Coal dust explosions still remain the main hazard in the coal mining sector, notwithstanding their relatively wide recognition compared to other hazards and the development of effective methods of prevention. Coal dust explosions are still the cause of numerous catastrophes, often leading to fatalities. Fortunately, they rarely occur, and it is for this reason that their hazardous impact is often underestimated. This problem in Poland is being exclusively solved by the Central Mining Institute, Experimental Mine Barbara. Here, basic research on the phenomenon of coal dust explosions and prevention methods is carried out, as well as investigations into the causes and circumstances of past accidents. After 15 years of no coal dust explosion accidents in Poland (1987?2002), a few coal dust explosions have recently occurred, with tragic consequences. These events have taken place not only in hard coal mines, where the presence of dangerous coal dust is the result of common production cycle, and safety measures against coal dust explosions are subject to specific regulations, but also in coal-fired power plants. This is of special concern because prior to 1987, such accidents had been been reported only for coal mines and not for coal-fired power plants. In recent years, two dust explosions occurred in Polish power facilities: the Dolna Odra and Turow power plants. In both cases, coal dust explosions occurred in the fuel supply system, but biomass dust was also involved. The explosions caused significant damage to the systems and buildings. This paper gives description and schematics of the regions of catastrophic coal dust explosions that have occurred in recent years in Poland, as well as the results of post-accident investigations, presenting the coal dust explosion hazard at the accident scene The results specify in detail the state of safety measures against coal dust explosions in light of the relevant regulations in force, including amount of deposited coal dust, content of incombustible matter in coal dust, free moisture content in coal dust, state of coal dust explosion safety zones, and state of explosion barriers. The conclusions from the site inspection and post-accident investigations presented enable us to determine locations of explosion initiation, probable ignition sources, range of explosion flames, and explosion barrier performance. A complete elimination of coal dust explosion hazard at the site of dust deposition is practically impossible to achieve. Similarly, a total elimination of ignition source, which may be related to the occurrence of other natural hazards, equipment malfunction or human errors, is impossible. The examples of tragic events that took place in Polish coal mines and coal-fired power plants highlight shortcomings and mistakes made in terms of assessment and prevention measures taken against the coal dust explosion hazard.

"Corrosion of underground support measures constitutes a concern to industry in both safety and economic terms. It also represents a potential market for corrosion resistant materials such as stainless steel.In order to assess the market potential for a stainless steel friction rock bolt, a review of current corrosion processes and remedial or preventative measures in the underground environment was undertaken. This was supplemented by distribution to industry of a detailed questionnaire, concerning the magnitude and extent of support corrosion and the costs of current support measures, and by visits to selected sites. Following data synthesis, support costs were established and the economic benefit of stainless steel rock bolts evaluated.Stainless steel rock bolts can be an effective cost reducing measure in unscreened areas requiring frequent reconditioning. Their benefit is rapidly diminished, however, if only partial reconditioning is required, the reconditioning interval is long or if screening is required.While most industry personnel are receptive to the application of stainless steel support measures, the localization of corrosion problems and the potential high cost of this type of support are barriers to its widespread implementation. They have potential for use in extreme environments. However, this relatively small market may not be economically viable.IntroductionFriction rock bolts are the simplest of all interior rock fixtures. The friction resistance to sliding of the rock on the bolt is generated by a radial pressure against the borehole wall over the length of the bolt. Two types of friction rock bolts are currently marketed, the Split Set and the Swellex.Unlike conventional point anchor bolts, friction rock stabilizers may move relative to the rock strata and maintain their capacity even if rock shifts, a condition that sometimes loosens or breaks conventional bolts. Ease of installation, effectiveness in jointed as well as weaker rock, and the possibility of having relatively long bolts are a few of the many advantages which generate considerable interest in the application of friction rock bolts (Wijk and Skogberg, 1982). However, due to their thin-walled construction and large surface area, frictional rock stabilizers are more susceptible than conventional bolts to damage by corrosion. For this reason, they are normally not recommended for long-term use (Jolly and Neumeier, 1987).In light of the above discussion; the Nickel Development Institute commissioned a study by the Geomechanics Research Centre with the objective of generating a credible database for the assessment of the feasibility of a stainless steel friction bolt system in corrosive ground and mine environments."

