The Bathurst mining district is located near the town of Bathurst on the north shore of the province of New Brunswick in eastern Canada. This region is the northeasterly extension of the Appalachian mountain system. The area is heavily forested and covered with a fairly uniform layer of glacial gravels and boulder clay. The relief is low, increasing to a few hundred feet in the north west and several hundred feet in the extreme southwest. Thus, rock outcrops are scarce and occur mostly along streams and ridges. These factors made conventional prospecting difficult and resulted in the district becoming an excellent place for the application of regional geological studies, air photo techniques, airborne and gound geophysical methods and soil sampling. Late in 1952, The Brunswick Mining and Smelting Company discovered a very large base metal sulphide body presently known as their No. 6 orebody. Early in 1953, another and even larger sulphide body was discovered and is known as the No. 12 ore body. Mining exploration was very active thoughout 1953 and in 1954, The American Metal Company discovered the orebodies which have been developed into The Heath Steele 'Mines. The location of these deposits is shown on figure one. In the latter part of 1954, The Anaconda Company became interested in the district and decided to make a geological study of this new and promising base rrietal area. The following paper presents the story of the application of modern geological and geophysical techniques, leading to the discovery of a large sul-nhidp liodv. The Bathurst district is generally underlain by the Tetagouche group of Middle Ordovician rocks.

Pulverized Fuel Combustion The apparatus shown in the illustration is a complete equipment f r supplying coal to boiler and metallurgical furnaces, cement and lime kilns, dryers, and to all furnaces requiring a temperature and quality of fame under prompt and easy control. It is claimed that the Aero Pulverizer makes practicable the highest efficiency obtainable from burning coal. It makes coal burn like a gas, a flame, the physical and chemical character of which is regulable- a flame that may be elongated or shortened, thus placing the zone of highest temperature where needed- a flame that may be made oxidizing, reducing, or neutral, as occasion may require. The coal is burned as pulverized, and there is no storage of the powder with its attendant hazard. Artificial drying before pulverizing is not necessary if the coal supply be sheltered from rain and snow. Where the Aero is used, it is wholly a furnace question whether a dryer should be installed; it is not at all a pulverizing or storage question. Labor is reduced to a minimum. Slack coal at low cost yields its last B.T.U.

The graphitic carbon content of soils may be used to detect and delimit subsurface graphitic zones. Spectrographic measurement of carbon in C horizon soils from several areas in the northeastern United States shows good correlation with known graphitic bodies. Bodies of graphite and sulfides are readily located by electromagnetic prospecting methods, but these methods cannot generally discriminate between them. Usual practice, therefore, requires follow-up work on electrically anomalous areas by trenching, drilling, or soil sampling in order to determine the mineralogical nature of the conductor. The efficiency and cost of such follow-up is consequently an important factor in prospecting. The presence of buried sulfide deposits is often reflected in concentrations of metals in the superincumbent soil. Simple chemical tests for such metal concentrations have been developed and applied with considerable success. Bodies of graphite or mixtures of graphite and sulfides are, however, very common and a means whereby buried graphite could be detected by soil testing should provide valuable additional information in the search for ore sulfide and graphite deposits. Graphite is a notably stable substance and should persist in soil above graphite-rich horizons. Microscopic examination of soil samples high in carbon, however, failed to reveal any recognizable graphite fragments indicating a grain size in the clay range. Presumably such small particles would have some mobility in a soil by a translocation mechanism similar to that proposed for the movement of clay particles in a soil profile. Experimental data supports this idea since the boundary between background and anomalous soils carbon values is quite sharp, but the anomalous zone is slightly broader than the graphitic source rock. A simple spectrochemical technique for the determination of carbon in geological materials has been described by Dennen,1 and may be directly applied to soils. A modification of this technique which employs an arcing chamber through which nitrogen is passed is recommended to decrease contributions from atmospheric carbon dioxide. Tests indicate that soils