-based industrial complex is outlined and illustrated. Methods for estimating aggregate demand and for developing an input-output matrix for a hypothetical limestone complex are explained. The input-output matrix is expressed in physical units. A computer algorithm for converting physical production data and input cost data into total cost per unit of output information is briefly explained and flowcharted. Limitations and usefulness of this procedure in determining regional advantages are surveyed.

Mining of molybdenum at Questa, New Mexico has been accomplished by block cave methods since August, 1983. As caving progresses, a periodic geologic evaluation is made of the rock-types present in finger raises on the Grizzly Level of the mine. The production maturity of the cave can be monitored by relating this data to geologic cross-sections through the ore body. The draw point mapping program is a simple and effective tool that is used in making draw control decisions at Questa.

INTRODUCTION Strassa lies in the central part of Bergslagen, a tradi¬tional mining district, on the eastern side of the Stora Valley at an elevation of about 200 m above sea level. A railway siding runs between the mine and the Stora railway station from which there are railway connections to the shipping port and iron and steel works in Oxelosund, about 224 km away. The distance to the provin¬cial capital Orebro is about 60 km. The climate is typi¬cal for this part of central Sweden and is illustrated by the diagram of monthly precipitation and temperatures for the years 1968-1975 (Fig. 1). HISTORY There is no certain information as to when the Strassa mine was first worked, but it is known from sur¬viving accounts of mine inspectors that there were smelt¬ing works in operation in nearby villages in the 12th century. An example is the Gusselhytta ore smelting works, 10 km south of Strassa, which dates from this period. Around the year 1540 there were two smelting works in Strassa, the Upper Karberg and Lower Karberg works. Ore for these smelters was probably taken from Strassa and from the adjacent Blanka mine. In the year 1624 Strassa is mentioned by the painter Jons Nils Krook in an account of the iron mines in the Linde mining district (Linde Bergslags Jarngruvor). Several mines were listed in the area, the deepest being about 30 m. An impressive power installation is mentioned in 1639, including a piston system of lashed poles for transmit¬ting power from the Stora River to the Strassa fields. Its length was 2670 m. Common ground comprising about 20.2 km2 (5000 acres) of forest was allocated in 1689 for the furtherance of mining operations. Until the beginning of this century only the rich cen¬tral parts of the ore body were mined and these yielded, after handpicking, lump ore suitable for smelter feed. An example of the ore grades from these early times is an analysis of ore from the "Big Mine" (Storgruvan) from the year 1873: 48.5% Fe, 0.008% P, and 0.06% S. This same year a total of about 18 000 t was ex¬tracted from the Strassa mine. OWNERSHIP The mine was owned and run until 1874 by a min¬ing association made up of 119 so-called "bergsman," who were homesteaders often engaged in agriculture and timber-cutting as well. In that year the Strossa Grufvebolag (Mining Co.) was founded. In 1906 it was con¬verted into a joint stock company, the Strossa Gruveaktiebolag. This was acquired in 1907 by Metallurgiska AB for the implementation of Gustav Grondal's beneficiating and briquetting methods, for which the Strassa ore was well suited. The same year saw the completion of a new ore dressing plant with an annual production of 46 000 t of ore concentrate. In 1911 the mine passed to new hands, and in 1913 it was purchased by an Austrian company. Extensive new installations were made and in 1915 a new dressing and briquetting plant was completed with twice the capacity of the old one. In 1917 the Strassa mine was acquired by Granges. Be¬cause of unfavorable business trends and technical diffi¬culties, mining operations were brought to a close in 1923. Pumping kept the mine free of water until 1933 but it was completely filled ten years later. Up to 1950 the surface buildings and installations remained intact but the large dressing and briquetting plant burned to the ground in that year. Today only the machine shop re¬mains from this earlier period of operation, now housing parts of the Mineral Processing Laboratory. The decision to take up mining operations again was made in 1955 and construction work began the follow¬ing year. Of the old installation, only the "southern shaft" could be used for some development drifting after it had been completed with a new headframe. Other¬wise, all the buildings and installations required for the operations had to be rebuilt. New installations ready by 1960 were office and personnel facilities, a new shaft and headframe, a sorting and concentrating plant, a macadam plant, settling basins, pump stations, and a railway and yard with transport equipment. Column flotation cells continue to gain acceptance in the coal industry for the treatment of high-ash streams containing clay slimes. Unfortunately, some industrial installations have failed to meet expectations due to improper scale-up, incorrect operation and poor ancillary circuit design. To overcome these problems, case studies have been conducted to fully define the capabilities of column cells for coal applications. These data have been used to develop generic engineering guidelines for column circuit design and operation. An economic analysis has also been conducted to illustrate the importance of key capital cost considerations. These analyses indicate that column cells are significantly more expensive than conventional machines, although this difference can be greatly reduced through the installation of very large-diameter columns.

