When the oxidized surface gold deposits are mined out, the underlying refractory gold ores become the challenge of treat­ment systems. The size and value ofrefractory gold ore reserves are a function of recovery efficiency and operating cost. The start-up of LURGI's gold roasters at NEWMONT's Carlin site has established whole ore gold roasters as a key to high gold recoveries. The ores from several deposits of the Carlin trend are roast­ed utilizing LURGI / NEWMONT technology, which has achieved gold recoveries approaching 95%. This is in dramatic contrast to the traditional perception that roasting is limited to gold recoveries in the mid 80's. Extensive investigation in pilot scale is required to achieve stable high gold recoveries for most variables in the ore body. The key question for all pilot tests is the classic question of (ROM) run of mine ore roasting or concentrate roasting. All variables are dominated by the leaching/ recovery char­acteristics of the natural ores. The degree ofrecovery improve­ment by roasting / calcining establishes the frame of the eco­nomical conditions. The full range of flexibility is required for the design of the plant to allow for ore variations in heat values, combustible con­tents, agglomeration behavior and off-gas composition. The variables in the ore body influence, therefore, the price of the plant proportionally to its flexibility. Concentrates are usually fairly stable in composition, com­bustion behavior, heat values and particle size since they are a product of the very selective flotation process. Flotation is not the successful process step when the tailings remain high in refractory gold contents.

A key component of the Inland Feeder Project is the Riverside Badlands Tunnel, a7.9-mile stretch subjected to high internal and external hydraulic pressures passing beneath highly eroded hills in a semi rural environment. The tunnel presented significant design and management challenges to the project team. This paper describes the formula for project success used to manage the design of this complex pressure tunnel, from team member selection to the completion of all contract documents, on schedule and below budget. The project team dealt with sensitive regional and local community issues and won the trust of the community. The team included participation by senior management and recognized experts from inception to finish. The team worked diligently to build quality into design and adopted a claims avoidance approach to management and preparation of documents.

Of many physical parameters critical to design of grinding processes, impact of grinding media is among the most difficult to measure or predict. Yet impact of falling grinding balls, pebbles, or rods accomplishes the fine grinding essential to metallurgical recovery of most important minerals. Unfortunately, the same impacts that break ore fragments deform or crack grinding mill liners. A project was undertaken at Climax Molybdenum Company to measure impact forces in operating ball mills so that they might be used to calculate stresses in liner materials and be correlated with service performance of mill liner alloys. Towards that end, a method of measuring impact forces on ball mill liners using an instrumented grinding ball has been developed. Preliminary tests show that impact forces and contact stresses imposed on bare mill liners are quite high but are greatly reduced by cushioning when coarse ore particles are crushed between balls and liners. Compressive and shear stresses induced in liners not protected by coarse ore are so severe that deformation or minute subsurface cracking are inevitable in all but the small production grinding mills, regardless of mill liner alloy strength or hardness.

Petro-diesel is a common collector for coal flotation, but the partitioning of diesel range organics (DROs) in process streams has not been widely studied. Preliminary research suggested that under normal dosing schemes total residual DRO contents in process waters should be limited to the sub-ppm water-soluble fraction (WSF). Further, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) should partition proportionately with DROs. The purpose of this study was to confirm these findings in laboratory flotation tests. Total DRO and specific PAH contents were measured in the waters associated with the concentrate and tailings streams. The results show that concentrate waters consistently had higher amounts of DROs than tailing waters. Moreover, the DRO contents in both streams generally increased with increasing diesel dosage. In line with preliminary research, DROs appeared to be limited to the WSF, and PAHs tended to partition proportionately with DROs. Under typical operating conditions, it appears that residual DROs should not present an environmental concern, but conditions should be avoided that allow significant overdosing of diesel.

