Analyses have been performed on geotechnical properties of copper, uranium and phosphate (gypsum) tailings materials, with the intent of identifying typical measures of variability within and among sites, and of characterizing such variability for use in reliability modeling of tailings embankments. In all, data from approximately 41 sites were analysed. Fairly consistent results were obtained for within site variabilities. However no one probabilistic model was found to be applicable to all sites. The distributional forms for most of the data sets are regular, and tend toward Normality when spatial trends are removed. At many of the sites sufficient in situ data were available to allow estimates of vertical autocorrelation distances and measurement noise. Available data indicate that variability in pore pressures may have a more important effect than strength property variation. A major problem in interpreting available strength property data results from the unknown drainage conditions during testing.

[A study of mining methods and underground practices as they influence injury from falls of roof or coal reveals data as to the location in the mine where such injuries occur with the greatest frequency and as to some of the methods and practices which are in use for the prevention of injury. This paper, which presents statistics bearing on the frequency and place of occurrence of accidents and, discusses regulations and practices which have resulted in a low frequency rate from falls of roof and coal in a few representative mines takes its information from mine-accident reports and from the results of studies conducted in a group of 80 mines in the bituminous coal fields of western Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. The statistics from this group of mines cover periods of one to four years but average 2 years and 7 months. During this time these mines produced over 110,400,000 tons of coal, equivalent to one-fifth of the annual production of all bituminous mines in the United States. The coal beds of the mines in the group studied are mostly flat, with local pitches of moderate degree. A number of mining plans are in use, each of which follows a general system of multiple entries, cross entries, and rooms. Room and pillar in panels either advancing, retreating, or half advance and half retreat and the block systems are employed. The methods of pillar extraction are by splitting, slabbing, pocket-and-stump, and open end. It is hoped that in presenting some of the details of the methods and practices at particular mines of this group which have commendable records in the prevention of injury some good may accrue to many other bituminous mines which 'nave similar natural conditions.]

A system to continuously measure the concentration of radon in mine ventilating air has been developed and tested in a uranium mine. In use, the air/radon mixture to be monitored is pumped through filters into a scintillation cell where nuclear decay of the radon produces flashes of light. These are electronically counted, giving a quantitative measure of the radon present. Air is continuously drawn from the mine atmosphere into the radon sensor box. This air sample passes through two filters into the detector cell as shown in the schematic diagram. A portion of the radon in the detector cell will experience nuclear decay, producing polomium 218 and an alpha particle. The alpha particles from the fraction that decays strike a zinc-sulfide coating on the inside wall of the cell and produce flashes of light. These enter a photo-multiplier tube which records each flash as an electrical pulse. An amplifier increases the voltage of each pulse, allowing electronic screening to remove noise and other undesirable pulses. The remaining pulses are counted by a conventional data acquisition system.

A numerical method is presented to calculate the pressure distribution in a petroleum reservoir that has irregular boundaries. The computer program is straightforward and requires minimal data preparation. The method can also be used to determine pressure distribution in many other types of underground reservoirs. In this method, the grid solution of the fluid-flow equations in a reservoir that has regular boundaries (previously published) was expanded to handle irregular boundaries. The computer program locates grid points at the irregular boundaries. The method of mirror images is then used to form a special stencil to determine the pressure at each of these points. Two examples are presented to demonstrate the applicability of the method for virtually any reservoir configuration.

The safety record established by the coal-mining industry of the United States during 1934, although not as favorable as that for the previous year, was better than the record for any other year during the period 1930-34 for which complete figures covering fatal and nonfatal accidents at the mines are available. The number of accidents was 89.98 per million man-hours of employment compared with 86.74 for the year 1933, the latter being the lowest rate in any of the 5 years referred to. The rate was 105.60 for 1930, the first year covered by available data. Employment increased in 1934; the number of workers represented an increase of 8 percent over the year 1933, man-shifts of labor increased 16 percent, and the number of man-hours of labor increased 7 percent. The total number of man-hours of employment also exceeded the number reported for 1932, and was almost equal to the record for 1931.

