"INTRODUCTION Freeport-McMoRan is a leading international natural resources company that operates large, long-lived, geographically diverse assets with significant proven and probable reserves of copper, gold, molybdenum, cobalt, oil and natural gas. Freeport-McMoRan is the world’s largest publicly traded copper producer and largest producer of molybdenum. The Sierrita mine is an open pit truck and shovel operation from which copper and molybdenum are produced. An important key to Sierrita’s success lies in their ability to realize their plans in the field. In certain circumstances, the mine plans are not achieved, and the operation fails to meet its targets which is an issue revealed in reconciliation reports. This technical session discusses the methodologies and procedures used at Sierrita to monitor the implementation of the mine plans, measure the performance of the operation and reduce the variance between plan and actual. Ensuring the operation stays on target is vital so mine productivity and profitability can attain its maximum potential. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Sierrita mining complex is located in Pima County, approximately 20 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona as shown in Figure 1. The first mining claims at Sierrita date back to the late 1800s while underground mining activities started in the early 1900s. However, open pit development of Sierrita began more than 50 years ago to become the modern mining complex it is today. In 2009, Freeport-McMoRan purchased the adjacent Twin Buttes copper mine, providing significant synergies in the Sierrita minerals district. This venture included the potential for expanded mining activities, operations growth for mining copper and molybdenum, and reclamation activity. It should be noted that in addition to copper and molybdenum, the Sierrita mine produces rhenium which is a rare and highly value metal. The ore deposit contains oxide and sulfide mineralization. The oxide ore is delivered to the leach process while the sulfide ore is routed to the crusher and mill circuit 4,700 jobs on Arizona’s economy Freeport-McMoRan partners with the communities near Sierrita to provide programs that contribute to their sustainability"

The Jones Hill prospect is a Proterozoic age, volcanogenic, semi-massive to massive sulfide deposit. The deposit is located on the western edge of the Pecos greenstone belt in the southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico. The prospect is found in a block (West Block) of meta- igneous rocks, primarily diabase, metavolcanic rocks, and metasedimentary rocks (fig. 1). This assemblage is typical of lithologies found in the greenstone belt. Metamorphic grade is greenschist to lower amphibolite. The West Block is bound- ed on the west by Proterozoic age (1.7-1.4 b.y. by Rb/Sr), granitic plutons collectively called the Embudo granite, and on the east by Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, primarily sandstones, shales, and limestones of Mississippian and Pennsylvanian age. The mineralization occurs in a single horizon which has been overturned and cut into two blocks by a high-angle reverse fault (fig. 2). The mineralized horizon is found at the contact of felsic metavolcanic and rnetavolcaniclastic rocks with overlying intermediate metasedimentary rocks. The local stratigraphic sec- tion from bottom to top is as follows: 1) porphyroblastic quartz- sericite schist (originally a rhyolitic, subvolcanic intrusive); 2) quartz-sericite-chlorite-biotite schist (felsic metavolcanic and metavolcaniclastic rocks); 3) chlorite-talc-biotite-sulfide schist (altered felsic metavolcanic rocks); 4) carbonate-quartz-sulfide [ ] chlorite-tremolite-talc schist (mineralized exhalite); 5) quartz- chlorite schist (silicified tuff); and 6) amphibole-chlorite-feldspar- biotite schist (occasional mafic to intermediate metavolcanic flows).

A program has been carried out over the last two years to apply the technology of High Gradient Magnetic Separation (HGMS) to the problem of mineral beneficiation and specifically oxidized taconite iron ores. This program, supported by the RANN division of the National Science Foundation, has consisted of a laboratory program at the Francis Bitter National Magnet Lab- oratory at MIT and a pilot investigation at the Hanna Mining Company Research Laboratory. 1 The laboratory tests were conducted using several batch type high gradient separators and a continuous separator with a rotating matrix which was constructed at the beginning of the program. The high field magnets available at F.B.N.M.L. were used for investigations above 10 kG but most of the test work was performed in the range of this field value. Ore samples were contributed by several iron ore companies and consisted of oxidized taconites having goethite and hematite as their principal components.