Geochemical studies were under- taken in the Breckenridge mining district to test the effectiveness of soil and rock-chip samples in high- lighting known mineralization in the district, and in locating sites of possible porphyry-type mineralization, if such mineralization is present in the area. Soil sampling can be done more quickly and more cheaply, but it does not provide a direct site- specific sample of mineralized rock. In well-developed soils, supergene effects may mask and/or displace primary hypogene effects; and even in places where the soils are poorly- developed, as in the Breckenridge district, the masking effects may be felt. Soil anomalies, if present, likely will be of lower amplitude and more diffuse (widespread) than corresponding rock-chip anomalies. On the other hand, detailed rock-chip surveys are more time-consuming and expensive, even though they yield direct geologic information in addition to the chemical data. The goals of the combined soil and rock-chip programs were (1) to com- pare the data from the two; and (2) test the effectiveness in identifying significant chemical anomalies with respect to the geology of the district, as it is presently understood.

We define a specialized mineral market as follows: Specialized markets occur where a low volume of a given mineral is used to convey a large benefit to a specific product. Sales of these value added minerals to small markets generally require a different marketing approach than bulk or commodity markets for traditional minerals. Specialized markets are differentiated by several characteristics as listed in Table 1. [Table 1-Characteristics of Specialized Markets 1. Long-term sample evaluation 2. Small volume markets 3. Highly controlled properties 4. Customized specifications 5. Technical selling effort] Many of the specialized markets require long term evaluations before sales can be made. This can vary greatly depending on the type of industry and ultimate end-use of the final product. In some cases, complete evaluations may take from several weeks to years. Length of sample evaluation has no relationship to size of market. That is, the total market may be quite small or fairly large (e.g. from a few hundred pounds to a few million pounds). Uniformity of value added minerals from lot to lot is an extremely important characteristic for these markets. Variations that are of no consequence to one industry (or application) cannot be tolerated in another. This has led to customized specifications and test procedures for specific markets and applications. Because of the greater uniformity and customized specifications, the need for greater technical selling effort is required. This is particularly true in the initial developmental phases and contacts as well as in maintaining the account after the initial order. A small entrepreneurial organization can be used to advantage to achieve goals of sales and profit to these types of markets. The large commodity or bulk producer's sales and marketing organizations are not ordinarily equipped to give the necessary service or technical assistance to the specialized markets. The organization usually required for this type of marketing is given in Table 2. [Table 2- Specialized Marketing Organization Requirements 1. Flexible approach to technical and marketing problems 2. Versatile background in a broad range of industries 3. Laboratory backup when necessary 4. Marketing expertise 5. Technically competent management] In developing specialized markets, a flexible approach to both technical and marketing problems is necessary in understanding the needs and requirements of the industry and the applications involved. This flexibility is also helpful in adapting existing products to new market areas. Having knowledge of a range of industries as broad as possible can be very helpful. It often happens that a product developed in one area or industry can lead to its application in a different area with excellent results. Laboratory assistance for a wide range of tests and test procedures is an important asset in any development program for specialized markets. Laboratories can also assist in competitive evaluations. Marketing expertise and a management with some degree of technical understanding are necessary in to assign proper cost/ benefit ratios to a proposed new product or application of existing products. This is important since the total market volume can be small and the time required for initial contact to first sale can often be lengthy. Also, management's technical and marketing expertise is required in evaluating all possible options that can be considered viable when an application is presented. Once an organization of this type is in place, it is then possible to determine the needs of the marketplace, including when various minerals might have to be customized to fill those needs. There are generally two methods of marketing, as noted in Table 3. [Table 3- Method of Marketing 1. Product Driven -Develop a product with certain desirable properties and try to find a market to utilize those properties. 2. Market Driven -Know market well enough that when a need arises, it is possible to identify a product that will satisfy the need.] These approaches are not mutually exclusive and can be used at the same time. Marketing a value added mineral generally requires the "market driven" approach. Hence, the importance of a knowledgeable management as outlined above. To determine where needs and opportunities exist, several approaches can be used. Table4 lists some of the methods employed.

