THE problem of dust control in metal mines has, of late years, received considerable attention. In 1932, a detailed study of dust conditions at the Sullivan mine was undertaken and, while there are no actual data available regarding conditions prior to that date, there has unquestionably been a great improvement as a result of the investigation and of the preventive methods adopted. In attacking the problem, three main factors were considered: first, and most important, how to prevent dust from being formed; second, how to depress or collect it if formed; and third-if unable to accomplish these-what precautionary measures must be adopted to prevent inhalation of this dust. Seven distinct methods of dust control are now practised at the Sullivan. Six of these are employed underground; they are tabulated below in the order of their relative importance. The seventh method is used in the crushing plants on the surface. MR. M. W. Boom: I would like to congratulate Mr. Russell on his fine paper. One very good point which has always appealed to me is the smooth working of a steam hoist as compared with electrical. He does not mention the steam hoist at Springhill which has been working there for a good many years. MR. S. R. NEWTON: I have read with a great deal of interest the paper presented by Mr. Russell on the development of haulage engines in the mines of the Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation. He is to be congratulated on having produced a comprehensive article showing, step by step, the various improvements that have been made over the years in the design of such engines. I am quite in accord with Mr. Russell's statement that the positive tooth clutch can have too many teeth, and also that the method of driving a sliding clutch hub of any design should be by means of a hexagon or octagon on the shaft. Where the clutch hub does not of necessity slide on the shaft it can be pressed on and keyed to the shaft in the normal manner. With regard to the 'Cramp' internal-expanding jaw-type clutch, while it is true there are more moving parts than with the clutch consisting of a ring with internal cut teeth and a driver having a fewer number of teeth as .described by Mr. Russell; there are compensating advantages to the internal expanding jaw-type of clutch. The V shaped profile of the teeth permits of engagement of the clutch with very much less 'jockeying' of the drum. This is particularly the case in vertical-lift mine hoists, where it may be necessary to engage and disengage the clutching mechanism at frequent intervals.

"A novel hydrothermal method was applied to prepare the precursor of LiMn2O4 using pre-treated electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) and lithium hydroxide as the main raw materials. The precursor was subjected to heat treatment between 400 and 900ºC to obtain spinel Li1.05Mn1.95O4 and Li1.035Co0.035Mn1.930O4 positive materials for lithium ion batteries. The structure and morphology of the obtained powder materials were studied in detail by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). It is found that the precursor has an amorphous structure and a high reactivity, which is easily transferred to spinel structure during heat treatment, obtaining a positive material with an uniform structure and good performances. The XRD patterns reveal that single phase spinel Li1.05Mn1.95O4 can be obtained from the precursor after heat treatment at 600°C in air. The final Li-rich Li1.05Mn1.95O4 product obtained showed a well-defined stable spinel structure and distinctive crystal faces with particle size between 200 and 300 nm. The as-prepared Co-doped spinel sample exhibited a excellent electrochemical performance with an initial discharge capacity of 113.0 mAh/g and 93.8% of its original value was retained after 100 charge-discharge cycling at 0.5 C.INTRODUCTIONThe increasing demand for portable electronic devices and hybrid or full electric vehicles is driving the development of cheap, efficient, compact lightweight and environmental friendly rechargeable batteries systems (Chung et al., 2002; Scrosati, 1995). Lithium ion secondary batteries have satisfied this demand to a greater degree than other battery systems. The cathode material plays a critical role in the performance of Li-ion batteries. The high cost and toxicity of cobalt compounds for the cathode material of LiCoO2 has prompted a search for alternative materials. LiMn2O4-based spinels offer a potentially attractive alternative to LiCoO2, due to its abundance, low price, ease of preparation, environmentally friendly characteristics, better thermal stability, and its effortless recycling (Tarascon et al., 1991; Yabuuchi and Ohzuku, 2003; Amatucci et al., 1999; Tsai et al., 2003). Some achievements have been created to meet the requirements (Guo et al., 2010; Kang et al., 2005; Park et al., 2008; Takahashi et al., 2006; Lee et al., 2001; Yoshio et al., 2001; Arumugam et al., 2008). However, the largest obstacle encountered in the practical applications of LiMn2O4 is its fast capacity fading during long term cycling, which is due to Jahn-Teller distortion of the [MnO6] framework, the electrolyte decomposition at high potentials and manganese dissolution into the electrolyte (Fey et al., 2003). The electrochemical performance of LiMn2O4 is also strongly dependent on its morphological properties, such as crystallinity, phase purity, surface area, grain shape and particle size distribution, etc. All these morphological properties are closely related to the material synthetic routines and heat treatment processes (Huang et al., 2000; Myung et al., 2000; Takada et al., 1998)."

