This paper reviews the annual status of the New Zealand mining industry (metallic minerals and coal) including key aspects such as mineral production, mineral exploration expenditure, commodity price trends, key industry players, market activity and other significant commercial factors.   Strong commodity prices during 2006 have been underpinned by a number of key factors including US dollar weakness and emerging market demand, particularly from countries such as China and India. In real terms commodity prices have recovered significantly since 2002 and are currently at 20-year highs.   New Zealand exploration spending on metallic minerals (predominantly gold) is at a 15 year high driven by rising global commodity prices. New Zealand gold production in 2006 was about 340,000 oz and is expected to grow in 2007 as new mines at Frasers and Globe-Progress (Oceania Gold) and Favona (Newmont) come on stream. Gold production broadly lags 10 years behind exploration spending and exploration activity over the last five years remains well below that seen in the early 1980Æs. Expenditure on coal exploration shows a similar trend with strong growth from a low base over the last five years, reaching over $11 M in 2006. Total coal production in 2006 was 5.9 Mt, an increase of 10% on 2005 with imports from Indonesia adding a further $1.1 Mt.   Newmont and Oceana Gold are by far the largest public gold mining companies operating in New Zealand, although only Oceana Gold maintains a presence on the local stock exchange. Other metals explorers with New Zealand projects include a range of public-listed Juniors (market capitalisation less than NZ$50m) domiciled largely in New Zealand, Australia and/or Canada. Capital-raising on public markets directed towards New Zealand exploration is estimated at around NZ$12 M for 2006, the bulk of this coming via Glass EarthÆs NZ$10 M IPO on the NZAX in October.   The New Zealand Coal sector is dominated by the state-owned enterprise Solid Energy with around 80% market share by production. Other domestic coal competition remains limited, and includes the L&M Group, Pike River Coal, Eastern Corporation, and New Vale (acquired by Solid Energy in 2007). Pricing parity comes mainly from imported coal and global thermal coal prices have remained strong during 2006 at around US$45-55/t, driven by continued expansion in Chinese demand. Coking coal prices have eased 16% since 2005 to around US$98/t in 2007.   Although recent increases in exploration spending suggest a renaissance in the New Zealand minerals sector, long-run trends indicate that we have simply rebounded from a low base over the last five years and much work is still to be done to stimulate further growth in the mining industry to maintain minerals production at current levels. Key industry challenges include marketing exploration opportunities to local and overseas investors, building a critical mass of NZX-listed explorers and providing an internationally competitive environment to attract further capital and expertise.

Studies have been carried out on the dead roasting of a copper-iron and a copper-nickel-iron sulfide concentrate, followed by segregation roasting with coal and leaching with either curpric sulfate in aqueous acetonitrile or cupric chloride in brine solution to preferentially solubilize copper. The effect of dead roasting and segregation roasting conditions on the overall leaching of copper and the separation of copper from iron and iron and nickel is reported. An excellent separation of copper from iron and a good separation of copper from iron and nickel can be obtained provided sulfur is removed to 0.5 per cent or less during the dead roast and provided the coal addition and temperature of the segregation roast are near the minima required for the segregation of copper.

