Differential reduction and expansion or shrinkage of hematite under the influence of intimately associated foreign oxides may be a source of stress formation and sinter degradation during blast furnace reduction. To study specific effects, synthetically pre-pared hematite powder evenly doped with 1% by weight of several elements present as oxides, was pressed into tablets and sintered at high temperature prior to reduction. Continuous thermo-gravimetric and dilatometric analyses were per-formed on the sintered tablets as these were being subjected to reduction under simulated blast furnace time/temperature/gas composition conditions up to 1183 K. These findings were coupled with observations on the microstructure of tablets removed from various stages of the reduction process.

Gold and silver processing techniques are some of the oldest in the mining industry. Gold mining of high grade veins and deposits has existed for centuries. However, only with the higher gold prices in recent years and heap leaching techniques have the low grade gold and silver deposits become feasible to mine and process economically. By mining and hauling 3,600,000 tons of ore per year at an average grade of 0.03 ounces/ton gold and 0.385 ounces/ton silver, the Zortman- Landusky operations became profitable in 1982. To maintain profitably, a stripping ratio of less than one ton of waste to one ton of ore, and mine run ore placed on the leach pads which will yield approximately seventy percent go1 d recovery.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a U.S. Department of Energy research and development facility designed to demonstrate the permanent, safe disposal of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste. The waste storage horizon is 655 m (2150 ft) below surface in bedded salt. To date the WIPP project has not emplaced any waste. There are three intake shafts used to supply air to the underground. All air is exhausted though a single return shaft. The total design airflow during normal operations is 200 m3/s (424,000 cfm). The ventilation system is designed to provide separate air splits to construction, experimental, and storage activities. Separation is achieved by isolating the storage circuit from the construction or experimental circuits with bulkheads. Any air leakage must be towards the storage area of the facility. Field studies have shown that the pressure differential necessary to maintain the correct leakage direction is susceptible to the effects of natural ventilation; therefore, extensive studies and analyses have been conducted to quantity the natural ventilation effects on the WIPP underground airflow system. A component of this work is a monitoring system designed to measure the air properties necessary for calculation of the natural ventilation pressure (NVP). This monitoring system consists of measuring dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure at strategic locations on surface and underground. The psychrometric parameters of the air are measured every fifteen minutes. From these data, trends can be determined showing the impact of NVP on the ventilation system during diurnal variations in surface climate. Both summer and winter conditions have been studied. To the author's knowledge this is the first reported instance of automatic and continuous production of time and temperature variant NVPs. This paper describes the results of the initial monitoring study. INTRODUCTION The ventilation system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad, New Mexico, is designed to perform two distinct functions. First, it supports normal mine ventilation requirements complying with all state and federal mine regulations. Second, the system is designed to prevent an uncontrolled release of radioactive contaminants from the storage and transportation areas of the facility. Although a nuclear radiation release in the facility is considered unlikely, many special features are implemented in the ventilation system to prevent the possible spread of contamination. The facility is constructed with the waste transportation and storage areas separated from the mining and non-radioactive experimental areas. The ventilation system is designed such that air leakage is from the mining and experimental areas to the storage areas. Furthermore, radiation detectors are located throughout the storage and waste transportation areas underground and an exhaust filtration building is installed on surface to prevent the possible release of radiation to the environment. For over two years the underground ventilation system has been rigorously tested and balanced. It was during this period that the adverse effects of NVP were noticed and subsequently quantified. From extensive field studies and computer models, several mitigating features were designed and constructed and special operational procedures were implemented to control the impacts of NVP. To quantify more accurately the NVP at the WIPP, a continuous monitoring system was installed. This monitoring system consists of measuring dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure every fifteen minutes at strategic locations on surface and underground. From this psychrometric data, the NVP is calculated. Fan operating pressures and flows and strategic differential pressures are recorded from the site Continuous Monitoring System (CMS). The monitoring system provides a means of evaluating how the ventilation system behaves in regard to climatic conditions and to judge the efficacy of the mitigating features and operational procedures. To the author's knowledge, continuous calculation of NVP as a function of time and surface temperature has not been previously reported. Overview of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant The U.S. Department of Energy determined that the plastic nature of bedded salt may provide the best solution to isolate transuranic (TRU) waste from the biosphere. Initial evaluations at the WIPP site began in 1974. In 1979, the United States Congress enacted Public Law 96-164 for the construction and development of the WIPP project. The mission of the WIPP is to demonstrate the safe, long-term disposal of TRU waste generated by the national defense programs of the United States. TRU waste is classified as a low to medium level waste. The waste is stored in drums and does not produce significant heat (not greater than 1 W per drum). The WIPP site is located approximately 47 km (29 miles) east of Carlsbad, New Mexico in the Chihuahuan Desert. The repository is located in the 630 m (2000 ft) thick Salado Formation. This Permian Basin salt deposit is about 225 million years old and appears to have been minimally disturbed by earthquake, faulting, and ground water activity since it was deposited. As a followup to a USBM-sponsored research project, the authors utilized the knowledge-base structure and system concepts from a Sun Sparcstation-based worker-scheduling system of the mine-management support system to develop a PC-based application. The new software adopts the nested-window concept to facilitate data collection and modification on personnel, including their availability and work priorities during a shift. The system can optimally allocate manpower on a work shift and can delineate supervisory training responsibilities. The various components of the software, including enhancements made to the original system, are described in detail.