"This paper will identify where the industry is heading with iron· ore in the next ten years. From a customer's point of view, an indication of the changing, yet expanding, market will be made. This will progress further into the most likely changes in chemical and physical requirements of the ore products. No definite target can be set for 1990, but the logic from the direction of the changes will be established.IntroductionThe tonnage and quality of iron ore produced in the eighties will be heavily influenced by energy and investment considerations. That's not a great pronouncement, but this paper will explain how these two factors are :(I) influencing a disproportionate growth of electric furnace capacity and a greater use of scrap for iron units, in place of Iron ore;(2) influencing chemistry specifications; and(3) causing extensive examination of ore agglomerate form. Inflating investment costs are emphasizing the need for more productive blast furnaces, and the iron ore burden is under heavy examination as to how it affects productivity and coke rate."

"There are more than thirty-five deposits or occurrences of celestite in Canada, chiefly in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario and British Columbia. Deposits of economic interest are the Lake Enon and MacRae deposits in the Loch Lomond district of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Two Cape Breton deposits were operated from 1969 to 1976 by Kaiser Celestite Mining Limited, which supplied an upgraded celestite concentrate to an associated strontium carbonate plant at Point Edward, near Sydney.The MacRae deposit is of current interest because of its possible development for strontium carbonate production using the ""black ash"" process. This process involves chemical leaching, rotary kiln calcining with petroleum coke, washing and treatment with carbon dioxide.Celestite is the basic material used in the manufacture of strontium chemicals, principally strontium oxide, carbonate, nitrate, chromate, chlorate, chloride, sulphide and phosphate. Strontium chemicals, in turn, are used in the manufacture of glass and ceramics, in pyrotechnic devices, in the production of strontium metal and in other metallurgical applications. Recently, strontium ferrites have been introduced into permanent ceramic magnets."

The fracture behavior of second phase particles and the role of matrix material on the wear resistances of the three Al-Si alloys containing 8, 17, and 19% Si were investigated using single pass scratch testing technique by applying normal loads between 0,15 and 5,00 N, in ambient air, Optical microscopy and SEM with EDS were used to analyze microstructures and morphologies of scratch tracks of the Al-Si alloys, The results showed that needle-like Si particles fractured under a load of 0.50 N, while block-like Si particles fractured at loads above 3,00 N, The Al-17% Si alloy with large number of needle-like particles (area fraction 16,4%) exhibited the highest coefficient of friction (0,8) and the widest scratch track, The Al-19%Si alloy containing high Si percentage and larger number of block-like particles (area fraction 16%) exhibited the lowest coefficient of friction (0,37) and the narrowest scratch track width. Presence of block-like particles was effective in reducing the amount of material transfer from Al-Si alloy surfaces to the counterface.

Danieli entered into the Direct Reduction (DR) field in order to offer its clients complete turnkey facilities for steelmaking?from processing of raw materials through finished products. The Danarex® Process produces a passivated product, called the Supermetallic (SPM), without hot-briquetting. One of the main features of the Danarex® Process is its ability to produce approximately 50% of the Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) through reduction gas generated in a reformer and another 50% through recycling preheated furnace exit gas. Some other distinguishing features are: separation of carburising and cooling zones and the use of double bustle for better distribution of gas inside the shaft furnace. A pilot plant was set up at Hazen Research, Inc., Golden, CO in order to show that the integrated process works as expected and to obtain process data. The SPM obtained was of a very high quality, evidenced by metallization levels of 92% to 98%. The carbon content could be controlled between 1.5% to 4.0% by varying the operating conditions and approximately 75% of this carbon was present as Fe3C. The product was tested for inertness by Chilworth Technology, England, using UN standard tests and was found to be safe for outdoor storage and transportation.

