Theories of ore genesis. have both practical and philosophical application-practical in that they influence our search for new ore bodies; philosophical in that they provide a test for our theories of petrogenesis-and our ingenuity.For example, the theory of granitization requires an explanation of ore genesis compatible with the general concepts of granitization.Our understanding of some processes of ore formation, such as supergene enrichment, or the formation of residual lateritic iron ores, is so complete as to permit of nq controversy.For other ores, like the oolitic iron ores of England and France, and elsewhere, or the segregations of chromite or ilmenite in basic igneous rocks, the broad principles are generally agreed on; dispute is limited to details of process.But for a wide range of ore deposits there is no such agreement. Completely incompatible hypotheses are advanced to explain' identical facts, and we have difficulty in finding new facts or criteria that will distinguish unambiguously between them.In thinking about such ores, a co:n;venient starting point is provided by Schneiderhohn's (1953) fourfold division of ore deposits:1. The secondary hydrothermal ore deposits occurring in Mesozoic-Neozoic cover strata of Europe.2. The "regenerated" younger ore deposits in Alpine type mountain chains.3. Post-Cambrian primary hydrothermal ore deposits.4. Ore deposits of the PreCambrian shields.To these we may add a fifth group:5. Stratigraphically controlled sulphide deposits.

Risk and dispute resolution are linked. Dispute resolution techniques are brought to bear on a dispute - which is an outcome of a risk being wholly or partially realised. There has been an increasing awareness by business of risk as a component of doing business. There is an accompanying awareness of the need to manage risk - including legal risk. Many companies have undertaken a systematic review of their potential risks and endeavoured to put in place systems to help to avoid or manage risks. A legal risk management program will not prevent disputes arising. However, such a program should prescribe how that dispute will be managed. The management of the dispute will involve consideration of the dispute resolution procedure to be adopted. The most appropriate processes will take into account the practical, personal and commercial considerations surrounding the dispute and be as efficient, cost-effective and user friendly as achievable in the circumstances for the benefit of all the parties. Carrying on business in South East Asia, whether as an explorer or a mining operator, brings additional considerations to bear in legal risk management and the dispute resolution process. A significantly different perspective is required due to the varying nature of the legal systems in many South East Asian jurisdictions. These jurisdictions often have relative uncertainty as to the law. This impacts on the dispute resolution processes and also raises further timing and cost issues. The authors contend that this is all the more reason to endeavour, as practically as possible, to adopt a legal risk management and dispute resolution profile which will provide business with the greatest prospects of maintaining control of the dispute resolution process. This presents a greater chance of a successful outcome to the dispute. In these times of increasing pressures on profitability because of low mineral prices, all costs of a minerals business are being reviewed. In such times, a significant legal dispute may have even greater potential to adversely impact on the companies concerned, together with the careers of the people involved. In this paper possible approaches to managing disputes and a case study a legal dispute in which Freehill Hollingdale and Page were involved are discussed. The dispute concerned an international mining company developing a gold mine in Indonesia and one of its contractors in Indonesia. Described is how that dispute was resolved. This achieved a very satisfactory result for the client - all things considered. Given the æadditionalÆ problems associated with ascertainment and enforcement of ærightsÆ in South East Asia, the longer the parties can retain control over their dispute the better off they will be. For this reason, the authors set out in this paper the main additional dispute resolution tools available - that are appropriate for use throughout South East Asia.

The authors describe two stratiform intrusions within a two miles thick ophiolite belt, one of the many ophiolite (serpentine) belts of the eugeosynclinal sequences of the Kalgoorlie System (metamorphic age c.2700 million years). Unusually good evidence of gravitational differentiation involving cumulates for an Alpine type peridotite-gabbro intrusion has been obtained, in spite of modifications of the original igneous rocks imposed by regional metamorphism. Unmetamorphosed relics of cumulate rocks are a surprising feature of this occurIfence.'fhe differentiation process reflected in the layered sequences is compared to that of the Stillwater Intrusion, Montana. Phase, cryptic and rhythmic layering are recognized. The economic significance of this study lies not only in the possibility of nickel mineralization in this ophiolite belt, but also in that much detailed information on the nature of these belts, which is difficult to obtain in the case of the more altered and sheared rocks of the belts carrying gold and nickel ore deposits nearby, is gathered from the Yilmia occurrences.