The line scan video photometer is a personal computer (PC) based, software-driven instrument which is used for the real time, on-line analysis of industrial process streams. The novelty of the instrument lies in the integration of its various components: (l) a true Red/Green/Blue (R/G/B) color video camera; (2) a unique, line-scan color sample and hold technique which provides a 4 to 20 mA analog signal to a commercial 12 bit analog to digital (A/D) converter; (3) software which converts data through a color absorbance algorithm to correlate elemental color to concentration; and (4) software-based control which utilizes color data, along with temperature and conductivity data to control process equipment. The photometer can be used for noninvasive analysis wherever color hues are representative of process variables such as chemical concentrations or mineralogy color reflectance. The line scan video photometer has been successfully demonstrated in solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) and ball mill circuits of copper producers.

One of the major problems in the exploitation of deep copper ore deposits in the Legnicko-Glogowski Copper Field is ground control and, in particular, roof control of the headings. The depth of copper deposits ranges from 600 to 1200 m. The parameters of ore-bearing rocks and the surrounding rocks show considerable variance of strength properties along the mining thickness (Fig. 1). The roof of the openings exploitation headings consists of dolomite-calciferous rocks. The roof strata consist of layers, the thickness of which vary from several centimeters to 0.6 m (sometimes to 1.0 m). These strata differ in strength and are characterized by igneous and sedimentary discontinuities. On the basis of studies in structure, properties and geological mining conditions of the roof strata in Polish copper mines, the method of roof classification has been developed. (1) This method uses the stability index "L" of the roof, calculated from [ ] The value of "t" ranges from 0, l to 0,8. Based on the value of "L", four classes of the roof (Table 1) corresponding to different degrees of fall hazard have been developed. The mining of copper ore deposit is carried out by a single lift room-and-pillar mining system or a two-stage room-and-pillar system with roof caving. (3, 4). The single lift room-and-pillar mining system is most often used. It consists in working of the deposit of 2.5 to 4.5 m mining thickness, 150-350 m long mining line, consisting of parallel room faces 6 m wide with pillars 5.7 or 16 m wide. As the mining line advances, cross-cuts joining individual rooms are made, thus forming support pillars 3x5, 7x7, 5x16, and 7x16 m (Fig. 2). The two-stage system (Fig. 3) mines the deposit with rooms 6 m wide into blocks 25 x 35 x 25 x 45 m. During the second step these pillars are worked with rooms and cross-cuts into pillars about 3 x 4 to 4 x 5 m (retreat mining). The pillars are crushed just before the fall of the roof. The maximum opening of workings in the two-step system is about 10 m, i.e. one belt entry and one row of bearing pillars. In single lift room-and-pillar systems it is about 35 m., i.e. three belt entries and three rows of bearing pillars. The support of the headings consists of expansion bolts 1.6-1.8 m installed in a bolting pattern 1.1 x 1.5 m. In both systems the fall step is about 10 m, i.e. the width of a belt and a bearing pillar. The Indications of Rock Mass Pressure Individual Dog Heading Individual dog headings are set wide apart from each other in the unmined ore deposit area where there is no interaction of headings. The indication of rock mass pressure are, in such cases, limited to the deformations and damage of side walls. Radiometric studies of rock mass loosening showed that the maximum range of lifts in side-walls immediately after web was 2 m (4,5). In the course of time the cracked side rocks fall off, thus widening the heading. The morphology of side-walls is influenced by the location of the heading in relation to clump layer/tarry. During the 1970's geostatisticians were often accused of not paying sufficient attention to geologic features in the computerized generation of ore reserves. Unfortunately this charge was all-too-often justified and the results of such studies tended to be oversimplified and failed to reveal the full potential of computerized reserve estimation and geostatistical methods. There were some notable exceptions to this trend. Techniques were described that paid a great deal of respect to the geologic characteristics peculiar to certain deposits (Rendu J-M, 1984; Barnes T. E., 1982). At Gold Fields several techniques have been developed for handling the geologic characteristics of orebodies for reserve estimation purposes. These have developed over time and the evolution of their adoption has been a reflection of our own learning experience from the practical application of computerised reserve estimation on many precious metals deposits.

