Vehicle vibration exposure has been linked to chronic back pain and low back symptoms among agricultural tractor drivers. The objectives of this study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) were to assess driver whole body vibration (WBV) exposures and recommend interventions to reduce the risk of back related injuries, particularly relative to vehicle jarring/jolting (the transient mechanical shock components of WBV). The methodology included collecting, from two independent samples, ?eld data and health and work history data of farm equipment operators. Data were collected during mowing, raking, baling, chiseling, tilling, and road travel for different model tractors. Spraying using a sprayer and shrub removal with a skid steer loader were also included. Based on ISO 2631 (1985), the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, threshold limit values, presents 0.5 m/s2 as the action level recommended by the Commission of European Communities for overall weighted total RMS acceleration (vector sum for axes x, y, and z) [ACGIH, 2006. Threshold limit values and biological exposure indices. Cincinnati, OH]. WBV measured at the operator/seat interface exceeded this action level. The roughest rides and highest vector sum accelerations occurred with small utility tractor mowers (3.3 and 2.8 m/s2) and a skid steer loader (1.7 m/s2). Major ?ndings from health and work history data showed 96% of participants reported having to bend or twist their necks, although 24% reported neck symptoms. Sixty four percent of participating operators reported experiencing back symptoms (e.g., pain, aching, stiffness, etc.). Recommendations included: specifying a seat that ??better?? isolates operators from jars/jolts with new tractor purchases; maintaining the seat/seat suspension and replacing worn or damaged cushions with NIOSH tested viscoelastic foam padding; using larger diameter tires with radial ply instead of bias ply construction, particularly on small utility tractor mowers, to aid in attenuating ride ??roughness??; using a swivel seat to reduce the stress on the neck from bending or twisting; and improving efforts to educate owner/operators of the adverse effects of WBV exposures. Since the data presented in this paper were collected from two independent samples, the authors were unable to draw any correlations or etiological inferences from the study. However, results were compared and contrasted with other studies which included similar vibration measurements in agriculture.

Sulfur concretes have been developed by the Bureau of Mines as construction materials with physical and mechanical properties that suit them for use in acid and salt corrosive environments where conventional concretes fail. Mixture design methods were established for preparing sulfur concretes using different types of aggregates and recently developed mixed-modified sulfur cements Bench-scale testing of the sulfur concretes has shown their potential value. Corrosion resistance, strength, and durability of sulfur concrete are superior to those of conventional materials. Field in situ evaluation tests of the sulfur concretes as replacement for conventional concrete materials are in progress in corrosive areas of 24 commercial chemical, fertilizer, and metallurgical plants.

Land disturbed by surface mining in Colorado and other western states has increased substantially over the past several years and is likely to increase even more in the future. This study was initiated to provide basic information on hydrologic and erosional characteristics of regraded coal spoils in Colorado as an aid for planning future reclamation activities. Eleven of twenty-one surface mines licensed in Colorado were sampled during the summer of 1980 and 1981. Mines not sampled included mines which had not progressed to the point that reclamation had begun, and mines where operators denied permission to sample. All coal regions were sampled with the exception of the San Juan Coal Field. Physical and hydrologic characteristics of regraded coal spoils in Colorado were determined using standard field and laboratory procedures. Field sampling included characterization of sites (slope, vegetation density, proportion of surface rock, bare soil, etc.) and infiltration measurements using a l-meter square drop former raining on a 1/2 square meter rectangular plot frame. Core samples collected in the field were analyzed for saturated hydraulic conductivity, bulk density, organic matter, moisture retention and texture. The erosion potential of each site was determined using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE). Results of the sampling indicate that infiltration rates vary widely both within and between sites. However, definite trends with respect to coal fields are apparent. For example, the Green River (Yampa) coal region had a wide range of sampled infiltration rates (1.2 to 5.1 cm/hr). However, most of the sites clustered towards the low end of the range. The North Park (Marr Strip) also was rated at the low end of the infiltration range (2.0 to 3.0 cm/hr). Average infiltration rates for the Canon City and Uinta Coal Regions were at the high end of the range (4.9 to 5.5 cm/hr). Multiple correlation analysis of infiltration rates vs. site characteristics showed that infiltration rates were most closely correlated with the depth of wetting, the amount of mulch cover, and site slope. The depth of wetting was highly correlated with the depth of the topsoil and the bulk density of the spoil. In general, the topsoil at all sites appeared to be highly permeable to water intake but once saturated, subsequent infiltration depended upon characteristics of the underlying spoil. Vegetation cover affected infiltration on individual mine sites but was not as pronounced as topsoil characteristics or mulch. Erodibility of topsoil and spoils, as determined by Wischmeier's "K" factor, ranged from 1.34 to 0.56 tonnes/ha. (topsoil) and 1.25 to 0.66 tonnes/ha. (spoils). Definite trends in erodibility are evident. The Green River (Yampa) Coal Region displayed consistently higher erodibilities (1.34 to 0.75 tonnes/ha.) than other coal fields (0.72 to 0.56 tonnes/ha). Lowest erodibilities were observed in the Uinta, North Park, and Raton Mesa Coal Regions (0.56 to 0.62 tonnes/ha). Erodibilities of underlying spoils showed similar trends as the topsoils. Erosion potential (the product of soil erodibility and rainfall erosivity) was detennined using calculated ?K? factors and rainfall erosivities (R) taken from Clyde (1976). Results show that the Delagua coal field, Raton Mesa Coal Region had the greatest erosion potential due to the high rainfall energies in the region, while the North Park and Uinta Coal Regions had the lowest potential erosion.