Bechtel Civil and Minerals, Inc., one of the Bechtel group of companies, is a large engineering and construction firm that services the mining industry, among others. The firm's head, S. D. Bechtel Jr., comments on how his E&C company is dealing with the recessionary economy. First, he offered a historical perspective. About a half century ago-in the middle of the Great Depression-W. A. Bechtel and several business partners drew up a fixed price bid to build the Hoover Dam. At that moment in history, the W. A. Bechtel Co. was a modest success, but the times were troubled and uncertain. Money was scarce and a lot of contractors across the country were one project ahead of bankruptcy. The bid for Hoover was a make-or-break proposition for Bechtel, and it turned out successfully. The Hoover Dam was a no-frills operation in an isolated and harsh environment. There was plenty of hard work, long hours, and not many amenities. Controlling costs was critical. Everyone knew what had to be done, and why and what the consequences were. Today's Challenge Bechtel is now a bigger, more complex organization whose management views the current economic recession as a challenge to be met in much the same way W. A. Bechtel met the challenge of the Hoover Dam: by pulling together with a sense of purpose and direction. In many respects, Bechtel's situation today has a number of parallels to that which faced my grandfather. The company is eminently successful, but times are tough and there are plenty of signs that they could get tougher. My grandfather bet on the Hoover Dam to insure the future health of his company and I think we can work together again in that same tradition, make some tough decisions together, and the company's future can be just as promising. The first and most important requirement is to make certain that everyone understands the situation. The Bechtel group of companies are in an excellent financial position now. Its workload hit an alltime high in 1982 and it is well positioned in its principal markets. But the next two years may be critical for the company. Traditionally, Bechtel's work load lags behind general developments in the economy. Although many of its clients continue to suffer serious business difficulties, Bechtel is only beginning to feel the impact. The worldwide market for basic metals remains soft; relatively low prices and abundant supplies of oil and gas have flattened the petroleum market and made once promising synfuels projects economically unattractive; utility clients are still caught in the vise between overregulation and escalating costs. And persistently high, long-term interest rates have made capital investments expensive and difficult to justify. The company maintained a healthy workload through 1982. In some areas it has had little new work and consequently has been forced to lay off some staff as projects have been canceled or concluded. In other areas new work has tided the company over and more people have been hired. But new work bookings have fallen off, creating some uncertainty for the near future. 1983 requirements are clear, although seemingly contradictory. Belt tightening and cost reduction are necessary for Bechtel to remain healthy and competitive, enabling it to handle a possible further downturn with a minimum of turmoil and dislocation. At the same time, we need to allocate resources and funds in areas that will keep us positioned for the turn-around marketplace.

