The technology has evolved that allows EPB TBMs to cross into areas that with the latest in conditioning and special design considerations are now possible to mine. This paper will review the various recent developments and those projects where these new techniques have been applied.

This paper deals with the significance of Explosive Energy in the optimization of blast design parameters, and the benefits emerging out of it. It is based on the original work done by the author in developing and successfully implementing a site-specific software package on ‘Blast Design Optimization’ at Kudremukh Iron Ore Mine in India with a production level of 22.5 million tonnes of crude ore and off-take of Explosives of approximately 5500 tonnes per annum. The software package has yielded tangible results in effecting reduction in Explosive Consumption, substantial savings in the Cost of Explosive, besides Environmental Improvements by way of attenuation of Blast Induced Ground Vibrations as well as Air-Blasts. By carrying out regular ‘Regression Analysis’, and determination of the Rock Constants, it has been possible to further develop software packages as well as prediction curves for prediction of Peak Particle Velocity, Safe Charge of Explosive, Air-Blasts etc. A model has also been developed for the prediction of ‘Fly Rock’ although at KIOCL, fly rock does not pose any problem.

The mineralogy of nickel slags from the flash smelter of Western Mining Corporation Ltd. at Kalgoorlie was studied. Residual magnesium silicates in the sulphide concentrates raise the melting point of the slag and result in the formation of magnesium-rich olivines. Addition of lime lowered the melting point, and, in slowly cooled slags, resulted in the formation of a pyroxene.Magnetite and sulphides were also present in all slags.The converter slags contained an olivine near fayalite in composition, together with wiistite, magnetite, and a little sulphide.Accretions from the hearth of the flash furnace were largely composed of magnetite with subsidiary olivine similar in composition to those of the flash furnace slags.Wall deposits, however, were largely composed of nickel ferrite and nickel-iron olivines.

Stock piling-and by that I mean well-organized stock piling on a substantial scale-is almost as old as the hills themselves. It was back in early Biblical times, as recounted in the Book of Genesis, that Joseph was charged by Pharaoh with the responsibility of stock piling food during the seven years of plenty to guard against the seven subsequent years of famine that were revealed by the Pharaoh's dream. And this same policy of storing up food or materials to provide for future anticipated emergencies can be traced repeatedly down through the ages. So our own efforts are anything but new. Our modern concept of stock piling-the purchase and storage of strategic materials to assure supplies needed in time of some future war- stems from our experience in World War I. In 1920, the War Department was charged by Congress with the responsibility of procuring all War Department supplies and mobilizing industry in the event of another war. During the two decades that followed there were many authoritative studies made of our deficient mineral problem, all of which pointed out the urgent necessity of stock piling certain strategic materials as a reserve against future war. One such study, made in 1925 through the combined efforts of the Mining and Metallurgical Society and the AIME, was done at the ex- press request of the War Department. N EARLY 1300 members and guests crowded the halls of the Engineering Societies Building during the winter meeting of the Institute just closed, and more than 600 attended the banquet. In variety of program, quality of papers, interest in discussion, and brilliance of social features, the meeting maintained the high reputation of the past. Nothing elaborate in the way of excursions was attempted, experience having proved that February weather in New York is much too uncertain to warrant extensive field trips. A sight-seeing journey up the Hudson to the Bear Mountain bridge was, however, made despite the snows of the week before and the week after. The annual business meeting, while attended by a minority of the members in the building, was marked by the display of keen interest in the work and called out several interesting discussions. The excellent reports of the committees that had organized their work and directed it along definite lines, emphasized the need of funds with which to support assistants or Fellows who shall correlate and put to the highest use the facilities of the Institute in research along technical lines. This thought was developed at the banquet by the retiring president, J. V. W. Reynders, and it is expected that the Directors will take early steps to collect a fund for this purpose. The number of the individual sessions was too great and the papers and discussions too numerous to permit mention here of all the features of inter- est. A general review only follows. The papers and detailed discussions will be printed and sent to members as promptly as possible.

Explosive manufacturers have for many years provided a service to the mining industry which has,until recently, been unchallenged by mine operators. Today mine operators are more aware of the properties of explosives required to perform particular tasks within their operations. These properties can be reliably quantified using the test procedures described in this paper for emulsion adn ANFO based explosives. Details of an end-user sampling programme desgined to provide quality checks on explosives supplied to a mine site are also discussed.