The Broken Hill proprietary company Limited grate kiln pellet plant (1) located at Whyalla in South Australia commenced production on May 13, 1968. During commissioning, about 25,000 long tons of fluxed pellets were produced. Plant performance was satisfactory and acceptable under the plant guarantee. For production reasons, it was necessary to curtail the fluxed pellet run and revert to the production of acid pellets. In 1970, some 250,000 long tons of fluxed pellets were produced under varying operating conditions to determine the requirements for optimum quality pellets at acceptable production rates. In excess of 180,000 long tons of these fluxed pellets were exported to Japan. Problems experienced in production of the fluxed pellets are detailed, and the quality of the fluxed pellets compared to that of normal acid pellets produced at Whyalla. Brief Plant Details Run of mine ore treated was predominantly soft and friable and contained an average of 66 per cent Fe, 1.7 per cent Si02 and 1.8 per cent Al203. The main iron mineral in the ore was hematite with some martite also present. Plant feed was ground dry in ball mills 11 ft in diameter by 29 ft long to a Blaine surface area of 1600 sq.cm/g and the ground ore was wetted in a pug mill. Balling was carried out in balling drums 10 ft in diameter by 32 ft long. Induration equipment included an eighteen windbox grate 12 ft 2 in. wide by 164 ft 1 in. long, a rotary kiln 18 ft 6 in. diameter by 118 ft 8 in. long and an annular cooler 50 ft mean diameter by 7 it wide.

Introduction Gold exploration in the Dominican Republic has not received much publicity. The fact is, however, that a continuous program has been underway for some time. For the past two years, the Restauracion area of the western Dominican Republic, near the Haitian border, has been the scene of mineral exploration by the Dominican Department of Mines geologists, and later by geologists of Rosario Dominicana. The latter is a state-owned gold mining company and operator of the Pueblo Viejo open-pit gold mine. The exploration is for mineral deposits with the goal of finding another Pueblo Viejo-type deposit. Geology Exploration is being carried out in the western central Cordillera, the backbone of the Island of Hispaniola. Geology consists of quartz veins and veinlets and ramifying stringers carrying pyrite, barite, minor amounts of copper, and significant amounts of gold in places. They are associated with regional faulting in a complex of Cretaceous beds of andesites, dacites, argillites, siltstones, and shales. They are intruded by tonalites, diorites, and gabbros. Lesser amounts of zinc-lead mineralization occur in some locations. The showings appear as disseminations along the faults. To date, the work has been mostly geologic mapping - 1 to 50,000 with details on a scale of 1 to 20,000 and 1 to 10,000-stream and soil lithogeochemistry, and geophysics. Trenching and sampling were used to follow possible vein extensions. Particular emphasis has been placed on the Los Candelones district that was taken over by Rosario Dominicana. Here is where drilling has been initiated in the past months. The first hole drilled showed assays of 21 g/t (0.6 oz per st). The second hole intersected an interesting oxidized zone that reminded observers of the original Pueblo Viejo oxidized zone. A third drill hole went deeper than 75 m (246 ft), the depth to which the first two holes had been scheduled. An assay of 50 g/t (1.46 oz per st) was cut during drilling. The presence of an oxidized zone of any vertical and horizontal extent is important. This gives rise to continued exploration, as the

