The main problem of geostatistical simulations is to reproduce the real characteristics of the mineral deposit when there are few conditioning data. In this case, the geological interpretation, based on structures, geophysics and geological maps, plays the major role in terms of resource evaluation.The paper investigates the use of principal component analysis (PCA) to help classify multiple geostatistical categorical simulations considering the similarity among them and the interpreted model, herein referred as training image (TI).An iron deposit with four lithological facies, in a specific horizontal plane, was used as case study for two-dimensional (2D) simulations. Sequential indicator simulations (SIS) was used to obtain ten equally probable 2D images, which were generated and compared against the interpreted model (TI).In this study, 11 random variables are comprised by the vector of ten SIS realisations plus the training image (TI). The similarity between the TI and each SIS realisation is measured using the angle between the TI and SIS vectors projected in the new coordinate systems (PCA factors). It is possible to order the SIS realisations from the highest to the lowest PCA factor taking into account the TI similarity.The visual analysis of the images shows coherence in the PCA results as a method to measure similarity. This methodology can be used as a post-processing tool to rank simulation results and to select the ones which better represent the prior known geology or to compare the quality of different methods of simulation.

Occurrence data of Tastubian,Sterlitamakian, and Aktastinian (all of Sakmarian Stage of Early Permian) brachiopod genera are analysed by Q-mode cluster analysis, principal component analysis, and discriminant analysis based on presence or absence of genera. Five faunal provinces and their corresponding generic associations persisted throughout the Sakmarian Stage. The additional Sasian Province incorporating the Lhasa and Shan-Thai terranes became recognisable in Sterlitarakian and strengthened in òAktastinian, implying a Tastubian-Sterlitamakian rifting event, followed by subsequent northward drift and divergence from Gondwana, and convergence with Laurasia. The nature of Permian 'Tethys' is discussed on the basis of faunal migration and abrupt changes of faunal provinciality in Lhasa and Shan-Thai terranes.

Crocidolite deposits in the Hamersley Ranges, NW. of Western Australia, occur over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20' to 30 miles. Their stratigraphic environment and mineralogy is comparable to that of similar deposits of the Cape Belt, South Africa. It is probable that the known exposures' represent only a small portion of the total extent.Current production is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Ltd. at Wittenoom Gorge and has been in the order of 1,2,000 to 14,000 long t.p.a over the past six years.INTRODUCTIONThe Hamersley Ranges are located in the NW. Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21° 30' to 23°S and longitudes 117° to 1200 E. Their mean height above sea level is 2,000 ft, and they rise from 600 to 800 ft above the general level of the tableland which extends SE. from the coastal town of Roebourne.Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 ft above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, which are dry during the greater part of the year. These streams have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of crocidolite outcrop.The presence of the mineral was first recorded in 1917, but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when strong market demand for crocidolite resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Dale's Gorges. It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi Wolli Springs NW. to Millstream station, Le., over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. Magnetic separator operation in the recovery of magnetite in heavy medium circuits was studied by conducting a series of tests on a full size wet drum magnetic separator.The significant operational variables were found to be feed pan clearance, squeeze pan clearance, dry magnetite feed rate and separator drum speed. With feed and squeeze pan clearances optimized for typical primary separator operation, magnetite loss and concentrate specific gravity were found to be related in a regular manner to dry magnetite feed rate at any drum speed.A two component model of magnetite loss is proposed, relating total magnetite loss to losses in the feed pan and squeeze pan zones. The experimental curves relating magnetite loss to dry magnetite feed rate at the various drum speeds are interpreted in terms of the two component model.The magnetite particle size distribution in the separator was also examined. The tailings magnetite was found to be finer than the feed magnetite only when the dry magnetite feed rate was low, or immediately following the introduction of a new charge of magnetite when the separator was fed at an intermediate dry magnetite feed rate.

