The Washington National Cathedral is one of the largest masonry structures in the USA, and like many of its European Gothic counterparts, it required nearly a century to construct. The design was altered during this period, resulting in greater loadings than were originally anticipated on the soil beneath the foundation. When signs of continuing differential settlement were observed in the early 1990's, the Cathedral approached the US Bureau of Mines (now the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)) for assistance in monitoring the movements of the massive towers and walls. An array of dual-axis tiltmeters was installed about 40m above ground level to measure wall and tower inclination, with the data sent over a dedicated phone line to the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory for processing. Mechanical gages and string-potentiometers are also being used to measure motion across cracks and joints, and differential pier settlement is being monitored with optical-level surveying. Data have now been collected for almost 7 years, and they show a long-term settlement trend masked by dramatic diurnal and seasonal thermal movements. The paper discusses the major findings of the study, implications for the future of the Cathedral, and conclusions regarding the use of geotechnical monitoring at major national monuments.

The work described forms part of a Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) funded project, currently an ongoing programme of research aimed at providing ?improved criteria, guidelines and the use of numerical models to design mine layouts at depth, so as to reduce seismicity and enhance worker safety?. The entire project deals with a number of distinct, albeit interrelated, research areas such as: subsidence and caving in hardrock, general numerical criteria for layout design, regional benefits of backfill, concrete pillars, strike stabilizing pillars and bracket pillars. This paper will focus on the last two items only. New considerations for the design of both stabilizing pillars and bracket pillar layouts are briefly discussed.

"Surface coal mining in West Virginia has supplied energy to the eastern coast of the United States for over a century. Over the years, the coal mining industry has been forced to adapt as societal demands regarding health, safety, and environmental impacts have changed. More recent pressure has called for another iteration of change: long-term post-mining sustainability. The research discussed in this paper investigates one potential solution - or component of a solution - to improve the sustainability of surface coal mining in West Virginia: post-mining wind power. The paper begins with an introduction to the Appalachian region of the U.S. and the role that mining has played in its history, followed by a discussion of the need for sustainable mining and how post-mining wind power may help fulfill it. Data processing methodology of field data from monitoring locations is then explained. The results are then used to estimate the electrical output of a wind turbine. This data is then utilized in a case study discussion of one of the monitored sites. The paper concludes with an analysis of the broader implications of the research and a discussion of future work."

X-ray diffraction and metallographic examination of binary Mn-rich alloys with Ti revealed the presence of intermediate phases in this system. A binary R phase has been identified and also a phase having an a-Mn type structure. The X-ray pattern of the phase TiMn3 is presented and a tentative phase diagram for the Mn-rich portion of this binary system has been constndcted. MANGANESE-rich alloys with titanium have been subjected to thermal analysis at temperatures down to 1100°C by Hellawell and Hume-Rothery.1 Their results indicate the existence of an intermediate phase TiMn3 in this binary system. This phase appears to coexist with the Laves phase TiMn2, and with terminal solid solutions based on the allotropes of manganese, at least down to 1100°C. The above investigators did not attempt to determine the crystal structure of this phase, however. Since, by analogy to the binary systems Mn-V and Mn-Cr3 one might expect to find a phase in this region of the diagram, it seemed desirable to obtain X-ray diffraction patterns of alloys in the concentration range in question, in order to ascertain whether the sigma phase or related structures occur. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloys were prepared by arc-melting electrolytic manganese and iodide titanium in a water-cooled copper crucible under a helium atmosphere. Excess manganese was added to each melt in order to allow for losses incurred during melting. The alloys were then wrapped in molybdenum foil and sealed in evacuated quartz tubes for annealing at various temperatures, as shown in Table I, followed by quenching in cold water. Although the inside of the tubes showed evidence for some loss of manganese from the specimen during annealing, there was no evidence of any reaction between the specimen and either the molybdenum foil or the quartz tube at these temperatures. It was later found that the manganese loss was considerably reduced by annealing these alloys in sealed quartz tubes containing one atmosphere of purified argon. As an added precaution the surface of each specimen was ground off before crushing the alloys to -270 mesh powder, using a hardened steel mortar and pestle. X-ray powder patterns were obtained using either FeKa or CrKa radiation in an asymmetrical focusing camera, which gave excellent dispersion of the closely spaced lines. Pictures were also obtained using a Debye camera of 5-cm radius which provided data in the angular region not covered by the focusing camera. The alloy specimens were polished and examined metallographically, using an etchant consisting of 60 pct glycerine, 20 pct nitric acid, and 20 pct hydrofluoric acid. The 10-g buttons were in each case broken in half and found to be well-melted and free of any gross segregation. One half of certain alloy buttons was submitted to chemical analysis in the "as-cast" condition. No appreciable change in composition seemed to occur during annealing . This study reviews the sulfur and suliuric acid industries in Eastern United States with emphasis on patterns of consumption and marketing. Output of sulfur in the East is relatively small, and most of the area's sulfur requirements are met by gulf coast Frasch sulfur. Over the long ten recovered elemental sulfur from sour natural gas and petroleum may become the East's major source of sulfur. In 1958 sulfuric acid manufacture consumed over 80 percent of the area's sulfur requirements. The leading uses for sulfuric acid were the manufacture of superphosphates and chemicals. Over the years, unit requirements for sulfur and acid in many major markets have been reduced through improved technology, but new markets always have been developed to keep the industry vital and growing.

