It is undoubtedly true. In preparation for this presentation, 193 organizations were asked to describe their mining research efforts. 60% responded, The meaning of "research" was taken in several different ways. The continual efforts of progressive companies to improve themselves were reported as research. We will call this and any effort to solve specific and immediate problems "practical research". The continuing investigation of subjects of long range interest will be called "basic research".

"Despite the recognized influence of product fineness on line capacity and downstream process performance, few mineral concentrators today use particle size measurement of the final product in automatic control applications for particle size. ‘Near-line’ particle size instrumentation has existed for decades and is utilized in modern concentrators, but low availability and measurement frequency, due to problems with slurry sampling and transport systems, make these technologies unreliable for use in automatic control. An innovative technology for real-time particle size measurement on individual hydrocyclones, named CYCLONEtrac™ PST (particle size tracking), has been developed by CiDRA Minerals Processing, and proven in commercial installations, demonstrating near 100% availability with minimal maintenance requirements, thus overcoming the limitations of previous technologies. Potential stakeholders require convincing, reliable information regarding the economic value delivered by automatic grind control projects. In this paper we present a methodology for estimating such value with the CYCLONEtrac™ PST technology, and demonstrate unique opportunities to improve process stability and performance. Based on actual plant data accumulated over time, the evaluation approach assesses and highlights the significant potential process improvement that can be expected with the particle size tracking technology. As an extension of previous work, in this paper we present the key operating criteria for optimizing the production of valuable metals and increase mill throughput by identifying the optimal grind size. As this requires operating closer to the process boundaries, accurate real-time particle size measurements, such as those provided by the CYCLONEtrac™ PST system, become essential for achieving the maximum potential value from every operation. For further illustration, data from three different copper plants is compared.Introduction Owners and operators of mineral concentrators constantly search for the most economically attractive way to increase the output of valuable metal. A logical approach is to identify a key parameter that has the greatest impact on the performance of multiple stages of the process and then use a holistic analysis methodology to determine how this key parameter can be controlled to optimize the final output.Particle size is widely recognized as such a key parameter; however, very few concentrators today use real-time particle size measurements for automatic control of the final product size due, to a large extent, to the inherent limitations of existing technologies. ‘Near-line’ particle size measurement instrumentation, which has been used for decades, typically suffers from low availability because the fundamental measurement technologies were developed for other, less demanding industries and then adapted to the harsh environment of the typical mineral concentration process. An outline of the key differences among the available technologies used for particle size measurement in comminution circuits has been completed in previous work, and plant data has proven the benefits of measurements on individual cyclones – something that, until now, has not been possible (Cirulis, 2017)."

"In 2000-2009, Highland Valley Copper (HVC) tested new generation 660 mm cyclones supplied by various manufacturers in an aim to replace existing first generation 762 mm cyclones without success. Due to plant infrastructure limitations, new generation larger (838 and 800 mm) cyclones were not feasible. In 2010, an approach of testing hybrid 800 mm diameter cyclones was initiated by HVC. The hybrid cyclone consists of an 800 mm cyclone upper head section and the use of existing 762 mm cyclone conical sections. Three hybrid 800 mm cyclones were engineered and fabricated, targeting a throughput of 850-950 mtph and were installed in the E line cyclone cluster. Since starting operation on September 20, 2011, three hybrid 800 mm cyclones have been running at combined throughput ranges of 750 to 1050 mtph. Based on plant Daily Met Reports, the test hybrid cyclones demonstrated a decrease in misplacement of coarse copper bearing material to the cyclone overflow and better cyclone efficiency when compared to the existing 762 mm cyclones at the same throughput. The hybrid 800 mm cyclones also demonstrated significantly higher capacity per unit when compared to the existing cyclones. Based on the improvement demonstrated in the full plant trials, HVC decided to install the new hybrid 800 mm cyclones in all five grinding lines starting in July, 2012. A more detailed discussion of the full plant trials and initial results of the first complete retrofit of E line will be presented. INTRODUCTIONHighland Valley Copper Partnership (HVC) is Canada’s largest base metals mine and one of the world’s largest producers of Cu-in-concentrate. The mine, located in the central interior of British Columbia, is owned (97.5% interest) and operated by Teck Resources Ltd. In 2011, HVC produced about 210 million lbs. of Cu and 8 million lbs. of Mo. HVC’s Mill Modernization Project (MOP), which was budgeted for $475 M, is currently under intensive construction and is scheduled for commissioning in Q1 2014. The following description was valid at the time of writing this paper.The operation has been expanded a number of times since the startup of the original Lornex mill in 1972. The plant started up with two 9.75 m (32 foot) diameter primary SAG mills. It was expanded in 1981 with the addition of a 10.36 m (34 foot) diameter SAG mill. In 1988, the Highmont concentrator grinding mills and flotation section were moved and attached to the Lornex mill site. This added two10.36 m (34 foot) diameter AG primary mills to the Highland mill. This brought the total number of primary mills to five referred to as Line A, B, C, D and E: three SAG mills (A, B and C) each with two ball mills in parallel and two AG mills (D and E) each with one ball mill. Each AG mill line is equipped with one short head pebble crusher. Ball mill circuits are classified using 8 clusters of ten Linatex 762 mm cyclones to reach a target P80 330 micron (equivalent 43% +100 mesh), before the cyclone overflow product advances to the bulk flotation circuit."

