The potential for treating copper-nickel-cobalt-platinum group metal concentrates by a fully hydrometallurgical route is discussed. Processes specifically developed for treating these feeds and the potential application of the processes developed for the treatment of chalcopyrite copper concentrates are included in the evaluation. Block flowsheets are provided and the technical characteristics of various processes are compared. The current state of development for each process is summarized and probable economic impacts of the technical features are qualitatively assessed. Perceived risks and rewards associated with each technical concept are provided in the conclusions.

"Inherent rapid cooling in laser processing often produces novel materials due to nonequilibrium partitioning during solidification. This paper reports theoretical and experimental investigations on in situ alloy formation with extended solid solution.A mathematical model for determining the composition of metastable alloys and the effects of various process parameters on the composition of extended solid solution is presented. To model the nonequilibrium partitioning of solute in concentrated solution, rate equations and conservation of mass equations are used and an expression for nonequilibrium partition coefficients is derived for concentrated solution, which is realistic for laser alloying and cladding. Effect of rapid cooling on solute segregation is presented by deriving an expression for nonequilibrium partition coefficient.Experiments were performed with Ni-AI and Ni-Hf systems to obtain the composition of solute in the extended solid solution produced during laser cladding."

This paper undertakes to assess what opportunities exist for the economical recovery of non-ferrous metals from spent catalysts. The most promising recovery appears to lie with metals such as Co, Mo, Ni, W, heterogeneous catalysts used on a large scale in petroleum processing. Nickel is a metal with diverse applications on a large scale notably in hydrocarbon steam reforming and in vegetable oil hydrogenation. In addition, several of the precious metals, notably Pt, Pd, and Rh, find extensive use in fossil fuel processing and in automotive and power plant flue gas control. The hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical alternatives for processing are identified and discussed, especially with citations to illustrate reduction to commercial practice. Promising directions for adaptation of appropriate, economic separation technologies for recovery of non-ferrous catalytic metals generated in significant amounts for the secondary metal markets are identified. Newer copper SX/EW facilities often incorporate hot water heating for the cell feed electrolyte to obtain the necessary plating temperatures of 40 to 50°C. Heating is most necessary in oxide heap leaching, however it may also be required in bioleaching of secondary sulphides in colder climates or higher altitudes where most of the heat gain in the heap is lost to the environment. Given that the solution flows in the leach, organic circuit and electrolyte circuit are circular in nature, and the fact that the hot lean electrolyte is often exchanged with cooler rich electrolyte, it can be difficult to access the heating requirement for the cell feed. There are energy losses in piping, tankage, raffinate, and energy gains through the PLS and electrowinning process itself; some of these are significant and others are not. This paper discusses the overall heat balance, the relative significance of the various energy gains and losses, and describes a methodology to develop a heat balance to assist the engineer in sizing the heating equipment.

For decontamination of SO2 containing waste gases from industries such as ferrous and non-ferrous metal companies, desulfurization with hydrogen production by the reaction of Br2 and SO2 was proposed as bromine-sulfur (BS) process. In this process, SO2 is fixed as H2SO4 in the presence of Br2 and H2O forming H2SO4 and HBr. Then hydrogen is produced by the decomposition of HBr and Br2 as byproduct is recycled. The reaction of Br2, SO2 and H2O was found not to occur in liquid phase but to occur in vapor one. The production ratios of H2SO4 and HBr showed a maximum at temperatures around 60 oC. The highest production ratio was obtained at 70 oC with a mixing ratio of Br2:SO2:H2O=1:1:10. The experimental results were discussed with thermodynamic consideration.

In the early 1940's, the Caron ammonia ? ammonia carbonate leach process was used to produce nickel from Mayari ores at the Nicaro plant in Oriente Province, Cuba. While plant operation was generally successful, it was not broadly economical and was shut down. The plant was later restarted in the 1950's and a number of investigations initiated to resolve the more serious operational and performance issues. Processing steps studied included iron reduction (chemistry ? nickel and iron, reductant, equipment), ore variability (homogeneity and consistency of mineral concentrations, serpentine vs. laterite), leach solution strength, nickel recovery (temperature ? reduction and leaching, reoxidation) and a variety of other topics. These studies and their findings will be discussed. Caron himself obtained good results on these ores in the laboratory. They could not be duplicated in the field, the reasons for which will be reviewed. (Note: the ore looked like garden dirt; charcoal made from palm trees was one of the reductants attempted; and ammonia was the leach solution. Mixing the three, so to speak, was to yield nickel.)

