In this first sub-seafloor examination of an active hydrothermal system hosted by felsic volcanic rocks at a convergent plate margin, we drilled 13 holes altogether, achieving deep cored penetrations at two sites. Our aims were (1) to delineate the lateral and vertical variability in mineralisation and alteration patterns below the PACMANUS hydrothermal site near the 1650-1700 m-deep crest of Pual Ridge in the eastern Manus back-arc basin, so as to understand links between volcanological, structural and hydrothermal phenomena, and (2) to establish the nature and extent of microbial activity within the system. Technological innovations vital to success included our precise location of holes on small targets with drill-stem video, the use of a new hard-rock re-entry strategy, and deployment of casing with a new hammer drill. Other technical achievements were the first ODP application of an advanced diamond coring system, and the first direct comparison in a hardrock environment between structural images obtained by wireline methods and by logging-while-drilling (resistivity-at-bit).

Internal textures of manganese nodules from Clarion-Clipperton zone of northeastern Pacific Ocean are classified into five textural zones: columnar-textured layered zone, cuspate-textured layered zone, cuspate-textured massive zone, cuspate-textured porous zone and massive- textured massive zone. Vernadite is the main constituent mineral in the columnar- and cuspate-textured layered zone. Buserite sometimes occurs in the cuspate-textured layered zone. The cuspate-textured massive zone is mainly composed of buserite. Todorokite is also associated with buserite in the massive-textured porous zone, where cuspates and globes are partially replaced by massive texture. In the massive-textured massive zone, todorokite, buserite and birnessite occur together. The analyzed elements of all zones are also classified into four elemental groups by the cluster analysis of correlation coefficients: Mn group, Cu-Ni-Mg group, Fe group and Si group. Mn group consists of Mn and K. Cu-Ni-Mg group consists of Cu, Ni, Zn, Mg and/or Ca, Na. Fe group consists of Fe, Co, Ti and/or Ca, P. Si group consists of Si and Al. Each textural zone is composed of three or four elemental groups. These four elemental groups are correlated with mineral composition, such as, Mn group with todorokite, Cu-Ni-Mg group with buserite, Fe group with Co-bearing iron-oxyhydroxide minerals, and Si group with silicates.

Analysis of ground and airborne radiometric measurements in the Saquarema region (Rio de Janeiro) provides new insights into the breakdown and transport of mineral aggregates containing monazites, under sub-tropical weathering conditions. The breakdown process, accompanied by loss of low-density clay fractions in weathered materials is considered responsible for the observed patterns in relative enrichment of thorium and uranium along the migration paths of radionuclides. The characteristic features of these patterns provide clues as to the time and distance scales associated with processes of weathering and erosion. It is also possible to determine approximate locations of concentrations of accessory minerals. In this context, we advance the hypothesis that large under-water monazite deposits may be present along the offshore sand banks, in the coastal region of the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Williamson and Associates, Inc of Seattle, Washington has recently built a remotely operated seafloor coring system for Nichiyu Giken Kogyo Ltd and the Metal Mining Agency of Japan (MMAJ). The system is designed to core to depths of 20 meters in 6,000 meters of water and will be operated from MMAJ's research vessel Hakurei-Maru No. 2 The corer uses rotary rod coring methods and will recover a core diameter of 44 mm. To facilitate coring through soft or unstable formations, the corer has the ability to set casing. The corer is fitted with thrusters for positioning during landing and telescoping legs for leveling. The system is operated through a 12 km electro-optical cable. Data displayed to the operator provides the operator with real-time feed back and control over the coring process. The operator has independent proportional control over bit weight, advance rate, rotary speed, and flushing water flow. The process of making up, breaking down and storing the drill string is automated and is controlled by a logic driven software routine. The system is currently undergoing trials in Japan. This presentation will discuss the drill's capabilities and should be of interest to those in need of a tool for assessing the thickness of marine mineral deposits.