Underground mining has the potential to be one of the more dangerous industries in the United States and the world. Following recent disasters in Sago, WV; Darby, KY, and Crandall Canyon, UT, the mining industry was reminded of the need for a system to allow trapped miners awaiting rescue to survive following a disaster. To address this need, Battelle has developed a Mine Barrier Survival System (MBSS) that surpasses all current technologies and sets a new standard for keeping miners alive in the event of a fire, flood, explosion or collapse. The MBSS creates a temporary refuge for miners who cannot escape by using inflatable barriers and a post-fire atmosphere scrubbing system to define the ?safe haven? and remove CO2 and CO while replacing oxygen and providing heat. Current personal-protective systems in use are designed to provide breathing air for only a few hours when, realistically, it may take days for rescue teams to reach trapped miners. Battelle?s MBSS is designed to aid up to 15 miners for four days.

Al unite has been used as raw material for producing alumina and potassium sulfate fertilizer in Russia for many years. In the United States, this mineral has not been commercially processed though reserves of 5 to 10 billion tons of alunite ore have been estimated. Major constituents of these ores are quartz and alunite. The minerals are finely intergrown and liberation occurs below 10 µm. Adequate separation techniques for such ultrafine particles have not been developed. A new method for the beneficiation of al unite ore is proposed in this study. This method utilizes a small amount of fine magnetite upon which the liberated quartz is selectively flocculated. The co-flocculated magnetite and quartz are then separated from the alunite in a high gradient magnetic separator. Clean products, e.g., an al unite concentrate of 90% grade with 80% recovery, has been obtained from Utah ore. Techniques for selective co-flocculation of magnetite and quartz, separation of the carried quartz, and recovery of magnetite after separation are discussed.

In the early 1960's the feasibility of mathematical modeling was demonstrated in Northern Rhodesia and southwestern United States, where techniques were developed to use these models in a new approach to aid engineers in the estimation of ore reserves, mine designs, and financial evaluations. These rudimentary models closely followed the manual methods, producing ore reserves and production schedule estimates that were as accurate as the manual methods, yet were many times faster. Mines evaluated and designed using these new tools gradually came into operation during the 1970's and entered the phase at which production scheduling and ore-grade control became day-to-day problems. Management expected the number of operational engineers to be small because small planning engineering staffs had produced the original designs and operated the smaller high-grade pits. Unfortunately, the tools needed by the mine engineer to perform short-term production scheduling and ore-grade control were labor intensive; they had not yet been generally computerized. Several attempts to use the original or exploration model for these two functions were futile. While an exploration model based on data from exploration work proved sufficiently precise for overall mine design and long-term production scheduling, the model lacked the precision required for short-term scheduling and grade control.

In an effort to economically and efficiently enhance the erosion control aspects of present surface coal mine reclamation practices, the US Bureau of Mines has recently completed a two-phase research program wherein irrigation strategies and equipment developed under the first phase were field tested on three surface coal mine sites. The fundamental basis for the use of irrigation as a reclamation tool is to provide the plant moisture requirements as a supplement to prevailing natural precipitation, and thereby support the natural growth of drought-hardy native vegetation. Portable solid-set irrigation equipment and several irrigation strategies were tested on large 6-ha (15-acre) sites in Montana, Wyoming, and New Mexico. Results of these tests will be presented which include daily irrigations, precipitation levels, soil moistures, climatic data, and density cover and biomass of the native plants.

