It is now generally conceded that coal is the product of deposition and transformation of debris of forests and swamps.29 Ample data are available to illustrate the metamorphosis of biochemical substances through biological action; other data show the progressive regional metamorphism existing in coal beds;25 and numerous examples of change effected by intrusion of igneous dikes into coal deposits have been established.23 However, often the relative importance of the biological and the geological factor in determining the character of the various natural coals is a debatable question. Since both biological and geological factors are ever present in nature, the problem, at first glance, would appear to resemble certain probability problems: specifically the simultaneous toss of two coins, with the biological factor as heads and the geological as tails. The probability is 2:I for the combined effect of both factors, as compared to the exclusive effect of either one, if the a priori probability is the same for each factor. This condition can be analyzed by a thermodynamic treatment of data, which may be obtained from a consideration of pertinent biological, chemical, geophysical and geological facts. Synopsis of Biological and Chemical Facts The biosphere is not sterile; i.e., microorganisms are always present. Microor- ganisms have been established in the ocean deep, under the ice of the polar regions, in the sand of the deserts, and in swamps far below the surface. The various biological media may be acid, neutral, or alkaline, and they may or may not be readily accessible to air. Microorganisms are encountered almost everywhere, except where the temperature is not within the range tolerable by microbial life. Of course, with changing conditions, the type of microorganisms will change. All chemical products of life—proteins, fats, carbohydrates, lignins, waxes, resins— may serve as a habitat of microorganisms. In the decomposition of a medium, some microorganisms macerate organic matter mechanically and remove certain constituents for their own nutrition; others decompose a large part of the organic matter but may leave certain constituents undecomposed. Some attack only certain specific ingredients of the organic matter. All of them build up cell substance. The nitrogen content of the medium largely determines the degree of decomposition. Below 1.7 per cent nitrogen, growth of microorganisms and hence decomposition of organic material is retarded; consequently organic material will accumulate.17,32 Such accumulations of organic material may give coal eventually. Coals differ in type and rank. The nature of the original vegetation and the conditions attending the transformation of the accumulated debris determine the type of coal such as bright, splint, cannel, and algal or boghead coals. PRODUCTION of crude it in the United States during 1939 totaled about 1.255,776,000 barrels, an average of 3,440,482 barrels per day, 3.41 per cent above the 1938 output of 1,214,355,000 barrels but 1.83 per cent below the record pro¬duction of 1,279,160,000 barrels, in 1937. However only the two-week shutdown of oil fields in the Southwestern States in August and September prevented the domestic crude production from establishing an all-time record in 1939. Demand for all petroleum products for the first ten months of 1939 showed an increase of 7.04 per cent over the similar period of 1938. Domestic demand for all petroleum products was particularly benefited by the increasing industrial activity, advancing 8.37 per cent above the like period of the preceding year equivalent to a volume increment of 256,810 barrels per day; with motor-fuel demand gaining 5.83 per cent and demand for all fuel oils gaining 12.15 per cent over the corresponding period of 1938. The export demand for the first ten months of 1939 was slightly below the export movements during the same period of 1938, declining 0.56 per cent. The European war was a major factor in 1939 for the petroleum industry in the United States, even if, at the end of the year, the war had not yet resulted in the expected large shipments to England and France.

