On the preceding pages, operations of the four major producers of nickel today have been described. There are, however, other operations in the world that, while not as large, are still of importance to the over-all picture of the industry. Among these are the Finnish producer, Outokumpu Oy, a state-controlled company that operates the Kotlahti mine 200 miles northeast of Helsinki. The ore from this operation, which began production in 1959, is pentlandite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite, occurring as disseminations in the host rock and in breccias. The flowsheet of the 1500-tpd mill at Kotlahti follows standard practices of crushing, grinding, and flotation to produce a pentlandite-pyrrhotite concentrate and a copper concentrate, both of which are shipped to the smelter at Harjavalta.

HE Tonopah Extension property consisted originally of three claims, with an area of 38 acres. In 1902 a shaft, now known as No. 1, was started near the eastern end of the property, close to the Tonopah Mining Co.'s boundary line, in the. andesite cap rock' which covers the ore-bearing formations in the western end of the Tonopah district. A short distance below the 60-ft. level, the orebodies pinched out, although the veins continued. This shaft has not been used since 1916. Before 1910, the production was small, coming mostly from small shoots of high-grade shipping ore. In that : year, the, company started its 30-stamp mill and cyanide plant; the mill was later enlarged to 50 stamps, with a corresponding increase in the cyanide-plant capacity, which brought the capacity of the mill up to 350 .tons per day. The total production of the mine to Oct. 1, 1920, is 871,177 tons of ore, from which was recovered 15,267,216 oz. of silver and 156,241 oz. of gold.' This makes an average recovery per ton of 17.5 oz. silver and 0.179 oz. gold. The average price received for silver since' the beginning of operations is 65.87 c. per oz., and the average value recovered from the ore-'is $15.25. The area of the property has been gradually increased by purchases and consolidations of adjoining ground until it is now 647 acres. A new shaft, known as No. 2, was started in 1912, 1600 ft. west .of No. 1, and in the following year a crosscut on the 750-ft. level of this shaft resulted in the discovery of the. PROFESSOR RUFF'S most illuminating paper' describing his extremely valuable investigation of the carbon-iron equilibrium diagram assigns definite temperatures to certain very important lines in the diagram, viz.: the eutectic temperature EB (Fig. 1) and the " near-eutectic " temperature E'B', but without indicating clearly enough the reasoning which warrants these assignments. These temperatures are of such primary importance that it is well to indicate the apparent gaps in the reasoning, in the hope that they may be filled in. In his diagram, Fig. 1, the point X and the lines B'D'HI represent the experimental results reached by Ruff and Goecke; 2 AB, AEB, and SE represent the liquidus, the solidus, and the solubility of the carbon in solid austenite in the absence of graphite according to Gutowsky,3 AB being also in accordance with Spiecker's data;4 ,S'E' the solubility of carbon in solid austenite in the presence of graphite according to Ruer and Iljin; 5 GS the line A3 after Goerens and Meyer;6 I and EBC the true eutectic line as inferred by Prof. Ruff from Gutowsky's data. B'D' is the carbon content found in cast-iron which had apparently saturated itself with carbon in the presence of the graphite of the enclosing graphite crucibles in which the determinations were made. The first Diesel-electric locomotives for the Mesabi iron range of the Lake Superior district were put into service last summer by the Oliver Iron Mining Co., U. S. Steel subsidiary. There were ten of these locomotives, rated 1000 hp. and weighing 125 tons each. They are designed for service from 16 to 24 hours per day to haul trains of loaded ore cars from open-pit mines, 200 to 400 ft. deep, on a two to eight-mile haul to the top of the pit. The locomotives push or pull the trains over switchbacks and up heavy grades with 5 per cent maximum against the load. High tractive effort, less smoke, and ability to negotiate sharp curves were among the reasons for the selection of Diesel-electric locomotives.

ROCK is no doubt the most abundant of all material things because the planet on which we live is made of it. All animal and vegetable organisms and the multitude of natural and manufactured products that occupy a comparatively insignificant film on the outer surface of the planet are derived from rock. Processes of Nature acting for untold centuries have transformed rock into soil, making possible the development of vegetable and annual life; and rocks have supplied the numerous raw materials, metallic and nonmetallic, wherewith the innumerable appurtenances of a complex civilization have been fabricated. As time goes on we live with increasing speed and with enlarged desires. Time and space are shortened by man's ingenuity, and products for human use must be manufactured with greater and greater celerity. It was inevitable that Nature's slow processes of rock alteration should fail to keep pace with human demands and that the variety of natural products should fall far short of the requirements of an industrial age. Man therefore supplemented these processes by attacking rock in its native bed amid using it to supply needs not otherwise satisfied.

