Most ores and coals contain sulphide minerals such as pyrite, FeS2, the sulphur portion of which is a ready substrate for a variety of sulphur oxidizing bacteria. Although there are several bacteria capable of oxidizing sulphide minerals, the most often discussed culprit is Thiobacillus ferrooxidans.. Oxygen from the air slowly oxidizes pyrite into sulphuric acid, but T- ferrooxidans can increase this reaction rate several 100,000 times.

The Hill is a cyanidation plant with flotation and roasting. The grinding and treatment have at the present time a capacity of 1400 tons of ore per day and the precipitation has a capacity of 6000 tons per day. The ore is delivered by a 36" conveyor belt and tripper to 8 mill bins having a capacity of 6000 tons. The ore from these bins is discharged onto 20" gathering conveyor belts which are regulated with p.i.v. speed changers to control the belt weight. A weightometer determines the tonnage milled. The feed enters the 8' x 12' rod mill through a rubber lined chute and the product is discharged through a launder to a 7' rake classifier in closed circuit with 10' by 6' hardinge ball mill. Lime slurry is added at the rake classifier to give a strength of .30#/ton. The classifier sand is fed into the ball mill with a scoop feeder and the mill discharge flows in a launder back to the classifier. The classifier overflow is pumped to a 24' by 12' bowl classifier in closed circuit with a 8' by 15' regrind mill. The bowl classifier sands are fed to this mill and the mill discharge is pumped back to the bowl. The bowl overflow at 8% - 200 mesh is the final product from the grinding circuit.

The pneumatic conveying of relatively large abrasive materials by dilute-phase conveying techniques has been applied in the underground mining industry for many years especially for backfilling mines and the hoisting of ore, coal, or rock out of the mines. The technique was extensively used in Europe, especially Germany and Britain for backfilling coal mines with rejects from the coal cleaning plants which not only helped to reduce environmental problems on the surface, but offered support to the overlaying strata in the deep underground mines, Similar techniques are being employed in the U.S.A. especially in uranium mines for the disposal of tailings, the main purpose being to extract a larger percentage of the ore from the pillars especially under weak roof conditions. Other than for the backfilling of abandoned mine entries, pneumatic conveying has not been applied in the mining industry in surface applications. In this paper, some consideration is given to three applications for open pit mining which may prove beneficial, namely hoisting coal up the high wall, sealing off auger holes, and stabilizing the high wall when being undercut by a longwall system.

"INTRODUCTION Istanbul is a unique megalopolis connecting two continents. Population growth and economic development require permanent solutions and continuous investments on the transportation infrastructure. While the average population growth rate in Turkey is around 1.3% per annum, Istanbul is growing at an even faster rate of more than 1.5%. Even more striking is the fact that car ownership in Istanbul is increasing 5% a year, which is four times faster than the population growth. Although Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) has worked persistently to improve the quantity and quality of the public transportation system in the city through, in particular, extending the available rail system network, the need for extra roads has always fallen behind demand. To make things worse, Istanbul is divided by the Bosphorus Strait, the large waterway connecting the Black Sea to the north and Marmara Sea to the south, which leads to the Mediterranean. This waterway is crossed via two suspension bridges, the Bosphorus Bridge built in 1973 and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge built in 1988. Current daily traffic across the bridges is around 450,000 vehicles per day. Ever increasing cross-Bosphorus traffic demands require other routes to be in place a soon as possible. While a third bridge farther north is currently under construction, yet another tunnel crossing is coming to the end of construction and is planned to be in service by December 2016. Being implemented under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, Istanbul Strait Road Tunnel Project (ISRTP, the Project) has been under the spotlight not only because of its distinctive technical characteristics but also because of its robust business model, exacting financial and legal arrangements, diverse stakeholders and challenging organizational management structure. The following paragraphs offer an overall view of the Project from inception to where it stands now and extend to the imminent operational phase, touching lightly on all major aspects of this challenging journey."