Uranium mill tailings represent a potential threat to the human habitat by containing large amounts of radioactive and chemically toxic substances in high concentrations. These: undesired components enter the human habitat in various pathways such as by erosion and water or air transport. The main objective of this investigation was to evaluate the actual movement and model the potential movement of contaminants by seepage of water from the tailings into the subtailings soil. This report represents various models of the movement of contaminants using both theoretical approaches and empirical evaluation of data available from other investigations. The data consist of field measurements and laboratory determi¬nations of major and trace cations, the dominant anions, pH, and Eh of moist solids, extracts, and waters from the tailings and surroundings. Evaluation and interpre¬tation of data were accomplished by using Eh-pH diagrams, various statistical methods and the WATEQFC computer program. Data analyses show that the critical area of investigating movement- is the interfaces between tailings and the external environment. The chemical differences at interfaces seem to result in a sink system for contaminants. The tailings-soil¬-water system shows extreme complexities because of chemical and physical hetero¬geneity of the system preventing the use of a single comprehensive model to represent real conditions. The validity of the simplifying assumption used has been shown and increasing complexity has been built into the models. Analogs of these models can be used for evaluation of similar systems.

It is not uncommon to find large quantities of combustible materials in underground metal and non-metal mines. Support timber is the predominant combustible material. Spontaneous combustion, welding and cutting, shorted or overloaded electrical cables and careless smoking are common ignition sources. More recently, there is increased use of diesel mobile equipment that requires fuel storage and transfer areas. Diesel fuel spillage on hot engine manifolds and motors can result in rapid flame growth and heavy smoke accumulation in a matter of seconds. In-expensive, reliable fire detection and suppression systems are available to provide early warning of fire conditions and to isolate and extinguish fires that originate in fuel storage and transfer areas. This report presents an example of how technology developed and demonstrated under Bureau of Mines Contract H0242016, Mine Shaft Fire and Smoke Protection System, may be applied to protect underground diesel fuel storage and transfer areas. Underground coal mining continues to evolve in the U.S., and more reserves are being mined under deeper cover, with worse roof, or with interactions from previous workings. At the same time, the mining community is responding to higher safety standards and intense competitive pressures. The need for effective ground control design has never been greater. Ground control safety issues that have been addressed by recent the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research include: Improving roof support performance; Maintaining safe tailgate escapeways from longwalls; Optimizing pillar design for retreat mining; Controlling multiple seam interactions; Predicting roof conditions during extended cuts, and; Preventing massive pillar collapses. As funding from both government and the private sector has diminished, the emphasis in research has focused on providing the mining community with practical techniques for improved ground control design. Many projects have successfully employed empirical methods that emphasize the statistical analysis of case histories from underground mines. Other projects have employed numerical models and large-scale laboratory testing of roof support elements. Using these data, NIOSH has developed an entire toolbox of computer programs that have been effectively transferred to the mining community.

