A dynamic input-output model for a coal power enterprise that now includes four underground coal mines, three coal washing plants, a power plant and a railway transportation system was developed. The model is applied to analyze investment alternatives for long-term development, including the expansion of existing mines, the opening of new mines, the construction of new coal washing and power plants and the upgrading of the railway system. As a result, the optimal investment strategy with capital schedules and projected sector outputs is obtained. Also, the importance of the new power plant to the strategic development of the company is demonstrated. It is concluded that, without applying a dynamic input-output model, it would be much more difficult or impossible to conduct such a systematic and compete analysis.

We have studied the possibility to use electrical phenomena in order to selectively separate minerals with various densities and dielectric constants in non-homogeneous electric fields. This technique is based on levitation forces acting on a solid particle immersed in dielectric fluid. When the gradient of the electric field is directed downwards, the levitation force in the dielectric fluid (pure liquid or electric colloids) will be in an upward direction to float sinking minerals by counterbalancing their density mismatch with the liquid medium. The separation process can be made by using two possible modes: either by direct application of electrical forces or by change in the density and dielectric constant of a liquid medium in which the mineral particles are placed. We have investigated several electrode configurations in order to produce electrical fields which are strongly non homogeneous. Further more, investigation on the dielectric properties of liquids have been performed.

Since 1986, we have developed a series of electromagnetic (EM) sounding systems at the Laboratory for Advanced Subsurface Imaging (LASI). These may be categorized by their frequency ranges: low frequency (LF, 30 Hz to 30 kHz), medium frequency (MF, 1 kHz to 1 MHz), and high frequency (HF, 30 kHz to 30 MHz). We have applied these EM systems to a variety of targets, including: mapping of plumes of contaminated groundwater, tracing leachate for an in-situ leaching operation, locating buried hazardous waste, identifying subsidence-prone zones and detecting buried voids. These systems are also applicable to exploration for ore bodies. Currently, our sounding system uses a vertical magnetic field vector. Previous systems of this type required a slow and relatively inaccurate manual rotation of the sensing coils. The systems also used occasional calibrations of the measuring system. We have developed a 3-dimensional mathematical rotation procedure for the data, as well as a simultaneous, high-accuracy, calibration method. These new developments have greatly increased the speed of the measurements, as well as improving the accuracy of the ellipticity data. We use stepped-frequency measurements along with narrow-band filtering to allow accurate measurements, even in high-noise areas. We typically obtain ellipticity measurements at eleven frequencies and along densely sampled profile lines. We use neural networks to help interpret the measured ellipticity patterns. Neural networks can be trained to relate the measured ellipticity patterns to earth resistivities or to discrete targets buried in the earth. The neural network training may use theoretical EM responses calculated from computer codes for relatively simple structures. The theoretical EM response for many complex targets that are of interest cannot currently be reliably calculated, even with the largest supercomputers available. We have therefore chosen to do some of the training using theoretical EM responses generated in a full-scale modeling tank located at our Avra Valley Geophysical Test Site. We have also developed data-visualization software to help interpret the large data sets produced by this system.