In 192b, there wore 47 fatal accidents in the California petroleum industry, 14.6 per cent more than occurred in 1927 when 41 men lost their lives in the drilling, producing, manufacturing, and marketing divisions of the industry. This increase in the number of fatal accidents for 1928 has caused the first upward trend in the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry since 1923. In no other year during the 6-year period have the fatalities in any one year been greater than those for the preceding year. This fact should be given serious consideration and study by the petroleum industry, and an endeavor should be made to cause the number of fatalities again to decrease and conform to the previous gradual declining trend of the fatality curve. "IntroductionThe purpose of this chapter is to describe current practices in operation and maintenance of flotation circuits in Canadian mineral processing plants. The chapter consists of five sections covering description of equipment, typical flow diagrams, operating practice, instrumentation and maintenance. The approach to this subject matter is intended to be practical in nature, hence no deeply technical treatment of flotation theory will be included.Flotation is an extremely common method of beneficiation of ores. Reasons are the relatively low cost of flotation compared to many other processes, the wide range of minerals to which flotation may be applied and the high efficiency of separation which can usually be achieved. The flotation process as we know it today has been developed within this century and it has had a major impact on the mining industry. While flotation is commonly considered to be important because it provides a relatively simple method of separating minerals in complex ores, the availability of flotation has also made a multitude of mineral deposits in Canada into economically viable mining operations because it allowed production of a concentrate of valuable minerals from the ore. These concentrates could then be transported from geographically remote locations to centraHzed plants for further processing, although the existence of the remote and perhaps small ore body alone would not have justified installation of metallurgical processing plants on site and the grade of ore would not have justified direct shipment of ore.Some of the more common minerals concentrated by flotation are sulphides of copper, nickel, cobalt, iron, zinc, molybdenum, lead and arsenic, as well as non-sulphides such as sodium chloride, potassium chloride, phosphates, silicates, chromite, fluorite, limestone and coal. Precious metals are also recovered by flotation, generally in association with another sulphide mineral."

Waste filling has been employed for many years for supporting the walls of stopes and preventing failure and subsidence of the surrounding and overlying rock formations, and its effectiveness for this purpose has long been recognized. It is used for permanent support in ground where timbering (including square-setting) is inadequate for more than temporarily supporting the walls of the excavations. It should be rioted, however, that effective as a good, solid fill may be in resisting heavy side pressure and direct weight, its usefulness for supporting large areas of back and preventing breaking and movement of the overlying rocks is limited. Even the strongest and most uniform rocks will break if the unsupported span becomes too great; and since filling cannot be packed tightly against a horizontal back there is always a possibility of the back breaking and consequent subsidence if the maximum self-supporting span is exceeded. Planes of separation, such as bedding and fault planes, slips, and joints, are common in all rock masses; these may occur above the stoping area where their presence cannot be ascertained by observation. If too much reliance is placed upon filling for the support of a large horizontal area of back (as contrasted to support of vertical or steeply inclined walls) large masses of rock may break along a. plane of weakness, compress the fill, and leave an open space into which caving of the overlying rocks may continue until the space is filled. In this paper the term "waste filling" includes any filling material other than ore - waste mine rock, rock from surface quarries or opencuts, sand and gravel, mill sands, or slags from smelting operations.

