O complexo Minas-Rio da Anglo American iniciou suas operações em agosto de 2014. A usina de filtragem produziu, em 2016, cerca de 15 milhões de toneladas secas de concentrado. O minério, explorado no município de Conceição do Mato Dentro (MG), passa pelas etapas de cominuição, classificação, concentração e separação sólido-líquido antes de ser bombeado por 529 km até o município de São João da Barra (RJ), onde é filtrado, estocado e embarcado para exportação. Quatorze filtros cerâmicos, com 144 m² de área de filtragem cada um, são responsáveis pelo último processo de produção do pellet feed. O início de operação foi marcado por um desempenho muito aquém do planejado. Diversos tipos de avaliações, como análises em microscópio ótico e contagem de bactéria, foram conduzidas e mostraram que o entupimento precoce dos poros do meio filtrante era o responsável pelo problema. Foram identificados 4 principais responsáveis pelo entupimento: material orgânico, sulfato de bário, partículas de concentrado de minério de ferro e óleo. Amostras de placas cerâmicas foram testadas em laboratório com diferentes reagentes para a limpeza dos poros entupidos. Análises químicas na solução resultante dessa lixiviação e/ou análise em microscópio dos corpos de prova indicavam a eficiência do reagente testado. Os mais promissores foram testados industrialmente. Por fim, o estabelecimento de uma nova rotina de limpeza das placas gerou uma melhora significava do desempenho da filtragem.

"The grinding circuit of the Heath Steele concentrator was sampled under five different sets of operating conditions. The balanced results of the sampling campaigns were used to calibrate steady-state rod mill, ball mill and cyclone models using a commercial simulation software package (JKSimMet® ). Thirteen process variables had the potential to affect significantly the performance of the grinding circuit. Statistical-Design-of- Experiments techniques were applied to plan the suite of simulations in order to improve the quality of and minimize the time to find the optimal solution. The effect of each factor on three performance indices (the cyclone overflow size distribution, the circulating load and the cyclone underflow density) was modeled with empirical polynomial relationships using another software package (Design-Expert@)T. he conditions under which the cyclone overflow size distribution was maximized while respecting circulating load and cyclone density constraints were identified using these relationships. Among the most interesting results is the prediction of a set of conditions where the circuit target size distribution is achieved with only three ball mills instead of four.IntroductionProduction at the Heath Steele concentrator (near Miramichi, New Brunswick) started some 43 years ago at a rate of 750 t/d. The plant capacity was increased to 4000 t/d through successive expansion phases in the seventies (Sapiro, 1977; Johnston, 1978). However, as a result of depleting ore reserves, the plant throughput had to be gradually reduced to the current production rate of 2700 t/d. Heath Steele Mines currently have proven and probable reserves which would see it producing until the end of 1999 (Noranda Inc., 1997).An analysis of the grinding circuit of the Heath Steele concentrator was recently commissioned to identify opportunities for reducing operating costs while maintaining budgeted mill throughput and metallurgical performance. Since the plant will likely be operated below nominal capacity for the rest of its lifetime, the possibility of improving grinding efficiency by operating with fewer ball mills and/or crushers was contemplated."

Variations in product distribution in the carbon-sulphur dioxide system due to variations in reaction temperature, sulphur dioxide concentration in the feed gas, and gassolid contact time were studied in detail for a brown coal char. The results were compared with those for two wood chars, a coke prepared from Liddell coal and two cokes prepared from Ac1and coal. Conditions were chosen such that gas-solid diffusion rates did not hinder chemical attack of the carbon.With brown coal char under suitable conditions, the selectivity of sulphur in the sulphur dioxide fed, to either elemental sulphur or carbon disulphide, was in excess of 90 per cent. The wood chars gave very similar product distributions Ito brown coal char. However, the cokes from Ac1and and Liddell coals were respectively approximately three and seven times less reactive than the brown coal char.The approximate carbon holdup required to just achieve total conversion of sulphur dioxide, and thereby achieve high selectivity to elemental sulphur, is given as a function of reaction temperature.