The Grasberg block cave rail haulage system will be located in the Grasberg mining district on the island of Papua, Indonesia at an elevation of almost 3000 m above sea level. It will transport 160 000 t of ore per day from multiple chute galleries to the underground crushing systems. The design entails approximately 23 km of rail (ballasted and embedded track), over 120 ore chutes to deliver ore to the muck cars and three unloading stations to deliver ore to the crushers. The rail haulage system is a closed-loop system entirely within the underground mining complex.The GBC rail haulage project will be a substantial operation. Trains consist of 11–12 bottom-dump 20 m3 muck cars driven by a 40 t electric locomotive, about 400 t per trainload. Approximately 12 trains and one spare are required to maintain full production at 160 000 t/d. All rail installations will be 1435 mm (standard) gauge with AS60 steel.The rail system is designed to operate in full automated mode, including chute loading, hauling and dumping. The operation will be controlled from a surface control room.The rail haulage project has been divided into five stages, which will be brought online over the course of ten years. Current development and construction are focused on Stage 1 for initial production that will occur beginning in late 2017. This stage includes 24 chutes in three chute galleries, one unloading station, workshop areas and almost 7 km of track (3 km of embedded and 4 km of ballast).This paper describes the key components of the rail haulage system and reports on the current status of development and construction of the system. Laboratory-Scale Magnetohydrostatic Separator for High Resolution Density Analysis of Plastic and Other Wastes Recycling and reuse of different plastic wastes is still a current problem to solve for process engineers and it is true for seeking industrial applications as well as for smaller laboratory-scale, where a given waste sample, plastic or even metallic, has to be precisely separated into narrow density fractions to gain data for industrial design or for scientific research. The principle of magnetohydrostatic separators are known even there are industrial size machines but our primary aim was the development of a laboratory-scale separator for analysis of particles of densities up to 6 kg/L and sizes up to 8 mm. Main parts of the built experimental equipment are the ferrite core with two high power coils. The shape of the ferrite core at the two sides of the separator channel was specially designed to produce isodynamic magnetic field. In these places the ferrite core was constructed from laser cut ferrite sheets. The development of the high power electric supply for the two coils was a real challenge because the high voltage and current (400 V, 30 A) and because it had to be precisely regulated for being able to set discrete relative forces on the particles. Two separator channels were made from transparent plastic. The magnetic fluid is circulated by a centrifugal pump, fresh feed is supplied by a vibrated feeder and products can be taken by built in samplers. The velocity profile in the separator channel is measured by an ultrasonic Doppler velocity meter. Paper reports about the development and itself of the magnetohydrostatic separator and about some fundamental and applied laboratory experiments with different reference particles and wastes from used cars and electrical appliances.

The following paper deals with a method for the" Proximate Analysis" of Chloridized Ores, which are free from arsenic, antimony and lime. When these are present the analysis is rendered far more complicated, and many of the methods which I am about to describe could not be applied. Sufficient scope is therefore offered for discussing the analysis, when these metals are present, in a separate paper, which I hope to contribute at a future date.I am fully aware that this method is far from being perfect. No doubt many, modifications and improvements will suggest themselves to my readers, and I trust that this paper will be the means of giving a certain impetus to the study of Proximate Analysis which at the present time is practically dormant. For the benefit of my readers who are not initiated into the details of ordinary estimations, I have briefly described well known methods, which, however, will be found fully described in most text-books of analysis. Assuming that the ore contains. sulphates and chlorides of soda and magnesia, sulphates, sulphides, chlorides and oxides of copper, lead, iron, zinc, manganese and silver chloride, the analysis would be conducted as follows. Mineral-deposit geology, geochemical processes, and biogeochemical processes are fundamental controls on the environmental conditions that exist naturally in mineralised areas prior to mining, and that result from mining and mineral processing. Input from economic geologists and geochemists is therefore crucial to effectively predict, assess, mitigate, and remediate the environmental effects of mineral-resource development. Recent open pit gold mining at Summitville, Colorado , has received intense public scrutiny for a variety of environmental problems, most important of which has been extreme acid drainage. Now a Superfund environmental cleanup site, Summitville exemplifies how economic geology and geochemistry principles: 1. could have been better utilized to first predict and minimise the environmental problems, and 2. can now be used to optimize the environmental cleanup.

