The solubility of cementite in austenite is computed by thermodynamic methods from the observed solubility of graphite. It is found that the solubility of cementite is greater than that of graphite in the entire austenite temperature range. Thus the prior discrepancy between this portion of the phase diagram and the observed metastability of cementite is partially resolved. FOR several years it has been apparent that a serious discrepancy exists in certain observations pertaining to the Fe-C system. Direct experimental data indicate: 1-That the curve representing the solubility of graphite in austenite'" crosses that for cementite4 at about 945°C as shown in Fig. 1. 2— That graphite and austenite saturated therewith are stable1 relative to cementite at all temperatures between the eutectoid, about 723°C, and the eutectic, about 1153°C. These observations are mutually incompatible in view of a well-known consequence of the second law of thermodynamics, namely, that the stable phase (presumably graphite at all temperatures) has a lower solubility than the metastable phase (presumably cementite). Hence either 1 or 2 above must be in error; either the measured solubility of graphite or of cementite, or the observation as to the stability of graphite, is in error. Our present purposes are: 1—To collate the available data on cementite and prepare a table of HO — HO° and of (Fa— HO°)/T. This tabular method seems the best and most convenient way to represent the heat and free energy of formation. 2—To determine whether the measured solubilities of cementite and graphite in austenite are in accord with the above table and the measured thermodynamic properties of austenite, in order to resolve, if possible, the existing paradox of these two solubilities. Enthalpy of Cementite The enthalpy of cementite at 273 °K, H279 — HOcem, was computed by integration of the low temperature heat capacity as measured by Seltz, McDonald, and Wells" 68" to 298 °K) and as given by the Debye functions recommended by them (0" to 68°K); the result is included in Table I. At higher temperature HCem — H,,"" is given by Kelley who used the data of Naeser7 (298" to 1037°K) and of Umino8,9 (273° to 1923°K). We have recalculated Hcem — H273 cem from the data of UminoO in the following way. NOTHING stands still. We go forward or backward. As a distinct group of educators, our immediate concern is with the preparation of young men and women for participation in the mineral industries on a professional basis. I am going to have the temerity to state emphatically that for a long time as a whole we have remained in a static position. We are now confronted with the choice of advancement or retrogression. We are still in a position to make a choice and our ultimate fate will depend upon the course of action we elect to follow. Wars always have been great catalysts and social and scientific advancements mature under military stimulus in a fraction of the time normally consumed. We are now in the midst of a conflict whose duration or final effects cannot be estimated. However, the record already demonstrates that this war as never before is a mineral war in which incentive, strategy, and outcome are directly related to the distribution and utilization of minerals. The inevitable result is a drain upon our resources now reflected in our record production and a growing public consciousness of the importance of minerals in the role of human affairs. It is evident that we must seek new mineral frontiers beyond the borders of the United States and take every other precaution to forestall a "have-not" position in the world.

In its dual role of pig-iron smelter and gas producer, the blast furnace is a remarkably satisfactory and efficient apparatus. Many metallurgists and engineers have pointed out, however, that since the primary function of the blast furnace is to produce pig iron at the lowest possible cost, its function as a gas producer should be subordinated to this primary purpose. During the past 10 years or more, improvements in blast-furnace technique and economy have, in fact, been directed primarily to increasing efficiency in the use of the reducing power of the gases produced by combustion of coke at the tuyeres, to reduce iron ore within the furnace. The net over-all result is a decrease in the fuel value of the top gas per unit of volume, and per ton of pig iron, which is evidently more than offset in value by the corollary saving in coke and the possibility of increased furnace capacity, for otherwise there would be no point in making such improvements. The purpose of the present paper is to suggest that, while progress has been made in this direction, there is another approach to the problem of increasing the chemical and thermal efficiency of the blast furnace in its primary role as a pig-iron smelter, which appears to offer possibilities of improvement in over-all ecorlomy of a different order of magnitude than results thus far obtained by the use of other expedients. The present argument is based in large part upon the hypothesis that the efficiency and economics of pig-iron smelting are seriously and adversely affected by the phenomenon known as "solution loss," and that the problem of solution loss call be successfully attacked by increasing the over-all pressure; i.e., the "top prcssure" under which the furnace is operated. It is indicated that pressure operation may also be expected to result in concomitant benefits, which may be summed up as generally improved operating conditions, together with a substantial saving in fuel and/or a substantial increase in furnace capacity. In a broad sense, the suggestion of pressure operation of the pig-iron blast furnace is not new, for operation under moderately increased over-all pressure was suggested as early as 1871, by no less an authority than