The expert system for coal preparation plant design mainly solves the crux--separation flowsheet design and optimization of product structure. There are twelve basic flowsheets available in the system which are representative of financial plants. The system can select better flowsheets automatically according to the property of feed and scale of plant. Then, it can choose the best flowsheet and product model from the better flowsheets through analysis and optimum calculation. The expert system is made up in Turbo Pascal 6.0 and consists of three sub-systems: Lump and grain coal system, coal slimes processing system, and raw coal system. Several representation methods, such as production rule, procedure, and object-oriented programming, are used to express the expert's knowledge in the system. To decide the optimum product structure, Zangwill's method is used to make an advance product model. The expert system has the performance of interpretation strategy, by 'tracer" technology and pre-arrangement text, and of learning new expert's knowledge.

"SummaryFor more than a century, ground freezing has been a construction technique used in stabilization of ground by means of lowering the temperature of surrounding soil strata. This technique is used in circumstances where conventional grouting method is unable to achieve the degree of consolidation required to prevent settlement and water ingress during the execution of underground excavation. Whilst ground freezing is effective in imparting self-supporting characteristics to the excavation profile, it poses significant challenges when it comes to the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) where sprayed concrete is used to support the freshly excavated ground. Sprayed concrete, if used in an appropriate manner, provides a fast, efficient and structurally-reliable means of supporting the structure, especially in underground construction. The evolvement in sprayed concrete technology is attributed to the development of concrete know-how, improvement of spraying technique with the use of automation spraying equipment, more in-depth understanding of sprayed concrete behavior and enhancement of materials used in production of high quality sprayed concrete Not only has this markedly escalated the prominence of sprayed concrete on wider perspective,. the positive development has also pushed sprayed concrete beyond its boundaries, enabling it to be embarked on area of application not considered possible decades ago. Nevertheless, sprayed concrete, for all its placement versatility, still depends largely on the technicality provision very similar to concrete to achieve the required quality. Parameters such as raw material grading composition, curing temperature and cement quality are some of the factors that can easily sway the quality of concrete from one extreme to another. Conducive ambient temperature is critical in ensuring optimum hydration of concrete. This is more important in sprayed concrete where temperature plays a pivotal role in influencing the early strength and long term strength development. The low temperature imposed by ground freezing is everything but ideal for competent hydration to take place. This paper outlines how the innovative use of sprayed concrete helps to overcome the adverse ambient temperature in the construction of a 110m underground pedestrian walkway utilizing ground freezing technique in Hong Kong."