The Pilbara region of Western Australia is well known for its abundant exports of hematite-goethite deposits, which have been mined and exported since the 1960s. Magnetite has also been mined in Australia throughout this period, although historically of much lower production volumes (WA Iron Ore profile, 2016). Magnetite offers a source supply of material >66 per cent iron grade product, which is used as premium feed (predominantly pellets) to blast furnaces or specialised steel mills.The Iron Bridge project area contains outcropping magnetite and hematite banded iron formation (BIF), which within the region was recognised as having potential to host economic mineralisation during the 1960s. Development within the project area, however, did not commence until Fortescue Metals Group acquired the tenements based on a 2004 agreement, formed a joint venture with interested groups and then initiated an assessment for magnetite (rather than hematite) mining potential. The combined deposits now have an identified large mineral resource inventory, with test work demonstrating they are able to produce a magnetite concentrate of greater than 66 per cent Fe over an extended mine life. This concentrate would be suitable for forming pellets or feed for direct reduced iron products.The deposits form a singular orebody, approximately 12 km in length by 1 km in width and extending to depths beyond 600 m. The four main deposits are geographically separate and have subtle mineralogical differences, thought driven by the degree of deformation and alteration within each area.Definition of the stratigraphy, structure and key mineralogy of the deposits has been carried out through several stages of exploration and project development. This has also included recent mining and processing of more than 1 Mt of feed material to an on-site processing facility. This demonstrated at a production scale that dry plus wet processing techniques can efficiently separate the magnetite from the gangue minerals to form a suitable (marketable) product.Geometallurgical classification of the host stratigraphy has been carried out from analysing the high volume of quantitative data available for this deposit. This has allowed definition of mappable units within the fresh BIF to be used as a driver in mine scheduling, delivering optimal feed to the processing plant.Construction of mine and processing facilities is expected to commence once all technical risks have been addressed, market conditions are deemed appropriate and approval is given by the joint venture partners.CITATION:Simpson, C, 2017. Development of Underground Gold Processing Plants Underground gold processing plants have potential advantages over traditional surface installations related to a smaller environmental footprint, reduced capital and mining costs, improved security and increased value of the product delivered to surface. The concept of processing gold ores on the surface is the traditional paradigm. A process of pre-concentration of ore underground is likely to result in a major shift in operating costs. In particular, run of mine ore or a large proportion of it will not need to be transported to the surface. As a result, environmental and financial benefits are likely. Underground plants are likely to be pre-concentration systems where the process product is a high-grade concentrate and tailings for stope backfill. Units will be either static or modular. Concentration methods will be gravity and/or flotation or leach based. This paper discusses the development underground gold plants from early concept, through to the world's first operational unit, a newly commissioned unit and the technical basis of a fully modular system.