"Coupon testing has been used to investigate stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of rockbolts in a laboratory based experimental program. This program has focused on the use of ASTM G39 three- and four-point bent beam coupon specimens, immersed in an acidified sodium chloride test solution containing hydrogen sulfide. The specimens were loaded to a range of stresses from zero, to just above the materials yield strength. It was found that only specimens above an applied stress of 580MPa failed by means of SCC, showing that rockbolts loaded to near their yield strength may be susceptible to SCC in-situ.INTRODUCTIONStress corrosion cracking (SCC) is a failure mechanism that affects material through the growth of hairline cracks when exposed to a corrosive medium while under stress (Jones and Ricker, 1999). SCC has been found to affect rockbolts in the Australian underground coal mining industry and has the capacity to cause the catastrophic failure of ground support systems, potentially leading to falls of ground in underground excavations, injury or death to mine personnel, damage or loss of equipment, and loss of productivity through the loss of roadway access (Crosky et al, 2002).Coupon testing utilises small scale samples that are intended to be indicative of the behaviour exhibited by a material in-situ (ASTM G39). The small scale, and usually high surface area to volume ratio of coupon specimens mean that they corrode at faster rate proportional to their mass, greatly reducing testing times. The small scale of the specimens allows them to be more easily prepared and handled, loaning them to mass manufacturing techniques.A previous study conducted by Vandermaat et al (2012b) into the use of three- and four-point coupon testing in-situ in an underground coal mine failed to result in SCC of the specimens. This paper serves as a follow up laboratory investigation in order to understand why these specimens did not fail. Previous studies into the SCC in rockbolts carried out by Gamboa and Atrens (2003) determined that rockbolt steel has a critical stress threshold of approximately 90% of the material ultimate tensile strength (800-900MPa). This study will focus on this critical stress threshold as a possible explanation for the lack of failure in the in-situ specimens (Vandermaat, 2012b)."

"This paper reports on a CANMET-funded examination of less conventional underground coal mining methods. These methods are documented and those that show the most promise for application to western Canadian conditions are discussed in detail.IntroductionIn recent years, mining considerations and economics have encouraged a transition from underground mining to surface mining. However, a change in market conditions or the development of superior underground mining methods may reverse this trend . Should this happen, the industry must be quick to respond and have information available on the latest developments of underground mining technology. In time, deposits of high-quality coal, which are easily accessible to surface mining, will be depleted and a change to underground mining methods will require consideration. The economic transition point between surface to underground will be a major determinant in maintaining a competitive edge. For these reasons, it is important to keep abreast of improvements in underground mining methods. To meet this objective, CANMET awarded a research contract to Monenco Consultants Limited, to investigate unconventional underground mining methods that show a potential for western Canadaoi. This paper presents the results of this investigation."

Early in my term of office it was announced that my Presidential Address would make particular reference to the subject of Mine Taxation in Canada. With this purpose in view there was drafted a Balance Sheet and Earnings' Statement of a Gold Mining Company. This in turn was submitted to the Dominion Income Tax Authorities in Ottawa and to the Minister of. Mines of each of the several Provinces of Canada. The response to the invitation was not as complete as we had hoped it would be, but the figures that were obtained will be presented during the present meeting, and they constitute, I hope, a sufficient basis for extended study and additional enquiry during the year to come ( 1) . In the form letter that accompanied our request to have the submitted earnings assessed, I made the following assertion: "In this work we have three objects in mind. 1.--We will get direct comparison between the different Provinces in Canada. 2.-We will in this way educate our members concerning taxation as it affects the mining industry. 3.-We will publish the details as to how the assessment is calculated by each body, so that a Mine Manager in the most remote district will have a ready reference to guide him in his annual return to the taxing bodies. As things stand, there is no intention of making this a basis for a critical attack on the present rates assessed. It is intended as an authoritative summary of actual conditions as they presently exist".

Despite anecdotal evidence to the contrary, the mining industry is not in decline. Rather, the world?s largest mining companies are among the most consistently profitable companies in any industry. In many cases, profitable mining companies have been built around a few large scale, long life mines. These criteria for success ? size and long life ? have led to the current preference for deposits that can be exploited using open pit methods. However, developments in the science of block caving have resulted in this mining method achieving costs and productivities that are competitive with the largest open pits, while achieving widespread applicability. One implication of the low costs and widespread applicability of block caving is that some current open pits are possibly too deep.

