Rutile ore is an important resource for the production of titanium products, and flotation is an efficient method to enrich rutile from its deposits. Motivated by strong commercial demand for titanium metal and alloys, substantial efforts have been made to improve the flotation efficiency of rutile. Styryl phosphonic acid (SPA) and salicyl hydroxamic acid (SHA) are commonly used as collectors for rutile flotation, and lead (Pb) ions can be used as activators for rutile flotation with SPA or SHA. Xanthates have a price advantage over SPA and SHA for the flotation of sulfides as SPA and SHA prices are higher than xanthate prices. In this work, we found that when rutile is activated by lead ions, amyl xanthate is an efficient collector for rutile flotation at pH 8. A slightly basic slurry can be readily obtained. Moreover, the price of amyl xanthate is lower than that of SPA or SHA. In this regard, this flotation strategy has the potential to be used in industry. Furthermore, the adsorption features of amyl xanthate on the Pb-activated rutile surface was investigated by experimental methods, which provides insight into the role of lead ions in rutile flotation.

With the end of active copper mining in 1983, the extensive underground mine workings and the Berkeley Pit, one of the largest open-pit mines in the United States, began to flood. Daily in- flow to the pit is about five million gallons per day, with the water level rising at a rate of 30 feet per year. To support the remedial investigation and feasibility study, a six-layer, three-dimensional MODFLOW-based ground water flow model was constructed to simulate the 9,100-acre site. The vertical domain of the model extended over 1,060 feet of elevation difference and consisted of a finite difference grid of 89 rows by 54 columns. All work was PC- based. Model boundaries were assigned to correspond to natural hydrologic features such as geologic contacts, faults, and surface water features. The fully calibrated model was approved by the State of Montana and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in the site remediation. The computer model was used to determine ground water flow velocities and contaminant travel times within the alluvial sediments adjacent to the Berkeley Pit. The purpose of the model was to predict future alluvial ground water flow directions should acid- and heavy metal-laden flood waters filling the Berkeley Pit rise up and enter the Alluvial Aquifer.

The Oglebay Norton Company has traditionally been a supplier of metallurgical grade fluorspar gravel to the American steel industry and, in the early sixties, fluorspar pellets were entered into the market. The gravel has been imported from Mexico, the pellets were produced by the Minerva Company in southern Illinois. While the acceptance of the pellets by the industry was satisfactory, overall marketing considerations caused the Minerva Company to discontinue the pelletizing operations. Thus it was that Oglebay Norton came to the decision to revive earlier plans to produce fluorspar agglomerates. A survey of the market and related factors led into two basic conclusions: 1) Because of steel plant safety considerations, flat, pillow- shaped briquets were preferable to easily rolling, marble-like pellets. 2) Briquets competitive with gravel could be produced by cutting imported, low-duty, acid grade spar to metallurgical grade by limestone and binders. A plant was built in Brownsville, Texas, and started operations in early 1970.

Lack of visibility from cabs of the large haulage trucks used in open-pit mines has become a serious safety problem. This Anaconda research program was conducted to develop a low-cost system for alerting haulage truck operators of the presence of small vehicles in their blind areas. Several systems, developed and tested to help solve this problem, are summarized and evaluated in this paper. As the size of the haulage trucks used in large open-pit mines has increased, so have the blind areas. Mine utility vehicles, pickup tucks and cars become concealed within these blind areas and, thus, become a serious safety hazard. Figure 1 shows the typical blind areas of a 150-ton haulage truck. The areas of greatest concern are those at the rear center and front right corner of the truck. It is within these areas of "no visibility" that numerous small vehicles over the years have been crushed by the large haulage trucks at various mine sites. Although the occupants in most instances, have escaped the vehicle before it was destroyed, injuries and deaths have occurred. The accidents, in most cases, were attributed to negligence or carelessness on the part of the driver of the smaller vehicle, but the problem of limited visibility still exists, and a solution is needed.