"This study presents the first catalogue of marine mineral deposits and energy resources along the continental margin of Spain. Aggregates, oil and gas and metalliferous mineral areas have been defined and mapped. The catalogue, implemented in a geographic information system (GIS), is conceived as a first national database within the European network, which is being built as part of the EMODnet-Geology project. It comprises 8 types of mineral and energy resources for the Spanish margins: aggregates, hydrocarbons, evaporites, placer deposits, phosphorites, polymetallic sulfides, polymetallic nodules and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (Figures 1 and 2). The catalogue stores a total of 409 marine mineral deposits and compiles information such as name, deposit type, main morphology, main minerals, setting or area extent for each mineral deposit. By number of deposits compiled, the aggregates are the most abundant (286) followed by hydrocarbons (62), cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (32), evaporites (9), placer deposits (8), phosphorites (5), polymetallic nodules (4) and polymetallic sulphide deposits (3). Considering the total extension, hydrocarbons (32,386 km2) and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (24,951 km2) represent the biggest areas.The Geological Survey of Spain (IGME) is developing a new tool in the catalogue, according the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Database parameters, for individual samples on each ferromanganese deposit. The database includes an extensive collection of records that comprise five information groups: general cruise and sample data, physical properties, mineralogy, geochemistry and acronyms used. New attributes have been incorporated, in example: geophysical, sedimentological and petrological data in the deposit area, sample weight, porosity, morphology, textural and structural features, geochemistry of major, minor and trace elements (included REEs and PGEs) and supplementary cruise and laboratory reports. This new database complements the EMODnet-Geology project minerals catalogue, offering a deeper level of information for the areas with major potential for mineral or energy resources as they are the Canary Island Seamount Province, the West Margin of Galicia and the Gulf of Cadiz."

Typical coastal placers leave no doubt that placer accumulation can result in significant concentration of heavy minerals in marine shallow water environment. However, the same situation is quite predictable for guyot?s slopes at stages of submarine volcano formation and later submersion of guyots to a depth of up to 3-4 km. Where these placers could be found is also clear ? in coastal facies (as typical coastal placers), and in morphological traps down guyot slopes in zones of active submarine currents. The latter could be cracks in rocks, shallow depressions, spurs, and structures, such as coral reefs, stromatholiths, and even ferromanganese crusts. The last of these have been studied carefully by the author in the Magellan Seamounts and on the Mid-Pacific Rise: tens of minerals, including mineral forms of PGE, REE, Mo, W, Te, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, &Zn were identified as a xenogenic (trash) minerals. The detailed study of polished epoxydized sections, showed that interstitial spaces of Fe-Mn botryoids are enriched in heavy minerals (predominantly titanomagnetite). Taking into account the irregular character of crust surfaces and their position in active water environment, we can definitely state that they are the ideal traps for placer minerals. Study of guyot basaltic matter showed the presence of similar REE, PGE minerals that are in the crusts, and the same (mostly) micron sizes of minerals. High content of PGE in some basaltic varieties (up to 1 ppm) suggests that this is a reasonable source of these elements in the crusts, rather than the water column (which is normally considered to be the case by most marine scientists). Predominance of Pt in hydrogenous (?) crusts is interpreted as due to the better stability of Pt mineral forms during weathering and transportation (these are isoferroplatinum, and silicides). Comparison of 143Nd/144Nd values in bulk crusts, heavy fraction of crusts, basalts, and water column supports the author?s idea, that a significant part of REE also comes from basaltic matter (in form of monazite, CeO2 etc.).

The paper concerns with some questions of Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) control system design, which allows a motion at rough undersea terrain. The AUV advantages reveal itself completely during exploration of such objects as seamounts and reefs area. These objects are characterized by steep slopes (30 degrees and above) and chaotic situated obstacles (rock debris, pinnacles, escarpments). Uses of other technical facilities for operating in such formations are difficult, dangerous or impossible. These regions take an interest due to the presence of iron-manganese crusts. Modern AUV can estimate density of mineral by means of still camera or video recorder. For this reason the vehicle has to move with the distance of 3-5 meters from seabed. Under such conditions micro- and mesorelief presents a considerable danger for AUV. The AUV can bypass underwater obstacles in the various ways. However, in any case AUV motion will be characterized by intensive maneuvering on various speed (from 0 up to 1.5 m/s), circular change of tractive force vector and, hence, a circular flow about the hull. So, AUV is equipped with the propulsion system, which provides free modes of motion. AUV control system (CS) has tri-level structure to allow a motion in a rugged seabed terrain. According to the generally accepted categorizations, CS includes execution, coordination and strategic levels. The strategic level contains the goals of AUV mission. Obstacles avoiding and route choice are realized by means of simultaneous maneuver in vertical and horizontal planes. Sonar system is used for data acquisition about obstacles. It consists of a few echo-sounders with fixed directivity pattern. The route choice algorithm operates at two lower levels of CS. Basic (?reflex?) functions of spatial motion are realized within the execution level and considered in the paper. The choice of motion modes is carried out at the coordination level of system. All accessible navigating information (the data from flight sensors and from multichannel echo-sounder systems) is used for this purpose. In addition the bypass of characteristic types of obstacles is carried out with the help of basic motion modes combination. The modeling results of bypass of various typical obstacles, and also their combinations are described in the paper.

