"The reactivity of an enargite mineral electrode was investigated spectroelectrochemically under conditions typically found in alkaline sulfide leach solutions, with pH 11-13 and Na2S additions of 50 and 250 gL-1. A bulk enargite electrode was cycled between 0 and -1,000 mV for each set of solution conditions. Raman spectroscopy was used to determine and compare surface formations against species in mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams generated using STABCAL. Previously, it was determined that arsenic could be selectively leached under alkaline conditions at an average solution potential of -300mV, across the pH range 11-13. Operating under such conditions allowed for the selective leaching of arsenic with elemental sulfur formation. From several of the voltammograms obtained during this current testing, the formation of elemental sulfur appeared at increasingly reducing conditions with increasing sulfide concentration. At high concentrations, copper started to dissolve, possibly as a bisulfide complex, reducing the selectivity of the leach, unlike previous studies. However, the presence of the higher sulfide concentration is also anticipated to prevent passivation by consuming any surface formation of elemental sulfur. This study provides insight into the operating parameters of alkaline sulfide leaching in regards to the selectivity of arsenic leaching, as well as guidance for control of reagents and solution potential and, of course, the need for water treatment afterwards.IntroductionEnvironmental limitations on the pyrometallurgical processing of arsenic-bearing concentrates have forced operations to consider other solutions. Attempts to hydrometallurgically process enargite (Cu3AsS4) fall into two categories: the co-dissolution of arsenic and copper under acidic conditions, and the selective leaching of arsenic under basic conditions. The authors believe that the selective leaching of arsenic is more amenable because it produces a solid copper phase, preferably chalcocite (Cu2S) or covellite (CuS) that could then be processed using conventional methods already in place in the copper and gold industries. Potential leaching methods include alkaline sulfide leaching (Achimovicovica et al., 1999; Anderson and Twidwell, 2008a,b; Tongamp et al., 2009 and 2010), hypochlorite leaching (Vinals et al., 2003; Curreli et al., 2005; Mihaljovic et al., 2007), ammoniacal leaching (Gajam and Raghavan, 1983), and acid leaching (Gow et al., 2014b) with or without fine grinding to mechanically activate the enargite surface and increase normally slow leach reaction kinetics (Achimovicova et al., 1999; Balaz et al., 2000; Balaz and Achimovicova, 2006). The high temperature lubricant molybdenite, MoS2, is usually produced by a complex sequence of processes involving mineral dressing of molybdenite concentrates followed by leaching with hydrofluoric acid to remove abrasive impurities such as silica (1). Many attempts have been made, mostly by techniques involving, direct fusion of molybdenum compounds with sulphur, to produce synthetic molybdenite. However, apart from some experiments of geochemical interest (2) in which aqueous solutions of sodium sulphomolybdate, Nat MoS4, were decomposed under pressure at temperatures between 300°C and 700°C, no attempts to produce the mineral by hydrometallurgical procedures have been reported. Since molybdenite is nominally a compound of tetravalent molybdenum with sulphur, and the most common state of molybdenum is +6, production of molybdenite is likely to involve reduction and sulphidization. This study aimed to remove the contaminants in quartz sand by using an eco-friendly method and to obtain high-purity quartz. For this purpose, ultrasound-assisted acid leaching was applied. Equal amounts of a mixture of diluted hydrochloric and oxalic acids were used as the solvent. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used for optimizing, modeling, and predicting the experimental parameters. The correlation coefficient ( R2) of the proposed quadratic model for the relationship between iron removal yield and test parameters was calculated as 0.9731 and it was determined that the predicted and actual values were compatible. Finally, optimization experiments were made and optimum experiment conditions were revised and determined as 83.38 °C of leaching temperature, 196.35 min of leaching time, 2.86 M of acid concentration, and 202.24 W of ultrasound power. Under the optimum conditions determined after optimization, the highest yield of iron removal was determined as 95.08%. Under the optimal parameters, the SiO2 content of the concentrates increased from 97.841 to 99.907% and the Fe2O3 content reduced from 0.225 to 0.011%.