"Foreword by Lisa SchlinkSuperintendent, operations, Freeport-McMoRan Inc.,Green Valley, AZ, USAThe sixth annual Student Poster Contest hosted by the Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration was held during the 2015 SME Annual Conference and Expo in Denver, CO. The contest had another record-breaking attendance of 31 entries: 27 graduate and four undergraduate. The universities represented were: Colorado School of Mines, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, University of Wyoming and West Virginia University.The competition began with an extended abstract review by a panel of judges selected from MPD members. At the SME Annual Conference, all students displayed their posters, highlighting their research. The students with the top abstracts from the graduate and undergraduate divisions presented their research at the MPD Student Poster Session Wednesday morning. The panel of judges then provided tallied scores for the abstract, poster and presentation to determine the winners of the 2015 Student Poster Contest. The first- and second-place winners of both the graduate and undergraduate divisions received $1,000 and $500 scholarships, respectively. The third through seventh places received $200 each, and all other entrants received $100 each and were invited to join the MPD Luncheon.In the undergraduate division, Annette Hein of the University of Wyoming received first place for her research on “Solvent Extraction of Europium from a Nitric Acid Solution.” Second place went to Jennifer Galvin of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology for her research titled “Solvent Extraction of Neodymium Using PC88A.”In the graduate division, Caelen Anderson of the Colorado School of Mines received first place for his research titled “Fundamentals of Rare-earth Flotation Surface Chemistry: Hydroxamate Adsorption on Bastnasite”. This is Caelen’s fourth year placing in the top finisher. Second place in the graduate division went to Seyed Hassan Amini of West Virginia University for his research on “Ultra Clean Coal Production for the Solar-cell Industry.”The 2015 Student Poster Contest was chaired by Lisa Schlink (Freeport- McMoRan Inc.) and Emily Sarver (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University). In the paper presented by F.W. Brackebusch on the “Basics of paste backfill systems,” paste fill was presented as a backfill process that offers many advantages over other alternatives such as hydraulic fill and rockfill. It was observed, however, that the mechanics of paste-fill transportation in pipelines is not fully understood and that the success of its implementation in practice depends on the precise control of the proportions of fines, aggregates and water in the mixture. The author emphasized the necessity for laboratory and full-scale testing to determine the suitability of a material to be used as paste fill. Although experimental testing is definitely an important operation in the design of a reliable paste fill, advances in the understanding of the fundamental laws that govern paste flow in pipelines are equally relevant. Ideally, the results of such efforts would provide predictive models for the rheology of the paste and the corresponding pumping-energy requirements. In an attempt to achieve this objective, an ongoing research program has been active at McGill University’s Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering.

INTRODUCTION The flotation of minerals from their ores in flotation cells involves understanding many chemical and physical processes ranging from electronic events in the bulk mineral and in the mineral surface regime. molecular events at interfaces, the statics and dynamics of thinning and rupture of microscopic to molecular intefacial films, the fluid mechanics of bubble- particle events, the dynamics of air-water-solid colloid states in a flotation machine, etc. etc. D.W. Fuerstenau, whom we honour in this symposium has made unique contributions to many of these diverse physico-chemical and technological sub-processes. The present paper is concerned with a number of observations of the behaviour of minerals in flotation cells and the surface science of some mineral sulfide-water systems. We do not intend to be comprehensive in our analysis, but rather to highlight the challenges that face the scientific masochist who chooses to understand "froth flotationn. In what follows, emphasis is placed quite deliberately on technologically relevant, dynamic or realistic flotation processes i.e. the recovery in a froth of a given sulfide mineral particle of a given size and history from synthetic or actual ores in a flotation cell. Four different types of fire suppression systems were evaluated in large-scale fire experiments to study the effect of air velocity on the effectiveness to extinguish conveyor belt fires. The four different types of suppression systems were water sprinkler, deluge type water spray, and two different dry chemical fire suppression systems. The large-scale fire tests were conducted with 72-in-wide fire resistant rubber belt that met the Mine Safety and Health Administration flame resistant requirement specified in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 18, section 18.65 (also known as the 2G Flame Test). Each fire suppression system was tested at air velocities of 500-550 feet per minute (fpm) and 1350-1500 fpm. Two tests were conducted at both air velocities for each fire suppression system. Both of the water-based fire suppression systems were able to suppress the fire to the point that a miner could extinguish it with a fire extinguisher. However, the amount of water needed to suppress the fire to the point where a miner could walk up to extinguish any smoldering belting was greater than the current MSHA regulations require. MSHA regulations only require 10 minutes of water supply to the suppression system. In the test set up neither of these systems would have suppressed the fire had the water been turned off to the system after 10 minutes. The dry chemical suppression systems produced mixed results. Dry chemical suppression system A did not suppress the conveyor belt fire at either air velocity. Dry chemical system B suppressed the fire at 500 fpm air velocity, but produced mixed results at the higher air velocity. Details are presented on the large-scale fire test set-up, arrangement of the fire suppression systems, and conclusions regarding the effect of air velocity on fire suppression system design and performance. The first form of a surety bond was an honest handshake between two or more parties, agreeing to a decision and their personal guarantee of following through to completion. This has all changed. In 1895, the United States Treasury Department disclosed that $35 million worth of personal surety guarantees on file had become worthless. At that time, a law was passed, requiring all surety bonds, in favor of the United States, must be corporate surety bonds. Today, a surety bond is one of the nation's leading financial instruments used to guarantee the completion of an obligation.