The overwhelming weight of scientific opinion indicates that human activity is having a discernible and negative influence on the earthÆs climate system. The Australian Government, together with about 100 other nations, has accepted the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change third assessment report, released in 2001. This report was prepared by several hundred eminent scientists from all over the world, from various scientific disciplines and with differing opinions on global warming. The IPCC third assessment report contains a series of relevant, significant conclusions; for example, it finds that there is an increasing body of observations that gives a collective picture of a warming world and other changes in the climate system. Global average surface temperature increased over the past 100 years by about 0.6¦C. This may not seem much, but in the 900 years beforehand, the EarthÆs temperature remained relatively stable. The 20th century was the warmest of the past 1000 years in the northern hemisphere (there is much better information available from the northern hemisphere than the southern hemisphere). The 1990s were the warmest decade of the millennium in the northern hemisphere and 1998 was the warmest year. Although many factors influenced the EarthÆs climate, scientists are confident that greenhouse gas increases were the main factor contributing to global warming in the last 50 years of the 20th century. Increases in carbon dioxide, methane, troposhperic (lower atmosphere) ozone, halocarbons and nitrous oxide have all contributed to global warming. Combating climate change cannot be done without the cooperation of industry and the community at large. It is important that Government and industry work together to achieve greenhouse gas abatement while ensuring continued economic growth. The cause of the problem û the generation of greenhouse gas emissions û lies at the heart of the structure and size of modern economic activity. Greenhouse gas emissions are embedded in our way of life from our energy consumption patterns to the basic production of food. Moreover, the costs of the impacts of climate change to the earth will be potentially revolutionary, not merely evolutionary. It is in this light, acknowledging both the seriousness and nature of the problem before us that I want to reflect on the key drivers in the international climate change negotiations. A consideration of the past, present and future from what I see as the mid-way point in the process. In 1997, Parties agreed to adopt the Kyoto Protocol, which sets out mandatory targets for greenhouse gas emissions for developed countries.

A critical aspect of geometallurgy is quantifying mineralogical and textural relationships that affect mineral processing (eg, liberation and recovery). However, to date, this has been an expensive and time consuming venture and only minimal amounts of this type of data are typically available to be included in the mine planning process. Our research is focused on developing methods that will produce the required mineralogical and textural data rapidly and inexpensively. New methods of characterising liberation potential from image analysis of coarse particulate material and direct small-scale flotation measurement are compared with measurement of liberation at final grind size (ie conventional tests on MLA). The new tests are designed to rank the liberation potential of samples in order to classify an ore deposit into domains of low, medium and high liberation potential. This parameter can then be used to adjust the cutoff used to differentiate ore from waste. Results to date show that all tests provide the same ranking for the samples. The measurement based on coarse particulate material compares favourably to the results from MLA analyses on the same samples. Further work is being carried out to determine which of the tests will be the most effective in terms of time, effort and cost

Though many mining and mineral processing companies have embraced the principles of sustainable development (SD), there is still a significant challenge of applying these in a practical sense, either in plant design or as part of day-to-day operations. The high-level nature of sustainability concepts often do not translate easily into workable activities or business case evaluations. This makes it difficult for engineers and company decision makers to understand whether their actions are making a contribution to sustainable development and a long-term business case. While several organisations have their own SD tools that can, to a degree, help identify these opportunities, they are largely ad-hoc and lack the necessary thoroughness to defensibly value these opportunities. Recognising these serious shortcomings, the Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP) has undertaken the development and trial applications of SUSOP« (SUStainable OPerations), a new concept that is somewhat analogous to HAZOP and the wider risk and safety frameworks used in projects today. The key goal of the SUSOP« research project is to produce a holistic, systematic and rigorous framework for project development, capturing, recording and evaluating SD opportunities and constraints against a chosen sustainability structure (eg Five Capitals). SUSOP« is being developed through an iterative process with input from research institutions and engineering companies. This integrated approach ensures that SUSOP«, in its final form, will have the academic rigour and industry realism required to assist the resource sector contribute to societal sustainability by embedding the concepts and processes into the design and operation of their assets in a meaningful and practical manner. SUSOP« has created much traction with both engineering companies and mining and minerals operators. This conference paper presents an overview of the SUSOP« framework and its current suite of processes as well as highlighting, through practical case studies, its capability to incorporate SD considerations at different phases of an engineering project's development.

