During the last few years the New Lead Belt of South- eastern Missouri has become the main source of lead in the United States. It also produces significant amounts of zinc, copper, and silver. The mines are located on a narrow, mineralized trend extending southward from Viburnum, Missouri for about thirty-five miles. The area is part of the Ozark uplift and consists of steep-sided, heavily wooded hills with narrow valleys. Surface streams are very erratic, normally having low flows but becoming rushing torrents during the violent thunderstorms that occasionally occur. Because of the pristine nature of the country and the newness of the mining developments, the environmental impact of all phases has been closely watched.

The coal companies of today have to make all of their in-the-field managers MAINTENANCE PRODUCTION MANAGERS. By using a computer application to monitor all aspects of the daily production as well as the maintenance, a company can immediately effect a cost reduction by studying the down-time and delay trends on an everyday basis. This paper will outline how a company can use a program to not only put a stop to the increasing supply and maintenance costs but start trimming each of these cost centers while actually increasing the efficiency and productivity of the current work force.

The region of metalic ore deposits in northern Chile, southern Peru, western Bolivia, and northwestern Argentina occurs in arid zones at altitudes as high as 4,600 meters. Because surface water supplies are meager, new mines require unexploited sources of water. Prolific groundwater aquifers occur in salar basins in this region of the Andean Highlands. Exploration water wells have been constructed and aquifer characteristics have been tested in eight salar basins. Results indicate groundwater quality is good. Aquifer transmissivity and storage computed from results of pumping tests indicate maximum production water well capacities in excess of 170 liters per second.

This review is based on a questionnaire sent out to 24 Canadian exploration companies, known to be active in the mineral exploration field, concerning their practice in the use of applied geochemical techniques in Precambrian terrains. Of the companies questioned, 16 returned completed questionnaires and of these, ten companies stated that they had some experience in this type of work. Of the companies who did not answer or return the questionnaire in time I know that at least three have been quite heavily engaged in applied geochemical work in the glaciated Precambrian areas. I also know that these three companies have been reasonably successful in their ventures, so I feel the following figures and opinions are, if anything, on the pessimistic side. Before continuing with the paper I would like to express my personal thanks to the Chief Geologists, Geologists and Exploration Managers of the various companies who cooperated in making this review possible by answering the questionnaires and making available summaries of their work in the glaciated terrains. Of the companies who stated that they had no experience in geochemical prospecting in glaciated Precambrian areas it is interesting to note that only two have reported that they do not use applied geochemistry at all. Two companies have reported that they make use of applied geochemistry in New Brunswick in areas of-light glaciation. Their opinion is that it is a useful aid to other techniques in evaluating mineralized areas.

This morning I would like to speak to you about an area of chemistry that is enjoying a revival-organometallic compounds. This renewed interest, principally stimulated by defense needs, has already created new markets for the products of the mineral industry. Although the consumption of metals in these new products is modest at oresent, several hold promise of importance. Because this is a new and growing market, I am sure the Council of Economics is aware of many of its facets and is interested in new developments. Of course, the chemical industry has been a significant consumer of minerals for many years. I estimate that in 1957 the chemical-industry purchased a total of $1175 million worth of minerals as raw materials (not including fuels). "The application of passive tracer gas sources in underground mines is particularly useful for long-term tracer gas studies, as well as for studies in permissible areas of underground coal mines. The use of passive perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH) sources have previously been demonstrated in mines, but this new work details the development and testing of multiple, distinct tracer compounds that can be used in passive sources. A description of their potential application in mine ventilation systems is also provided. Three tracer compounds are detailed, which are PMCH, PECH and PMCP. The release rates of these tracers were examined over a 180 day period at multiple temperatures. The advantages and disadvantages of these sources are presented, along with potential applications in understanding complicated ventilation circuits, flow through gob, and leakage. INTRODUCTION The use tracer gases for ventilation applications is an established practice, with various research projects being perform with Sulfur Hexafluoride (????6) in the past. Perfluorocarbon tracers (PFTs) however are relatively new compared to ????6, which is proven to be useful in ventilation and air modeling experiments along with other PFTs (Watson, Wilke, Dietz, Heiser, & Kalb, 2007). These liquid tracers are characterized by low background presence in air, inert behavior with other gases, high detectability with a gas chromatograph and low toxicity. A design was proposed called a permeation plug release vessel (PPRV), which initially introduced by Brookhaven National Laboratory to meet those requirements. The PPRV works by allowing the gaseous form of the tracer to diffuse through the permeable silicone stopper and evaporate into the open air on the other side. The PFTs inside the vessels are injected as a liquid but instantly begin to convert to their gaseous phases at room temperature due to high vapor pressures (Zhang, H., Cloud, A.,2006). Previous studies have detailed how release rates change based on plug thickness across various temperatures (Jong et al., 2015), but not on the release rate stability based on temperature across multiple tracers. For use in underground mines passive release sources need to be durable, be simple to manufacture, have customizable and reliable release rates as well as a long operating life. The PPRV vessel provides a steady release of tracer gas that is essential for long term passive release experiments, making it a viable vessel for the PFTs being tested. The PPRV design also allows for vessels to be bundled together to achieve release rates at detectable levels and allows for the capability to run ventilation surveys with multiple tracers simultaneously. The ability to conduct ventilation surveys with multiple tracers using the PPRV bundling design and detection of the PFTs makes testing the tracers and design together a promising potential for complex and long term mine ventilations studies."