Sulfur is a nonmetallic element widely distributed in nature and of great physical and economic importance. It is the 14th most abundant element in the Earth's crust (0.06%) and an important constituent of animal and plant life. Sulfur has been known and used since ancient times for a number of medicinal and industrial uses. At present, most sulfur is used to generate sulfuric acid that is used in a wide variety of industrial processes, particularly the production of fertilizer. Because of this, sulfuric acid (and hence sulfur) consumption is often regarded as a good index of a nation's industrial development. In the past, sulfur was mined from surface occurrences in several geologic environments, and was used in relatively small amounts. With time, the uses of sulfur and sulfuric acid expanded, as has the need for larger quantities of these commodities. Sulfur is now mined from both surface and underground deposits, and is recovered as a byproduct from a number of industrial processes. Despite valiant efforts and years of work by sulfur explorationists and others, many aspects of sulfur mineralization remain controversial. Almost as controversial is the spelling of the word sulfur. The English spelling sulphur commonly is used outside America and in the American sulfur mining industry, but sulfur is the correct American spelling as approved by the American Chemical Society, the American Geological Institute, and many others. Those new to the American sulfur industry often find it puzzling to be reprimanded for using the correct American spelling. Sulfur resources are abundant and widespread, but the extent to which they can be classified as reserves is constrained by pre- vailing prices and extraction technologies. At present, sulfur can be economically mined from very few deposits. The sulfur industry is roughly divisible into two sectors: voluntary (or discretionary) and involuntary (or nondiscretionary). In voluntary production, the mining of sulfur or pyrites is the sole objective, and the recovery of the resource is as complete as economic conditions will allow. During involuntary production, sulfur or sulfuric acid (termed recovered sulfur) are produced as byproducts, and the quantity of the output is dictated by the demand for the primary product. Voluntary sulfur now accounts for only about 35% of the elemental sulfur produced worldwide, and most inves- tigators believe that voluntary sulfur will be less important in the future. Sulfur sources and products are described as follows (after Barker, 1983): Sulfur Sources: Combined sulfur-sulfur that occurs in nature combined with other elements, commonly referring to sulfides and sulfates. Cupriferous pyrites-pyrite containing minor amounts of cop- per sulfides. Hydrogen sulfide-a toxic gas that occurs in petroleum and natural gas. Involuntary sulfur-sulfur produced as a byproduct in response to legislative or process mandates. Native sulfur-naturally occurring elemental sulfur. Nonferrous metal sulfides-opper, lead, zinc, nickel, and molybdenum sulfides that are processed for their metal content. Organic sulfur complex organic sulfur compounds that occur in petroleum, coal, oil shale, and tar sands. Pyrites-iron sulfide minerals that include pyrite, marcasite, and pyrrhotite. Sulfate sulfur-sulfur contained in anhydrite and gypsum. Voluntary sulfur-sulfur produced in response to market demand. Basic Sulfur Products: Acid sludge-contaminated sulfuric acid usually returned to acid plants for reconstitution. Brimstone-synonymous with crude sulfur. Bright sulfur-crude sulfur free of discoloring impurities and bright yellow in color. Broken sulfur-solid crude sulfur crushed to -8 in. Byproduct sulfuric acid-sulfuric acid produced as a byproduct of a metallurgical or industrial process, generally relating to combined sulfur sources. Crude sulfur-commercial nomenclature for elemental sulfur. Dark sulfur-crude sulfur discolored by minor quantities of hydrocarbons, ranging up to 0.3% carbon content. Elemental sulfur-processed sulfur in the elemental form produced from native sulfur or combined sulfur sources, generally with a minimum sulfur content of 99.5%. Formed sulfur-elemental sulfur cast or pressed into particular shapes to enhance handling and to suppress dust generation and moisture retention. Frasch sulfur-elemental sulfur produced from native sulfur sources by the Frasch mining process. Liquid sulfur-synonymous with molten sulfur. Introduction Trying to synthesize innovations occurring in gold processing is not simple. At present, this technology is exploding, brought about by the high price of gold. This price has compelled the mining industry, as a matter of survival, to produce gold. The frantic search for gold deposits continues, from glacial areas to tropical jungles. The search has been fruitful. New exploration techniques have helped to locate deposits. Some are amenable to conventional processing techniques. Others are in unusual settings that challenge the ingenuity of extractive metallurgists. Ore deposits containing traces of invisible gold, refractory mineralization, and impurities and deleterious materials that previously defied treatment are now being profitably processed. Metallurgists have developed various processing methods and equipment for gold ore treatment that reflect differences in ore characteristics, grade, mineralogy, reserves, topography, climate, and location. These processes can be categorized as: • For nonrefractory or readily leachable gold ores - vat leaching, heap leaching, and agitation leaching. • For ores containing free gold - gravity concentration methods, followed by mercury amalgamation, and • For refractory gold ores - flotation, roasting, pressure oxidation, followed by cyanidation leaching. In actual practice, a combination of these processes may be required. This is because gold mineralization, although usually simple, may be associated with other mineral species or with clays that make the ore difficult to treat. Furthermore, after the gold has been solubilized to form a cyanide complex, one of two important processes must be applied to recover the gold. These ore zinc cementation (Merrill-Crow process) and Carbon adsorption, desorption, and electrowinning. New techniques for leaching and recovery are also advancing. These will become the bases for the next generation of gold processing plants. Nonrefractory Gold Ores Nonrefractory ores with readily leachable gold are among the .easiest to treat. Even so, non-refractory ores from epithermal deposits are likely to contain too much clay. When these ores are damp, they may clog the screens and cone crushers. Depending on the type of process, scrubbing the crushed ore is very effective in overcoming clay problems. After dewatering, the slimes enter the cyanidation process and the thickener overflow is stripped of gold values and recycled. Semiautogenous (SAG) mills are also gaining popularity due to lower capital costs and ability to treat wet, sticky ores. If properly sized, the secondary crushing and screening plants, together with a secondary ball mill, can be eliminated. When the ore is of such a low grade that it can not support fine grinding, vat or heap 'teaching may be applicable. These systems are being actively applied in the US and elsewhere. Rapid construction and low capital costs are important features of these plants. Vat leaching is ideally suited for fast leaching ores and small tonnage deposits located in areas with harsh winters or wet tropical climates. For effective vat leaching, the ore is crushed to less than 25 mm (1 in.), agglomerated with lime or cement to control fines, and leached with sodium cyanide solution (upflow or downflow). In the neutral leaching process of zinc hydrometallurgy, the pH value directly affects the leaching rate of zinc calcine. However, due to the complex mechanism of the leaching process and frequent fluctuation of working conditions, it is difficult to control the pH value by manual control. Therefore, this study proposes a fuzzy control method based on rule extraction under multiple working conditions, and analyzes the pH control performance. Firstly, the different operating states are classified according to process mechanisms and the Pearson method. Secondly, under the framework of the active learning algorithm, the approximate linear dependence (ALD) method is introduced to iteratively select samples with rule information in the original sample set for manual annotation. Then, the support vector machine (SVM) method is used to extract fuzzy control rules in different working conditions. Finally, a fuzzy rule set is established according to the samples mapped by the support vector. The simulation results based on industrial data show that the proposed method has better control performance than conventional fuzzy control and proportional–integral–derivative (PID) control.

