Recent developments in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) once-through supercritical technology (OTSC) have enabled this technology to be offered as a utility-scale alternative competing head-to-head with pulverized fuel (PF) OTSC offerings. One clear example is the CFB supercritical unit at the Lagisza Power Plant in Poland, owned by PoludniowyKoncernEnergetyczny SA (PKE). This unit has now been in commercial operation for three full years, exhibiting very good performance, and has validated Foster Wheeler?s performance model at this utility scale as well as for units in the 600 MWe and 800 MWe size ranges offering net efficiency of ~43 per cent (LHV basis). This operating unit has also proven the use of the world?s first FW/BENSON? vertical-tube OTSC low mass flux technology. Since the Lagisza original international tender specified OTSC PF technology, it is important to note that the alternative selection of CFB OTSC technology over conventional PF technology is of historic significance, not only for the validation of the CFB supercritical platform as a viable alternative to conventional PF technology, but it also positions the CFB OTSC with fuel flexibility for offering of sizes up to and including 800 MWe units. This paper explores the differences between CFB OTSC technology and standard PF OTSC in utility power generation. Selection criteria, fuel burning range in both technologies, and other selection drivers are discussed. Economic analysis of both technologies, based on existing cases, is also provided. Also discussed are the technical advantages and uses of each technology. Foster Wheeler has recently been awarded a contract for four units of CFB OTSC technology, which utilizes a 2 on 1 configuration of two 550 MWe CFB OTSC boilers on two single 1000 MWe turbines. Essentially this provides a fuel-flexible low-emissions alternative to a 2 × 1000 MWe solid fuel power block.

N-Methyl-2-pyrollidone (NMP) has already been proven a good solvent for extraction of coal. It is believed that organic components of coal are likely to be dissolved with the solvolytic power of NMP. During dissolution process, original coal also gets disintegrated and thus helps in further extraction. Coal extraction highly depends on temperature, coal to solvent ratio, N-Methyl-2-pyrollidone (NMP) to Ethylenediamine (EDA) ratio and the size of coal particles. The process has been established in the laboratory. There is no reference available beyond lab scale. In present study, we are running a bench scale plant with 40 kg/batch capacity. Design of experiment was done in such a way that the optimum zone of the process gets evaluated for clean coal having low ash with high yield. Bench scale plant trial was conducted based on optimum zone developed during design of experiments (DOE). From the DOE analysis it was observed that feed size and coal to solvent ratio are important parameters for this process. Total 27 experiments (four factors with 3 level of variation) were designed through Box-Behnken model. It was observed that -0.5 mm feed size of coal, 150 °C extraction temperature, 17:1 NMP to EDA ratio, 1:9 coal to solvent ratio was optimum conditions. The results obtained at optimum conditions are 50% clean coal yield with 5% ash.

Long before recorded history, man began to dig into the earth's crust in a never ending search for useful materials. It is well known that more than half of the earth's crust is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. Silica and silica-containing material have a great many uses in modern society. This material, however, is potentially an extreme health hazard. Silicosis: Not a New Disease Centuries before the Christian Era, Hippocrates wrote of a lung disease common to those who mined in hard rock. He was obviously describing silicosis. It is also apparent from ancient writings that the Egyptians were aware of this malady. Dioscorides also wrote on this subject in the fifth century B.C. It is undoubtedly the oldest and best studied of the occupational lung diseases. Silicosis was certainly described by Agricola in his De Re Metallica published in 1556. Here he described lung disease among hard-rock miners. The original document was written in Latin and then translated in 1912 by Hoover and Hoover. One of these translators was Herbert L. Hoover, a former US president who once made his living as a mining engineer. More recently, there are numerous references in medical literature in the 19th and 20th centuries relating silica exposure to silicosis. There are specific references to mining in hard rock, as well as to sandblasting and a host of other industrial exposures. In 1919, Winslow described standards for measuring the efficiency of exhaust systems in polishing shops using sandblasting. These standards were equally applicable in the mining industry. As early as 1920, Winslow explored the efficiency of certain devices used to protect sand-blasters against the dust hazard. These devices were equally applicable in the hard-rock mining industry. The medical community recognized the silica health hazard in the early 1900s. Middleton described the illness in the British Medical Journal in 1929. He noted the danger to health at that time. D. Hunter mentions in his book, The Diseases of Occupations (1969), the monumental work of Merryweather in 1936, in which he surveyed the silicosis risk in Great Britain. He showed statistically that the average employment length of sandblasters who ultimately died of silicosis was 10.3 years, compared to 40.1 years for all fatal cases, irrespective of occupation. Sandblasting and hard-rock mining and drilling, obviously, are very hazardous occupations. Weil and Zisking of Tulane University wrote in 1975 that "it was known as early as 1935 that the course of silicosis is much more rapid in sandblasters than in miners or foundry workers. This can be explained by the fact that sandblasters are exposed to an almost pure siliceous dust containing high concentrations of respirable particles within the range of 1 to 3 micron size." Protecting the Worker The medical community recognized in the early 1900s the need for proper protective equipment for all of those who worked with siliceous materials. Middleton, writing in 1929, said: "The worker is then protected by a close fitting helmet with an air feed, much as in the case of an underwater diver. In spite of these precautions, cases of silicosis among sandblasters are being met with today. It is a matter for serious consideration whether a substitute, such as steel or iron grit, could not be used to replace the siliceous grit as the abrading material." C. E. A. Drying and preheating (partial induration) the green, unfired iron ore pellets is a means of reducing the energy required to produce metallized pellets. The Bureau of Mines processed three magnetite and two hematite concentrates through the unit operations of pelletizing, preheating in air, and reduction to metal to determine the effects of preheating upon the properties of the metallized pellets. The pellets were prepared in a 16-inch-diameter laboratory balling drum. Preheating and metallization were carried out in an externally heated 4-inch-ID by 4-inch-long stainless steel drum using air for the preheating atmosphere and lignite char as a reductant. The results 'varied considerably: two of the magnetites spalled when preheated in air at temperatures of 900° C and above, and the third magnetite and the hematite flotation concentrate required complete induration at 1,300° C to produce satisfactory pellets. The earthy hematite ore yielded excellent pellets at all preheat temperatures.