A reconnaissance for sources of scandium and a metallurgical investigation of recovery methods for byproduct scandium from uranium mill solutions were conducted by the Bureau of Mines. The work on scandium was undertaken to obtain information on domestic resources and to explore and develop recovery procedures in consonance with the Bureau's long-range program for conservation and wise utilization of mineral resources. The element scandium is widely distributed in the earth's crust in trace amounts, but it seldom occurs as an important constituent in any mineral. An exception is thortveitite, (Sc,Y)2 Si207) a rare mineral that contains various amounts of scandium and yttrium and may contain up to 42 percent scandium oxide (SC203). Knowledge of the chemistry of scandium has expanded rapidly in recent years (1, 4, 9)4 but only fragmentary information is available about the metal because it is still largely a laboratory curiosity without established uses (2, 3). A recent study shows some of the physical proper-ties of the metal are (1) density of 3.05 grams per cubic centimeter) (2) melting point of 1,540° C, (3) hexagonal close-packed structure) (4) hardness of about 50 Brinell (500-kilogram load), and (5) an alloy behavior similar to yttrium and rare-earth metals (2). The price of $2,850 a pound for scandium oxide of 99.9 percent purity and $2,700 a pound for oxide of 99 percent purity reflects the scarcity and complex chemistry of the element.

"Introductory Statement:In melting the nonferrous metals and alloys for foundry and rolling-mill work, even with the best practice, there is always a loss, due principally to oxidation. Melting losses are a serious source of financial loss in brass and bronze practice, but they are especially serious in the case of aluminum and its light alloys because of the relatively high price of aluminum. The indications are that the melting losses in many aluminum foundries of the United States are at times high, and in some plants (especially where certain furnaces are used) they are entirely too high when compared with the average practice. The fact that the oxidation losses in melting aluminum and its light alloys are high is well known, but it is doubtful whether the factors governing the most suitable methods of melting for a minimum of dross are equally well known. The metal losses involved in melting are worthy of especial attention now because of the rapidly growing importance of the aluminum industry.Factors in the operation of furnaces which affect metal and fuel losses:The essential requirements in the commercial melting of any metal or alloy are that the melting losses should be low, the melting should be rapid, and the melting cost should be low. Certainly it may not be possible to obtain these requirements in any furnace selected at random, and it follows that the design and the operation of furnaces for melting different metals are subjects that warrant the most extensive study and tests. As a general rule, in the industrial operation of furnaces, run on aluminum and aluminum alloys, an effort is made to keep the dross and oxidation losses as low as possible. In attempting to hold dross losses low, numerous factors involved in metal melting may be overlooked, or at least disregarded, and the net practical result may be that the furnace is exceedingly wasteful of fuel. In the case of aluminum and its light alloys, the effect of increasing the temperature of melting, at least in an atmosphere containing free oxygen and nitrogen, is to increase the net melting loss."

[THE LITERATURE contains relatively few thermodynamic values for interoxidic compounds, and these often are unreliable. This is especially true of data for ferrites and aluminates for which heat of formation determinations may involve extreme experimental difficulties. This report contains the results of new experimental work for obtaining the heats of formation of five ferrites (Ca2Fe2O5, CaFe2O4, MgFe2O4,, NaFeO2, and LiFeO2) and one aluminate (CaAl4O7), and a review and revision of previous similar work of this laboratory on five aluminates (Ca3A12O6,, 12/7 CaO-Al2O3, CaAl2O4, NaA1O2, and LiAlO2), The results for the 11 compounds are combined with entropy and high-temperature heat content data to derive tables of heats and free energies of formation (both from the oxides and from the elements) for the temperature range 298° 1,800° K, The relative stabilities of the compounds are discussed. The presented data all have application to ceramic reactions, and those for the calcium and sodium aluminates are applicable in considering soda-lime sintering processes for extracting alumina from silicate minerals such as day and labradorite.]