Canadian sylvinites contain over 90% of KCl and NaCl and a few percent of water-insoluble minerals. Cationic flotation is used to produce KCl concentrates. Since water-insoluble minerals appear in the pulp as slimes, and since long-chain primary amines are utilized as a collector, desliming is essential. The potash industry utilizes different desliming methods. This may involve selective flocculation of the slimes with polyacrylamide and removal of the flocculated product by flotation, or mechanical desliming with the use of classifying cyclones. Whichever method is applied, desliming is never complete; the flotation feed after desliming still contains about one percent of the slimes which heavily affect collector consumption and flotation selectivity. Therefore, the remaining slimes have to be rendered inactive by “blinding” them with polymers such as carboxymethyl cellulose or guar gum. The commercial blinders used by the potash industry include natural and synthetic polysaccharides. The most common is the use of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and guar gum (GG). These are quite different polymers, while CMC is anionic, GG is non-ionic; while the applied CMCs are of relatively low molecular weight (about 300,000) GGs have much higher molecular weight. Guar gums are also heavily used as the depressants of naturally floatable gangue in the processing of platinum-bearing ores, and according to Harris et al. (1999) quite a large variety of modified guar gums are available in South Africa for this application. Cheng et al. (2002) claim that natural guar gum’s molecular weight is 1.935 • 106. Robinson et al. (1982) found that the molecular weights of five grades of commercial guar gums ranged from 4.4 • 105 to 16.5 • 105. The highest molecular weight sample is then very close to the natural guar gum studied by Cheng et al. (2002). According to the manufacturer, the Rantec KP4000 guar gum which is used by the Canadian potash industry has a molecular weight of about 1.5 x 106. Since both KCl and NaCl are soluble in water, the flotation process is carried out in saturated brine. At 20 oC, 1450 kg of NaCl-KCl-H2O saturated solution contains about 0.300 kg of NaCl, 0.150 kg of KCl, and 1 kg of water (Gaska et al., 1965). Thus, in the saturated NaCl-KCl brine there are about 5.1 kmole of NaCl and 2 kmole KCl per 55.5 kmole of water. This gives 3.9 molecules of water per each ion assuming complete dissociation of NaCl and KCl. Thus, it is obvious that all water molecules in the saturated brine must be bound in the hydration shells around the hydrated ions. The surface tension of the NaCl-KCl saturated brine was recently measured to be 85 mN/m (Laskowski et al., 2003).

The most important safety aspect associated with great mining height in steeply dipping coal seam mining is the stability and control of the roof. When soft coal and hard gangue make up the immediate roof of a working face, the soft-coal interlayer plays a significant role in gangue damage and can cause problems such as roof collapse in front of the support, collapse of partial area supports and other problems that can affect the stability of the supports and the surrounding rock system. This study found that the first weighting step of a multigangue roof is larger than that of a nongangue roof, but periodic weighting steps are similar. The overburden collapse height is lower in a multigangue roof than in a nongangue roof due to the buffering and supporting function of the collapsed gangue. Failure of the coal interlayer is the key factor in the collapse of multilayer gangue. The limited load of the interlayer and maximum resistance of the support is concluded by the hard gangue and soft coal interlayer mechanical model. The maximum resistance of the support increased with the dip angle of the seam and burial depth. Certain measures are proposed to control the stability of the gangue roof, including zoning control of the mining height and resistance and advancing the support while maintaining roof contact, thus ensuring the integrity of the support and surrounding rock system.

Namibia is one of Africa's newest nations. A German colony until 1915, it then became a South African protectorate until 1990, when it gained independence after an armed struggle that lasted more than two decades. However, no trace of past bitterness can be found today in the capital, Windhoek, or in the countryside. Namibia is now one of the safest parts of Africa. Namibia's industrial base and infrastructure have been untouched by war. Swapo, the ruling party, has embarked on a successful policy of reconciliation and economic development. The GNP per capita is a surprising $1500 (from the World Bank), one of the highest in Africa. Namibia's population stands at 1.3 million, including about 100,000 whites. Namibia is a very sparsely populated country (1.7 inhabitants per km2). About 70% of the people are farmers. Namibia has a surface area of 824,232 km2 (318,261 sq miles), about the size of France and Germany combined. The semi-arid climate and generally flat morphology make the country well suited to mineral exploration. About 40% of the country presents abundant rock outcrops. The rest is buried under the Kalahari sands. However, this cover in most of the country hardly exceeds 200 m (655 ft), and Australian technology has shown that large mineral deposits (Roxby Downs) can nowadays be found at even greater depths. Mining is Namibia's largest industry. In 1991, it accounted for 22% of the country's GDP, about 70% to 80% of its exports by value and 25% of internally generated government revenues. The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) is responsible for formulating and implementing national mineral policies. This agency has recently introduced legislation aimed at encouraging new and long-term investment in the mineral sector. The variety of Namibian mineral resources, both metallic and nonmetallic, is rivaled by few countries worldwide.