Tri-calcium aluminate (TCA) is a dominant alkaline component of the red mud residue from the Bayer process. A method being considered for industrial implementation partially neutralizes the residue by contacting it with gaseous CO2. This paper outlines the chemistry of CO2neutralisation of TCA under conditions relevant to the treatment of Bayer residue. CO2 neutralisation of the liquor is fast. It results in the formation of amorphous aluminium hydroxide and dawsonite that agglomerate together. Neutralisation of solid TCA is slower and leads to the formation of calcite, dawsonite and amorphous aluminium hydroxide. The dissolution of TCA in partially neutralised slurries causes pH reversion. However the carbonated solutions contain a store of bicarbonate that can supply aqueous carbon dioxide to complete the transformation. The pH at which the carbonation is carried out will affect the degree of TCA transformation during the carbonation process. In particular, if the pH of the carbonation is too low (near 7.0), calcite precipitation is inhibited and the degree of transformation is low. Controlling the carbonation pH helps to optimise the neutralisation process.

Environmental and public concerns and the banned use of cyanide for the recovery of gold in some parts of the world have heightened the search for an alternative lixiviant to cyanide. Thiosulfate appears to be the most promising alternative to cyanide due to thiosulfate being non-toxic, relatively cheap compared to cyanide and generally gold recoveries are similar to those of cyanide. The most widely researched thiosulfate process is one where copper ions and ammonia are added to the solution. This paper reviews the leaching of gold in thiosulfate solutions and the contributions of the research at Monash University to the understanding of the gold oxidation reaction in thiosulfate solutions, the solution chemistry when copper ions, ammonia and oxygen are present, the influence of the changing solution chemistry on the gold leach kinetics, and the application of thiosulfate in the leaching of gold from ores. It is clearly shown that the gold oxidation rate is hindered in thiosulfate solutions. In the presence of copper ions the gold oxidation rate though is significantly enhanced and thus is why copper(II) is more effective than other oxidants in the thiosulfate leach system. The copper-ammonia-thiosulfate leach solution chemistry is shown to be very complex, especially in the presence of oxygen as the rate of thiosulfate oxidation increases and the majority of the copper ions are not maintained in the copper(II) oxidation state. The thiosulfate oxidation rate must also be maintained low as an intermediate thiosulfate oxidation product hinders gold leaching. In optimising the recovery of gold from ores with copper-ammonia-thiosulfate leach solutions it is important to evaluate and minimise any negative effect an ore may have on the leach solution chemistry and hence gold leaching.

"Melt loss is usually one of the highest individual cost items in the operation of ah ingot casting facility. While melt loss and the resulting cost for the entire facility is usually well known (at least via standard cost accounting), dross generation and melt loss for individual unit operations within the plant are usually not known. Thus, the financial impact of various practices, alloys and scrap types is not known. Development of an accurate, relatively low-cost technique for measurement of melt loss at commercial scale would aid in understanding melt loss for existing units, as well as evaluation of the melt loss impact of alternate processes.This paper will describe a methodology developed at Alcoa for accurate and inexpensive measurement of melt loss at commercial scale. The methodology has been used to evaluate the impact of scrap type, melting practices, and dross treatment technology on melt loss."

After privatization in 1999, PASAR Corporation initiated a plant modernization program to optimize the performance of the smelter by increasing plant availability. This initiative required operational adjustments to the converting and anode furnace procedures, to support the higher throughput in the flash furnace, while continuing to meet government environmental regulations. The major shift in production direction was to eliminate the 30-35 day maintenance shutdown every two years, and replace it with a 15-day shutdown. This paper discusses the changes implemented in the converter and anode operation that have resulted in an increase of 10% in flash furnace throughput, an 18% increase in blister output, to 170 tonnes per cycle, and a converter campaign tonnage increase of 10%. Since privatization, PASAR has instituted a series of ?management of change? programs that have facilitated an industrial cultural change needed to achieve the company?s vision, mission and strategic goals.