The results of designing, constructing, and laboratory testing of a modular, distributed, microprocessor-based mine monitoring and control system are presented. A standard computer communications protocol (DDCMP) was utilized throughout the system. Tests were performed on the utilization of a high-level language for programming mine monitoring and control systems. Laboratory tests were run on a combined air velocity/methane sensor.

This paper analyzes the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of methane-air mixtures in the mined-out gobs of underground longwall coal mines. Although direct examinations of the gob atmosphere are difficult due to the inaccessibility of these gobs, evidence from methane drainage practices and investigations of numerous mine explosions suggests that explosive methane zones can form within longwall gobs. Explosions and fires resulting from these methane accumulations have led to severe and fatal injuries to the miners. Most recently, this was demonstrated in the explosion of the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia, where 29 miners lost their lives.The paper also reviews current research on numerical modeling of gas flows in longwall gobs and outlines how targeted injection of nitrogen into gobs can effectively reduce the volume of such explosive methane zones. The paper concludes that comprehensive monitoring of gas compositions, along the accessible fringes of the gobs along with inertization, improved ventilation schemes and further research are necessary to control this explosion hazard and make mining operations safe.

This study presents the results of the mineralogical characterization of Ti-Zr ore from the Jiboia deposit, located in the municipality of Brejo Grande, Sergipe State, Brazil. The goal is to identify the main Ti, Zr, and REE carrier phases in the different particle size fractions in order to subsidize the development of a cost-effective processing route for the production of heavy minerals concentrate. The mineral resources are estimated at 31.5Mt @ 3.5% of total heavy minerals (THM) for the Jiboia Ti-Zr deposit, of which 5 Mt @ 3.39% THM were classified as measured and indicated. The mineralogy of the heavy mineral concentrate recalculated to 100% is represented by 22% pseudorutile, 20% ilmenite, 15% zircon, 5% rutile, 2% monazite, and 36% gangue. The ore minerals are preferably concentrated in the 150 × 53-μm granulometric fractions, which represents 80% of the THM and only 27% of the ROM (Run-of-Mine) ore. Therefore, by cutting the ore to 150 μm, it is possible to discard 73% of the ROM mass and recover 80% of the THM, including 100% of the zircon and monazite which are the most valuable minerals present in the heavy mineral concentrate. The global recovery of THM starts to decline rapidly in the fractions finer than 106 μm and the mass disposal (tailing) does not follow in the same proportion. Higher zircon contents in the concentrates of the fractions finer than 150 μm imply a significantly lower recovery of heavy minerals like ilmenite, pseudorutile, and rutile that make the fractions coarser than 150 μm.

This report presents recommended guidelines and regulatory changes applicable to electrical installations in underground oil shale mines. These recommendations are based on information gathered from oil shale operators, government agencies, and other knowledgeable sources familiar with existing plans for mining systems and electrical installations, and on present understanding of the problems and hazards associated with oil shale mining. Additional discussions of specific electrical problems related to oil shale mining are also presented. These specific problems include: ? Ground fault current levels ? Permissible electric wheel motors ? Permissible batteries and electric starting systems ? Intrinsically safe instrumentation and applicability of existing test standards.

