The existing methods for recycling lithium-ion batteries present initial hurdles related to the safe handling and preparation of the batteries to avert potential explosions. Submerging batteries in sodium chloride (NaCl) solution has become an acceptable industrial practice. However, the use of NaCl to discharge lithium-ion batteries rusts the batteries’ cases and releases metals which impacts the downstream processes that involve selective recovery of Li. This study aimed to determine the optimal concentrations and pH range of NaCl for the discharge of lithium-ion batteries for the purpose of minimizing the leach of Al, Co, Cu, Fe, Li, and Ni.

Since our time is very limited, I would like to relate to you as best as I can a few important areas that I think may be helpful. 1.) The Real Difference between Dense Phase and Dilute Phase Pneumatic Conveying: Within the many variations of so called Dense Phase conveying, it is often difficult to determine to what degree a system is Dense Phase or if, in fact, it is a Dense Phase system at all. A system that appears and is generally known to be Dense Phase can under certain operating conditions perform as a Dilute Phase system. If, for instance, a high pressure system, which is generally a Dense Phase system, operates at 60 PSIG, say 4 atmospheres, utilizes enough air volume, the conveying velocity will easily exceed the normal design velocity of a typical Dilute Phase system. Now, on the other hand, a low pressure system which we will term a Dilute Phase system, operating at 15 PSIG; say 1 atmosphere, can convey a given product at well below the saltation velocity, like a Dense Phase system.

As mining fronts converge in sill pillar extraction, the mine seismic hazard can be significantly altered and large seismic events have been known to occur. This study used common seismological tools to analyze the extraction of highly stressed sills from two deep Canadian mines with the objective of characterizing the rock mass failure process and relation to large seismic events. The approach treated a sill pillar as a mine-scale failure process, meaning the temporal and spatial analysis scales needed to exist on a similar scale to a significant part of the mine. The temporal analysis scale overlapped with the entire mining sequence, included several years of data to establish long term change in the characteristics of rock mass failure. The spatial analysis scale included the rock mass surrounding a large part of the convergent mining sequence. To accommodate the large spatial and temporal scales, the highest magnitude 2% of events in the dataset were analyzed. Similar results were shown for sill pillars in both mines. Changes in event location, time, magnitude, energy index and apparent volume were similar to expected behavior of rock failure. Indications of strain hardening and strain softening were observed in the sills. The hardening period was characterized by a high rate of small events, high energy index and low apparent volume, giving an indication of high stress and low rock yield. The softening phase was characterized by a decrease in the rate of small events concurrent with an increase in the rate of large events, low energy index and high apparent volume, indicative of release of stress and increase in deformation. Large magnitude seismicity was strongly related to the softening phase, with several Nuttli magnitude 3.0+ events occurring shortly after the transition from hardening to softening failure regimes. Sill failure was indicated by consistently low EI and low levels of seismicity and seismic hazard in the sill pillar.