The high resolution resistivity method (HRRM) is developed specifically for detecting underground cavities and tunnels. HRRM has a special feature in that it can recognize and cancel static shift, which makes it different &om the high density resistivity method (HDRM). In searching for various means for detecting underground cavities, we found that the detecting depth of the transient electromagnetic field method (EM) depends mainly on the measurement duration, not the loop area. In addition, TEM can also be used to locate the high-resistivity bodies. In order to use them for local working site conditions, we combine HRRM with TEM to become a combined electromagnetic method. Since the late 1980's this method has been used to locate abandoned mines and air passages and burning centers of mine fires with great success. This paper cites case studies for which this technique was successfully used.

Flotation of dolomite from apatite was investigated, using dodecylamine hydrochloride or sodium oleate as the collector, in the absence and presence of inorganic modifiers such as sodium chloride. Separation of dolomite from apatite was anticipated from the single mineral experiments under various pH and collector concentration conditions. Flotation selectivity in the mixtures, however, was found to be limited. Attempts to control the flotation response of these minerals by addition of salts such as NaCI and KCI indicated that selectivity is possible. The presence of sodium chloride was determined to depress apatite flotation using sodium oleate leaving dolomite flotation unaffected (Moudgil and Ince, 1989). In this paper, conditions for optimum separation and the effect of major parameters on the desired selectivity are discussed.

Concentrations of bright green material in the "Golden Mile" of Kalgoorlie, which carry particularly high gold values, are known locally as "green leader".This assemblage consists largely of quartz, sericitic muscovite, carbonates, and pyrite. Some of the sericitic muscovite contains vanadium, giving the rock its green colour. Vanadium oxides, including nolanite, are also present. Tellurides identified in this study are calaverite, altaite, petzite, melonite, and coloradoite. Native gold was found in most of the samples; some of the gold, at least, has been formed from the decomposition of gold tellurides.It is suggested that mineralizing solutions carrying gold and tellurium leached vanadium from the host rocks and subsequently deposited gold tellurides and vanadium-bearing minerals in the "green leader".

The philosophy and detail of mill design in developing countries, where it is frequently difficult to obtain experienced, qualified supervision to operate the plant, are discussed. The resulting design suggests the desirability of simple units, with maximum visibility of equipment operation and material movement, which allow the minimal technical supervision to see the plant conditions prevailing. Information on plant conditions during periods of lesser supervision can be provided by the use of simple, low-maintenance recorders. Where the mill is intended for operation in a developing country, it is insufficient for the flowsheets and plant layouts merely to be drawn: the process metallurgist must pay meticulous attention to details that could ordinarily be left to the design detailing group. The design of this type of mill requires a knowledge of human engineering—of the type of individual who will operate and supervise the plant; probable changes in personnel should be taken into account. Details are suggested for coarse-ore handling, screens, feeders, secondary and tertiary crushers, conveyors, dust collecting, fine-ore feeding, grinding mills, conditioners, flotation, thickeners, filters, reagent systems, sand pumping, sampling, instrumentation, safety and construction

"Abstract The Deep Mixing Methods (DMM), in their current forms, have been employed in the United States since 1986, although an earlier version had seen service from 1954. The earlier developments were strongly influenced by practices in the Nordic countries and Japan, while by the late 1980’s several DMM systems had been developed in the U.S. itself. Since then, DMM has continued its evolution, principally via the challenges of a series of large, landmark projects, but also via distinct, significant technological advances. This paper highlights the key points in the history of DMM in the U.S., and provides an overview of the different methods currently in use.In the BeginningIt is a common misconception that the history of applications of the Deep Mixing Methods (DMM) in the United States dates from 1986 when SMW Seiko Inc. — a subsidiary of Japan’s Seiko Kogyo Company — was established in the Bay Area. However, the author believes that Intrusion Prepakt Co.’s patented MIP (Mixed in Place) system had been used, albeit sporadically (about 30 projects are recorded), since 1954 (FHWA 2000, 2001). Ironically, by 1961 this single auger method had been extensively used under license in Japan for excavation support and groundwater control — by the Seiko Kogyo Company. By 1972, the original MIP technique had been succeeded by more advanced Japanese methods, involving multiple augers. Intrusion Prepakt have long since become defunct.The first systematic studies of contemporary Deep Mixing Methods in Japan began in 1967 when the Port and Harbor Research Institute of the Ministry of Transportation began laboratory testing using granular and powdered lime for treating soft marine soils. Fundamental studies continued through the early 1970’s, by which time the development of industrial scale equipment was well advanced, having its first application on a marine trial near Haneda Airport. Coincidentally, laboratory and field research also began in 1967 in Sweden (“Swedish Lime Column Method”) for treating soft clays using unslaked lime. Reportedly the progenitor was a Norwegian, Kjeld Paus, who had made observations on fluid lime columns in the U.S. It would seem that developments in Japan and the Nordic countries proceeded independently until 1975 when the technology leaders from each group (Broms and Boman; and Okumura and Terashi, respectively) presented their — very similar — findings at a conference in Bangalore, India. Limited technical exchanges ensued thereafter.Whereas the Nordic developments continued to focus on the use of dry reagents (cement and lime) and relatively light equipment compatible with operating on and in very soft clays and organics, the Japanese progressed into the use of fluid reagents (cement-based grouts) and heavier equipment for both marine and land-based projects. Thus, by 1986, there were a large number of proprietary (wet and dry) DMM systems in Japan, and a rapidly growing market already by then accounting for over 12,000,000 m3 of ground treatment."