In the context of this session on "Practical Placer Mining," a projection of the present into the future first assumes that there is a future for Placers. The second assumption is that there is the combination of adequate reserves and a willing, mining investment source to finance placers. This paper will point out the opportunities on both assumptions, illustrating my positive position on the future of gold placers. In order to focus this paper more effectively, I have chosen GOLD as the subject mineral. However, it is recognized that much of the technology for exploring and mining gold placers has been applied to other alluvial deposits; including platinum, diamond, tin, and various industrial minerals (which are often referred to as "placers" though this contradicts historical definitions). Over the past 10 years I have presented several papers on the general subject of placers, most of which are listed under References. These have included topics such as exploration, evaluation, small-scale gold placer mining and decision-making, mining and processing equipment designs, and dredge-mining operations. In an attempt to identify the more promising, undeveloped placer potentials in the world I have usually mentioned the USSR and China but qualified them as being either inaccessible, or, politically difficult to obtain. However, with recent developments in the USSR, the obstacles appear to be somewhat diminished.

The debut of the sustainable development concept in the political arena, and the publication of Our Common Future in 1987, represents the starting point of present concerns and efforts associated with the sustainability of the ecosphere and its ecological and human subsystems. The sustainable production and consumption of natural resources, in particular mineral resources, represents a central aspect of the problem. In this context, an important goal has been to develop sophisticated management systems, which consider sustainability principles, in organizations within the system of minerals and metals (SMM). The development of indicators is only part of this challenge. The extractive industries (EI) as an important stakeholder of the SMM (should) have similar priorities. If embraced, this challenge offers great opportunities, one of them being the potential for advancing the understanding of how these organizations learn and change. The identification of its main determinants offers, in theory, the possibility for their management and a faster achievement of the sustainability levels to which they (should) aspire.

A new class of thionocarbamates, O-alkyl-N-allyl thionocarbamate (III), has been found to give better metallurgy than 0-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (I) for a number of sulfide ores containing copper, lead, and zinc. Data on the results of flotation tests with several such ores are presented. The improved metallurgy is believed to be due to the participation of the allyl double bond in the complex formation of the thionocarbamate on the surface of the mineral.

INTRODUCTION Previous papers by this author have discussed some of the difficulties involved with optimizing the performance of industrial flotation circuits, e.g. Klimpel (1988, 1989). The two major problems seem to be: 1) the inherent "systems" nature of the froth flotation process which leads to a great deal of self-compensation among the various operating options available and 2) the inherent variations in mineralogy, water chemistry, etc. that always seem to be present in industrial operations. In particular, the influence of reagent dosage has been emphasized in the above referenced work including an industrial system interaction denoted as the R/K trade-off, Klimpel (1984, 1987). Using a simple two parameter model for fitting time - recovery data, Klimpel (1980): [ ] where r is cumulative recovery at time t or at the t th cell, R is the long-term equilibrium recovery and K is the first-order rate of mass removal from the cell (time ), the definition of the R/K trade-off with increasing reagent dosage can be given as follows: at low dosages both R and K increase, at intermediate dosages R continues to increase but K starts to level out, and at high dosages, R may flatten out or still continue to increase but K starts to decrease, sometimes rather quickly. An illustration of this effect in a batch laboratory flotation cell is given in Figure 1. The purpose of this paper is to give a detailed plant illustration of this R/K trade-off phenomena with changing collector dosage which shows just how highly interactive the grindinglflotation system in sulfide mineral processing really is. This is one of about 20 plant level case studies that are being presented and evaluated in an upcoming book, Klimpel (1990). The particular study given here was completed in late 1979 on a copper ore of head grade 0.93% Cu. The frother being used was Dowfroth* 250 at a constant dosage of 0.15 g for each ton of solids feed to the rougher bank and the slurry pH was 10.2. The motivation of the study was to better understand the relationship of changes in feed rate (hence in particle size and state of liberation) with variations in collector dosage (potassium amyl xanthate). The major concern was to determine how much extra economic benefit could be gained by better utilizing the existing grinding mills and rougher bank consisting of eight identical cells. The remainder of the flotation circuit was also studied, including regrinding of rougher tails, but did not prove as critical as the rougher bank operation itself. It appeared from an overall economic viewpoint, the battle was being won or lost in the manner in which the rougher bank was being operated. This was not to minimize the roles of the scavenging and cleaning circuits but those portions of this particular circuit could be rather obviously operated to achieve maximum benefit given the specific output of the rougher bank. A special attempt was made to maintain constant ore type throughout the entire test program. Eight specific test conditions were evaluated including three different feed rates (and hence three different size distributions) to flotation. Tables 1 and 2 summarize the eight test conditions and overall recovery results at the end of the rougher bank for each test. A single test consisted of at least three consecutive eight-hour shifts operating at steady-state with composite cell lip samples taken over the final eight-hour shift. The concept of hypochlorite treatment prior to cyanidation in the heap leaching of low grade carbonaceous gold ores is discussed. Laboratory column leach tests using a low grade carbonaceous ore were performed to investigate the effects of pH, hypochlorite consumption and concentration, and bed height on total gold extraction. At high pH, hypochlorite stability increases and thus, hypochlorite consumption decreases. At room temperature, total gold extraction is proportional to hypochlorite consumption. However, at some point additional hypochlorite consumption does not increase gold extraction. Gold recoveries of 10% and 80% are achieved at 12 and 167 lb/ton hypochlorite consumption, respectively. Increasing hypochlorite concentration increases the rate of extraction. For a given hypochlorite consumption, gold extraction increased with decreasing ore bed height. Finally, using calcium hypochlorite results in higher gold extraction than using sodium hypochlorite at a fixed hypochlorite consumption.