THE Magdalen islands have recently been attracting attention as a possible source of manganese. As early as 1880 small masses of manganese oxides were known to occur in the soil and at least one attempt was made to develop them. In 1939, after the outbreak of war, interest in the possibilities of the field was again aroused and during the winter of 1939-40 claims were taken up by two groups of Toronto interests. The islands also contain large quantities of gypsum. During the summer of 1940, the writer mapped the islands geologically, giving particular attention to a study of the manganese occurrences. For a base-map, the chart of the islands was enlarged to a scale of half a mile to an inch. Additional roads were added from traverses carried out in connection with the geological work, and form lines with approximate 100-foot intervals were put on from barometer readings. The geological map is the first that has been prepared of the islands. Previous Work In the summer of 1880, James Richardson of the Geological Survey of Canada studied the rocks of the islands and his r~port concerning them appears as Part G of the Report of Progress, 1879-80. In 1903, J. Obalski, Inspector of Mines for the Department of Lands, Mines and Fisheries of the Province of Quebec, visited the islands, chiefly to investigate the occurrences of manganese and gypsum, and his notes are found in the report on mining operations in the Province for that year. Around 1890, Robert Chalmers of the Geological Survey paid a visit to the islands, and his observations, which chiefly concerned the surface geology, appear in the Annual Report of the Survey, Vol. VII, 1894, Part M, p. 94. The next geological work was carried out by John M. Clarke, Director of the New York State Geological Survey. Clarke paid many visits to Gaspé peninsula between the years 1900 and 1920, collecting fossils and gathering h1s~orical data, and extended his investigations of Gaspé county over to the Magdalens. "The mining industry has always faced the problems of replacing retired mining professionals, retaining their knowledge, continuously developing the skills of local talent and employing under-represented groups. In expansionary scenarios the industry faces the additional challenge of increasing available talent. New talent has traditionally come from current mining programs; however, these programs have been declining in numbers, and those that remain face challenges such as fluctuating enrollments, and reduced budgets. Queen’s University and Northern College have partnered to develop an innovative new program that offers online mining education to engineering technologists seeking to upgrade their skills and obtain a Bachelor’s degree. The high quality, flexible curriculum, offered online, includes a wide range of learning activities that promote interaction (student-to-student, student-to-instructor, and student-to-content), and is enabled by modern learning technologies (an integrated learning platform, as well as a variety of types of purpose-built video, web conferencing, and simulation software). The program issues block transfer credit to college graduates, and consequently reduces the time to completion when compared to other Bachelor’s degrees in Mining. The curriculum has been carefully designed to enhance a balance of technical, managerial, and societal skills for students. The program also includes short summer field school sessions, where students gain practical application skills under the direct supervision of engineering experts. THE NEEDS OF INDUSTRY Canada is the world’s largest exporter of minerals, and the contribution of this sector to Canada’s gross national product is more than three times that of the automotive industry, representing approximately 4% of Canadian GDP (MiHR, 2015)1. According to a recent report by the Canadian Mining Industry Resources Council (MiHR, 2016)2, despite the recent downturn in commodity prices, the industry will continuously need to attract new engineers to replace talent retirements and prepare for the possibility of expansion when the industry recovers. As past experience indicates, the challenges during expansion times are severe and the effects on education counter-productive. For example, during the prolonged expansion cycle of 2006-2012, several new programs were started worldwide, and mining became the profession of choice for many young students. During the subsequent downturn in the industry, many of these programs face dwindling enrollments, placing their sustainability in question. However, there is a continual need by industry to retain employees, as well as attract and train local talent, while providing educational opportunities to its employees. High potential college graduates can find themselves reaching a ceiling in their advancement due to their lack of a University degree. Furthermore, there exists an under representation of women, immigrants, and Aboriginal peoples in the labour force, and engineering fields in general1,2. Traditional mining engineering programs have tried to respond to the needs of industry, as well as meet the needs of students seeking diverse and successful employment careers. These programs tend to cater to the educational needs and aspirations of a general population, and their ability to grow and respond to changing industry needs is constrained by the number of students they can attract, as well as the resources available to them in a steady-state scenario."

"Many advances in glass technology and processing are being made and the possibilities for glass as a material in the future appear unlimited. Float glass, glass-ceramics, high-strength sheet and container glass, glass-reinforced plastics, glass for electronic equipment, aerospace glass, glass fibres, glass vehicles, glasses with selective-reflective coatings and glare-reducing glasses, to name a few, provide areas of significance at present and for the future. There appear to be great opportunities, in certain localities of Canada, to develop new sources of raw materials for an expanding Canadian glass industry.New developments in the structural clay products industry have centered around facing brick as a structural load-bearing material, prefabricated brick panels, large-sized units, isostatic pressing of sewer pipe and auto-matic settmg of brick. Fast-firing techniques, using prefired or calcined raw materials, and the development of high-strength products will result in the use of a wider range of raw materials in the whiteware and structural clay products industries.Porcelain enamel, a material used for many years in domestic appliances and for sanitary ware, now is used extensively in architecture, agriculture, water tanks, highway signs and reflectors, and in products where resistance to corrosion-plus-temperature is important. Exotic composites of ceramics and metals, and specialized ceramic coatings applied on metals by various techniques such as flame spray, plasma jet, or vapour and chemical deposition have proved useful in materials for aircraft power plants, rockets, missiles and nuclear applications."