over graphitic zones may be strongly enriched in carbon. The spectrochemical determination of carbon depends upon the formation of the cyanogen molecule (CN) from carbon in a sample and atmospheric nitrogen, under the high temperatures associated with a dc arc. Samples for analysis are dried, lumps broken, and screened. A small portion of the -100 mesh fraction is packed into a copper electrode and excited as the cathode of a dc arc. The band spectra of cyanogen are recorded photographically and the density of the bandhead CN 3883A is measured. The limit of detection of the method is about 0.01 pct C and its coefficient of variation is about 15 pct. Soils, of course, contain carbon in other forms than graphite, and the amount of interference from such sources was examined. The C horizon of several soils from Massachusetts, Maine, and Pennsylvania were found to have a carbon content of 0.3 to 0.5 pct by weight. This content is chiefly due to the presence of carbonates and vegetable matter in the sample and may be readily eliminated, or at least

THE Juniper Prospect is in Carleton County, N. B., at approximately 46" 31' north latitude, 67" 20' west longitude. During the summer of 1955 an area in west-central New Brunswick was selected for aerial electromagnetic prospecting with American Metal Co.'s helicopter-mounted equipment. Generalized, small-scale government geologic maps had suggested that this area was located along the western border of the northeast-trending granitic backbone of northwestern New Brunswick and might be underlain by the Ordovician-Silurian sediments and volcanics that are the host rocks for the recently discovered sul-fide deposits of the Bathurst-Newcastle district. The helicopter electromagnetic equipment located an anomalous conductive area, coincident with a small aeromagnetic closure, about five miles west of the town of Juniper. Subsequently 30 mining claims (total area about 6600 x 8000 ft) were staked and company personnel conducted geological, geophysical, and geochemical investigations on the property. The claims and immediately contiguous areas were mapped geologically, and an area of about 2000 x 4000 ft was soil-sampled and also surveyed by ground electromagnetic and gravity methods. Finally six diamond drillholes, totaling 3500 ft in length, were drilled to test the anomalous conditions discovered by the several exploration techniques used. The discovery of base metal sulfides during drilling was a technical success for the exploration methods, but the quantity of sulfides was too small to be profitably exploited.

Uranium ore deposits in the Lisbon Valley area are in an arcuate belt, 15 miles long by one-half-mile wide, on the southwest flank of the Lisbon Valley anticline. They range in size from 500 to 1,500,000 tons and by mid-1965 had yielded 6,147,000 tons containing 48,530,000 pounds of U3O8. Ore bodies average 6 feet thick, are tabular, amoeba-shaped masses, concordant to the bedding, and are in the thickest, lowest sandstone unit of the Moss Back Member of the Chinle Formation of Triassic age. The host rock is predominantly a fluviatile, calcareous, fine-grained to conglomeratic sandstone. Uraninite, the principal ore mineral, fills the pores in the sandstone and partly replaces sand grains and fossil wood fragments. During Late Permian and Early Triassic time pre-Chinle Formations were arched to form the ancestral Permian anticline. Moss Back streams truncated Moenkopi and Cutler beds which capped the ancestral anticline and then covered it with fluviatile elastics, which were subsequently covered by thousands of feet of Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous sediments. Uranium, probably derived from the Chinle Formation by diagenetic processes, was transported in connate ground waters, was moved by compaction or hydrostatic forces, and was deposited under reducing conditions. Uranium was emplaced around the crest of the ancestral anticline, prior to the Laramide orogeny. During the orogeny, the Tertiary-Lisbon valley anticline was super induced on the Permian anticline and, penecontemporaneous with uplift, was faulted parallel to its longitudinal axis. The Big Indian ore belt on the southwest flank footwall block was elevated to approximately its present position, and the northeast flank hanging wall block was elevated only slightly. An extension of the Big Indian ore belt around the northeast flank of the ancestral Permian anticline may exist in the Moss Back sandstone in the downthrown block northeast of the Lisbon Valley fault.

Mr. Morton and I have changed the order of the questions. Instead of what is now first, we have put No. 3 first, progress on basic-roof construction, inasmuch as we feel that it is quite important. At this time, H. S. Robertson, of Harbison-Walker, is going to give you a short talk, with slides, on what has been done to date on this subject.