By combining the skills of the physicist with those of a chemist, the identification of minerals has become an exact science and the presence of even minute traces of impurities and extraneous elements is readily revealed by spectrographic means, Granted that we can learn all there is to know about the composition of a substance and even about its physical propertied (which latter assumption is somewhat far-reaching) it still does not follow that we clearly understood its commercial designation or utility.

ORDINARILY age-hardening is thought of as being associated with a limited solubility of one metal in another. Much less has been written about the type of age-hardening that attends the formation of superstructures. Solid solutions generally have a disordered or random arrangement of atoms; that is to say, in a unit cell, such as that of the face-centered cubic lattice, there is no distinction between atomic sites. Atoms of a given metal may occupy cube corners or face centers. Under certain conditions, however, some alloys develop what is known as an ordered structure. In this case, cube corners would be occupied by only one type of atom and face centers by another type, Associated with this ordering process are many interesting changes in physical and electrical properties. Moreover, in many instances the alloys become susceptible to age-hardening. From the evidence now to be described, it appears that age-hardening in 14-carat gold alloys is due to the formation of both a super-structure and a precipitate. Alloys of the metals gold, silver and copper were known in antiquity. The available knowledge regarding their constitution has been ably summarized and extended by Sterner-Rainer,1 Janecke,2 Carter,3 Wise,4 and Coleman.5 Despite the long familiarity with these alloys and the numerous investigations of their properties that have been made, there is still much that remains unexplained. It has been known for a long time that the hardness of these alloys is closely related to the rate of cooling, Similar changes have been observed in the binary gold-copper system,6 one alloy of which corresponding to the formula Cu3Au, has been the subject of a careful and competent report by the English investigators, Sykes and Evans.7 They have established the fact that the shift of atoms from the ordered to the disordered condition takes place in some critical temperature range. At temperatures above the critical range the structure is random, and at temperatures below it the structure is ordered. No difference between these two structures is revealed by the microscope. Both have a face-centered cubic lattice and complete solubility, so that there is no evidence to suggest that the changes in properties are associated with a phase change, The more slowly the alloy is cooled, the higher is the degree to which the ordering process proceeds and the more marked is the increase in hardness. As experimental data were accumulated on 14-carat gold alloys, several contradictions arose. Certain observations tended to confirm the existence of a superstructure, while other observations seemed to be inconsistent with such a transformation. DR . JOHN A . CHURCH, in his treatise on the Comstock Locle 1 gave a full and clear account of the conditions of the mine during the period of greatest activity. The difficulties in the way of deep mining at that time were excessive water and high temperature. The drainage of the mines taxed the financial resources of the mining companies, and the high temperatures restricted the capacity of the miners for underground labor. In spite of these difficulties exploratory work was continued until the financial burden of removing the water became too great. The companies then restricted the work to the upper levels. The years 1883 to 1886 marked the period of cessation of deep mining. For 12 years thereafter mining was confined to the levels above the Sutro tunnel; and, while the question of drainage was more or less agitated, nothing of importance was done until the formation of the Comstock Pumping Association in 1898. Since that time successive levels have been drained until, at present, on the north-end mines, a depth of 700 ft. below the Sutro-tunnel level has been reached. Mining is now carried on in the Ophir mine from the 1,700- to the 2,200-ft. levels, and a winze is being sunk to make connection with the 2,300-ft. level (the 2,450 ft. of the C. & C. shaft). In 1903-the Ward Shaft Association was formed to undertake the draining of the Central and Gold Hill group of mines, and at the present time a depth of 2,500 ft. has been reached in the Ward shaft. The situation at the Ward looks promis¬ing, and the 3,000-ft. level may be reached in the near future. It is proposed to establish a large pumping-station on this level, and then begin the opening of known ore-bodies and the prospecting for new ones. The main factors which have contributed to the successful solution of the drainage problem are the Sutro tunnel, the use of the hydraulic elevator as a sinking-pump, the concentration of pumping-units, and cheap electrical power. The question of high temperature and its control still remains as a minor but important problem. The temperatures encountered in the new workings are as great as those in the earlier periods. The Comstock was considered the hottest group of mines in the world, and I am not aware of similar conditions in any other mining-district. A water-temperature as high as 160° F. has been reported from the Ward shaft, and temperatures below the Sutro tunnel are very high in many instances.