Freeport Minerals Co.'s Ertsberg East underground operation typifies the cliche that all the "easy" ore deposits have already been found. Despite its location, in a remote Indonesian rain forest, and the effort and expense required to develop the ore body, the mine was developed on schedule, under budget, and with minimal disruption of the adjacent open-pit mining operation. Development of the Ertsberg East copper, gold, and silver ore body took less than two years after exploration drilling and feasibility studies were completed. In addition, the project came in well under its targeted budget of $101.5 million. Initial block caving and underground ore production took place last year. About 3 kt/d of Ertsberg's total 8.6 kt/d ore production is currently mined underground. This will increase to 5.4 kt/d by year's end. Underground operations will eventually account for all of Ertsberg's production, as the open-pit ore body is depleted. Freeport Minerals is currently studying the possibility of increasing total Ertsberg East production tonnage to 10.5 kt/d by 1983. The equipment, work practices, and development methods at Ertsberg East (Gunung Bijih Timur or "GBT"), while typical of other block caving mines, were modified for rapid mine development and maximum ore recovery. Located in the Irian Jaya province, "Gunung Bijih" is the Indonesian expression for the Dutch "Ertsberg" that in English means "ore mountain." "Timur" means "east" and relates to the fact that the new underground ore body lies about 1 km east of the open pit. The area surrounding GBT is mountainous, with peaks from 4.2-5 km. The underground mine adit and surface plant are located at a 3.6-km elevation. The mine, 4° south of the equator, gets 5.1 m/a of rain, but has an average daily temperature of only 13°C because of the mine's elevation.

When data points, plotted on X-Y coordinates, lie along a simple line, their regression can be matched to a high degree of accuracy by one or other simple algebraic expression (Boot and Cox, 1970). Under these conditions, interpolation is axiomic. Further, if the expression defines no more than a straight line, a parabola or other such line which can be related to some specific mechanism which generates the points, then extrapolation might be valid. However, any extrapolation would depend on the continued, unchanged functioning of the mechanism. Studies of more intricate assemblages of data points have long been based on representation by means of series (Fourier, 1811). If sufficiently complicated, several different algebraic expressions can represent the same intricate regression accurately (Hoerl, 1954). However, without reference to a mechanism, no extrapolation is contemplated. Typically, variations in the prices of minerals with time are. sufficiently complicated to render invalid any simple attempts at extrapolation. The computer, however, can be used to derive algebraic expressions which match complicated regressions and also can be represented by the functioning of a mechanism (Becker, 1984). The techniques involved have been applied with advantage in the study of time series representations of mineral prices.

The modem copper industry presents an excellent opportunity for the application of clean, environmentally friendly techniques using currently available hydrometallurgical technologies. This paper briefly reviews key events in the development of modern hydrometallurgy in Chile. Discussion is given to those prominent events whose impact continues to be felt on most projects currently underway. Mention is also made of the foundations of heap leaching technologies, preceded by agglomeration and acid curing, known as the T.L. Leaching Process, the cornerstone of more recent developments. A review is also presented of the leading copper hydrometallurgy projects of the 1990s. A list of those projects, their tonnages and the estimated date of implementation is provided. The conclusion provides an overview of developments in research and the trends in the implementation of copper hydrometallurgy projects in Chile for the coming years.

There are a number of issues associated with freight trains in non-electrified tunnels that are fundamental during the planning and operation of a rail tunnel. During uphill operation, increased air temperatures at the air intake locations of diesel trains can reduce diesel motor efficiency (stalling/choking) and affect HVAC systems. Strong airflows can aggravate fire scenarios due to fanning or water-reactive cargo materials. This paper focuses on the impact of freight trains on tunnel safety concepts, strategies to overcome heat issues at locomotive air inlets and air quality in tunnels operating diesel trains.

Assumptions about future commodity prices need to be made with close regard to the purposes for which they are being used. Prices generated for financial planning or trading purposes are unlikely to be suitable for the longer run purposes of project evaluation and reserve estimation. In this latter context, price assumptions need to be realistic, stable and rooted in a rigorous fundamental analysis of long run industry drivers. Amongst the factors to be considered in such analysis are price history, production costs and structural dynamics. It is also important that prices adopted are consistent with other information being used by a company in its decision-making.

The application of many standard estimation techniques to deposits with a significant degree of folding or faulting can be difficult, mainly because of the necessity to maintain the correct spatial relationship between the samples and the points being estimated. Various transformations must be applied to the points of interest before variography and estimation can be applied, followed by back transformation into the original space. This paper presents an unfolding technique developed by Gemcom Software International that minimizes the inherent distortion in the process and also provides an example of the technique in folded and faulted situations.