INTRODUCTION The increasing price of gold and silver over the past 10 years has caused increasing activity in the exploration, evaluation and development of precious metals projects. Many of these deposits are relatively low grade and short lived which makes them economically sensitive to the major project variables such as metal price, capital cost, operating cost and of course, tonnage and grade. These deposits often have a high variability (a coefficient of variation -- o/u -- of 2 to 5) and an intermixing of ore and waste, making ac- curate ore reserve estimation difficult, especially when using traditional estimation techniques. Often, the estimation errors are not the 10-20% that we see in base metal deposits, but the errors in grade and tonnage can be as high as 50%, which can obviously have a very substantial impact on project Recent developments in geostatistics when coupled with a sound geologic under- standing of the deposit can significantly improve reserve estimates of these variable precious metals deposits. Examples will be given of actual deposits where the traditional estimates were significantly different from the mining reality. An attempt will be made to explain the applicable geostatistical tools with a minimum of geostatistical jargon and without complicated formulas. The key to improving the reserve estimates is a clear understanding of the deposit geology and especially the structural controls, the use of local estimation techniques that recognize the intermixing of ore and waste and the effect of selective mining on recoverable reserves, and the use of a global reserve estimation technique to check the results of local estimation. Geologic Controls The vast majority of gold and silver deposits being mined or developed in the western United States would be classified as epithermal deposits. These are formed by hydrothermal fluids (hot water) flowing upward through the rocks and depositing the precious metals as the fluids cool or reach areas of lower pressure or favorable chemical sites. These environments are similar to present day hot springs-type environments with some deposits being clearly associated with surface hot springs such as the Homestake McLaughlin deposit in northern California. These hydrothermal deposits can occur in sedimentary rocks resulting in deposits such as those of the Carlin district or the Jerritt Canyon deposit or the hydrothermal systems can occur in volcanic rocks forming deposits such as Round Mountain, Manhattan or Paradise Peak. The mechanisms of formation were similar in either case with the solution flow controlled by geologic structure and precious metals deposited when the conditions of temperataure, pressure and chemical environment were favorable. The gold and silver hearing solutions travel through permeable faults and fracture systems depositing the metals along these channels. The grades are often highest in the central parts of these conduits (veins) with lower grades in the surrounding rocks. An understanding of the nature, distribution and orientation of these plumbing systems is important to a realistic reserve estimate. The point to be emphasized here is that, good, sound geology in the form of geologic mapping, logging of rotary chip samples and a few carefully logged core holes can signifi- cantly improve an ore reserve estimate.