THE twenty-second annual meeting of the Canadian Mining Institute was held at the King Edward Hotel, Toronto, on Mar. 8, 9, and 10, and was followed on the 11th by an all-day excursion to the International Nickel Refinery at Port Colborne. The meeting was very well attended and dealt with some of the most important matters, both technical and economic, that have ever come before the Canadian Institute. The question of licensing engineers is before the Canadian members as it is before our own in this country and the attitude of the mining engineers across the border is like that of the American mining engineers, opposed to the licensing of the mining. engineer, however they may feel toward the licensing of other branches of the engineering profession. It was well pointed out that such a law, had it been in existence in the last decade or two, would probably have prevented the rapid development of Canada's mines. Whereas one civil engineer can run a line of survey as well as another, perhaps, it is only a question in his case of whether he can or cannot survey. In the case of a mining engineer employed by a man with capital to invest in a development project, unless the man with the money has confidence in the judgment of his engineer the fact that he is a professional man would carry little weight in inducing a large investment toward the development of Canada's resources. It was also pointed out that although the Institute as a whole had not passed on the matter, it would probably be opposed to legislation aiming only for self-interest, but would be heartily in accord with legislation which could be shown to be for the service of the community at large.

H. H. Hausner (Sylvania Electric Products Inc., Bayside, N. Y.)—I tested the 18-8 stainless steel powder described by Grobe and Roberts and the results were excellent. The powder was compacted and sintered in purified hydrogen to a very low density (approximately 20 pct and more porosity). Where the other powders show very little ductility when sintered to such a low density, the described stainless steel was surprisingly high in ductility. I would appreciate it if the authors could give us some data on a similar powder but without silicon and also data on 430 stainless steel powder. H. S. Kalish (Sylvania Electric Products lnc., Bay-side, N. Y.)—I should like to verify the excellent results obtained by Grobe and Roberts with their pre-alloyed stainless steel powder. It seems to me, however, that their data are conservative and that even better densities and higher tensile strength can be obtained with these powders by the selection of proper particle size fractions. The accompanying data were obtained by sintering compacts pressed from the powder made by Vanadium-Alloys Steel Co. to 0.8 in. in diam about % in. high in a cylindrical double action die without the use of lubricant. The compacts were sintered for 1 hr at 2370°F in hydrogen purified by passing it through a Deoxo unit (palladium catalyst) and a Lectrodryer. Even the density obtained using the as-received (—100 mesh) compacted at 40 tsi was quite high as was the hardness. This indicates that by increasing the sintering temperature slightly above 2350°F the coining and subsequent secondary sintering operation can be avoided. With the — 325 mesh fraction, however, very much higher density can be obtained and a high hardness. I have no tensile data to present, but I feel that it is not too optimistic to expect. that unusually high tensile strengths and good ductility can be obtained in this sintered material on the basis of the density and hardness data. The sintered stainless steel made by the above-described methods came out of the furnace very bright and clean. The purified hydrogen atmosphere is important in sintering stainless steel to reduce the oxide present in the powder. The result of such a sintering is good densification and good ductility of the sintered product. G. A. Roberts (authors' reply)—We are greatly indebted to Messrs. Hausner and Kalish for their discussions of our paper. Their encouraging remarks are greatly appreciated and their confirmatory data will do much to add to the value of the paper. At the present time it is impossible to provide complete data on a similar stainless steel powder without silicon, but we do know that, in general, the properties are slightly inferior. Data on such a powder and on other stainless steel types are to be published in the near future.

CONTINUED expansion of gold mining in 1935 led to further developments in treatment methods. In base metals and non-metallics progress is also noted, coincident with greater activity. Statistics are not available yet for 1935 but the trend is shown by 1934 when nonferrous ore mined in the United States was 35,840,737 tons, or 45 per cent more than in 1933. The amount concentrated was 27,167,530 tons or 75.80 per cent of the ore mined, and flotation was used in whole or part on over 96 per cent of the ore subjected to concentration. In the crushing field a new model of the Fahrenwald crusher is promised soon. The Symons fine-reduction cone crusher and Traylor secondary crusher continue to gain as intermediate crushers. A new book entitled "Crushers for Stone and Ore" by William T. W. Miller appeared. I. INTRODUCTION. THE purpose of this paper is, first, to give a general account of a little-known coal-district of SE. Kentucky, its topography, drainage, and mineral resources, for those who may be interested in its economic development; and secondly, so to describe the geologic features of the field as to furnish available data to those engaged on the broader problems of Appalachian coal-geology. The data from which the major portion of the paper has been prepared were obtained, in professional investigations for private individuals and corporations, within the last decade. The area under review, defined by a heavy line on the map, Fig. 1, lies between Little Black and Pine mountains, and extends from Harlan on the west to a N-S. line crossing Looney creek 3 miles from its mouth on the east. This area can be divided for description into a Western and an Eastern Division. The character of investigation pursued in the Western Division, below Fugitt creek, was very different from that employed in the Eastern. In the former, only a rapid reconnoissance was attempted : such coal-openings as had been made by prospectors or by citizens in obtaining fuel were visited, their sections measured and, in many instances, sampled. Elevations were obtained barometrically and approximate locations sketched on a small-scale map. In a field where the coals are so well opened, the reconnoissance method gives a very fair idea of the number and character of the principal beds and their relative positions, and affords much evidence for their correlation over wide areas, without permitting the more refined work required to discover all the seams of the measures and to determine the details of geologic structure.