A spouted bed electrode (SBE) has been used, in laboratory experiments, to electrowin zinc from zinc chloride electrolytes with the objective of determining the suitability of this electrode for commercial application. Zinc was successfully electrowon at current densities ranging up to 4,38 lA/m2, which are an order of magnitude larger than those used at present in the zinc industry. Current efficiencies, for the cell with the SBE, have been as high as 90% and DC energy consumption as low as 2.8 kWh/kg zinc deposited. The performance of the cell has been measured as a function of current density, anode type, cell diaphragm, addition of tributyl ammonium chloride and purging of the electrolyte (to remove dissolved chlorine).

"Today there is a growing demand for strip of superior steels with specifically tailored technological properties. Especially strips of high-strength, micro-alloyed steel grades applied to manufacture longitudinally and spiral-welded pipes are a growth market. Tubes are generally required to have high strength and sufficient toughness values and thus favour specific hot strip microstructures. The correlation of chemical analysis, process parameters and mechanical properties with microstructural features is still a challenging task. During the last decades, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) have become useful tools for the characterization of complex microstructures. The EBSD data provides an immense variety of post-processing possibilities, e.g. related to grains, grain boundaries, misorientations or texture. This paper highlights the results of an advanced analysis of microstructures representing industrial produced hot-rolled strips and presents an approach to define and quantify some essential microstructural parameters.IntroductionHigh-strength microalloyed steels have been used for the production of welded pipes for more than 30 years. However, the alloy design of pipeline grades is being continuously modified and the process technology optimized because of the increasing high strength-toughness combination requirement for pipeline steels. Compact strip production (CSP®) technology is an upcoming promising route for the production of high-quality pipeline steel grades [1]."

Creating technology, securing patent rights, and managing a patent portfolio are time-sensitive and dynamic activities. Agreements should be in place with technology partners (employees, contractors, joint venture partners), prior to embarking on research and development projects, so as to mitigate future disputes over patent rights. Technology partners should be educated on patent law basics so as to be mindful of patent bar triggering events. Accurate records must be maintained to capture information relevant for preparation and filing of patent application, including subject matter, names of inventors, and invention date. Developed inventions should be evaluated for whether to file for patent protection, delay patenting until technology is further developed, maintain trade secrecy, or effect deliberate public disclosure. Once decision is made to file for patent protection, time is of the essence, and application for patent protection should be filed as soon as possible, as many countries award patents on a "first-to file" basis. Decisions on where to file are made having regard to potential competitive advantages versus cost considerations, and can be delayed by taking advantage of priority rights recognized in patent legislation of most countries. Once patents are granted, competitors must be policed for potential patent infringement, and legal action may be necessary to prevent patent infringement.

Synergists can be used in solvent extraction to improve the selectivity of extractants for metals. Research work carried out by the SX group at the AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy / CSIRO Minerals has shown that the pH isotherm of nickel with Versatic 10 was significantly lowered by the addition of the synergist Acorga CLX50. The paper discusses how this synergistic shift can be used to alleviate a gypsum formation problem at Bulong nickel laterite operation in Western Australia. Metal pH isotherms were obtained with Versatic 10 and synergist CLX50 using synthetic leach solutions. In terms of pH50, the extraction order of the metals with 0.5 M Versatic 10 alone was Cu > Zn > Ni > Co > Mn > Ca > Mg, whilst the extraction order with Versatic 10 and 20% by volume CLX50 was Cu > Ni Zn > Co > Mn > Ca > Mg with the pH50 (Mn-Co) significantlyincreased. This is significant because the isotherms of valuable metals Ni, Cu, Co and Zn shift more towards low pH than those of the waste metals Mn, Mg and Ca, resulting in a possible good separation of Ni, Cu, Co and Zn from Mn, Mg and Ca. The use of intermediate precipitation, solids/liquid separation and re-leach in the three Western Australian nickel plants make these processes complicated and costly in capital and operation. The research work carried by the SX groupat the AJ Parker Centre has led to the development of direct SX (DSX) processes to recover nickel and cobalt from leach solutions using synergistic organic systems. Semi-continuous tests with a BHP Billiton pilot plant leach solution showed that Ni and Co together with Zn and Cu were separated from the major impurities, Mn, Mg, Ca, and Cl, in the first SX circuit. The co-extracted impurities were easily scrubbed. After stripping, Ni and Co together with Zn and Cu were concentrated, resulting in a much smaller second SX circuit in the down stream processes.