"The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), commonly known as Superfund, mandates evaluation of remediation alternative using nine criteria: (1) overall protection of human health and the environment, (2) compliance with ARARs (applicable or relevant and appropriate standards), (3) long-term effectiveness and permanence, (4) reduction of toxicity, mobility or volume, (5) short-term effectiveness, (6) implementability, (7) cost, (8) state acceptance, and (9) community acceptance. Many states have adopted these or similar criteria for remedy selection under state laws. Although not explicitly addressed in the CERCLA criteria, consideration of sustainability can be incorporated into these criteria. This paper explores how sustainability can be evaluated for remedy selection using the CERCLA criteria. INTRODUCTION Sustainability considerations can be incorporated into all phases of site remediation: • Site investigation (remedial investigation). • Remedy selection. • Remedial design. • Remediation construction. • Operations, maintenance, and monitoring. This paper focuses on remedy selection. Many have looked at remedy selection using sustainability criteria. However, CERCLA and corresponding State programs require remedy selection using mandatory criteria. This paper shows how sustainability can be explicitly considered using the mandatory criteria. REVIEW OF CERCLA CRITERIA First, we review the definitions of the CERCLA criteria. We then explore how sustainability criteria can be fit into the CERCLA criteria. Overall Protection of Human Health and the Environment This criterion addresses the degree to which each alternative is protective of human health and the environment, considering both long-term and short-term risks. Overall protectiveness is a ""threshold"" criterion, in that alternatives that do not achieve adequate protection of human health or the environment are eliminated from further consideration. Evaluation of this criterion is derived from the evaluation of the other criteria (e.g., long-term effectiveness and permanence, and short-term effectiveness). It is not an independent criterion, but more a summary of the overall evaluation."

Webster's dictionary nearly equates portland cement with its current primary definition of cement. Although such equation may be a triumph of common usage, the confusion between the terms cement and concrete unfortunately is very widespread. Full definition of cement properly would extend to many substances, but for purposes of this chapter cement is restricted to varieties of portland cement including portland-pozzolan cement. Among the usually recited historical notes concerning cement is that it was developed by the Romans. Their use of cement in the great structures of Rome, and even in the far comers of their Empire, such as Hadrian's Wall in the north of England, testifies to the antiquity of a major cement industry. From English sources we know of John Smeaton's carefully proportioned hydraulic cement mixed in 1756 and of Joseph Aspdin's patented cement to which, in 1824, he gave the name portland cement. (He claimed that his cement mortar looked like the famous dimension limestone quarried from the Isle of Portland on England's south coast.) The year 1971 marked the centennial of portland cement manufacture in the United States. A fair historical account of the many real contributors to the cement industry since 1756 unfortunately would be too extensive for this chapter. Development of rotary kiln practice and burning at higher temperatures clearly was the major move into today's technology. Cement manufacture is the processing of selected and prepared mineral raw materials to produce the synthetic, mineral mixture (clinker) that can be ground to a powder having the specified chemical composition and physical properties of cement. Cement making incorporates a number of distinct steps, but it is characterized by the key pyroprocessing (or burning) step, which brings about the necessary changes in the raw materials. This pyroprocessing is a chemical process. Conversion of large volumes of mineral raw materials into specification-controlled cement at relatively low cost is the objective. Statistics on the cement industry are of uneven quality. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) is the principal collector of available data. These statistics can be only as good as the quality of information supplied by the reporting companies. The data perhaps most often questioned relates to productive capacity of the industry. The questions submitted by USBM are valid, nevertheless, and the information gained from them, as good as is available, is what is generally used. The Portland Cement Association also is a source of much quality information. In analyzing cement industry production rates, it is well to keep in mind that measurement of raw materials requires the reader to recognize that approximately 1.6 t of dry raw materials are required to make 1 t of clinker. This number can vary depending on the amount of kiln dust wasted. Also that to produce 1 t of portland cement required .94 to .96 t of clinker, the remainder being gypsum or anhydrite. A ton of masonry cement or pozzolanic cement re- quires considerably less clinker.