THE solid nonmetallic inclusions present to some extent in all commercial steels have been variously designated. In early references they were usually called slag inclusions, and this terminology is still retained to some extent. On the premise that all nonmetallic matter produced in a metallurgical process is slag, this can be justified. We have come to think of slag, however, in a more restricted sense, and calling these particles slag inclusions is further objectionable because it fosters the erroneous concept that they are actually incorporated portions of furnace slag. Rarely is this true. The term sonims (coined from solid nonmetallic impurities) was proposed many years ago but never came into common use. In general, the term non-metallic inclusions seems to be satisfactory and adequate. NATURE AND CONS1lTUTION OF NONMETALLIC INCLUSIONS From the standpoint of origin, inclusions fall naturally into two classes: (1) those occurring as a result of reactions taking place in the body of molten or solidifying metal and (2) those resulting from mechanical incorporation of refractories or other materials with which molten steel comes in contact. The former are by far the more numerous and have been called indigenous, natural, or native inclusions. The latter are by their very nature sporadic in occurrence and have been called exogenous, accidental, adventitious, or foreign inclusions. They are often referred to as the "slag-stringer" type, though here also the material is not likely to be furnace slag. Substances Found in Inclusions. Nonmetallic inclusions are composed principally of oxides and sulfides but carbides and nitrides sometimes play an important role. In the case of indigenous inclusions the reactions by which these particles are precipitated from molten or solidifying steel may be caused by: (1) oxidation such as may occur during refining or during tapping and teeming, (2) deoxidation by added alloys, (3) change

A1though the expanding Eltran1 configuration has been used in induced polarization exploration for several years, there has been little application of this method to straight resistivity problems. A comparison of results of resistivity exploration by this technique versus those obtained from Wenner configuration surveys reveals a number of advantages in interpretative resolution as well as in field operation. The application of electrical resistivity to ground-water exploration is well known.= In the past a major portion of this work has been accomplished by use of one or more variations of a technique employing the Wenner3 electrode configuration. With the introduction of the frequency domain technique of induced polarization measurements, used primarily in the exploration for disseminated sulfide deposits, there arose the need for an electrode configuration by which potentials could be measured externally to the current electrode spread in order to minimize coupling between current sending and potential receiving circuits. It was also deemed desirable that the configuration would provide information laterally along profile as well as with depth. To reach these objectives the expanding dipole-dipole configuration (which probably first was used in the electrical transient method of exploration and from which the name 'Eltran' was derived) has been adapted to induced polarization exploration. THIS paper gives the results : first, of a research into the somewhat extensive literature of titanium; and second, of a series of original tests upon the effect of titanium on iron castings. New investigations have also been made upon the effect of titanium on steel, but I hope to treat this subject in an independent paper at some later date, and, therefore, will not discuss the experiments in detail here. The combined results of this study, which extended over a period of more than two years, can be briefly summarized as follows: 1. Steel or cast-iron, in which the titanium is properly proportioned, and which has been properly treated, is improved in strength, toughness, and durability against wear, such as, for example, the wear of railroad-rails, of steel and chilled-iron .rolls, car-wheels, etc. 2. These improvements seem to be caused, not so much by the direct effect of titanium on the metal, as by its cleansing influence in removing harmful impurities, such as oxygen and oxides, nitrogen, occluded slags, and perhaps also sulphur. It appears also to reduce segregation, which would contribute to the same end. 3. In order that its effects may be fully realized, the treatment of steel or iron with titanium must be correctly performed. ACCORDING to recently published statistics, it is predicted that as much oil must be produced during the next 16 years as has been produced during the past 75, in order to satisfy the high rate of consumption of petroleum products. During 1934, over 17,000 oil wells were completed in the United States, and it is expected that over 20,000 additional wells will be drilled during the current year. Were it not for the remarkable progress made during recent years in the improvement of drilling technique and in the development of equipment used in the production phase of the oil industry, it is doubtful whether sufficient oil could be produced to meet present requirements. A few years ago, wells seldom were deeper than 3500 to 4000 ft., owing to the limitations of the drilling methods and equipment employed. Today, however, through the application of scientific drilling methods and the adaptation of modern equipment and improved materials, many wells range from 6000 to 8000 ft. in depth, and a few recent completions exceed 10,000 feet.