The general term "coal mine burp" refers to the sudden and violent failure of in situ coal. Coal bumps occur in most countries where coal is worked by underground methods, and are related to both geological factors and mining tech¬niques. Although no single set of circumstances is solely responsible for causing coal bumps, it is generally agreed that at least one of five conditions is necessary in order for then to occur: 1,2,3,4 (1) the depth of cover exceeds 500-ft., (2) the overlying strata are relatively strong and stiff, (3) the coal is structurally strong, (4) the floor does not heave readily, and (5) the mining method produces high stresses over a large area of the seam. Except for the last, these conditions relate to geological factors that are impractical to control. Consequently, methods of controlling or minimizing the occurrence of coal bumps usually are concerned with mining techniques. Coal bumps have been successfully controlled by both longwall and 'yielding pillar' mining systems 4. The longwall system is particularly effective in controlling bumps, but does not eliminate them completely, especially in strong coal seams being worked at comparatively great depths, say in excess of 2000-ft.5. Under such conditions, auger drilling or water infusion often prove helpful 5,6. These techniques are used to destress or otherwise alter the mechanical properties of the coal in an attempt to shift the peak "abutment pressure" away from the immediate vicinity of the face. Under 'normal' conditions, however, it can be expected that the coal near the face will be crushed under the prevailing high stress conditions and that the peak abutment pressure will automatically be shifted into the solid coal. In this context, coal mine bumps can be characterized as unstable releases of energy associated with successive yielding of portions of the coal seam with progressive mining. Longwall and yielding pillar mining systems are effective in controlling coal bumps because they ordinarily do not allow the zone of peak abutment pressure to become 'surrounded' by destressed coal.

Shaft construction is assuming ever increasing importance when new mining enterprises are considered. The reasons for this increased emphasis is the much greater depths at which many new ore-bodies are being developed and the rapid depletion of near surface reserves requiring mines to go to greater depths on existing deposits. These greater depths increase the probability of exposure to unfavorable geologic conditions and it is more likely that high ground and/or water pressures will be experienced at these depths. The large capital costs involved and the critical position of a shaft in the overall mining program necessitate that this element of project development be given careful and critical consideration. The Henderson No. 2 Shaft is located in the Rocky Mountains of north central Colorado (See Figure I), about 55 miles west of Denver, near the community of Empire in Clear Creek County. At the 10, 442 foot collar elevation, winter arrives in late September and brings snow to contend with until May. The labor force for Shaft No. 2 is approximately 90 men. They are provided access to the project via all-weather U. S. Highway 40. SHAFT DESIGN The Henderson No. 2 Shaft is a 28-foot I. D. circular, concrete lined (1 foot thick) vertical shaft. Because of the tremendous technological advances achieved in recent years in microcomputers, it is not only technically feasible but also economically viable to develop an automatic truck dispatching system using a microcomputer. Such an effort was initiated by the Department of mining and Geological Engineering, University of Arizona in the summer of 1983. Up to date results and experiences prove that today's microcomputers can be economically employed for such a system to be used at small to medium scale open-pit mines. An IBM/XT microcomputer with 10 MB harddisk storage, together with automatic sensing capability of truck movements at several key locations in the pit, formed the core of this system. System software is written primarily in MICROSOFT FORTRAN with supporting subroutines in MACRO assembly language. The software is designed to automatically monitor truck movement throughout the pit, to make heuristic assignments based on expected shovel availability and truck travel times, and to record production statistics. It is currently dimensioned to handle 50 trucks, 10 shovels, 10 dump sites and 3 material types. Due to the lack of funds to purchase the necessary communications hardware, the work related to the automatic sensing of truck movements has not been performed to date. Otherwise, the automatic truck dispatching-system is fully operational on a realtime mode.