The Harris No. 1 Mine, located in Boone County, WV, has been longwalling the Eagle Coalbed for over 30 years. Harris has experienced numerous interactions associated with the extensive room-and-pillar and longwall mining operations which have been conducted in the overlying No. 2 Gas Coalbed. The problems have included roof falls, excessive rib sloughage, and gateroad and bleeder entry closure. A detailed evaluation of the multiple seam experiences at Harris No. 1 Mine was conducted as part of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) nation-wide multiple seam mining case history data base. One observation from the Harris gateroad case histories was that smaller, critically loaded, upper seam pillars seemed to cause more severe ground conditions than did wider pillars. The LaModel program was used to investigate this supposition, and the results confirmed that "critical" sized pillars do transmit the highest amounts of stress to adjacent seams. In addition, the data suggest that the probability of a major multiple seam mining interaction increases when the depth of cover is 1,000 ft or greater and when the Eagle seam pillars have a Analysis of Longwall Pillar stability factor less than 1.50.

As mudanças microestruturais que ocorrem ao longo do recozimento com o aumento da temperatura de recozimento foram observadas no aço inoxidável ferrítico por microscopia ótica. As amostras foram laminadas a frio e recozidas a temperatura de 700°C a 1.000°C, com variação de 50°C. Foram realizadas medidas de tamanho de grão e dureza. Os resultados indicam que o recozimento efetuado a partir de 850°C proporcionou recristalização completa. A maior diminuição da dureza foi observada para a amostra recozida a 800°C devido ao início da recristalização. O tamanho de grão encontrado para as amostras recozidas a 850°C e 1.000°C foi 12,6 µm e 28 µm, respectivamente.

Su función de probabilidad está orientada específicamente para un método de explotación o tunelería.

"This circular is part III of a series of papers reviewing the literature on air conditioning in mines, with particular reference to the health, safety, and efficiency of miners.4/ It deals with theoretical and practical methods of conditioning air in mines to correct or alleviate the health hazards described in parts I and II and discusses the results attained by some of the systems now in use in various-parts of the world.The principal conditions to be corrected or alleviated are the chemical qualities of mine air (especially when contaminated with toxic and noxious gases and dusts) and the physical qualities (abnormal mine temperatures and humidities) that emanate from various sources in underground workings. Air motion and barometric pressure are physical qualities also to be considered.From the standpoint of health, knowledge of the composition of the air, or atmosphere, in mines and other underground operations is of prime importance. Suitable control measures or plans of procedure to combat or eliminate the hazards from contaminants must be based upon accurate information obtained by the selection and use of proper methods of sampling and analyzing mine atmospheres (1).5/Conditioning air is one of the most essential factors to be considered in any underground workings, not only from the standpoint of health and safety but also with regard to efficiency and productivity. Without modern air-conditioning, the war's great demand upon the copper mines could hardly have been met, as the mechanical refrigeration cooled off sweltering holes in less than a month, whereas in the past it was standard practice to blow air through the tunnels for 3 years or so until they were cooled.This paper discusses methods of determining the chemical and physical qualities of mine air and their control. The Bureau of Mines is developing a new technological approach to handling the problems of fires in abandoned coal mines and waste banks. This new technology involves the accelerated combustion of "waste" coals in place (i.e., in situ) under controlled exhaust ventilation conditions, which allows for total management of the combustion products; including utilization of the heat produced" This new concept could significantly lower the costs of reducing the environmental and public safety hazards associated with waste coal fires, and could lead to the conversion of a coal waste to a coal resource. The controlled burnout technology has progressed from the laboratory stage to a full-scale field evaluation stage at the site of an abandoned-coal-mine fire. This first report describes the site selection, evaluation, and preparation, and the design and construction of the full-scale controlled burnout installation. Subsequent reports will deal with the results of the operational field trial.