The primary recrystallization textures of 11 single crystals cold rolled 70 pct were determined. The effect of crystal orientation on recrystallization behavior was investigated also and found to be large. An exception was found to the relationship that strong components of the recrystolliza-tion texture are rotated from the cold rolled texture by 30° about <110> axes, but generally this relationship was found to hold quite well. Evidence supporting oriented nucleotion was found and discussed in terms of probable active slip systems and <110> edge dislocations. THE present paper is one of a series&apos;.&apos; on recrys-tallization phenomena in cold rolled 31/4 Si-Fe single crystals and is mainly concerned with the textures produced on recrystallizing from stable end orientations. Data for the cold rolled textures of the crystals used have been reported by Koh and Dunn." Their results showed that the sharpness of the cold rolled textures varied throughout the range of stable end orientations and that the tendency to re-crystallize was related to the sharpness of the cold rolled texture, wherein the rate of recrystallization increased and the size of recrystallization grains decreased with decreasing sharpness of the cold rolled texture. In the project under consideration the cold rolled crystals involved a range of initial orientations that, together with those studied earlier,&apos; provide information on several points. The first point is whether the recrystallization texture from a (111) [112] cold rolled texture, a stable end orientation that can be approached from different directions, correlates in any way with the initial orientation before cold rolling, or whether the recrystallization texture is entirely determined by the observable features of the cold rolled texture. The second point involves a preliminary study to see if the main components of the recrystallization textures correlate with the most probable active slip systems. The third point is to determine what effect departure from slip on one slip system has on the tendency to recrystallize. Experimental Procedure Nine specimens from a previous investigation and two additional ones from thicker stock (lot D) but of similar composition to the others were used in the present work. The latter two crystals, like the nine, were cold rolled to a reduction in thickness of 70 pct and the amount of widening was determined. Depending on their primary recrystallization behavior, the cold rolled crystals were given short or long anneals at temperatures of 980°C or higher. Table I summarizes the data on initial orientations, the textures obtained by cold rolling, and the anneals given to provide samples for the present work. Fine grained specimens were thinned to 0.002 in. thickness and placed in an integrating specimen holder. Chart recordings using a transmission X-ray method and MoKa radiation were obtained for diffraction from (110) planes. This method,&apos;,3 which gives data for all of the pole figure except a central region of 30" radius, proved sufficient to give generally five, and sometimes six, of the six possible pole concentration areas of any one component of the texture. These data, therefore, were generally adequate for a positive identification of each component present. The first texture obtained for specimen B-2 was poorly defined because of too coarse a grain structure and therefore too few crystals in each component for satisfactory X-ray reflections. The same

Successful hydraulic pressure treatment of oil and gas wells that have long producing intervals, multiple pay zones, fluid thief zones, or natural or induced fractures has long been a serious problem plaguing the petroleum industry. High fluid-injection rates, straddle packers, ball sealers, and either liquid or solid additives to the treating fluids are being used to cope with this difficult and costly problem.l-6 The use of ball sealers and straddle packers is limited, in practice, to wells that have been completed with perforated cemented casings or liners. Well stimulation with ball sealers and straddle packers is usually successful as long as the cement remains competent. The other techniques of diverting are used with all types of completions. However, there are two significant disadvantages of the high rate method: excessive horsepower requirements, and the need of large treating-fluid volume. Consequently, most well stimulation techniques that involve diverting depend upon ball sealers or granular materials. Liquid diverting agents, and some of the solid ones in use today, frequently will cause formation damage. On the other hand, the most popular particulate diverting agents often are so soluble in the treating fluid that they become largely ineffective; their particle size is severely reduced as they dissolve while being transported through thousands of feet of pipe to the formation face down hole. In our attempts to deal with the shortcomings of these diverting agents, we experimented with a large variety of potentially suitable deformable materials the solubility of which could be controlled. Following are the criteria for the diverting agent sought: 1. The material must be effective in reducing fluid loss to thief zones, including existing fractures and very high permeability layers in the formation to be pressure treated. 2. The material must have enough strength to bridge under the treating pressure. 