The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative-Metal Mining Sector (ADTI-MMS) has established a Pit Lake Committee to enhance the science and understanding for the long-term management of pit lakes. Participation in this new committee is from members of federal and state agencies, industry, and academia, including numerous individuals representing 10 states. Work has begun on a pit lake literature search and review, database, classification, and sampling and monitoring procedures document. Coordination with the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) has been established. Future work will include preparing a prediction and assumption verification document, a report identifying variables upon which water quality is dependent, and an applied remediation technologies document, including an evaluation of the effects of backfilling.

The abstract discusses the extraction of silica from nickel laterite ore using a hydrothermal process with sodium hydroxide. The effects of reaction temperature, time, and NaOH-to-ore ratio on silica extraction were investigated. The optimal conditions were determined, achieving over 98% silica extraction. The mechanism involves the reaction of Si in lizardite and quartz with sodium hydroxide, forming sodium silicate solution. Other metals like Mg, Fe, and Ni are enriched in the residue.

"The Lower and Middle River Des Peres (LMRDP) CSO Storage Tunnel is the largest single component of Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District’s (MSD) CSO control system improvements planned to meet consent decree requirements for MSD’s Lemay Service Area. The 13.7-km (8.5-mile) long, deep, hard rock tunnel will have a finished diameter of 9.1 m (30 ft). Beginning at the Lemay Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), the alignment follows the channelized River Des Peres to the outfall of the existing Forest Park tubes, as indicated in Fig. 1.The project includes three construction shafts, 34 intakes and a deep, cavern-style pump station located adjacent to the WWTP. The tunnel will be driven from the Defense Mapping shaft to the Macklind shaft. Another shaft is located near the midpoint at the tunnel in River Des Peres Park.The Forest Park intake, located at the upstream end of the tunnel just beyond the Macklind shaft, is a large, tangential vortex intake structure. With a peak flow rate of 170 m3/s (6,000 cfs), it will have a 6.1-m (20-ft) diameter dropshaft to transfer flow into the tunnel.The project includes another three large tangential vortex-flow intake structures with peak flow rates ranging from 28 to 44.5 m3/s (990 to 1,570 cfs). These large intakes are located at points where three large sewers (formerly creeks) enter the River Des Peres. Dropshaft diameters for these intakes range from 3 to 3.7 m (10 to 12 ft) in diameter. The 30 remaining intakes are smaller tangential vortex-style, with dropshafts in the range of 0.8 to 1.7 m (30 to 66 in.) in diameter.Each intake structure drops flow into a deaeration chamber constructed adjacent to the tunnel at tunnel depth. Intake tunnels transfer flow from the deaeration chambers to the main tunnel. Most of the intake tunnels are short. However, two are long. The Glaise Creek tunnel will extend 762 m (2,500 ft) from the main tunnel to the Alaska Park intake, while the Rock Creek tunnel will extend 823 m (2,700 ft) from the main tunnel to the Rock Creek intake. The dewatering pump station, located at the downstream end of the tunnel, will be built inside a large, horseshoe-shaped cavern with two access shafts. Excavation of the cavern and its access shafts will be performed by the tunnel contractor. Build-out of the dewatering pump station will be performed under separate contract."