Soil erosion is strongly related to soil hydraulic properties. Understanding how surface coal mining impacts those properties is important in developing effective management practices to control erosion during reclamation. Soils from undisturbed areas, roughly graded mine spoil, replaced topsoil before seeding, and revegetated areas at the Rosebud Mine in Eastern Montana were evaluated to determine impacts on soil hydraulic properties. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to determine soil hydraulic properties, including particle-size distribution, organic matter content, and saturated hydraulic conductivity. WEPP simulations and risk analyses were performed on the soil hydraulic property data to determine the impacts of changes on soil erosion. The hydraulic properties of the soils in each representative area have significant differences due to the mining and reclamation practices at the mine. WEPP simulations show that the potential for soil erosion increases due to mining activities disturbing the soil. WEPP simulations also indicate that the potential for erosion may return to pre-mining levels over time with effective revegetation practices.

Aços inoxidáveis são empregados em várias indústrias. A resistência à corrosão é um fator crítico na sua seleção. A degradação da resistência à corrosão destes aços é influenciada pela precipitação de Cr23C6, que causa a sensitização e favorece outros mecanismos de corrosão. Muitos autores procuram modelar esta precipitação associando a precipitação às medidas de sensitização. Tais modelos dependem de uma premissa ligada ao nível de precipitação, ou de depleção do cromo na matriz, que resulta na sensitização em testes tecnológicos. Assim, são de difícil validação. Este trabalho apresenta resultados da cinética de precipitação de Cr23C6 através da teoria clássica de nucleação e crescimento (software PRISMA) e modelos de difusão (software DICTRA). Curvas TTT simuladas para M23C6 com PRISMA são comparadas com curvas experimentais. Mostra-se que a energia interfacial tem forte efeito na cinética de precipitação do M23C6. O crescimento foi também modelado com DICTRA e supôs que o carboneto cresce no centro de uma esfera. Em certas condições, o inverso do volume desta esfera estima a densidade de núcleos. Os resultados indicam que o valor da energia interfacial é crítico para a simulação e, portanto, para modelar a sensitização nestes aços.

In recent years, thermodynamic data have been used to a greater degree than ever by the chemical and metallurgical engineer as a means of predicting and controlling chemical reactions. To satisfy the spiraling demand for basic physical data needed for the calculations, the Bureau of Mines is studying the heat capacities of a variety of chemical compounds at high and low temperatures. This paper is one of a series presenting such data. The heat capacities of two alkaline earth compounds, strontium bromide and strontium nitrate, were measured in a temperature range of 60° to 300° K. in an adiabatic calorimeter and at temperatures of 300° to about 1,200° K. in a Bunsen ice calorimeter. The construction and operation of the calorimeters are discussed in other reports.3 4 The heat-capacity data presented in this report were extrapolated to 0° K., and smooth values of heat capacity, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function were calculated and tabulated at even 10-degree intervals. The enthalpy data were fitted with algebraic equations by applying the method of least squares; calculations a£ heat-capacity values, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function were made at even 50-degree intervals. The heat and entropy of fusion of strontium bromide were calculated from the enthalpy measurements.

Rolling disc cutters are the business end of hard rock and mixed face tunnel boring machines (TBMs). Since their first successful employment on a TBM over fifty years ago, disc cutter technology has constantly evolved, allowing modern TBMs to excavate very hard and abrasive rock efficiently. Disc cutters have also been employed successfully on earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry machines, cutting rock under water and ground pressure. The range of materials excavated by machines today is broader, excavation rates higher and cutter costs lower than ever before, proving the value of investment in cutter development. This paper describes recent improvements in disc cutter components including cutter ring materials and processing, as well as improvements in lubricants, bearings, seals and cutter condition monitoring. These developments have resulted in more reliable cutters capable of operating in a wide range of geological conditions. Ultimately these improvements result in a better value for both contractors and project owners.

This report describes the approach, procedures, and results of a program to develop training materials for roof bolter operators. The objective of the program was to design and produce a training sequence which would prepare roof bolter trainees for job performance. Data was collected and analyzed using the general procedures of Instructional Systems Development (ISD). Input data came from a previous roof bolter training analysis program. This data was expanded and structured through a series of ISD steps: objectives hierarchies, media selection, syllabus, lesson specifications, and train¬ing materials development. The resulting program consisted of an ordered sequence of 15 lessons. The media mix for the 15 lessons included lectures, slide-tape lessons, and hands-on instruction using operational roof bolters. Contents of all lessons were reviewed and approved by the Bureau. The key recommendations were to (1) validate the materials and measure relative effectiveness of media formats; (2) survey mines for training resources and conditions - match materials to user capabilities, rather than selection state of the art technology/media; (3) develop job performance aids (JPAs) rather than simulators; (4) create a style/media/JPA development guide for use in future projects of this kind.

