In a recent research effort, a laminated overburden loading model (as implemented in LaModel3.0 was compared with the results of ARMPS 2010, and the laminated overburden model was found to more accurately classify a ARMPS database of 52 deep cover case histories by a factor of 60% versus 54%. However, the LaModel analysis of each case study required several days to complete, as compared to a requirement of only several minutes for each ARMPS analysis. In the research presented in this paper, a computer code (ARMPS-LAM) has been developed to effectively implement the laminated overburden model into the ARMPS program. This program takes the basic ARMPS geometric input for defining the mining plan and loading condition and then automatically develops, runs, and analyzes a full LaModel analysis of the mining geometry to output the stability factor on the Active Mining Zone(AMZ), all without further user input. The present laboratory version of ARMPS-LAM can be run in batch mode; therefore, the ARMPS 2010 database of 645case histories can be analyzed very quickly. In an initial logistic regression analysis of this database, the ARMPS-LAM program was seen to be slightly more accurate than ARMPS 2010 by a factor of 71% versus 63%.

Combustion processes, comminution and materials handling can generate airborne particulates. Regulation of these particulates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) is becoming progressively more stringent, and regulations will soon include ?nanoparticulates,? which are particles finer than 100 nanometers (0.1 mm). Nanoparticulates are believed to have significant negative health effects due to their high surface area and reactivity. Although it was argued that nanoparticulate concerns were only important for combustion, studies at Michigan Technological University have shown that materials handling and comminution release significant quantities of nanoparticles into the air. Laboratory studies have shown that the use of sodium metasilicate reduced airborne particles finer than 10 mm (PM10) by 86% and particles finer than 2.5 mm (PM2.5) by 80% for iron ore. Additional studies were conducted that revealed that nanoparticulate emissions were present in the types of operations conducted at pyrometallurgical facilities.

Occupational exposure to hand transmitted vibration (HTV) arises from the hand held powered tools extensively used in the mining and construction industry such as rock drills, chipping hammers, chain saws etc. Regular exposure to HTV is the major cause of a range of permanent injuries to human hands and arms which are commonly referred to as hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). In addition to this, the percussive tools generate overall sound power levels in excess of 110dBA in most cases. Such a high sound power level greatly exceeds the maximum permissible exposure limit (PEL) of organizations such as National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Long term occupational exposure to this noise has been diagnosed as the main reason for permanent hearing loss in the operators. It is therefore important to develop an understanding of the mechanisms which lead to these high vibration and sound levels and in order to do this a detailed computational model of a pneumatic chipping hammer has been made. This paper presents a nonlinear computational model of a pneumatic chipping hammer. In order to better understand the dynamics of the chipping hammer, the hammer was subdivided into components that are shown in figure 1 (a) (based on a chipping hammer manufactured by Atlas-Copco). The hammer mainly consisted of a center body, a moving piston and a chisel. Compressed air is used to drive the piston inside of a cylinder and on the downward stroke this piston impacts the chisel to create the hammer effect. The machine has one pneumatic valve and this valve regulates the air supply either to the upper chamber or to the lower chamber. The valve changes according to the relative pressures in the two chambers and the supply pressure. There are also twelve different exhaust ports at two positions along the cylinder labeled upper ports and lower ports. As the piston moves the ports can be closed or open (allowing exhaust). Fundamentally, the computational model was made up of two different sub-models, a fluid model and a structural dynamic model as shown in Figure 3 (a) and (b) respectively. The first sub-model takes into consideration the fluid dynamics of the machine since the hammer is driven by compressed air. Equations for the mass flow rate though bleed orifices (assuming an isentropic process) 1 is used to determine the mass flow into and out of the upper and lower chambers. Sensor-based ore sorting is being increasingly used to reduce the amount of low-grade and waste material processed in mineral concentrators. This type of preconcentration provides bottom-line benefits to users by reducing the amount of energy, water and consumables, as well as reducing capital cost. Existing operations can increase metal production, while previously uneconomic deposits and low-grade stockpiles can also be exploited. The technology can also be used to separate ore types for selective processing. The path to implementing sensor-based sorting may include:• geometallurgical evaluation• first inspection testing to investigate sensor response• bench-scale testing where sensor selection is not obvious or for difficult applications• performance testing in full scale sensor-based sorting machines• larger scale site-based piloting with a temporary semi-mobile plant installation. Sorting requires material to be suitably prepared and presented to the machines and typically this consists of crushing and screening to limit top size and optimise liberation. However, where material streams are suitably sized and prepared, additional equipment may not be required (e.g. the sorting of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) Mill pebble streams).This paper presents a case study of economic upgrading of gold ore, by preconcentrating with sensor-based ore sorting. The case study examines sorting amenability, test work, the feasibility study through to implementation, with associated flow sheet development. The development process is analysed and evaluated with a view to rationalising the process for development of future projects. Dissolved and suspended solids are present in the free water of tailings ponds. This Bureau of Mines study was designed to identify the influences of the slime zone in preventing these solids from reaching the environment outside the tailings pond. The finite-element method was used to determine the rate of discharge of subsurface water from the Van Stone tailings pond in northern Washington. The slime zone was sampled and tested for the first time, and results were interpreted and incorporated into the mathematical model. Computer results were verified by installing and monitoring piezometers in the field and by a simulated (16- by 1/2- by 3 foot) laboratory model. Output from the numerical model defined critical seepage zones and revealed that proper pond design and maintenance can reduce pond seepage losses to a minimum. Minimization of seepage requires maintaining the pond water level over the slime zone. Sufficient physical, chemical, and limnological data were collected and analyzed to conclude that the only realistic reflection of synergistic effects is obtained by study of the indigenous biota in combination with quantitative chemical and physical data. Proper planning and management of the milling and waste disposal operations are the key to minimal pollution.