INTRODUCTION In October 2014, on behalf of the French government, Ifremer, along with the International Seabed Authority (ISA), signed a contract to start a detailed exploration program for seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits in the work plan located on the slow spreading Mid-Atlantic ridge (MAR). The contract has a fifteen-year lifetime and the related exploration program must include the outline of SMS deposits and a resource assessment, as well as detailed environmental base line studies in the contract area. The exploration for SMS deposits generally includes detection of hydrothermal plume anomalies, acquisition of surface and near-bottom geophysical data, sampling operations from the research vessel (e.g. dredges, cores), and dive operations. The environmental studies include, among others, short and long-term oceanographic measurements, water column studies, biodiversity evaluation close and far from SMS deposits, characterization of natural hydrothermal plumes and related sedimentation. The HERMINE research cruise held from March 13th to April 28th 2018 (R/V Pourquoi Pas?) was the first cruise dedicated to exploration of active and inactive SMS and to the quantification of natural chemical input to the water column. The HERMINE cruise strategy was built up around three main objectives: (i) regional exploration including the detection of plume anomalies and the research of SMS deposits, (ii) local exploration of a SMS district and (iii) integrated study of a natural hydrothermal plume. This 3-in-1 cruise required us to optimize the switch between dives and surface operations. Day-time was devoted to dive operations whereas night-time was mostly dedicated to CTD/Rosette operations. The Nautile HOV (Human Occupied Vehicle) was well suited to the working time schedule of the cruise because it was time efficient in shorter (i.e. < 10h) dives due to fast descent and ascent speed, fast submerged forward speed, high maneuverability and the ability to carry heavy science payload as well as large volume of samples. Regional Exploration The first seventeen days of the HERMINE cruise were devoted to regional exploration, i.e. the detection of new plume anomalies and the research of new sulfide mineralization in the French work plan (10 000 km2; 6 clusters).

The continental shelves occupy a vast area of Russia and contain complexes of commercial placer minerals. Of prime importance are Cenozoic placers of valuable minerals including gold, cassiterite, diamonds, chromite, platinoids, and minerals of titanium, zirconium and rare earth elements, biogenic amber and fossil ivory (1). Commercial placer minerals are associated with shelf placer formation zones (SPFZ). These zones are located at junctions of marginal orogens and shelf troughs in morphostructures where upwarping, subsidence, and sign-variable neotectonic movements are not significant. The SPFZs are characterized by ancient buried leveling planes with mantles of waste, series of wave-cut aggradation terraces on land and beneath the sea, and drowned and buried stream valleys. The occurrence of mineral placers in the SPFZs was caused by endogenic mineralization and exogenic placer hosted formation. Concentrations of commercial biogenic minerals are associated with areas of burial of biogenic material (release of resins by plants and theriofauna thanatocoenoses) and with their transition zones. Since the Oligocene, alternations in marine transgression-regression have dominated the shelf areas. This has resulted in the formation of polygenic placers. Climatic conditions are of great importance: warm and humid climate in the Paleogene-Neogene changed to colder climates in the late Pliocene (polar type sedimentation; formation of permafrost strata and sea glaciation). These events are responsible for the regularity in placer formation during the Cenozoic in which the early Cenozoic (Eocene-Oligocene-Miocene) and late Cenozoic (late Pliocene-early Pleistocene and late Pleistocene-Holocene) epochs are prominent.

Surface processing vessels for deep-sea nodule mining operations will produce dewatering plumes that will be released at some depth into the ocean water column. We are studying all aspects of this part of the nodule mining process. First, we have developed analytical and numerical models to determine the effects of highly non-uniform, realistic stratifications on forced, compressible plumes with finite initial size. The classical plume model is developed to take into account the effects of compressibility and thermal conduction through the dewatering pipe. Our results show how small-scale features of a realistic stratification can have a large effect on a plume, and provide a basis for determining at what depth dewatering plumes can be released. These results form the basis for our PLUMEX field experiments, in which we will study the dynamics of dewatering plumes over the course of one week of field tests from the vessel R/V Sally Ride. The field experiments will use a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and a Phased-Array Doppler Sonar (PADS) system to study the characteristics of the dewatering plumes. The subsequent transport of the material in the dewatering plume will be monitored via shipboard surveys and, potentially, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) operations, and these studies will be integrated with near real-time, data assimilating numerical model predictions. The ultimate goal of this project is to develop a field validated, recommend strategy for the release and monitoring of dewatering plumes, to help inform the development of ISA regulations and the planning of industrial operations.