The coalmining industry in most countries has, at various times, suddenly been confronted with a decrease in demand for coal. Readjustments made to reduce productive capacity to match the reduced demand for coal have often resulted in hardship to mineworkers, loss of capital investment to mineowners and loss of coal reserves. The consequences of the methods of readjustment adopted in the past have contributed to the low esteem in which coalmining has come to be regarded by a large section of the gel).eral public in many countries.Four sections of the coalmining industry, representing different periods of time, different countries, and different methods of industrial organisation have been examined:Great Britain and the U.S.A. during the inter war years, the post war European Coal and Steel Community, and post war Great Britain under the National Coal Board. An assessment has been made of the methods adopted in each case to reduce productive capacity to match a reduced demand for coal. Finally the fundamentals of the problem-as it affects the coalmining industry of any country-are considered, and possible solutions put forward.During the 1950's, surplus productive capacity was a problem in many coalmining countries, including Australia and New Zealand. As a rule no techniques are developed beforehand to solve problems introduced by a sudden decrease in demand for coal. The situation is usually tackled by a series of short term decisions based on expediency, which often in the long run only aggravate the problem.

"On average, one out of two glass bottles coming on to the market is provided by recycling processes in Europe. Glass recycling has been started by the early of 1970s in Turkey, and the recycling amount has been reached to 70 thousand tons recently, while 4.2 million tons which represents only 25 percent of total glass manufactured, is the amount of glass collected annually for recycling in the world. The glass recycle process basically involves collecting, sorting, then crushing and grinding after which glass cullet is produced as the secondary raw material. Removing of the contaminants from the glass cullet, and then melting are the next steps. In this study, recent developments of 100% recyclable without any deterioration in quality, and never decomposable glass, are discussed detailed in terms of glass production processes.1.IntroductionIn many countries, waste glass constitutes a large proportion of solid wastes, and recycling the glass is a major environmental problem all over the world [1]. Among the diverse types of waste, glass is one of the most valuable recycling materials because it can be revived and recycled completely and hardly decomposes [2]. Between 80% and 85% of the mass output from the worldwide glass industry is either in the form of containers for the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries, or flat glass for building construction or for motor vehicle manufacture. Other product segments, whilst only constituting about 15% of the mass output, produce high value technical and consumer products by comparison with container and flat glass [3].In the present study, the recycling of Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT) and Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) were examined. The production of glasses and glass-ceramics from glass cullet, synthesis of different compounds from recycled glass were other subjects of interest. The use of recycled glass for construction industry and using glass as aggregate were emphasized. Finally the recovery of glass fibers were investigated."

The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia Inc (CME) is the peak resources sector representative body in Western Australia. The paper gives a summary of the role and objectives of the CME, including its history, structure and key program areas. Particular attention is given to the role of the CME in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. The paper details the types of CME membership that are currently in existence. The paper argues that a strong and vibrant CME is vital to secure the resources sectorÆs growth and development in future years.

A FEW copper-zinc-base alloys meet die-casting requirements reason- ably well, although improvements are desired. Aluminum bronzes, high-tinbronzes and some copper-nickel-zinc alloys can be die-cast, accordingto Herb,1 but seldom are because of such factors as higher melting ranges and greater cost than certain of the brasses. Fox2 has summarized the copper-base die-casting alloys that were in commercial use in 1937 and has given the effects of different alloying constituents. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been concerned for many years with the general problems of underground coal mining and the particular problems due to the methane content of the coal. The Bureau and others have worked diligently to improve the health and safety conditions for underground coal miners. It has been recognized for many years that the methane in coal would have some value if it could he recovered and used, Also its removal before coal mining began or during the mining cycle itself would make mining safer and more economic due to a potential saving in ventilation costs. The work covered in this report was carried out to review methods of removing methane from active and inactive regions of operating coal mines and to determine how the methane could be concentrated and utilized economically.

