Platinum base alloys are very corrosion resistant and have got a high melting point. Similar to Ni-base superalloys, which are used for jet turbines, the hardening effect of the intermetallic L12Pt3Al phase is used to receive a material that is creep resistant at high temperatures. Chromium is added to the alloy system to stabilize the L12phase down to room temperature. With the right amount of nickel the misfit and shape of the precipitates can be controlled. Various alloy compositions have been melted and analysed. With scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) a microstructure can be observed, which is very similar to the one in Ni-base superalloys. To support alloy development with simulations, a thermodynamic database of the Pt-Al-Cr-Ni system is about to be established. The SEM and EDS measurements provide useful input to the thermodynamic optimization. Also many data from the literature have been used to receive the best approximation. The Cr-Pt binary phase diagram has been reassessed and the latest results of thermodynamic modelling are presented.

The Hydraulic Institute has completed the task of developing a new ANSI/HI standard 12.1-12.6 (2005) for rotodynamic (centrifugal) slurry pumps covering nomenclature, definitions, applications, and operation. The standard provides examples of the different slurry pump types and contains an extensive section on pump and slurry definitions. The effect of slurry on pump performance is covered along with the pumping of froth. Reference is also made to ANSI/HI standard 9.6.7 (2004), which contains anew method for pump performance correction when handling viscous fluids. Classification of slurry services is established and then is used to determine limitations on velocities and total head per pump in order to obtain acceptable wear performance. The new service class, head per stage and other limits are directly related to capital and other cost considerations that will affect solids transport system economics. The writers review the contents of the new standard, highlight the main points, and discuss the reason for the slurry classification, corresponding limits and expected implications, particularly with respect to operating costs of the pumps in solids transport systems.

Diamonds, an enigma in a mineral resource sense. Chemically, diamonds are no more than carbon crystals in a cubic system-formed one might add under conditions of great pressure and temperature. They have certain physical properties which are fairly unique. They are very hard, they have a high refractive index, they luminesce, some of them fluoresce, they have a high specific gravity, they don't wet and they are a good conductor of heat. In a way, a rather clinical set of qualities. Of course, these qualities are what give diamonds their use and their beauty. It is on the emotional side that they get complex and stir memories of legends, of beauty, of wealth and romance, of war, happiness, bad luck and curses. It is on the emotional side that the value of a diamond is established, if such a thing is possible. Diamonds are extremely varied, there are more than 5000 categories into which they are sorted, so there is room at each point across the spectrum for their individualities to emerge, and accordingly their attractiveness to each buyer is unique.

The Relix process is based on direct contact between an ion-exchange resin and undiluted pulp, thus avoiding prior solid-liquid separation. The resin particles float near the surface of the pulp, forming an inverted fluidized bed with the pulp flowing downwards. The basic idea was demonstrated on a full-scale pachuca tank at Stilfontein Gold Mine in 1970, followed by a small-scale demonstration run in a laboratory at the National Institute for Metallurgy. A pilot plant based on a throughput of 60 tons of ore per day was subsequently operated at West Driefontein Gold Mine for several periods over two years. Although the plant proved operable from a mechanical point of view, the metallurgical performance was not up to expectation. The basic cause of the poor metallurgical performace was shown to be backmixing of both the resin and the pulp between stages. The values obtained for resin losses were inconclusive. Further development of resin-in-pulp processes for the recovery of uranium should be focused on the performance of various techniques for the screening of resin from pulp.

This paper describes the application of a throughput-optimization strategy to a run-of-mine (ROM) mining circuit that is controlled by a multivariable controller. The objective of the optimization strategy is to maximize the ROM throughput at a specific product size. Results from long-term tests, which indicated how 'steady-state' optimization can be achieved, were used for the throughput optimization. This strategy increased the ROM throughput by 11,4 per cent. A mathematical relationship relating residue to grind can be used to calculate the economic benefits of stabilizing control. It was estimated that the throughput optimizer could result in an increase in gold production worth Rl,4 million per annum when waste rock is treated, and that stabilizing control could increase the treatment plants annual revenue by R150 000. If the extra milling capacity brought about by the optimizer is interpreted as a capital cost saving of 10 per cent on the price of a new mil, then a capital cost saving of RI million could result.