The resource quantity of the low rank coalbed methane (CBM) accounts for 47% of the total resource quantity of CBM in China. Compared with the exploration and development of the high rank CBM in Qinshui Basin, China and the low rank CBM in Powder River Basin, USA and Albert Basin, Canada, the exploration and development of the low rank CBM are still in the initial test stage. In this paper, on the basis of analyzing the mining geological conditions such as that the Huanglong Jurassic Coalfield is largely situated in the hills and gullies zones, and the coal reservoir has the features such as the low metamorphic degree, large coal seam thickness, simple coal matrix texture, high permeability and small CBM content and so on, it discusses the key technologies such as the development pattern of CBM, well location arrangement, drilling and well completion technology and fracturing technology and so on. It indicates that the underbalanced drilling and the cavity well completion based on the reservoir protection will be the development directions of the CBM development technology in this area.

Palabora Mining Copper (PMC) has two autogenous mills that have been in operation since 1976. The mills were originally designed to treat 30 000 t/d of open cast copper ore in a closed circuit with cyclones. As the ore body went deeper the open cast method of mining was changed to block caving, a consequence of this was the dolerite content (hardest barren material) increased significantly, increasing the production rate of pebbles and thus reducing the milling capacity. In order to cope with the increased ore hardness and to increase mill capacity, a second ball milling stage and pebble crushing were incorporated to the circuit. The above actions created new challenges to the circuit operation and bottlenecks in different areas of the milling circuit. This paper reports the holistic work performed on the Palabora autogenous milling circuit including the implementation of a mill constraint control scheme, the implementation of a pebble removal system from the circuit and a new circuit configuration. The achieved plant stability and increment of ore throughput are also reported in this paper.

"The management of acid rock drainage( ARD) to prevent impact when tailings are disposed of in the environment requires understanding of the phenomena giving rise to acidic drainage, a rigorous evaluation of the weathering characteristics of the tailings, and the successful implementation of control measures that will be effective in the long term. This paper provides a brief theoretical background to the complex reactions taking place in mill tailings containing residual sulfide minerals which must be appreciated to enable waste characterization program to be effective in predicting the future behavior of the tailings and in designing control methods which will work. "The O'Brien mine is in the west-central part of Cadillac township along the Cadillac 'break', which extends for 7,500 feet from west to east across the property.The ground was staked in 1924 by A. Dumont and W. Hermeston, prospecting for M. J. O'Brien, Limited. The first vein discovered is that now known as No. 1. The No. 4 vein was later exposed on the surface; the other veins known to be present were revealed by underground work and diamond drilling carried out both from the surface and underground.The mine is developed from three vertical shafts: No .. 2 extending from the surface to 2,000 feet; No. 3 from the surface to 1,500 feet; and No. 4 from 2,000 to 3,000 feet. There is on the property a mill of about 200 tons a day capacity, the usual shops, and a townsite housing about forty-five families. Gold production to the end of September, 1944, amounted to 295,824 fine oz. from ore having an average grade of 0.505 oz. a ton. In addition, the mill recovered 3,237 tons of arsenic trioxide having a purity of 83 per cent As2O3.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe four main groups of rocks of the Cadillac area- the Cadillac, Blake River, Kewagama or Pontiac, and Malartic- are found within the boundaries of the property. However, as these rocks have been fully described in · various government reports (1,2,3,4,5,6) and all the known orebodies occur within one group- the Blake River-a detailed description of the geology will be dispensed with here. The known ore deposits lie south of the Cadillac 'break' in a group of rocks that includes 'greenstones', greywackes, conglomerate, porphyries, and a rock of gabbroic composition that may be intrusive. Both flows and tuffs can be recognized in the 'greenstones'. The two bands of porphyry that trend easterly across most of the property have been considered by some observers to be dyke rocks and by others to be flows. Certain evidence points to their being dykes that were intruded as sills considerably prior to the emplacement of the gold-bearing veins, but the possibility of flow origin cannot be fully rejected. North of the talc-chlorite-carbonate schist zone forming the 'break' the rocks are conglomerate and greywacke with iron formation, in which there are no known veins of ore grade. Within the schist zone are minor acid and basic intrusives. The general trend of both bedding and schistosity is a few degrees south of east. The dip is generally vertica1 or steep to the south."

ABSTRACT: The Victor diamond mine is located in the James Bay lowlands, 90 km west of the First Nations village of Attawapiskat. The project was the first of its kind in northern Ontario. The process plant was designed to produce a 95 to 98% by weight diamond concentrate through three stages of comminution, dense medium separation, and proprietary X-ray technology for final recovery. The plant was commissioned over a period of six months, commencing prior to substantial completion of construction. Through effective planning of the commissioning phase, the Victor mine start-up was safely completed nine months ahead of schedule.

