A considerable amount of work has been reported in the literature in regard to the texture and earing behavior of copper strip. The rolling texture of copper has been confirmed as (110) [112] and (112) [111], which yields ears of a drawn cup at the position 45" from the rolling direction.1-3 The recrystallization texture has been established as the cubic or (100) [001] texture, where the earing positions are at 0" and 90" to the rolling direction.4-8 It has also been reported that in the development of cubically aligned grains of copper strips, the percentage of this cubic texture increased with an increase of final reduction and final annealing temperature.8,9 A comprehensive study on H.C. copper (British commercial copper of high-conductivity quality = Cu 99.95 pct, O2 0.03 pct, Ag 0.003 pct, Fe 0.005 pct and Pb < 0.001 pct) was made by Cook and Richards.6 They concluded that the recrystallization textures could be described as one or more of the following textures: (1) a single texture (100) 10011, (2) a twin texture (110) [112] and (3) a random orientation, depending upon the previous history of the specimen concerned. The effect of various alloying additions in copper was reported by Dahl and Pawlek.10 They found that certain alloying additions, such as 5 pct Zn, 1 pct Sn, 4 pct Al, 0.5 pct Be, 0.5 pct Cd, or 0.05 pct P suppressed the formation of cubic texture. Brick, Martin and Angierll reported that the cold rolled textures due to various additions fitted a rather simple pattern. However, the recrystallization textures were subject to very considerable variations. In the discussion of this paper, Baldwin stated that deoxidized copper containing 0.02 pct P gave a complicated recrystallization texture at lower temperature. When this copper was annealed at high temperature, a single texture appeared which was described as (110) [ill] but. according to a pri- vate communication from Baldwin, this orientation reported was in error and should have been reported as (110)[112]. He also reported that the earing positions of drawn cups were at 60" to the rolling direction.12 Recently, Howald, in his discussion on the paper by Hibbard and Yen,13 reported that the rolling texture of phosphorus deoxidized copper, containing from 0.006 to 0.020 pct phosphorus, was of the pure copper type. When these coppers were annealed at lower temperatures, they exhibited a random orientation, and when they were annealed at higher temperatures they had a mixed (111)[110] and (100)[001] texture, depending on the severity of the final reduction and annealing temperature. However, the specific influence of phosphorus and other impurities on the recrystallization textures and the deep drawing properties of copper strip has not been thoroughly reported. Therefore, an attempt has been made in the present work to determine the rolling and recrystallization textures and also the earing behavior of five types of commercial copper and thereby to evaluate the effect of phosphorus and some other significant impurities on the development of texture for cold reductions of about 87 to 89 pct. Materials Used The five types of copper employed in the present investigation were two phosphorus deoxidized coppers of different phosphorus content (0.007 and 0.013 pct P), an oxygen-free copper (OFHC), an electrolytic tough-pitch copper, and a fire-refined tough-pitch copper. These materials were subjected to a thorough spectroscopic and chemical analysis. The designations and the chemical compositions were as shown in Table 1. The coppers, FA1, FA2 and FA3. were hot-forged from 3-in. billets into a ½ X 6-in. plate and cold rolled to the ready-to-finish gauge indicated below. FA4 and FA5 were hot rolled and scalped to ready-to-finish gauge. The grain size of all the materials in the ready-to-finish condition was about 0.030 to 0.045 mm. Table 2 shows the last stage of the production schedule for each copper strip used. Experimental Procedure ANNEALING, GRAIN SIZE AND HARDNESS DETERMINATIONS Specimens of each type of copper were finally annealed in air for periods of one hour at temperatures ranging from 300 to 1600°F and were subsequently cooled in air. The average grain diameter of the annealed specimen was estimated by comparing with a standard grain size chart. Hardness was determined on the Rockwell 15 T scale. CUPPING TESTS Cups were made in a blanking and drawing set, in which blanks of 2-in. diam were drawn to a cup of 1.25-in. diam with an average depth of about 0.75 in. The clearance between the punch and die was about 0.032 in. The ears of the cup were measured with a special fixture which read the height of ears to one-thousandth of an inch on every ten-degree interval along the circumference of the cup. POLE FIGURES The usual transmission diffraction method with unfiltered copper radiation was employed to determine the pole-figures of the specimens cold-rolled or annealed at 900°F. In September, 1975, production was begun at the new milling facility of ASARCO Incorporated, the Young Mill. The mill is located adjacent to the Young Mine 35 km (22 miles) east of Knoxville, Tennessee. The Young Mill replaced the obsolete Mascot Mill which had been operating since 1913. The basic flow sheet of Mascot was retained for the construction of the Young Mill, with a 20% increase in capacity included in the design. The Young Mill is capable of processing 7710 - t/d (8500 stpd) of crude ore from three underground mines (Young, Immel and Coy) yielding 300 - t/d (330 stpd) of 63% zinc concentrate. The Young Mill is unique in that 92.5% of the ore milled is recovered as saleable products, including zinc concentrate, construction aggregate, sand and agricultural limestone. Processing at the Young Mill is divided into five basic stages: two-stage crushing, heavy media separation, grinding-flotation, concentrate filtering and drying, and limestone by-products recovery. The ore bodies are located in the Knox formation, which consists of primary dolomite, secondary dolomite and limestone with silicas in the form of chert and jasperoid. The zinc mineralization occurs as an exceptionally pure sphalerite. The ore contains an occasional abundance of pyrite and traces of fluorite and barite. TWO STAGE CRUSHING Ore enters the crushing section from two points. The Young Mine ore is hoisted into a 816 ton (900 st) bin which feeds a 1.52m (60 in) conveyor via a 1.52 m (60 in) vibrating feeder. The Immel ore is trucked 10 km (6 miles) by an independent contractor and weighed on automatic recording truck scales at the entrance to the property.

