"An experimental study of chemically enhanced filtration and dewatering of fine coal slurry with and without additives was carried out. The experiment involved determination of effect of slurry concentration, additives (cationic, anionic and nonionic), filter area, filtration velocity, particle size and cake resistance on dewatering and filtration using vacuum filtration cell. Finally, the rate of filtration and dewatering and optimum amount of additives used were determined under suitable filtration condition. Overall, it was found that the filtration and dewatering characteristics were enhanced by increased slurry concentration, larger filter area and larger particle size. In addition of additives, the kerosene was found to be best for enhancing the filtration which yielded cake moisture reductions of approximately 17% by weight. At optimum dosages, the final cake moisture contents were reduced by 3.6% and 5.8% by weight using the appropriate surfactant and flocculent, respectively.INTRODUCTIONFor India, it is estimated that coal constitute a principal source of energy for the next several decades. It is majorly used at thermal power plants to generate electricity and also to a great extent in steel and cement industry. It has been observed that its consumption is increasing so as to meet the energy requirements of the country. It has been found that in a coal preparation plant; approximately 20-25 percent coal is of the mined coal of the range below minus 0.5 mm (28 meshes). Generally, this fine fraction is discarded due to its high cost of processing and further utilisatisation is very minimal. But with ongoing research and development for advanced clean coal technology, various new techniques have been evolved to maximize the utilization of available coal. In recent time technologies such as column flotation, cleaning of fine size coal to lower the ash content and low pyretic sulfur is feasible at high recovery value. But in various researches it is found that one of the biggest hurdles in utilization of fine coal cleaning technology by the coal industry is the economic dewatering of the fine clean coal product. Thus, until an economical and practical solution to dewatering of fine clean coal is achieved, the efforts devoted to developing fine clean coal technology will be wasted. In this paper an effort toward enhancing and developing the optimum technique of dewatering and filtration of fine coal slurry has been made."

The steadily growing demand for metals and their price increase at metal exchanges make the mining and utilization of marine mineral resources like polymetallic nodules, manganese crusts or sulfide deposits in the near future a viable option to potentially increase the supply of base and precious metals. For a country with low potential to mine land-based resources like Germany, the industrial recovery of metals from marine mineral resources could lead to a decreased dependency on imports. In this study, seafloor massive sulfides from the German license area in the Indian Ocean (Kairei field, Southern Central Indian Ridge) are treated to recover copper and precious metals. The aim of the project is to demonstrate the transferability of existing metallurgical techniques to the raw material of deep-sea massive sulfides. As a starting point to process this unconventional resource, samples from the Indian Ocean are chemically analyzed and mineralogical characterized. A comparison is carried out between the samples and land-based copper resources, to highlight the potential which lies in mining the deep-sea floor. This paper will show the general possibility of applying a two-stage pyrometallurgical process, based on a concentrate smelting operation, followed by a converting operation in lab-scale to the provided samples of massive sulfides. Generated slag from the concentrate smelting and the converting operation are investigated by X-ray diffraction to determine the mineralogical composition. The two-stage pyrometallurgical process is investigated by the thermochemical modelling tool FactSageTM 7.2 to evaluate the phase distribution of relevant elements between the metal, matte, slag and gas phase. The thermochemical boundaries of the pyrometallurgical process are therefore set and the results of the thermochemical study can be used as an indicator for the efficiency of an up-scaled process and the generated amount of side-streams, which need to be further treated or circulated back into the process. INTRODUCTION Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) are the third kind of discovered deep-sea minerals besides ferromanganese nodules and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (Sharma, 2017). They occur in water depths around 250–4,000 m (Koschinsky et al., 2018). SMS are characterized by a high base metal and sulfide content. They were created by fluid circulation and hydrothermal convection over time (Han et al., 2018). Commonly, areas rich in SMS are associated with hydrothermal vent fields on the seafloor (Keith et al., 2018).

In order to avoid impurity problem and enhance absorption/desorption kinetics of Mg-based compounds, nanostructured Mg-based compounds were synthesized from Mg, Ni and other elemental nanoparticles produced by hydrogen plasma-metal reaction. XRD and TEM results demonstrate that homogeneous nanostructured Mg-based compounds with less impurity were successfully synthesized by this method. DSC in hydrogen atmosphere, pressure-composition isotherm and the kinetics of hydrogen adsorption/desorption were investigated at different temperatures. The results show that the nanostructured Mg-based compounds can absorb hydrogen in a high speed at a low temperature.