W. R. Lawrie (Member): As all the Institute members present are aware, the Ninth Commonwealth Mining and Metallurgical Congress was held in Great Britain from 3rd to 24th May, 1969. The Congress opened in London and the first week was devoted to technical sessions. Several receptions and other forms of entertainment were held in the evenings. The Congress was attended by some 1 200 delegates, many of whom were accompanied by their wives. As can be imagined a large organisation was needed to cater for all the whims of these delegates, to arrange accommodation and to provide transport for the technical trips, for the receptions and for the sight-seeing tours. Papers presented at the technical sessions proved of great interest. It was stimulating to hear of the developments taking place in the various branches of mining and metallurgy. The discussions which developed between men from so many different countries were thought provoking, led to new friendships and most of us made valuable contacts for the future. There were 141 papers presented in the one week. They were given in four separate halls with two, three and sometimes four papers coming up for discussion in each of the three sessions per day in each hall. Among the more interesting subjects were those concerning off-shore drilling and the facilities for production of petroleum and natural gas. Beach mining at Consolidated Diamond Mines drew a large audience. Automation, mechanization and other technical developments were well described and we were brought up to date with modern techniques of mineral prospecting. There was general discussion on the future of the mineral industries together with comments on the consumption and price trends of these metals and minerals. The future of uranium, of vital interest to us in South Africa, came in for much debate. During the first week, besides attending the technical sessions and seeing some of the sights of London, we were royally entertained. There was a banquet, attended by some I 400 people, where we were welcomed by Princess Alexandra, a reception by H.M. Government in the Banqueting House, and we were entertained at the House of Lords on a terrace overlooking the bustling and rather muddy river Thames. Then there was the visit to the Glyndebourne Opera. It is only in London that at 3 o'clock of an afternoon, nearly 1 000 people all togged up in dress suits and long dresses and carrying packets of sandwiches for supper could arrive at a station to catch a train, and not even cause a stir of interest or a raised eyebrow! This is the way we travelled 60 miles to the opera from London. Surely there can be no more picturesque or romantic a setting for an opera than this large 400-year old red brick manor house nestling in the green valleys of the unspoilt Sussex countryside. It was a glorious evening and though we returned somewhat late and tired, not one of us would have missed this experience. After the first week in London there was a choice of tours of one week to London and the Home Counties, Cornwall, a Geological tour to Scotland, South Wales, and North England. These were followed by further one week tours to Yorkshire and Lancashire, Scotland, West Country and Midlands, a Geological tour of Wales, and a Mining and Geological tour to Jurassic Iron Mines. We then returned to London for the final session and closing banquet. Post-congress tours were arranged to Europe and to Ireland. It was a wonderful Congress, a great experience, we made many friends and may there be many more congresses! . L. W. P. van den Bosch (Member): Much has already been said in appreciation of the excellent organisation and arrangements made for the delegates who attended this Congress. This report is confined to a brief discussion of the personal impressions gained from the papers presented and the technical visits attended. The papers covered a wide variety of subjects ranging from highly theoretical observations to practical descriptions of operations. There were three main themes, VIZ: 1. The attention given to research and its forceful application to practical operation. 2. A steady development in mechanization and automation leading to savings in manpower. 3. Improvization, modernization and adaptation of exisitng facilities. Thoughts on these themes can best be illustrated by comments on some of the industries visited. COAL The National Coal Board (N.C.B.) has been most progressive and all of us have heard of the Bevercotes Colliery with its completely automatic mining and coal handling equipment. This was not, unfortunately, on show but there is no doubt that this is one of the greatest advances in coal mining leading towards continuous production. Coal in Britain is fighting for its life against oil, North Sea gas, imported gases and nuclear power. Output is dropping, the less efficient collieries are closing down and efficiencies are steadily rising as the following tabulation indicates: In 1931: 1 million men produced 300 million tons of coal In 1947: 0.7 million men produced 230 million tons of coal In 1968: 0.4 million men produced 160 million tons of coal