This paper addresses the long-term cost and availability of primary gold production from the Republic of South Africa. Forty-four major producing or developing operations were evaluated. The analyses present estimates concerning 1) total refined gold potentially available from demonstrated resources, 2) annual production potential into the next century, 3) long-term weighted average total costs for underground mine production and surface waste reprocessing, 4) the expected annual decrease in gold production, and 5) the ability of other market economy countries to compensate for the anticipated decline in South African gold output. This paper draws upon the data and analyses of a recent Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, Minerals Availability Program appraisal that evaluated the worldwide availability of gold and silver from primary precious metal operations and as a byproduct of base metal production.

Utilization of Bucket Wheel Excavators and Overland Conveyor Systems to remove overburden provides increased productivity and flexibility to a surface mining operation. The utilization of such a system at the Texasgulf Inc. Aurora, North Carolina Mine has significantly improved the overall productivity of the mining operation. System flexibility is evidenced by adaptation to operation requirements such as mining area moves, movement of excavated overburden to designated sites, selective handling of overburden, spoil placement contouring, and providing an environmentally sound and safe operation. System productivity is evidenced by actual case studies relating to overall production, excavation rates, and cost effectiveness.

This study was developed as part of an effort by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to better understand rock-mass behavior in longwall coal mines in highly stressed, bump-prone ground. The floor-heave and nofloor- heave phenomena at a western US coal mine could not be properly simulated in numerical models using conventional shear-dominant failure criteria (i.e., Mohr–Coulomb or Hoek–Brown failure criterion). The previous numerical study demonstrated these phenomena using a user-defined model of the s-shaped brittle failure criterion in conjunction with a spalling process in the FLAC3D numerical modeling software. The results of the FLAC3D modeling agreed with the observations of the relative amounts of heave from each gate-road system. However, the FLAC3D model adopted many assumptions and simplifications that were not very realistic from a physical or mechanical perspective. To overcome the limitations of the FLAC3D model, 3DEC modeling in conjunction with the discrete fracture network (DFN) technique was performed to better understand the true behavior of floor heave associated with underground mining in an anisotropic stress field. The effect of stress rotation in the mining-induced stress field was considered by using a different geometry of rock fractures in the coal seam. The heterogeneity of the engineering properties (i.e., cohesion and tensile strength) were also considered by using Monte Carlo simulations. Consequently, the 3DEC models using the DFN technique resulted in predictions of floor heave that agreed with observations of the relative amounts of heave from each gate-road system, but the cause of heave was mainly related to the degree of anisotropy instead of the size of the pillar.

It has never been easy to finance within mining sector. Leasing may be an alternative source of finance for mining investments. Leasing is acquiring the right of usage for an asset for a definite period of time without having the ownership of it. In this study, a model for analyzing the lease financing opportunities for mining investments under risk and suitable for establishing a satisfactory leasing policy for both lessee and lessor is developed. Using the model, it is possible to obtain an expected equilibrium lease amount acceptable by both lessor and lessee and also the expected range of the equilibrium lease amount as a decision tool. First the existing leasing policies are mentioned, then the developed model is described. A case study is presented to illustrate the use of the model in establishing a leasing policy. In conclusion, the usefulness of the model is discussed.