To put coal in its proper perspective as a source of energy for electric power production, we must first compare it to other energy sources. A report of the Atomic Industrial Forum dated February 1958 records a number of authoritative though widely varying predictions. The most optimistic of these states that by 1968 there will be a total U.S. capacity of about 6000 megawatts of nuclear power, if growth continues at the present rate. Other sources indicate over 200,000 megawatts of total electrical capacity in utility plants by 1968. This is only 3% nuclear. Therefore, 97% of our total power production will be from non-nuclear energy. Fig. 1 shows the distribution of energy sources of electric utility product- ion in the U.S. as reported by the Federal Power Commission in 1954. Note that less than one quarter of the total is hydro and about one half of the total is coal. For 1957, the Edison Electric Institute reports that of the total steam- electric generation in the U. S., 68.6% was by coal, 7.9% was by oil and 23.5% was by gas. This is an increase for coal and a decrease for oil and gas in those three years. Thus we can conclude that two-thirds of the steam-electric power in the U. S. is now generated by coal. Fig. 2 shows the major markets for coal for 1947 vs 1957. The greatest in- crease has been in the electric utility market, where it has more than doubled in the ten years. One-third of the total coal produced goes to the utilities which now represent coal?s major market. Utilities used 160 million tons of coal in 1957, and the estimated quantity for 1967 is 275 million tons, and for 1977 is 525 million tons. It is predicted that 85% of steam-electric power will be generated by coal in 1975.

Some people in the mining-engineering field mistakenly believe that mine-water management primarily revolves around the treatment of mine waters that fail to meet applicable water-quality standards. While water-quality control is undoubtedly important, it represents only a fraction of what constitutes comprehensive site-wide, minewater management. A more holistic perspective recognizes that it also involves mine dewatering to maintain safe and workable conditions, securing sufficient water supply for operations, strategically handling surface water within and surrounding the openpit to prevent issues like flooding, developing robust post-closure plans to mitigate long-term environmental effects, and proactively minimizing any adverse impacts on local communities and ecosystems. This article provides a brief overview of topics that fall within the concepts of mine-water management. The focus is on openpit mines, as they are generally larger than underground mines. The management of mine water is highly dependent on local and regional climate such as tropical, desert or temperate climate. Each climatic setting has its own unique challenges, but there are also commonalities.

Novel chemicals that can be used for increasing the efficiency of fine coal dewatering were developed at Virginia Tech. Reagent A was tested on three different coal samples in laboratory vacuum filtration tests. These included flotation products from Middle Fork plant, Elkview Mining Company, and CONSOL, Inc. The tests conducted with the Middle Fork coal sample (100 mesh x 0) showed that cake moisture can be reduced by more than 10% beyond what can be achieved without using dewatering aid. This improvement was achieved at 1 lb/ton of Reagent A and 0.1 inch cake thickness. At 0.5 inches of cake thickness, the improvement was limited to 8% at the same reagent dosage. The results obtained with the Elkview coal (28 mesh x 0) showed similar advantages in using the novel dewatering aid. Depending on the reagent dosage, cake thickness, drying cycle time and temperature, it was possible to reduce the cake moisture to 12 to 14% range. In addition to achieving lower cake moisture, the use of Reagent A substantially decreased the cake formation time, indicating that the reagent improves the kinetics of dewatering. The test results obtained with CON SOL coal were not as good as with the other coals tested in the present work, which may be attributed to possible oxidation and/or contamination.

This paper deals with the search for the best practical means of storing sulphide bearing tailings, where there is no residual excess of carbonate material. It is the common experience that the sulphide content decomposes, with the aid of bacterial action, and the resulting sulphuric acid escapes, along with any heavy metal solutes, through embankments that are usually porous to some degree. The problem is typified in the tailings of the uranium operations of Elliot Lake, Ontario, where mining started some 20 years ago. The approach to tailings disposal paralleled the practice for other hydrometallurgical plants treating gold and base metal ores. Impoundment areas were designed to retain solids, and a clear and neutral overflow was considered satisfactory practice. Now experience has shown that these areas, some idle for over a dozen years, release acids, in seepage and overflows, to an unacceptable degree. To protect natural water courses neutralizing plants are operated wherever required. Lime slurry is fed continuously into the tailings outflows in a quantity sufficient to raise the pH to 8.5 and precipitate heavy metals that may be in solution. The objection to this procedure is that the plants will require servicing indefinitely, unless a better remedy is found.

Establishing geotechnical baselines on soft ground projects that require the use of closed-face tunnel boring machines (TBMs) is difficult. It is hard to see the face when mining and the excavated material is combined and mixed, all of which makes baseline quantifications challenging. In an attempt to meet underlying objectives of minimizing bidder contingencies, allocating or sharing risks and paying for conditions only if they occur, nongeotechnical baselines (i.e., functional baselines) have been developed. These have been used on the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority?s Clean Rivers (DCCR) Blue Plains Tunnel (BPT) project. This article examines the development of such functional baselines and how they were implemented on the BPT project.