For the past few years Caro's acid has been used for the treatment of cyanide containing slurry effluents, providing a feasible alter­ naive to other slurry treatment processes including !NCO SO2 / Arr and ferrous sulfate. Presently, mines using Caro's acid gen­erate their own Caro's acid onsite making a relatively low quali­ty product. It was at this point where we, at Degussa Corporation, decided to focus our efforts on engineering a Caro's acid genera­tor capable of cost effectively producing a high quality Caro's acid solution, thus reducing operating costs significantly. Caro's acid or peroxymonosulfuric acid is not a new chem­ical nor is it new to Degussa. The product was named after Heinrich Caro (1834-1910), a German chemist who first described its synthesis and its oxidizing properties in 1898. Degussa has been producing the potassium salt of Caro's acid as the triple salt, 2KHSO5 - 2KHSO4 - K2SO4, called Caroat®, for over 30 years. Caroat® is used for household and denture cleansers, as a bleaching agent in dish washing detergents, in printed circuit board etching and for cyanide destruction in the plating industry. From our experience in producing Caroat® Degussa developed its new Caro's acid based DegOX™ technology for the treat­ment of cyanide containing effluents from gold and silver mines.

A significant wollastonite resource has been discovered and evaluated near Seeley's Bay in southeastern Ontario. The deposit occurs in Grenville Frontenac Terrane granulite facies rock within a calc-silicate skarn in contact with Proterozoic-age gabbro. The steeply-dipping and tightly-folded wollastonite skarn beds are interlayered with diopside and quartz-feldspar skarns in a southwest-plunging synclinorium. More than 9 million tonnes of a drill-proven and inferred resource grading 41 % wollastonite has been identified, as well as an additional 3 million tonnes grading 30%. Mineralogical and process test work with the wollastonite from this deposit has demonstrated the potential to produce a high purity, high aspect ratio wollastonite product.

Geologists at the Illinois State Geological Survey are evaluating geologic and land use conditions that affect the minability of coal to determine how much coal is available for development using current technology and mining practices. Coal resources are being evaluated for selected 7.5-minute quadrangle study areas. In a central Illinois study area, more than 25% of the deep-minable resources were limited from development by unstable roof conditions resulting from thick unconsolidated sediments overlying thin bedrock overburden. In some southern and southeastern Illinois study areas, geologic conditions associated with a paleo-channel limit the minability of significant resources of low-to medium-sulfur coal. Some features which were thought to limit mining, such as areas of closely-spaced oil wells, have been found to have minimal impact on the amount of coal recovered.

There are two approaches to developing a minicomputer based application for an industrial grinding circuit. Usually, the control program is coded and compilation-debugged on a large-scale scientific computing system or the minicomputer itself if the machine is available. Final debugging and testing must wait for installation and checkout of the entire minicomputer system. Two immediate disadvantages of this approach are the need to obtain, install and check out the hardware before the final debugging stages of program development can begin, and interference with normal mill operation during such final testing. This work reports on an alternative to the usual procedure. Here both compilation and execution bugs are eliminated from the application program before hardware installation by testing the control program against a reasonable dynamic simulation of the entire process. Thus, software development can be completed before the target mini is installed. Such off-line development requires a reasonably accurate mathematical model for the entire process system as well as a suitable simulation package for communication between the simulated environment and the minicomputer application program. Specific data describing the design configurations and dimensions of the mills, cyclones, sumps, pump characteristics and analog controller configuration were supplied by ANAMAX for a grinding division consisting of a rod mill followed by two ball mills in parallel. This information was used to set up a plausible model structure. Steady state ANAMAX data on particle size analysis at various points in the circuit and corresponding values of flow rates, pump speeds, sump heights and slurry densities were used for model parameterization. The preferred operating control strategy - "best grind at operator-set rod mill feed rate" - was set by ANAMAX. An inferential particle size analysis technique using the cyclone cluster as an on-line particle size sensor was used in a novel control strategy_ to achieve the stated objective. Two disturbances common in the ANAMAX circuits - rod mill scoop pluggage and shut down/start up of one of the ball mills - were studied in detail. This report out- lines the steps in system development and testing and the results obtained.

Today’s industrial technology offers to optimize and reutilize the resources available in terms of scum that remains after hot rolling in steel rerolling mills in Rajasthan, India. Vast reserves of low-grade coal exist and tons of mill scale are produced everyday after hot rolling in steel rerolling mills in Rajasthan, India. The present research work aimed to optimize the various parameters of solid-state reduction of mill scale using low-grade coal from Rajasthan, India. This study investigates the effect of reduction temperature (850–950 °C in steps of 50 °C), reduction time (60 to 180 min, in step of 60 min), mill scale size (800– 300 μm), and mill scale to coal ratio (1:1, 1:2 and 1:3) on achievable metallic iron percentage and its metallization. A higher percentage of iron content is obtained at a lower particle size of 300 μm. The structural analysis is carried out on 300 μm mill scales using XRD analysis, which shows the percentage of iron is approximately 63%, and metallization above 80% can be obtained under the reduction temperature at 900 °C for 180 min, for 1:3 ratio (mill scale to coal ratio). The chemical composition of the mill scale is obtained using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and particle sizes as well as distribution of mill scale are determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The elements present in the mill scale are also verified using EDS, which indicates the presence of a major portion of Fe, followed by Fe2O3, Si, and C, respectively.