"CANMET’s research into underground coal mining is primarily conducted at the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory (CBCRL), established in 1981 to conduct safety research in underground coal mines. Located close to Canada’s largest underground coal producer, in the Sydney Coalfield of Nova Scotia, CBCRL’s program also includes the two western underground coal operations. CBCRL is a relatively small laboratory with a staff of thirteen — eight professionals and five support staff — with an annual budget of over $1 million. In order to maintain effective research response, flexibility is key and staff are increasingly working in project teams, crossing traditional section ties and also drawing from specialist expertise elsewhere within CANMET.CBCRL’s research activities have had a substantial impact on the Canadian underground coal mining industry, particularly in Cape Breton. CBCRL contributed to Cape Breton Development Corporation’s (CBDC’s) threefold reduction in lost-time accidents in the 1980s. Also, in the last four years alone, CBCRL’s work has enabled CBDC to save over $17 million in improved utilisation of reserves and cost savings. The work embraces the three traditional areas of mine environment, strata mechanics and mining technologies, however the current direction has been strongly influenced by recent external and internal factors. It is timely to review progress and recent directions."

THE DEFINITION of the continental margin, as considered in this paper, is in the broad sense: " ... those provinces of the continents and of the oceans which are associated with the boundary between these two first-order features of the earth" (Heezen et aL, 1959, p. 17). The provinces in the area under con-sideration are: the Continental Shelf, the Continental Slope and the Continental Rise. The Continental Shelf extends from the shoreline to the shelf break, which lies at approximately the 200-meter isobath through-out the region (except north of the Grand Banks, where the break may be defined more properly by the 400-meter isobath). The Continental Slope and Rise occur between the shelf break and the 4,000-meter isobath. (The last figure was somewhat arbitrarily selected for the purpose of this paper.) The Atlantic Continental Margin as thus defined extends along the eastern coast of Canada from the International Boundary in the Gulf of Maine northward to approximately the 60°N latitude off the coast of Labrador. The area of study amounts to at }east 500,000 square miles -an area roughly equivalent to 13 per cent of Canada's total land surface.

Demand for metals will continue to grow as global population numbers and prosperity levels steadily increase. Consequently, there will continue to be a need to design and construct new metallurgical plants. Business success in general requires projects to be financially successful and return appropriate value to their owners. However, in the metals industry, private and public sector financing sources have become very sensitive to the perceived inability of projects to contain costs and meet other business objectives. Thus, the capital for projects has become more difficult and expensive to obtain. It is instructive to note that Ernst and Young (2011) identified that: “Delivery of predictable project results bestows competitive advantage and market confidence to those corporations who successfully instill this discipline”. The implication for future projects is that they must be systematically developed to minimize perceived risks—and more importantly—to demonstrate that the risks are managed to achieve the business case. Then, provided that the project has been developed in a well-structured way, project success can again be defined as a project with: a final cost within 10% of the budget approved at the end of FEL3, when the project is properly defined and the permit conditions are agreed upon; a start-up date within three months of the definitive, scheduled startup date; production levels at 85% of design capacity within a year of starting commercial operation; production meeting the target environmental restrictions; and with zero lost time accidents during construction and startup. The plant design is one of many integrated activities required to achieve these objectives. This book represents a valuable link between the existing engineering literature that encompasses a wide range of engineering fundamental textbooks and design manuals and the project management literature such as the Project Management Body of Knowledge, or PMBOK® (Project Management Institute, 2014). It is evident throughout this book, that the design team is a small but essential part of a much larger project team comprising the project management, construction management, and construction contractor staff. "Comminution represents a significant part of mineral processing plant operating costs. Yet, autogenous (AG) or semi-autogenous grinding mills (SAG) are difficult to control because of disturbances like feed size distribution and rock hardness. AMIRA, within project GeMIII, developed a comminution index from laboratory crusher data. The index correlated with the Bond ball mill work index and with the A×b parameter. The present work extends the use of crusher data as a grindability indicator to real-time industrial applications. The aim is to improve comminution operation using online hardness estimation. Because the operational work index is proportional to the ore work index, rock hardness variations can be estimated from the feed and product size distributions, the throughput, and the power draw of a crusher. Real-time estimation of rock hardness can help understand the dynamic behavior of AG and SAG mills. Multivariate time series were analyzed to understand the impact of hardness on a SAG operation. Results showed that the estimated hardness influences the SAG operation and its throughput. Moreover, non-linear dimension reduction was used to ease the process visualisation and search for potential control strategies. In the future, online hardness measurements should also impact the understanding of comminution circuits and improve their operation.INTRODUCTIONThe variability in hardness, and the feed size distribution, are two of the main disturbances affecting comminution circuits (Sbarbaro & del Vilar, 2010). Size distribution can be measured by imagebased granulometry systems such as WipFrag (Maerz, Palangio, & Franklin, 1996), or by 3D vision systems when the fines are difficult to discriminate by 2D segmentation (Faucher, Makni, Gagnon, Lavoie, & Roberge, 2015).There are few examples of online hardness measurements. One example was the work of Casali et al. (2001) who developed a hardness indicator. The ore grindability soft sensor used the fraction of each lithological class in the ore, as determined by image analysis, to predict the work index of the material. The model was developed using a moving window with a width of 12 months and trends were shown over many years with one data point per month."