The combined Bootstrap and Capstone deposits, located in the Bootstrap subdistrict (Section 10, T36N, R49E, M.D.B.M., Elko County, Nevada), are approximately 27 miles northwest of Ca-1I: Nevada. The contiguous Bootstrap Capstone deposits are located along the northeastern and northern flanks of Round Mountain, a horst block separated by grabens from the sheep Creek Mountains to the north-northwest and the Tuscarora Mountains to the east. Open-pit-minable gold reserves as of December, 1989, were 13.27 million short tons with an average grade of .057 troy ounces gold per ton and an overall waste-to-ore strip ratio of 2.5:1. Ore zones in Bootstrap are concentrated along north striking high-angle dikes localized along faults, while ore zones at Capstone are strata form and structural, occurring at the Devonian limestone/siliceous sediment interface and in high-angle fault-filling dikes. Pre-ore faulting produced a complex structural setting for Capstone, dominated by strong northwest fault sets cross-cut by northeasterly structures. Alteration associated with both deposits is silicification with a-strong argillic overprint. Dike emplacement, which post-dates silicification, marked the onset of mainstage gold deposition and argillic overprinting of silicified lithologies. Gold displays an affinity for moderately argillized sedimentary and igneous lithologies. Mineralogic and geochemical analyses of rotary percussion drill samples show good correlation between gold, silica, antimony, and arsenic.

Introduction The minerals exploration business, like many businesses, is faced with the problem of valuing future, risky cashflows. These cashflows are derived from those mineral deposits which have been successfully commercialized. Many deposits, however, do not have the quantities or grade of ore to be considered economic at the projected metal prices using the traditional tools of the Capital Asset Pricing Model and discounted cashflow analyses. If one calculates the future revenues, costs and cashflows of one these marginal properties, and discounted it at the appropriate risk-adjusted discount rate, it may have a negative present value. Yet such a property may still have real, positive value in the marketplace. Why would a firm pay money for a property with an (apparent) minus present value? Mining properties such as these are bought and sold in arms- length transactions on a regular basis. Why is this so? Part of the reason relates to the nature of ore reserve information. To generate cashflows, the analyst must t assume that the reserve information is known with certainty when, in fact, reserves are not known with certainty. Mineral reserves are a function of commodity price, extraction costs and the level of (usually drilling) information about the reserves. Discussion by N. Standish and P.N. Standish Leonard and Newman (1989) describe concepts and plans of their forthcoming project designed to increase the bulk density of broken coal at various stages of its production and handling. This is an excellent idea and something that will certainly be useful to the coal mining industry worldwide. The authors seek to achieve bulk density increase by "reducing oreliminating, through chemical additives and engineering design, particle voidage and enhance particle consolidation trickling between the point of breakage (at the face) and loading (in the shuttle car) to increase coal bulk density and productivity." In the paper, they present some supporting results of bulk density versus moisture, with or without oil addition, from the steel industry research. Unfortunately, the paper contains many misconceptions and half-truths that detract from an otherwise excellent objective of the project of increasing bulk density by reducing particle voidage-"the bottom line evaluator." Correct. Theory Definitions Coal bulk density is the ratio of the mass of a collection of discrete particles to the volume that it occupies (ASA, 1980). There can be no possible argument about this definition. Mass and volume are readily measured both in laboratory and large scale installations. So, to obtain the bulk density, one simply divides the measured mass by the measured volume. It is here that we come unstuck as everybody who has ever had to reconcile book values with the measured stock tonnages knows. Where does the problem originate? Almost invariably in a too casual a reading of the above definition and the words "a collection of discrete particles." The word collection means "a number of objects collected or gathered together, viewed as a whole" (The Oxford English Dictionary, 1989). The world energy crisis has created a greatly expanded exploration program for energy fuels. The demand for materials required for drilling operations such as barite, which is the primary component of drilling fluids, has increased proportionally. As in the case of many other minerals, existing high grade barite mines are no longer capable of producing the required tonnage. Consequently, exploration and development of lower grade ore bodies has been increased. The need to produce a high quality product at maximum recovery rates, along with the ever changing economics affecting both selling price and production costs has triggered accelerated research programs toward more sophisticated and efficient beneficiation methods. Taking into account the specific gravity differential between barite (4.5) and the normal gangue minerals such as silica and calcite (2.7), gravity concentration methods are the prime consideration with flotation as a scavenging process. Greater emphasis on particle size liberation, size reduction and concentration is also indicated. In order to accomplish these objectives, it has been necessary to revert back to the old adage, "Recover your minerals as soon as they are free."