When zinc is electrowon from concentrates or residues of high manganese content, the zinc sulphate electrolyte may contain high levels of manganese. The manganese level is usually controlled by removal of manganese at the anode as the dioxide during the zinc electrodeposition stage.By increasing the temperature of an electrolyte containing 8 gll manganese from 35°C to 90°C, decreasing the acidity from 100 gll to 30 gll, reducing the current density from 432.A.m-2 t6 286 A.m-2 and using new lead anodes containing over 0·75 per cent silver, the current efficiency for manganese dioxide removal was .increased from less than 1 per cent to over 20 per cent.At the same time the current efficiency for zinc deposition was maintained above 90 per cent by additions of high molecular weight cationic polyacrylamides to the cell. By utilization of these conditions in a small number of cells, the manganese level in the circuit could be economically concrolled to any desired level.With these conditions the formation of the dioxide changes from an indirect route, via Mn04-, to a direct oxidation of Mn2+ to Mn02.The incorporation of impurities such as Pb, K, NH4, Cu, Ni, or Fe makes the deposit unsatisfactory for direct use in Zn - Mn02 dry cells. The deposit structure changes from cryptomelane at low temperature to y3-Mn02 at high temperature.

The epithermal Au-Ag deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield have formed in the convergent plate margin setting of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The deposits form as siliceous lodes in the upper parts of geothermal systems associated with andesitic and rhyolitic volcanism. Two types of low sulphidation epithermal mineralisation are recognised in these volcanic terranes. Vein deposits within the rhyolitic terrane in the east and south of the CVZ (Whitianga Province) are typified by Chalcedonic Silica-Adularia-Illite type mineralisation. The veins are hosted by both rhyolite-dacite volcanic rocks and the underlying andesitic basement. The mineralisation formed by episodic violent decompressional boiling of deeply circulating meteoric water, with some magmatic fluid contribution; this boiling was associated with hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions in geothermal systems where the piezometric surface of the deep geothermal reservoir lay near-surface. Such episodic boiling provides chalcedonic veining, banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S gas from the fluid to cause major gold deposition.   Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia-Kaolinite) type mineralisation is widespread in the andesitic terrane forming the northern and western portions of the CVZ (Kuaotunu Province). There is a spatial association with weak mineralisation of the high sulphidation (Vuggy Silica-Alunite-Kaolinite-Illite) epithermal type and porphyry eu-Au type. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably formed by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwaters with the ascending deep geothermal fluid in geothermal systems beneath andesitic stratovolcanoes. The piezometric surface to the deep geothermal reservoir in these systems is likely to lie at considerable depth, with acidic gases rising from the geothermal reservoir condensing within the overlying vadose zone. The cooling effect, oxidation and pH decrease accompanying mixing apparently overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of gold. A high level of base-metal sulphide precipitation also enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling of the mixing fluids may occur at local structural dilation sites, producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

The Stawell Goldfield, the westernmost of the main Victorian fields, has produced over a million and a quarter ounces of gold from one and three-quarter million tons of ore. The lodes are quartz reefs and sulphide bodies occurring in sediments of lower Ordovician or upper Cambrian age. The lodes are confined to a relatively narrow suite of weak rocks lying between stronger ones above and below and there is a definite relationship between fold structure, pitch and strength of folding and ore.LOCATION HISTORY AND PAST PRODUCTIONThe town of Stawell, situated 150 miles north-westerly from Melbourne on the main railway and road to Adelaide, is the most westerly of the main gold areas of Victoria. Alluvial gold was found at Pleasant Creek (now Stawell West) in 1853 and the usual "rush" followed. Numerous alluvial leads, some surface, others buried under up to 100 ft. of Tertiary sediments were worked. The alluvial gold was soon exhausted, but in 1857 gold-bearing reefs were found on the slopes of a prominent ridge on the northern edgeof the present town. Early reef mining was by small working parties mining to shallow depths only and treating their ore at public crushing plants. Some of the early returns were very high grade. The next stage was the amalgamation of claims and the formation of companies, with their own treatment plants. This stage continued till the last mine closed in 1921. These companies had, by present standards, small holdings and far too many shafts were sunk, resulting in less efficient prospecting and operation.Since 1921 there have been one or two small scale attempts to revive mining but without success. This method determines tellurium at concentrations down to 0·01 p.p.m., with geochemical accuracy. Tellurium is volatilized from the rock at 800°C in the presence of sulphur from decomposing pyrite, condensed, dissolved, and finally determined by atomic absorption in a long tube burner. The distribution of Te is shown near some gold lodes at Kalgoorlie. Lastly, a method of synthesizing Te-free pyrite from sulphur and ferrous sulphate is described.

