Amax Coal Industries Inc.'s Delta Mine is a medium-sized. high-sulfur coal producer that has lived up to the challenges posed by nearly six decades of a highly competitive domestic coal market. The mine now faces one of its biggest challenges - the same one staring at the dozens of other high-sulfur producers in the Midwest - the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. The 59-year-old mine, located in the coal fields of southern Illinois, has remained one of the state's oldest continuously operating mines by rolling with the ups and downs of the coal market and by incorporating new technologies and innovative productivity improvements into its operation.

Creation of needed new resources will be accomplished mainly by imaginative and diligent geologic exploration because geologic availability is the key determinant of future mineral supply. Adequate resources of most commodities can be made available for the rest of this century and beyond if they are discovered. Thus conversion of hypothetical and speculative resources into available reserves will provide the principal challenge to earth scientists. Additional problems now compete for our attention. First is a challenge to discover more resources than have been found to date for domestic needs as world-wide demands increase exponentially and as easily found high-grade deposits are rapidly being depleted. New ways to find new types of deposits are required. Second, the United States, a resource importer, increasingly is challenged for access to foreign supplies through stiffening competition and economic or expropriation sanctions. Balancing needs for mineral supply and environmental protection is a third challenge. Geologic explorers must consider statutory as well as economic and technologic requirements, controlled access to public and private lands, competition with urban sprawl or wilderness, limitations on discovery, appraisal and mining methods, and restoration of mined areas. Finally, is the challenge to temper public and private attitudes and assure that decisions bearing on resource problems are based on comprehensive credible facts. While striving to maintain and improve the standard of living, many Americans appear to disdain and mistrust those organizations that provide their material where-withal. Meeting these challenges effectively, and in time, will require careful appraisal of the resource system and the joint efforts of industry, university, and government earth science research.

Phosphogypsum is a byproduct of the manufacture phosphoric acid. There are approximately one billion tons of phosphogypsum stored in stacks in northern and central Florida. The Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) is investigating potential uses of phosphogypsum. These include using phosphogypsum as a road base material, as a soil amendment in agriculture, as a daily cover in landfills, and as a construction material. The results of this research will be presented and will be discussed in light of regulatory barriers to the use of phosphogypsum.

Deposits of rare earth elements (REE) are found in NM, but they have not been important exploration targets in past years because demand has been met elsewhere. However, with the projected increase in demand and potential lack of available production from China, the New Mexico deposits are being re-examined for their potential. REE-Th-U veins are found in the Gallinas, Caballo, Capitan, and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Past production of bastnaesite has come from the Gallinas Mountains. Carbonatites are found in the Lemitar and Chupadera Mountains, Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills, Lobo Hill, and Monte Largo (Sandia Mountains). Although carbonatites have not been found in the Gallinas Mountains, they are suspected to occur in the subsurface based upon mineralogy/alteration. Disseminated Y-Zr deposits in syenite are found at Pajarito Mountain, Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation near Ruidoso. In 1990, Molycorp, Inc. reported historic resources of 2.7 million short tons grading 0.18% Y2O3 and 1.2% ZrO2 as disseminated eudialyte. Two additional deposit types have potential for REE in New Mexico: Cretaceous heavy mineral, beach-placer sandstone deposits and pegmatites. Exploration is ongoing in the Lemitar, Gallinas, and Cornudas Mountains.

The telephone rings at 3:20 a.m. An exasperated voice on the other end says, “There has been a mine explosion at Mine No. 5 and we have not heard from three units of men.” Twenty-three minutes later, the phone rings again and another panicked voice says, “There is something wrong at the slurry impoundment, the pool level has just dropped five feet and we are trying to figure out what is wrong” Thirty minutes later, the mobile phone rings. An excited security guard says, “We have reports of thick black water running down the right fork and left fork of Straight Creek and both seem to be rising in the banks.” If this is not enough excitement, the mobile phone rings again. A stressed company official says, “I just heard a report that black slurry is running out of the portals of XYZ Co. No. 2 Mine, which is adjacent to our No. 5 Mine.” Is this all some kind of dream or nightmare? More importantly, though, if this happens, what do you do? Most people think: “It can’t happen to me.” But mine explosions do happen, slurry impoundments can rupture and creeks can flood with black water causing damage to others, including competitors. A mine’s response must be quick, cool-headed, calculated and effective. This article examines the issues, concerns and ramifications of this hypothetical disaster. The authors then present a systematic crisis-management response.