Principally, mining natural resources is a finite business that reaches its limits once the deposits mined are depleted, the resources can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way or substitutes are pushing the mined products out of the market. An example of the latter is the increasing replacement of coal with natural gas and renewables in power generation in the United States [1]. According to the model of the product lifecycle, the global hard-coal mining industry has reached a stagnation phase [2]. The trend is obvious. Coal use peaked in 2013 [3], and the coal demand of China has been slowly decreasing since then [4]. Coal consumption in the United States saw a 16 percent decline from 726 Mt (800 million st) to 608 Mt (670 million st) between 2015 and 2019. In addition, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, it will not rise again [5]. The decline is attributed to complex market dynamics, from low gas prices because of the “shale gas revolution” [6] to federal environmental regulations like the Clean Power Plan. Moreover, important players like the United Nations and the European Union have already begun to describe pathways toward decarbonization. Increasing competition between coal-mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. Companies will focus on the best deposits. European countries, like France, Spain or Germany, are only forerunners of this development — their centuries of coal production have passed. The concept of sustainable development (SD) is fundamentally based on a model of progress in which ecological, economic and social dimensions should be developed equally and positively. Questions arise, such as: How can SD be a corporate goal in a phase of decline? How can former mining regions sustainably progress to a better future? The steps Germany has taken to handle the coal decline in a sustainable way and the lessons learned from this process are described in this paper.

The northern zone of the Indus Basin comprises a vast area of essentially level land in West Pakistan which is irrigated by means of a complex system of canals that distribute more water to more land than any other irrigation system in the world. In spite of the development of this extensive irrigation system, production of food and fiber has not met the requirements of the country. The major reasons that crop production has not reached anticipated levels are the lack of adequate irrigation supplies and effective subsurface drainage. As a result, yields per acre are among the lowest in the world for areas where irrigation is practiced, and many thousands of acres of valuable crop land have been removed from production or are seriously affected by salinity and waterlogging. To rectify the problems of irrigation supply and drainage the Government of Pakistan has undertaken a program of Salinity Control and Reclamation which is being administered by the Water and Power Development Authority. The Authority retained Tipton and Kalmbach, Inc. , of Denver,, Colorado as Engineers for the program in the northern zone of the Indus Basin. -This program consists of the construction of about 30, 000 irrigation wells to provide drainage for waterlogged lands and full irrigation supplies, including leaching requirements, for; all cultivated lands. The program will ultimately ensure the productivity of 20 million acres and will involve an annual pumpage from ground water storage of nearly 40 million acre-feet of water. The value of the crops produced when the program is in full operation will be 4 to 6 times the value of the crops that could be produced without the benefits of this program.