The design of a mine should aim to optimise the market value by maximising revenues whilst minimising costs. In open pit mining, the nature of the extraction technique translates this objective into the maximum recovery of reserves while minimising waste extraction subject to technical, economical and safety constraints. Since the introduction by Lerchs and Grossman, in 1965, of a model that is now considered a classic in the area, open pit design has reached a level of maturity and acceptance by industry. These models are being used on a regular basis by designers and planners.This paper proposes a new alternative model for open pit design. It is based on genetic algorithms (GA) and exploits a reduction of the number of decision variables of the more traditional techniques. The novel approach provides more flexibility than traditional models; it can also be extended to consider planning problems that traditional open pit design models are not capable of handling. The algorithm has been designed for two dimensional problems and tested in a simple instance. The results obtained in this simple test are encouraging and are a good supporting argument for the development of a GA model capable of handling three-dimensional (3D) instances. The model presented in this paper is just a first step towards a full GA to solve the pit design problem and it is believed that novel tools like the one presented herein could become great allies in tackling challenging problems in open pit design, an illustration of such a challenging problem is presented and discussed.

Further evidence is presented as to the widespread occurrence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in nature in association with sulphide minerals. Leaching rates are discussed in terms of the effect of environmental parameters, particularly Eh and pH, on the bacterial process.The methods used to investigate leaching phenomena are described and the advantages and limitations of each method are discussed. A theoretical treatment of the bacterial leaching process is given which indicates that the optimum conditions arrived at by traditional methods are compatible with those deduced from consideration of the mathematics of continuous culture and thermodynamics

Coal seam gas (CSG) exploration and development requires the abstraction of significant amounts of water. This is so because gas desorbtion in coal seams takes place only after aquifer pressure has been reduced by prolonged pumping of aquifer water. CSG waters have a specific geochemical signature which is a product of their formation process. These waters have high bicarbonate, high sodium, low calcium, low magnesium, and very low sulphate concentrations. Additionally, chloride concentrations may be high depending on the coal depositional environment. This particular signature is not only useful for exploration purposes, but it also highlights potential environmental issues that can arise as a consequence of CSG water disposal. Since 2002 L&M Coal Seam Gas Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd, have been involved in exploration and development of CSG in New Zealand. Anticipating disposal of CSG waters as a key issue in CSG development, they have been assessing CSG water quality along with exploration work. Coal seam gas water samples from an exploration well in Maramarua closely follow the geochemical signature associated with CSG waters. This has helped to identify CSG potential, while at the same time assessing the chemical characteristics and water generation processes in the aquifer. Neutral pH and high alkalinity suggest that these waters could be easily managed once the sodium and chloride concentrations are reduced to acceptable levels.

This paper describes the results of VLF-EM test surveys, using the Ronka EM-16 equipment, over a selection of environments in Australia and Papua.Using comparisons with known geology, drilling information and other geophysical work it is shown that the maximum depth of penetration of the method is about 100 ft but is considerably less than this in most areas.The author believes the method could aid in geological mapping and provide a useful adjunct to aeromagnetic surveying in some areas.