George E. Collins, Nacoochee, Ga. (communication to the Secretary): The results tabulated below were obtained at the Reynolds mill, White county, Ga. They were noted, not with a view to investigating the point discussed by Mr. Clark, but in course of a test on a working scale to determine the com parative saving from a given free-milling ore on copper and silvered plates respectively. In every case the bullion assayed was the result of a separate clean-up on a considerable quantity of ore. The ore varied widely in grade and in other respects, but the runs bracketed in the table were made at the same time, in adjoining batteries, and on similar types of ore. In a * Result modified by the addition to the bullion-shipment of a little impure bullion left over from previous clean-ups.. On these occasions, the strips of copper were removed from the tables, and: their lower surfaces were cleaned. Hence the higher yield reported.

THE Aldrich Mining Co. holds under lease from the Illinois Central R. R. Co. about 14,000 acres, in the East half of Township 12, Range 12 `V., in Marion county, Alabama, and owns other lands, of which about 1,000 acres adjoin this leased tract, making a total area of about 15,000 acres, all of which is underlain by the coal-seam upon which the company is operating. This seam is nearly horizontal ; and a ravine, diagonally crossing the tract, exposes the outcrop on either side for about 2 miles. The territory has been so divided that nearly the whole of it can be worked out by two collieries. The mines at Brilliant were opened in the Fall of 1898, and shipments began in the following spring. The original plan was to furnish steam-coal for locomotives to the Illinois Central R. R. Co.; and upon this expectation the investment of capital was made. The field was entirely new; and the softness of the coal at the outcrop induced the belief that it could be very cheaply mined. A contract for the delivery of a large quantity of coal to the railroad was accordingly executed. But with the advance of the entries to increasing distances from the outcrop, the coal proved so hard that it could no longer be drilled with a breast-auger; and the expense of mining became so great that the contract for cheap steam-coal had to be cancelled. It became evident that the work must be done with machinery and explosives, if it could be profitably done at all. On the other hand, the excellent quality of this coal opened, at the same time, a possible market not specially contemplated at the outset-namely, that of a first-rate coal for domestic and general uses. (written discussion*).-In connection with Mr. Waring's quotation of Urbain's work, attention may be drawn to a remark found in the report of the session of the Société de Chimie Physique,1 held in December, 1909, that, while all blendes contain gallium in larger or smaller quantities, those blendes carrying indium are generally free from germanium, and vice versa. Urbain, furthermore, . expresses his conviction that this behavior, being related to the condi-tions of deposition of the ore, should be an important factor in determining the origin and mode of formation of zinc blende deposits., In. searching the literature for the naturally expected sequel to these remarks, there is found a report on the extraction of germanium from blende, after many months' work, on a commercial scale;2 then a paper3 on some Spanish blendes, all containing cadmium, examined by Urbain's 'method (this paper contains, also, very important work on the com-position and color of blendes, as well as on the occurrence of organic .matter and of inclusions in such blendes), and a second paper on Spanish blendes in general, in which this original point of Urbain's concerning the relative quantities of the three rare elements is taken up.4 Angel del Campo finds that of 68 specimens examined, four only were entirely free of germanium, gallium, and indium;. 38 had small proportions, while 19 were notably, and seven relatively rich in the three rare metals. He found the relative frequency to be: gallium in 60, germanium in, 50, and indium in 38; all three occurred in 29 cases; germanium and gallium together in 18; gallium and indium together in four; germanium and indium together without gallium, in none; four had gallium only, three had germanium only, and one had indium only; in 23 it appeared feasible to extract these elements. The end of the war in Europe and the Pacific failed to curb the upward trend of production in Venezuela,- which easily surpassed that of any previous year. The total production for 1945 amounted- to 323,369, 430 bbl., which was 26 per cent over the total for 1944, the previous peak in the history of the oil industry of the country. This increase was caused mainly by the greater demand for petroleum in the last stages of the war; the fact that the danger from enemy submarines had been overcome, which allowed all oil companies to use increased shipping facilities, and the fact that more materials were available for drilling operations. However, the materials supplied were by no means adequate and considerable credit is reflected on the Venezuelan petroleum industry for the increased production obtained by utilizing all available equipment to its fullest extent.