A study of the hydrometallurgy and electrowinning of cobalt from various domestic ores has been in progress at the Boulder City, Nevada, Experiment Station since February 1940. Previous reports covering certain phases of this investigation have been published. This report covers the research and pilot-plant work on the production of cobalt metal from cobalt-copper ores from the initial experimental work on crude ore through continuous operation. The ore types were from the Blackbird District, Lemhi County, Idaho. The initial tests were made with concentrated ore which was received by air mail and these experiments were expanded both in size and scope. After the laboratory was continued, improved, and extended tests were reported. Sufficiently advanced, a continuously operated plant producing 250 pounds of electrolytic cobalt per day was operated from June 15 through July 15, 1944.

The Brunswick Mine Diesel Particulate Filter Study was one of several research projects initiated by the Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program (DEEP). The study was carried out at Noranda?s Brunswick Mine in Bathurst, New Brunswick by Noranda Technology Centre and Brunswick Mine personnel with the collaboration of Natural Resources Canada - Canada Centre for Minerals and Energy Technology (CANMET), National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Andreas Mayer of VERT, and diesel particulate filter (DPF) system suppliers. The study began in early 2000. Field evaluations continued for 20 months. The final report?authored by Sean McGinn?was submitted to DEEP in the Autumn of 2003.

We are in the midst of a transportation revolution. From the Wright Brothers to the SST. From the Toonerville Trolly to the 120-mile-an-hour Northeast Corridor train. From Christopher Columbus to Neil Armstrong. There is another side to this revolution and it is going on every day at our mines and factories. We call it bulk distribution. Perhaps ordinary sounding, but every bit as exciting as those other transportation innovations. Basically, we have gone from bag to bulk, and in the process reached that Last Frontier in manufacturing cost savings. By revitalization of our distribution system, we have made it possible for our mines and factories to realize fully the vast economies of spage-age manufacturing techniques and accomplishments. The pacesetters in this distribution revolution have been you gentlemen, the producers and shippers of dry mineral products. In this area bulk distribution grew up. And here most of the current innovations are being introduced. Management of your industry was early to realize the economic advantages of bulk distribution. Distribution costs of your products comprises a sizeable, portion of the selling price and management is sensitive of any developments which may even slightly reduce the cost of transportation, marketing or the exploration of new frontiers.

Physiol. 11): L365–L374, 1994.—Although integrity of the alveolar basement membrane may influence progression of lung injury induced by inhaled particulates, little is known about direct effects of coal dusts on the alveolar epithelium or its extracellu¬lar matrix (ECM). Effects of dust on synthesis of cell and ECM proteins by type II cells (T2P) was thus investigated. Three coal dusts (anthracite no. 867; bituminous no. 1451 and no. 1361) and mine dust MIT-3, of respirable size, were studied as a function of dose and time over 3 days of primary T2P culture. On day 1, 750 µg/ml of 867 were required to increase relative synthesis of ECM proteins (ECM/cell). MIT-3, 1451, and 1361 were without effect. By day 3, 867 or MIT-3 increased ECM/ cell 60-100% at 300 µg/ml; 1451 produced modest, dose-dependent stimulation, whereas 1361 remained without effect. None of the dusts caused significant cytotoxicity. The results show dose- and time-dependent effects of well-characterized coal and mine dusts to modify partitioning of newly synthesized proteins into the ECM and suggest that coal dust exposure may modulate structure or function of the subepithelial basement membrane.basement membrane; cell culture; inorganic dust; lung injury; extracellular matrix deposition; pulmonary epitheliumCHRONIC EXPOSURE to coal dust may be associated with development of pulmonary fibrosis and consequent loss of normal lung function (see Ref. 26 for review). Al¬though the pathways of inorganic dust-induced lung injury are recognized to involve an inflammatory re¬sponse, the underlying pathogenic mechanisms are not understood in detail. Acute and chronic responses to dust exposure involve a variety of interacting cells of the immune system, including macrophages, T cells, and B cells, along with pulmonary fibroblasts. These responses reflect direct effects of the dust particles, as well as indirect effects mediated by soluble factors, including cytokines and eicosanoids (see Ref. 41 for review).Studies of pulmonary macrophages and fibroblasts following silica exposure suggest that dust-induced damage at the airway surface may involve cellular injury through oxidant-mediated pathways. Coal dusts and related inorganic particulates can activate the alveolar macrophage (42) to produce fibronectin (15) and cytokines, such as interleukin-1 or tumor necrosis factor (4) and/or other soluble products which act locally (29) to cause acute cellular injury and to initiate the progression of fibrotic lung damage (16). Type I epithelial cells are typically more susceptible than type II cells to oxidant injury. Type I cell damage and subsequent death leads to denudation of the subepithelial basement membrane (2, 21) and can be associated with leakage of plasma constituents from the pulmonary vasculature into the alveolar compartment (13)."