3. The material must be insoluble or slowly soluble in the treating fluids so that the particles retain sufficient size to be effective after they reach the formation face. 4. The material must be completely soluble in the produced oil or condensate liquid so that it can be removed readily; it must not cause formation damage. A number of products consisting of various polymers blended with waxes and other solid hydrocarbons were examined. All these materials satisfied the criteria for a diverting agent and also exhibited some degree of plastic deformability. On the basis of initial tests of strength and hardness, several blends of wax and polymer were selected for extensive testing in the laboratory and the field. These compounds have congealing temperatures ranging from 140 to 190F; they are insoluble in water and soluble in oil. They conformed, therefore, to the criteria specified for a theoretically superior diverting agent. Laboratory and field tests were conducted using these wax-polymer materials to demonstrate that the use of a deformable diverting agent can significantly improve fluid diverting performance. Hydraulic fracturing methods for production stimulation have become a common procedure in the oil and gas industry. Fracturing treatments are performed on wells of various potentials to help increase the production rate. In addition to the desire for increased production is the need to predict what increase might be expected. This knowledge is useful in economical treatment planning to accomplish the desired production goals for the well. Theoretical production increases due to horizontal radial fractures may be calculated using equations developed from mathematical analyses and electrical models.1,2,6 It also is possible to predict theoretical production increases due to vertical fractures using curves developed from electrical3 and mathematical models.8 However, these studies assumed that the vertical fracture height and the formation height were equal, which may not be true." In addition, the final fracture height through which fluid is produced may not be equal to the created height. The development of vertical fracture proppant transport relationships has made unrealistic the assumption that propped fracture height is equal to created fracture height. Through the use of published proppant transport equations,4&apos;12 it is possible to calculate the height of a bed of propping agent deposited in a fracture of a given height. Assuming that the fluid flowing in the fracture moves through only the propped portion of that fracture (i.e., that the un-propped part of the fracture heals) it becomes essential to know how production increase varies with the ratio of propped fracture height to formation height. It should be recognized that future investigation may determine that the fracture does not heal completely and that a highly permeable channel exists over the deposited bed of proppant. The effect of this channel was not considered for the present study. The following analysis of experimental data allowed development of curves to determine theoretical production increases considering fracture height as a variable. Discussion In designing a fracturing stimulation treatment a number of variables must be considered. The size of the treatment, type of proppant used, proppant concentration, treatment fluid properties and well conditions are all factors affecting the dimensions and permeability of the fracture. Production increase due to a vertical fracture is affected by propped length, height, width and permeability of the fracture for a given set of formation conditions. If it does, frontal displace- ment occurs in the laboratory experiments, and oil INTRODUCTION Thc puposes of this paper are to present theoretical and experimental evidence for occurrence of macroscopic instabilities in displacement of one viscous fluid by another immiscible with it through a uniform porous medium and to compare available experimental data with some predictions of a theory of instability developed by the first author. The instabilities are referred to as macroscopic in the sense that spatially quasi-sinusoidal, growing fingers of the displacing liquid are formed, the width and peak-to-peak separation (wavelength) of which is large relative to a characteristic length of the particular permeable medium such as grain size. Visual models of two kinds have been used to obtain observations: displacement of oil by water-glycerine solutions through the flow channel formed by closely spaced parallel plates and displacement of oil by water with and without initial interstitial water through unconsolidated glass powder packs, employing the technique of matching indices of refraction. In all cases we have observed macroscopic instabilities or fingers under conditions predicted by the theory to be favorable for their occurrence. The phenomenon discussed here is not the production of streamers due to gross inhomogeneities such as permeability stratification of the porous medium. It is our object to show, on the contrary, that a quantitative prediction of finger spacing is possible in a porous medium known to be macroscopically homogeneous and isotropic throughout. The importance of the phenomenon in its influence on the configuration of oil and water with respect to oil production behavior was noted earlier by Engel-berts and Klinkenberg&apos; who coined the term "viscous fingering". MANY investigations of the rate of the sulfur transfer reaction between carbon-saturated iron and blast furnace type slags have been made." It is evident that the reaction is complex, the rate being affected by the presence of elements dissolved in the metal that are readily oxidized and therefore capable of existing in the slag phase. Thus Goldman, Derge, and Philbrook- have shown that carbon, silicon, manganese, and aluminum, in order of increasing effectiveness, accelerate sulfur transfer from iron containing these elements to blast furnace type slags. Quantitative information is still, however, not available on the relation between what have been termed side reactions, such as silicon transfer and CO evolution, and the sulfur transfer reaction itself. In other words, the stoichiometry of the reaction has not been investigated. In the present investigation, the transfer of all reacting elements and the evolution of CO have been measured simultaneously in order to establish the mechanism of the reaction which occurs in practice. Information of this nature cannot be deduced from equilibrium studies. It should be pointed out that in kinetic studies of this type quantitative conclusions are applicable only to the system studied. This restriction should be borne in mind when attempts are made to compare results from different investigations. Apparatus The apparatus used enables slag and metal samples to be taken at frequent intervals and also provides a continuous record of the amount of gas evolved. A sketch of the apparatus is given in Fig. 1. It may be considered in three sections: 1) furnace section, 2) blank volume section, and 3) pressure measuring section. THERE are three objectives in translation of works of this character : to give a faithful, literal translation of the author&apos;s statements ; to give these in a manner which will interest the reader ; and to preserve, so far as is possible, the style of the original text. The task has been doubly difficult in this work because, in using Latin, the author availed himself of a medium which had ceased to expand a thousand years before his subject had in many particulars come into being ; in consequence he was in difficulties with a large number of ideas for which there were no corresponding words in the vocabulary at his command, and instead of adopting into the text his native German terms, he coined several hundred Latin expressions to answer his needs. It is upon this rock that most former attempts at translation have been wrecked. Except for a very small number, we believe we have been able to discover the intended meaning of such expressions from a study of the context, assisted by a very incomplete glossary prepared by the author himself, and by an exhaustive investigation into the literature of these subjects during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. That discovery in this particular has been only gradual and obtained after much labour, may be indicated by the fact that the entire text has been re-typewritten three times since the original, and some parts more often ; and further, that the printer&apos;s proof has been thrice revised. We have found some English equivalent, more or less satisfactory, for practically all such terms, except those of weights, the varieties of veins, and a few minerals. In the matter of weights we have introduced the original Latin, because it is impossible to give true equivalents and avoid the fractions of reduction ; and further, as explained in the Appendix on Weights it is impossible to say in many cases what scale the Author had in mind. The English nomenclature to be adopted has given great difficulty, for various reasons ; among them, that many methods and processes described have never been practised in English-speaking mining communities, and so had no representatives in our vocabulary, and we considered the introduction of German terms undesirable ; other methods and processes have become obsolete and their descriptive terms with them, yet we wished to avoid the introduction of obsolete or unusual English ; but of the greatest importance of all has been the necessity to avoid rigorously such modern technical terms as would imply a greater scientific understanding than the period possessed. IT is now generally conceded that coal is the product of deposition and transformation of debris of forests and swamps.29 Ample data are available to illustrate the metamorphosis of biochemical substances through biological action; other data show the progressive regional metamorphism existing in coal beds;25 and numerous examples of change effected by intrusion of igneous dikes into coal deposits have been established.23 However, often the relative importance of the biological and the geological factor in determining the character of the various natural coals is a debatable question. Since both biological and geological factors are ever present in nature, the problem, at first glance, would appear to resemble certain probability problems: specifically the simultaneous toss of two coins, with the biological factor as heads and the geological as tails. The probability is 2:I for the combined effect of both factors, as compared to the exclusive effect of either one. if the a priori probability is the same for each factor. This condition can be analyzed by a thermodynamic treatment of data, which may be obtained from a