The velocity of detonation (VOD) is a significant property considered when rating an explosive, and it is quantified as a confined or unconfined velocity. The confined velocity is more significant as explosives are usually used under a definite degree of confinement. This study evaluates the stepwise increment of the air-deck volume from 10 to 30 percent, and its effect on the VOD. The VOD estimation in the 172-mm-diameter explosive column was conducted using the Dáutriche technique. The air-deck volume increment has an attenuation effect on the steady-state VOD, and detonation failure is high at 30 percent air-deck volume. This attenuation effect is directly linked to the explosive’s rating and efficacy. The air-decking approach in this study is different from conventional air-decking techniques in that it does not employ the fixed blasthole parameters, air-deck volume and specific VOD.

At the Mount Isa mine, Mount Isa, Qld., Australia, sublevel open-stope mining is used for copper ore while both sublevel open-stope and cut-and-fill methods are used for the silver-lead-zinc ores. Production in 1979¬80 was 4 730 000 t (5,200,000 st) copper ore and 2 590 000 t (2,850,000 st) of lead ore. The deepest mine level currently is 960 m below the surface. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size, Shape, and Dip The mine is located in the valley of the Leichhardt River in Lower Proterozoic sediments of the Mount Isa group. The regional strike of the sediments is north¬south and they have a persistent westerly dip of about 1.1 rad (65°). In the mine area, the Mount Isa group comprises a sequence of alternating bands of dolomitic shales and siltstones some 3.2 km (2 miles) in width. It is bounded on the east by greenstones and quartzose sediments of the Eastern Creek volcanics, and on the west by the Mount Isa fault, west of which occur schists and other metamorphic rocks. The ore bodies as currently known at Mount Isa are restricted to the Urquhart shale, a formation of thinly bedded pyritic, dolomitic, and volcanic shales some 1070 m (3500 ft) thick. Towards the top of the Mount Isa group sediments, copper and silver-lead-zinc ore bod¬ies occur as contiguous but discrete entities and are mined and treated separately (see Figs. I and 2). Argentiferous galena, sphalerite, pyrite, and minor associated sulfides occur in distinct concordant bands throughout the Urquhart shales. Wherever these bands are grouped together in sufficient density they constitute silver-lead-zinc ore bodies with widths varying up to 36.6 m (120 ft). Other mineralized bands are common in intervening beds. Individual ore bodies persist for many hundreds of meters concordant with the strike and dip of the enclosing shales. Intersections of these beds with fold axes provide local zones of enrichment but otherwise the mineral content of the ore bodies varies only slightly throughout the extent of the dip and strike. Chalcopyrite is the only important primary copper mineral. It occurs in association with pyrite and pyrrhotite as disseminated flocks and as vein fillings throughout irregularly shaped zones of folded, brecciated, and re¬crystallized Urquhart shale. These zones, which are lo¬cally termed "silica-dolomite" bodies, are broadly transgressive to the shale bedding and confine all significant copper mineralization to the virtual exclusion of silver¬lead-zinc mineralization. In some areas, the downward percolation of acidic water through faults and shears has caused extensive leaching of the coarse-grained carbon¬ates to depths in excess of 610 m (2000 ft), but most of the silica-dolomite remains unleached and the ground is competent. The majority of lead ore being mined is north of the main shaft pillar (R62, U62) area. "R.E. Janes Gravel Co. is an aggregates producer is located along a paleo-channel of the Ogallala formation (locally known as the Slaton Channel) approximately 48.3 km (30 miles) southeast of Lubbock, TX. In an attempt to beneficiate the 25.4-mm (1-in.) concrete aggregate product, a log washer was installed in the processing line to liberate and remove fines (clay) from the finished product. The introduction of this extra cleaning step increased fines in the finished product, exacerbating the original problem. Several other processing options were investigated before a geological analysis was undertaken to try and define the lithology of the formation and formation characteristics in an attempt to alleviate this problem.Initial assessmentsThe mined resources are mid-Miocene to early Pliocene (16-4 mya) in age and is the eastern exposure of the Ogallala formation of the Southern High Plains escarpment. The Ogallala formation consists of coarse-grained alluvial sediments in paleovalley channel ways from the Rocky Mountains with fine Aeolian and paleosol deposition on the uplands across the High Plains region of the United States. Locally, these Rocky Mountain sediments from New Mexico were transported and deposited in a paleochannel that is approximately 0.805 km (0.5 miles) wide and 15.25 to 18.3 m (50 to 60 ft) in depth. As this channel cut across the Southern High Plains it eroded local rock sources of Late Cretaceous limestones and Triassic sandstones and mudstones incorporating them into the younger Ogallala depositional sequence.Depositional historyThe channel currently being mined is a nontypical Ogallala deposit. The Ogallala in the panhandle of Texas is divided into two units, the Couch and the Bridwell. The Couch is the older of the two and exhibits alluvial sedimentation of thicker and larger gravel (up to 76.2 mm or 3 in.) deposits fining upward to Aeolian sedimentation and thick friable caliche deposits. The Bridwell overlies the Couch and is characterized by alluvial sedimentation, a distinctive red tint and smaller gravel components (typically no larger than 25.4 mm or 1 in.) fining upward to Aeolian sedimentation and thick, well-indurated caliche cap. The Slaton Channel divides these two units and shares lithologic components of both, yet is lithologically distinct due to its Cretaceous Age limestone gravels that can be < 3.66 m (12 ft) in size. Caliche/calcrete is a calcareous (CaCO3) deposit that forms in the B horizon of soils as a rain water leachate of CaCO3 from the upper A horizon."