Though sedimentary rocks comprise only about five percent of the volume of the continental crust, they cover about 80% of its surface, serve as important reservoirs for fluids, contain reserves of non-metallic minerals, and have in general been extensively drilled. However, most drilling has been shallow in comparison to the thickness of the crust and such deep drilling as has taken place is very strongly localized in sedimentary basins. This may be seen by reference to Figures 1 and 2 which show the location of wells that drilled deeper than 15,000' [=] 4.6 km. (Figure 1) and those that drilled below 20,000' [=] 6.15 km. (Figure 2). It is apparent that, even in regions of sedimentary cover, direct exploration below six kilometers has been very restricted. In the case of the metamorphic and igneous rocks which make up 95% of the volume of the crust, direct exploration has been much less extensive in terms of both area and depth. The present state of our knowledge of the crust below a' thin surface layer stands in marked contrast to our growing present need for raw materials and the needs of future generations. It also stands in contrast to our need for enhanced, scientific knowledge of the deeper crust, its configuration, its present state, its hydrothermal systems,-its evolution, and its materials. Lessons learned in exploring the third dimension of the sea floor, the vigorous prosecution of seismic profiling, the development of testable models for hydrothermal systems and mineral deposits, the need for better understanding of heat flow, state of stress, earthquake mechanisms, and a host of other phenomena all suggest that it is time to launch a national program for scientific exploration of the crust which uses drilling to test important hypotheses developed on the basis of indirect evidence.

Surface water quality is determined by complicated interactions between water and land. Runoff--the flow of waters in surface streams and rivers-¬represents the total amount of water collected in a drainage basin or watershed that appears at the outlet of the basin. As the water flows through the basin, it is in contact with land and can pick up impurities from the land. Thus, surface waters are not pure--they contain impurities, or "pollutants," in vary¬ing concentrations determined by the nature of the land which they drain. The composition of surface waters thus tends to represent a steady state equilibrium between interactions of water and land. However, when man utilizes the land in the drainage basin or watershed, the natural equilibrium between water in the runoff and the land is disturbed. Such disturbances usually effect adverse changes in surface water quality, as new equilibrium conditions between land and water are established. These adverse changes in surface water quality can be thought of as "nonpoint pollution." Esti¬mation of nonpoint pollutant loads thus ultimately reduces to determining the magnitude of the differences between water qualities before and after man's disturbance of land within a watershed. The important key in making such an estimation lies in the determination of water quality in the natural or "back¬ground" condition of the watershed. In subsequent discussion in this paper, tools for making an estimation of background water quality will be described.

The freezing and subsequent solidifying of unstable, weak (sands, silts and clays) and/or wet soil to form a desired-shape frozen barrier around a construction area are possibly the main features of the freezing method for shaft sinking. The barrier, along with strengthening the soil, provides a dry environment to ensure sustainable subsurface construction work before placing a permanent lining. The freezing method requires the installation of freezing pipes in boreholes around the construction area and the circulation of chilled salt water through these pipes and has long been a proven technique for dry shaft sinking through unstable and water-bearing seam around the world. As removing heat from the ground is the main feature of the method, an efficient thermal design of the freezing process is mandatory to ensure success of the shaft sinking operation. This applies to both the sustainability and economy of the intended structure. The design presented in this paper is aimed at figuring out the heat-removing ability and operating time of the refrigerative equipment using some simple formulae. The authors adopted a theoretical approach to determine the quantity of heat to be removed from the ground. The amount of energy for the equipment was found to be greater than that for freezing, which proved the validity of the design. The active freezing period was calculated to be 121 days. The authors followed the structural design of the freezing process they proposed in their previous work (Farazi and Quamruzzaman, 2013). Though the first coal seam in the coalfield was encountered at a depth of approximately 352 m in the subsurface, the target depth for cooling and freezing was decided to be 162 m. The formation demands extra care to nullify its risk of the temporary structure collapsing and water rushing in (Farazi et al., 2012). Discussion on the determination of refrigerative equipment parameters was excluded from the scope of this work.