"INTRODUCTION As a byproduct of its mineral investigation program, the Bureau of Mines has developed a number of operating devices and techniques worthy of note. This paper, prepared under the direct supervision of Paul T. Allsman, chief, Salt Lake City Division, Branch, and under the general supervision of Lowell B. Moon, chief, Mining Branch, reports upon one such device. A simple device has been developed for measuring angles of deviation from the horizontal as recorded on a glass tube by acid etching. The device has facilities, also, for measuring the angle between the long axis of the ellipse and the north-south reference points established by a Maas compass or from an established axial lamina, on the tube, which was ori¬ented to a specific direction in the hole by rod alinement.The device was found accurate within half a degree on repeated orientations of the same tube. However, the degree of accuracy is dependent on the accuracy of personal manipulation in orienting the tube to the correct plane."

Outside air for ventilating coal mines in Alabama varies considerably in both temperature and moisture content during the year. Alternate condensation and evaporation of the moisture on mine roofs may result in stresses detrimental to the strength of mine roof. It is well known that the clays in shales absorb moisture, and many investigations have noted the weakening of shales by absorption of moisture. Parker (1970) concluded that there is an annual cycle of rock deterioration in mine roof rock caused by the annual temperature-humidity cycle at the surface. He further noted that moisture reduces the strength of dry rock by one-half, that moisture added to dry rock can cause failure in compression, and that drying of wet rock causes tensile stress buildups by shrinkage. His recommendations for alleviating the moisture-temperature problem was to seal the rock in critical areas and to control ventilation so that air temperature will be lower than rock temperature. The latter recommendation will avoid condensation on the rock surfaces. Hartmann and Greenwald (1941) published the results of a very comprehensive experimental project to determine the effect of temperature and humidity changes on the behavior of mine roof. Their general conclusions included statements that roof rocks were very sensitive to moisture changes, but had low coefficients of thermal expansion. The Bureau of Mines conducted petrographic classification and flotation studies to determine if acid-grade concentrates could be obtained from individual and composite samples from the Meade Peak member of the Phosphoria Formation, Idaho. The petrographic studies were made to determine the effect of compositional features on concentration of phosphates. The ore grade, ovule size, and clay content were the main features affecting grade and recovery of phosphate. Flotation results on roasted ore with a tall oil emulsion scheme showed that beds containing over 10 percent P2O5 could be beneficiated and composited with the two high-grade beds to produce a composite concentrate containing 31.9 percent 05 at 84.3 percent recovery. Treatment of these intermediate-grade phosphate beds by flotation increased ore reserves over 200 percent and increased the ore-to-waste ratio in the ore zone from 1:5.7 to 1:0.27.

To better understand those factors which increase mining costs in Alaska, a Bureau of Mines study was conducted to compare the estimated costs of operating a 100,000-tpd open pit copper mine located on a hypothetical ore body in the Lake Clark area, Alaska, with the costs of mining a similarly sized hypothetical copper ore body near Tucson, Ariz. The information derived should be beneficial to the State and Federal governments in appraising the potential for development of large, low-grade porphyry copper deposits in south-central Alaska. Conventional mining and concentrating methods were assumed, and capital and operating costs were derived using flowsheets and standard costing methods. The total price required for copper mined in Alaska and Arizona was $1.12 and $0.63 per pound, respectively, plus or minus 20 percent. These values were obtained assuming no leaching of low-grade copper, recovery of gold, silver, and molybdenum as byproducts, 100-percent equity financing, and a 12 percent discounted cash flow rate of return. The average domestic and international prices for copper in July 1973 were $0.60 and $0.916 per pound, respectively. The existence of a developed transportation and power system in Alaska would have reduced capital and operating costs subs tantially. The required price for copper would have declined from $1.12 to $1.05 per pound, plus or minus 20 percent.

"Conservation of slateWaste slate is a problem of outstanding importance in the slate industry, for a very large proportion of all slate quarried is thrown on the waste heap. While many uses for waste slate have been found, the demand calls for merely a fraction of the present supply of unused material. If the slate industry is to increase in prosperity, the producer's energy must be directed toward the development of ways and means of reducing waste to the lowest possible point. The Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior has devoted much study to this problem and a recent bulletin ** contains a detailed discussion of the waste problem.Attention has recently been directed toward an improved method of cutting slate in quarries, a method that promises to reduce greatly the percentage of waste material. The method has been introduced since that bulletin was published, and this supplementary paper covers the details of the process.A reversion in method,In connection with this new mode of operation history is repeating itself in a very interesting way, for the old quarry bar used years ago with steam drills, and later discarded in favor of the channeling machine .and the hammer drill, has been salvaged from the scrap heap, and again put to active use. The occasion for its employment is an attempt to improve quarry methods by the substitution of drilling for channeling or blasting."