To be held from the 9th to 14th April, 1972, in Johannesburg, South Africa. GENERAL INFORMATION The first symposium in the series was staged by the University of Arizona in 1961. Since then Stanford University, Colorado School of Mines, Pennsylvania State University and the Society of Mining Engineers of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers have acted together with the University of Arizona as co-sponsors of the series. The 9th Symposium in 1970 was sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy together with McGill University and Ecole Poly technique in Montreal. The 10th Symposium, the first to be held outside the North American continent, is being organised by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the South African Council for Automation and Computation) in close collaboration with the previous co-sponsors. OBJECTIVES Mineral ventures increase in scale and complexity. The planning and control of these projects requires more and more sophisticated techniques. The intention of the symposium is to pool and exchange experience and knowledge and also to discuss new and potential developments. The papers presented in the main sessions, which will extend over one week, will together indicate progress which has been made in the successful application of operations research, mathematical, statistical and computer methods in each of the various aspects of operation in the mineral industry. A coherent account will be developed by consideration, in consecutive sessions, of the stages through which mineral prospects evolve in the course of their life. Primary aims are thus to stimulate discussion in depth of previous applications, to highlight current trends and to provide guidelines for future developments. PARTICIPATION The intention is to bring together persons responsible for managing the various operations in the mineral industry and the workers engaged in the development of mathematical and computer methods relevant thereto. SYMPOSIUM TOPICS 1. Market Analysis-demand and supply trends, models of mineral markets, price prediction. 2. Exploration and ore reserve estimation--exploration strategies, choice of drilling and sampling patterns, quantification of geological information, geo-statistical analysis, ore reserve assessment. Storage and retrieval of associated data. 3. Project design and analysis-influence on viability and risk of capitalisation, scale and method of operation, processing, uncertainties in design premises. 4. Planning of operation-planning and scheduling of construction, of development and of depletion of ore reserves. Logistics, rock mechanics and ventilation. 5. Control of operations-financial, production, cost and quality control as applied to both mining and processing. Flow and processing of relevant information. CALL FOR PAPERS An invitation is extended to intending authors to submit a synopsis, in 200 to 300 words, of papers which would develop the themes outlined above. The Programme Sub-Committee will choose, on the basis of these synopses, some 20 to 30 authors who will be invited to submit papers. Selection will be aimed at the provision of a coherent structure. Other authors may be invited to submit short papers either as contributions to the primary papers or for brief discussion in ancillary sessions which will be scheduled to follow on the main sessions. The official language of the symposium will be English. TOURS AND VISITS A choice of visits to relevant local undertakings on a day during the course of the symposium will be available to participants. These will include a deep level gold mine. A tour which will include mineral projects of interest and the Kruger National Game Park will be arranged in the week following the symposium. LADIES' PROGRAMME Arrangements will be made for the reception and entertainment of ladies. ACCOMMODATION Accommodation will be available at hotels convenient to the symposium venue. The cost of reasonable hotel accommodation in Johannesburg is in the range R5 to RIO (7 to 14 U.S. dollars) per person per night. All reservations and associated arrangements may be made through agents to be appointed by the organisers in due course. FEES AND COSTS Symposium fees will not exceed R70 (100 U.S. dollars). These will include registration, one copy of the published proceedings, a set of pre-prints of the main papers, teas and lunches during the course of the symposium, and the various official social events as well as the mid-week visits. The multidimensional characterisation of processes based on various particle properties is a key requirement for a detailed prediction on certain process streams. To access the relevant particle properties (e.g. particle size, particle density and mineral content) automated mineralogy (i.e. Mineral Liberation Analyser) is applied. The kernel density estimation is used to transfer the received discrete particle data into continuous distributions without the necessity of binning the information and the related loss of information. From these continuous distributions, multidimensional separation curves are estimated. The uncertainty of these representations is tracked via bootstrap resampling. For the evaluation of the separation efficiency of the multidimensional separation curves, the statistical entropy is calculated. The statistical entropy represents a local (for each property combination) as well as a global (for the investigated property range) measure of separation efficiency and can be weighted with various property distributions (e.g. mass or mineral mass distribution) to allow for a comparison of different parameter settings and processes. With the help of a case study of a dry magnetic separation of a cassiterite bearing skarn ore from the Erzgebirge (Germany), the methodology is presented and the results are discussed in detail. Historically, engineers and scientists, particularly those involved in the coal-mining industry, have been slow to adopt statistical methods. However, the need to obtain the maximum information .from expensive exploration and development programmes, and the current focus on total quality management, have led to a change in perceptions if classical statistical and geostatistical methods and their application as planning tools. Some if the underlying issues associated with the generally poor communications between statisticians and engineers/physical scientists, which contribute to some if the misconceptions relating to statistical methods, are discussed The potentially profitable application if a number if statistical techniques in the fields if geological evaluation and mine planning! development is also reviewed, with specific reference to the coal industry.