The productivity in coal mines, measured in terns of the output per manshift depends largely on the efficiency and speed of men and materials transport between working faces and the surface. The mechanization of coal winning and material handling processes has led to a great rise in the mine productivity (1). Early applications of power in U. S. coal mines were mainly electrical. The excellent traction available with the DC motor and the ease of the distribution of the DC power have made trolley wire installations for haulage very popular. In shallow mines with very limited emissions of methane it did not constitute a major hazard but as mine depths increased and corresponding emissions of methane also increased fire and methane ignition hazards have become very serious. Conveyors have proved economic where intense mechanization of coal faces generates a large output of coal from a single face, but the fire and respirable dust hazard associated with them are no less serious. Recognizing these shortcomings, the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 laid down numerous provisions for the safe use of trolley-wire haulage and conveyors (2) which generally improve safety but in some cases complicate mining operations and have decreased productivity significantly since 1969. In course of time as coal mines become deeper and hence gassier and as the emphasis on safety increases it would be inconceivable to use trolley-wire haulage under ground as already witnessed in several other countries with deep coal mines. With rising capital investments and cost of the protection against fire and respirable dust, the use of conveyors may also have to be limited to special areas, e.g. main entries. Indeed, there are only two alternatives available, namely; (1) Degasify the coal seams prior to mining and use conventional electrical power, or (2) Develop alternate sources of power which would be safer and yet efficient and cheap.

This work integrated selective principal component analysis (SPCA) with a singularity fractal model to map hydrothermal alterations of argillic, phyllic, and propylitic in the north-west of Kerman city in Iran. SPCA results were provided for short wave infrared (SWIR) bands of the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) sensor tomap phyllic and propylitic alterations. Also, the bands 5–7 were applied to map the argillic alteration zone. SPCA results could present useful information for alteration mapping but it does not show the purest pixels of alteration. Therefore, a fractal model of singularity was applied to highlight the different alteration pixels in the Kerman Cenozoic magmatic arc (KCMA). Thus, the singularity index of different hydrothermal alteration zones was produced. Comparing the obtained results with the field data showed that Kader, Serenu,Meiduk, and Abdar deposits were acceptably identified by alteration mapping. Also, it seems that the singularity index could not discriminate the hydrothermal alterations of argillic and phyllic. The same spectral signature of kaolinite and muscovite minerals is the main reason for misclassifications.

The Purpose of the Paper It is fitting that the first paper of a session on the Financial Aspects of Mining should be on the basic data upon which any financial discussion of a mining project must be based. The history of a mining project starts with exploration in an area considered geologically favorable for mineralization and culminates in the discovery of a body of valuable mineral material commonly known as a mineral deposit. Subsequently more detailed exploration establishes the approximate size, shape, tonnage and average grade of the deposit by surface and/or underground drilling, -surface trenching and/or underground workings. Some preliminary metallurgical testing and other studies, as required, are made at this time. Development work is then carried out to provide representative samples for determining flowsheet and metallurgical balances, preparing the deposit for production and establishing more firmly the grade and mining characteristics of the deposit. A feasibility study is then made of the engineering aspects of the project including the estimation of operating coats, the capital required to place the deposit into production, profit and return on investment. The high speed conveyor type self unloading bulk carrier concept has been around for about 70 years. Although the design was developed, refined and steadily improved in the Great Lakes, to date limited numbers of such vessels have emerged in the bulk ocean trades, and these have tended to concentrate within specific mineral trades. For example, North American gypsum companies have embraced conveyor self unloaders to the point where such vessels almost exclusively carry the gypsum requirements of this part of the world. One major aluminum company has developed an impressive fleet capability in self unloaders. Application of other ships tends to be fragmented through several mineral trades. A few years ago a new phenomonen began to appear on the Great Lakes. Whereas it had historically been accepted in that region that self unloaders were effective vessels for the minor bulk trades including limestone, coal, salt, gravel and sand; they had seldom been employed heavily in the big volume iron ore trades. Suddenly, however, the new generation of 60,000 ton Lakers which emerged were all designed as high speed self unloaders. The new vessels intended to trade especially in ore, or alternatively especially in coal, have somewhat different internal features, but the important point is that all are self unloaders.