SCHEME DESIGN London’s Heathrow Airport, as the world’s busiest international airport, is missing one vital aspect - a dedicated rail link which connects directly to the city. All this is about to change with the construction of Heathrow Express - a fast, high quality rail service between the airport and the centre of London. It was recognised in the mid 1980s that if Heathrow was to accommodate the forecast growth in passenger numbers and the resulting increase in road traffic, a dedicated airport rail service would be vital. The main access into the centre of Heathrow is via a road tunnel with a direct link to the M4 motorway. The airport has introduced a number of traffic management schemes, but these can only achieve so much benefit. Growth in air passenger traffic is predicted to continue at an average of 4% per annum well into the next century and it was clear that significant investment was needed. Heathrow Express at a cost of over £350 million will provide this when it starts its service in June 1998. The business case for the scheme is based on a rider ship of around 15% of air passenger traffic. The initial Heathrow Express service will be based on four trains per hour, up to 8 car train lengths, providing a high speed non-stop service between the airport and central London in just 16 minutes. Initially a joint venture between the British Railways Board and Heathrow Airport, by mutual consent of the two parties, Heathrow Airport recently purchased the British Railways Board share making this one of the largest private sector rail projects currently under construction in the UK. Leaving Paddington, the main rail terminus in West London, Heathrow Express trains will travel 12 miles on the newly electrified line to airport junction, north of the airport. At this point they will leave the mainline to enter a 5 mile tunnel section that runs underneath the heart of the airport. The railway companies are responsible for track work, signalling and electrification of the 12 mile main line section including a grade separated junction over the main tracks for the Great Western Railway which links London and South Wales. Sixty years ago, underground coal mining was the most hazardous job in the United States. Roof falls killed about 100 miners every year, more than all other causes put together. Fast forward half a century to 2016, and the first year ever with zero roof fall fatalities. Just three miners were killed by roof falls during the following six years. To understand how this historic goal was achieved, this study analyzed hundreds of roof fall fatality reports covering five decades. It found that the immediate effect of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (Coal Act) was to reduce the riskiest activities, like needlessly going under unsupported roof. Other hazards, like large roof falls, required technological developments before they were brought under control. Roof control plans, which the U.S. Bureau of Mines had been advocating since the 1920s, fostered the necessary improvements in both the safety culture and the mining technology.

Reviewing the development of resin-in-pulp (RIP) technology for the extraction of gold in the world, especially in South Africa and USSR, and the chemistry of interaction between aurocyanide ions and anion-exchange resins. RIP benchtest and pilot plant investigations show that the resin of the weak-base and strong-base can absorb gold in the cyanide pulp and gold can be eluted from the strong-base resin by electro-elution. The possibility of future application of RIP technology in China fa also briefly discussed.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc. is actively involved in improving the reliability of mining and processing equipment through the use of failure analysis and condition monitoring activities. Program results include an increase in equipment capacity and an overall reduction in operating costs. The identification of equipment failure modes and the development of associated capital asset management practices can minimize failure consequences. Successful programs have included; alterations to management practices, equipment modifications, and/or the implementation of condition monitoring programs. By controlling or minimizing the effects of incipient equipment failures, corrective actions can be taken earlier in the failure cycle, resulting in an associated reduction to repair costs and equipment down time.