The development is described of a real-time tracer gas sensing system for use in fell-scale laboratory studies of air flow behavior around mining machines. A semiconductor sintered tin-dioxide gas sensor is used for gas analyses. A data acquisition and analyses software specific to the sensor characteristics was also developed as part of the system. The system permits the study of transient behavior and assists in obtaining a better understanding of the movement of air around mining machines and in the study of the effect of potential airflow modification devices on the dust exposure of face personnel. It seeks to replace the current method of using a centralized infrared gas analyzer that polls several sampling points using an array of solenoid valves and gas line purgers. The polling results in a significant time lapse between the first and the last set of readings. The system described in this paper has the advantages of real-time sampling and safe operation.

The Cripple Creek diatreme-intrusive complex is known primarily for its vein telluride-gold ores. It is also known for the great vertical range of its major veins - >990 m (>3250 ft). Not as well-documented, however, are the ores dispersed into the wallrocks adjacent to veins, the ores associated with hydrothermal and tectonic breccias, or mineralized zones within fluvial, lacustrine and volcaniclastic rocks de- posited within the diatreme complex. The ore-gangue minerals were precipitated from oxidized, alkaline fluids that yielded an abundance of carbonate, sulfate and oxide minerals along with minor base metal sulfides and precious metal tellurides. Wallrock alteration is limited adjacent to veins and is more extensive within hydrothermal and tectonic breccias. Cripple Creek background The Cripple Creek district has a spectacular production history. More than 653 t (21 million oz) of gold were recovered between 1891 and 1959. Early published accounts documented the principal production from narrow- sheeted vein systems (Cross and Penrose, 1895; Lindgren and Ransome, 1906; Loughlin, 1927; Loughlin and Koschmann, 1935). Production also came from spectacular open-space fillings within the Cresson diatreme, also known as the Cresson “blow-out” (Patton, 1917; Patton and Wolf, 1915). Beginning in the mid- l96Os, more modern studies were initiated by the US Geological Survey (USGS) (Gott et al. , 1967, 1969; Kleinkopf et al., 1970) and by universities (Lane, 1976: Dwelley, 1984; Trippel, 1985; Thompson et al., 1985; Saunders, 1986; Birmingham, 1987; Eriksson, 1987; Nelson, 1989; Wood, 1990; Seibel, 1991).

The Galore Creek copper deposits lie in the Stikine River district of northwest British Columbia, a largely undeveloped region which possesses rugged mountain terrain with deeply incised valleys which support dense undergrowth. Timberline is normally at about 1300 m (4265 ft) and the higher levels contain glacial systems and large ice fields with peaks rising to 3500 m (I 1,483 ft). A location map of the Galore Creek area is given in Fig. 1. In the late 1920s, field parties under the direction of F.A. Kerr (1948) of the Geological Survey of Canada completed geological surveys of the district. Primary access for this work was provided by riverboats on the Stikine and Iskut Rivers. Kerr's party had to contend with extremely difficult travel conditions that required considerable backpacking, augmented by pack dogs in certain cases. Absence of ground control led Kerr to establish his own topographic maps. Among the geological data established was the recognition [ ] that small bodies of orthoclase porphyry in the district are often well mineralized with base metal sulfides. Copper mineralization in the upper Galore Creek valley, a tributary of Scud River which flows into the Stikine River some 80 km (50 miles) south of the small settlement of Telegraph Creek, was originally discovered during aerial reconnaissance by M. Morrison and W. Buckholz while prospecting for Hudson Bay Exploration and Development Co. Ltd. in 1955. Malachite- and azurite-stained out- crops in several parts of the Galore Creek watershed are clearly visible from distances of 500 m ( 1640 ft) or more. Claims were staked in 1956 and the copper showings were partly mapped, trenched, and investigated by shallow diamond drilling. Because of the remoteness of the area and higher priorities for expenditures elsewhere, no further work was undertaken and most of the claims were allowed to expire.