Since 1935 California has enjoyed a remarkable cycle of discovery, which has placed the state in a very satisfactory position in regard to oil reserves. Most ol the geophysical plays have been drilled and it is possible that new discoveries must be made by the application of careful geologic and stratigraphic studies. During 1940 only one new field was discovered, which, although not of major importance, may lead to additional discoveries. During the year, 113 wildcats were drilled. New discoveries, extensions and a reappraisal of discoveries made in 1939 will not approximate over 50,000,000 bbl., as against an estimated withdrawal during the year of 224,000,000 barrels. Demand in terms of crude for 1940 was 632,000 bbl. per day as against 626,000 bbl. per day for 1939. Demand for gasoline was the same as in 1939, but the demand lor fuel oil increased 3.8 per cent. Compared with 1939, Japanese shipments decreased from 75,786 bbl, per day to 61,000 bbl. per day, but the balance of Pacific foreign shipments increased from 59,409 bbl. per day to 61,304. Total with-drawals from storage during the year will approximate 7,000,000 bbl., almost all of which is fuel oil. Drilling activity was slightly greater than in 1939 and accounted for 890 new producing wells as against 851 for 1939 (Table 3). Production averaged 611,900 bbl. per day as compared with 614.,842 bbl. per day for 1939. The productive acreage figure of the state was increased by 4000 through discoveries and extensions. New Discoveries Los Angeles Basin District Del Vdle Field.—Northwest of Newhall, where the first oil well in California was drilled, R. E. Havenstrite completed his Lincoln No. I well, flowing 390 bbl. of 50" gravity oil together with 7000 M CU. ft. of gas. Later the well was recompleted, after cutting off the gas, for 950 bbl. of 34" gravity oil. The type of structure from which this production is coming is a plunging anticline, complicated by faulting. The Lincoln No. I well uncovered approximately 180 ft. of net sand. This field contains a gas cap and its indicated productive area approximates 500 acres. An intensive wildcat drilling campaign is expected during this coming year in the district in the vicinity of the Del Valle field. Extensions and Deeper Sand Developments Los Ange1es Basin District Athens Field.—On the northwest plunge of the Athens structure, the Thorley Oil Co. completed its No. 12-1 well, flowing 250 bbl. of 3 2" gravity oil from a depth of 8097 ft. The area in which the well is located is complicated by faulting and it is impossible at this date to determine the importance of this deep-zone discovery.

INTRODUCTION. THE predominating value of the ores now being treated by the Palmarejo and Mexican Gold Fields, Ltd., is silver, although some gold is also carried. The present method of treatment consists of wet-crushing and concentrating, followed by the cyanidation of the unroasted sands and slimes. The sands are treated by leaching and the so-called accumulated slimes by a system of agitation and decantation. It is only within very recent years that the cyanidation of unroasted silver-ores has been commercially successful. In fact, at the time operations were begun at the cyanide-plant at Chinipas, February, 1902, I knew of no other leaching-plant treating similar ores successfully. The cyanide treatment of the Palmarejo ores differs but little from the ordinary practice in cyaniding gold-ores; and perhaps but little, if any, new information concerning the metallurgy of silver is to be gleaned from it. PALMAREJO MINE. The Palmarejo mines are located in the southwestern part of the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, on the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains, at an elevation of 3,200 feet. The mills, 12. miles distant, are situated on the Chinipas river, near the town of Chinipas, which is about 150 miles northeast of Agiabampo, on the Gulf of California. Supplies are shipped via this port as this route is the best and most direct to the property. The ore-bodies in the Palmarejo mines have been deposited. along a series of rock-fractures, caused by an intrusion of eruptive rock. The most important of these fractures or fissures, both in width and value, are the Prieta and Blanca veins, which.