Although the Diamond that is cut and polished and made up into an article of jewellery, is so well known, there are, comparatively speaking, very few outside the industry who know this beautiful crystal in the crude state, as turned out ofNature's laboratory, and the means employed in winning this precious stone.This article is written with the endeavour to give the reader some idea of the geological formations in which the Diamond occurs, and as it is reported that Diamonds have been found in Western Australia, as well as in other parts of the Australian Colonies, a few hints as to the means employed in working the ground in South Africa may be of use to those intending to prqsecute the search in this country. The general geological formation of the South African Diamond Fields is Lacustrine shales and sandstones, intersected by dykes of various eruptive rocks, varying considerably in their character. and in places vesicular in texture, the vesicules being more or less filled in with zeolites by permeating waters.

The coal pillars in room-and-pillar mining method are subjected to vertical stress due to overburden rock mass and horizontal stress relieve due to entries excavation around them. Some coal mining companies are applying rock bolts and steel straps to improve the pillar strength, consequently to reducing the pillar size and increasing coal recovery. This kind of approach deserves some discussion, whether it is pillar reinforcement or just rib support. The efficiency of pillar reinforcement (or rib support) is directly related to the initial load capacity of coal pillar, the type of excavation, and the width to high ratio of the pillar. The objective of this paper is to understand the mechanism of pillar reinforcement (or rib support) using rock bolts and steel straps on pillar ribs. Numerical simulation taking into account the relations listed above. The results showed that the increase of coal pillar strength is very short, and there is no influence on improvement of load capacity of pillar. However, the rib support avoids block falling, rib failure, and displacement, reducing the pillar failure propagation into the pillar center. Keywords: coal, pillar reinforcement, room and pillar.