THE following review covers published information on pressing of metal powders at room temperature. Only those operations are considered which occur between the time the powder is filled into the cavity and the compact is ejected from the die. Thus, this review does not concern hot pressing, coining or sizing feed or flow problems, commercial presses nor designs. It was also necessary to disregard to a large extent the effect of pressing on subsequent operations and on properties after sintering. The pressing operation is considered independently in its function to compact loose metal powder into useful shapes which can subsequently be handled. There are some comments by the writer in connection with a few of the findings quoted in the literature in order to stimulate thought and discussion. The selection of references quoted in the text is in some cases arbitrary although an attempt was made to favor papers containing novel ideas, techniques or results which may stimulate future research. In order to enable the reader to check further into the subjects mentioned, the original, rather extensive, bibliography is appended even though not all the references are touched on in the printed version of this review. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH The equipment used by various workers, for example a die design created by Bridgman,22 is very interesting. The die insert has a conical external surface. The vertical pressure exerted on the punch transmits itself to the die which in turn is pushed harder into its tapered retainer. Thus, the higher the pressure exerted on the punch, the higher also the pressure exerted inwards on the die inserts. In as much as this pressure counteracts the internal pressure from the compact the two stresses balance each other so that it is possible to obtain tremendous pressures without breaking the die. The die collar was made from an oil hardening tool steel, heat treated to a tensile strength of some 300,000 psi. The die was closed at the bottom by a plug made from special tool steels. Bridgman found that there is no steel which will withstand a compressive stress of 700,000 psi without continuous slow flow or immediate fracture. Therefore, the only material suitable for use in the pressing punch was sintered carbide. In view of the ingenious design it was possible to use special tool steel as die material. Jones22 raises the question whether this method of pressing has practical application in powder metallurgy. Al- though these tremendous pressures cannot readily be utilized without many special precautions, the tapered die and retainer idea is believed to be useful even for lower pressures. THOUGH the burning of fuels extends far back into antiquity, and though fuel beds are the most common and widely distributed example of chemical actions and engineering practice, there has been little attempt to group fuel beds by types or to define the principles associated with them. This paper does not profess to cover completely the subject of fuel beds. It suggests some of the over-all principles of the two more com-mon types. No new investigational data are included, but the deduc-tions are largely based on a recent publication of the U.S. Bureau of Mines1. DEFINITION OF TYPES There are three primary types of fuel beds: (1) Underfeed, in which the fuel and the air move in the same direction; (2) overfeed, in which the fuel and the air move in opposite directions; (3) crossfeed, in .which the fuel and the air move at right angles to each other. The principle that fixes the type is the relation between directions of the flow of fuel and of air. Fig. 1 shows the three types diagrammatically. All other types are compounded of these three in a simple or more or less complex manner. It does not follow that these three type designations are limited to the methods used in representing them in Fig. 1; they may be turned in any direction, and as long as the relative directions of the fuel and air are the same the type is not changed. For example, A as shown resembles a pot-type stoker, but the air and fuel can move downward as in the so-called smokeless heating boiler furnace. Also, C can be placed hori-zontal, as in chain-grate stokers. For this reason, the terms used to designate the three types are not all that could be desired; more logical ones could be coined, but those used probably are satisfactory until the discussion of fuel-bed types becomes more common.