"The hydraulic transport of solids through pipelines can have many advantages over other modes of transport. Numerous successful applications both within plants and over longer distances have demonstrated the technical and economic feasibility of slurry pipelining. Solids successfully transported include kaolin, coal, iron ore, gilsonite and limestone, and others, such as sulphur and potash, are likely to be transported in Canada in the near future. However, though the technology of solids pipelining is quite advanced the underlying principles have not yet been formulated past the semi-empirical stage. The main objective of this paper is to present a discussion of the important technical and economic considerations in the design of so lids pipeline systems by reference to typical data. The Worthington slurry pumps and pilot facilities are briefly described."

The separation of Ni and Co from sulphate medium containing Mn, Mg, Cu and Ca was carried out by solvent extraction. The object of this study was to investigate the synergistic effect using phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272) and carboxylic acid (Versatic 10) and their mixtures in kerosene. The extraction percent of each metal ion was found to increase with increasing pH and extractant concentration. Co was preferentially extracted over Ni under the same extraction conditions. The separation factors of Ni/Co increased with the use of the synergistic systems investigated.

"The new H-W orebody was evaluated by considering its production at three technically feasible rates. Capital and operating costs were estimated f or each rate and production sequences were established using mining cutoff limits generated by an ore value algorithm. The viability of the project was then examined by conducting economic and financial analyses of each of the three production cases under various world economic scenarios. These analyses employing standard profitability measures demonstrated all three cases would be economically viable; the production case which maximized the Net Present Value of the project was the one selected for development and production.IntroductionWestmin Resources Limited and its predecessor company, Western Mines Ltd., has been continuously carrying out mining operations near Myra Falls in Central Vancouver Island since December 1966. The mining operation, whose current production rate is approximately 830 tonnes / day (t/d), based on ore derived from the Myra and Lynx Mines, produces copper, lead and zinc concentrates which contain significant quantities of gold and silver in addition to the base metals.In the late 1970s, with Lynx and Myra ore reserves slipping to unacceptably low levels, a major increase in mine-site exploration was initiated, with outside geological staff brought in to complement the efforts of the mine's geological staff. By the end of 1979, this program had resulted in the discovery of a significant new orebody on a deeper horizon some 300 metres below the one which hosts the Lynx and Myra deposits. Throughout the period 1980-1982, major drilling was carried out to evaluate the new H-W deposit and by the end of 1982, drill-indicated mineral inventory for the deposit compared with Myra, Lynx and Price ore reserves was as shown in Table I. During this same three-year period, a major development and evaluation program was underway comprising environmental monitoring and control programs, shaft sinking test mining, bulk sampling and mill testing, rock mechanics studies and preparation of the Stage I and II reports for the multidisciplinary Environmental Land Use Committee (ELUC).As a result of the preliminary engineering work and exploration drilling, it became rapidly apparent that the H-W deposit could support a considerably higher production rate than the current one. Accordingly, engineering studies including scheduling of development and production as well as capital and operating cost estimates, were focused on three possible production rates: 1350, 1800 and 2700 t/d. Our task was to select the optimum one of these three rates."

This paper describes some of the main aspects involved in implementing the European “Equipment and Protective Systems for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres” (ATEX) Directive (No.94/9/EC) in the British mining industry by the year 2003. It provides a brief background to the Directive and considers its main objective of removing all barriers to trade in Europe. It outlines the need for the European Standards making bodies to write new editions of the ’explosion protection concept standards’ and for manufacturers to adopt new quality management procedures and develop new versions of equipment in conformity with the ATEX categories of “M1” or “M2.” Finally, it assesses the possible future relationship between the European enforcing authorities, manufacturers and users of explosion protected equipment.