LABOR. conditions have finally caused rock-drilling machines to supplant hand drillers in the Japanese mining industry, and have encouraged this study. During a period of three years 25,000 tests were made on 67 different American, Japanese, and European rock drills, using, respectively, the Paynter testing machine, and drilling in granite and limestone. Recorded were: air consumption, speed of rotation, torque of rotation, foot-pounds of striking energy, air pressures, input horsepowers, and speed of rock penetration. The author expresses his views on the interrelation of these factors and offers theoretical support, as well, by formulas based upon the mechanics of impact. He discusses the different designs of the valves, cylinders, piston hammers and rotation devices involved in the different types of rock drills, with respect to their merits and defects and offers conclusions about the factors that should be considered in the new design of a superior rock drill. The author's mathematical demonstrations and arguments for a value of "best feed clearance" of the drill bit from the rock are based upon the hand-operated screw-fed type of hammer drill. Automatic feeds have not been considered in this paper except for the tests on one drifter with air feed, 10 air-feed stopers, and some hand-held blockholers. The following classes of drills, with one of each model, size, or type, were tested: 23 heavy drifters, 34 light drifters and hand-held drills, and 10 stopers. 'T. C. MERRIMAN, New Haven, Conn. (written discussion *).-This most interesting paper gives much carefully obtained and valuable data. However, there are two points in connection with the commercial application of such data that might possibly be a source of trouble and mis-understanding. In the first place, the examination of thin sections of annealed brass, subjected to standard Brinell test.(500 kg. on a 10-mm. diameter ball) at thicknesses from 0.075 to 0.150 in. (1.9 to 3.8 mm.) indicates that cold work has been performed on the specimen during the application of the load sufficient to extend way through the section, and have the hardness of the metal affected by the backing. If the usual steel support is used, this effect is very evident. If a piece of soft brass is used as a support, there is an indentation in the surface of the support accompanied by a bulge on the under side of the tested specimen opposite the impression made by the 10-mm. ball. The result is that Brinell specifications (governmental or otherwise) on stock for a certain purpose may not be fair in all cases, since manufacturers, owing to differences in equipment, etc., may not all use precisely the thickness and conditions of stock on which the Brinell specifications were based. This would mean that the government Brinell specification might not give them the temper of stock best suited for their manufacturing methods. The concluding paragraph of this paper, stating that "the hardness of cartridge brass may be determined with greater accuracy by the Brinell hardness measurement than by attempting to judge it from the grain size" appears to be in line with the movement of the last year or so among brass manufacturers toward substitution of the Brinell test for microscopic examination as an acceptance test on cartridge brass. The statement may he strictly true that the Brinell test is the best test for hardness, but it is not, as the statement might readily be construed, a sufficient test of suitable condition. For instance, some cartridge brass might accidentally have been overheated to a point where it would be distinctly unsafe to use for the manufacture of small arms cases and then be so rolled (reduction 3 to 5 per cent.) as to pass perfectly proper Brinell specifications. Under such conditions the microscope would reveal its unsuitability where the Brinell test had failed so to do.