"Equity Silver Mines Limited owns and operates an open pit silver 111ine located 37 km southeast of Houston in the Omineca District of British Columbia, Figure l. The property is approximately 300 km west of Prince George and 417 km east of the Port of Prince Rupert. This is the largest silver mine in Canada and one of the five largest silver producers in the western world.Equity is a subsidiary of Placer Development Limited, which owns 70 of Equity's issued and outstanding Common Shares. Placer was responsible for financing and developing the property and now provides general management and administrative services.All mining is by open pit methods, using three 1600 P&H shovels, eight 45 t Caterpillar and three 77 t Wabco trucks, three 40R rotary drills, two D8 dozers, one 9888 front-end loader and other ancillary equipment. We are now phasing out the Southern Tail pit and bringing the Main Zone into productior; see Figure 2.Comminution in the concentrator is achieved via primary, secondary, and tertiary crushers followed by rod and ball mills. The flotation circuit, with Southern Tail ore, produces a concentrate containing between 3 000 and 6 500 g of silver per tonne, 201 copper, and 25 g of gold per tonne. Running Main Zone ore, concentrate grades will decrease to about 4 500 g of silver per tonne, 17% copper, and 18 g of gold per tonne. Design milling capacity is 5 300 tpd, which is often exceeded.The flotation concentrate contains relatively high levels of antimony and arsenic. Because of these impurities Equity was unable to obtain economically acceptable long-term sales contracts for flotation concentrate. For this reason a leaching process was developed, and a plant designed, built and placed in operation. Due to the complex and unique technology involved, many start-up problems were encountered but by March 1983 the leach plant was considered ""fully operational."" This paper describes some of our progress and problems in bringing the Equity leach plant through its start-up period."

Historic medical isotope production at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) in Chalk River involved the dissolution of irradiated isotope targets prior to extraction of Mo-99. This process generated liquid waste that was cemented in 5-gallon containers and transferred to an outdoor waste-management facility for intermediate storage. Research was undertaken to develop an innovative method for uranium, mercury and cesium recovery from the radioactive cemented waste (RCW). Regulations prohibit the removal of active radioactive waste from the Chalk River facility. Thus, CanmetMINING produced surrogate material following the same procedures and conditions to those used at CNL. The selective recovery of the uranium from the surrogate radioactive cemented waste (SRCW) could offer CNL more disposition options for the resulting wastes. Leaching tests were performed using four different SRCW at 1 kg scale. Different conditions, operating parameters, and the presence of plastic and corrosion products were evaluated on solubilization. The research investigated the use of potassium iodide with the sulphuric acid leach to increase metals recovery. Iodine improves the solubilisation of metals and the U dissolution reached 99%. The increase of leaching time reduces the U solubilization due to silica gel formation. Therefore, it will be important to control leaching time to avoid the loss of U during the pilot scale experiments. For Hg, the solubilization ranged from 60 to 80% due to the presence of metallic mercury and mercury sulphide found in SRCW cured at 60°C and/or aged for 30 months. Ion exchange (IX) was found the best method to separate the uranium from the impurities and produce a purified and concentrated uranium solution suitable for yielding a uranium product (yellow cake).

"Fractures and fracture zones containing veins and stringers of auriferous quartz in a quartz porphyry dyke are the principal structural features at the Howey and Hasaga gold mines. The 'break' containing the dyke was produced by a force from the northwest, the fractures in the dyke by compressive stress from the west.Both mines are in the north-central part of Heyson township, in the Red Lake area. They lie close to the southeastern side of the Dome granite stock. The Howey mine exhausted its ore reserves and ceased operations in November 1941. The Hasaga mine is producing at the present time (June, 1946).Mineralization was first discovered in the dyke in 1925 by the Howey brothers. Lorne Howey's discovery, which became the Howey mine, came into production in April, 1930; Ray Howey's find, which is now the Hasaga mine, started production in November, 1938.The total production from the Howey mine was 421,324 oz. gold and 144,253 oz. silver from 5,158,376 tons of ore hoisted ( 4,319,331 tons milled) during its 11 years of operation.The total production from the Hasaga mine from November, 1938, to December 31, 1945, was 124,434 oz. gold and 51,009 oz. silver from a total of 901,098 tons hoisted (721,361 tons milled).GENERAL GEOLOGYThe porphyry dyke containing the orebodies at the Howey and Hasaga mines lies a short distance southeast of the contact of a granite-granodiorite mass known as the Dome stock. The dyke fills a fracture trending N.65°E. in a tongue of Keewatin volcanic breccia that extends in a rather irregular manner into an elongate intrusive stock of dioritic rock known as the Howey diorite. The accompanying table presents the geological succession."