"Observations are reported on the pressure leaching of material produced by subjecting chalcopyrite to two types of heat treatment. Calcination of the mineral at 825°C, in the absence of oxygen, induces some sulphur loss by volatization, producing a material from which copper can be leached more rapidly than from chalcopyrite. Treatment of the mineral with elemental sulphur at 475°C leads to sulphur uptake accompanied by a change in mineralogical structure of the chalcopyrite. Copper is prefer-entially and rapidly leached from the sulphur-treated material. A tentative explanation of the sulphur-chalcopyrite re-action is presented."

Good quality sphagnum peat bogs occur across Canada in areas of ample rainfall and cool, temperate climates. Early peat production techniques were restricted primarily to hand digging blocks of peat and piling them up to be dried by sun and wind. Suburban de velopment in the 1950s and the concomitant spread of home gardening triggered a dramatic growth in peat demand; labour costs rose in the same period. Peat production techniques had to alter accordingly. The three mechanical inno vations attempted were hydraulic mining, mechanical block digging and vacuum harvesting. Of these, the last method pro ved the most successful in Canada and is used to harvest 80% of Canadian peat production. Escalating transportation costs are the most important feature affecting future development of the Canadian peat industry.

This study focusses on the production of micro-structured agglomerates with high porosity from iron (III)-hydroxide-containing materials as adsorbent. A fractal-like structure of the agglomerates was created through a two-stage agglomeration process. Developing porous structures was necessary to increase the adsorption capacity. Various materials were used for the agglomeration experiments: i) filter cake (dry matter content 23 to 27 wt.-%); ii) FerroSorp®DGµ, a product which is already being used commercially for various applications in water cleaning. These materials in the pristine state have different characteristics such as dry matter content and particle size distribution. The desired optimised agglomerates can be achieved with the help of additives or binders, respectively. Additionally, the agglomeration process parameters play a vital role. In order to produce agglomerates with high porosity, the process was carried out in two steps. Firstly, FerroSorp®DGµ (d90 < 30 µm) was agglomerated jointly with the aforementioned filter cake in an Eirich intensive mixer (particle size range 125 µm < d90 < 500 µm). The second agglomeration step post drying was carried out in a pelletisation disc or in an Eirich intensive mixer with the addition of polymeric binders (up to particle sizes ranging from 2 to 4 mm). Agglomerates were characterised both in short and long term loading tests using phosphate as model ion. Contact times were less than 10 min, similar to practical application in percolation columns, or more than 7 days, respectively. The results show that the agglomerates produced in the two-stage pelletisation process have more advantageous properties like better accessibility of the active sites obtained by specificly influencing the particle size distribution during the two-stage pelletisation process.

In forecasting revenue for a zinc mine the followingfactors must be considered:(a) mill recovery and zinc concentrate grade;(b) metal price forecast for all payable metals;(c) smelter terms; and(d) other selling costs.Normally, data from test work are used to determine mill recovery and concentrate grade.Market forecasting, and indeed all economic prediction is an inexact science and probably will always remain so. We have our econometric models our input/output models and a lot of other tools. But they are of no help in predicting the unpredictable. OPEC&apos;s huge increase in the price of oil was certainly the most dramatic example of this. It had a tremendous effect on the cost of producing most products world wide and on the price of these products. Any forecasts made prior to the OPEC action were obviously proven wrong."