Using a fuzzy logic controller, a signal applied on the processes may be generated through a linguistic protocol expressing an operator's intuitive control strategies. In this work, fuzzy logic controller and PID controller imposed upon the feedback liquid level control systems for a stirred tank are studied and compared. The construction factors including the shape of membership functions, number of fuzzy variables, number of inputs, number of rules, and different defuzzification methods are considered in design and formulating the fuzzy logic control strategies and algorithms. From the analysis of the strategies and control performances, an optimum controller may be generated by making use of the best combination of these fuzzy construction factors.

Introduction Backfilling of mine voids is used to prevent or control the effects of subsidence on surface structures. The pumped-slurry, blind backfilling process has been successful for stabilizing ground over abandoned and inaccessible underground coal mines. This article describes the systematic evaluation of potential monitoring systems that would improve backfill monitoring technology. It also details field proof-of-concept tests that were conducted on two systems and the difficulties encountered in implementing them. Ground subsidence over abandoned mines can have devastating effects on overlying urban areas decades after the closing of room-and-pillar mines. The result may be cracked foundations, ruptured gas and water lines, broken sewers, distortion or cracking in superstructures, and sinks and potholes in the ground surface. About 32,000 km2 (8 million acres) of land in the US has been undermined for coal. According to the US General Accounting Office, 8,100 km2 (2 million acres) have undergone subsidence and another 8,100 km2 (2 million acres) are expected to subside by the year 2000. Actual figures on land affected or threatened by subsidence are probably much higher, since these estimates were based on late 1960s studies. For more than two decades, the US Bureau of Mines has been engaged in stabilizing ground in urban areas having high risk potential for subsidence costing millions of dollars. Thousands of acres have been stabilized, protecting property worth hundreds of millions of dollars. In earlier years, backfilling was by in-mine stowing in accessible mines or by gravity-feed sluicing methods in inaccessible mines. Pumped-slurry methods have been used extensively in the past 10 years. More slurry can be injected for fill from fewer injection holes over extensive areas in abandoned mines. Since this method requires fewer boreholes, there is less disruption of surface facilities. An investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of using advanced, remote sensing or monitoring technology for application in monitoring fill placement. Specifically, the objective was to develop conceptual systems for blind backfill monitoring that require fewer boreholes and give better definition than is now possible. Blind Backfilling Methods Blind backfilling operations are conducted from the surface and do not require personnel and equipment underground. These methods are applicable to abandoned, inaccessible workings. Two categories of blind back-filling are point support, practiced by civil engineers to protect individual structures or surface facilities, and areal backfilling methods, used to protect large areas against subsidence. Point Support Methods Point support methods are usually gravity-feed systems. In general, point support methods use small volumes of expensive fill material and require a large number of boreholes within a constructed site. Because of the processed material used for back-filling and the close spacing of the injection boreholes, control and monitoring often may be accomplished by borehole cameras. Areal Backfilling Areal backfilling is conducted mainly by the pumped-slurry injection process (Fig. 1). Mining is most vital to our civilization. The current model of extraction technologies was designed without an expiration date and therefore generates environmental effects that are severe. Mining results-effects have been traditionally accepted and promoted around the world since Agricola described mining. Mining’s extractive technology is outmoded and standardized and inflicts negative results-effects on nature. Those results are liabilities dimensioned in legacy and type of nature able to provide to the next generation. In order to design, build, and transform mining effectively we must ask: What is the vision of mining? Mining has exhausted its antiquated mindset of over 200 years. Now it merely pilots us into crisis. The challenge today is to resolve the socio-environmental conflicts globally with a radical transformation of the mining business at its core. This paper illustrates that old mindsets must be radically updated or the concept of mining will continue to be trapped. Changing the mindset will enable discourse toward a new destiny. These changes will change mining for the better. We are able to evolve and get different results than in the past by pursuing a new legacy to live in harmony with nature for many more years. INTRODUCTION Minerals are supported by the law of conservation of mass. They have the unique characteristics of being finite, exhaustible, unsustainable, and have an unlimited recycling. Minerals are also hard to find because we have explored and virtually exhausted the whole crust of this planet. Orebodies that used to be considered world class are almost exhausted. In the short-term, it would be almost impossible to find new world class orebodies unless they could be extracted from the ocean, the moon or other planets like Mars. Mining is designed to extract minerals for profit and to keep civilizations functioning. Subsequently, mining has a social issue that is an economic issue. Thus, mining must be seen as a real and urgent subject matter that must be protected in thought and in fact. The actual mining extractive technologies produce disequilibrium in nature that has unknowable effects in the course of time. History is filled with the negative consequences to nature due to the model of mining. The evidence of these effects from mining’s model is apparent in repetitive liabilities around the world. The effects negatively impact nature without any consideration to how these impacts will manifest themselves in the future. This model of mining is widespread and extolled in every corner of the planet because it is old and familiar and although wasteful and outdated, we do not want to expend financial resources from profit or elsewhere to explore newer ideas, methods, or technologies that would help us keep a sustainable harmony between extraction and nature. We need a new vision for mining today and to explore in what way academia can and must play a social role in the teaching of mining methods. We need to question why we continue to support the old model of mining and to ask ourselves what prevents us from updating and modernizing the method of mining to meet the current needs not just of civilization but the urgent needs to undo some of the damage to the earth. This paper hopes to develop a method to change our minds about how we conduct the business of mining in order to control the destiny of it.