Corrosion of copper in aerated acidic chloride pickling (0.5 M HCl) solutions and its inhibition by 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole-5-thiol (ATT) have been investigated using electrochemical techniques and weight-loss measurements, along with Raman spectroscopy. Electrochemical measurements for copper after varied immersion periods of 0, 24 and 48h showed that the presence of ATT and the increase of its concentration significantly decrease cathodic, anodic, corrosion (jCorr) currents and corrosion rates (KCorr), as well as the dissolution currents at 300 mV vs. Ag/AgCl, while increase polarization resistance (Rp), degree of surface coverage (?) and inhibition efficiency (IE%) to a great extent. Weight-loss measurements after different immersion periods of 6 ~ 48h revealed that the dissolution of copper decreased to a minimum and the corresponding IE% increased with ATT concentration increases. The detection of ATT molecules on the copper surface by Raman spectroscopy indicated that inhibition of copper corrosion is achieved by strong adsorption of ATT molecules onto the copper surface. A novel mathematical model is presented which describes the behaviour of beds of particles, of uniform size and shape but different densities, during autogenous separations. The approach used in the formulation of the dispersion model is a phenomenological one based on a statistical view, which leads to a diffusion-like representation of the autogenous-separation process. Although the model currently considers only density-related phenomena, it accounts quantitatively not only for the density-segregation aspects of the process but for the interactions between the particles. Quantitative predictions of the dispersion model are compared with the results obtained in tests using a specially constructed experimental batch jig, and it is shown that the model provides an adequate quantitative description of the process for particles of uniform size and shape. It is pointed out that, for the description of more complicated autogenous separations, a more rigorous formulation of the particle drag and density-segregation terms will have to be incorporated into the dispersion model. Nonetheless it is concluded that the model as presented in this paper provides not only a novel insight into the mechanisms of autogenous separations but a means by which to analyse similar systems.

General aluminium corrosion charts based on 1100 alloy listing product and temperature have been developed by AFSA, mainly from available sources. The categories of corrosion expectation are fairly wide. As a result the charts are more useful in indicating what is not suited as distinct from what is. The question of how to develop useful information is assessed. Having discarded improbable options one is left with the need to refine the possible. Within each alloy group corrosion potential differs. From an engineering application point of view, the corrosion resisting marine alloys, the 5xxx series show increasing corrosion as the percentage of Magnesium increases. An important issue is that as the welding filler used for 5xxx series is Mg rich (to avoid hot cracking), the filler is likely to show the weakest resistance. In addition, when subjected to fatigue loading, the preference for critical joints is to dress the joint to the level of the base material. Overheating of the weld extends the HAZ zone and weakens the material as Mg moves to the grain boundaries. Indicator chart refinement approaches suited to aluminium use in commercial transport are discussed.

"The size distribution of the muckpile formed as a result of open pit blasting operations has a considerable effect on the efficiency of loading, hauling, and crushing. Various researchers have developed specialized computer software that uses image analysis methods for determining the size distribution of the muckpile. However, these methods have some limitations. One of the most important of these limitations is that the very fine fragments in the muckpile cannot be used in the size distribution calculation. In this study, 18 test blasts in total were carried out in two limestone quarries belonging to Batiçim Corp. in Izmir, Turkey. A new model was developed in order to ensure that very fine fragments are used in the size distribution calculation. The size distributions of the test blasts were calculated by both the Wipfrag computer program and the new model. Correlations were established between the muckpile size distributions determined by both methods and the parameters determining the efficiency of the loader. IntroductionThe size distribution of the muckpile formed as a result of open pit blasting operations has a considerable effect on the efficiency of loading, hauling, and crushing. Various researchers have established certain correlations for predicting the efficiency of the operations according to the muckpile size distribution so that production can be carried out economically (Tunstall and Bearman, 1997; Nielsen and Kristiansen, 1996; Workman and Eloranta, 2004; Michaud and Blanchet, 1996; Frimpong, Kabongo, and Davies, 1996; Osanloo and Hekmat, 2005; Molotilov et al., 2010). In these studies, the 50% passing size (X50) is generally used. These methods rely on the correct measurement of the size distribution of the muckpile formed by the blast. The most reliable measurement method would be to subject the entire muckpile to a sieve analysis, but this is obviously impracticable. Therefore, computational method based on image analysis have been developed. These include IPACS (Dahlhielm, 1996), Tucips (Havermann and Vogt, 1996), Fragscan (Schleifer and Tessier, 1996), Cias (Downs and Kettunen, 1996), GoldSize (Kleine annd Cameron, 1996), Wipfrag (Maerz, Palangio, and Franklin, 1996), Split Desktop (Kemeny, 1994), PowerSieve (Chung and Noy, 1996), and Fragalyst (Raina et al., 2002). In these methods, the size limits of the fragments forming the material are determined by image analysis on photographs of the muckpile. However, the computer software has some limitations. It does not take into account the third dimension of the muckpile, nor the size distribution of very fine fragments. In particular, the fragment size ranges below 2.5 to 3 cm cannot be determined, and therefore these cannot be included in the muckpile size distribution. However, the muckpile formed by a bench blast contains a wide range of particle sizes (Tosun et al., 2015)."