[In the examination of bentonitic clay suspensions used for oil-well drilling fluids3/ (and for other purposes, such as a core binder for foundry sand) it is important to have comparative tests for evaluating them. A satisfactory clay for these and other purposes should have the property of forming what is commonly called a "gel," but the measurement of this property has been a real problem. To date the solution has not been satisfactory, and some of the difficulties are considered in, this, paper, which describes a simple form of instrument (identified as an eykometer) for measuring the yield point under hydrostatic conditions of non-Newtonian clay suspensions, including those muds that are thixotropic. An oil-well drilling mud serves several functions, many of which depend on the "gel" characteristics of the mud. Among the more important functions are: (a) To plaster the sides of the hole to prevent caving of the walls; (b) to prevent the loss of the circulating fluid out of the hole by seepage; (c) to carry sand and cuttings out of the hole to the surface as they are formed by the rotary drill; and (d) when circulation of the fluid stops for shut-down or other unavoidable cause, to hold the cuttings in suspension by the setting up of the gel, thereby avoiding the difficulties that result when these cuttings are allowed to fall through the fluid and pack at the bottom of the hole.]

To facilitate increase in the rate of coal production the Bureau of Mines conducted a study several years ago, on the basis of which the allowable charge limit for permissible explosives in single-hole blasting was raised from 1.5 to 3.0 pounds. Further demands for accelerated production led to consideration of multiple blasting in coal, a practice that is deemed hazardous and is not permitted by most States in this country. In multiple blasting, 10 to 20 pounds of explosive or more may be detonated in a coal face within a fraction of a second, which might result in blown-out or blown-through shots with possible ignition of gas or coal dust. As experimental evidence was lacking, in January 1949 an investigation was undertaken in the Experimental coal mine at Bruceton, Pa., principally to study and compare with single blasting the condi-tions under which simultaneous multiple blasting and particularly multiple short-delay blasting may be practiced without danger of igniting gas or coal dust in mines. The first report on this subject was presented at the last international conference of mine safety research. Since that time numerous additional experiments have been made; because of other pressing problems the work has been brought temporarily at least to a conclusion. This paper is the second report on the problem. It does not contain a detailed description of all test conditions and test arrangements, many of which were described 2 years ago in part 1 (now available as Report of Investigations 4868), but the conclusions are based on the entire study. A more complete review, which will incorporate data from the entire investigation, is being prepared as a Bureau of Mines bulletin. Up to the present time, short-delay blasting of coal in commercial mines has been introduced only experimentally in Washington and in a few mines elsewhere. If the system is adopted more generally, new problems may arise, and the study may have to be reopened.

This report has appeared in the National Technical Information Service as bulletin number PB230 972/AS. 1.2 ANALYTICAL PREDICTIONS OF INDUCED VOLTAGES AND CURRENTS The basic building block in this analytical work is the development of an equivalent circuit. The equivalent circuit for the cable depends on all of the distributed parameters of the cable, although the series inductance and resistance are of primary importance. The cable resistances are generally available from handbooks or from cable manufacturers. On the other hand, the cable inductances are not usually available from either handbooks or the manufacturer's published data. Thus, it is useful to present the results of the derivation of the inductance matrix and a few intermediate steps.

Consequently, under a cooperative agreement with the Alabama Power Co., Bureau engineers directed a series of experiments that were carried out on the property of the Alabama Power Co. at Gorgas, Ala. The purpose of underground gasification of coal, regardless of method used, is to obtain the energy contained in the fuel for use on the surface, without mining in the usual sense of the term. Underground gasification can be described as (1) a process where coal, in place, is consumed by partial combustion with air, oxygen, steam, or any combination of these to produce a low calorific value gas (80 to 300 Btu per cu ft) or (2) a complete combustion process in which air is used to produce a gas containing carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and considerable thermal energy.

The Bureau of Mines, in connection with the investigations of war minerals it conducted, examined the graphite deposits of this country, studied the methods of mining and preparation used, and sought to devise more efficient methods for the preparation of domestic graphite, and to standardize the quality of the product. The graphite investigations covered three general phases, as follows: 1. An examination of the deposits in Alabama and other States, and a survey of the methods of mining and preparation used. In this connection methods of sampling and analysis were noted and experiments made to determine a standard method of sampling and a, rapid but accurate method of analysis. 2. Experimental work on the concentration and refining of domestic crucible graphite to improve the quality of the product and to lessen waste. 3. Experimental work in crucible manufacture to determine the properties of domestic flake and the maximum proportions that might be used without impairing the quality of the crucibles. This work was accompanied by photomicrographic study of crucible structure.