The purpose of this paper is to describe briefly the clean-up procedure adopted at the treatment plant of Paringa Mining & Exploration Co. Ltd. at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.A clean-up is carried out at the end of each four-weekly period, and all figures subsequently quoted are taken from a summary of the results of the eight periods ending 8th April, 1941.STRAKING AND AMALGAMATIONOf the total gold won 22· 77 per cent. is recovered by straking and amalgamation.The discharges of both the primary and secondary ball mills are pumped over a common set of five ten feet long by three feet wide straking tables, set at an angle of 10 degrees, before passing to the 14 ft. diameter by 30 ft. by 8 ft. Dorr bowl classifier.This classifier is in closed circuit with both of the ball mills, hence the whole of the circulating load of the fine grinding circuit, which approximates to 800 per cent., is required to pass over the straking tables. For convenience in handling, corduroy cloths are used in lengths of 5 feet, and are picked up and replaced by clean cloths at four-hourly intervals. The avaHable straking area provided is, therefore, 900 square feet, or approximately 3·30 square feet per original ton per 24 hours. The density of the pulp passing over the tables is about 54 per cent. solids, the area provided per ton of pulp per 24 hours being approximately o· 2() square feet. Washing of the corduroy cloths is carried out on the day shift only, about 800 lb. of strake concentrate being obtained daily.This concentrate is sluiced from the washing trough on the elevated straking floor to the 4 ft. by 2 ft. diameter amalgamating barrel located in the gold room below.The barrel is of standard design and is rotated at 25 r.p.m. It is charged each day at 4 p.m., and grinding of the strake concentrate at approximately 70 per cent. solids is continued until 8 a.m. the following day. The barrel is then stopped, and the contents generously diluted with water, and after a few minutes rotation some of the slime is carefully poured off through the small discharge hole. This dilution and decantation is repeated until a good deal of the valueless slime has been removed.A further quantity of strake concentrate is then charged to the barrel, which is allowed a further 16 hours grinding period. After again diluting and decanting, approximately 25 lb. of mercury and 15 lb. of lime are added to the charge, which is then given an amalgamation period of 2 hours before cleaning up.By the process of grinding, diluting and removal of slime by decanting...

"Three issues of relevance in a modern tailings storage facility (TSF) are:geotechnical stabilitymanaging acid rock drainage (ARD) from pyritic tailingsmanaging the tailings from cyanidation of gold ores. Drawing on examples from both copper porphyry flotation and sulfide-hosted gold ores, this paper demonstrates that giving some weight and importance to the process tails properties upfront can influence the flow sheet and not only improve tailings management effectiveness but also impact positively on economics. In the case of a typical copper porphyry ore with moderate pyrite content, the rougher tail in a conventional high pH selective flotation step is usually classified as potentially acid generating (PAG). To avoid the generation of ARD within the tailings and the requirement for a costly plastic lining, subaqueous deposition is recommended, which in turn has negative implications for tailings stability, consolidation and closure. Adopting a neutral pH rougher stage rejects silicate gangue but recovers pyritic material to the cleaners for a subsequent selective flotation stage, often after regrinding. This effectively quarantines the PAG pyritic material in a much lower volume cleaner tail, which can then be appropriately encapsulated within a larger non-lined flotation tails facility. It also facilitates cyanide leaching of the cleaner tail for gold recovery, with the encapsulated tailings facility being suitable for cyanidation tails storage. A case study from Europe is examined. For gold ores where the gold is sulfide-hosted, but not refractory, a flotation route with cyanidation of the concentrate can similarly produce the majority of tailings as a benign flotation tail and again quarantine the low volume concentrate leach tail in a small encapsulated cell with appropriate residual cyanide management measures applied. Overall economics for intensive leaching of a low volume concentrate stream can also be surprisingly positive. A feasibility study design example of the process and TSF is presented. Nowadays mining projects are seeking new versions of evaluation that are based on the flexibility in the project. Real option valuation (ROV) is one of the modern evaluation methods that provides a tool to adapt and revise mining projects under uncertainty and future variable movements. Most evaluation approaches simply assume that some variables are fixed, such as production rate, variable cost, fixed cost and lifetime of project. The first section of this paper reviews a comprehensive study of ROV in mining projects. The paper then introduces a new model that solves problems where previous methods lacked. The new method endeavours to find maximum mining project value by adding total cost as a function of production rate into ROV. The second section has been applied to a new model on the Century zinc mine in north-west Queensland, thus illustrating the future overview of that mine. The new version of ROV gave a significant positive value for the Century Mine, when the closure and reopening options where available throughout the life of the mine. Consequently, the new method evaluates real options to add value to mining projects, maximising projectÆs value, estimating cost function, optimising production rates and offers opportunities in projects to amplify gains or to mitigate losses.