Union Carbide has recently developed two open- pit vanadium mines in the Wilson Srpings area of central Arkansas about five miles southeast of Hot Springs. The ores from these mines, together with those from a larger vanadium deposit at nearby Magnet Cove, are processed at a new 1600- tpd plant built by the company in the immediate vicinity (Fig. 1). The Wilson Springs vanadium deposits are associated with the Potash Sulfur Springs intrusive, a circular igneous complex which is exposed over an area that is somewhat less than a mile in diameter.1 The complex has a crude ring structure similar to that of the larger Magnet Cove instrusive six miles to the east.2

SEVEN years ago there was installed in the hospital of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co. at Kellogg, Idaho, an ultra-violet ray quartz lamp, the standard equipment which is found everywhere in the offices of physicians and among usual hospital equipment. The use of this lamp was con- fined largely to treatment of pathological cases, still treatment of under-nourished children, run-down anemic people, both men and women, and, as a general tonic, was part of the routine hospital procedure. At the latitude of the Ceur d&apos;Alene district and especially because of the position of the towns in deep canyons, with much overcast and cloudy weather, sunshine is not plentiful at any time of the year; for many of the winter months there is scarcely any. Underground workers, particularly during the winter, have little sun- shine; it is not unusual to have none at all for weeks at a time. Treatment by the ultra-violet ray lamp in the hospital has resulted in many extraordinary benefits but the use of the lamp is expensive and limited. Some weeks ago attention was directed to the automatic solarium equipment of the Burdick Corporation. The doctors strongly recommended the increased use of the ultra-violet lamp for its curative powers and tonic effects, urging that it be made accessible to all employees. Real interest was . . also displayed by employees with the possibility of securing ultra-violet ray treatment for themselves and families under better conditions than it was possible to have by the limited use of the lamp at the hospital. This resulted in the installation of the so-called sun room or automatic solarium as an adjunct to the mine change-house. An annex was built to the change-house, with dressing rooms for women, children and men from other departments, and the outfit put into use on Sept. 5, 1929. THE metallurgical polarization microscope has been utilized in several researches in the last few years, thus attaining a fair degree of prominence, but little has been written in a manner suitable to a metallurgist concern-ing the theory of this instrument. In this investigation the theory was carefully studied, and the results are presented here in a detailed manner, yet as simply as possible. The theory is discussed with particular reference to the three chief functions of the instrument: (1) determination of anisotropy; (2) effect of strain; and (3) identification of inclusions. Each of these is investigated experimentally, with especial attention to the mechanism of producing any effect. Where possible, the discussion is supplemented by photomicrographs. The instrument used had numerous defects as a polarization microscope; these and their remedies are discussed. In the microscopic study of transparent mineral sections (chal-cography) the use of polarized light has aided tremendously in the identification of a mineral. The determination of strain in transparent substances (photoelasticity) by the use of polarized light has lately become a commercial process, used in testing finished glass articles. The success of the use of polarized light with opaque materials has not been so great. The magnitude of the effects obtained is much less than that of the corresponding effects with transparent materials, and the mechanical difficulties are much greater. YVO4:EU, excited under 3650A radiation, shows a marked increase in total brightness with in~rease in temperature. At 25°C the response to 3650A radiation is about 48 pct of its maximum response which occurs at about 350°C, Fig. 1. In an attempt to explain the phenomenon, one of the present authors&apos; (R.K.D.) investigated the diffuse reflectance spectra of the phosphor at different temperatures (up to -150°C) and was unable to observe any significant change to which the increased brightness could be reasonably ascribed. Since then diffuse reflectance spectra at elevated temperatures have been obtained in this laboratory using an improved device. A significant decrease in the diffuse reflectance of a phosphor in the ultraviolet region—especially in the longer wavelength region—at -300°C has been observed. The purpose of this note is to describe the device used for high-temperature reflectance measurements and to explain the increased brightness of YVO4:Eu phosphor at elevated temperatures under 3650A excitation. The high-temperature allotropy of some heavy rare-earth metals and their alloying behavior with magnesium in the 0 to 50 at. pct Mg region was studied by thermal, microscopic, and X-ray methods. Examination of a hcc phase retained upon quenching alloys of different magnesium content confirmed the existence of a bcc high-temperature allotrope in pure gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, and lutetium. The lattice constants of the pure metals were determined from a Vegard&apos;s Law extrapolation and .found to be 4.05, 4.02, 3.98, 3.96, 3.94, 3.92, and 3.90 + 0.02 A, respectively. In all of the systems studied, the high-temperature bcc phase decomposed eutec-toidally, when slowly cooled, into a hexagonal rare earth-Mg solid solution and a simple-cubic peritec-tic AB-type compound. In 1956, Spedding et al.