A progress report is presented on the development of a process for the removal of sulfur dioxide from flue gases. Catalytic oxidation of the sulfur dioxide in flue gases, with the production of recoverable sulfuric acid, has been demonstrated to be technically feasible. Problems associated with the process are discussed. The need for an inexpensive and efficient process for controlling sulfur dioxide emissions from utility plant stacks has been accentuated by the ever-increasing public demand for elimination of all man-made air pollutants. I would like to describe the results of an investigation of the development of such a process; more important, I would like to present a discussion of the problems associated with the process which remain to be solved. The research work on the BCR catalytic gas phase oxidation process has been jointly sponsored by the Association of Edison Illuminating Cos., Edison Electric Inst. and Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., since 1958. However, work on SO2-pollution abatement was initiated by BCR in 1953. Tieman and Clymer,1 working with ozone and simulated flue gases, evaluated a gas phase oxidation process for removing SO2 from flue gases. Their experimental data indicated that the use of ozone to oxidize SO2 in flue gas concentrations, with subsequent recovery of H2SO4, did not appear to be economical due to the large ratio of ozone to sulfuric acid produced (2.6 to 1). The cost of the ozone would be 6 to 10 times the cost of sulfuric acid produced. As a result of the ozone study, work on a catalytic oxidation process was developed. The following reactions are the basis for the catalytic oxidation process Reaction [I] normally occurs in the combustion of sulfur-bearing fuels. At the high temperature found in the combustion chamber, 95% to 99% of the sulfur in the fuel is oxidized to SO2 and 1% to 5% is oxidized to SO3. The concentration of SO2 in the combustion gases depends on the combustion efficiency and the quantity of excess air used. A commonly used rule of thumb is 0.1 percent by volume SO2 in the flue gas for each 1% sulfur in the fuel. Reaction [2] proceeds at a wide range of temperatures. The rate of the reaction is rapid above l,000°F; however, the equilibrium conversion drops rapidly above this temperature. 2 Reaction [3] occurs rapidly to completion at temperatures below 400°F; above this temperature some SO3 exists in equilibrium with H2SO4. Complete dissociation of H2SO4 occurs above 650°F.3 The simplicity of the proposed process provided added incentive to the development and evaluation of the various component unit operations. The advantages of the process were considered to be as follows: 1) no raw materials were required, 2) the unit operations were not radically new; and 3) a salable product, sulfuric acid, would be produced. The successful development of the process was contingent upon the solution of several major problems: 1) The development of a catalyst which would provide high catalytic activity at reasonable conditions of gas flow and temperature without causing an unacceptable increase in pressure drop. 2) The development of a high temperature dust collection system to provide clean flue gases to the catalytic reactor. 3) The complete recovery of the sulfuric acid produced in the process; the effluent gas must contain less than 20 ppm by volume of sulfuric acid. As of this date, the complete solution to these problems has not been achieved. EXPERIMENTAL Catalyst Development: The use of platinum and vanadium catalysts for the production of sulfuric acid by the treatment of dry gases containing 5% to 20% by volume sulfur dioxide has been known for many years. SPEED-UP of production of crude oil and its products, accompanied by rising prices and the organization of the industry on a war basis, featured the economic aspects of petroleum in 1941. Early in the year American tankers were urgently requested by the British to replace losses and offset slower transit under convoy. Some forty American owned tankers were first assigned to Britain and an additional forty-odd ships were transferred during the summer. This threatened to reduce our transportation facilities from Gulf ports to the Eastern seaboard below requirements, especially should sinkings have increased and the British needed more ships. Co-ordinator Ickes began preparations for restricting gasoline consumption in the Eastern district and plans were formulated for the construction of an emergency trunk pipe line from Texas to New York and Philadelphia refining centers, and for a gigantic tanker-building program. Sales of new oil-heating units in the East practically ceased. The companies were urged to transport as much oil as possible by tank car and by October 140,000 barrels of oil per day were reaching the East Coast district by rail, sufficient to meet 8 per cent of total requirements. But British sinkings from July through October decreased 63 per cent compared with the four months ended June 30, Britain began the return of tankers, the construction plans were dropped, and the threatened shortage was thus averted.