In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) is being increasingly considered as an alternative to traditional truck-shovel mining methods. The move towards IPCC is driven by a number of factors including the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the availability of skilled labour and the need to increase extraction rates to levels that present significant challenges to traditional methods.When considering the relative performance of IPCC and truck-shovel methods, the outcome can be inadvertently impacted by either the use of different simulation approaches, or techniques that do not adequately model the processes in sufficient detail.A simulation approach is proposed that models both IPCC and truck-shovel using the same software platform and is capable of functioning at a wide range of resolutions from life-of-mine scale through to second-by-second asset tracking level. The simulation framework also holds models of processing equipment and hence the mining simulations can be extended to gauge the impact on downstream plant.The approach, known as mine-process operational simulation (MPOS), can be tailored to the level of information available and hence the type of study required, ie order of magnitude, prefeasibility, feasibility, or detailed design.Using information from block models and a range of detailed equipment and process models, MPOS can span major system discontinuities, typified by the mine-plant interface, to allow the estimation of final mine and plant product specifications.

"Bauxite has been the almost universal ore of aluminum for about 100 years, with most of the world's reserves oc¬curring in the developing countries. As a result of fiscal and political activities prompted in part by the energy crisis, the formation of the IBA combined with increasing freight and labour costs, these reserves are no longer as competitive or as secure as they once were. This has given fresh impetus to the development of processes for alumina production that utilize raw material other than bauxite. Canada has no bauxite and it is prudent to look for alter¬native raw materials within our own boundaries suitable for one of these processes.Of the three igneous rocks that have been used as a source of alumina, only anorthosite is considered as a potential source in Canada. The Al content would be extracted by a sinter process, which currently requires a raw material with a. minimum of 28% Al2O2. Thus, about 4 tons of anorthosite and 10 to 12 tons of limestone are needed to produce one ton of alumina. There are two petrologically distinct types of anorthosite, one containing the plagioclase andesine-labradorite and around 26% Al2O3, and the other containing upwards of 30% Al2O3, in by¬townite-anorthite; for our purposes they may be con¬sidered as low- and high-alumina anorthosite respectively. The high-alumina anorthosites are somewhat rare; the low-alumina anorthosites are much more common, partic¬ularly in Eastern Canada. Geologically speaking, there is no shortage of anorthosite in Canada. The reserves are im¬mense, although their low Al2O3 content coupled with con¬siderations of location, access and proximity to limestone could be constraints to their development. Fly ash from coal-fired thermal power stations and nepheline syenite can also be used in a sinter process, but neither is likely to be utilized in Canada in the immediate future.The H+ process utilizes an acid attack to leach Al from a raw material with at least 20% Al2O3. One of the best raw materials is kaolinite-bearing clay; not only is it high in Al, but most of it can be extracted. With the possible exception of the Whitemud clay in Saskatchewan, Canada is apparently deficient in clays with sufficient reserves to support an alumina plant utilizing the H+ process. Low-alumina clays with illite and montmorillonite may also prove to be a suitable raw material if advantageously sited with respect to industrial centers. The average shale con¬tains only 15% Al2O33, much of which may be contained in minerals, such as feldspar, not amenable to acid leaching. If shale is used as a source of alumina, it will be because it contains some other valuable commodity, such as oil or uranium, the extraction of which leaves the spent shale upgraded in extractable Al2O3 and lowers the over-all costs to a point where it is economic, Thus, rejects from coal washing plants are most commonly considered as a source of alumina; they are already mined, are available in large and ever increasing amounts, and may contain significant amounts of combustible material which upgrades the Al2O3, content of the resulting ash. Coal rejects from existing and developing coalfields in Alberta and British Columbia are a possible source of raw material, but present data indicate they may contain insufficient Al2O3."