Underground mining environments bring with them occupational health and safety issues with some severe dangers, such as mine explosions. During such events, miners may escape using main access openings or find a safe haven like a refuge alternative (RA) to wait and be rescued and evacuated to the surface. In this paper, RAs are explained with their early and current applications. A classification as permanent and portable is detailed, depending on conditions and abilities. This classification is followed by the utilization and survivability of RAs with the requirements and recommendations of the main mining countries. Based on the utilization and survivability constraints, basic human requirements, waiting for a rescue team, and the required physical specifications of RAs during the events are analyzed in detail for various countries with their regulations. Among these, the specification of resistance to explosion is discussed in particular, and studies in the literature are examined in terms of structural deformation.

INTRODUCTION The U. S. mining industry experienced a severe recession in the early 1980&apos;s. This resulted in the realization that the domestic mining industry had to compete on a global basis and only the strong or the low-cost producers would survive. The economic viability of a mining company not only depended on maximizing mineral recovery but also on its ability to do so at minimum cost. Companies had to become more productive not only by cutting costs, but also by developing and/or evaluating new technologies in existing or new plants. Several innovative concepts, including in-pit crushing and conveying, fine crushing, improved classification equipment, flotation, column flotation, pressure filtration, etc., have been developed in recent years. This paper addresses the impact of new flotation concepts and equipment on mill design. MILL DESIGN PHILOSOPHY Modern mill design, especially for large capacity plants, has its foundation in minimizing capital and operating costs. Capital costs can be minimized by minimizing the various components of the capital cost: infrastructure, equipment, instrumentation, structural, initial spare parts costs, etc. All these costs are minimized by simplifying the mill design and/or process flowsheet. The simplified process flowsheet, where applicable, consists of a single stage primary crusher followed by a semiautogeneous - ball mill grinding circuit to produce feed for a flotation circuit. Multiple flotation circuits have been eliminated in most cases. These concepts minimize the cost and encourage the use of large capacity equipment while maintaining optimum metallurgical recovery. The philosophy of mill modernization/modification is generally driven by the desire to increase the mill capacity within the limits of the existing mill building. This need is facilitated by using large size flotation equipment and eliminating multiple parallel flotation circuits in order to minimize capital and operating costs. Conventional flotation machine development has paralleled this mill design philosophy. FLOTATION CELL DESIGN Since froth flotation has been the most widely used separation process for over half a century, one would expect that it would be possible to design and select flotation machines for specific applications based on scientific principles. But this has not been the case. Best judgment, experience and personal prejudice have played a key role in equipment selection. These factors, along with the difficulty of evaluating new concepts in commercial plants, has slowed progress in implementation and commercialization of innovative ideas and/or equipment. Conventional Flotation There have been no major technological advances in conventional flotation cell design in recent years. A recent flotation cell survey indicates that &apos;larger flotation cells are still the order of the day.”(1) A comprehensive review of design of flotation machines indicate that they have been mechanically redesigned and are generally simpler and easier to maintain and less expensive to manufacture. (2,3) The approximate chronological development of conventional cells from the 25 cubic foot cells to the 3000 cubic foot cells, which were recently installed at the Copperton concentrator of Utah Copper, is given in Table 1. Larger flotation cells are the obvious choice for new plants or plants looking for expansion because of the following reasons: • They have lower capital cost per unit volume • Installation costs are generally lower because fewer units require less space • Maintenance costs are lower because of fewer mechanisms • Power requirements (HP/ton dry feed) are generally lower • with increased flotation cell size as illustrated in Table 2 [Table 1. And other technological growth takes place far away from the public view but can have as much of an impact on our daily life as does shopping at Amazon or connecting with friends on social media.At the “THRIVE 2018, Innovations Advancing Mining” conference presented by SME on Sept. 27 at the Sheraton Pittsburgh Hotel at Station Square in Pittsburgh, PA, the focus was on innovation and how it affects the global mining industry.More than 100 people were on hand for the inaugural event, and they were treated to a unique program that focused on the cutting-edge innovations that will carry the mining industry into the future while increasing safety and productivity along the way.2018 SME President Barbara Arnold was the driving force behind the conference and put together the technical program with a focus on innovation through the entire mining life cycle and into the future. Talks ranged from more efficient and safer ways to extract minerals to some of the most advanced end uses of minerals and metals, including the use of 3D printing to create precision parts for machines and humans from advanced metal alloys.“We need to adapt new technologies to our industry and develop additional technologies as we provide materials and metals for infrastructure and energy development in the United States, around the globe, and to the Moon and beyond,” Arnold told Mining Engineering. “Our inaugural THRIVE conference sets the stage for these innovations to be applied and to continue to be developed. Our mining industry can only continue to thrive with these advances.”"