The iron ore bodies of the Iron Springs district are replacement deposits of magnetite and hematite in Jurassic limestone around the borders of three intrusions of quartz-monzonite porphyry. Production in the period 1923-1965 was about 72,000,000 tons, nearly all of which was direct-shipping ore from open pits. The intrusions are laccolithic in form; all three were emplaced at the same stratigraphic horizon, which had been a zone of decollement gliding during the Laramide orogeny. The intrusions and associated volcanic rocks are post-orogenic. There was no change in the thickness of the limestone during the metallization. Comparison of the composition of the limestone and stratigraphically equivalent replacement ore indicates that, with every million tons of iron, there were additions of 40,000 tons of silicon, 20,000 tons of magnesium, and 10,000 tons of aluminum. The ore-forming fluid was derived from the exposed porphyry. The iron was first incorporated in hydroxyl-bearing mafics, which crystallized in depth and were carried upward in the magma that formed the hypabyssal intrusions. The mafic phenocrysts decayed deuterically in the new environment, releasing iron into the interstitial fluid of a consolidating crystal mush in the interior of the intrusions. Primary tension joints, which opened in areas of late intrusive distention, served as roots through which the ore-forming fluid was drawn from the crystal mush.

THE oxidation resistance of chromium and Fe-Cr alloys is increased by small additions of yttrium or other rare earth metals.1,2 In addition, the presence of the additives increases the resistance of these alloys to spalling of the external oxide above 1000°C. This ability to prevent spalling appears to be related to the formation of an internal oxide in alloys containing yttrium or the other rare earth metals. The internal oxide is found in the form of a filamentary growth concentrated in the grain boundaries of the unoxidized metal. In alloys containing yttrium this internal oxide was found to be either Y2O3 Or YCrO3.' In an earlier report,' the growth of the external oxide was found to be controlled by diffusion through the oxide layer. Thermal balance studies were used to establish the kinetics of external oxide formation. In this related study the rate of growth of the internal filamentary oxide has also been studied. The results obtained indicate that the growth of the internal oxide is also diffusion controlled. Internal oxidation appears to occur in at least two ways. Using copper alloys containing small amounts of silicon, Rhines 3 found that between 600" and 1000oC a subscale was formed which consisted of particles of silica dispersed in the metallic matrix. The conditions requisite to internal oxidation as suggested by Rhines are: 1) a solubility of oxygen in the alloy, 2) the ability of oxygen to diffuse at an appreciable rate into the alloy, 3) the possibility of the formation by the alloying element of an oxide more stable than the oxide of the host metal, and 4) a relatively low solubility of this oxide in the metal. These conditions are fulfilled for a number of other copper alloys.3-5 Furthermore, the relationship between the depth to which the internal oxide is formed and the oxidation time follows the simple parabolic law.6 The activation energy for copper containing small amounts of silicon, germanium, iron, or manganese as calculated from Rhines data6 is about 48 kcal per mole. In some cases the internal oxide is found segregated at the grain boundaries, especially near the the surface. Observations of this type of oxide formation have been reported by stead,7 Rhines,* and Lustman. MOST recently elected to the limited group of Honorary Members in the A.I.M.E. is the distinguished Australian metallurgist, Guillaume Daniel Delprat. His citation reads: "in recognition of his distinguished achievement as metallurgist, engineer, and administrator in the production of ferrous and nonferrous metals," Mr. Delprat's ability and experience in both the ferrous and nonferrous fields at once distinguishes him from most of his professional brothers. Mr. Delprat's nativity was neither Australian nor English, for he was born in Delft, Holland, in 1856, and educated in Amsterdam. At the age of 22 he went to Spain, as metallurgist for the Tharsis Sulphur and Copper Co., Ltd. Afterwards he spent some time with the Bede Metal and Chemical Co., which had mines in both Spain and Norway, and of which company he became general manager. Other positions of responsibility held by Mr. Delprat before he went to Australia included the managing directorship of the Cordova Exploration Co., with properties in Spain and Canada; of the Rincon Silver-Lead Mining Co., in Spain; and of the Deloro Gold Mines, in Canada.