This paper provides an overview of the current use of backfill for ground support in underground metal mines in the United States and a summary of recent accident data reported for these mines by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Backfill mines comprise a major part of the underground metal mining industry and are particularly important in terms of the fatalities and injuries impacting this workforce. Ground falls are the leading cause of fatal accidents at these mines accounting for 50 percent of the total fatalities (4 out of the 8 fatalities that occurred from 2006 through second quarter of 2011). MSHA reported several different types of accidents involving backfill at these mines. While backfill ground falls do not occur frequently, these accidents result in a much higher proportion of fatalities than host rock ground falls. Backfill ground fall accidents are especially hazardous in underhand cut-and-fill mining operations where employees work directly beneath the backfill. An analysis of recent MSHA accident data supports the need for further cooperative research with the mining industry to identify and address ground control problems in underground metal mines using backfill.

Industrial minerals play a central and dual role in the sustainable development (SD) of natural resources. Over the past decade the mining industry has increasingly focused on sustainably extracting and processing industrial minerals. This trend has been driven by higher energy costs, diminishing water resources and sensitivity towards environmental stewardship. Industrial minerals have been used throughout human history as low cost, naturally occurring, materials. Today they are critical components of recycled packaging, energy efficient building materials, light weight paper coatings, and other products critical to the responsible utilization of global resources. As industrial minerals become more widely used in ?green? products, mining companies have established best practices for the sustainable management of industrial minerals mining and processing. These management practices include reducing energy consumption, minimizing water usage, increasing waste recovery through recycling and process optimization, and maximizing the amount of ore extracted per acre of disturbed land. With the commitment to SD principles, quantitative methods for objectively measuring SD performance have become increasingly important. Measuring sustainability impact is a valuable tool for effectively applying SD principles and for making choices that balance sustainable development against other business objectives. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND MINING Sustainable development is a term that has become a common part of our lexicon; however, it has multiple meanings and interpretations leading to a sometimes confusing and contradictory array of definitions. The absence of a single, precise definition reflects the fact that SD is a broad concept or paradigm that offers guiding principles as opposed to a specific set of criteria or regulations enforceable by government or other oversight agencies. While a principle based conceptual approach allows businesses to broadly apply SD practices that are tailored to their specific situation, it has also led the public to sometimes view voluntary corporate SD programs with a degree of skepticism (Walker and Howard 2002). This is particularly true in the mining industry. One reason for this skepticism is that the relationship between SD and mining is misunderstood and to many, sustainably developing non-renewable mineral resources is a contradiction (Rajaram et al. 2005). However, this view takes a very narrow interpretation of the tenets of SD. The second is that mining carries a legacy of poor environmental stewardship that does not accurately reflect current corporate environmental practices Many minerals companies have adopted the Brundtland Comission?s definition of SD (United Nations 1987): ?? development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs?. This definition is very broad and can be interpreted in a number of ways. It provides a general context for sustainable development and is not intended to provide detailed guidelines addressing specific aspects of sustainable development. To fill this gap the following SD principles were drafted by the international minerals community in 2003 (ICMM 2003): 1. Implement and maintain ethical business practices and sound systems of corporate governance. 2. Integrate sustainable development considerations within the corporate decision-making process. 3. Uphold fundamental human rights and respect cultures, customs and values in dealings with employees and others who are affected by our activities. 4. Implement risk management strategies based on valid data and sound science. 5. Seek continual improvement of our health and safety performance. 6. Seek continual improvement of our environmental performance. 7. Contribute to conservation of biodiversity and integrated approaches to land use planning. 8. Facilitate and encourage responsible product design, use, re-use, recycling and disposal of our products. 9. Contribute to the social, economic and institutional development of the communities in which we operate. 10. Implement effective and transparent engagement, communication and independently verified reporting arrangements with our stakeholders. These guidelines insure that SD concepts are applied equally across the industry while setting a clear performance standard and benchmark against which to evaluate success. By adopting these principles and issuing the Milos Statement (http://www.sdimi.org/milos_decl_October%206_2003.pdf), which provides a more detailed vision for integrating SD into everyday business operations, the minerals industry has embraced SD as a core corporate value. The unifying and holistic approach embodied in SD principles impacts the entire mine to market life cycle and addresses the economic, environmental and social consequences of mining. INDUSTRIAL MINERALS The world economy relies heavily on minerals; they are essential to economic prosperity and the quality of life. Industrial minerals are non-metallic, non-fuel minerals that provide the raw materials for a vast range of products used in most every aspect of daily life. They are mined and processed worldwide and they span the spectrum from relatively low value, high volume commodities (e.g. common clay, crushed stone) that are usually mined locally to high value, low volume specialty materials that are sourced from unique one of a kind deposits (e.g. barite, talc, mica). High volume commodity mining operations are often located near the end use market which, in most cases, means areas of high population density where construction and other urban activities drive demand. In these situations the strict adherence to SD principles is particularly critical as these are highly visible operations that must meet the public?s demand for good corporate citizenship. These operations are similar to chemical or other manufacturing facilities that operate near population centers. Future haulage cost projections led Foster Yeoman Limited into developing a fully mobile crushing and conveying system at its Torr Works quarry in Somerset, England. The purpose-built system has an effective throughput of 2,500 tonnes/hour and features an Orenstein and Koppel (O & K) manufactured walking frame, a Fuller-Traylor type 54 X 74 TC gyratory crusher, and unique mobile conveyor modules designed and manufactured by Foster Yeoman. Used in a single-bench operation in this 6 million-tonne per annum limestone aggregate quarry, the system is fed at the production face by 2 Caterpillar 992C loading shovels. The entire system is moved on a daily basis following production face locations.