Fouling of heat recovery process equipment may significantly decrease their heat transfer efficiency. In Copper Flash Smelting process flue dust tends to form build-ups on the heat recovery boiler walls. Thermal transportation properties of copper flash smelting flue dust and its components have been studied. The effects of porosity and temperature on thermal transportation properties have also been determined. The results indicate that dust and its components are effective thermal insulators and build-up layers on the boiler walls are likely to decrease greatly the heat transfer efficiency of the boiler. Decreasing dust layer porosity has a strong increasing effect on thermal conductivity and increasing temperature has a slight decreasing effect on thermal conductivity. The results may be used in CFD-modelling and optimisation of the process.

"EXECUTIVE SUMMARYThe automotive industry's search for increased fuel efficiency through component weight reduction has driven the growth in consumption of magnesium metal in the form of die cast alloys. This trend, which began in North America and should soon accelerate in Europe, will require enhanced recycling services since each tonne of metal used for die cast parts production produces about 500 kg of scrap.Currently, the European die cast market is plagued by very high tolling prices for scrap recycling due to lack of competition and high transport costs due to the distances between the scrap generator and the recycling facility. This situation clearly increases the cost of magnesium die cast components and reduces magnesium's competitiveness with other materials. The challenge for the magnesium industry in the short term is to provide cost ·effective recycling solutions for the die cast industry. In addition effective recycling, in the medium to long term, is needed for the anticipated large volumes of secondary or used scrap that will become available as the die cast components reach the end of their life cycle. This paper will present The Antheus Integrated Magnesium Project as a Novel approach addressing some of the key recycling related issues facing the magnesium industry, in particular the die casters. The paper outlines the many advantages of an integrated magnesium metal park, in an overall goal of increasing magnesium metal's competitiveness."

This paper presents a practical approach for utilizing a computer model to determine the mass balance for a typical UBC recycling complex - starting with raw materials input, through scrap preparation, delacquering, melting, alloy adjustment and casting. This model is especially concerned with metal unit losses throughout the recycling complex with emphasis on metal losses at the melting furnace. The model also addresses the application of hardener alloys, metallurgical salts, chlorine for demagging, and reagents for acid gas emissions control. Other issues addressed are dross generation, acid gas emissions and dirt and fines to landfill. One benefit of the model is the conversion of annual production objectives to hourly production rates and resource requirements taking into account production schedules, maintenance downtime, and operations inefficiencies.

The process of Tribofinishing is investigated as a memns to reacha state of quality for the surface teated. During the said process there occurs mass transferat the interface of the piece to be treated and the abrasive charge (abrasive plus additives). This stiuation is studied for Titanium as a possibility for application in prosthesis. With these results is intended to produce a model of the mass transfer that would allow having further control of the process.

Kosaka smelter is a copper smelter located in Akita Prefecture in the northern part of Japan. It has treated complex sulfide concentrates for a long time. Recently, in addition to metal production from ores, the company has been working on the recycling of metals by using this metallurgical technology. Metals recovered are primarily gold, silver, palladium, copper and lead from copper scraps, electronic board scraps, silver oxide batteries, spent lead acid batteries, semiconductor chips, cellular phones, and automotive emissions catalyst. In particular, electronic board scraps and cellular phones can be valuable raw materials. These electronic scraps are fed into the flash smelting furnace after size reduction in a shredder that was introduced in 1999. Due to the growing demand for personal computers and cellular phones, the amount of electronic board scraps available for recycling increased. At present, these secondary materials are good raw materials for Kosaka smelter since the smelter is already used to dealing with complex raw materials. The recycled metals account for up between 5 and 20 percent of the total production at Kosaka Smelter. In particular, over 90 percent of the palladium in the secondary materials can be recovered.