The Wattle Dam gold mine, located near Kambalda in the Goldfi elds region of Western Australia has recently progressed to an underground operation and is now believed to be Australia's highest grade operating gold mine. At end of March 2010, the deposit had reserves of 132 000 t @ 20.8 g/t for 88 000 oz and by the end of June 2010 had produced 110 000 oz from open-pit and underground mining. The Wattle Dam main lode is characterised by very coarse gold mineralisation. Gold occurs as cm to decimetre fracture fi ll veinlets, shear surface coatings and erratic fl akey clusters. The gold has no quartz or silica association and lacks adjacent low-grade mineralisation or alteration assemblage. Geologically it appears atypical of Archaean lode gold deposits and may represent an extreme end member of the type. Definition of the lode is largely dependent on effective geological identification of the host lode zone and an understanding of the erratic distribution and grade behaviour of a high-nugget, coarse gold deposit. Dependence on assay data to defi ne the lode zone would result in the deposit being mined incorrectly and much of the deposit being left unexploited. This paper discusses the geology, coarse gold characteristics and defi nition methods which are used to successfully defi ne and mine the deposit.

"Viceroy Resource Corporation of Vancouver, B.C. has recently developed the Brewery Creek Mine, an open pit heap leach gold mine 55km East of Dawson City in Yukon, Canada. Mineable reserves are 17.1 million tonnes of ore grading 1.45 grams/tonne, containing 24.8 tonnes (797000oz) of gold. Ore processing employs the heap leach technology using run of mine ore. 1996 highlights included construction of 158,000 m2 of leach pad, placing 1.9 million tonnes of ore at a grade of 1.46 gpt on to the leach pad, construction and successful commissioning of the ADR plant, and pouring of the first gold bar on November 15th.Permitting this mine has drawn significant attention because the heap leach technology, while proven in other jurisdictions, has not been used in Yukon where winter site temperatures routinely reach -45 C for extended periods.IntroductionFollowing a comprehensive governmental and public review of the proposed project, a Class A Yukon Water license was issued in August, 1995. Construction started in 1995 and leaching commenced in October 1996. The Brewery Creek Mine is in Yukon, the home of the Klondike Gold Rush nearly 100 years ago. This is the only part of Canada not glaciated in the Wisconsin advance so there is oxide ore resulting from about 80,000 years of weathering -unique in Canada. Discontinuous permafrost is present on site and has required special consideration in the design. Winter temperatures dip below minus 50 C, demanding an approach to mining and leaching that is different than in more temperate climates.Project DescriptionThe mine comprises 8 shallow, largely oxidized gold deposits along a 7km corridor. An 8 year mining program will extract 17.1 million tonnes of ore grading 1.45 grams/tonne, containing 24.8 tonnes (797,000 oz) of gold. The strip ratio will be 1.35: 1. Overall gold recovery is projected at 78%. There will be 2.3 million tonnes of ore placed on the pad annually, with an average of 2.57 tonnes (83, 000 oz) of gold recovered per year. Because of the cold winters, the mine will operate approximately 210 days per year, while the leaching process will operate on a year round basis. Run of mine ore is placed on the heap 150 days per year. The recovery process utilizes conventional sodium cyanide leaching , carbon adsorption, caustic desorption, and on-site smelting. Peak employment during mining is 145 and winter staff is reduced to 45."

The dewatering of fine particles is energy intensive and often requires costly capital expenditures. To address these issues, a series of advanced dewatering technologies have been developed at Virginia Tech. These include novel dewatering aids that enhance the performance of existing filtration equipment and an innovative hyperbaric centrifuge that utilizes both air pressure and centrifugal force for dewatering. The moistures obtained using these processes are 30-50% lower than those obtained using conventional methods. Another dewatering technology, known as the hydrophobic displacement process, can reduce product moistures to a level previously attainable only through the use of thermal dryers. This article presents test results obtained with these various advanced dewatering technologies along with estimates of the power consumption for each process.