consideration of pertinent biological, chemical, geophysical and geological facts. SYNOPSIS OF BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL FACTS The biosphere is not sterile; i.e., microorganisms are always present. Microorganisms have been established in the ocean deep, under the ice of the polar regions, in the sand of the deserts, and in swamps far below the surface. The various biological media may be acid, neutral, or alkaline, and they may or may not be readily accessible to air. Microorganisms are encountered almost everywhere, except where the temperature is not within the range tolerable by microbial life. Of course, with changing conditions, the type of microorganisms will change. All chemical products of life-proteins, fats, carbohydrates, lignins, waxes, resins may serve as a habitat of microorganisms. In the decomposition of a medium, some microorganisms macerate organic matter mechanically and remove certain constituents for their own nutrition; others decompose a large part of the organic matter but may leave certain constituents undecomposed. Some attack only certain specific ingredients of the organic matter. All of them build up cell substance. The nitrogen content of the medium largely determines the degree of decomposition. Below 1.7 per cent nitrogen, growth of microorganisms and hence decomposition of organic material is retarded; consequently organic material will accumulate. l7,32 Such accumulations of organic material may give coal eventually. Coals differ in type and rank. The nature of the original vegetation and the conditions attending the transformation of the accumulated debris determine the type of coal such as bright, splint, cannel, and algal or boghead coals. The Grace mine magnetite deposit, located 2 miles north of Morgantown in Berks County, Pennsylvania, was discovered in 1948 by an aerial magnetometer survey. It is situated on the southern border of the Triassic lowlands section of the Piedmont province. Cambrian sandstones, shales, and limestones overlie Precambrian crystalline rock and were folded and thrust-faulted during the late Paleozoic Appalachian revolution. Late Triassic continental sediments were deposited on the deformed basement rocks and were intruded by Late Triassic diabase dikes and sills before regional tilting and normal faulting occurred. The Grace mine magnetite ore is characteristic of the Cornwall type. The ore has replaced a Cambrian limestone lens isolated between Triassic diabase footwall and Triassic sedimentary rock hanging wall. The ore body is roughly tabular in shape, dips 20° to 30°NE and plunges about 20°N80°E. The ore is granular, fine- to medium-grained, typically consisting of unevenly distributed magnetite in a matrix of light green to white serpentine gangue. Magnetite is the major ore mineral, pyrite and chalcopyrite are common accessory minerals, and pyrrhotite occurs locally. Sphalerite, marcasite, galena, hematite, digenite, and goethite are uncommon. Serpentine, talc, and chlorite are the major gangue minerals; calcite and dolomite are common, and phlogopite, tremolite, and biotite are present locally. Apatite is a common accessory; sphene is rare. Calcium-magnesium silicates were formed first by contact metamorphism of impure limestone by the intruding diabase. Later, the silicates were altered hydrothermally to the serpentine- talc-chlorite assemblage now present. Magnetite, the first ore mineral, formed by replacing serpentine and was followed by pyritepyrrhotite and then by chalcopyrite-galenasphalerite. Marcasite, secondary pyrite, goethite, and hematite are secondary minerals resulting from alteration of pyrrhotite and magnetite. It is estimated that confining pressure was about 1500 bars and the temperature range was 500° to 675°C during ore formation.

Field measurements and theoretical studies have been made of pressure surges—momentary variations in fluid pressure—produced by movement of pipe in mud-filled boreholes. Pressure measurements were recorded by five pressure gauges located at various positions in the borehole. An important positive pressure peak was found to occur as the casing moved with maximum velocity. Important negative peaks were found as the casing was lifted from the slips and as brakes were applied to stop pipe movement. A rigorously formulated theory has successfully predicted the sequence and magnitudes of these positive and negative surges and has established a basis for understanding how they occur. Both the measurements and theory indicate that the most important pressure surge is usually due to viscous drag of the flowing mud. The theory of viscous-drag pressure surges has been approximated by simplified graphs and calculation procedures to facilitate ready use in field operations. Comparison of measured results with those predicted by the simplified theory shows that the magnitude of this surge can be predicted accurately. INTRODUCTION It is widely recognized that raising or lowering pipe in a fluid-filled borehole produces momentary variations in fluid pressure, commonly called pressure surges. Both negative (or "swabbing") surges and positive (or "fracturing") surges may occur. In 1934, Cannon1 measured the negative surges and showed that they could be large enough to cause flow of formation fluids into the well-bore and, in extreme cases, lead to blowout conditions. Later, Coins2 measured the positive surges associated