Prior to initiating construction of a new mineral development project, sponsoring organizations must be convinced that the operation will be viable. Proof is typically provided by the feasibility study. Considerable man hours will be spent in assessing and evaluating data on the deposit, its environment, and the means of development. Impact studies must be made for various scales of operation, inclusion of by-products, new methods of treatment, deferent levels of integration, and infrastructure configuration. Examples of current materials handling cost estimates are provided from the ongoing investigation in which Amoco is a participant at Ok Tedi in Papua New Guinea and Gag Island in Indonesia.

In his keynote address at the 18th International Minerals Processing Conference (IMPC), R.P. King, director of the University of Utah Comminution Center, said "it will be the application of very fundamental physical principles that is likely to bring major advances in comminution technology (IMPC, pp. 39-45)." It is evident from the literature published in 1993 that many of these fundamental studies, particularly as they relate to single-particle fracture mechanics and mineral liberation, are starting to bear fruit. The beginnings of fundamental mathematical models for design, scale-up and control of comminution systems are now taking shape. Modeling/fundamentals Population balance models (PBM) have been used to describe grinding systems for 20 to 30 years. However, Williams and Meloy (IMPC, pp. 73-79) pointed out some of the inherent problems with this modeling approach and that there is no unique solution for the unconstrained PBM for grinding. Many of the current constraints used to back-fit selection and breakage functions were also shown to have problems. The need for a more fundamental means of determining these parameters was indicated.

Researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Saturn light that significantly improves illumination for roof-bolting machine operators while reducing glare. The existing roof-bolter lighting was the baseline and was compared to the Saturn at 100, 75 and 50 percent intensities. Discomfort glare and disability glare were measured by the De Boer rating scale and the Mars Letter Contrast sensitivity test, respectively. Thirty study participants were tested. Discomfort glare was reduced at least three levels with the Saturn luminaire. Visibility levels were four to 6.5 times better with the Saturn than with the baseline. The Saturn design is freely available for commercialization.

The acquisition of submarine gravity data using airborne gravity technology is a practical reality. Ocean Floor Geophysics plans to deploy a free-swimming ROV based submarine gravimeter on a commercial basis in early 2009. The submarine instrument is a variant of the well-used GT-1A airborne gravimeter. Airborne gravity surveys are now routine. The primary factor controlling the accuracy of airborne gravimeters is the precision of the GPS measurement of vertical movement of the sensor platform. The gravity measurements along a flight line are the differences between the output of the gravimeter vertical accelerometer and the estimate of the aircraft vertical acceleration using the differential GPS system. The principle difficulty of moving an airborne gravimeter to a free-swimming submarine platform is the necessity to have an accurate real time estimate of the changing elevation and hence changing vertical acceleration of the platform; GPS doesn't work underwater and an accurate estimate of depth fluctuations to the necessary precision is difficult to acquire. It is interesting that the airborne gravity gradiometer technology, which competes with the airborne gravity technology, was first developed as a classified military application for use by missile submarines during the cold war. Gradiometers were developed for this application specifically to avoid this problem. A gradiometer does not require as accurate an estimate of its vertical position to make a useful reading- it measures gravity gradients, not the gravity field itself.