This article, though not common feature material, should be of reader interest. Goth made this presentation as the keynote address at the 19th Annual Intermountain Minerals Conference in Vail, CO, in August. Introduction Working backward, what is an LDC? LDC stands for Less Developed Country. LDCs play a dynamic role in world supply and demand of basic materials. They occupy an equally important position in international marketing and finance. I will explain later some of my concerns with LDCs. First, I want to address an issue I think is of equal or even greater concern. Mining and High Technology Unfortunately, many people believe that America must make a decision now between being a smokestack-based economy or a high-technology-based economy. Some would have you believe that smokestack America is dead. Our only option is to turn to high technology, in a manner similar to countries such as Japan. Presumably, when we talk about high-technology industries we envision organizations that came into being within the last decade or so and incorporate microelectronics, biotechnology, and interconnected computers. The entire workforce is clad in lab coats and there are few employees in proportion to the work performed. High-technology industry is not labor-intensive work thanks to the efficient robots used. On the opposite side are smoke-stack industries, that we presume include the older, basic industries such as mining, agriculture, iron and steel manufacturing, ship-building, auto manufacturing, and nearly all forms of construction. These industries are judged to be labor intensive, requiring unsophisticated and untrained employees who succeed by the sweat of their brows rather than by advanced degrees in mathematics and physics. If these are indeed the presumptions about high technology versus smokestack industries, then I submit that those presumptions are a disaster. They are wrong and far from the truth. Smokestack industries, such as mining and the others mentioned, are indeed much older than some of the recently founded high-tech industries. But this does not mean that those smokestack industries are low-technology industries. On the contrary, American agricul¬ture is a very high-technology industry whose crop yields are the envy of the entire world. Mining uses virtually all of the advances available through modern technology. Far too many opinion leaders still envision mining as Humphrey Bogart and John Huston in the movie Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Yet there are many who hold the opinion that our basic industries are dead and that this country's future depends on specialized high-technology industries and services. That is tantamount to announcing we will continue to build space shuttle vehicles, but we no longer need launching pads and landing fields. The point is, we should not be wasting our time talking about "new" industries and "old" industries. We should devote our time and effort to industries that are effective and efficient in meeting our needs, in contrast to industries that are not effective and efficient in meeting our needs. Less Developed Countries That leads me to some of the problems I perceive with policies regarding the previously mentioned LDCs - Less Developed Countries. Far too many people do not realize that many of the smokestack industries being lauded in Less Developed Countries are being operated at a loss and to the detriment of worldwide industry. When a solid-liquid mixture is conveyed through a pipe,' four hydrodynamic conditions may develop depending upon the properties of the transporting medium, the properties of the transported material, the properties of the pipeline and the flow characteristics. They are classified as homogeneous flow, heterogeneous flow, intermediate flow and saltation. Heterogeneous flow, which is the subject of the present analysis, occurs when solid particles are coarse, of high density, and the mean velocity of the flow is relatively low, such that the combination allows the establishment of a pronounced concentration gradient in the cross-section of the pipe. In this type of system the suspended matter does not change the rheological properties of the conveying fluid, and solid and fluid phases behave somewhat separately. In recent years much work has been directed toward gaining more insight into the hydrodynamics of heterogeneous flow (1,2,3,4,5,) However, almost all knowledge obtained is empirical in nature and limited in scope. Much effort has been extended to collect experimental information on the energy losses associated with systems of slurry flow (6-13) The work of Durand and Condolios(14,15) represents one of the most extensive experimentations in this field. Through systematic test runs, the effects of the major flow-parameters were studied one at a time. From the results, they concluded empirically that:

The integrity of unconventional shale gas well casings positioned in the abutment pillar of a longwall mine could be jeopardized by longwall-induced deformations. Under such scenarios, the surrounding fracture networks could provide pathways for gas flow into the mine, creating safety concerns. To provide recommendations for developing guidelines that ensure a safe coexistence of longwall mining and unconventional shale gas production, this study uses a discrete fracture network (DFN) model to evaluate the impact of parameters that could affect potential shale gas flow into the mine in the event of a casing breach. These parameters are evaluated using a conceptualized DFN realization that is representative of the fractured zone in the overburden, and the range of parameter variations are within values validated with field measurements.

The City of New Haven is proposing to construct Downtown Storm Sewer Infrastructure Improvement project to mitigate on-going stormwater flooding in the Long Wharf District. The proposed project includes a 200 cubic feet per second (cfs) stormwater pump station; and a 914 meter (3,000 linear feet) long tunnel segment with an internal diameter of 2.1 meters (84-inches). The tunnel alignment will cross under the Long Warf railyard and then continue parallel to the Vison Trail Route. This paper presents the local geology and subsurface conditions, as well as discusses the major project challenges and risks including construction in soft marine soils and encountering remnants of the former wharf.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is adding a third fan to supplement its two existing main fans. The third fan will operate in parallel with the two existing fans. An engineering analysis conducted in 1995 identified the need for improved system availability and efficiency. The WIPP, located near Carlsbad, NM, is a US Department of Energy (DOE), Carlsbad Area Office, facility that is designed to permanently dispose of US defense-generated transuranic waste in a deep, bedded salt deposit. Engineers at the WIPP performed a feasibility analysis for modifying, supplementing or replacing its two main mine fans. Since the centrifugal fans were installed in 1988, multiple operational and performance concerns have been identified. A comprehensive engineering study was conducted (McDaniel et al., 1997) to identify and quantify operational concerns, evaluate possible alternatives and recommend an optimum solution. The study indicated that adding a third single-duty centrifugal fan similar to the two existing fans and equipping that fan with Inlet Van Controls (IVCs) was the best choice. This alternative provided the most desirable combination of operational readiness and improving system performance. The fan installation project accommodates several operational and scheduling con¬straints. WIPP was scheduled to receive waste in May 1998. This milestone is proceeded by an operational readiness review. Fan installation could not be allowed to compromise the WIPP 's ability to declare facility readiness. Therefore, operational disruptions during the system tie-in had to be minimized. All engineering for the project has been com¬pleted, and physical modifications were begun in July 1997. The project was completed in 1998.