Comparing Energy Efficiency of Multi-Pass High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) Circuits With increased emphasis on reducing costs and carbon emissions in mineral processing, it is becoming essential to employ the most efficient comminution devices and to use them to maximum effect. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) are considered highly efficient compared with other devices, however their relative efficiency in multi-HPGR circuits is less well understood. A series of comminution tests was carried out to evaluate three multi-pass HPGR circuits and a jaw crusher-ball mill circuit. Combinations of HPGR units (1.0 m and 0.25 m diameter), jaw crushers and Bond ball mills were used to grind a 32 mm top size porphyry copper feed (BBWI = 12.1) to a product P80 size of about 150 ¦m. Up to three passes of HPGR were used in each circuit, with energy measurement and size analysis at each point in the comminution process. The energy efficiencies of individual comminution stages and of the overall circuits were quantified and evaluated using three different approaches. The operating work index method for comparing comminution energy efficiency underestimated HPGR performance due to the large amount of fines generated. The -75 ¦m efficiency factor and F50/P50 reduction ratio interpolation methods both give a fairer measure because they better take into account the amount of fines generated by HPGR. The results show that the relative comminution efficiencies of the three multi-pass HPGR circuits tested differ by as much as 22%, providing insights as how to best employ HPGR in a comminution circuit. The most energy efficient of the circuits tested was a three-pass HPGR circuit with a 1.0 m diameter roll on the first pass in closed circuit with an 8 mm screen followed by a second and third pass in a 0.25 m roll.

Uplift of the antiformal ranges in Central Otago, New Zealand , has resulted in the progressive evolution of eluvial placer deposits in tectonic sediments on the range flanks and along their margins. The placers are derived from the reworking of fine-grained gold from the auriferous Manuherikia Group fluvial sediments which covered the basement prior to uplift of the ranges. Gold in the tectonic sediments at Matakanui shows a progressive increase in grainsize in successively younger sediments and nuggets in the youngest gravel sequence are up to two orders of magnitude larger than gold grains in the parent alluvial source. Most of the gold in the tectonic sediments is highly irregular in shape, commonly with delicate surface textures which could not have survived fluvial transport and are indicative of authigenic precipitation. Some coarse grains have been rounded by recycling, and further addition of authigenic gold has occurred. Placer gold values result from both physical and chemical enrichment during sedimentary recycling. Continued range uplift and back-thrusting of sediments on to the ranges results in recycling of earlier formed placer sediments. They also result in further enrichment of gold values through the incorporation of additional supplies of the parent alluvial source sediment The host sediments are widespread along the ranges and are not confined to sites of historic mining activity.