RECENTLY, it has been demonstrated that a considerable densification and interparticle bonding can be achieved if a pressure is applied to a powder compact while the material of the compact is undergoing either a decomposition reaction' or a polymorphic transformation.' The term "reactive hot pressing" has been coined to identify this process in which a phase change is combined with pressure to achieve interparticle bonding. This process is based on a principle which postulates that there is an enhanced reactivity and mobility of the molecular species at the phase-transformation temperature and this effect is utilized for interparticle bonding in powder compacts. This note summarizes the results obtained in an attempt to utilize this technique to produce ceramic-metal composites. In this case, a decomposition reaction of a compound (which after decomposition yielded an oxide) was used to achieve interparticle bonding in ceramic-metal composites. The reactive hot pressing was carried out in a Phillips induction heating unit, using either a graphite or a high-temperature steel die which functioned as both the susceptor and the hot-pressing component. The die was heated to the desired temperature in a helium atmosphere. All cermets produced by this technique were based on alumina as the ceramic phase. Different metal phases such as iron, copper, and chromium were used to study the effect of varying the metal phase on the properties of the composite. a Mono-hydrate (Boehmite) was mixed with different proportions of metal powders (-325 mesh) in dry condition in a mortar and pestle. No special precautions were taken for proper mixing. The mixtures were then compacted into a cylindrical form having an approximate dimension of 1 cm in diameter and 1 cm in height. The first indication of tungsten in the Bishop area was the discovery of scheelite concentrations in a gold placer operation in the ( since named) Tungsten Hills in 1913. After early intermittent production, the deposits of the district were slowly discovered and developed. The Pine Creek mine, located in 1916 and under the direction of Union Carbide Corporation since 1935, became the principal producer in the district. By the end of 1965, the total production of the district had reached 3,450,932 units of WO3, 17,071,242 pounds of molybdenum, and 19,599,110 pounds of copper. The topography of the district is characterized by its extreme relief, ranging in elevation from 13,986 feet to about 4400 feet in the Mount Tom quadrangle. The present topography is the result of the uplift and erosion of the Sierra Nevada and the great subsidence of the Owens Valley with its related deposition and volcanism. The general structure of the pre-Tertiary rocks consists of a series of tightly-folded metasedimentary and metavolcanic rock remnants surrounded by exposed plutons ranging in composition from hornblende gabbro to alaskite. The metasedimentary rocks consist of low- to intermediate-grade metamorphic equivalents of fine-grained sediments deposited during the Paleozoic era in a miogeosynclinal environment. Later volcanics were deposited in a eugeosyncline. The ore bodies in the Bishop district consist of scheelite-bearing tactite formed by the pyrometasomatic replacement* of calcareous sediments along the contact with an acidic granitic intrusive. A number of the metasedimentary remnants have had tungsten deposited along their edges.

WTHIN the next month all members of the Institute will be given an opportunity to vote for a new President, two Vice-Presidents, and five Directors. All of the candidates nominated by the official committee are well known to certain groups of the Institute membership but a brief record of their professional lives will be given here for the information of those that will vote. Not since 1927, when Everette DeGolyer guided the destinies of the Institute, has a member of the Petroleum Division been a candidate for President. John Meston Lovejoy has been a Director since 1930, and a Vice-President as well for the last year: In the three years 1932-4 lie was also chairman of the Admissions Committee. Dir. Lovejoy graduated from the Columbia School of Mines in 1911, just before lie was 22 years old, and began his professional career as a copper miner at Chuquicamata. Chile. Silver and gold mining later claimed his % attention, and it was not until 1914 that lie gut into the oil business, as geologist for the Standard Oil Co. of N. Y. This took hint to China and he later worked for the company in Wyoming. In 1917 lie joined the Army where lie rose to be captain of Field Artillery. Upon his return to the United States he went to work for the Amerada Petroleum Co., of which he later became vice-president and general manager, with headquarters in Tulsa. Since coining to New York he has been president of the Petroleum Bond & Share Cu.. and is currently president of the Seaboard Oil Co.

BESIDES commanding increasing importance as an alloying element in combination with ferrous and other nonferrous metals, the variety of uses for pure nickel continues to widen. For coinage it is growing in popularity. These coins have been minted for 27 countries in 72 issues representing 69 denominations. Approximately 3,000,000,000 pieces have been struck, the aggregate weight, of which amounts to nearly 14,000 tons. . Danzig, Iraq and Japan are the most recent governments to adopt, pure nickel coinage. France is adding the denomination of five francs to its other nickel currency; they replace silver pieces. Germany is now minting a new issue of one Reichsmark coins of pure nickel. The Japanese program for 1933 called for the issue of 35,000,000 10-sen pieces and 30,000,000 5-sen pieces.