In a recent paper1 the authors presented information on a refinement of the Rohn type of creep test with data on pure iron that exemplified the behavior of the apparatus. The present paper extends that work to nickel and cobalt and to the examination of the comparative high-temperature properties of two widely used commercial alloys. Careful attention has been given to the effect of plastic deformation in decreasing creep rate, using the elementary metals iron, nickel and cobalt for purposes of analysis. In any endeavor to develop new materials for high-temperature service one soon encounters a real problem as to the sort of test to be employed in evaluating the commercial possibilities of the alloys. At one time it was considered satisfactory to determine the tensile strengths at elevated temperatures and to use these values as a criterion for the commercial application of the alloys. More recently the proportional limit has been used as a means of classification. Data obtained from a form of bend test have also shown promise as providing a "merit index" of high-temperature serviceability.= Koerber and Pomp3 state that since the influence of testing time is small, the high-temperature yield point of steel furnishes sufficiently reliable and concordant values up to about 350" C. (and a maximum of 450" C. for alloy steels) to serve as a suitable basis for comparison evaluations of materials and for judging permissible stresses. Koerber and Pomp consider, however, that above these temperatures creep limit must be substituted for the high-temperature yield point as the all-important characteristic of the material. THe properties required of gold alloys for jewelry are not well standardized, due in part to problems peculiar to certain branches of the jewelry industry, in part to the individual preference of the fabricator and to his willingness to cope with certain difficulties in manufacture, which arise with the use of certain alloys. General Requirements In general, the properties desired may be classed as follows: 1. Color should conform to the dictates of good taste and smart style. 2. Corrosion resistance and tarnish resistance should he good. This is to a considerable extent determined by the carat. Resistance to such corrosive agents as mercuric chloride as well as certain depi1atories is unreasonable to expect and difficult to meet. 3. Strength and hardness must be adequate to maintain the delicate contours of finely modeled jewelry. 4. Wear resistance must be great enough to resist abnormal wear, such as is encountered by a wedding ring in a lifetime of wear. 5. Ductility must be sufficient to permit the fabrication of drawn shells, tubes and difficult shapes. Material having a yield point of not less than 60,000 lb. per sq. in., an ultimate strength of 100,000 Ib. per sq. in., and an elongation of 40 per cent. is desirable. 6. Melting point should be between 800" and 1200" C. Colored Golds The popular green and yellow golds are based on the gold-silver-copper alloys; in some cases modified by the introduction of zinc to improve the casting properties and to alter the color, and nickel to increase the strength. The properties of the Au-Ag-Cu system have been the subject of a very thorough investigation by Jänecke,l Sterner-Rainer12 and Carter."

By means of electrokinetic measurements, the surface properties of the aluminosilicate polymorphs (sillimanite, andalusite, and kyanite) and also mullite have been found to depend on the ratio of A10 bonds to SiO bonds in the surface. The Al-toSi ratio in the surface is dependent upon the crystal lographic properties of the mineral, which in turn determine coordination numbers of A1 and of Si, cleavage characteristics, and density of the various solids. Mullite with a greater bulk Al-toSi ratio has the highest zpc of the aluminosilicates. By treatment in dilute acids or by cycling between acidic and basic solutions, alumina is selectively dissolved from the surface of these orthosilicates. This shifts the apparent zpc to lower pH values as the fraction of SiO groups in the surface increases. Thus, surface properties can be altered by procedures that alter the A l-to-Si ratio in the surface. Flotation of these aluminosilicates results from electrostatic interaction of the collector ions with the mineral surfaces. As a result, flotation response shifts in accord with any shift in apparent zpc by pretreatment. Separation of minerals by flotation is based on differences in the physicochemical properties of their surfaces.'