IN previous metallographic work on titanium and its alloys, difficulty has been encountered in distinguishing spheroidal particles of titanium hydride, dispersed in a-titanium, from other phases that may be present, such as p-titanium. This problem is common in examination of commercial unalloyed titanium.' In the course of an investigation of the Ti-H phase diagram, it was noted that titanium hydride, dispersed in a matrix of a-titanium, showed strong optical anisotropy when examined under polarized light. With sensitive tint illumination, particles of the hydride, when the stage is rotated, changed from bright yellow to bright blue in color. Since P-titanium is cubic, it showed no color change on rotation, remaining dark gray or blue-gray. Although a-titanium is hexagonal, it showed only a minor color change, going from pale pinkish-blue to pale purplish-blue. These colors could be modified somewhat by adjustment of the illumination. They were observed in specimens mechanically polished, both without etching and after etching with hydrofluoric acid-nitric acid mixtures in either water or glycerine. The strong color change of the hydride seems to offer a simple method for its metallographic identification. Optical anisotropy of titanium hydride is inconsistent with its accepted face-centered-cubic structure.' Samples of iodide titanium containing 6 to 40 atomic pct deuterium were prepared for diffraction studies. After deuterating and slow cooling' the samples were held 21 % hr at 400 °C, water quenched, held 61 hr at 100°C and quenched, then held 64% hr at 255 C and quenched. Debye ex-posures with MoKa X-rays and 1.111A neutrons were made at room temperature of samples as-deuterated and after the 100" and 255°C treatments. Table I shows the lines observed, in addition to those attributable to a-titanium. These data show that the hydride phase was not cubic, but probably tetragonal. The titanium atoms appeared to form a body-centered-tetragonal lattice complex, two titanium atoms per cell, with approximate dimensions: a = 3.12A, c = 4.18A, and c/a =1.34A. This is equivalent to a face-centered-tetragonal complex, four titanium atoms per cell, with approximate dimensions: a = 4.42A, c = 4.18A, and c/a - 0.946A. The presence of the 2.98 and 1.81A neutron lines indicates that the true Bravais lattice is not identical with this lattice complex, but may be primitive tetragonal with dimensions some multiple of those of the complex. The relative intensities of the hydride and a-titanium X-ray lines as functions of overall composition indicated that the hydride, presumably in equilibrium with the a at 100" to 255"C, contained more than 62 atomic pct H. Battelle Memorial Institute participated in a program for the General Services Administration aimed at developing a nickel-cobalt separation process that could be integrated in the Nicaro nickel plant. At the time the programwas being carried out, the Nicaro process was a straight-through operation, in which the ore was reduced and leached, after which the pregnant solution was boiled to produce a so-called "bulk precipitate" which contained virtually all of the nickel and cobalt which had been dissolved in the leaching step. The weight ratio of nickel to cobalt in Nicaro ore is approximately 15 to 20:l. The weight ratio of nickel to cobalt in the finished product had to be 100:l or higher to meet specifications. Because the Nicaro process embodied no nickel-cobalt separation step, the only way that a bulk precipitate of the specified nicke1:cobalt ratio could be produced was to so adjust roasting and leaching conditions that nickel would be selectively leached and most of the cobalt would be rejected with the tailings. The required selectivity, however, was achieved at the expense of nickel recovery, which was 5 or more per cent less than might have been obtained with the existing equipment, utilities, man power, etc., had selectivity been no object. The over-all purpose of the program was to develop a separation step that could be fitted into or onto the Nicaro facilities and which would permit the manufacture of a product that would meet the desired specifications and still permit the recovery of a maximum amount of nickel. Battelle suggested that this might be accomplished by reprocessing off-specification bulk precipitate and specifically suggested the process based on ammonium sulphate leaching followed by hydrogen reduction of the leach solution according to techniques developed commercially by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited. Such a process would not only satisfy the objectives of the research but would present two additional advantages. (1) It would produce a separate cobalt product which could be further processed into metal, alloys, oxides, or salts. (2) It would yield nickel in metallic form which might be more generally marketable and command a slightly higher price per unit of nickel than the Nicaro oxide product. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCESS Figure 1 is a flowsheet of the process. The essential features are: (1) Extraction of about 97 per cent of the nickel and about 85 per cent of the cobalt from bulk precipitate by a principal leach with ainmonium sulphate solution (Step A). A method of measuring the degree of contact between grains of 1 phase in multiphase alloys is derived. It is shown that the number and the areas of contacts between grains can be determined by metallographic analysis. Relations between the area of contact, the dihedral angle, and the mean free path of spherical grains are developed. It is often desirable to interpret the mechanical behavior of alloys in terms of structural features observed under the microscope. A quantitative description of microstructures of multi-phase alloys requires consideration of geometrical and topological factors such as the amount, size, and shape of grains and the continuity of the constituent phases. The number and dimensions of grains may be metallographically determined by applying the methods described by Smith and Guttman1 and by Fullman2 in their papers on the measurement of particle size and internal boundaries in opaque bodies. The present work intends to show that the same methods can be used to evaluate some of the parameters of phase continuity; namely, contiguity, number of contacts, and areas of contact of grains of 1 phase. Application of these concepts may be found in such problems as the calculation of electrical conductivity of 2-phase alloys, or the evaluation of the length of fracture path through grains of a brittle phase more or less dispersed in a matrix. I. DEFINITION The following definitions and derivations are based on 2-phase alloys, of which the units of the microstructure are grains. Contiguity is defined as the average fraction of surface area shared by 1 grain of a phase with all neighboring grains of the same phase. In a 2-phase alloy of constituents A and B, the contiguity of phase B is given by: where Cb is the contiguity of phase B aBß is the average area of contact between a grain of phase B and adjacent grains of phase B, aAB is the average area of contact between a grain of phase B and adjacent grains of phase A. The contiguity is a measure of the average degree of contact between grains of phase B in the 2-phase mixture. The ratio varies from 0 to 1 as the distribution of phase B changes from a completely dispersed to a fully agglomerated structure. Smith and Guttman1 have shown that the relative areas of 2 kinds of interfaces in a volume are directly proportional to the number of interfaces of each type intersected by a random line. The lines can be drawn on metallographically prepared surfaces as long as these are random sections through the sample. The contiguity ratio of phase B then becomes: Cb = 2NBB/NAB + 2N BB [2] where: NBB is the number of interfaces between grains of phase B intersected per unit length of random line. Nab is the number of interfaces between grains of phase B and grains of phase A intersected per unit length of random line. The factor 2 arises in Eq. [2] because each interface B-B is associated with 2 grains of B-phase, whereas the interface A-B involves only 1 grain of B-phase. The calculations of contiguity do not require any assumption as to volume fraction, particle size, or particle shape. Fullman2 gives an expression for the determination of the mean free path between particles. The mean free path PB between grains of phase A, i.e., through grains or agglomerates of phase B, may be found from the relationship: PB =2fB/NAB [3] where fB is the volume fraction of phase B. The calculation of the mean free path is independent of grain shape and grain size distribution. The calculation of the number of contacts and of contact area requires assumptions of grain shape, grain size, and contact shape. In the case of uni-

Although water will displace oil from a petroleum reservoir to a greater extent than gas will, there are some reservoirs in which gas rather than water should be used for pressure maintenance. This is indicated by the high-percentage oil recovery in the case history reports on the Pickton field1 in East Texas and the Raleigh field2 in Mississippi. In gas cycling, total oil recovery includes vaporized products from the immobile oil in addition to oil produced by displacement. If a large part of the immobile oil is vaporized, total oil recovery may be higher than that obtainable from pressure maintenance by water injection. However, the amount of immobile oil vaporized may range from almost 0 to 100 percent, and no simple and reliable method has been presented in the literature for calculating oil vaporization. Development of such a method was the purpose of this study. Several papers concerning the calculation of oil vaporization have been published,3 6 and each is based on the concept dealing with K values — equilibrium constants for the various components in reservoir oils. (K for a component in a system of vapor and liquid in equilibrium is the mole fraction in the vapor phase divided by the mole fraction in the liquid phase.) This appears to be the most logical approach. Yet, the problem is too great for a perfect solution, even with modem laboratories to analyze oils and high-speed digital computers to perform calculations; the number of components in