Keywords: Pyrochemistry, Salts Treatment, Distillation The pyrochemical purification of metal generates spent salts. When this metal is an actinide such as plutonium, the slags cannot be discarded and are thus disposed in nuclear facility. In order to handle with these slags, the decision has been taken to reduce stored quantities. The development of a pyrochemical treatment is in progress in the CEA Valduc centre. The feed salt, typically composed of various Pu and Am species contained into monovalent or divalent chloride matrix, is first oxidized to convert the actinides into oxides. Then the chlorides are separated from the actinide oxides by vacuum distillation. Temperatures higher than 750°C for monochloride salts mixture NaCl/KCl and higher than 1100°C for divalent CaCl2 base salts, are required to produce an industrial flow of vaporization. Inactive qualification of the process for NaCl/KCl base salt has been carried out with lanthanide surrogates. Then, a pilot equipment, called distillator has been designed and built for production-scale distillation of NaCl/KCl and CaCl2 oxidized plutonium salts. Industrial flows of vaporization have been obtained with this pilot equipment : about 4 g/cm²/h for NaCl/KCl at 800?900°C and 1 Pa, and more than 1,5 g/cm²/h for CaCl2 base salts between 1000?1200°C at 0.1 Pa. The last step, now in progress, is the integration of the distillator into a glove box.

What is not measured cannot be managed. This is true of most things, including a furnace lining. This paper describes a Lining Management System used for this purpose. It provides the operations staff with a management tool to predict long term lining life and acts as a process optimisation tool. It alarms and records upset furnace conditions. Outputs from the system are described as presented through a specially developed software package and interface. It includes vertical and horizontal furnace sections showing estimated isotherms through the lining as well as the furnace bath. It also shows calculated heat flux values, estimated lining wear and the freeze layer profile. A novel three-dimensional display is described which provides the operator with a big picture view of the furnace crucible profile under real time operating conditions. The powerful trending facility for analysing both measured and calculated values is discussed. The required instrumentation hardware as well as the installation thereof is described, with special reference to an electrically insulating thermocouple socket design. Finally feedback is provided on the first year?s performance of the system installed on an open ferrochrome furnace at Assmang Chrome, Machadodorp, South Africa.

Dump truck operators are exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV) levels that exceed the International Standard Organization (ISO) 2631-1. The WBV level measured by RMS acceleration value, for operator comfort, and long-term health and safety is under 0.315 m/s2 by these standards. However, fundamental research by Frimpong and Aouad (2009, 2012) and field experimental study by Kumar (1999) have shown that operators are exposed to extreme WBV levels exposing them to injuries and musculoskeletal diseases in the long-term. These extreme WBV values in the vertical direction are equal to 3.56 m/s2, 1.12 m/s2 and 0.87 m/s2 for the operator?s seat, lower-back and cervical regions, respectively. Ball mills are commonly used for regrinding operations in the mineral processing industry. But, in recent times, efforts are being made at the introduction of stirred mills particularly for those instances where very fine grinding is required. Media type (steel shot, glass beads, alumina balls and crushed quartz), media size, mill speed and the number of passes required to obtained the target product size are studied. The product size and energy consumption are used in the evaluation of the test results. The grinding media size, shape, density, filling ratio, mill circumferential speed and grinding time play a distinct role in product size fineness.

The lead-acid battery recycling is a major industrial activity (more than four million tonnes recycled lead per year) that generates large amounts of toxic wastes such as lead slag, mattes and acidic sludge, besides airborne emissions. This is a waste-producer industry that needs a definitive solution to avoid its negative environmental impact and getting a sustainable lead production. That is the principal target of the CLEANLEAD technology, which properly combines both hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical routes aiming to get zero-waste production, reducing the use of energy and resources in all phases of battery reprocessing, and consequently, greatly decreasing the operating cost. There will be no toxic emissions to land, water or air, and obtained products are pure lead metal or pure lead oxide, and commercial gypsum instead of waste sludge.