Jigging is a process of particle stratification in which the particle re- arrangement results from an alternate expansion and compaction of a bed of particles by pulsating fluid flow. The vertical direction of fluid flow is reversed periodically. The rearrangement results in layers of particles that are arranged by increasing density from top to bottom of the bed. This response, developed from the many and continuously varying forces acting upon the particles, permits a solid-solid separation more related to particle density and less to particle size than any other "hydraulic-type" process. The stratification is usually carried out in a rectangular, open-top container called a jig, in which the mass of particles (termed a "bed") is supported on a perforated base through which the water flows in alternating directions. The coal particles, in addition to the vertically expanded and compacted bed motion, move continuously, horizontally across the supporting screen. Following the particle stratification, the particle bed is physically "cut" at a desired horizontal particle density plane to separate the desired clean coal product from the more dense refuse. The jig system includes means for continuously introducing the raw coal and for moving the water through the coal bed in a controllable manner, as well as for separating and removing the stratified particles from the system as two or more product streams. In coal preparation, this highly versatile unit operation is applied preferably to a wide size range of particles with top sizes up to 8 in. (20 cm) rather than to a closely sized fraction. In gravity ranges, the process has been applied to gold particles with a density of 19.3 and to coal particles having densities less than 1.30. Single jig washers have capacities from 5 (4.6) to greater than 700 tph (637 t/h) of feed coal. The separation results attainable by jigging have favored this unit operation as optimum for creating a clean coal product as required by steam coal specifications. Al- though the jig is used in preparing coals which are difficult to separate, its limitations to achieve both quality products and high recovery are being recognized in comparison with heavy media-based processes which make sharper separations from feeds having high "near-gravity" contents. The accu- racy of the densimetric stratification in the upper portions of the jig bed are less precise. It follows that coals with more than 10% near-gravity material

Ore sorting is an emerging technology in mineral processing that can produce a significant impact on the total mining and processing economics. The technology is capable of preconcentrating an ore based on differences in the mineralogical characteristics, which can include color, brightness, transparency, size, shape, density or near-infrared response. The current practice of conducting an ore sorting test typically requires large amounts of materials to be sent to a commercial testing facility, which is expensive and time-consuming. Here, we present a novel method to simulate commercial ore sorting on a laboratory scale using a rare earth ore.

Measures of metallurgical performance, such as recovery rates or mass balances, are frequently based on point estimates of operating conditions in the system of interest. Because the processes being measured are dynamic, a range of uncertainty accompanies each measurement; this uncertainty is reflected in the accuracy with which the calculated result describes the true metallurgical performance. In stochastic modeling, a range of probable values is used in place of a point estimate to describe each variable. The calculated result takes the form of a distribution, delineating both the magnitude and probability of potential outcomes.

A ferrous chloride-oxygen leaching system was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines as a means of re-covering copper and silver from a sulfide concentrate that had been pretreated to remove a majority of the antimony. The pretreated concentrate contained Cu, Ag, Pb, Zn, Sb, and As. Parameters affecting metal extraction, such as temperature, pressure, amount of ferrous chloride, and initial hydrogen ion concentration, were studied. Copper extraction of 98 pct was achieved by leaching 4 hours at 40 pounds per?square inch gage (psig) and 1000 ?C. Copper was recovered from leach solutions by cementation with iron, and the resulting ferrous chloride was recycled. Leaching the residue with cyanide followed by electrowinning recovered 99.7 pct of the silver. Iron, Sb, As, Pb, and S reported to the tails.

A system based on seismic techniques has been developed to detect and locate men trapped underground following a mine disaster. Both theoretical and field studies have been used to generate models to predict the performance of the system. For a strong source, it is almost certain that the miner's signal will be detected if the geophone array can be positioned over a likely area of entrapment. After signal processing, it is highly likely that the location of the miner can be determined within an accuracy of 100 ft (30.5 m). The system is presently operational in a state of readiness in the event of a mine disaster.

According to a 2000 NIOSH report, about 100 million rock anchors are installed annually in coal mines in the USA. Most coal mines have conditions that are conducive to corrosion of the rock anchor and ancillaries (such as plates), yet the effect of this on the performance of the anchors has not been adequately researched and its effects are not understood or quantified in the USA. There is considerable research into corrosion in civil engineering applications on surface and underground but the corrosion of coal mine rock anchors is not necessarily the same because: ? In underground civil structures, water ingress is usually stopped as part of the construction process. ? Many rock bolts in mines are only partially resin grouted leaving part of the reinforcing member exposed to corrosive conditions. All cable bolts in coal mines are only partially resin grouted. ? Even when mine bolts are fully grouted, shrinkage cracks occur and the rock stresses can change due to adjacent mining that can cause the resin column around the bolt to fracture further under external shear or tensile stresses. Most coal mines therefore have ideal conditions for bolt corrosion.