&apos; observed high-temperature resistivity anomalies in the light rare-earth metals and made several unsuccessful attempts to retain the high-temperature form of these materials at room temperature by quenching the pure metals from temperatures near their melting points. High-temperature X-ray techniques were used by Spedding et a1.&apos; in 1959, to investigate the high-temperature allotropy of the rare-earth metals. This study showed that lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, ytterbium, and possibly gadolinium are bcc at temperatures near their melting points. Discontinuous changes in resistivity at elevated temperatures were also observed for pure gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, and lutetium, thus indicating the possible existence of a high-temperature crystalline transformation in these metals. However, due to experimental difficulties encountered in the high-temperature X-ray analysis of these metals, their allotropic form was not identified. Spedding et a~.~ in 1960 observed that yttrium displayed a continuous solid solubility with lanthanum at elevated temperatures, thus showing the high-temperature structure of yttrium to be the same as that of lanthanum, i.e., bcc. Similarly, the high-temperature alloying behavior of gadolinium with yttrium showed gadolinium to be bcc at elevated temperatures. The bcc nature of the high-temperature form of yttrium was again recognized in 1960 by Eash and carlson4 in their study of the alloying behavior of yttrium with thorium. Gibson and Carlson, in a similar study of the alloying behavior of yttrium with magnesium, found that by quenching Y-Mg alloys from within the 0-solid solution region, Fig. l, they were able to retain the allotropic form of yttrium. It was the present authors&apos; intention to use this method to show the existence of a bcc high-temperature form of the heavy rare-earth metals gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, and lutetium. Simultaneous with the present work, Beaudry and Daane&apos; have shown the bcc nature of the high-temperature form of scandium. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials. The rare-earth metals used in this study were prepared by the calcium reduction of the fluoride and were further purified by vacuum distillation. I DESIRE to submit, for the consideration and information of the members of the Institute, the following data, drawings, and tables, showing what I believe will be interesting information with regard to the diamond drill, and its uses in developing mineral lands. I would first say that the results given have been obtained during the past two years by means of two drilling machines belonging to the Lehigh Valley Coal Company, operating on their coal lands in the Mahanoy, Lehigh, and Wyoming regions. 1st. A tabulated statement, giving location of borings, date, progress, total cost, itemized cost per foot, etc. 2d. Section showing strata bored in Nos. 5 and 10 holes at Mt. Carmel, see Plate VI. 3d. Section showing strata bored in No. 19 hole at Hazleton, see Plate VI. 4th. Photograph and description of drill No. 2. From the first it will be seen that the total number of test-holes bored up to May 1st of this year is 24; 9 of these are in the Mahanoy region, 6 in the Lehigh region, and 10 in the Wyoming region, in all of which cores have been taken for the whole distance. The total distance bored is 9902 feet. The majority of the holes have been put down for the purpose of proving the lower veins of the coal series, and have had to encounter the harder rocks of the coal formation. Much of the distance has been through the lower conglomerates, going in some cases through the coarse egg conglomerate, the foundation of the coal deposit, and to the green sandstone and red shale which underlie it. These lower sandrocks and conglomer¬ates are among the hardest known to geologists, and present a formidable resistance to the exploring drill. This fact must be taken into consideration in comparisons of cost of drilling, and when considered will still further improve the very favorable results I am able to show in my statement of costs. In illustration, I will cite the work of one bit when boring in the upper or softer rocks of the Wyoming region, where 280 feet were obtained without resetting, while in the Lehigh and Mahanoy regions, in the lower and harder rocks, bits set with the same quality of diamonds would only bore from 3 to 20 feet before being worn out. In the first table, on page 198, is given the averages of a number of analyses of gases of different furnaces, and in the second, of two stacks of different sizes under varying circumstances. The conclusions arrived at as to what influences the production of CO2 are as follows: 1st. Kind of fuel. Bituminous coal not permitting the formation of as much CO2 as coke. 2d. Kind of ores. Rolling-mill cinder being much less favorable to formation of CO2 than hematite ores, magnetites probably less than hematites, but more than cinder. 