In the United States and in Pennsylvania in particular the coal mine drainage problem is of continuing and growing interest to the coal mining industry, the state government, the federal government and the public at large. The 1965 amendments to Pennsylvania's Clean Streams Law prohibit the discharge of acid mine drainage into the streams of the Commonwealth after January 1, 1967. Because of this new legislation, the coal mining industry and state government are extremely aware of the necessity for new techniques for treatment and prevention of the flow of acid mine drainage from the active mines of the Commonwealth in order to keep the coal mining industry in business in Pennsylvania. Approximately one-third of the total volume of mine drainage presently polluting the streams of the Commonwealth originates from "active" coal operations and two-thirds comes from "abandoned" mine discharges. As early as 1963 it became evident that the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the coal industry in Pennsylvania would have to take active steps to abate the mine drainage pollution of Pennsylvania's streams and rivers. This became quite clear during the deliberations in Harrisburg which climaxed a twenty year struggle for effective strip mining legislation. The bituminous strip mining law enacted that year made it unlawful to have any acid discharge from active stripping operations.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing designs and estimating costs for vertical in situ copper mining wells as part of its in situ mining research program. Conceptual designs and estimated costs for "deep" 1100 m (3600 ft) recovery and injection wells in an undisturbed copper ore zone are presented. Within a single in situ copper mining well, multiple perforated well completions and associated costs are discussed for two ore zones between depths of 370 m (1200 ft) and 550 m (1800 ft). The order of well specifications for designing these wells is explained.

Debate on an appropriate, acceptable method of regulating mine and mineral processing wastes has been ongoing since Congress passed the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) on October 21. 1976. Final regulatory determination on which mineral processing wastes are excluded from the RCRA hazardous waste regulations under the Bevill amendment was made by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on June 13, 1991. Regardless of whether a mining or mineral processing facility?s waste stream(s) lost or maintained its exclusion status under the Bevill amendment, that facility can expect more stringent regulation of affected waste streams. These more stringent regulations will be added to an already complex regulatory maze, which includes the Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA), and Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), as well as state and municipal environmental regulations.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to boost domestic production of manganese. Virtually no mining exists in the low grade and/or small deposits that occur in this Country. One large, low-grade manganese deposit located in westcentral Arizona--The Artillery Peak district--was extensively studied and sporadically mined during the 1940's and 1950's. Although manganese mining in the district has been long dormant, recent studies indicate that the deposits may be amenable to economical production by heap and/or in situ leaching methods. A conceptual design for an in situ leaching system features undercutting and blasting a block of ore, leaching with SO2, and extracting the manganese as a sulfate or oxide. Possible applications to other manganese deposits depend upon formation permeability and specific manganese mineralogy.

According to previously established theoretical analysis and under certain conditions, a critical sampling grid can be determined for an earth-related space-distributed natural variable. Sampling above this critical limit adds little to the mapping results, while based on this limit the ideal process of reproducing the original phenomenon is theoretically defined. The objective of this paper is the application of the above theory to the Klidi lignite deposit in Florina, Greece, where Public Power Corporation (Greece) has conducted a sampling campaign to estimate the deposit thickness and its heating value. Data acquired for these two variables were analysed in the space domain in order to derive their respective correlation functions. The structural analysis of the deposit generated two covariance models, one for the thickness and one for the heating value, from which the critical sampling grid was identified. The conclusion drawn is that in some parts of the deposit the sampling grid is denser than required. Finally, an optimal sampling grid is proposed in order to gain the maximum information at the lowest cost.

"Refuge alternatives (RA) provide shelter to miners trapped underground during a disaster. RA manufacturers must demonstrate that their RAs meet the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and the management of heat that results from the RA occupants and mechanical/chemical systems. In this study, miner size and activity level were used to determine the metabolic heat rate, oxygen requirements, and carbon dioxide generation that is representative of miners in a refuge situation. A convenience sample of 198 male miners was used for the distribution of current US coal miners, and the composite 95th percentile height and weight were determined to be 193 cm (76 in) and 133 kg (293 lb). The resting metabolic rate (RMR) was determined to be representative of activity level in an RA. The highest likely metabolic heat generation ranged from 115 W to 135 W, depending on RA occupancy. The highest required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal were estimated to be 23 LO2/h/person (0.81 ft3/h/person) and 20 LCO2/h/person (0.71 ft3/h/person), which means the margin of safety is 50% or more when compared to the MSHA requirements. INTRODUCTION Refuge alternatives (RAs) provide shelter to miners trapped underground during a disaster. Manufacturers must demonstrate that their RAs meet Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for the supply of oxygen, the removal of carbon dioxide, and the management of heat that results from the occupants and the mechanical/chemical systems in the RA [1]. These MSHA requirements were based on a standard 70 kg (168 lb) male with an assumed allocation of activity of 80% rest and 20% moderate activity level [2]. The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the metabolic heat generation and oxygen and carbon dioxide requirements of miners in an RA based on actual miner size and more realistic RA activity levels based on current RA designs. The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and heat generation. To achieve this, researchers took the following steps to estimate the metabolic demands and the associated heat generation, oxygen requirements, and carbon dioxide production. 1. Characterized the anthropometric characteristics of the miner population. 2. Described the metabolic rate profile of RA occupants. 3. Characterized the maintenance demands of RAs. 4. Summarized oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal volumes. ANTHROPOMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS OF MINERS The weight, height, and age distributions of the adult male populations are summarized in Table 1. For each data set, the reported mean and standard deviation are provided. The 95th percentile (%ile) value for height and weight for each population was the mean plus 1.64 times the standard deviation."