"Abstract- The accepted practice for the estimation of thin (2D) vein deposits recommends the use of the grade x thickness service variable (i.e., the accumulation). Grade estimates are obtained indirectly by the estimated accumulation/estimated thickness ratio. This practice stems from the varying support (thickness) problem and the resulting non-additive nature of the grade variable. We compare the actual performance of the direct grade estimation approach used by some practitioners to that of the indirect approach using accumulation. Our simulated and real data indicate that the direct approach is more accurate for point grade estimation where the grade-thickness correlation coefficient is positive (and vice-versa). Moreover, the relative gain of the direct method increases with the (positive) correlation coefficient. This finding contradicts common thinking that the indirect approach should be the preferred method where grade-thickness correlation is strongly positive. Also, for a given positive grade-thickness correlation, the relative gain of the direct method increases with the coefficient of variation of the grade and thickness. Résumé - L’estimation de veines minces (2D) minéralisées est normalement réalisée à l’aide de la variable auxiliaire épaisseur x teneur (i.e., accumulation). Les estimés des teneurs sont alors obtenus indirectement du rapport accumulation estimée/épaisseur estimée. Cette pratique découle du problème du support variable pour la teneur, l’épaisseur de la veine, qui fait que la teneur est alors une variable non-additive. Nous comparons les performances de l’estimation directe de la teneur, utilisée par certains praticiens, à celle de l’approche indirecte. Pour l’estimation ponctuelle des teneurs, nos données simulées et réelles indiquent une meilleure justesse de l’approche directe quand la corrélation teneur-épaisseur est positive (et vice-versa). De plus, le gain relatif de la méthode directe s’accroît avec la valeur de cette corrélation (positive). Ce résultat contredit l’opinion répandue que l’approche indirecte devrait être utilisée en présence de forte corrélation positive de la teneur et de l’épaisseur. Nous montrons également que pour une corrélation positive teneur-épaisseur donnée, le gain de l’approche directe augmente avec les coefficients de variation de l’épaisseur et de la teneur."

Un recouvrement de type couverture à effets de barrière capillaire (CEBC) a été mis en place en 1988-1999 sur le parc à résidus de l?ancien site minier Lorraine situé au Témiscamingue. Depuis sa construction, la CEBC fait l?objet d?un programme d?auscultation et de suivi qui vise à évaluer son comportement hydrique et sa capacité à limiter le DMA. Des essais de consommation d?oxygène ponctuels ont également été réalisés sur le site afin de mesurer directement le flux d?oxygène traversant la couverture. Les résultats provenant des relevés de teneur en eau volumique et de succion, pour les années 1999 à 2001, montrent que les effets de barrière capillaire sont présents et que la couche de rétention d?eau demeure dans un état près de la saturation pour l?ensemble de la couverture. Les flux d?oxygène calculés à partir des mesures mensuelles sont en général inférieurs à 10 g/m2an, soit en deçà des valeurs de design de 20 à 40 g/m2an. Les essais de consommation d?oxygène réalisés sur la CEBC donnent également des flux d?oxygène du même ordre de grandeur. Les résultats obtenus de ces différentes méthodes d?évaluation concordent, et ils confirment l?efficacité de la CEBC à inhiber le flux d?oxygène et à contrôler le DMA.

Hauling trucks are important part of equipment fleets for large earthmoving operations such as those encountered in dams and highway construction projects. This paper presents an automated methodology for tracking and estimating productivity of hauling trucks fleet operations in near-real-time. Recent advancement in automated site data acquisition technologies made their use in tracking and monitoring of construction operations feasible. However, these technologies fail to track hauling truck fleets due to the change in the cut and fill locations from one cycle to another; making tracking and progress reporting difficult and inaccurate. In addition, there is very little work done utilizing data sensed directly from equipment, for example sensing when truck dumping bed is raised during the dumping process. The technologies deployed in the developed method are Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and equipment control sensors. Low cost passive RFID tags are attached to hauling trucks and fixed RFID readers are attached to loaders or excavators. The read range of the used RFID tag is centimeters, to be activated only when a loader with an attached RFID reader is loading a truck. On the other hand, control sensor is connected to the truck control system and operated by the motion of its movable bed. The function of control sensors is to record the signal time when the truck operator gives order to the truck control system to raise or lower truck bed. The captured data is then transferred wirelessly from the RFID reader and control sensor to a computer housed in one of the temporary offices onsite and subsequently to the main server in the contractor?s head office. Fusing the data captured from RFID reader and control sensor is used to identify loading, travel, dumping and return time that constitute the hauling truck cycle time. The collected data is analyzed and processed automatically, without human intervention, to calculate the productivity of the hauling truck and to report it directly to onsite personnel. Relational database is developed to support the implementation of the proposed method. The developed database is used to process the data captured by the RFID and the control sensor to calculate the productivity achieved in cutfill operations in near-real-time. The developed methodology is expected to facilitate early detection of discrepancies between actual and planned performances.