The Triton lode is a schistose feldspar biotite chlorite rock with quartz, carbonate, pyrite and some pyrrhotite. Its more chloritic sections strongly resemble the enclosing greenstones, its more feldspathic portions are indistinguishable from the flne-grained phases of the porphyry dyke into which the southern extremity of the ore body merges. The ore body' has a length of 880 ft. and an average width of I2t ft.; in places this widens to as much as 30 ft.The average dip is 85° west and pitch of the ore shoot 75° south.METHOD OF SAMPLING.With the exception of a limited amount of channel sampling (a reference to which is made elsewhere in this paper) all the sampling is by chip sample.The samplers use a hammer weighing approximately 11 lb. and chip directly into the sample bags. Sampling is generally carried out over 3-ft. sections and portions thereof to the nearest half foot-thus a face 8t ft. wide is divided up into two sections of 3 ft. each and one section of 2 ft.-no measurements of less than 4 ft. are used and calculations are all in feet and dwt. per long ton.In the oxidised stopes wp.ere the lode is much narrower, .i.e., 6 ft., sampling is over 2-ft. sections. For many years the scrubbing of roaster gas carrying sulphur dioxide has been carried out at the plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. at Risdon, Tasmania, using long horizontal tubes. in which the gas stream crossed a shower of water. In order to provide for increased roaster capacity, it was evident that additional gas scrubbing capacity would be required to prevent pollution of the atmosphere.This provided an opportunity to review the whole operation of gas scrubbing and an investigation was initiated to determine the characteristics of a counter-current type of scrubber. It was hoped that a change to this type of scrubbing would also reduce the sulphur dioxide concentration of the gas delivered to the atmosphere to a negligible amount. This, paper outlines results obtained from an experimental tower which was operated under a wide range of conditions, the packing height, gas flow, water flow, water temperature, and concentration of S02 in inlet gas being varied independently. A description is given of the leading features and operating characteristics of the plant units, which are designed on the basis of the experimental results. Operation of the new scrubbing system commenced on October 5th, 1948.THE PROBLEMThe gas which is handled carries S02 which may vary in concentration from 2% to 5%, and reaches the scrubbing system at a temperature of approximately 180 deg. C. An appreciable amount of suspended material accompanies the gas which has passed the cyclone system.

Tonight it is my privilege to present the 1976 Institute Medal to one of our members, Mr L. C. Brodie-Hall, C.M.G.Laurence Charles Brodie-Hall, as chief executive in Western Australia for Western Mining Corporation Limited (WMC) from 1958 to his retirement in 1975, had a profound influence on the company's growth and development which had a significant influence on the prosperity of the State of Western Australia and, in turn, Australia.Following the company's decision in 1952 to diversify from gold mining, he took a leading part in the exploration and development of the bauxite deposits in the Darling Ranges by a subsidiary company, Western Aluminium N.L., and the subsequent formation of Alcoa of Australia Limited, the development of the first long term export contract for iron ore from Western Australia, the development of the nickel deposits at Kambalda and the subsequent establishment of a nickel refinery and nickel smelter in Western Australia.

Concern exists about the potential release of metals from the proposed mining operation at Martha Hill to the Ohinemuri River. Speculation on possible impacts is fuelled by the dearth of published data on existing metal levels not only for this river system but for streams throughout the Coromandel. At first sight this lack of data is surprising given the apparent interest in this subject and the fact that future mining activity in this region has been a possibility since at least 1979. That such a situation has arisen is not altogether unexpected given the difficulties faced by various organisations, including the mining industry, in determining metal levels which are generally acknowledged to be low. This paper presents data for a number of stations in the vicinity of the proposed operation; it explains the analytical procedures which were adopted and the rationale for them and relates the information which has been obtained to water quality criteria.

Mineral deposits of the central New Guinea region (Gunung Bijih, Ok Tedi, Mount Kare, Porgera, Frieda River) and of southeastern New Guinea (Wau-Edie Creek, Wafi, Hamata, Hidden Valley, Tolukuma, Misima) are associated with hot, forceful intrusions of magma of mantle origin that penetrated thick Precambrian and Palaeozoic continental crust. The interaction of high- temperature melt with continental crust, and the differentiation of melt while in transit through thick crust, may be factors in generating ore. Mineralised intrusives in central New Guinea are a result of Neogene- Quaternary magmatism and were emplaced in a foreland thrust belt environment, a setting similar to the (mineralised) Laramide intrusions of southwestern USA. In both cases, central New Guinea and the Laramide, magmatism is not obviously subduction- related. Mineralised intrusives in south- eastern New Guinea (Wau-Edie Creek, etc.), also, are in a thrust belt setting, and are not obviously subduction-related. The association of. gold in southeastern New Guinea with a second (Pliocene) phase of igneous activity, rather than with earlier (Miocene) activity suggests that re-working by successive intrusions may be a factor in localising ore. This is seen, also, in the Bismarck-Solomon islands region where the richer deposits are associated with later (Pliocene) intrusives rather than with earlier (Eocene-Oligocene) intrusives. Unlike the mainland mineral deposits, those of the Bismarck-Solomon islands are clearly subduction-related.