The Brisbane City Council has implemented a program of continual improvement at its Mount Coottha Quarry in the heart of Brisbane, Australia. The program has been underway for the past 6 years, and has resulted in very significant improvements in terms of both the cost effectiveness of its operation, and in terms of its environmental impact on nearby residents. The work has included a focus, amongst other things, on blasting efficiency and has challenged conventional thinking in terms of the size of blasts fired, the frequency of firing, the diameter of blastholes, and the use of bulk emulsion or slurry explosives.

En quoi consistent les études de suivi des effets sur l?environnement (ESEE)? Les ESEE constituent une méthode de suivi scientifique que l?on peut employer pour déterminer la santé des écosystèmes aquatiques (qui peuvent être touchés par l?activité humaine) et l?efficacité des mesures de protection de l?environnement. Les ESEE sont des évaluations scientifiques itératives du poisson, de l?habitat du poisson et des ressources halieutiques. Le programme comporte des phases séquentielles de deux à six ans de suivi, d?interprétation et de compte rendu au cours desquelles la fréquence et le type de suivi dépendent des résultats des études précédentes. Le programme des ESEE pour les mines de métaux est fondé sur un accord conclu à l?unanimité entre les intervenants. Les exigences du programme et les guides techniques connexes ont été élaborés à la suite d?une consultation multilatérale à laquelle ont participé les représentants du secteur privé, du gouvernement et des collectivités. Toutes les mines assujetties au Règlement sur les effluents des mines de métaux (REMM), aux termes de la Loi sur les pê ches, doivent procéder à une ESEE dans le cadre de l?autorisation qu?ils ont reç ue de rejeter des effluents. I.H. 635 (LBJ Freeway) was constructed as a loop freeway around the city of Dallas in the late 1960s and early 1970s with a design capacity of 160,000 vehicles per day (vpd). Today’s facility is carrying over 270,000 vpd. To help mitigate community concerns with regard to right-of-way issues, noise, safety, and traffic disruption, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is planning a number of significant improvements. The West Section improvements include the construction of managed HOV/Toll lanes. Within this 8-mile section, TxDOT is planning two mined tunnels(1.5 and 1.9 miles long) beneath the LBJ Freeway. The mined tunnels will connect to cut-and-cover box sections in both the east and west directions. This paper presents an overview of the project development from the design schematic, through the geotechnical investigations, into the current design stage. The project is being planned for implementation by use of a Comprehensive Development Agreement.

The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM) is preparing an Abandoned Mined Lands Reclamation Control Technology Hand- book. (l) GAI Consultants, Inc. , recently prepared Chapter 2 on Mine Subsidence Control which contains a summary of subsidence abatement measures plus two new decision matrices for evaluating the subsidence abatement options that might be considered for a particular problem. These decision matrices are presented for information. Review of the subsidence abatement methods resulted in identification of items where research may impact the current state of technology in mine subsidence control. These research needs are presented to stimulate discussion of their importance in subsidence abatement and to encourage funding agencies, researchers, and practitioners to work on them.