INTRODUCTION The sublevel stoping mining method is usually applied to a relatively steeply dipping, competent ore body, surrounded by competent wall rock. Ore is produced by drilling and blasting longholes, which can range from 50 mm (2 in.) to 200 mm (7% in.) diam, with lengths up to 90 m (300 ft). Longholes can be inclined in any direction, but the ring or pattern usually forms a plane, and the holes are blasted as a unit. Recently developed mobile drilling and loading machinery, as well as new explosives products, blasting techniques, and cemented sand and rock fill have made sublevel stoping a highly efficient and versatile mining method. When designing a sublevel stoping production sys- tem, it should be kept in mind that production rates from conventional sublevel stopes vary widely through- out the life of the stope. Early production is at a low rate, coming only from the drawpoints near the slot, but increases as new drawpoints are reached by the stope face. As the stope nears completion, again, fewer drawpoints are productive. Enough drawpoints must be available at any time to provide required production. Drawpoint availability should be compared to equipment availability; plan for more drawpoints than are needed at any one time. Accurate, realistic scheduling is essential to smooth production rates. Also, initial recovery of ore in a stope/pillar block is normally from 35% to 50% in sublevel stoping. Planning of pillar recovery, representing the majority of ore tonnage in a production block, must be done during early mine planning. Since much of the development already done for primary stoping (access for drilling, drawpoints, and haulageways), can be used for pillar recovery, early production from pillars is highly desirable. The following description of components of the system is an attempt to highlight some of the most important features and requirements of mechanized sublevel stoping methods. Similar comments would apply to the use of older equipment (column-and-arm drill setups, slushers, etc.) in similar methods. As in any good mining system, maximum economic recovery of the resource in the ground is the primary consideration. STOPE DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS Length and Width The following are some of the factors which affect sublevel open stope length and width dimensions: ore body geometry, principal stress directions, competence of stope back, optimum drill pattern, and drilling drift layout. In new mines initial stope layout design may occur before the ore body is actually intersected by mine workings. Stope dimensioning is a critical decision, and assistance from as many knowledgeable people as possible at this stage is essential. Operators with past experience in similar ore bodies, rock mechanics experts, and others with mine design experience should participate at this stage of stope planning. Height The following are some of the factors which must be considered in determining stope height: competence of stope pillar and stope/fill walls; slenderness ratio of adjacent pillars; ore body dip; ore body thickness; hole depth capability of the drilling machine; fragmentation characteristics of the ore; and level intervals in existing mines. In competent ground, drill-hole length and accuracy are the most important determinants of stoping height. Frequently entire drilling sublevels can be eliminated because of the depth capability of sophisticated drilling equipment, resulting in significant development cost savings. Drawpoint Location and Design Some of the most important considerations of a good drawpoint system are optimum spacing of draw- points, within the constraints of stope dimensions, for uniform drawdown and maximum recovery; excavations designed for stability for the life of the ore block to be drawn-primary stope ore as well as subsequent pillar ore; floor or roadway design including type of surface, reinforcing, grade for water runoff; orientation with respect to the main haulageway, for optimum loader maneuverability and ground stability at the inter- section; and length, to allow articulated front-end loaders to work in a straight configuration. Careful drawpoint design and construction are keys to successful production. Extra care in development, such as smooth wall blasting, rockbolts or grouted rebar, wire mesh, and shotcrete usually will ensure long draw- point life. Human exposure during production loading is of longer duration than during development or production drilling, and consequently preparation of draw- points is easily justified, particularly when pillar ore can be drawn through the same drawpoints. Secondary blasting of boulders can weaken drawpoints, also justifying good ground control techniques. A smooth draw- point floor of poured, reinforced concrete, on a grade of +3% or +4% toward the ore pile facilitates water flow out of the drawpoint, and ease of loader bucket penetration into the muck pile. Slot Raising, Slotting A slot or other space for rock expansion is necessary in conventional sublevel stoping where vertical rings or rows of holes are blasted. The slot can be started at a slot raise driven by conventional raising methods, raise boring, drop raising (predrilling and blasting a raise from the top, using small diameter-less than 200-mm (7%-in.)-holes for relief), or crater blasting (similar to drop raising, but without relief holes). Caro's (peroxymonosulfuric) acid has been reported to destroy WAD (weakly acid dissociable) CN-but, until recently, the technology has not been demonstrated in other than a laboratory setting. During the last two years, Caro's acid has been shown to successfully detoxify WAD CN-in tailings at two large North American gold mines. Using on-site FMC generators, Caro's acid reduced the WAD CN-from 40-55 ppm to below 20-35 ppm WAD CN-, the target range for the two mines. The detoxification costs using Caro's acid were less than 50% of the treatment cost of using hydrogen peroxide, the previous oxidant of choice. In addition to the considerable savings in CN-detoxification costs, lower WAD CN-values were achieved and the detoxification time with Caro's acid was greatly reduced compared to hydrogen peroxide.