Hydrothermal activity is well known from many locations on most mid-ocean ridges, but no hydrothermally mineralized area had yet been found at the ultraslow spreading southwest Indian Ridge up to October 98 when the Japanese RV Yokosuka with the submersible Shinkai 6500 investigated this area. A massive sulfide field was discovered near 27°51S / 63°56E in the 11th segment west of the Rodriguez Triple Junction. The Free University of Berlin had joined this cruise and taken over the responsibility for the study of the respective sulfide mineralizations. Hydrothermal minerals were sampled during two dives at a water depth of 2940 m close to the summit of an axial volcanic ridge called Mount Jourdanne. Massive sulfides occur on the seafloor as small smooth mounds with an average area of about 5 m2. Their surfaces are weathered and have a reddish to brownish colour. In addition to these mound-like structures, small tube-like chimneys were observed; these chimneys rise approximately 30 to 40 cm above the floor and are less than 10 cm in diameter. No indications of hydrothermal fauna could be detected. All the hydrothermal features are spatially related to faults and smaller fissures controlled by an E-W trending graben system crossing the summit region of the submarine volcano. Such tectonized areas are generally considered to be ideal for hydrothermal activity because they may have both a magmatic heat source in the deeper underground as well as pathways for the fluid circulation.

During a series of dives with the submersible ALVIN in 1984, samples of massive sulfide were recovered from four vent sites. All sites occur within a linear, steep-walled cleft about 50 m wide and as much as 30 m deep. The cleft bisects the axial valley floor throughout the 15-km-long study area and appears to have been the source for the most recent volcanic eruptions in the valley. Three of the vent sites are defined by a set of discrete hydrothermal discharge zones; as many as eight have been identified over a distance of 500-800 m along the cleft floor. Sulfide deposits occur as individual and coalesced mounds, spires, and chimneys generally less than 3 m in height but a few might be as high as 10 m. The vents are also marked by extensive, yellow-to-amber ferruginous sediment and clots of bacterial matter. Some vents have extensive colonies of tube worms, gastropods, mollusks, and several predator species, such as crabs and squid. The fourth vent site has no visible discharge and consists mainly of "dead" spires and chimneys of massive sulfide. The massive sulfide samples collected with ALVIN are primarily sphalerite with minor marcasite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, isocubanite, chalcopyrite, wurtzite, and anhydrite. Bulk analyses of these chimney and spire samples show Zn contents approaching 60% by weight and significant enrichments in Ag and Cu. Vent fluids have the highest concentrations yet reported for Zn, Fe, and Mn. Thus, the Zn- and Ag-rich nature of massive sulfide from the southern Juan de Fuca Ridge study area

Marine minerals are more than an academic curiosity as they represent the most significant global source of mineral materials for economically and ecologically sustainable development for the future. Minerals research is traditionally carried out by industry and thus, in the United States at least, applied research in marine minerals may not get the share of government funding or attention that more exotic programs for space exploration or future global disasters engender. Two recent events have significantly changed the status of marine minerals. Discoveries made in the last thirty five years indicate that the potential for mineral occurrences in the oceans and seabeds, area for area, is as high as for terrestrial lands. On this basis the global mineral resource base has been recently increased by a factor of four of which three quarters is underwater. The recently enacted Law of the Sea has mandated what is probably the most far reaching re-distribution of natural resources in human history, and has resulted in a peaceful subdivision of seabed jurisdictions between the coastal nations of the world which should significantly affect future mineral markets and the balance of economic powers. Significant applied research efforts are ongoing for marine minerals as an adjunct to commercial production in southern Africa for diamonds; and in many other parts of the world for sands for beach and coastal protection. Forward planing, including research and development activities focussed on future commercial production of metalliferous oxides, continues in Korea, China, Japan, India, and with lesser activity, in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and the CIS. Annual expenditures for this work amount to millions of dollars. In all cases the environmental aspects of commercial produc¬tion are a significant part of the research. Geologic studies on the occurence and distribution of metal sulfides at plate boundaries continue on a regional basis in the Pacific.