THE present article makes no claim to be exhaustive, since it cannot contain all the knowledge which scientists and manufacturers of the compounds of the rare earths have gained. The following notes are, therefore, simply an attempt to ascertain andclearly record the occurrence, properties, and uses of the more important of the rare earths, with a special reference to their commercial values and the industries based upon them.HISTORYIt was the mine manager, Gcyer, of Stockholm, who, in 1788, first drew attention to a black mineral which had been found in a quarry near Roslagen, in Sweden. In 1805 Klapproth received some specimens of this mineral, which he declared to be a newmineral. Subsequently Gadolin, professor of chemistry at Abo, analyzed the same mineral, and determined the presence of an unknown earth resembling alumina and lime. He named the mineral ytterbite, and afterwards gadolinite. Klapproth has alsothe merit of having detected (1804) another rare earth, which he named ochroit-earth, found in the Bastnas mine, near Riddarhyttan, in Wcstmannland, Sweden. Although the underground mining environment is arguably safer now than at any time in history, as underground mining operations across the globe increase in-depth, magnitude, and complexity, protecting workers from harm becomes increasingly challenging. In deep, stressed, seismic mines the development face is one of the most hazardous work areas. The active face is usually the furthest extent of the underground workings, so ventilation can be difficult to maintain, exposing workers to high temperature and humidity while working on foot and doing manual labour. While mechanisation has made many tasks easier in modern times, the reality of underground mining is that development charge-up workers still spend long periods directly exposed hazards at the face. In 2019, Orica and Epiroc partnered to co-develop the world’s first fully mechanised development charging unit using fully wireless initiation, called Avatel™. Built on Epiroc’s M2 Boomer carrier platform, the system is designed to allow one person to charge a development face from the safety of a fully enclosed cabin, thereby reducing exposure to hazards at the face. The system was prototyped in Europe before entering commercial introduction in 2022. This paper reviews earlier attempts to mechanise underground charge-up and describes the development journey and engineering challenges of building a mechanised development charging machine.

The kinetics of reduction of copper (cuprous) sulphide with CO-CO2-He gas mixtures, using an excess of CaO(s) as a sulphur-scavenging substance were investigated in the temperature range 855° - 950°C by a thermogravimetric method. Several gas compositions were employed at each temperature. Potential carbon deposition was overcome by preheating the reducing gas mixture. The phase-composition and the morphology of partially reactedsamples were analysed by a SEMlEDAX unit. The reduction rates showed strong dependence on the bulk gas compositions (CO, CO2) and, in most cases, the rate declined with rising temperature. The rate-controlling step appears to be the diffusion of CO2 gaseous species through the micropores of the CaS(s) - product layer which builds up around the CaOcore.