"Seamount cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (hereafter crusts) are authigenic iron/manganese hydroxide/oxide deposits formed from direct precipitation of minerals from seawater onto a hard substrates surface. Crusts contain significant concentrations of cobalt, manganese, nickel, copper, platinum, rare earth elements and other valuable metallic elements, with potential economic value. Regulations on Prospecting and Exploration for Cobalt-rich Ferromanganese Crusts in the "Area" was approved by the Council and Assembly of the International Seabed Authority in July 2012, China and Japan became the first to obtain exploration contracts, which were signed respectively in April and January 2014.The crusts form pavements and are mainly attached tightly to the surface of the substrate, and less commonly crusts coat talus debris located on the surface of sediment and substrate rock. During prospecting, crust sampling methods mainly include dredge, TVgrab and sub-bottom coring system. During exploration, the sub-bottom coring will be the dominant method for crust sampling, and if necessary, ROV sampling will be used. Usually the samples collected by different methods provide a larger quantity than samples needed for chemical analysis, but sampling quantity is a question that should be considered for mineral resource evaluation that how to ensure that the sampling is representation for the sampling station. Using the samples collected by China from Pacific seamounts, according to the designed analysis flow and Qeqott formula (Q=Kd2), the minimum reliable assay sample quantity ("MRASQ") of crusts for Mn, Co, and Ni are obtained. In the case of the sample homogeneous fines at ~100 mesh size (~0.15 mm), MRASQ for Mn, Co, Ni is respectively 4.5 g, 9 g and 9 g. This result provides the basic data for crusts resources evaluation."

Theoretical and analytical analyses of three mitigative measures- plane fitting method, trenching, and tension cable led to the development of a total protection plan to eliminate or reduce damages to the residential structures subjected to surface movements caused by underground longwall mining. The protection plan was applied to twelve residential houses and two external garages. The success rate is overwhelming. This paper describes the methods employed for protection and results of those case studies.

In mechanized tunnelling operations performance, consumption and safety are main factors for jobsites. One of the most important components effecting these factors, especially in slurry TBM operations, are Slurry Treatment Plants (STPs). Inadequate/ suboptimally dimensioned and designed STPs create bottlenecks for tunnelling operation and jeopardize time schedules and performance. Inefficiently planned STPs could drastically increase consumption figures such as electrical power, bentonite, water and polymers, etc. Inaccurately selected and treated suspension properties can cause a high-risk potential for the whole job. This paper debates the relevant key parameters for STPs from start to finish of a project and its results in influencing factors from the manufacturer´s point of view.

The observation method is a design optimization approach for the drill and blast method in tunneling. This method includes first identifying the hazard scenarios through site investigation, formulating suitable solutions, obtaining feedback during construction, and finally using that data to optimize the design methods. This paper illustrates the application of the observational method for T-48, a railway tunnel project in the Himalayas. It is a 10.2 km long tunnel with a parallel escape tunnel and 26 cross passages. The use of observational methods in this project optimized the overall tunnel design and considerably saved the overall project cost.

The Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration held the 12th MPD Student Poster Contest on March 2, 2022, during the MINEXCHANGE 2022 SME Annual Conference & Expo. The event showcased the work of 32 graduate and undergraduate students from U.S. and international institutions. The contest began in January when the students submitted one‐page abstracts for judging. In February, they prepared and presented posters that explained their research, and each student had five minutes to explain their research to a panel of judges during the conference. Recognizing the students’ efforts in working hard on their research topics and setting aside time to complete the necessary steps to enter the poster contest, the MPD provides monetary rewards to all participants. For graduate students, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, and third through seventh places $200 each, and for undergraduate students, first place receives $1,000 and second place $500. The main authors of nonplacing entries receive $125 each. Participation in the contest includes a free ticket to the MPD Luncheon, where the winners are announced.