A C-CORE study on behalf of the government of Newfoundland identified the inner continental shelf off northeast Newfoundland as having a relatively higher potential for hosting placer gold than other parts of the inner shelf. Under the auspices of the Canada-Newfoundland Cooperation Agreement on Mineral Development, the Geological Survey of Canada conducted a three-year project to map the distribution of surficial sediments and the abundance of placer minerals (particularly gold) from White Bay to Cape Freels. Much of the study area is a fjord coast, with steep rocky slopes and scattered gravel beaches. The extreme east, from Hamilton Sound to Cape Freels, has a wide, shallow inner shelf, sandy beaches, and extensive coastal dunes. Relative sea level was high in the late glacial period. It has fallen continuously in the west, but in the east it dropped to -19 m, before rising to within several metres of the present level by 3 ka. In terms of surficial sediments and processes, five zones are identified: (1) Deep offshore deep basins that contain thick postglacial mud overlying glacialmarine gravelly sandy mud. This zone is below a depth of 370 m in White Bay, 300 m in the Notre Dame Basin. 2) Basin transition zone in which the sea bed has been eroded by currents, so that glacialmarine sediments are exposed in places. Winnowing has formed an uppermost layer of muddy gravel. There is a slight potential for enhanced levels of fine particulate gold, but the gold would not be exploitable. (3) Iceberg impacted zone Above 200 m the keels of icebergs impact the sea bed, causing furrowing and pitting. Furrows predominate in deeper areas, and pits are concentrated at the inner boundary of this zone. Iceberg turbates have developed in shallow waters (60-100 m). Combined with winnowing, iceberg turbation could enhance the potential for concentration of fine particulate gold, but not into economic quantities. 4) Wave dominated zone Above approximately 60 m the sea-bed sediments are highly mobile due to waves, currents, and iceberg impact. Although, mining of minerals such as polymetallic nodules and sulphides from the deep sea floor has been delayed due to the combination of factors such as current availability of Cu, Ni, Co, Mn (and other metals) on land and their fluctuating prices; these deposits are still considered as the alternative source for metals in the 21st century. Exclusive rights for exploration in the ?Area? (beyond the national jurisdictions of any country) given to eight countries and consortia by the International Seabed Authority and the estimated resource of 300 million tonnes in a typical area of 75,000 km2 is expected to yield about $17.5 billion (at December 2008 metal prices) in 20 years life span of a single nodule mine-site. In order to recover 3 million tonnes of nodules, an area of 300 sq km only will be mined annually (i.e. <1 km2/day) for an optimum abundance of 10 kg/m2. However, during mining, large quantity (22 tonnes/day) of sediments associated with nodules would be resuspended that could lead to certain environmental impacts on the benthic ecosystem. Several small-scale benthic impact experiments in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, have given some insight into the possible environmental impacts and the restoration processes, but the possibility of extrapolating these findings to a commercial mining scale remains an issue to be considered. An estimated capital expenditure of $1.05 billion and operating expenditure of $4.2 billion for a single deep-sea mining venture will have to be weighed against the availability of mineral ores on land as well as the metal prices in the world market. None-the-less, development of technologies for mining and metallurgical processing, as well as formulation of regulations and guidelines for potential ?contractors? to mine these minerals have been progressing consistently. These coupled with recent efforts by certain ?entrepreneurs? to initiate mining of seafloor massive sulphides in the EEZ of certain countries, indicate the continuing interest and support the perception that such deposits could well be the future sources of metals. This paper analyzes the current status and discusses the economic, environmental, and technical issues that need to be addressed for sustainable development of deep-sea minerals.

Recent exploration demonstrates that hydrothermal systems related to upper mantle ultramafic outcrops are common in the modern ocean. Most sites are located on slow spreading ridges with a low magmatic budget. Volcanogenic Massive Sulfide (VMS) deposits, associated with basalt, along the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR) are volcanically controlled near the topographic highs at the center of the segments. Three preferential settings are identified for ultramafic sulfide mineralization: 1) Off axis, on rift valley walls, near the amagmatic ends of the segments; 2) Non-transform offsets and 3) Ultramafic dome structures at the ridge transform fault intersection. The upper surface of these domes is often interpreted as a detachment fault. Three processes are considered for driving hydrothermal cells in ultramafic rocks: 1) regional heat flow at the ridge axis 2) Cooling of a deep gabbroic intrusion and 3) exothermic heat produced during serpentinisation. Along the Mid Atlantic Ridge, four types of ultramafic hydrothermal mineralization are observed: 1) High temperature (>350°C) sulfide mineralization related to low pH fluids, (ex. The Logachev field at 14°45? N and the Rainbow field at 36°14 N); 2) Medium temperature carbonate chimneys (<100°C) related to high pH fluids (ex. The Lost City site at 30°N); 3) Low temperature diffuse venting associated with extremely high methane discharge and pervasive alteration and silicification of both volcanic and ultramafic rocks (ex : The Saldanha field at 36°34 N); 4) Stockwork mineralization and quartz veins with sulfides related to gabbroic intrusions within ultramafic rocks (15°N). When compared to mineralization in a basaltic environment, sulfide deposits are enriched in copper, zinc and specific elements related to an ultramafic rock source such as Ni and Co. They are also significantly enriched in gold which, unlike in basaltic environments, has a bimodal occurrence both in low temperature Zn-rich assemblages and in high temperature Cu-rich mineral assemblages. The Cu-Zn-Co-Au deposits along the Mid Atlantic Ridge seem to be more common than on land where few similar VMS deposits are known. We consider that ultramafic VMS deposits on slow spreading ridges constitute a specific marine type of mineralization that is less easily than back arc deposits, incorporated into the continent during obduction processes.