Driven piles are a common tool in any engineer’s toolbox for supporting large structures over very soft ground, especially in high seismic risk zones. Challenges include achieving sufficient vertical and lateral load capacities within the constraints of pile spacing and geologic conditions. This was the case for a project in Orange County, California with a state-of-the-art, $180 million plant for biosolids processing, biogas management and energy recovery located in marshland next to an existing waste water treatment plant. The new construction for the Irvine Ranch Water District included a 70-foot (21 m) tall building and three closely spaced, 90-foot (27 m) high, 65-foot (20 m) diameter, egg-shaped steel digester tanks. The lower 35-feet (11 m) of the tanks were constructed below ground level. The site was underlain by up to 45 feet (14 m) of highly compressible peat and organic clays with standard penetration test (SPT) blows as low as 2 blows/ft (30 cm). Some of the peat layers had measured in-situ dry densities of less than 30 pcf (480 kg/m3) with moisture contents of over 250 percent. The soft clays and peat were underlain by a dense layer of sand and gravel at depth. Groundwater was very shallow. While nearby sites were designated by others as seismic site class “D”, this site was clearly class “F” (SF) which required site specific seismic hazard and time history analyses. Six recorded time histories were selected from the 1994 Northridge, 1989 Loma Prieta (California) and 1999 Chi Chi (Taiwan) earthquakes for the ground motion analysis considering the magnitude of the earthquake, distance to the source, characteristics of the earthquake source (i.e. type of fault displacement), peak ground acceleration, local site geology, station type (i.e. free-field or small structure stations), and spectral content that was similar to the period range of interest. Following ASCE’s Guideline Document 7-05, a site-specific horizontal acceleration response spectra (ARS) was developed for the maximum credible earthquake (MCE) associated with the site.

Occupational hearing loss is a permanent illness with no recovery currently possible. For underground coal mine workers, Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) continues to be a serious health issue. One of the principal and fundamental machines used in underground mining operations is also one of the loudest. Noise generated on the continuous mining machine is the result of 3 operational components: the cutting system, the dust collection system, and the onboard conveying system. During underground acoustic evaluations, the conveyor system noise was observed to be dominant. In order to more closely examine sound generated by the continuous mining machine, sound power levels were measured in a reverberation chamber at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). Different chain types and configurations were installed on the conveyor system, and the resulting sound power level ranged from 118 dB(A) to 108 dB(A). Noise generated by the dust collection system was also examined and found to be 107 dB(A).

In 2013, Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) produced 251 Mt from 15 mines in Western Australia. Throughout the mines, Ore Reserve models are used for long-term and medium-term mine planning. Grade control data aids the accuracy of short-term planning. Reconciliation of models with grade control data is important for maintaining confidence in predictions from the models, understanding the limitations of the models, and identifying issues that may require further work.There are a large number of sites and models, with more than 200 professionals involved in different parts of the reconciliation process. Regular meetings of all involved and enabling effective communication are important in the reconciliation process.Reconciliation data is gathered and processed through a web-based system; Grade Block Reconciliation System. This system cuts each grade block against the required model, stores the results, and allows users to view and analyse the data. Development of this system has occurred over a number of years and all Rio Tinto Iron Ore mine geologists and resource geologists now use it as standard to report reconciliation results. The results can be viewed in many ways including by different time periods or benches. Graphing the results assists identification of trends. Centralising and standardising reconciliation has allowed easier comparison between sites. Flexibility in the system allows users to customise reports to manage issues unique to their particular site.In parallel with system development, substantial effort has been put into ensuring mining professionals get together to discuss and understand reconciliation issues. To facilitate this there are now regular sessions, including site visits. Issues are assessed on a case-by-case basis and decisions on how best to address the issues are made by the relevant stakeholders. The current phase of office development at Canary Wharf in the London Docklands includes twelve multi-storey buildings varying from eighteen to forty stories in height. The area of Canary Wharf South comprises five multi-storey buildings with low level in fill podium and garden areas. Three of these multi-storey buildings have "pile-cap" designs where the entire building load is applied to the piles. The remaining two buildings have "piled-raft" designs where allowance is made in the design for part of the building load to be transferred to the raft formation. Using a piled-raft design approach has enabled savings to be made on the number of piles used below the raft. This paper describes the calibration analysis undertaken to validate the design method. The ground conditions at the Canary Wharf site are typically fill and recent gravel deposits over the overconsolidated clay and sand of the Lambeth Group. Below these strata is the Thanet Sand. The Lambeth Group provided the founding layer for the raft and contributed to the pile shaft resistance. The Thanet Sand stratum provided the bearing layer for the 1.5m diameter base grouted bored piles. The piled-raft design required an assessment of the building load transfer through the raft to the formation layer. This load transfer led to significant increases in effective stress in the soil below the raft and thence a corresponding increased the capacity of the piles. This interaction of the raft with the prepared formation contributed to between 27% and 45% increase in total vertical load carrying capacity of the piled-raft substructure compared with the pile-cap design method. The development of the piled-raft design was carried out in three main phases: ? Development of the approach and validation analyses. ? Design work on various schemes resulting in detailed design packages. ? Validation analyses using full 3D finite element analysis (presented herein). The validation of the piled-raft design approach was initially carried out against published case histories for piled-raft interaction. To improve on the validation work a full 3D finite element analysis of a simplified pile raft and superstructure (which contributes stiffness to the raft) was undertaken; the analysis included only a quarter of the structure due to assumed symmetry of the structure and vertical loading. This 3D validation analysis is presented herein. The analysis was carried out using the Oasys LS-DYNA finite element program. Prior to carrying out the analysis of the piled-raft an initial finite element analysis was carried out to back analyse a fully instrumented field pile test providing accurate modelling of a single pile performance. This back analysis allowed confidence in the soil parameters used in the 3D model; comparisons of shaft and base resistances between the pile test and the FE model calculations for the single pile are presented. The parameters provided in this work were then carried into the full 3D model of the piled-raft. The 3D model of the piled-raft structure included 18 piles (12 full piles and 6 half piles on an axis of symmetry of the model).