Most electric motor predictive maintenance methods have drawbacks that limit their effectiveness in the mining environment. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing an alternative approach to detect winding insulation breakdown in advance of complete motor failure. In order to evaluate the analysis algorithms necessary for this approach, the USBM has designed and installed a system to monitor 120 electric motors in a coal preparation plant. The computer-based experimental system continuously gathers, stores, and analyzes electrical parameters for each motor. The results are then correlated to data from conventional motor-maintenance methods and in-service failures to determine if the analysis algorithms can detect signs of insulation deterioration and impending failure. This paper describes system design and implementation. At this writing, however, installation is still underway, and field data analysis results are not yet available.

INTRODUCTION Shaft sinking represents a relatively small proportion of the activities involved in mine development. Because of this limited utilization, shaft sinking has been one of the most difficult functions to mechanize. Although shaft machines (muckers) were introduced more than 30 years ago, the first machines were low-capacity units, and machines of this type did not gain wide acceptance by the mining industry until the late 1950s. However, the increasing depth of underground mines and the es¬calating costs of labor have increased the benefits obtain¬able from high-speed shaft sinking. The result has been a growing need for high-capacity shaft machines. Most of the machines available at the present time have been developed by modifying existing equipment to increase the payload capacity and performance. AVAILABLE SHAFT MACHINES In general, shaft machines may be classified accord¬ing to the types of digging mechanisms and the mecha¬nisms of operation. The available digging mechanisms include clamshells, cactus grabs, front-end buckets, and backhoes. The mechanisms of operation can be classified as either pneumatic or hydraulic. Selection Criteria For efficient operation, the primary consideration in selecting a shaft machine is its capacity. The minimum capacity of the machine should match the capacity of the hoisting system at the ultimate depth of the shaft. In many cases, two machines may be needed to obtain a sufficient mucking capacity. The shaft dimensions and configuration often dictate the type of machine that may be utilized; for example, an overshot loader does not work well in a circular shaft that has a diameter of less than 5.5 m (18 ft). Similarly, a single Cryderman mucker is not suitable for a large-diameter shaft, nor is it applicable where very high sinking buckets are to be used. Other factors for consideration include the degree of material fragmentation, the abrasiveness of the rock, and the amount of ground water that is inter¬sected. Machine Descriptions Riddell Mucker: The Riddell mucker, illustrated in Fig. 1, was first introduced in 1948. This is one of the most common shaft machines in the medium-capacity range. The Riddell mucker consists of a hoisting and traveling mechanism that operates a clamshell suspended on cables. The early machines operated with a 0.3 m3 (10 cu ft) clamshell and had an hourly capacity of approximately 27 t (30 st). This type of shaft machine has gained wide acceptance throughout North America. Essentially, the Riddell mucker consists of standard components, such as the pneumatic tugger hoists that operate the clamshell. The carriage is suspended on rails that also serve as the blasting set, located immediately below the shaft timbers. To effectively position the clam¬shell in the shaft, the operator controls the carriage travel by means of wheels that are driven by a pneu¬matic motor. The Riddell mucker most commonly is used in rec¬tangular timbered shafts. However, some units have been installed with circular rails, allowing them to work in circular concrete-lined shafts. A popular practice with many Riddell muckers is to increase the capacity through the use of larger clamshells, often ranging up to 0.76 m3 (1.0 cu yd), in conjunction with more powerful tugger hoists. In some large rectangular shafts, two Riddell units have been used side by side to achieve a sufficient capacity. Cryderman Mucker: The Cryderman mucker, illus¬trated in Fig. 2, is another common shaft machine in the low- to medium-capacity range. Developed in the early 1950s, it also has gained wide acceptance throughout North America. Equipped with a 0.3 m3 (10 cu ft) bucket, the Cryderman mucker has an hourly capacity of approximately 23 t (25 st). The Cryderman mucker is operated entirely by means of pneumatic cylinders and a pneumatic telescopic boom. The boom is suspended from a sectional frame¬work that is usually located at one end of the shaft. In Oct. 1981, Ranchers Exploration and Development Corp. began producing silver bullion from the Escalante mine and mill complex, located in southwestern Utah. Current in-place reserves are estimated at 2.42 Mt (2.67 million st) of ore, containing about 936 t (33 million oz) of silver at an average grade of 428.5 g/t (12.5 oz/st). The vein-type deposit is being mined underground through a decline that is currently 864 m (2,835 ft) in length, but will ultimately be at least 1.5 km (5,100 ft) long. The mine is completely mechanized with rubber-tired equipment, and is producing 680 t/d (750 stpd) of ore, five days a week, or 177 kt/a (195,000 stpy). Additional capacity is available. The cyanide leach mill and associated refinery are presently producing 4.35 t/month (140,000 oz/month) of silver bullion-an an¬nual rate of about 52.25 t (1.68 million oz). With minor modifications, the mill can produce up to about 70 t/a (2.25 million oz/year), and expansion is currently underway. History The Escalante property is located 68 km (42 miles) west of Cedar City, UT, on the west side of the Escalante Valley, where the vein forms a gentle ridge in an area of low, rolling hills. For years, the vein has been the object of considerable exploration, but never became more than a sporadic producer, primarily due to low silver prices. Heber Holt of Enterprise, UT, staked the original four claims in 1896; they were patented in 1910. During the next 48 years, limited exploration and mining activity was conducted on the property. Systematic evaluation and development did not, however, begin until March 1958, when Samuel S. Arentz, a prominent mining engineer and consultant, formed several joint ventures with mining and oil companies that conducted drilling, drifting, mining, and water drawdown tests on the property. However, it remained uneconomic, principally because of low silver prices and costs for pumping large flows of underground water. In 1975, Ranchers obtained an option on the property and in 1979 began a drilling program. As of May 1982, the company had drilled 70 core holes, bringing the number of exploratory holes drilled on the property to 138. Test mining began in 1979 as silver prices increased, and full mine development began in 1980. Mill construction began in Sept. 1980, and on Aug 29, 1981, the first ore was fed to the mill.