Objective: Workers with hearing loss face special problems, especially when working in noise. How­ever, conventional hearing conservation practices do not distinguish between workers with normal hearing versus impaired hearing. This study col­lected information from workers with self-reported noise exposure and hearing loss, supervisors of such workers, and hearing conservation program managers through focus groups and in-depth inter­views to evaluate their perspectives on the impact of hearing loss on safety and job performance, the use of hearing protection, and information needed to appropriately manage hearing-impaired workers who work in noisy environments. Results: Concerns about working in noise with a hearing loss could be grouped into the following 10 categories: impact on job performance, impact on job safety, impaired ability to hear warning signals, impaired ability to monitor equipment, interfer­ence with communication, stress and/or fatigue, impaired communication caused by hearing protec­tor use, reduced ability to monitor the environment as the result of hearing protector use, concerns about future quality of life, and concerns about future employability. Mostly, there was an agree­ment between the perceptions of workers, supervi­sors, and hearing conservation program managers regarding difficulties associated with hearing loss and consequent needs. These findings suggest that noise-exposed workers with hearing loss face many of the same problems reported in the literature by noise-exposed workers with normal hearing, with additional concerns primarily about job safety as the result of a reduced ability to hear environmental sounds, warning signals, and so forth. Conclusions: The study outlines potential chal­lenges regarding job safety and hearing conserva­tion practices for noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers. Awareness of these issues is a necessary first step toward providing appropriate protective measures for noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers. Of the 19 million adults in the United States with some degree of hearing trouble, nearly half are currently employed in the workforce (NCHS, 1994). More than 30 million US workers are exposed to hazardous noise levels, and noise-induced hearing loss is the most common occupational disease in the United States (NIOSH, 1996). Many workers incur their hearing losses during the first 5 to 10 yrs of employment (Rosler, 1994; Ward et al., 2000) and subsequently work the rest of their careers in an environment where noise and hearing loss interact to impair their ability to hear communication and other important signals. Workers with hearing loss who are exposed to hazardous noise levels present a dilemma to hearing loss preventionists. On the one hand, it is of great importance to ensure that their residual hearing is protected from the damaging effects of the noise to which they are exposed. On the other hand, how­ever, traditional hearing protectors serve to further “deafen” such workers, making communication more difficult and impairing the detection of environmen­tal sounds and warning signals. These workers have special needs that must be addressed. However, conventional hearing conservation practices do not distinguish between workers with normal versus impaired hearing; and, to date, no governmental or professional organization has developed specific guidelines or policies concerning the accommodation of noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers. Some research regarding noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers has been completed. These studies have primarily focused on three areas: (a) speech intelligibility in noise versus quiet, with and without various types of hearing protection devices (Abel et al., 1982; Abel et al., 1993; Abel & Spencer, 1997; Rink, 1979; Suter, 1989); (b) signal detection and localization under similar conditions (Abel et al., 1993; Abel et al., 1985; Abel & Hay, 1996); and (c) the use of hearing aids as hearing protectors (Berger, 1986; Dolan & Maurer, 1996; Hétu et al., 1992; Hétu et al., 1993). Research in these three areas has provided an initial framework for development of a management para­digm for these workers. The Galore Creek Mine project is one of the newest major mining projects under development in Canada. The project is located in a very remote area of northwestern British Columbia and is being developed by NovaGold Resources and Teck-Cominco of Vancouver. The mine project comprises one of the largest and highest grade undeveloped porphyry-related gold-silver-copper deposits in North America. In order to access the mine site a new 120 km road is required including a 4.4 km mine access road tunnel. Glaciers with heavy snow pack cover approximately two-thirds of the tunnel alignment with a maximum cover of 1200 m. The size of the access road tunnel is about 50 m2 and has been designed as a large single lane road tunnel to accommodate the transport of large size mining equipment for mine start up and ongoing operations. The rock conditions along the tunnel alignment comprise very strong volcanic rocks. Key services for mining operations will be incorporated into the tunnel comprising diesel and power as well as the concentrate pipe-line. Structural portal canopies and portal houses have been incorporated into the tunnel design due to the risk of rockfalls and avalanches in the portal areas. The mine access road tunnel is a significant and critical-path component to the overall project to provide vehicular access to allow construction of the mine site. In order to meet the expected mine start up date the construction of the tunnel works have commenced prior to any other works at the mine site and will be constructed entirely by helicopter support. The tunnel works commenced in the summer of 2006 with the advanced excavation of the overburden materials at the portals. Tunnel construction from the North portal commenced in the spring of 2007. When completed, the mine access tunnel will be the longest private road tunnel in North America. The key design and constructability issues for the mine access road tunnel project are presented and discussed along with a construction status update as of late 2007.