The International Colloquium on Developments in Froth Flotation, which replaced the Annual University of Cape Town (UCT)/University of Stelenbosch (US) Minerals Processing Symposium, was held at the Van Riebeeck Hotel in Gordon's Bay on 3rd and 4th August, 1989. The Colloquium attracted 150 delegates from the mining, metallurgical, and chemical industries, including 9 from overseas.

The mining industry remains the backbone of many economies in the developing world. Its resurgence in Ghana since 1989 was driven by the global paradigm which emphasizes private sector-led development as the engine of economic growth in developing countries. The historical importance of mining in the economic development of Ghana is evident in the country?s colonial name, Gold Coast (Akabzaa T. and Darimani A., 2001). Ghana earned $2.5 billion from mineral exports in 2007. 20,000 people are employed in large-scale mining whilst 500,000 are employed in the small-scale sector. Mining contributes about 7% of Ghana?s total corporate tax earnings, 41% of total exports, 12% of revenue collected by the Internal Revenue Service and 5% of Gross Domestic Product (Ghana Chamber of Mines, 2008). Gold dominates the mining sector and the country is Africa?s second largest gold producer after South Africa. Surface Mining, which refers to a method of extracting minerals from the earth by their removal from an open pit or borrows, requires a large tract of land for its operations (Wikipedia, 2008). There is therefore a continuous divergence of interest between land required for surface mining and other land uses such as farming and housing, among others. In recent years, surface mining has been promoted in many mining countries because of the following reasons: ?Cost considerations compared to underground mining; ?Safety considerations, compared to underground mining; ?Low grade ore which requires processing huge quantities; ?Location of the ore bodies; and ?Competition among gold producing countries for investors. This paper looks at the socio-economic impacts and challenges of surface mining by using Gold Fields Ghana Ltd. Tarkwa, Ghana as a case study. The company has a concession of about 208 sq km located in the heart of the Wassa communities in the Western Region of Ghana and undertakes surface mining like most of the other mining companies in the country. Gold Fields, Tarkwa mine produces 700,000 ounces of gold a year with the potential of increasing this output to 800,000 ounces after its current expansion programme. Some of the effects of surface mining identified were: 1. Relocation/Resettlement of host communities and its negative effects; 2. Disturbance to Flora and Fauna; 3. Disturbance to Sacred Places; 4. Land Degradation; 5. Noise and Air Pollution; and 6. Water Pollution. This paper sought to investigate the measures put in place by the government and the Gold Fields Ghana Ltd. to mitigate the above effects in order to ensure peaceful coexistence between the mining company and its host communities. It concludes that most mining companies presume the provision of socio-economic development in mining communities will lead to the company securing a social license to operate. This however is not true but rather effective community relations combined with socio-economic development. According to Gold Fields Ghana Ltds. model, this involves continuous community engagement, conflict resolution and comprehensive environmental monitoring programme which will all lead to effective community relations. The strategies to ensure socio-economic development involves community development programme, livelihood restoration programme and community training and employment. All these will then lead to sustainable development which will ensure the company?s social license to operate. Gold Fields? model is in line with the principles of responsible mining. With this model, the community feels they are part of the company and the social license of the company is guaranteed. Gold Fields? model, which has been tried and tested for the past five years, could serve as a template with suitable modification for local conditions for other mining countries where surface mines operate.