Cracow is a high-grade; low-tonnage underground gold mine located approximately 500 km north-west of Brisbane in Central Queensland. It is a steeply dipping, narrow vein, epithermal gold and silver deposit that is accessed via a decline from surface. Cracow is owned by joint venture between Newcrest Mining (70 per cent) and Sedimentary Holdings (30 per cent). The orebodies are 5 m wide on average and the ore is extracted via sublevel open bench stoping. Stopes are extracted to a strike of approximately 25 m before being backfilled with waste. Prior to the introduction of electronics, the mine would remove a small amount of the previous backfill out to create a void, and then begin blasting two to three rings at a time, with the ore being extracted between each blast. This method caused the ore to be blasted onto the waste backfill resulting in dilution of the high-grade ore. It also meant that the extraction of each stope took a number of weeks and numerous blasting events. In the fourth quarter of 2005, the mine struck a geotechnically sensitive stope, where all 20 rings had to be extracted in a single shot or risk possible geotechnical problems that could sterilise the ore. Due to the limitations of NONEL« delay detonators the mine could not fire all the rings in a single shot and needed to use an electronic detonator system to extract the stope. Some unexpected benefits to the mine were increased fragmentation, reduced vibrations, reduced dilution, improved efficiency and improved hanging wall and footwall conditions. After the success of this first electronic shot, the mine has since moved to firing all their stopes with electronic detonators. With electronics the mine has been able to fire much larger blasts, and has in fact moved to firing their blasts in the opposite direction, firing towards the draw point instead of into the waste backfill, thus reducing ore dilution.

The Kisladag Mine, Turkey, is a large porphyry gold deposit which is mined by open pit methods. In operation for over ten years, Kisladag provides an excellent example of how attention to a geologic feature, namely hydrothermal alteration, became a very effective predictive geological tool for planning and operation. The alteration domains were initially used as a geological tool to assist with establishment of resource model domains and to guide delineation drilling, but they were soon recognised to be correlative to geotechnical characteristics (affecting pit slope angles) and metallurgical performance (heap leach recoveries). Recent developments in spectral processing allow the systematic quantification of complex overlapping alteration phases and have greatly improved the ability to rapidly define internally consistent alteration domains for geotechnical and geometallurgical purposes.Alteration at Kisladag comprises a central core potassic (K-feldspar-biotite) zone, a tourmaline-white mica enveloping zone, an advanced argillic lithocap on the deposit’s eastern side and an overprinting pervasive argillic zone. These alteration zones and their distribution were based initially on strictly qualitative, visual mineralogical logging of diamond drill core. With the need for more accurate and consistent identification of the alteration mineral suites, particularly the phyllosilicate phases, logging was augmented by systematic measurement of spectral data using a Terraspec instrument.Recently the Kisladag spectral database (over 85 000 readings) was reprocessed by the newly developed methodology (aiSIRIS™) that allows relative quantification of the spectrally-responsive minerals. Visualising this transformed spectral mineralogy at various mineral concentration thresholds using implicit modelling software (Leapfrog®) led to the creation of consistent mineralogical and alteration domains that are used for the definition of geotechnical and geometallurgical parameters. Obviously, the paramount advantages of contract mining have been recognised by mine developers throughout Australia, as evidenced by surface gold mining operations of significant output almost exclusively being performed under contract. These paramount advantages of using an experienced professionally managed contractor result from the mine developer being freed from financing the required relatively large capital expenditure at current relatively high interest rates or in a capital scarce stock market, and from the need to recruit and sustain a large operating work force in a competitive labour market.

The greater part of this paper comprises the material used in a lecture delivered to the South Queensland Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in September, 1949. It contains little in the way of original matter, its main purpose being to call attention to the need for research into the properties of Queensland coals and to indicate some of the lines such investigations might profitably follow.Since the lecture was given the Powell Duffryn (1949) 1 report, which has made an excellent start along these lines, has been printed. This report is, however, only a beginning, though a big one, and there is ample room for many years of work along similar lines.The paper is based largely on the work of de Jersey (1946, 1949)2,3,4,5 and Jones and de Jersey (1947)6, but these workers in turn owe a debt to the work of many British and American investigators, too many to enumerate.