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)’s Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) recently developed a series of models using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study gas distribution around a continuous mining machine with various fan-powered flooded bed scrubber discharge configurations in an exhaust curtain working face. CFD models utilizing species transport model without reactions in FLUENT were constructed to evaluate the redirection of scrubber discharge toward the mining face rather than behind the return curtain. The study illustrates the gas distribution in the slab (second) cut. The following scenarios are considered in this study: 100 percent of the discharge redirected back toward the face on the off-curtain side; 100 percent of the discharge redirected back toward the face, but divided equally to both sides; and 15 percent of the discharge redirected toward the face on the off-curtain side, with 85 percent directed toward the return curtain. These models are compared against a model with a conventional scrubber discharge where air is directed away from the face into the return. The models were validated against experimental data, proving to accurately predict sulfur hexafluoride (SF6 ) gas levels at four gas monitoring locations. This study includes a predictive simulation examining a 45° scrubber angle compared with the 23° angle for the 100 percent redirected, equally divided case. This paper describes the validation of the CFD models based on experimental data of the gas distribution results.

A multiyear program involving online, in-vessel exposures at Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (BGMI) has provided information and experience about the materials and designs for brickwork linings in pressure oxidation autoclaves. A variety of brick and mortar products was evaluated. Properties before and after exposure were used to document the performance. Some benefits include the development of a new silicate mortar, a better understanding of brick requirements and increased autoclave operating time between maintenance shutdowns. BGMI operates six pressure oxidation autoclaves at its Eureka County, NV gold operation. These autoclave process 15.8 k/ld (17,500 stpd) of gold ore. Figure 1 is a flowsheet of the six autoclave circuits. The gold ore is refractory, in which the gold particles are mineralogically encapsulated on a micro- and submicroscopic level. The autoclaves are 4.4- m- (14-ft-) diam and 26 m (85 ft) long (tip-to-tip). Inside of each is a full brickwork (brick plus mortar) lining that divides the vessel into five compartments. Each compartment has a motor-driven agitator that keeps the slurry suspended and disperses the oxygen to enhance reaction. During autoclave operation, the conditions are steady state at 210° to 232° C (410° to 450° F) and 61 to 62 kPa (420-430 psi). As shown in Fig. 1, there are other accessory vessels (splash and flash towers) in the autoclave circuits that are also brickwork-lined. The linings used to date, other than small test sections, have all been acid-resistant fireclay bricks, bonded with alkali silicate mortar, PbO- based mortar and/or vinyl ester mortar, but mainly alkali silicate mortar.

Metalliferous sediments constitute an important component of the sedimentary veneer that overlies basaltic oceanic crust of the Nazca Plate and elsewhere. Although first collected more than one century ago near the East Pacific Rise during the Challenger Expedition and recognized for their anomalously high content of Fe and Mn, occurring as very fine-grained, yellow-orange, oxides, hydroxides, and oxyhydroxides, it was not until the more detailed studies of Bostrom and Peterson (1966) that their geologic significance and concentrations of other transition metals were fully appreciated. The Nazca Plate is a dynamic lithospheric unit bordered by the Peru-Chile trench and the East Pacific Rise to the east and west, and by the Galapagos Rift and the Chile Rise to the north and south (Fig. 1). Samples employed in this study were taken from piston core recovered from the Nazca Plate (Fig. 2), D. S. D. P. drill core from the northeast Pacific (Dymond and others, 1973), ferromanganese nodules from dredge-haul s at several locations, and from hydrothermal mineral deposits of the Andes. Our efforts have been largely sponsored by the National Science Foundation through its International Decade of Ocean Exploration Pro- gram. The metalliferous fraction of these sediments is widespread, but generally small. Sedimentation is dominated by biogenic silica in the equatorial latitudes, terrigenous debris adjacent to the South American Continent, and by biogenic carbonate elsewhere, except at depths below 3500 m in the central and northwest parts of the Nazca Plate near the East Pacific Rise. Contributions of these distinctive sediment types are shown by the distributions of Si02, A1203, and CaC03 given in Figure 3.