A study was conducted to elucidate the relationship between the hovering velocity and the particle settling velocity. The experiments were carried out in a water medium on five materials ranging in density from 1.070 to 4.000 kg/m3. Analysis of the results with allowance for the distribution of stream velocities over the cross section of the pipe revealed that the final settling velocity of the particles was equal to their local hovering velocity (on the stream axis), and not to the average velocity of vertical flow as is generally believed. It therefore follows that the kinetic structure of the stream must be taken into account when constructing theoretical models of the process for purposes of computation. In addition, the optimal stream velocity is not always equal to the hovering velocity and in fact is governed by other factors as well. Illustration is provided by the results of a study conducted in a vertical cascade classifier comprising eleven identical stages. The feed material was introduced at each stage successively beginning with the topmost (i* = 1 ) and ending with the lowermost (i* = 11). First, the stream velocity that yields optimum separation conditions at each stage of the cascade (i.e. k=50%, k being the yield of a given size class in the fines for a single stage) was sought. Subsequently the conditions of optimal separation for the instrument as a whole were determined (i.e. F(x) = 50%, F(x) being the yield of a given size class for the entire instrument). The results of the study are presented in the table.

Due to not to being our own sources, some energy sources such as oil and natural gas which are used frequently, are not reliable energy sources for our country. Coal is an important energy source that Turkey also has a certain reserve as many countries have. To be able to use for many years the reserves of this source that comes from fossils, there is a great need to make more investigation and development activities on it. On behalf of using more productively the current sources, briquetting facility is represented that commenced production in The Aegean Lignite Establishment in 2005 which is in Manisa, Soma. This facility is a part of General Directorate of Turkish Coal. This facility is run by Soma Coal Establishment that works in return for royalty in a licensed field that belongs to TKI. As the demand of market for 0.5 mm dust coal diminishes, we had to accumulate and stock unmerchantable dust coal. Besides, we have intermixed 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal obtained as a result of washing in coal washer with thermic coal with low price as we could not find a client in the market. In this study, the production stages of briquette coal with high quality produced as a result of pressing by mixing 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal with molasse and lime, quality control, and data?s obtained about calories and solidity of products were presented. By briquetting of 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal washed in coal washer, it became possible to sell these coals on a high unit price and by providing the demand of coal of the market, we contributed to productivity of our firm. Iodine is a bluish-black, crystalline solid with sub-metallic luster, and has a specific gravity of 4.93. It volatilizes (sublimates) at ordinary temperatures into a blue-violet gas that has an irritating odor. Iodine is the least active of the halogens, all of which readily displace it. Only slightly soluble in water, iodine also dissolves in carbon disulfide, carbon tetrachloride and chloroform, giving a deep violet solution. The primary sources for iodine production are sub-surface brines associated with petroleum and natural gas deposits, and as a byproduct from nitrate deposits in Chilean desert caliche. The largest source of iodine is seawater which contains 0.05 ppm, or about 31 Mt (34 million st). Seaweed of the family Laminaria can extract and accumulate up to 0.45 percent iodine on a dry basis. Seaweed was an important source of iodine prior to 1959. However, it remains a significant source of iodine in the diets of many populations throughout the world.