MORE THAN 30 MILLION EMPLOYEES each year are exposed to hazardous occupational noise, and approximately one-third of them develop permanent hearing loss (NSC, 2000). Possible explanations for the latter statistic include worker regard for noise as a mere nuisance rather than as an occupational safety and health hazard, and consequent neglect of established protective measures (e.g., hearing protection); lack of knowledge concerning noise; improper use of hearing protection; worker indifference; and inadequate training (Bauer & Babich, 2004). Many drill rigs generate high sound levels, which vary according to the type of machine, its location with respect to the physical surroundings, and the location of the sound measured around the rig. A NIOSH study measured noise output from several types of drill rigs during field investigations (Ingram & Matetic, 2003). Two types of data were recorded the actual noise generated by the drill rig at various positions around the rig and the noise to which the drill operator was exposed during the drilling cycle. For the latter, sound level measurements up to 120 dBA were recorded while hammering casing (metal on metal) in drilling a water well (Photo 1). Several types of administrative controls exist to address worker exposure to loud drill rig noise. Rotating duties to decrease exposure time and posting warning signs in high-noise work areas are two such controls. Another is the use of hearing protection. Worker use of hearing protection has been disappointing, however. One study by the University of Michigan found that construction workers used earplugs and earmuffs only between 36% and 61% of the time that they were necessary (Lusk & Kerr, 1998). In a 2001 study, OSHA reported a relatively low rate of 30.4% for use of earplugs among construction workers (Walker, 2001). Why are rates for hearing protection use so low? One explanation may be workers' lack of concern for noise in the workplace. They expect workplace noise to be a loud and in¬ evitable nuisance and, therefore, accept it as part of the job. As a result, they disregard proven measures that can protect their hearing. Other workers may use hearing protection, but do so improperly. They may misguidedly remain in high-noise areas for extended periods thinking they are protected when in fact they are not. Other reasons for low use and/or misuse of hearing protection include poor education, lack of awareness and inadequate training (Nash, 2003). To address the training issue, NIOSH developed two exercises from which drillers can learn about noise, hearing loss and hearing protection. The first is an invisible ink exercise, titled "Drill Rig Incident" (DRI) (Photo 2); the second is a 3-D slide reel training aid, "Wearing Hearing Protection Properly" (WHPP) (Photo 3). A computer program, developed for the Bureau of Mines under contract, predicts in a quasi-steady-state approximation the ventilation and contaminant concentrations and temperatures when a fire occurs in a multi-level mine. For periods of time in which there is no significant change in the ventilation, yet a fire is producing fumes, a real-time fume concentration throughout the mine is calculated. Multiple and time-variable contaminant sources can be simulated. Recirculation paths that can develop provide a mechanism for increasing the fume concentration in the mine network and are identified by the computer program. This report contains a listing of the Fortran computer program as well as the required format of the input data. Two examples are provided of the real-time spread of smoke from a fuel-rich fire throughout a multilevel mine. The first example considers an operational exhaust fan as well as a booster fan. The second example evaluates the real-time smoke spread following a failure in the exhaust fan; recirculation occurs in this latter case.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Department of Energy (DOE), through its contractor EG&G Idaho Inc., are collaborating on a multiyear research project to evaluate the applicability of three-phase, electric arc furnace melting technology to vitrify materials simulating low-level radioactive and mixed wastes buried or stored at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory and other DOE sites. The melter is a sealed, 1-t (1.1-st), three-phase, 800-kV?A electric arc melting furnace with 10.2-cm-(4-in?) diameter graphite electrodes, water-cooled roof and sidewalls, and four water-cooled feed tubes. A water-cooled copper fixture provides for continuous tapping of slag. An instrumented air pollution control system (APCS) with access ports for analysis and a feeder based on screw conveyors and a bucket elevator are dedicated to the facility. Test data are provided by an arc furnace analyzer and by sensors indicating feed rate; slag temperature; and temperature, pressure, and velocity in the APCS. These data are received by a data logger, digitized, and transmitted to a personal computer for storage and display. This unique waste treatment facility is available for public and private use on a cost-sharing basis.