To adequately attack the longwall dust problem, the US Bureau of Mines funded a contract to define dust sources on a longwall mine face area. The study examined the shearer during sumping, cutting, and tramming, the conveyor, and the roof supports. Tests showed the shearer to be the major dust source. Introduction Long-term illnesses place a heavy burden on miners, the mining industry, and taxpayers. Black lung payments to more than 400,000 miners and their survivors exceeded $9 billion between 1970 and 1980. They are continuing at a rate of $1 billion per year. Recent MSHA data indicate more than 50% of the longwall faces are still out of compliance with the 2 mg/m3 (0.00007 oz per cu ft) respirable dust regulation. Allowable dust limits are often further reduced owing to the presence of silica dust. This substantially increases the problem's severity. Research in the 1970s showed that by modifying the mining method through changing drum-type mining machines from high rpm shallow cutting to slow rpm deep cutting, both specific dust and energy could be reduced (Black et al., 1978; Ludlow and Wilson, 1982; Roepke, Lindroth, and Myren, 1976). The coal mining industry is using more longwall equipment to economically obtain high productivity. This high production rate, however, makes it difficult for longwalls to meet the legal dust standard. Research is showing how both these concerns may be addressed at the mining face. Results reported here explain the relationship of various major elements of the longwall system to dust generation on the longwall face. This paper is based on work completed by Foster-Miller Associates Inc. Objectives were to differentiate dust sources on the longwall face and to quantify dust levels for various elements of the shearer drum. The work was accomplished in two phases. Jonathon Ludlow, project engineer for FMA, developed and performed the necessary testing (Ludlow and Marshall, 1983). Bradley, Hadden, and Weston (1983) have done evaluations on British coal mines that produced similar results to those reported here. They found causative rela¬tionships between haulage speed, production, depth cut, drum speed, and dust generation. They also found that roof support movement increased the dustiness, whereas this work indicated that support movement had only a minor effect on total dust exposure. Both of these results are valid when the variation of mining conditions is analyzed. British mines are deeper than US mines. Therefore, roof rocks and coal are more fragmented than in the shallower US mines. Other reasons for the dust differences include the weaker shales found in Britain and the variation of roof support equipment designs between the UK and the US. Four mines in this report had rock roofs and, thus, would be less dusty. The fifth longwall mine had a coal roof, but the large cross-sectional area and high air velocity minimized dust exposure. Mines and Equipment Five underground longwall mine sites were tested (Fig. 1). All were using double-ended ranging-drum shearers (derds) with some variations in equipment. The mines and equipment details are shown in Table 1. No modification of mining equipment or operating cycles was made during the first phase of testing. The mining process observed followed the normal mine operating procedures. Three GCA RAM-1 respirable dust monitors and two vortex anemometers with cycle notations on portable tape recorders were used in each face area. The start and end of each cycle segment were recorded. This paper reports on a study of the impact of fast growing new technologies on the market for copper over the next 15 to 20 years. The greatest threat is clearly the inroads of fiber optics on the traditional market for copper in communication cable. Opportunity areas identified include heat pumps, solar power and heat, desalination, electric vehicles and others. The overall impact of new technologies on copper is expected to be modestly positive if adequately encouraged by effective R&D.

The revolution in development of new technology and practices in the gold mining and metallurgy industry continues unabated despite the ups and downs in the gold price. Some of the new cutting edge technologies are listed in Table 1 overleaf. There is room to discuss just a few of these here, but many more are identified and described in RANDOL (1992). Cutting edge advancements in gold recuperation, can be sorted into three categories. The first category includes fundamental advances that offer major improvement with significant economic benefits. Second would include evolutionary developments that offer smaller, but nonetheless commercially valuable improvements. Finally there are those "advances" that are interesting but of trivial or question­able economic benefit to industry. It is essential to adopt a "systems approach" philosophy towards developing and applying new technology. Practical innovation often comes about as a result of having to solve a problem. Innovation for innovation sake is an ego trip. Environmental management has become an important part of the system and the environmental implications of new processes and practices in the mine and mill have to be carefully considered for potential benefits and/or liabilities.