Significant advances in longwall mining technology and equipment have occurred over the last decade. By the late 1990s, longwall mine output accounted for 40 percent of all underground output in the U.S., and today longwall mines account for approximately 50 percent of coal produced underground in the United States. A 53 percent increase in average shift production rates has occurred over the last fifteen years. This increased longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced and controlling respirable coal dust provides an ongoing challenge for coal mine operators. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has completed a series of benchmark surveys at longwall operations across the country to identify current operating practices and the types of controls being used. Gravimetric and instantaneous dust sampling was completed to quantify dust generation from major sources on the longwall section and to determine the relative effectiveness of the different control technologies in use today. Substantial reductions in dust levels were realized at sampling locations on the face when compared longwall surveys conduct in the 1990?s. This paper summarizes the results from the underground dust surveys and discusses current longwall dust control technology and operating practices.

Thermoelectric and metal alloying applications have changed the status of tellurium from oversupply to under supply . In a search for new sources of this element in Arizona , Colorado , New Mexico , Utah , and neighboring states , the Bureau of Mines analyzed more than 200 samples and obtained the results of tellurium determinations by private companies on more than 500 samples from a wide variety of mineral - bearing deposits . The About 40 minerals containing tellurium have been reported , mainly tellu- rides of gold , silver , bismuth , mercury , lead , copper , iron , and nickel . minerals usually occur in small quantities and identification in ores is extremely difficult . Samples containing more than 0.1 percent tellurium were taken from the Hilltop and Memphis properties in Dona Ana County , N. Mex . , and the Silver King property in White Pine County , Nev . , where development was chiefly for base metals . The Lone Pine mine in Catron County , N. Mex . , and the Bambolla mine near Moctezuma , Sonora , Mexico are potential sources of native tellurium occurring in small but high- grade pods . Much of the production of tellurium has come as a byproduct of electro- lytic refining of copper and lead- zinc ores in Arizona , Colorado , New Mexico , and Utah . Base -metal ore deposits will continue to be the most important pri- mary source of tellurium , although the concentration in ores is nearly always less than 10 parts per million . Any significant increase in output of tellu- rium probably will be related to production and improved efficiency in smelt- ing and refining base - metal ores .

The autoignition temperatures (A.I.T.'s) of natural and synthetic lubricants in air were generally found to decrease with increasing pressure. Of the two types of fluids, synthetic and natural, studied in some detail, the phosphate esters had higher A.I.T.'s at any pressure between 1 and 200 atmospheres than the mineral oils. Most of the A.I.T. data obtained in this study obeyed the relationship predicted by Semenov's theory of ignition.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 151 natural gas samples from 19 States. Of the total samples, 138 were collected calendar year 1989. The remainder were collected earlier, but releases to were not received until 1989. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

Extensive Bureau of Mines laboratory testing has shown that electrokinetic densification can be an effective method for dewatering and consolidating unclassified metal mine mill tailings. The report describes results of a limited field test of this technique. Eighteen-cubic-yard concrete model stopes, 18 feet long by 6 feet deep by 56 inches wide, were filled with unclassified tailings slurry from a metal mine in the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, district. Five different tests were performed. They showed that a strong, dense, dewatered fill can be obtained in a reasonably short time using electrokinetics, with typical power consumption of 25 to 30 kW-hr/yd3 of densified fill. At present power costs in the Coeur d 'Alene district, this would amount to 10 to 12 cents/yd3.