The beneficiation of barite in mill tailings using an agglomeration technique has been demonstrated. Barite was selectively absorbed from a conditioned aqueous slurry into a collector oil by mechanically mixing slurry and oil. The resulting oil-bonded barite-containing agglomerate was washed, to remove gangue material, and further mechanically contacted with dilute H2SO4 This treatment resulted in the transfer of barite into the aqueous phase. Grades as high as '97% BaSO4, with recoveries of 80%, have been obtained using this technique.

"Refractory materials are an integral part of aluminium production. One special feature of aluminium making is the prominent role of sodium in all parts of the production process. This presence of sodium inflicts stresses on the refractory materials through reactions and may cause severe damages to the refractory linings. The present paper address possible reactions between sodium and refractories in anode bake furnaces, electrolytic pots and casting furnaces. The discussions presented in the paper points to the importance of selecting materials with excellent alkali resistance in all parts of the aluminium making process, although alkali resistance is not the sole parameter to determine refractory life-time. ""Acid"", i.e. silica-rich alumino-silicate refractories are shown to be the best materials for aluminium electrolysis cell potlinings, whereas high- alumina refractories based on minerals like andalusite seems to be the preferred choice for anode bake furnaces as well as cast house furnaces."

Industry today is now more than ever dependent on its assets and on the standard of maintenance. Changes in technology, environmental regulations, a continually improving focus on safety and global competitiveness has made maintenance a key activity in sustaining safe, financially viable and environmentally integral operations. Maintenance used to be looked upon as a cost centre with a sole focus of fixing equipment to attain high availability. Maintenance today affects all aspects of the business: safety, environmental integrity, energy efficiency, productivity, costs, and product quality. These new demands on the function of maintenance requires us to think vastly differently about what maintenance is all about, even to the point of contradicting old beliefs. In the following paragraphs we will examine some of the changed thinking that has evolved over the last 50 years. These new concepts will lay the foundation for the implementation of 21st century best practice maintenance.

Iron ore samples containing apatite are fractionated to acceptable products by spherical agglomeration methods. The phosphorus is upgraded by a factor of 10 at an elevated pH. High-grade iron products are obtained in good yields from the tailings in a second step of the operation. The grade of the phosphorus separated appears to reach a maximum at about pH = 10; recovery of iron decreases below about pH = 4. Both the recovery and grade of iron are found to be reduced sharply above about pH = 8.

"There has been a continuous evolution with the use of pre-cast concrete elements in the construction of aluminum smelters. In 1990, Phase I of Alouette was built using cast-in-place concrete exclusively. Whereas, other AP 30 technology plants such as Hillside 2 in the mid-1990s used pre-cast concrete beams with cast-in-place floors. Mozal 2, in 2002, used pre-cast concrete beams with pre-cast partial-slab operating floors. Alouette Phase II went further. Not only were the potroom building beams and floors pre-cast, but the entire pot support system, insulating walls and basement jersey walls were pre-cast. Once the techniques for bending and welding the reinforcement bars and the design for attaching electrical insulating plates to the concrete was perfected, the challenge for the project remained only in the logistics of transporting the pieces to site and simple erection. The overall impact on the project was dramatic. Using prefabricated concrete not only allowed advancement of the schedule, but totally eliminated formwork, re-bar installation, and form removal activities along with the handling of all the materials involved with these activities. With the elimination of these labour and material-intensive portions of the job, exposure to work injuries was dramatically reduced. The most prevalent activity for lost time accidents is during the rough work associated with concrete formwork, placing concrete and form removal. Another area where prefabricated elements were successfully used on Alouette Phase II was for the insulating walls enclosing the pot area, known as the ""claustra walls"". Usually these walls are constructed in-situ using mortar and breeze block. Success was also achieved with prefabrication of the perimetric walls that are installed at the lower floor of the potroom. A big advantage of using prefabricated concrete in the electrolysis area is in assuring electrical isolation for the operating floors. Poured concrete requires a meticulous clean-up effort before commissioning to establish the electrically ""floating"" characteristics of the operating floors.