The Carina iron ore deposit lies 105 km northeast of Southern Cross, WA. The area designated the Yilgarn Iron Ore Project (YIOP) is comprised of five prospects along an east-southeast trending greenstone belt that extends from the Helena-Aurora Ranges in the northwest to the Yendilberrin Hills in the southeast, over a strike length of approximately 40 km. The YIOP project encompasses the previously identified iron deposits of Bungalbin, Bungalbin East and Mt Walton. The Carina deposit was discovered by Polaris Metals NL in May 2007. The Carina deposit is located within and parallel to the structurally complex northwest trending Mount Dimer shear zone. The volcanosedimentary Archaean-aged greenstone sequence consists of ultramafic and mafic lavas and flows with interbedded sediments dominated by chert and banded iron formation (BIF). Supergene enrichment processes formed a goethite orebody replacement of BIF sequences within a doubly plunging synclinal fold structure. Mineralised outcrops dominated by goethite form a low ridge 1500 m long, up to 90 m wide and drilled to over 200 m in depth. In the vicinity of the Carina deposit, iron occurrences have been identified over at least a 12 km strike length and the exploration potential of the area is identified as 30 - 40 Mt. Polaris Metals began exploration in the area in 2006. Target generation in the area used existing state geological survey maps and regional magnetic survey data to focus on BIF occurrences associated with major structures. Early field investigations resulted in the identification of a large outcrop of predominantly goethite mineralisation at Carina. Detailed geological and structural mapping was completed, followed by close-spaced reverse circulation and diamond drilling. The mineralisation is predominantly goethite with specular and coarse platy haematite localised along structures that cut the goethite mineralisation. Mineralised zones are moderately vuggy and larger cavities occur in proximity to fault zones that transect the orebody. A capping by a thin veneer up to 9 m thick of canga or ferricrete occurs in places. By December 2008, 178 reverse circulation and 11 diamond drill holes (seven surface holes, four tails) were completed. The current JORC-compliant resource estimate is based on assays from 72 RC drill holes and using a 55 per cent Fe cut-off stands as an Inferred Resource of 27.9 Mt at 58.6 per cent Fe, 1.3 per cent Al2O3, 3.7 per cent SiO2, 0.09 per cent P, and 10.1 per cent LOI. Assaying has recently been completed and will be incorporated into a new updated resource later in 2009.