-3 For many minerals, adsorption of flotation collectors results from their functioning as counter ions in the electrical double layer at solid-water interface. In such systems, separation depends on differences in the zero point of charge (zpc) of the various minerals. The zpc is defined as the concentration of potential determining ions in solution at which the surface is uncharged. The potential determining ions for inorganic oxide-water interfaces are hydrogen and hydroxyl.4,5 This work is concerned with the effects of crystal structure, composition, and surface preparation on the surface properties and flotation behavior of aluminosilicates. Differences resulting from crystal structure were studied by measuring electrokinetic potentials and determining the flotation behavior of three different aluminosilicate materials having the same chemical composition (Al2O3 SiO2), namely andalusite, kyanite, and sillimanite. Furthermore, the effect of the Al2O3-to-SiO2 ratio on flotation behavior and surface properties was investigated by including synthetic mullite, 3A12O3 .2SiO2. Gaudin and co-workers 6,7 have clearly shown how crystal structure determines the native floatability of certain minerals. Those solids in which the surface is comprised mainly of broken residual bonds possess naturally hydrophobic surfaces. It was found by Bakakin8 that for a number of oxidized lead minerals, differences in floatability were due to the distance of Pb atom from the surface. Only limited work has been done on relating electrical properties of surfaces to crystal structure and composition. Healy et. a1.9 found that the zero points of charge of various manganese dioxides ranged from about pH 1.5 to pH 7.5, and these differences in the zpc's were interpreted in terms of the atomic packing in the various crystals. The research presented here clearly shows that crystal structure and chemical composition do affect the surface properties of aluminosilicates and, in addition, that these effects can be altered by changing conditions under which the surfaces are prepared. CRYSTAL STRUCTURE OF THE ALUMINOSILICATES Sillimanite, andalusite, and kyanite are composed of regionally metamorphosed rocks differing mainly in degree of metamorphism. All three minerals have the same chemical composition, Al2O3 - SiO2, of which sillimanite is the high temperature polymorph and kyanite and andalusite the lower temperature polymorphs. Andalusite and sillimanite crystallize in the orthorhombic system while kyanite crystallizes in the triclinic system. The structure of these three minerals is essentially chains of aluminum-oxygen octahedra linked laterally by silicon and aluminum. The arrangement of these chains in the three minerals is shown in Fig. 1.l4

LOS ALAMOS, New Mexico, the birthplace f the atomic bomb, is one of the most famous-and mysterious-places in the world. It leaped into fame on Aug. 6, 1945, when the first atomic bomb burst over Hiroshima. Unheard of until that day, its present life is as hidden from most people as was its very existence in pre-Hiroshima days. Then, those who did know of it dared not breathe their knowledge. "What do you tell your wife when you go to Shangri La?" was the favorite quip of the few consultants who made regular trips from east or west to Los Alamos during the tense months when the bomb was in the making. Security regulations made it impossible even to hint at the rigid secrecy surrounding the project. The puzzled wives in question knew only that their husbands had top priority on airplane flights to Albuquerque. When they had verified the safe arrival of the flight, they undoubtedly breathed a sigh of relief. If they could have visualized the rest of the trip, the sigh of relief would have been replaced by a state of tizzy, until a telegram came saying "Arriving home on Flight X" (on a nice safe airplane).

BEFORE the war we often heard the term "Big Business." And there were complaints of the ills and abuses attributed to bigness in business. Although there were examples where the small businessmen spoke for their rights and sought protection from the bigger ones, it has only been in recent war years that a tendency has developed definitely to divide the business of our nation into the big and the small. In some cases, those with an eye to the political value of the vastly greater number of small businessmen of the country have fomented this division by hurrying to the protection of these more numerous voters, and intentionally or not have emphasized in their writings and verbal attacks any and all differences of these interests that could either be found or fabricated to, suit the occasion. It has become another example of breaking the people into classes and thus setting up the basis for the claims of one class against another, and the subsequent demand for legislation and Governmental aid. The terms "big" and "small" are purely relative. One businessman, employing a hundred men, told me recently he did not know which adjective would be more appropriately applied to his operation. He did not know whether he should join the small operators' group that had been organized, or should consider himself big. He said that his present plant seemed big to him when he looked back to its humble beginning many years ago with a couple of men in two rooms. Yet, when compared with many of his competitors who employ thousands, his was small. He did add, however, that he probably became big one day a few years ago when the union moved in and organized his employees.