Over recent years the trend in Australia has been towards the definitions of sustainable development which emerged from the 1992 Rio Summit of retaining a commitment to ecological integrity, but also incorporating social and economic dimensions of sustainability. Sustainable development may be seen as maintaining and enhancing:natural capital: defined as all natural resources, both environmental and those of traditional economic value; manufactured capital: made by human kind; including produced goods, infrastructure and built environment; human capital: defined as the health, well-being, intellectual capabilities and spiritual welfare of individuals; and social capital: defined as social relations and institutions within and between societies, their norms and functionality (Ameef, 2002). This paper will endeavour to assess the challenges and opportunities facing the professionals and their Institute in the minerals industry in Australia because the MMSD Global and Regional Australia Reports do not, in the authorÆs opinion, adequately address the æhuman capitalÆ input into the current or future development of the minerals industry, in particular, the sustainability of the professionalsÆ skills, knowledge and experiences in a global context.

Modern constructions of electric ferroalloy furnaces are still based on applying in the lower "liquid" areas the standard carbon materials. What can be illustrated by the experience from several years, in the part of tap hole, hearth walls and bottom, is that so-called carbon or semigraphite microporous materials are successfully being applied. These materials, compared to the standard carbon, give better resistance to the attack by liquid metal and other wear factors. Generally this group includes materials characterised by considerable share of pores of diameters below1µm (significantly exceeding 90% of total porosity). The microporosity increases the resistance to the infiltration of the liquid metal. The effect of microporosity can be obtained by introducing silicon (or its compound) additive to materials based on electrically (or gas) calcined anthracites, electrographite and binder. Moreover, by introducing other ceramic additives, the microporous materials are more resistant to dissolution by the liquid metal. Observing the trends of "improving the materials" in the last years, it is clearly seen that the share of non-carbon additives is bigger and bigger, so we can reasonably speak of rather carbon-ceramic materials. In this paper, the survey of the most important quality criteria, which must be met by the carbon furnace linings, as well as the new testing methods will be presented.

A Cu-conducting solid electrolyte was used to develop the sensor. Instead of measuring the potential across the electrolyte from the reference material to the Cu-containing phase, a potential was applied and the stable current measured. This gave reasonable readings for copper-tin alloys, which agreed with the theoretical calculations, but was less satisfactory in the case of mattes because the surface area of electrolyte presented to the matte phase varied from sensor to sensor. To overcome this problem the potential was applied, the current was measured and then reversed and remeasured and the ratio of the currents was calculated. The current ratio is shown to be independent of the resistance of the electrolyte and the surface area of the electrolyte offered to the melt, but strongly dependent on the activity of the copper

One of the safety and health research programs of the former U.S. Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Research Center was the evaluation of technology that will provide remote-controlled operation of mechanized equipment in underground room-and-pillar mining. The purpose of this effort was to enable workers to be located away from the hazardous and unhealthful coal extraction area (the face). As part of this program, advanced machine navigation and control technologies were developed for underground room-and-pillar and highwall coal mining that can be applied to commercially available mining equipment. These technologies use off-the-shelf components and a flexible control software architecture to minimize the effort required to adapt them to mining equipment. An accurate, reliable navigation system that can provide the mining machine's heading and location is a critical requirement for a remote-controlled mining system. After investigating several different types of navigation sensors, researchers selected the Honeywell Ring Laser Gyro Inertial Navigation System (INS) as showing the most promise. It was installed on a continuous mining machine at our Mining Equipment Test Facility. Extensive testing at an open pit (OP) site was also performed. This report describes the INS as it was employed on the mining machine in the laboratory, in the field, and OP tests, and provides the accuracy and performance results of the OP and highwalltests.

Barrick Gold’s Bullfrog underground mine, near Beatty, NV, was established as an after-thought to the main open pit. As open pit ore dwindles, the underground mining became increasingly more important as an ore source, and to the overall economics of the project. This situation is similar to many other mines. Today, there is a move towards underground mining in the United States. There are inherent problems in starting and operating underground mines in the shadow of any open-pit operation. Several attempts were made at the Bullfrog Mine for productive increases. Some were successful, while others were not.