"In recent years, much has been said and written on Lake Superior ores, giving the impression that the quality of the ore is deteriorating in grade and that the reserve of high grade ore is rapidly being depleted. Average analyses of ore produced in this district since 1902 show that the average quality has been practically uniform since 1910, and now closely approximates the average for the total reserves of merchantable ore.The accompanying tables and charts show the average analyses for the past ten years, weighted according to tonnage: The chart above shows graphically the average natural iron content for the old range, Mesabi, and grand total Lake Superior ore shipments since 1902.During the last ten years the decrease in iron content for shipments from all ranges except the Menominee was only' .05 of 1 per cent, while for the Menominee ores there was an increase of .052 of 1 per cent. These tabulations and the chart prove that the average quality of the total annual production of iron ore from the Lake Superior district is uniform. Mining men of the district know that all of the merchantable ores of every ore body are being mined out cleanly, and therefore the present average iron ore content of total annual shipments from the district may be expected to continue as long as the present merchantable ore reserves last. There is no logical reason to expect a decrease in the average iron content. Furnaces require ore of definite quality, and if this quality of ore cannot be produced from the natural ore bodies, it must be produced by mechanical means—that is, by concentration of low grade ores or iron formation."

Proposals have been made by two organizations, the International Standards Organization (150) and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) for a revised respirable dust criteria and criteria for thoracic and inspirable dust. These criteria yield different results than criteria based on lung deposition patterns in assessing the hazards due to dust exposure. Since these differences are a function of the size distribution of the dust an analysis of dust size distributions from various mining operations was performed to determine the amount of difference that could occur. The dust size distributions available for this analysis were taken from U.S. coal mines and from Chinese metal mines. The mass of mechanically generated dust that will deposit in the alveoli was found to be in direct proportion to the ISO/ACGIH criteria estimates in the mines studied. Therefore, respirable dust estimates for substances such as coal and silica are not a problem. Estimates of exposure to diesel exhaust in these mines, however, were not always in the same proportion to the estimated alveolar deposition. Also, concern with an excess of bronchitis among miners may not be adequately addressed by the use of samplers conforming to the ISO and ACGIH criteria. The cascade impactors used to acquire the data for this analysis require four to eight substrates per sampler. For daily dust exposure assessment this method is cumbersome and time consuming. Therefore, two new samplers have been designed to meet the need for determination of deposited dust mass. These samplers follow the lung deposition curve rather than the penetration curves proposed by the ACGIH and ISO and require analysis of only two substrates per sample.

Failure to achieve the planned production rate at new mines and mine expansions has a major adverse impact on a project's economics. A study of 60 steeply dipping tabular deposit-type underground mines showed that 35% of the mines did not achieve their production goals. An empirical formula based on the geometry of the deposit and expressed as a rate factor is applicable to select a production rate for this type of deposit. The formula is: Annual production rate = Rate factor x Rate multiplier. The appropriate rate multiplier for each category of deposit thickness and the associated risk can be used to select an appropriate production rate.

Ion exchange resins may in the future displace activated carbon in gold plants where cyanidation is practiced. Recently patented technology based on interpenetrated polyurethane polymers shows that these new materials offer significantly improved loading kinetics over both activated carbon and commercially available ion exchange resins. These polymers are not restricted either in particle size or in density and therefore offer the gold industry the potential for a further technological advancement.