AT the Regional meeting in Columbus, Ohio, in September 1949, the authors presented a progress report of the first year's operation with a Hardinge tricone mill in closed circuit with a Dorr hydroscillator. The present report covers our findings on this grinding circuit to January, 1950. In order to clarify our position, the authors wish to state that no invention or discovery is claimed. The Tennessee grinding circuit is simply an engineered arrangement of known equipment arranged to incorporate all of the recognized efficiency factors of comminution as they are known today. As we concluded our first report, it was not clear how effective the Tennessee mode of operation would be on harder ores. The only information we had at that time was that the Bond grindability test at 48-mesh gave 6.04 g of undersize per revolution. A later test on the same sample at 100-mesh reduced this to 2.04 g, which is definitely in the harder ore class, and which makes the reported 8.80 kw-hr per ton of -200-mesh produced a very creditable figure.

microscopic ohservations on alloys of organic trzaterials show that dendrite arms can melt off under normal conditiorzs of growth. This occurs because of the interactiorz of' heat and matter fluxes during dendritic growth. The re melting occurs where the den-drite arms are joined onto the main deizclrite sterrz. Many detached crystals can be produced in this fashion. It is postulated that this remelting phenornenon occurs in metal alloys, giving rise to the equi-axed region in castings. Experiments peyformed orr castings of transparent materials support remelting as a primary source of detached crystals. Ob~ervations an equiaxed tones in metal castings are discussed in terms of this and other mechanisms. It is concluded that the partial remelting of dendrites is on important mechanisnl for producing the equiaxed regions in castings. THE freezing of a casting can be divided into three regions: a chill zone formed near the mold wall, a columnar region, and a third region, at the center of the casting, which is called the equiaxed zone. The origin of the grains that comprise the equiaxed region is the subject of this paper. We will first outline the mechanisms which have been proposed to account for the origin of the equiaxed region and discuss some recent experiments which cannot be explained by these theories. We will then present some microscopic observations of dendritic growth which have led us to conclude that the equiaxed zone in castings can arise from partial remelting of dendrites. This proposal is supported by observations on transparent castings. Finally, we will discuss several observations on metal castings which could not be explained previously, and which can be accounted for by the present proposal. Previous Mechanisms. Winegard and Chalmers3 pointed out that the molten central region of an ingot could be constitutionally supercooled, because of the solute layer at the growing interface. In this supercooled region, nucleation on particles could occur, giving rise to the equiaxed crystals. Another mechanism has also been suggested,4y5 that the nuclei originate in the chill zone then float or are carried by convection to the center of the casting, where they grow to produce equiaxed crystals. In this case, all the crystals nucleate immediately on casting, so this mechanism will be termed "big-bang" nucleation. Walker's Experiments. J. L. Walker has made observations on the solidification of nickel and Ni-Cu alloys which cannot be accounted for by either of the above mechanisms. In studying the grain size resulting from freezing of nickel at various undercoolings, walker6 found that at large undercoolings the grain size was small, due to mechanical nucleation, as discussed by walker7 and Horvay.' At small undercoolings, the grain size was large, and the growth dendritic. In Ni-Cu alloys, however, for initial undercoolings starting from just below the melting point and extending for a hundred or so degrees of undercooling, fine grains were also observed. Samples were undercooled 200 Centigrade degrees without nucleating, and were then heated 130 Centigrade degrees so that the undercooling was 70 Centigrade degrees, and nucleated. The samples had a small grain size, indicating multiple nucleation. There were no heterogeneous nuclei in the liquid which could operate at the temperature of growth. Constitutional supercooling could not have been greater than the supercooling of the initial melt, since the temperature rose as the freezing continued. walker -as also shown that a Ni-Cu alloy which can be undercooled to below its solidus will produce typical columnar and equiaxed regions when cast into a cold mold. This alloy could not reach a temperature below its solidus by constitutional supercooling. It could not, therefore, have nucleated heterogeneously. Neither the big-bang mechanism nor the Winegard-Chalmers mechanism can account for the fine grain

THE mine here described is in the Witbank district, a coal area of the Transvaal, about 100 miles north- east of Johannesburg. and is owned by the Witbank Colliery, Ltd. The plant has a capacity of 4000 tons per eight hours, and prepares five sizes of coal. The coal seam lies at a depth of about 200 ft. below the surface, and is reached by an inclined shaft sunk at an angle of 18° with the horizontal. Although the thickness of the coal seam varies from 10 to 14 ft. or more, only about a 7-ft. bench is mined. Mining is by the hord and pillar system. Bords are driven 18 ft. wide, with pillars measuring 18 ft. square. The mine is laid out into four sections, each sewed by a main haulage way from the shaft. Arc-wall machines are used for cutting the coal. but all loading is done by hand. Native labor is employed under the supervision of white miners, who do the required blasting. The workings are practically free from gas and water, and very little timber is needed.