MetPlant conferences have focused on ensuring mining projects are well designed then optimised to operate safely and effectively at the top end of world’s best practice to ensure shareholders are not just happy but delighted. This assumes the MetPlant was built right the first time. However, reality is, too often Plant Metallurgists (PlantMets) find after commissioning they are faced with the expensive task of correcting errors or modifying shortcomings to achieve product quality at name-plate capacity, i.e. get it right the second time. Why do companies spend good money to engineer an excellent feasibility study then allow “wise men” remote from the project team to impose cuts in budget and schedule, often under the guise of value engineering? Since mining is full of uncertainties, such actions can increase the risks of failure with the result that some MetPlants do not work well. Can PlantMets influence the remote wise men who often are also imposing the rules for lending and the required returns to appreciate the uncertainties of mining and their associated risks then let the project team get it right the first time? PlantMets can negotiate with the wise men from the outset of the project and bring them into an outer layer of the team where they can understand the risks then share responsibility and accountability to achieve the common goal of building a MetPlant which works well the first time and deliver the forecast profits. Since shareholders are not in the business to make losses they appoint a Board of Directors to deliver the best outcomes for the shareholders. PT Freeport Indonesia recently completed preproduction development and construction of the Big Gossan underground copper and gold mine, located in the Ertsberg mining district of Papua, Indonesia. Production has commenced with an expected ramp-up to full production of 7000 tonnes per day in 2012. The Big Gossan utilises an open stoping mine method with paste backfill.In order to deliver ore to the mill, which sits in a valley above the ore deposit, an underground production shaft and hoisting facility was designed and constructed as the key component of ore haulage. The design and construction of the Big Gossan shaft posed many challenges to the project team. Available shaft design and construction expertise were limited as this was the first shaft of its kind in Indonesia and the project was undertaken during a time of high industry demand for new shaft systems. Construction resources were also limited due to the remote location and competition with existing, producing mines for these resources and skills. The project also taxed the ability of Freeport to provide services and resources to this as well as their other projects.Completion of the Big Gossan shaft was a milestone in PT Freeport Indonesia’s plan to fully transition ore production to the underground environment in this decade.This paper deals with the various challenges faced by PT Freeport Indonesia and shaft contractor, PT Redpath Indonesia, during the construction of the Big Gossan shaft and offers suggestions to improve future shaft projects of a similar nature.

Everyone present today is especially aware of the need for minerals in this society of ours. The words 'especially aware' were deliberately chosen because this is a meeting of the NZ Branch of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy not a dilettante group such as some of our critics. Members of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy knew that our great farming industry, our shelter, our transport and our energy supply, are largely dependent on a flow of minerals into this country despite the presence of large coal and natural gas reserves. Flow in was said because New Zealand imports most of its mineral requirements with all the consequential strategic and economic disadvantages. If the above statements are accepted by this gathering it would be a premise fairly stated that New Zealand has a great need to discover and develop minerals.

The second will be a technical paper on the development of a welded coupling compatible with urethane lined pipework. We trust that by discussing our recent work we can leave two lasting impressions on you: the versatility and useful role of slurry transportation, and the leading role taken by New Zealand in this technology This paper discusses three recent projects the New Zealand Steel Ironsand Transfer Line the Coarse Coal Ship Loading Technology the Nerang River Sand By-pass System. These have followed on from the other slurry projects with which McConnell Dowell has been associated such as the ironsand export trade at Waipipi and Taharoa. The New Zealand Contractors Federation awarded the Construction Award for 1986 to McConnell Dowell for the Ironsand Slurry Pipeline.

Comparison of Grinding and Liberation Processes for Stalky Biomass Materials as a Prerequisite for Production of Energy Pellets with High Calorific Value Pelletising biomass, especially straw and stalky materials, requires a product specific size reduction and liberation. However, moisture content plays an important role in palletising and also affects the energetic properties of the biomass. The paper illustrates the characteristics of the mentioned type of biomass and specifies the necessities for production of energy pellets. Defined requirements for biomass energy pellets will be shown based on relevant standards. The work focuses on a comparative investigation of the straw fibres after grinding with hammer/impact mill and after the liberation of the straw fibres with twin-screw extruder (two different communition units). A traditional hammer mill as well as an hydrothermal process taking place in a twin-screw extruder were utilised. Results of the grinding and liberation of rye and wheat straw fibres are discussed based on a detailed particle characterisation (particle size and shape distribution). Besides high calorific value the main pellet quality parameters are mechanical stability, abrasion resistance and further combustion technical characteristics. The particle size distribution displayed optimum characteristics for the combustion processes to be carried out in a furnace. The durability of the pellets produced from straw fibres liberated with twin-screw extruder was comparatively better then that prepared with the straw fibres after grinding with impact mill. Particle size distribution, abrasion values and the strength characteristics showed a good correlation with each. The high presence of N and S would result in high NOx and SOx emissions, where as the high concentrations of Cl would corrode the furnace. These chemical properties of the straw would restrict its usage in small scale furnaces.