We have had occasion to produce wire of Np-237 in small diameters for use in some chemical experiments. Since the mechanical metallurgy of neptunium has not been investigated extensively, it seems desirable to report our successful extrusion technique. Because of the neptunium activity and its attendant health hazard the experimental work was done in glove boxes and related equipment also used for Pu-239. At room temperature a phase neptunium' is a hard (Dph -355) orthorhombic metal of high density (p = 20.45 g per cu cm). a neptunium transforms2 to tetragonal ß neptunium at about 280°C and this in turn transforms to bcc y neptunium at about 577°C. The y phase melts at about 637°C. A temperature of 340° to 345°C was selected for the extrusion, this temperature being a compromise be- tween a possible advantage of working with the presumably more plastic cubic y phase above 577°C and the risk of having the neptunium react with the alloy steel die to form the low-melting Fe-Np eutectic. A 0.75-in.-long, 0.26-in.-diameter ingot of good-purity* Np-237 was extruded by the direct *C = 230 ppm, Pu = 200 ppm, thirty-five metallic elements below limit of detection by spectrographic methods. process through flat-face orifices to form several sizes of wire ranging from 0.010 to 0.030 in. in diameter. Molybdenum disulfide was used as the die lubricant. The extrusion was done in a vacuum of about 10-4 torr to reduce reaction of the neptunium with atmospheric gases. British workers3 at Harwell have extruded neptunium under similar conditions. The force required to extrude 0.010-in.-diameter wire at the rate of 4 in. per min was 6000 lb, as measured with an electrical load cell. Wire 0.020 in. in diameter was extruded with a force of 4700 lb at a rate of 2 in. per min, and wire 0.030 in. in diameter was extruded with a force of 4000 lb at a rate of 1.3 in. per min. Two groups of methods are usually used in design procedures of underground excavation of dimension stone: the analytical and numerical methods of analysis. In all of these methods the in situ rock mass strength represents the main problem. This is due to massive rocks in dimension stone deposits, consisting of large blocks of rock separated with particular discontinuities, for which the Hoek-Brown empirical criterion, developed for jointed rock masses, cannot be realistically used to estimate rock mass strength, especially for a particular block of rock mass or a particular pillar. On the basis of the regular underground excavation process of dimension stone by separating blocks with the flat jack application, we developed the in situ flexural strength testing method. We carried out numerical analyses and evaluation of uncertainty of measurement in order to validate the in situ flexural strength testing method. On the basis of very good validation results, as well as results of the in situ flexural strength testing of exploitable layers on the ?Kanfanar? quarry, we introduced a new coefficient of reduction, which can be used for correction of other strength parameters determined by laboratory testing for obtaining a realistic value of rock mass strength.

"INTRODUCTION Retsof mine, adjoining the village of Retsof, Livingston County, New York, is about 5 miles northwest of Geneseo and 55 miles (air-line distance) due east of Buffalo. It is a single-bed rock-salt mine having extensive horizontal workings as much as 2-1/2 miles long and 1 mile wide and has been in continuous operation since 1885. Retsof tine is the largest producing salt mine in North America and is reputed to be the largest active salt mine in the world.Retsof is one of three large salt mines operated by the International Salt Co., Scranton, Pa.; T. Forster Courthope is general manager of Retsof and also of the company's Detroit salt mine in Michigan and has held that position for 27 years. He is assisted by Stanley Martin, general superintendent; R. Goetz, Maintenance superintendent; and John Riordan, mine superin¬tendent. All are old-timers at Retsof and, according to Courthope, contri¬buted the ""lion's share in bringing the mine to its present standard of safety.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTThis circular was made possible by the generous cooperation of T. For lubrication of open gear drives applied in rotary furnaces, often gear greases are used as well as for lubrication of gear boxes in difficult sealing conditions. The selection of the gear grease influences strongly the wear behavior. Investigations with flow greases NLGI 00 were made in a back-to-back test rig determining the weight loss due to wear acc. to the standardised procedure ISO 14635 part 3. Different influences like base oil viscosity, thickener type and additional solid lubricant type were analysed. Only the type and amount of solid lubricant shows a significant influence on the weight loss due to wear. Finally, a linear wear coefficient clT according to the calculation method of the wear amount according to Plewe is derived and can be used to transfer the test results to any gears in practice.

This examination report includes the salient statistics on the production of pegmatite minerals other than quartz and feldspar; and brief descriptions of 170 specific pegmatite deposits.