The University of New South Wales Mining Research Centre (UMRC) has a longstanding research reputation in mining research, with particular expertise in mining systems, mining geomechanics and excavation engineering. The UMRC is now focusing this expertise on the potential of mining Seafloor Massive Sulphides (SMS). The UMRC has initiated a three-year research project that will identify and examine the requirements to effectively and efficiently mine SMS deposits. The major aims of this project are: ? To develop an understanding of the geomechanical characteristics and local physical environmental conditions associated with a ?typical? SMS deposit. ? To develop and evaluate a range of both conventional and innovative excavation processes for mining SMS deposits, and define the engineering parameters required for each extraction option, and ? To identify the materials handling and lifting requirements of the ?mined? SMS material, and the possible integration of the lifting system with the excavation processes considered.

Recent advances in coring technology and in the development of shipboard and/or in situ geochemical geochemical analysis systems have greatly improved our ability to collect and analyze exploration samples, particularly for marine placer exploration programs. The potential benefit of these improvements cannot be fully realized, however, until we also develop more efficient methods of data reduction and interpretation. Specifically, there is a need to provide prospectors with rapid and useful interpretations of the raw geochemical data so that they can exploit promising results and otherwise optimize the exploration program while the exploration vessel is still at sea. The goal of this project has been to identify and/or develop computer software which is capable of making the necessary data reduction calculations and which can be run on conventional desk-top computers. All work on this project has been supported through a research grant from MMTC-CSD to The University of Michigan. The first stage of this effort involved an evaluation of commercially available (i.e., "off the shelf") software to determine its suitability for use in marine placer exploration applications. Various commercial software packages, each purportedly capable of making different types of statistical and/or mathematical calculations, were tested by evaluating their performance in handling geochemical data sets representative of actual marine placer locations. These data sets include the positions and results of chemical analyses of suites of sediment samples collected from areas of known or suspected marine placers along the Bering Sea coast of Alaska. Up to now, much data on marine minerals, as well as on marine geochemistry, have been accumulated. Modem computer databases provide optimum flexibility and power for manipulating these data. The best worldwide marine mineral database is currently the Marine Minerals Bibliography and Geochemical Data Base created by Carla Moore et al. at the National Geophysical Data Center in the United States. In fact, in the course of studying marine minerals and geochemistry we may collect not only digital-character type data but also graph and image (black-white, grey and color image) data types. For instance, correlation diagram between chemical compositions of minerals, spectroscopic graphs, (e.g. infrared spectra, Mossbauer spectra, etc.), grey or color images from both optical and electron micro- scopes (scanning or transmission electron microscopes) as well as seabed photographs. Charles L. Morgan et al. (1993) reported that 10,000 photographs and some video images of the seabed in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the northeastern tropical Pacific have been collected by the Ocean Minerals Company. If both graphic and analytical information were stored in a database, it would be very useful and convenient to marine geologists. This system would not only be able to search for all the data based on one parameter, but also for both size and composition distributions. If possible, geostatistical methods could be combined with fractal dimensional methods. Of course, this would require enormous efforts. Before multimedia technology emerged, it was very difficult to create image databases. The emergence of large-capacity compact discs, high-speed central processing units, and high-speed digital signal processing techniques makes it possible to establish multimedia database management systems (DBMS), image-text DBMS, that involves graphs, text, images, and sound. In order to store image fields in a DBMS, we have to take into account two problems: (1) image access format and (2) image compression code standard.