Trona, Na3(CO3)(HCO3) ? 2H20, is mined in quantity from saline facies of the Eocene Green River Formation of southwestern Wyoming. The Green River deposits are the world's largest known resource of natural sodium carbonates. An estimated 127 billion tons of trona ore are known to occur in beds exceeding 4 ft in thickness (Wiig and others, 1995). Twenty-five trona beds, exceeding 3 ft in thickness, and covering at least 100 mil have been identified. The beds are numbered sequentially in ascending stratigraphic order. Trona beds underlie more than 850 mil (bed 17) and are up to 37 ft thick (bed 1) (Culbertson, 1966). Five underground mines, operating in beds 17, 19, 20, 24, and 25, process trona to produce soda ash (sodium carbonate). A total of 11,837,703 short tons of soda ash were produced from 17.1 million tons of trona ore in 1997 (Kostick and Clark, 1998). A detailed study of trona bed 17, using techniques of petrography and X-ray diffraction, has been undertaken in the Solvay trona mine, near Green River, Wyoming. A continuous, vertical-channel sample was taken from near the production shaft for this study. At this location, bed 17 is 12.6 ft thick and includes several stratigraphic markers that are easily correlated throughout the mine and in surrounding drill cores. Bed 17 in this area averages 90% trona through its entire thickness (Wiig and others, 1995) and 95-100% trona in the lower two-thirds of the bed. Mineral impurities include water-insoluble dolomite, quartz, pyrite, clays, and other minerals and partially water-soluble northupite and shortite. Northupite, Na3Mg(CO3)2C1, contributes to chloride contamination in the soda-ash product and is concentrated in the upper one-third of bed 17, which is left behind as roof rock. Northupite has two modes of occurrence: (1) as bedded strata with dolomite, chert, clay, and shortite and (2) between primary trona crystals in trona spar. Petrographic and mineralogic data indicate that this section of bed 17 was deposited subaqueously during its early and late history and may have undergone periods of deposition in a subaerial or marshy environment. Stratigraphic data indicate that trona accumulated at an annual rate of 2-4 in. per year. During trona deposition, dolomite, CaMg(C03)2, precipitated in parting layers when new water entered the lake, freshening supplies of calcium and magnesium. The lack of clay minerals in the trona facies suggests water input may be by means of springs, as opposed to overland flow. Clay occurrences in thicker dolomitic partings within the trona facies indicate periods of episodic overland flow, possibly resulting from storms in the surrounding basin.

Jim Walter Resources, Inc. operates four underground coal mines in Alabama. In 1986, during longwall recovery operations, sparks from a torch ignited methane that migrated onto the face after a roof fall. The fire quickly spread to the gob at the tailgate end of the longwall. The fire was successfully "area" sealed and mining operations resumed after five weeks. However, several problems were encountered during this process. This paper describes the events following the fire, methods used to control the situation, problems encountered, and steps taken to ensure preparedness for any future occurrences of this type.

Strip mining of coal, and to a lesser extent limestone, gravel and other mineral deposits in the Appalachian region of the eastern United States has left many large and small areas of devastated land where mining predated reclamation requirements. In Pennsylvania alone, there are between 250,000 and 370,000 acres of strip-mined land 1,2/. A higher percentage, and a greater total acreage of land in Pennsylvania is in need of some form of reclamation than any other state, with the neighboring states of Ohio and Nest Virginia also having nearly the same magnitude of mining.2/ Recent legislation governing strip mining of coal proposed royalties to cover reclamation of such presently unusable land. However, in Pennsylvania and other states some progress has already been realized by utilizing abandoned strip mines and gravel pits for waste disposal sites. Given acceptable hydrogeologic settings, such use of these mined areas for landfilling has provided the incentive for ultimately restoring unreclaimed land to beneficial use, at no cost to the general public.