Ensaios de curva R (J vs. ?a – crescimento dúctil de defeitos) e de propagação de trincas por fadiga (da/dN vs. ?K) são balizados por normas como a ASTM E1820, ISO 12135 e E647, as quais exigem dimensões mínimas para as amostras C(T) ou SE(B) a fim de garantir condições SSY e portanto a validade de K e J. Entretanto, tais exigências usualmente conduzem a dimensões expressivas que dificultam a retirada de amostras de chapas finas ou mesmo de muitas estruturas reais. Como alternativa, estudos de Koppenhoefer e Dodds (1998) e mais recentemente de Shin e Lin (2012) indicaram a possibilidade de uso de amostras em miniatura (inclusive Charpy contendo pré-trinca) para determinação de curvas R e da/dN vs. ?K. As grandes questões são a viabilidade de ensaio de amostras pequenas com repetibilidade e a adequada avaliação dos limites de validade das forças motrizes nestas geometrias, a fim de garantir condições de similitude. Como um passo nesta direção, este trabalho investiga o potencial de amostras Charpy pré-trincadas (10x10x70mm) na determinação de curvas R e da/dN vs. ?K. Inicialmente, ensaios de ambos os tipos foram realizados em amostras de um aço estrutural ferrítico empregando uma máquina universal MTS 810. Apesar das dimensões reduzidas dos espécimes, os ensaios se mostraram viáveis e apresentaram boa repetibilidade e estabilidade dos resultados experimentais. Ainda, boas práticas de ensaio puderam ser estabelecidas para suportar os trabalhos futuros com tais geometrias.

Introduction The relationship between precious metal miners and gold refiners has been uneasy over the years. Reasons for this uneasiness and lack of trust include technical factors, economics of scale, and cultural differences. Technical factors take two forms. First, concentrates, precipitates, and sponge produced at the mine site are notoriously difficult to sample. A nonrepresentative sample can be the cause of misunderstanding and distrust. Dote, however, is relatively homogeneous and can be correctly sampled and analyzed with greater reliability. Second, the technology and chemistry of fine gold and silver production is complex and quite different from dote production. Most mining companies are content not to be involved with additional processing steps. From the standpoint of process economies, it is easy to see why miners and refiners are separate groups. Mine location is dictated by the natural occurrence of ore bodies. Heavy capital investment requirements for infrastructure in remote locations usually limits companies to produce the first marketable product from a mine. Beyond that point, the economies of scale and large capital investments for refineries generally dictate that the outputs of several mines be combined to feed a single refinery. The refin¬ing process is so complex that refineries are generally built in larger cities with a skilled labor pool. Therefore, only the largest mines can afford to refine their own output. Lastly, there are cultural differences between the miner and the refiner. The miner, particularly the small gold miner, is by definition a risk taker in a risky business. Refineries, on the other hand, have historically been operated under legal or implied monopolies approved by the government. The government is interested in owning gold, either for currency reasons or because many national mints are major users of gold coins. It is not surprising, then, to find that miners may regard refiners as part of an unresponsive government bureaucracy or, worse, as "city slickers." It is easy for the two groups to distrust each other with these different backgrounds. The interface between miner and refiner does exist and affects nearly all precious metal mining companies and most refineries. This paper discusses the technical and economic aspects of the interface. It points out how both parties can improve the relationship. Technical interface Precious metals selectively dissolve to produce a pregnant solution. They are then recovered from solution by zinc precipitation (Merrill-Crowe process) or by absorption onto activated carbon. This is followed by stripping and electrowinning. At this point, the mining company must decide whether to ship precipitates (or sponge) to refiners or to produce a dote. Some factors the company must consider are the ability to sample precipitates, concentrates or sponge, security of storage, and production rates. An important factor is the incremental cost (capital and operating) of converting precipitates or sponge into dote at the mine. Generally, mines prefer to melt precipitates or sponge to dote to avoid prob¬lems associated with sampling them. There are three types of fur¬naces used by mining operators to melt precipitates to dote. The first and most widely used is a sil¬icon carbide crucible heated ex¬ternally with a gaseous liquid fuel. The crucible is easy to use and slag can be skimmed before pouring dote. This simple system is capable of handling 1 t/a (32,000 oz per year) gold. It could cost as little as $20,000. More complex systems could cost up to $200,000. The second type of furnace is the gas- or propane-fired rever¬beratory furnace. This is usually used only by large-scale opera¬tors in the silver business. Precip¬itates in reverberatory furnaces come in direct contact with the flame. The large volumes of flue gas can carry significant amounts of dust and fume that must be re¬moved from the gas before dis¬charging it to the atmosphere. In the days when the Rand re¬finery in South Africa used reverberatory furnaces, the silver leaving the furnace in the form of vapor and fume was estimated at 2.2% of the total silver charged to the furnace. The gold in the gases was about 0.03% of the gold charged. Most of this silver and gold was recovered in the exhaust gas scrubber system. These scrub¬ber systems can be more costly than the furnace itself.