Cemented Paste Backfill has proven to be of critical importance to the operation of a number of Canadian mines, primarily due to the rapid backfilling rate this method permits. In order to improve the efficiency of this backfill system (i.e. optimize binder contents, fill fence design, and the employment of two stage filling strategies) there is a requirement to better understand its geomechanical behaviour. In response, in-situ experiments have been conducted in long-hole stopes to quantify the evolution of total earth pressures and pore pressures at a series of instrumented points within both the core of the backfill and close to fill fences. The deflection of fill fences as a result of paste loading has been measured and additional instrumentation has also been employed to measure cement hydration, negative pore pressures, and blasting induced vibrations within fresh and cured paste backfill. Installing geotechnical instrumentation within an open long-hole stope can be an extremely complex procedure and this paper details the methods that have been successfully employed. Preliminary results are presented, and the pressures induced by backfill with differing binder contents, at a number of different in-stope locations are considered.

"Concurrent with the continuing demise of many Canadian mining towns is the rise of a new method of providing remote mine sites with a workforce. This is the Long Distance Commute (LDC) which uses commuter labour and requires no permanent settlements to support the mine operation. It provides a flexible and cost effective method of operation to the industry and relieves both governments and industry of the expense of building and maintaining mining towns. However, little attention has been paid to the effect on workers or their families of the LDC work schedule whereby workers spend a fixed number of days at the site followed by a fixed number of days at home. Off-shore oil rig experience would indicate that negative social impacts may be expected. Research leading to an understanding of the problems involved seems to be indicated. One innovative suggestion has been to use already established but dying mining towns as workforce pick-up points for new LDC operations further north.BackgroundUntil recently, mine towns were considered as a necessary component of mine development. This was a natural symbiosis resulting from the need to provide workforce accommodation close to isolated mine sites. The early mine communities in Canada were often just a huddle of shacks around a head frame. Gradually mining companies began to provide housing which varied from basic duplexes and quads in grid pattern layout to professionally planned and designed towns, either model company towns or the more recent suburbs-in-the-bush, the so-called ""instant towns"" of the postWorld War II era of resource development. The improvement in accommodation reflected the need to attract a stable workforce as mine operations became more sophisticated. City amenities were expected and offered in these mine towns as a way of encouraging a permanent community of mining families. Indeed in towns like Manitouwdage, Schefferville, and others, it was not unusual to find a significant percentage of two- and three-generation families apparently providing the permanent mining communities so desired by mine operators."

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to introduce the reader to rock bolting and its present application in mining.Rock bolting consists of bolting insecure rock to secure rock in order to form a safe structure. The insecure rock may be a weak beam or loose from arching or from sloughing. The material is strengthened and held in place before damage can result.Little is known of the limitations of rock bolting; to date, work has been carried on by trial-and-error, with large safety factors being used. Rock bolts have been principally used for roof support. Bolting offers a new field of support to the mining industry: it now has a permanent position as a ground control method.HistoryRock bolting is a relatively new means of support, its exact origin being unknown.Bolting has been in use at the St. Joseph Lead Company's property in Southeastern Missouri for the past twenty-six years, the first attempts having been hit-or-miss trials before a systematic attack was made. Many instances of occasional use of rock bolts have come to light .in widely separated mining camps, .some dating back forty years.The first installations were made as supplements to wooden timbering where space was restricted. A series of production technologies are described for gold recovery from complex gold concentrate blended with copper concentrate treated in the SKS smelting process comprising: 1) Feed preparation and proportionate feeding of complex gold concentrate and copper concentrate; 2) SKS smelting gold recovery operation and process control technology developed based on reaction mechanism, process simulation and slag formation optimization study; 3) a dry-process quenching arsenic collection technology developed during de-bottlenecking severe restriction of SO3 in the off-gas on As collection system by suppressing and eliminating SO3 in off-gas as a result of optimizing SKS smelting process conditions and spraying caustic soda absorbent so as to reduce off-gas dew point temperature; 4) electrorefining of impure anodes; 5) technology for recovering such precious metals as Au, Ag, Pt, Pd, etc. from high-Sb copper anode slime produced as a result of gold recovery from complex gold concentrate by using SKS smelting process. INTRODUCTION Gold concentrate resources in China are mainly found in Shandong province, Henan province and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, etc. Currently, recovery of gold is based on pre-oxidation (roasting) cyanide leaching process. This process produces a large amount of cyanide-containing wastewater, cyanide leaching residue and relatively high SO2-bearing flue gas during production, which can cause increasingly more serious environmental pollution issues. Besides, this process route suffers from a relatively low precious metals recovery (70–80%) found when treating refractory gold concentrate and carbon-bearing gold concentrate. These issues have severely restricted the development of the precious metals processing industry in China.