THERE are many who know The Lucky Tiger and will remember the 35-mile road from Esqueda, a station on The Nacozari Railroad in northern Sonora, Mexico. They will remember the box canyons of the Agua Caliente Mountains which are scarcely wide enough for two cars to pass; the Bavispe River which one hour may be a lazy trickle and the next a sweeping torrent, and the tortuous road up Tigre and Espuela canyons, now following the wash, now hugging some gigantic red cliff. It is still the same. From camp the view of the distant blue-gray mountains is the same. But one thing a visitor of a former day might miss: The hundreds of pack mules and burros, loaded with concentrates from the mill, which used to take most of the road and show up at the most inopportune places, have almost disappeared, replaced of course by the auto truck.

The economics of aerial survey and the technical processes by the aid of which vertical and oblique aerial photographs are turned into line maps showing the most profuse topographical detail such as contours, rivers, roads, plantations, habitations and cultivated lands do not concern us here. They have been ably and exhaustively described in the publications of the British War Office, handbooks on surveying methods and on photogrammetry and in the South African mining, engineering and geological press. Suffice it to mention that for geological interpretation vertical photographs are used on such scales as 1/5000 to 1/10,000, overlapping each other by 55 to 60 per cent in the direction of flight and some 10 to 20 per cent sideways on to the next sequence or strip. Through this duplication in the overlap the stereoscopic examination becomes possible. The standards by which monochrome aerial photographs are interpreted can be grouped under the following headings: 1. Continuity.—The continuity of topographic relief not obtainable on the ground owing to the smallness of man relative to that relief. Here lies the greatest value of aerial survey with relation to geology. An immediate alignment can often be made of drainages running in different directions on each side of a hill; saddles and gorges in the mountainsides; abrupt termination of outcrop or indubitable signs of faulting. Most conclusive evidence is thus often obtained about faults which may be perfectly visible at one place on the ground but cannot elsewhere be identified because of decreased throw. Similarly, dikes can often be followed notwithstanding frequent interruption and disappearance under the soil. Scattered outcrop in scrub-covered or bush-covered country can be conveniently located and often correlated, with a large saving of time compared with field work. The same applies to geological contacts. Once these have been established at a few points on the ground, the intervening stretches can be drawn in.

ON THE QUESTION of postwar controls there are today three schools of though ; some advocate state control of everything the socialists ; second are those who advocate the removal of all governmental control over industry - the freedom of enterprise ideal ; and third are those who advocate a middle course - sufficient control to stabilize economic and industrial life, and to prevent violent fluctuations such as we saw in the interwar years. I advocate this third course. I firmly believe un free enterprise, but not in freedom of enterprise, or laissez faire, and there is a great and significant difference between these two.

Located in virgin coal acreage near Gilbert, W. Va., Massey Coal Mining Co.'s Ben Creek No. 2 mine afforded the company's engineers the opportunity of designing and laying out the entire mining operation from the mine faces to the railroading loading site. However, the topography of this region posed difficult problems in haulage of coal for, in this extremely rugged terrain the uppermost coal seams lay in the mountain-top ridges, approximately 1400 ft above the valley floor. The decision for mining equipment naturally leaned to the new high-capacity continuous miners where seam conditions permitted: otherwise, to the new super-high capacity conventional cutting and loading machines. Since the coal seams lay in ridges and points of considerable outcropping, the decision was to keep the transportation on the surface and mine the coal with multiple entries into the outcrop. This way, the major problems of underground haulage, drainage, and ventilation are eliminated, and the opportunity to take advantage of a-c underground power becomes a much simpler proposition.