Mineral fillers have been defined as inert materials that are included in a composition for some useful purpose. Because this definition and the scope of this review are not specific-indeed, exceptions abound-accurate total statistics are unavailable. One source estimates the total production in the United States in 1979 at 11.3 Mt (12.5 million st) valued at $534 million, averaging $49.19 per ton. Included are a broad group of minerals-asbestos, barite, bentonite, ground limestone and dolomite, clays, diatomite, feldspar, micas, silica, talc. Additional references will be made to synthetic mineral-derived fillers such as aluminum hydrate, precipitated calcium carbonate, and pyrogenic and precipitated silicas and silicates. A section on related uses at the end of this chapter covers absorbents and filters. Mineral fillers can be included in compounds to accomplish a variety of final results. Hardness, brittleness, impact strength, compressive strength, softening point, fire resistance, surface texture, electrical conductivity, and a host of other physical characteristics may be modified by the inclusion of fillers. These effects are the result of properties of the fillers, including chemical activity, hardness, particle size, shape and distribution, surface structure, color, density, and refractive index. To facilitate an overview of the mineral filler industry, this chapter will review the general usage of fillers, the inherent characteristics that intensify their utilization, and similarly their manufactured characteristics. Major using industries will then be examined in detail. Specific information on deposits and processing for industrial minerals will be found in the appropriate commodity chapter. All of these same minerals have additional significant uses based on their chemical composition or other characteristics. References will be found in other use chapters and summarized in commodity chapters. The chart in Table 1, updated from the 4th edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks, illustrates the major mineral fillers (both natural and manufactured) and their more important end uses. Use of Mineral Fillers Archaeologists have found that more than 5000 years ago, bitumen used for mortar and waterproofing contained mineral contaminants that acted as fillers. Since that time man has added mineral products to compounds to improve certain characteristics. Perhaps the most common objective of filler usage is reduction of cost of the end product. Certainly the inclusion of a filler that costs 2¢ per 0.45 kg (lb) will reduce the cost of a plastic product whose resin costs 50¢ per 0.45 kg (lb). But the decision to use a specific filler is not that simple. It may "soak up" binder, making a compound more viscous and perhaps preventing its flow into a mold as an injection molding compound, but similarly will give good anti-sag characteristics to putty, caulking compound, or undercoating. Fillers may be incorporated to modify: 1) Cost 2) Physical characteristics 3) Flow characteristics 4) Fire resistance 5) Density 6) Heat conductivity 7) Color or brightness and opacity 8) Hardness, brittleness, impact strength 9) Deformity, viscosity, softening point 10) Processing problems 11) Electrical conductivity 12) Surface texture 13) Thermal expansion characteristics 14) Abrasion resistance

THE copper-bearing sulphide ores from the mines in Butte, Mont., which are for the most part concentrated at the Boston & Montana duction Works in Great Falls and at the Washoe Reduction Works in Anaconda, contain the following minerals of economic value: Chalcocite, Cu2S; enargite, Cu3AsS4; cupriferous pyrite; bornite, Cu3FeS3; covellite, CUS; tetrahedrite, 4 CuS2Sb2S3; and tennantite, Cu8AsS7;. All of the ores carry a high percentage of pyrite. Many of the above sulphides are argentiferous and also carry from 10 to 20 cts. per ton in gold. The gangue is quartz and highly altered granite, with sphalerite and galena and more rarely barite and hubnerite as accessory minerals. An average chemical analysis of the second-class ore concentrated at Great Falls and Anaconda would be as follows: Copper 3.2 to 3.4 per cent. Silver 2. 3 to 3.0 oz. per ton. Gold 0.0-1 to 0.15 oz. per ton. Si02.. 55 to 60 per cent. FeO 12 to 15 per cent.. Sulphur 12 to 1.5 per cent. Al2O3, S to 10 per cent. CaO 0.5 to 0.8 percent. As203, 0.5 to 0.6 percent. Lead 0.2 to 0.3 percent. Before describing the Great Falls flow sleet as installed, at Anaconda, a brief history of the Great Falls concentrator will be given, including a description of the various concentrating machines and systems which have been tested in the search for a flow sheet which would give a higher recovery of copper.