In the last several decades, techniques of data collection have been rapidly evolving. Automated spectroscopic techniques in the chemical analysis of rocks for example have advanced to the point that we can analyze samples faster than we can grind them. Remote sensors of LANDSAT give us intensity measurements in four color bands of every acre of the U.S. every 19 days. Common depth point seismic instrumentation systems used at sea for surveying and networks of seismometers arrayed around the country for earthquake studies likewise are generating vast amounts of data. These along with many other earth science data generating systems have caused a veritable data explosion. How do we deal with these enormous amounts of geologic data presently being produced as well as those produced in the past, and to be produced in the future? There is an immediate need to acquire and utilize past and present basic data in order to address today's national earth science problems. Also data being collected and stored now must be compatible with future data in order for us to be able to undertake the wide spectrum of analysis that must be made in the future. This is a big order! In order to organize and to be able to analyze these data, the USGS has embarked on a wide ranging program of compatible data base construction and the development of computer technology, based on interactive computing, to facilitate resource assessments and analyses. These activities are analogous to two sides of a coin. One side deals with the logic, philosophy, and mechanics of information storage and retrieval; and the other side deals with the sensible application of computer technology to the treatment of data. Lacustrine sediments, hydrothermal explosion breccias and spring precipitates deposited 5200 - 1800 years BP as a result of geothermal activity at Lake Rotokaua, contain New Zealand's largest known sulphur reserves. Current drill indicated reserves are 2 600 000 tonnes of elemental sulphur, assuming a ten per cent (dry basis) cut-off, contained in some 17 000 000 tonnes of ore with an average grade of 214.0 per cent (dry basis) sulphur. Additional inferred ore containing 500 000 - 900 000 tonnes of sulphur has yet to be prospected by drilling. Geological factors will be important in exploitation of the deposit, particularly the extent and disposition of the orebody, sulphur grades and distribution, physical characteristics of the ore, permeability and stability of the overburden and the nature and extent of geothermal activity in the area. Trials to date indicate that Frasch mining and possibly opencutting are unlikely to be successful mining methods. Further mining feasibility studies will be required to ascertain the most likely mining system for the deposit.

These seminars were held in December 1981, and covered topics relating to ergonomics and mining in the areas of the man-machine interface, and design of the work environment. This Bureau of Mines study is a listing of fuels -related projects that are presently under construction, planned, or proposed by various companies and organizations in the Western United States. The future facilities covered in this report fall into the following categories: coal mines and expansions to existing mines, electric powerplants and expansions to existing plants, coal conversion plants, waste-to-fuel conversion plants, oil shale projects, tar sands projects, potential geothermal facilities, coal slurry pipelines, railroads related to fuels development, uranium mines and expansions to existing mines, uranium mills and enrichment facilities, oil refineries, and natural gas processing plants. The projects are listed by state. Data concerning the company, location, planned markets, process type, initial operating date, capacity, water requirements, employment, current status, and other relevant information are included. Each project has been plotted on an accompanying state map. Due to present uncertainties concerning the fuels industry, some of the listed projects may never he constructed. No attempt has been made to determine the degree of certainty or viability of each project.

Modern electrolysis technologies can provide possibilities for developing sustainable processes in terms of energy and environment. Laboratory experiments were carried out to study electrodeposition of iron from molten salts and aqueous solutions using an inert oxygen evolving anode to eliminate the emissions of CO2. The possibilities of molten salt electrorefining of metallurgical grade silicon to produce solar grade silicon were also investigated. Electrochemical techniques were used to study the electrochemical behaviour of dissolved iron, silicon, and titanium species. Bulk electrolysis was carried out to deposit pure iron, silicon, and titanium. The quality of the deposits was studied by SEM/EDS and XRD analyses. Underground coal mining has been active within the East Mountain property since the mid 1950's. As a result, coal from two seams has been extracted within large areas allowing surface subsidence to occur. Monitoring of subsidence annually, began in 1981 using on the ground conventional monumentation, surveying and photogrammetric monitoring. The data collected has shown the time benefits of photogrammetry and the relationship between observed subsidence and the geometry of the mined out area below.

This study by the Bureau of Mines documents the leadtime required for preliminary and detailed exploration, development of the mine, and construction of beneficiation and support facilities for selected copper deposits in Arizona. The time for major exploration ranged from 1 to 15 years, time for open pit development (or construction) was 1 to 4 years, and time for under- ground development was 4 to 8 years; one underground mine presently being developed may require 12 years to achieve production. Construction of the beneficiation plants required 8 months to just over 2 years. The data are supported by historical facts for each deposit during the leadtime stages from location of claims through exploration, construction, expansion, and leaching. The sequence of development and factors contributing to differences in the time spans are discussed. Histories are detailed for the Miami, Castle Dome, Copper Cities, San Manuel-Kalamazoo, and Twin Buttes properties; briefly summarized are the Pinto Valley, Miami East, Esperanza-Sierrita, Pima, and Mineral Park Properties. Each mining operation had its own pattern of development, and together they present a source of planning information for the development of other properties.