? World industrialization, increased urbanization, and population growth are driving a sustained demand for minerals, metals and coal. Energy demand is expected to increase significantly in the coming decades - placing even more emphasis on supply, security and environmental impact issues. ? Several countries are taking steps to nationalize their own resources thus safeguarding their supplies and reducing exports of natural resources. ? Understanding the future availability of critical minerals requires a global perspective. It is essential to know where deposits are located, their reserves and resources, the technologies necessary for production, and the costs of producing and transporting the products to consumers. ? As mining companies look to maintain or increase their operating capabilities and increase their mineral resource bases, the search for commodities expands beyond developed terrestrial regions of the world, to include marine resources. (Figure 1) Operating challenges in these locations include finding skilled workers, building infrastructure, improving recovery technologies and practicing sustainable development.

Since the early 1970's, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has carried out exploration geophysical research on non-basemetal strategic mineral commodities, including uranium, lithium, gold, potash, and chromite. The chromite study (largely completed) and the potash study (still going on) carried out during the past 4 years have not been aimed at the discovery of new ore reserves, but instead were designed to complement exploration by private mining companies. The USGS has carried out research not normally conducted by these companies, but which can be used by them in their efforts to increase production of strategic minerals. Results of the chromite and potash studies highlight the importance of: 1) a laboratory-research phase (petrophysical and petrographic studies) at the beginning of work on any new commodity; 2) an operative or functional ore-deposition model to serve as a conceptual framework, and the necessity to continually test, refine, and modify it during the study; 3) indirect geologic/geochemical indicators, secondary associations, and the use of multiple physical properties; and 4) the use of a systematic inverse-cost sequential-exploration (i.e. lowest resolution and lowest cost first) strategy to keen the exploration economically reasonable. The keystone to the success of the study is frequent and substantive dialogue among geologists, geophysicists, and geochemists.

The Cigar Lake project, located in northern Saskatchewan (Figure 1), is one of the world?s largest high grade uranium deposits, with reserves of 150 million kilograms of uranium in a deposit averaging 430 metres below the surface. The Cigar Lake project is being developed by Cigar Lake Mining Corporation (CLMC) which is owned by Cameco Corporation (48.75%), Cogema Canada (36.375%). Idemitsu Uranium Exploration Canada Ltd. (12.875%) and Korea Electric Power (2%). Mining the Cigar Lake orebody is presenting a very real challenge due to the high grade and the ground conditions in and around the orebody. Presently, an underground test of various mining methods is underway.

One of the main objectives while planning ventilation systems for mines with multiple fans is minimization of the total airpower consumption of the mine. Solution of this problem by conventional ventilation network analysis programs is tedious and time consuming, and may not yield optimum results in all the cases. The paper presents an algorithm for solving multiple fan networks by finding optimum combination of fan operating points for required airflow distribution in the ventilation system.

Digital image analysis systems to quantify particle size of crushed materials have successfully been applied in large-scale mining operations throughout the world. Particle size measurement at various crushing and sieving stages, especially in aggregate production, will facilitate the industry’s desire and need to achieve higher levels of process control and automation. This paper will 1) summarize applications of digital image analysis in the industrial minerals industries and introduce the Split-Online technology; 2) detail an actual recent test application of digital image analysis that ultimately lead to the installation of an automatic, non-invasive particle size distribution monitoring system; 3) document how this information is being applied: and 4) summarize the new Split-Online Aggregates Module now available.