reservoir oils is too large. Because of their complexity no two reservoir oils are exactly alike. Also, K values change not only with variations in pressure and temperature but also with composition of the reservoir oil. In addition, during gas cycling, the lighter hydrocarbons tend to vaporize first. Thus, the reservoir oil becomes more dense and less volatile as gas cycling continues. Furthermore, the greatest amount of oil vaporization occurs near the injection well. Therefore, a simplified method is required for calculating oil vaporization because a rigorous method is not practical. The present methods of calculating vaporization generally require knowledge of the reservoir oil composition in which the mole fractions of the lighter components through hexanes are given; the remaining oil is described as C, + (heptanes and others of greater molecular weights). Assigning one K value for the C,+ system provides the simplest solution, but this incorrectly assumes that K for C, + does not change as gas cycling continues. This assumption can cause large errors because the K value may become less than a thousandth of the original after a large amount of oil vaporization. Another way to solve the problem is to determine changing K values for C, + according to how much of the C, + has been vaporized. To determine these values a sample of the reservoir oil is injected into a pressure-volume cell, and dry gas is batched in and out of the cell. MAINTENANCE of membership by the technical so¬cieties and the activity of these societies in spite of the adverse business situation have been noteworthy. This forcibly brings home the fact that industry recognizes that sound technical guidance is well worth its cost. The numerous difficulties and losses due to defects of various kinds arising from gas-metal reactions are now generally recognized and interest in these problems is widespread. The forthcoming A. I. M. E. round-table discussion of gas-metal problems will do much to clarify the situation and will permit us to assay our present knowledge and to suggest the proper direction for profitable future research. "The Age Hardening of Metal" was the title of the annual I. M. D. lecture delivered by Dr. Paul D. Merica. A critical review of the known facts relating to age-hardening phenomena was first given, followed by the presentation of a theory correlating the detailed observations which have been made regarding the mechanism of the hardening.

IN common with many other companies engaged in the mining and processing of ores, research has always been an important activity of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company. Much of this research has been carried on at the various plants of the Company by the operating staffs, and over the years has been an essential factor in developing new methods and improving existing methods of operation. In 1917 arrangements were made with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under which the Company had the exclusive use of one or two small laboratories in the then newly constructed MIT buildings and the use of the metallurgical laboratories, subject of course to the Institute's needs. After about two years this work was temporarily discontinued but was resumed in 1920 under the direction of G. H. Clevenger, consulting metallurgist for the Company, who recently retired. Becoming cramped for space, the laboratory was moved to a location near MIT on Amherst Street, Cambridge, in 1924. Establishment of a general research laboratory in metropolitan Boston naturally followed from the fact that the head office of the Company was located there and that the library facilities available for all types of research were, and are, unsurpassed. The disadvantages in carrying on research at great distances from the operating units of the Company were always apparent, but with widely scattered plants this disadvantage could not he overcome. WHEN we want to interpret some problem which faces us at the present, if that problem be a social or political movement, we turn to the pages of history for 'information. If the problem be one of science or of industry we turn to the library of the subject and endeavor to translate the present from the experience of the past. I wonder if you would bear with me for a few minutes as I look back to the time when I was going through mining school and looking forward with hope, it is true and with confidence also, but still with some trepidation and an occasional qualm, to the month of June when the class of 1897 would be hunting jobs. Those were the years 1893 to 1897. Those years saw the Treasury of the United States so empty of gold that the President had to appeal to financiers to accept the country's promises to pay in return for $100,000,000 in gold. And the invectives that were hurled at both their heads for such a betrayal of the people sound strangely similar to those you read today being daily written and screamed at another President for taking us into the League of Nations or for not issuing bonds in huge amounts for unemployment relief, or for not adopting somebody else's particular specific for the relief of hard times.