The limit of pressure to which an underground dam may with safety be subjected, is a question that-as far as the writer knows has not received the same attention from authorities on engineering construction, or practical mining, that has been accorded to questions on which the design and strength of other structures or machines in connection with a mine are based. That dams may, under certain conditions, be constructed to resist water under great pressure is a known fact. But the difficulty of demonstrating beforehand that any proposed structure of this kind will withstand the pressure and be effective is, owing to the indeterminate nature of some of the risks to be provided against, very great. In the present state of our knowledge it may almost be laid down as a rule, that a dam of this kind should not be undertaken where grave consequences would attend failure until experience of structures where the physical conditions are similar, but where there are no such risks, has given assurance that such work would stand.In Mines and Minerals for May, 1900, there is published a paper by Mr. James McNaughton describing the construction of three underground dams in the iron mining district of Michigan.The first of these was put in to hold back a flow of 750 gallons per minute, which when pent up created a pressure of 276 pounds per square inch, showing that the height of the sustained column was about 635 ·feet. The hole through which the water issued was in the bottom of the cross cut it was enlarged by removing all loose rock for a depth of 18 ft...

With the proving of a mineable orebody at Orlando in May 1961, Peko Mines N.L. was faced with the decision of whether to mill the ore on site or to haul it 25 miles to central facilities at Peko. Orlando was a relatively small orebody, so that it was decided to haul, although no reliable assessment of possible ore haulage costs was available.The necessity for a good haul road was recognised from the beginning and a 17 mile, 12 ft wide, single seal bitumen road was constructed, to link the mine to the Stuart Highway and Peko. The initial selection of 20 ton capacity diesel-powered end-tipping ore carts was made, with the best information available at the time.Since then some 130,000 tons of ore have been carted over a period of 3 years, and this paper presents the experiences of this haulage operation and the lessons learned.A second mine has just been brought into operation at Ivanhoe, 19 miles from Peko. For this haul it was decided to use an ore haulage vehicle of the side tipping road train type, which would cart some 70 tons, or more than three times the load of the vehicles initially selected.Only about 5,000 tons had been hauled at the date of this paper, but preliminary figures indicate a cost 01 1· 65d./ton-mile as against 2·47d. for the smaller vehicles.It would appear that the road haulage of ore from small outlying mines to a central plant can be highly economical, if certain basic rules concerning haul roads and vehicle selection are followed. This paper does not try to determine the maximum tonnages and haul distances which would finally make road hauling uneconomical...

The title of this address was selected before I had an opportunity to consider in detail the matters that I would like to discuss. Accordingly, I chose a very broad subject-so broad indeed that it would be foolhardy for me to attempt to deal with more than a few aspects of it. I do not propose to touch. at all on the developments to date of our mining and metallurgical enterprises, beyond paying a sincere tribute'to the skill and enterprise of those who have established an international reputation for Australian mining and metallurgy. I would rather look ahead and discuss certain factors that will play a decisive part in the future development of our mineral resources. I do this in no dogmatic spirit, and I hope that my remarks may lead to discussions which will stimulate action where it is needed.In recent years my colleagues and I have been forced by circumstances to give consideration to problems in the fields of mining and geology, and in process metallurgy, which lie outside the scope of our own research work. People come to us with metallurgical problems because they know of no more appropriate place to go, and it is distressing to have to inform them that it is nobody's job to offer them advice and assistance. I want to suggest to your Institute that it should press strongly for the provision of properresearch facilities for the mining and metallurgical industries, such as aready exist in most enlightened countries. In such countries, those connected with the development of mineral resources are able to obtain information and advice from Geological Surveys, Mines Departments or Bureaux of Mines, which offer far more comprehensive services than are available in this country.Before discussing specific technical problems of the mining and minerals industries, I shall enunciate certain general principles that I believe should be followed in respect to the technical side of the development of all Australian industries. The problem can, I suggest, be considered in three parts-technical education production, and research. I shall confine my remarks mostly to the research aspect, for it is with this that I am most familiar.For the efficient development of any industry in Australia, it is essential firstly that We should learn what is going on abroad, and secondly that we should simultaneously conduct independent research. In the latter sphere the Governmeht'departments and the private companies' or groups of companies should have complementary functions, the former concentrating on problems common to a number of companies or industries, and the latter on their oWn individual problems.