This paper defines the elements of a basic economic model for decision making when considering a methane drainage system for an underground coal mine. A drainage system entails significant capital and operating expense; hence the decision to utilize drainage must be made carefully. The model outlines the basic structure of decision making and considers the costs and benefits when the methane is marketed and when the methane is vented to the atmosphere. The effects on mine safety and the dust levels in the mine are also considered, both in a general format and as economic variables. Sources of information for executing this decision making are provided for an actual mine decision.

The authors describe novel aspects of ground reinforcement and treatment as related to soft ground excavation for tunnels throughout the world. Insitu reinforcement for cut slopes (soil nailing), as underpinning (reticulated micropiles), and as direct tunnel support (infilaggi) is introduced. Ground treatment focuses on new aspects of permeation grouting (by the tube'a manchette system), and on jet grouting-a very powerful and positive new technique. Recent developments in equipment, materials, methods and instrumentation are reviewed, with special reference to major tunnelling projects in Italy and Singapore.

INTRODUCTION Construction of Phase I, Section A, of the Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System required that six underground stations be built using a cut and cover excavation technique. For five of these stations, soldier piles, used as support of excavation, were installed with tip elevations well below the bottom of the excavation. However, in the case of the sixth subway station, the Mondawmin Station, soldier piles were installed only through soil and decomposed rock, with the tips of the piles being stopped well above the bottom of the excavation in partially decomposed rock. Below the tips of the soldier piles, and below a cut slope where piles were not installed, the sides of the excavation consisted of partially weathered and fresh rock and were supported by a combination of rock bolts, wire mesh and shotcrete. An extensive installation of geotechnical instrumentation permitted detailed monitoring of horizontal and vertical movements of the soldier piles and the walls of the excavation. Preliminary studies indicated that the excavation support system selected for the Mondawmin Station would have several advantages over a conventional system consisting of soldier piles extending to the bottom of the excavation, braced with prestressed struts. These advantages included lower cost of installation, a decreased time required for installation, and a more open excavation for the contractor during construction of the station. The Mondawmin Station is situated in the northwestern quadrant of Baltimore City, approximately 6.4 km (4 miles) from the center of the City. New compound classes previously unknown in flotation practice of non-sulphide ore beneficiation have been developed. The presented study results consider amine salts of alkyl sulphate and alkyl benzene sulphonic acid used as primary collectors, N-methyl amides of alkyl phosphoric acids - as auxiliary modifying collectors and pentaerythritole ethers of tall oil - as flotation accelerators. These reagents synthesized from accessible raw material are almost ready for commercial production. Efficiency of the new reagents for various non-sulphide ores has been demonstrated in a series of flotation tests.

Lithium-ion battery applications are increasing for battery-powered vehicles because of their high energy density and expected long cycle life. With the development of battery-powered vehicles, fire and explosion hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries are a safety issue that needs to be addressed. Lithium-ion batteries can go through a thermal runaway under different abuse conditions including thermal abuse, mechanical abuse, and electrical abuse, leading to a fire or explosion. The NIOSH Mining program is conducting research to prevent and respond to lithium-ion battery fires for battery electric vehicles in the mining industry. In this study, experiments were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of different suppression systems including dry chemical, class D powder, and water mist for lithium iron phosphate battery pack fires. The effects of activation time and release time of the water mist system on the suppression of lithium-ion battery fires were studied. The results of this study may be helpful for developing strategic firefighting and response plans for battery-powered vehicles used in mining.

The study compares productivity, morphology, and structure of indium deposits on both cathodes, finding that nickel cathodes generally yield better results.

A laboratory investigation was performed on flocculation following the addition of polymer to slurries flowing through pipes and in-line (static) mixers. Results are presented showing the effects of flow velocity, pipe length, in-line mixer elements and the use of multiple addition points. Flocculation performance was measured by the settling rate and the supernatant turbidity. The effects of agitation and mixing time are shown to be generally consistent with the results of equivalent tests (both batch and continuous) conducted in stirred tanks.