When systematically compared to other engineering fields, mining engineering is distinctive in 1) having a total systems concern. 2) dealing with encumbered space and 3) requiring full spectrum practice. The total systems concern results from having to design and then co-ordinate in space and time several major systems: excavating and bulk handling, ground control, life support and normal support. This requirement favors a generalist rather than a specialist approach. In coping with encumbered space especially in underground coal mining, the uncertainties of geologic conditions are compounded by tightness, roughness, remoteness and hazards. Into this difficult setting the total systems * complex is "stuffed," adding congestion and interference. Because of significant ground deterioration a flexible "rapid in-out" approach is usually vital to mining. Full spectrum practice arises from the need to manage, as well as to plan and design, a labor intensive operation. Since market conditions can also fluctuate most aspects of administration are needed in many respects, mining engineering functions relative to civil engineering in a way similar to industrial to mechanical engineering, with encumbered space being crucial. On this basis stress is placed on: 1) personal relations, 2) field work and 3) entrepreneurship, viewing time as money. Specific recommendations for improving engineering, safety and management and leadership are made. Since most new deposits are marginal, by applying these recommendations with high technology they could possibly now be mined on a widespread basis.

An 8-foot tall horseshoe adit tunnel located within an abutment of the Mount Morris Dam in Mount Morris, NY required repair of a failed reinforced concrete liner. The adit tunnel is entirely founded within highly weathered shale bedrock units, which induced unloading stress on the original tunnel liner. An epoxy-impregnated carbon fiber fabric wrap manufactured by Sika was chosen to repair the failed adit tunnel liner. Kilduff Underground Engineering completed the design of the tunnel repair utilizing both empirical and numerical methods. Merco Engineering Contractors completed the injection of chemical grout and repair liner installation.

The purpose of this paper is to present a design procedure for the quantitative estimation of support load requirements in underground mines. Emphasis is upon the basic features of support behavior common to a large variety of support systems-bolts, timber sets, stope fill, steel arches, concrete liners and so forth. A strong reliance is placed upon fundamental principles and modern computing techniques for their quantitative implementation. Example problems illustrate the approach. Where artificial support is required, the ground in the vicinity of the face usually stands unsupported long enough for the support to be installed. At the time of installation, the load transferred to the support from the adjacent rock is essentially zero, although in some cases there may be an initial set load, for example, from timber blocking. With the passage of time and advance of the face, ground motion loads the supports. If the support system is properly designed, then the additional loading poses no threat to the safety and productivity of operations. If not, then difficulties may arise including high maintenance costs, hazardous work conditions and reduced productivity. Of course, over-design can be equally wasteful. Quantitative estimation of support loads is therefore essential to overall efficiency in mining.