"In this study, the vapour phase reduction of titanium tetrachloride conforms to the traditional Kroll chemistry, but employs argon as an inert carrier gas and requires a higher reaction temperature of 1150°C to 1250°C. A vapour phase reaction is advantageous because titanium is the only condensed phase present, and the metal can be collected free of magnesium or magnesium chloride, in marked contrast to the titanium sponge produced by the conventional Kroll process. The yield of metallic titanium from the reaction was determined as magnesium additions ranged from 36% to 168% of the stoichiometric requirement. Yields of over 99% were obtained when an excess of magnesium was present. Although the collection efficiency was low, metallic titanium was collected at the reaction site, where all other species were present as vapours. Magnesium and chlorine concentrations in the collected titanium were less than 0.3%.IntroductionA proposed method (Curlook, 1987) for titanium production has been investigated as an alternative to the conventional Kroll process (Kroll, 1940). The advantages of the new process include a simplified means of recovering the product metal, and a potential for lower overall energy consumption and greater product purity. A higher reaction temperature for the reduction of titanium tetrachloride results in a vapour phase reaction, rather than the conventional liquid phase reaction. This is the major conceptual difference between the proposed and the established (Kroll) processes.This study focussed on optimization of the process chemistry and briefly examined the issue of product deposition and collection. "The in situ block size is a key parameter in the geomechanical characterization of rock masses. It describes the fracturing of the rock mass and thus is a measure for the degradation of the rock mass strength. Several classification systems use the in situ block size. For instance, the Geological Strength Index (GSI) requires the “blockiness” and joint surface condition factor as key input parameters. The “blockiness” has recently been related to the in situ block volume (Cai et al., 2004). Due to the limited information about the internals of a rock mass, it is not possible to determine the in situ block size directly. Currently, the in situ block size is determined by calculations using oversimplified models, vague estimations or, due to the lack of relevant information, it is neglected. As remote measurement systems have become available for rock mass characterization, a more comprehensive record of discontinuities can take place. Measurements can be performed on exposed rock outcrops and in particular on tunnel faces and walls, delivering the location, orientation, spacing and persistence of discontinuities at an arbitrary number and locations. An estimation of the in situ block size at the same level of sophistication is still not available. This paper aims at examining the relationship between visible and measureable information at the rock surface, and the in situ block size. Three-dimensional block model simulations were performed using the block model engine of the distinct element code 3DEC. Initial investigations focussed on the minimally required observation area in order to obtain reliable block size distributions. Based on a representative volume element, a reference distribution of the block area at the observation area for a specific discontinuity system was determined. Subsequently, the size of the observation area was decreased stepwise and each new distribution was compared to the reference distribution. For all analyzed systems, it turned out that the mean block area must be smaller than 1% of the observation area to achieve a reliable block size distribution. Further simulations focussed on discontinuity systems with three non-persistent sets. The results were compared to the formula proposed by Cai et al. (2004). A transformation factor T was introduced which replaces the persistence terms in Cai et al.’s proposed formula. The factor describes the correlation between block volumes generated by persistent and corresponding non-persistent discontinuity sets. The simulations included the variation of the discontinuity set spacing, persistence, and orientation. The mean and additionally the 25%-, 50%- and 75%-quantiles of the block size distribution were analyzed. Examining all values for the transformation factor the distribution can be described by a power function with a negative exponent. The function depends on the persistence only. Finally, the results of random simulations were compared to the analytical formula using the transformation factor. The predicted mean and selected quantiles show a good agreement with the simulation results. It gives a comprehensive picture about the block size distribution in discontinuity systems with three non-persistent sets."

Stabilization of arsenic via the precipitation of large-sized scorodite (FeAsO4·2H2O) particles usually involves the use of expensive autoclave systems operated under high temperature and pressure conditions. Alternatively, DOWA developed a novel scorodite synthesis process (DMSP®) wherein the Fe(II) ions in solution containing As(V) ions were oxidized by O2 gas under atmospheric pressure. In this process, crystalline scorodite particles were formed via the formation of a gel-like precursor containing Fe(II). Based on this concept, in this study, we have demonstrated the synthesis of scorodite particles by the addition of Fe(III)-containing solution to the experimental solution containing Fe(II) and As(V) ions, without the O2 gas oxidation process. Ferric sulfate (Fe2(SO4)3) was used as the source of Fe(III) ions. Results indicate the precipitation of scorodite particles, comparable to that of the O2 gas oxidation method.

This paper presents a discussion of the factors affecting copper scrap markets, including such items as price levels, freight. grades of material, sources and packaging. Reference will also be made to the effective life and turn-around of the copper content of some products. Introduction IN TERMS OF SIZE, copper scrap is second only to ferrous scrap in tonnage recycled. However, in total value, it is second to none. For example, world scrap recovery during the preceding 4 years averaged just under 2,300,000 metric tons per annum, and at an average price of 70 ¢ a pound, this works out at a turnover of about $3.5 billion, which indicates that the copper scrap industry, or recycling as it is now becoming known , is a substantial one.