with lowering pipe. His results and subsequent field operations strikingly demonstrated that pressure surges could be an important factor in some cases of lost returns. In addition, although the evidence is less clear than in the case of blowouts and lost returns, other investigators 3, 4 feel that pressure surges probably play a part in many instances of minor gas cutting, salt-water flow and other hole trouble. The importance of pressure surges in drilling operations led naturally to attempts to explain the physical causes, nature and magnitude of the surges. Cardwell5 was the first to publish a theory which allowed the quantitative prediction of momentary pressure variations. He assumed that the drilling fluid was a 300-cp Newtonian fluid in turbulent flow. Most field muds have a considerably lower viscosity and are generally believed to be Bingham plastic in nature.6 However, card-well&apos;s results were useful because they were presented in a form convenient for field use and, in some cases, gave a reasonably accurate predicted value for the maximum pressure surge. Subsequently, Ormsby7 published a more comprehensive theory of pressure surges. He discussed both laminar and turbulent flow and considered the theory of mud-bypass devices for reducing pressure surges. As a consequence of his more rigorous approach, his results were more accurate but more complex and difficult to use. Further, both Ormsby and Cardwell considered only the pressure surge arising from viscous drag of the moving mud. Clark later published idealized graphs of surges and presented equations for predicting their magnitudes. In addition to pressure variations arising from viscous drag, he considered those caused by inertial effects. His theory was in this respect more complete than those of Cardwell and Ormsby, although he did not discuss pressures due to breaking of the gel. Furthermore, his equations, while not exceptionally complicated, were too complex for ready use at a drilling location. One difficulty common to all three theories is that none was tested rigorously by direct comparison with measured pressure surges. Their accuracy, therefore, could, not be demonstrated. Further, the two theories based on most realistic assumptions (Ormsby and Clark) required the solution of one or more rather complex algebraic equations. The research described in this paper was undertaken to supplement that described and to overcome some of the difficulties noted. It seemed obvious that a fully satisfactory study of pressure surges should encompass three main phases. 1. A valid theory useful in all field situations must be developed. This theory must be based upon realistic assumptions, must be formulated rigorously and should lead to clear concepts whereby the nature of pressure surges can be easily understood. 2. The theory, however complex and involved, ultimately must be presented in simplified form for convenient field use. This may involve extensive machine computations and the use of figures and empirical equations. 3. The accuracy of the simplified equations must be established by comparing measured pressure surges with those predicted by the theory. These must agree both in their characteristic nature and in magnitude. &apos;This means that careful measurements of surges occurring in actual field operations must be made.

Tan investigation described in this paper deals with the development of high-temperature alloys of the Konel series over a considerable period of time at the Research Laboratories of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co. The word "Konel" has been coined to designate a class of alloys which are essentially nickel-cobalt-iron with other elements added, usually in small quantities. Most of these alloys contain titanium, usually about 2.5 per cent. The main consideration related to strength at high temperatures but the thermionic characteristics of the alloys was also of considerable importance. It is, however, with the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures that we are herein concerned. Much attention has also been devoted to their age-hardening characteristics. There is little need to stress the utilitarian aspect of this subject, as it has been discussed frequently. Alloys exhibiting superior properties at normal or elevated temperatures rapidly find many suitable applications. There may be some question, however, as to what constitutes a "superior alloy, " or an alloy that may have good service possibilities at high temperatures. The problem is complex and various means have been employed to predict the useful life that may be expected of a material. In recent years the "creep limit" has been used as the best means of evaluation. Such tests necessarily are prolonged and hence collection of data is very slow. In a general survey of many alloys therefore the creep test is not desirable and recourse must be had to much shorter time tests in order more rapidly to select alloys which appear to show promise. For this reason the present survey has been made using the high-temperature tensile test and a bend test developed by Howard Scott.1 In the tensile test the conditions have been standardized for all tests, so that values obtained are at least comparable, one alloy with another, although the absolute values recorded merely indicate the mechanical properties at the given temperature under a definite rate of loading.