This paper presents the design of a model and process simulation of a vertical mill based on a population balance model. The simulator, Simulink, which is a systematic modeling tool within MATLAB, was used for the simulation. The model will simulate the real time variation trend of each size fraction in the feed material to the vertical mill, as well as, the size distribution of the batch grinding products. Breakage distribution and selection functions are calculated based on batch grinding laboratory experiments using Back-calculation method. The simulated size distributions correspond with those in the actual mill operation having a relative error of less than 0.50%. This work lays the foundation for future research on modelling and simulation of a closed circuit grinding operation consisting of a vertical mill with hydrocyclone classifier.

"Aluminium A206 (AlCu4) is one of the strongest aluminium casting alloys with tensile properties approaching those of ferritic ductile iron. If the specification on the silicon content (< 0.05%) is easy to achieve during alloy ingot production, it is not the case in a foundry, where returns are used which are not perfectly cleaned from the silicate containing molding sand (Olivine). In alloy A206, the Si content is controlled in order to avoid the formation of a low melting point intermetallic phase (such as phase Q Al5Cu2Si6Mg2); these phases will melt during the solutionizing heat treatment to which alloy A206 must be subjected to develop its outstanding mechanical properties. This incipient melting may deteriorate the mechanical properties of Alloy A206 if the solutionizing treatment is applied at the standard temperature of 530°C.In the present study, a lower temperature solutionizing (520°C) was applied to a high Si content 206 alloy in order to reduce or eliminate the possible incipient melting. This was carried out on a complex shape industrial casting weighing 14 kg (31 lb) and 560x410x250 mm (22x16x10”) in size poured in aluminum 206 with a high silicon content (0.22% vs 0.05% max for alloy A206). Twenty ASTM E8 subsize tensile specimens were excised from two locations in the casting in order to compare the tensile properties for the two solutionizing temperature used (530 and 520°C). Optical and SEM microscopy allowed to investigate the causes of the differences in the properties observed between the 2 zones of the casting studied for 3 different heat treatments. INTRODUCTIONIn spite of their “textbook” outstanding mechanical properties (Up to twice the strength and elongation of the widely used A356 alloy), aluminum-copper alloys of the 2xx series are seldom used because of their propensity for hot tearing [Li, 2011], the segregation of copper [Cho, 2003], and their sensitivity to stress corrosion cracking [Jean, 2009, p. 113)]. Also, because of their wide freezing range and high thermal conductivity, a wide mushy zone makes feeding difficult, unless strong temperature gradients are created by liberal use of chills and risers in the critical zones of the part. Because they are prone to hot tearing, grain refining of Al-Cu alloys is particularly important, titanium playing a major role in the process [Sigworth, 2003]; grain refining has also been shown to be beneficial to fatigue strength [Jean, 2009, p. 103]. The practical basis of foundry practices pertaining to these alloys is outlined in an AFS webinar [Weiss, 2014]."

Particle concentration distributions in a leaching tank have been estimated using a novel experimental approach that takes advantage of the galvanic interactions that occur between pyrite (FeS2) particles and a Pt electrode. The collision of FeS2 particles with Pt changes the open circuit potential measured with the electrode due to galvanic interactions. To discern particle collisions with the Pt electrode from experimental noise a simple analytical procedure was first adopted although the use of techniques involving frequency domain analysis is also briefly presented and discussed. Although this method is still under development, it is simple to implement and can yield valuable information regarding the hydrodynamic behavior of solid particles in stirred tanks in very short times. Finally, the advantages and drawbacks of the technique are discussed.