In earlier work it has been shown that paper filler clay products can be obtained from primary kaolin deposits of Minnesota. The objective of the current work was to reduce silica and iron contaminants and to maximize kaolin recovery to higher value products suitable for paper coating. This results in achieving a finer and cleaner product conforming to paper coating specifications. Cationic flotation and high gradient magnetic separation were used to remove free silica and iron, respectively, while attrition grinding and ultrasonics have been examined for particle size reduction. The results of this work are presented and discussed particularly with respect to application-oriented product properties. Budgetary estimates are presented for a 200,000 ton/year processing plant based on the process flowsheet developed and optimized by the study.

The Gilt Edge Superfund Site is a former heap-leach gold mine that currently is being remediated in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Mine runoff water is treated before release from the site. The field pH, before treatment, is about 3, and the water contains arsenic and some heavy metals, in addition to sulfate concentrations of about 1400 to 1500 mg/L. In the Keystone area of the Black Hills, naturally occurring arsenic has been detected in ground-water samples from wells. Keystone City Well #4, which is not used currently, showed arsenic concentrations of 36 parts per billion (ppb) and sulfate concentrations of about 19 mg/L. With field samples of water from these sites, a limestone-based method was successful in reducing arsenic and heavy metals concentrations. The results are significant because previous research with the limestone-based method mainly had involved samples prepared with distilled water in the laboratory, in which interference of other ions such as sulfate did not occur. The research indicates the potential for broader field applications of the limestone-based removal method.

Selection of tunneling method, specially the use of shielded machines for application in deep rock tunnels can be heavily impacted by presence of ground convergence and squeezing conditions. Tunnel convergence is a function of ground conditions (i.e., rock mass behavior, groundwater, in-situ stresses), size of the opening, and TBM operational parameters. The case study of Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project in Central Iran, which is under construction using a double shield TBM, is used to examine the effect of rock parameters on tunnel convergence and hence on the need for over excavation and shield lubrication to avoid problems with the shield getting stuck. Although it is impractical to perform a continuous assessment of rock mass conditions within the shield or in the lined tunnel, results of field observations and subsequent studies show that the amount of the tunnel convergence has direct correlation with the percentage of fines and large rock fragments in the muck and TBM thrust/torque/ROP. These relationships have been examined and will be presented in this paper.

A good quality assurance program at a coal mine or power plant is accurate, timely and consistent. The quality analysis is accurate due to a complete sampling of the coal stream loaded into the unit train. The sample analysis is accurate because standardized testing procedures are applied. Once an analysis is completed, the results must be communicated to the electric utility in a timely manner. The electric utility needs the results to better manage the coal inventory at its power plants. A quality assurance program can also help a mine deliver a consistent product to a utility's power plants. The importance of accuracy, timeliness and consistency are based on major changes that are taking place in the electric utility industry.

In processing coal, the low concentrate value requires high capacity production and sharp classification/separation techniques to reduce specific production costs. The allflux separator meets these criteria with a unique two-stage design. Through a combination of rising current and fluidized bed technologies, the allflux has extended the state of the art by expanding the particle size range that can be efficiently processed. Using concepts that have proven successful in processing concrete sands, small-scale industrial testing with coal feed stocks looks very promising. Attractive applications for the allflux are projected in fine coal recovery from old settling ponds or as a retrofit in existing fines circuits.

By using the data of E.A. Hersam and F.C. Bond's equation for energy consumption in comminution, a method was developed to analyze the performance of industrial jaw crushers. The study showed that industrial jaw crushers are generally operated below capacity. The study also showed that industrial jaw crushers generally have sufficient installed power to operate at, full capacity. The method presented can be used to estimate the capacities and power requirements of jaw crushers.

This study probed the selective separation of lanthanum and yttrium in a nitrate medium in the presence of aluminum and calcium impurities using di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA). The factors studied in a central composite design (CCD) included extractant concentration, pH, concentration ratio of total impurities to rare earth elements, and interaction of these three factors. The extraction mechanism and types of extracted metal-containing species were delineated by the slope analysis method. The obtained thermodynamic data showed that lanthanum and yttrium extraction by the D2EHPA extractant was exothermic. The extraction of both rare earth elements was accompanied by an entropy reduction. The negative magnitude of ΔS in yttrium extraction reaction suggests stronger D2EHPA-Y(III) complexation relative to La(III). As entropy decreased and enthalpy increased, the extraction process became unspontaneous. Using the proposed flowsheet, lanthanum and yttrium products with > 90% purity were obtained.