In 1996 a KBR (Brown and Root) led international JV was appointed to design and supervise an underground and surface package. The design of 6 km of tunnels, plus enlargements, deep shafts in glacial and sandstone deposits for the conversion of the existing LEP underground laboratory at CERN, Geneva adjacent to the Jura Mountains/Lake Geneva had to be undertaken in an operational environment and in conjunction with other underground constructions associated with the US$3bn refurbishment.

The Deserado Mine of Western Fuels- Utah Inc. installed a micro-computer based mine wide monitoring and control system for mine environment, beltway fire protection, belt operating parameters, and equipment power utilization. The Colorado School of Mines was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to document, evaluate, and report on the system design, procurement, installation, tests, and operation. This paper results from that project. The paper compares planned activities such as installation and start up, procurement contract specifications and system layout with actual performance to develop recommendations for future installations by mine operators.

Both hydrometallurgical and vapometallurgical processes often involve ores that have been previously ground and size classified. When the valuable mineral is substantially liberated, the chemical reaction is likely to occur on the particle surface and the particle core will shrink as the reaction proceeds. If the chemical reaction products are solid materials then a solid shell, usually porous, will form around the shrinking core. This is known as the core/shell or topochemical reaction model. Using a spherical approximation for the particles, equations have been developed to express the extent of chemical conversion of the particle, depending on which one of the following process or mass transport steps is rate controlling:1 (1) chemical reaction at the particle surface, (2) diffusion through the thickening reaction product shell or (3) mass transport through a boundary layer surrounding the particle. In a previous paper2 these equations were coupled with the Gates -Gaudin-Schuhmann equation 3 4 describing the distribution of particle sizes resulting from comminution of rocks and other brittle solids to develop reaction yield curves expressing the weight fraction of metal or other valuable component of the feed that was chemically converted as a function of residence time. This was done for (a) batch, (b) continuous plug flow and (c) continuous back-mix flow (continuous stirred tank) reactors or process vessels. To make the curves of general rather than special utility, the residence time (average residence time for back-mix reactors) was normalized to a dimensionless time by dividing by the time required to completely chemically convert the largest particle in the feed to reac-