This report summarizes all work performed under U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. J0395028, "Noise Control of Rubber-Tired Front-End Loaders Used in Surface Mining. " Two loaders, a Caterpillar 988 and an International H-400B, were chosen for this program, and the noise sources and acoustic paths that contribute to the operator's noise exposure were identified. Retrofit noise control treatments were designed and installed on these loaders, and noise reductions of more than 10 dBA at the operator position were achieved on both machines. The retrofit packages are low cost and have been field tested in two mines for more than two years. The results of the program were communicated to the mining industry through a series of noise control workshops and a field manual. The workshops were given in nine states across the U.S. and more than 440 manuals were distributed An audio/visual slide presentation was also developed which the program.

"The measured response of residential structures is a critical indicator of troublesomeor potentially damaging ground vibrations. A study was conducted to evaluate theresponse of structures situated in the periphery of four open-pit coal mines in India. Although, most of the structures were at far-off distances from the present blasting sites, an attempt was made to document the response of structures to blast vibration for future applications to optimize the blast designs for the safety of the structures. The study involved a total 215 blasts, employing one-, two- and three-hole calibration study, and production blasts. The bench height varied from 7.5 m to 42 m, and boreholes loaded with emulsion and slurry explosives were 250, 260, 270 and 310 mm in diameter. The explosive detonated in a blast were between 300-198400 kg whereas in a delay it was 33-24800 kg. Up to 12 tri-axial vibration sensors were located in overburden along a linear array from 25 m to 6.5 km distance from the blasts. Altogether, 1512 blast vibration signatures were recorded. Production and specially fi red single-charge blasts allowed the determination of natural ground frequency. The fundamental frequency of the structures ranged between 3.13 to 10.6 Hz, the same as those of the ground vibrations. The amplifi cation of vibration in the structures was in the range of 1.6 to 5.6. The study details the interaction between ground vibrations and selected structures, and the means to reduce amplifi cation of vibrations in the structures and persistence of vibrations through improved blast design."

The necessary capability of the gravity transportation pipeline system for cemented coal gangue backfilling at the Suncun Coal Mine, China, is about 74.4 m3?h-1 according to mining production and working times in the mine. It is estimated that the working velocity and maximum pipe length-backfill depth ratio of the backfill system are 3.82m?s-1 and 5.4, respectively and that the probable backfill capability of the system is 110.18m3?h-1. Results of hydraulic calculations for the backfill transportation system show that the designed backfill system is reliable in flowability and sufficient for backfill capability needs.

The personal dust monitor (PDM) is a new coal mine respirable dust sampling instrument that has the ability to provide accurate end-of-shift and real-time respirable dust exposure data. A hypothetical cost comparison analysis of the PDM with the current MSHA-required coal mine dust personal sampling unit (CMDPSU) was conducted. Some simplifying assumptions were made to create hypothetical cases for analysis. This analysis was limited to respirable dust sampling of one designated operator (DO) and one designated area (DA) for one mechanized mining unit (MMU) which operated one shift per day. Only sampling intervals of the minimum sampling as required by federal regulations and continuous sampling were analyzed. This cost analysis from the company perspective is only one part of an overall cost/benefit analysis that should be conducted at a later date. In this analysis, company-associated costs were examined for both sampling systems. Results show that the PDM, while it has high initial costs of approximately $12,600, may be a cost-effective sampling system for measuring coal mine respirable dust. The estimated present worth cost of conducting the minimum required dust sampling over a five-year life ranges from $5,850 to $19,000 for the CMDPSU, with the higher present worth cost including costs of potential violations incurred. For the PDM, the comparable present worth cost is $14,900 to $19,300, with the lower present worth cost representing a lower capital cost of $8,150 per unit if more than 850 units are produced per year, while the higher present worth cost reflects the result with the higher $12,600 capital cost.