A study was conducted to determine the influence of the surface on the yield point of fcc metals and high-purity iron. For the high-purity fcc metals, the yield Point produced by restraining a specimen may be eliminated by removing a sufficient amount of the layer. A yield point similar to that in fcc metals was found when iron specimens were pre-strained after a prior deformation. This yield point is not due to an aging effect but is associated with the surface layer. The yield points in age-hardenable aluminum alloy and those connected with "work softening" are not affected by a surface-removal treatment and are, therefore, caused by bulk-type dislocation reactions. The yield point which appears in previously strained fcc metals has been the subject of numerous studies. Several theories have been advanced to explain this "unloading-reloading" yield point. Cottrell and stokes,' from their study on the effect of temperature on plastic properties of high-purity aluminum, considered that it was the result of an avalanche "breakdown" of Lomer-Cottrell sessile dislocations. Haasen and Kelly2 extended this concept of dislocation-dislocation interaction to account for the yield point when unloading and reloading was carried out at the same temperature. On the other hand, strain aging was found to be responsible for the yield point in A1-Mg alloy by Westwood and Broom,3 and in aluminum alloys containing various amounts of alloying elements by Smallman, Williamson, and Ardley.4 In these cases, the yield point is considered to be associated with the locking of dislocations by impurity atoms. Birn-baum and filer5,6 and Takamura and muira7 reported that, when a high-purity copper specimen was prestrained, then held at a lower stress, and finally reloaded at the prestrain temperature, a larger yield point was observed. Such an increase was attributed to the locking of dislocations by point defects. In addition, Bolling8 suggested that both mechanisms, i.e., dislocation-dislocation interaction and strain aging, are responsible for the yield phenomenon, at least in a brass. Thus, there appears to be experimental evidence for both the strain aging and dislocation-dislocation interaction theories to explain the yield point in the fcc metals and alloys. In a previous article,9 one of the authors observed that, if sufficient amounts of metal were electrolti-cally removed after deformation of a high-purity aluminum single crystal, the yield point did not appear upon reloading. Continued pursuit in this area revealed that the effect of the surface on the yield-point phenomenon is not limited to one metal but affects a variety of metals of different lattice structures. Nor is the effect limited to the yield points produced by simple unloading-reloading at constant temperature; the surface exerts an important role on the yield point even when the temperature is changed at some stage during the test. It is the intent of the present article to give additional information regarding the effect of the surface on the yield-point phenomenon and to show the association between the yield point in both fcc and bcc metals and the existence of a heavy concentration of dislocation in the region near the surface of a deformed specimen.10 EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The single crystals used in this study had a nominal cross section of 0.125 by 0.125 in. and a 3-in. gage length and were prepared by a modified Bridgman technique. The initial purity for the metals was 99.997, 99.999, and 99.999 pct for aluminum, copper, and gold, respectively. Bar stock of these same materials was used in the preparation of the polycrystalline specimens of aluminum and copper. The iron specimens were machined from rods of "ferrovac", reported to have a purity of 99.98 pct. In addition, a precipitation-hardening aluminum alloy, containing 1.5 pct Cu, 2.5 pct Mg, and 5.5 pct Zn, was used. The polycrystalline specimens of iron, copper, and the aluminum alloy had a diameter of 0.17 in. and a gage length of 2 in. while the high-purity aluminum specimen had a nominal rec-

Strong's equation for calculating bottom-hole pressure reduction due to gas cutting of drilling mud is corrected, resulting in a simpler equation which is easier to use. Use of the equation is illustrated by examples. It is shown that reduction of weight of a 10 lb/gal mud by 50 per cent at the surface due to gas cutting produces only n 3 per cent decrease in hydrostatic head at the bottom of a 5,000-ft well. It is also shown that at the surface 5 volumes of air per volume of mud are required to reduce the apparent mud weight from 8.5 to 6.5 lh/gal in a 3,000-ft well. Illustrative graphs are included to show the effect of various degrees of gas cutting on apparent mud weight at depths of 2,000, .5,000 and 10,000 ft and to show variation of apparent mud weight, with depth for a 100 lb/cu ft (13.37 lb/gal) mud gas cut to 90 lb/cu ft (12.03 lb/gal) at