3d. Length of time of contact of gases with ore. Small furnaces and too rapid driving both waste fuel by not allowing enough time for conversion of CO into CO2. 4th. The temperature of blast. The hotter the greater the quantity of CO2. 5th. Regularity of passage of stock through the furnace. The hanging and dropping of the stock, however slight, seems to pack it more solidly in the hearth, increases the resistance to the blast, and decreases the quantity of CO,. These are the most common causes noticed which influence the production of CO2, unless we except the one that might be considered the greatest of all, the one that has spoiled so many tons of iron, and the amiability of so many furnacemen, the one most dreaded, the great unknown. It would seem a self-evident proposition that the better the contact of the gases with the ore and the less with the fuel, the greater would be the amount of CO2 produced. To prolong the contact of gas with the ore furnaces are enlarged with advantage, and pains are taken to charge the stock in such a, manner as will best promote it. Still, with furnaces of most approved construction and most skilful manipulation, the gases leave the furnace so rich in CO, that not half the heating power of the fuel is obtained, and the highest

THERE is little quantitative information available concerning the effect of applied stress, in both the elastic and plastic ranges, on diffusion kinetics. Accordingly, a program has been undertaken to determine the rate of self-diffusion in high purity iron, with the specimens subjected to stress during the course of diffusion. Results are reported here for body-centered cubic iron at a diffusion temperature of 890°C. The iron used was 99.97 pct Fe, the principal impurities being 0.002 pct C, 0.008 pct 0, and 0.02 pct Si. The surface-decrease method of self-diffusion analysis was employed, and Fe55 Mn x-radiation, 2.9 years half-life) was the tracer element. Details of specimen preparation and equipment are given elsewhere.&apos; Disks of the high purity iron, % in. diam x 1/4 in. thick, were annealed at 890°C for 18 hr in dry hydrogen to produce large grains of a ferrite. The faces of the disks were then surface ground, and possible grinding stresses were relieved by annealing at 890 °C for 45 min in vacuum. A layer of radioactive iron 0.00186 cm thick was electroplated on one face of each disk. The self-diffusion coefficient was calculated from the ratio of the radiation intensities emanating from each of these faces, as measured before and after diffusion.&apos; The heating was carried out in a vacuum furnace (10-5 mm Hg) controlled to ±1.5°C. The specimens were loaded in compression between two quartz disks during the diffusion runs by means of a lever system operating through a vacuum seal. Thus one quartz disk was pressed directly against the radioactive face of the specimen, minimizing the vapor loss of radioactive iron. Steady-state creep occurred in all instances where permanent deformation could be detected, but the specimens did not exhibit appreciable transverse barreling until natural strains of 0.2 to 0.3 were attained. Essentially, the diffusion took place under uniaxial stress. The plastic strain in each case was obtained at the diffusion zone by measuring the diameter d there before and after the run: e = 2 In — do Let Du equal the self-diffusion coefficient which would have prevailed at the given temperature if no stress had been applied. SOME information has been published on the sulphur dioxide concentration of gases from Dwight-Lloyd machines sintering lead ores but most of this relates to the customary practice in which the charge is relatively high in lead and is sintered in two passes over the machine. It is thought, therefore, that the following observations on sintering in one pass a low-lead, low-sulphur charge may be of interest. The data were obtained in sintering lead sulphide flotation concentrates mixed with minus 20-mesh oxide ore, the mixture carrying 16.8 per cent Pb and 5.3 per cent S. No returns were used because of the limited amount of sulphur available as fuel, but the mixture pelletized readily to make a satisfactorily permeable bed on the sintering machine. As there was a possibility that the SO2 might be utilized, a series of runs was made to determine the concentration of SO2 in the gases at different points along the wind box, and the effect on this concentration of changes in the wind-box