The Coeur d'Alene minim, district of Shoshone County, Idaho, has been one of the largest and most active lead-silver producing districts in the United States for the last 40 years. The mines of the district enjoy exceptional natural advantages with respect to ventilation in that the veins apex high on mountain sides and are most often developed to considerable depths, up to 2,000 feet, by adit and crosscut tunnels under conditions that develop large natural draft pressures; the increase of temperature of the rock with increase of depth from surface in at a low rate; and the average surface temperatures are low. These natural conditions have, in the main, resulted in well-ventilated mines with low temperature conditions throughout. However, where the development has been carried to considerable depths below the lowest level of surface entry, natural-draft ventilation has proved inadequate, and mechanical ventilation systems have been installed on the three largest mines of the district. Local conditions, more particularly those in dead-ended working places, have also required auxiliary ventilation by will fan-pipe units in these and other mines. A particular feature of the district is the number of exceptionally long crosscut tunnels that have been driven to provide entry to vein systems from low points adjacent to milling and transporta¬tion facilities. Three of these tunnels are approximately 2 miles long, and lengths of 3,000 to 8,000 feet are quite common.

This paper, which describes mining methods and practices at the Rialto zinc-lead mine American Zinc, Lead & Smelting Co., in northeastern Oklahoma, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States, The Rialto mine is in the SE1/4 SW1/4 sec. 20 and the NW1/4 sec. 29, T. 29 N., R. 23 E., Ottawa County, Okla. (fig. 1). The 200-acre property is southwest of and adjacent to the town of Picher in the central part of the Picher field of the Tri-State zinc-lead mining district (fig. 2). Other mines of the company adjoin the Rialto on the east and south. Zinc-lead ores have been mined almost continuously from the Rialto tract since 1916. The property was acquired by American Zinc, Lead & Smelting Co. late in 1951, and the mine was operated thereafter by the Nellie B Division of that company until the end of 1955, when it was subleased to the Residue Mining Co.

It is generally recognized that the productivity and ultimate recovery of an oil well may be reduced as a result of reduction in permeability of the sand at the well bore by invasion of filtrates and clay particles from drilling fluids. As a means of determining whether a sand has been "damaged" from these sources, several investigators2 3 4 5/ have developed methods of analysis based on the rate of increase in bottom-hole pressure while a well is shut in. Because of growing recognition of the importance of completion practices as related to the quantity of oil that may be recovered from wells, the Bureau of Mines has studied completion practices in California and the Midcontinent area. Well-interference and pressure-buildup tests were completed Ear seven wells in the Scurry Reef field to determine the effective permeability in the reservoir.6/ Also, a study was made of the pressure-decline curves obtained from 35 water-input wells in 5 different production areas of northeastern Oklahoma and eastern Kansas.7/

Quickly and cheaply consolidate underground slimes to facilitate their use as backfill and permit their easy handling for other reasons. Approach: The slurry containing slimes is pumped into active stopes and electrokinetically dewatered to provide consolidated back fill. How It Works: To densify slimes electro-kinetically two electrodes are placed in the material to be dewatered and densified. Typically, the electrodes are pieces of wire mesh fencing. One is placed on the bottom, and the other is suspended in the slurry near the surface. Figure 1 is a simplified section of a test. A d-c voltage of 100 to 400 volts is applied across the slurry. This causes the solid particles which are in suspension in the water (usually these are negatively charged) to migrate toward the anode; simultaneously, the water moves toward the cathode. Water immediately adjacent to the negatively charged solid particle surfaces contains an excess of dissolved positive ions. Quantities of kaolin in Georgia in-contiguous or single bodies had been established by previous work to be sufficient for an alumina industry. The need for characterization of this kaolin to determine its suitability as an ore of aluminum resulted in the studies described herein. It was determined in an area roughly 7 x 27 miles, known as the Wrens district that approximately 5.9 billion short tons of kaolin averaging 35.55 percent A1203 exist in an essentially continuous clay body. The Macon-Sandersville district consists of discontinuous kaolin bodies averaging 35.28 percent A1203 with an average thickness of 28 feet. Tonnages for this district are not available. One hundred and twenty core samples of kaolin were analyzed for K20, CaO, MgO, Al203, T102, Cr203, Fe203, Si02, P205, and F. The P205 and F were analyzed by wet chemistry methods and the others by electron microprobe. Seventy-nine of the samples were from the Wrens district forty from the Sandersville-Macon district and one from the Andersonville district. Emission spectroscopic analyses were also made to qualitatively determine all elements present for each core. X-ray diffraction studies were made of each core to determine mineral species present. Scanning and transmission electron microscope pictures also are given for each I' core sample. Elevations, overburden thickness, and kaolin thickness are given for each core site as well as map locations. Isopachs for over-burden and kaolin thickness are given for the Wrens district.