the surface. INTRODUCTION In 1938, Strong' published the following equation for calculating reduction in bottom-hole pressure due to gas cutting of drilling mud h = 1/D [p + pn/100 In p + p(1-n/100)/p(1- n-100)] where: h = depth in feet P = pressure in atmospheres at depth h due to mud column only D = hydrostatic pressure in atmospheres of a col-umn of uncut mud 1 ft high p = back pressure at well-head (in atmospheres) n/100 = fraction by volume of gas in mud at well-head at back pres-sure p This equation was recently found to contain an error due to an incor-rect expression for variation of vol-ume fraction of gas with pressure. Values calculated by the original equation are close to the correct values for small percentages of gas for which it was derived but become increasingly erroneous as the gas content increases and are completely unusable at the very high gas con-tents employed in aerated mud. DERIVATION The nomenclature used is the same as in Strong's paper. The pres-sure dP exerted by a lamina of thickness dh at a depth h ft is ex-pressed by Eq. 1 where x = volume fraction of gas at depth h dP = D (l - x)dh . . . (1) When we express x in terms of the wellhead per cent gas n, the well-head pressure p and the pressure P at depth h, the result is Eq. 2. x = (np/p+p)/(100-n) + (np/P + p) When this is substituted in Eq. 1 and rearranged to separate the var-iables the result is dh = 1/D [dp + np/100-n dp/(P + p]. Integration between appropriate lim-its results in or if the wellhead is open so that p = 1 atm and we rearrange Eq. 4, the result is loss in head = hD — P = n/100-n In (P + 1) ...(5) Eq. 5 can be solved easily by successive approximation using hD as a first approximation for P on the right-hand side and calculating a first value for loss in head. This can then be used to get a new value of P using the left-hand side of the equation. Values converge very rap-idly even for quite large values of per cent by volume gas n. EXAMPLES The effect on bottom-hole pressure of 50 per cent gas cutting of the mud in a 5,000-ft well using 10 Ib/ gal mud will be calculated, we have: h = 5,000 ft 10 X 7.48 144 X 14.7 = 0.0353 atm/ft hD = 176.5 atm n = 50 Substituting these values in Eq. 5 and using hD as a first approxima-tion of P on the right, we have, approximate loss in head = 50/50 In (176.5 + 1) = 2.30 log 177.5 = 5.17 atm. IN 1949 an orebody containing some 10 billion lb of recoverable rare earth metals was discovered in the Mountain Pass district of San Bernardino County, California.' The following year Molybdenum Corp. of America purchased a number of claims at the deposit and a mill on the property which had been constructed to process the district's gold ores. Average composition of ore from the San Bernardino deposit is less than 0.1 pct Tho2, 25 to 35 pct calcite, 10 pct rare earth oxides, 15 to 20 pct silica, and 30 to 40 pct barite.' Rare earth content of the ore analyzes 50.7 pct CeO2, 4.2 pct Pr6O11, 11.7 pct Nd2O3;, 1.3 pct Sm2O3,, and 34.3 pct La2O3 and others.' By floating the barite and depressing the bastna-site, Molybdenum Corp. of America produced a concentrate that contained 60 to 70 pct rare earth oxides. More than 25 pct of the rare earths, however, was lost in flotation. It seemed likely that a more economical method could be found. At the present time most of the rare earths in the concentrates are converted to rare earth chlorides, which are either fed to ion exchange columns for separation of the individual rare earths or reduced to misch metal. Current investigation shows that solvent extraction may achieve this separation more economically than ion exchange. The study reported here was undertaken to develop an economical method of preparing a pure rare earth nitrate mixture from California bastnasite ore. Results indicated that more than 98 pct of the rare earths could be recovered. Several possibilities were considered for processing bastnasite ore, but only the method outlined in Fig. 1 was investigated. This involved leaching the calcined ore with nitric acid. The nitric acid process is discussed under the following headings: 1) calcination of the ore, 2) leaching of calcine, 3) filtration studies, 4) solvent extraction, and 5) nitric acid recovery. Calcination: Since California bastnasite ore contains 25 to 35 pct calcite and about 10 pct bastnasite, calcination was needed to reduce the violence of reaction with nitric acid. Weight losses of 26 to 30 pct were obtained by calcining the ore at 900°C for I hr or at 800°C for 4 hr. Longer periods resulted in no further weight loss. Leaching the Calcine: When the bastnasite calcine was leached with 30 pct nitric acid for 8 to 10 days, rare earth recoveries of only 45 to 50 pct were