vacuum. Several runs each were made with vacuums (as measured in inches of water at the wind box) of (1) 2 to 1 3/4 in., (2) 4 to 3 1/2 in. and (3) 6 to 5 1/8 in. The averages of the determinations from each series are platted on the graph (Fig. I). The vertical scale shows the percentage by volume of SO2 (as determined by the Reich method), and the horizontal scale shows the time expressed as percentage of the total sintering time. Sintering was considered to be complete when no SO2 could be detected in the gases. In all cases the depth of bed was 4 1/2 in. and the weight of dry charge per square foot of hearth area was 45.2 lb. Other data are given in the table. The volume of gases corresponding to the several points along the wind box at which SO2 determinations were made could not be measured, but has been calculated from the SO2 content and sulphur elimination on the assumption that the volume is uniform throughout the sintering period. This is not strictly true, as with a given vacuum the volume will usually drop slightly toward the middle of the period and increase toward the end. However, this assumption is a reasonable approximation. Several interesting features are brought out by these data. In general, the published data on SO2 concentration in sintering under ordinary conditions show a high SO2 concentration in the early stages followed by a rapid decrease in concentration and with relatively little SO2 in the gases from the last half or third of the operation. In other words, the greater part of the sulphur elimination is obtained in the first third or half of the period. In these runs, the 6-in. vacuum, which approximates the usual operating condition, gives a curve that follows this customary pattern. Maximum SO2 concentration is obtained 2 ½ min. after

Season cracking of brass has received wide attention and there is a wealth of technical literature on the subject. Its causes arc fairly well understood and means for its prevention are inexpensive and effective, so that the frequency of failures from this source has diminished of recent years. But its sister phenomenon, the failure of annealed brass by reason of applied tensile stress plus a certain type of corrosion, has received less attention, though it has been responsible for occasional more or less troublesome cases of cracking of brass in service. The work described in the following pages was undertaken about two years ago to determine the relative resistance of various commercial brass mixtures to stress-corrosion cracking, and to learn something of the controlling factors. By stress-corrosion cracking we mean the cracking of brass free from internal stresses by reason of applied tensile stress and simultaneous attack by certain corrosive agents. Rogers,&apos; in discussing a paper by Hatfield and Thirkell, says: " He had also applied a solution of mercuric salt to tensile test pieces of brass whilst they were under stress in the testing machine. At very moderate stresses such test pieces cracked, and very readily broke." Moore, Beckinsale and Mallinson2 subjected test pieces to simultaneous corrosion and tensile stress. In order to determine the minimum stress detectable in brass by the mercurous nitrate test, tensile samples were placed under stress and treated with mercurous nitrate solution. They found that brass stressed below a minimum did not crack. Dr. McAdam3 has investigated the effect of corrosion on the fatigue limit of brasses, among other materials. He directed a stream of either fresh or salt water against the specimen while it was undergoing fatigue test. The corrosion-fatigue limits thus determined may be considerably lower than the endurance limit without coincident corrosion. The exact

DURING the past few years the amazing developments of the chemical industry have inspired so much publicity that the feature writers assure us that we are entering a "Chemical Age," industrially as important as the "Steel Age" and the "Electric Age," so-called. Whether or not these assurances are overstatements, it is a fact that the expansion of the chemical industry during the past 25 years has been enormous. The Chemical Bureau of the War Production Board calculates the value of chemicals produced during 1944 at $8,300,000,000, no small sum even in inflated dollars. As concerns us of the Southwest oil and gas country, four significant trends of the chemical industry are most important. (1) Many of the recently developed chemical products are new creations, not substitutes,. as new and original as the invention of the light bulb, and with a field for exploitation almost as wide. (2) Many of these chemical products will enter the mass consuming markets, which require enormous tonnages of products, and such markets are setting up an industrial demand for chemicals on a mass volume basis, compared to the relatively high-priced low-volume basis ordinarily considered as the chemical outlet of the past. (3) Most of the processes involved in producing these chemicals are adapt. able to the use, all or in part, of natural gas, oil, or refinery gases as raw mate-