This is the third report published by the Bureau of Mines concerning the washability of Black Creek coal. Both of the former reports.5/6/ dealt with the Black Creek coal at the Bradford mine, Dixiana, Ala., near the northeastern extremity of the Warrior field, whereas the present report is based on float-and-sink tests of coal from what is presumably the Black Creek bed near the southern extremity of the field. Although the Yolande Coal & Coke Co., owners of the property at Yolande No. 6 slope, consider this opening to be on the Black Creek bed, the authors do not feel that there is as yet positive proof that this correlation is correct. There has been little or no development of the Black Creek bed in the Yolande Basin in the past, and a positive identification of the bed at Yolande No. 6 will have to await further exploration and development. The Yolande No. 6 is an exploration slope 3/4 mile north of Rockcastle, Ala. The slope is approximately 400 feet from top to bottom on a dip of 180. As far as the authors can ascertain, coal has never been produced commercially from the Black Creek bed in the southwestern part of the Warrior field. Exploration work in the past has indicated that the Black Creek coal in this area is extremely friable and high in sulfur. Extreme friability would naturally discourage its use as a domestic and railroad fuel, and high sulfur content would be a disasvantage in its use for coking coal. The present study of this coal has been made with particular reference to sulfur elimination on the assumption that it would make a good coking coal provided enough of the sulfur could be eliminated by washing.

Bowie Resources maintains one of the most pro-active ground control programs in the U.S. mining industry today. Its guiding philosophy is that everyone in the organization, from the miners at the face all the way through the top management, are involved in ground control. Some of the unique elements of the Bowie ground control program include: ? Roof bolt operators log the stratigraphy of test holes in nearly every cut. These ?lithgraphs? are used by section foremen to determine the need for additional roof support, and they are entered into the geologic data base for use in geologic modeling and mapping. ? Underground core drilling is conducted to obtain data for CMRR and stability maps. ? Weekly ?Quality? meetings, involving mine management and technical staff, are held to ensure that ground control information is integrated into production operations. The paper will describe the program in detail, discussing the involvement of roof bolters, section foremen, surveyors, technical staff, and production managers. It will also show how the program has contributed to the mine planning process. Case histories of successful ground control interventions will be discussed.

Ground and air vibrations induced by large surface blasts have been monitored. These field results, as well as a large number of published results, have been used to assess the performance of existing predictors and for the development of improved prediction methods. Field monitoring has been performed, with four seismographs giving complete wave records, at limestone quarries, coal strip mines and an open pit copper mine. Conventional analysis includes least square fitting of peak particle velocities and peak air overpressures with scaled distance formulations. Frequency content has been analyzed, and correlated with blast design (detonation sequence). Two new methods have been developed for predicting ground vibrations induced by blasting. The proposed analytical predictor accounts explicitly for inelastic attenuation and geometrical spreading, and calculates the peak particle velocity as a function of charge weight and distance. Statistical analysis of case studies confirms the consistent improvement over conventional scaled distance predictors. The second new predictor is a computer program simulating blasts, including blast geometry, charge distribution and detonation sequence, and simulating propagation of individual pulses to any point of interest, where effects are summed. A complete blast vibration results, allowing prediction of frequency content and duration as well as peak velocities.

The development and operation of "combination wells"5/ have created new and unusual problems, many of which can he solved only if information is available concerning the properties of the fluids produced. Data as to the characteristics of the fluids at the relatively high pressures that exist in the reservoirs are especially important, and there is growing economic concern to know what part, if any, of the liquid recovered at the surface was liquid in the reservoir, As an extension of this problem, it is important to know, whether liquid will be formed in the reservoir as a result of isothermal retrograde condensation when the reservoir pressure is reduced. The pressure range of such condensation, if it occurs, is significant in the design of gas-recycling plants for maintaining reservoir pressures. In connection with the operation of such plants, it is particularly important to know how pressure and temperature will affect the yield of the liquid phase and the composition of the gas to be returned to the reservoir. It has not been possible to predict the behavior of these fluids that have high ratios off gas to liquid by comparing them with the behavior of low gas-liquid ratio fluids at identical pressures and temperatures. Such comparison fails because the proportions in which a component will be distributed between the phases of a system at any given temperature and pressure depend increasingly on the composition of the mixture as the critical temperature and. pressure of the system are approached. Because many combination wells are producing from reservoirs that have temperatures near the critical point, experimental date on the properties of the Fluids under reservoir conditions are particularly important at this time, To meet the immediate requirements of the industry for such experimental information, an equilibrium cell has been constructed at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Bartlesville, Okla. When adequate experimental date have been accumulated, it may be possible to make dependable estimates of the phase relations for high gas-liquid ratio fluids at the pressures anti temperatures characteristic of "combination-well? reservoirs.