THE purpose of this paper is to present the results of the application of the earth-resistivity method of subsurface investigation to the problem of locating seams of anthracite coal beneath a mantle of soil and subsoil. Details are given of the successful use of this method in locating the outcrops of anthracite seams in actual prospecting. The presence of the outcrop of an anthracite seam is indicated at points where electrical resistivity tests showed relatively low readings. The reason for, this is that in some localities the resistivity of anthracite was found to be about 0.0001 megohm-cm. compared to 1 to 200 megohm-cm. for shales and sandstones. For two reasons it is believed that the data sum-marized in this paper should be of particular interest. In the first place, most of the interpretations of the resistivity survey have been checked by subsequent drilling and some by the removal of the overburden and the exposing of the anthracite seams. It is infrequent that the oppor-tunity for checking results so thoroughly is given. In the second place, the fact that recent commentators 1.2.1 on the application of geophysical methods to mining have concluded that direct prospecting for anthracite and other types of coal is not promising makes the good results obtained more significant. So far as the authors can learn, the only previous experiment with electrical methods in the Pennsylvania anthracite field was one made by Sherwin F. Kelly in 1922, when he used the self-potential method at Wilkes-Barre4. The profile he made does not show a very marked correlation with the geologic cross section. Kelly points out that stray currents from electric motors in the mines undoubtedly affected his results, but the experience of the present authors with stray currents from mining machinery suggests the possibility that the potentials measured by Kelly were due almost entirely to this effect.

Identification and analysis of mining hazards involves the correlation of accident, injury and illness information from all segments of the mining industry. It would not be feasible to process the volume of data involved without substantial reliance upon a computerized information system similar to that maintained by the Health and Safety Analysis Center. Numerous statistical programs are applied to the computerized accident-injury-illness data base to identify those mining tasks and associated activities which are responsible for most of the injuries and occupational illnesses. These programs are used to flag those mining tasks or conditions at specific mines or segments of the mining industry where either a significant increase in the injury/illness trend has been reported or where the number of injuries/illnesses related to specific mining tasks or conditions are high. Upon identification of those mining hazards which warrant further analysis, a computerized search of the coded accident data is performed to correlate the predominant categories by cause of injury or illness, source of injury, nature of injury, type of accident, etc. From this correlation, those factors most common to the conditions responsible for the hazard may be identified. Based upon analyses of this form, recommendations are made regarding the appropriate engineering, training, and/or operational improvements necessary to alleviate the hazard. In addition to mining hazard analysis, the computerized data base also has application in the area of optimum resource allocation. Computer programs have been developed to assist management in allocating resources based upon organizational requirements and historical accident - injury trends.

IN ATTEMPTING to summarize briefly the reconstruction of the Hecla plant since the fire, three important facts must be held in mind; namely: a hurry-up job with the shadow of an insurance company in the background; restriction of working space in the narrow Burke Canyon; and building two-thirds of the plant on a filled area. Construction work was carried on without interruption through the winter season. These adverse conditions have contributed many obstacles not ordinarily encountered in mining work. The first problems immediately after the fire were organization and policy; the-former to create an efficient construction crew out of a mining organization; the latter to determine the type and extent of surface plant to be built. The new crew was organized from a nucleus of mine employees, 25 per cent. of the old crew remaining for construction work. Permanent fireproof buildings were decided upon, the general arrangement of the new plant to be similar to the old one as far as possible, at the same time enlarging it 100 per cent. in anticipation of the demands which would be made upon it when the Star Mine began operating. Cleaning up the wreckage was a big job, the extent of which is indicated by the fact that 30 carloads of scrap iron and steel were moved off the property. In re-establishing transportation facilities at the plant, a previous disadvantage of a steep grade on the high line was obviated by excavating 1600 yd. of solid rock; the fire having destroyed all town buildings below, made this work possible.