Wattle Gully Gold Mines N.L. of Chewton, Victoria, has decided to replace its present battery plant by a new mill to treat a free milling gold ore, after fine grinding, by concentrating coarse gold in a jig concentrate for amalgamation, and fine free gold and auriferous sulphides in a flotation concentrate for cyanidation. This paper outlines the economic justification and advantages of this step. In a review of the present position at the mine, a history of the company is followed by a description of the ore and its occurrence.Present treatment practice in two separate battery plants is described. Treatment tailings assay 1 dwt/ton gold and a substantial part of this gold is finer than 200 mesh.Experimental work showing how recovery may be improved is discussed and alternative methods of concentrating coarse gold mentioned. It is decided that the most suitable method for recovering gold from the ore is by jig concentration plus flotation.The merits of various flowsheets incorporating these techniques in the existing plant and in a new plant are assessed. It is concluded that there is no advantage in extending or converting the existing two battery plants, and it would be more economical and satisfactory to build a new plant.An economic study shows that for a capital expenditure of £120,000 a new plant could be erected to treat 70,000 tons p.a., working a 5-day week, and return an additional 14.2/- per ton, or £50,000 p.a., in revenue over the existing plant. It is estimated the plant cost can therefore be recouped out of savings inside three years. Probable ore reserves are sufficient to cover this period and additional ore will certainly be developed.INTRODUCTIQNSince 1934, Wattle Gully Gold Mines N.L. has been mining a lode gold ore at Chewton, near Castleniaine, and treating it by stamp milling and plate amalgamation, plus table concentration of auriferous sulphides. The Waihi-Waitekauri region hosts numerous low-sulfidation epithermal deposits that both outcrop and occur at depth. Zones of intense hydrothermal alteration enclose the Au-Ag bearing quartz vein deposits. Hydrothermal alteration includes the destruction of magnetite by hydrothermal fluids, pervasive silicification adjacent to quartz lodes and potassium enrichment due to adularia and illite deposition. High-resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric, and new gravity data delineate distinct geophysical anomalies associated with hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation. Five magnetically quiet zones occur in the region varying in size from 3 to 34 km2 and in geometry from circular to irregular zones. These zones represent the near-surface extent of strong to intense hydrothermal alteration associated with fossil geothermal systems. All epithermal deposits in the region occur in magnetically quiet zones. Over 120 new gravity stations together with existing data across the Waihi district have defined a positive Bouguer gravity anomaly coincident with the magnetically quiet zone. Eastern and western gradients of 50 gu/km bound the anomaly that contains two flat gravity highs west and east of the Waihi deposit. Strong potassium signatures in airborne radiometric data correlate with outcropping zones of alteration and are consistent with the presence of adularia and illite minerals. Hydrothermally altered zones are represented by areas of low Th/K ratios as a result of low thorium concentrations in andesite and elevated potassium levels in altered zones.

THE power requirements of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company at Queenstown, Tasmania, have, since the inception of smelting operations in June) 1896, been derived continuously from the extensive forests in the watershed of the Queen River, adjacent to the works, the fuewoodbeing of good quality, mainly composed of myrtle or beech (Fagus Ounninghami), eucalypts, and manuka (Leptospermum ericoides). The country is very rugged and mountainous, indented by numerous ravines and gullies, and intersected by, many creeks, which are subject to periodical floods, under the influence of a heavy and persistent rainfall, which averages about 110 in per annum. The areas so far exploited aggregate a total of about42 square miles, and this denuded country gives promise of ultimately becoming very valuable pastoral ground for cattle-raising. The tonnage of wood yielded per acre varies from 40 to 100 tons on stack measurement of 80 cubic feet per ton, 60 tons per acre being considered a good average yield. The gross amount...

A comparatively new and very promIsmg field for applying cemented tungsten-carbides is in the mining and quarrying industries. The economic advantages of this unique engineering material over the conventional hollow drill steel, or steel detachable bits, have proven so great that the use of "hard metals" promises, in some instances, to revolutionise the drilling of all manner of minerals. Early in the war years the Germans realised the tremendous advantages cemented carbides offered for holing hard rocks, and they proceeded to develop detachable percussion bits to do this work, at the same time evolving fast, comparatively light-hitting driliing machines, especially designed to suit the mechanical properties of the carbide.Here in Australia also, it has appeared that the detachable percussion bit offers the greatest economic benefits to consumers, although the author is well aware that carbide-tipped drill rods have, and may continue to work out satisfactorily in certain mines and quarries.Most drilling equipment at present installed in Australia may be described as being of the heavy hard-hitting variety, so that the designer of an efficient percussion bit has to take special precautions to overcome the problem of fatigue, and to ensure that the inserts are securely mounted in the body with the minimum of internal stress in the carbide.
