A fractografia óptica é um método eficiente e de baixo custo para o exame de superfícies fraturadas, resultando em uma determinação típica e representativa da superfície de fratura, obtida com rapidez e precisão. O polimetilmetacrilato (PMMA), conhecido como acrílico, é um polímero semicristalino termoplástico de moderada resistência mecânica, leve, de boa conformabilidade, transparente e incolor. Por conter essas propriedades, é considerado um dos polímeros mais modernos sendo utilizado em muitas aplicações de engenharia. Em algumas dessas aplicações, é necessário o conhecimento do seu comportamento sob esforços mecânicos. Este trabalho visa caracterizar as fraturas ocorridas em CPs de PMMA, em ensaios mecânicos de tração uniaxial. As observações das fraturas das amostras ensaiadas mecanicamente foram realizadas com o auxílio de microscopia óptica. É feita a comparação das superfícies de fratura obtidas no ensaio mecânico identificando-se dois tipos de fratura.

The Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP) of SW China is host to magmatic Ni–Cu–(PGE) sulfide and Fe–Ti–V oxide deposits which contain economic to subeconomic concentrations of precious and base metals. The formation of a given deposit-type (ie sulfide versus oxide) is thought to be related to the type of parental magma (ie high-Ti versus low-Ti) and the subsequent processes (ie fractional crystallisation and sulfide segregation), which allowed for metal enrichment.We examined the PGE of Baima and Taihe oxide-bearing layered mafic intrusions from the ELIP (Shellnutt, Ma and Qi, in press), and compared them with the nearby Xinjie and Hongge intrusions as well as with the Emeishan flood basalts. The PGE results for the two intrusions are contrasting. The Baima gabbroic rocks are almost PGE-barren (SPGE < 4 ppb) whereas the Taihe gabbroic rocks are variable, but generally much higher in PGE concentrations (SPGE < 2 to ~300 ppb), although the gabbros from both intrusions are enriched in platinum-subgroup PGE (PPGE = Rh, Pt and Pd) relative to iridium-subgroup PGE (IPGE = Os, Ir and Ru). Cu/Zr, Ni/Ir, Y/Pt, Cu/Pd and Ni/Ir systematics suggest that the Baima rocks were derived from a relatively evolved, mafic, S-undersaturated parental magma that was affected by earlier sulfide segregation. In contrast, the Taihe rocks record evidence of both S-saturated and S-undersaturated conditions and that the parental magma was likely emplaced very close to S-saturation. Through comparison of the PGE contents in the Emeishan flood basalts and the Emeishan oxide-bearing intrusions, we provide a self-consistent model for ELIP that the PGE budget in a magma is not strictly controlled by magma series (high-Ti versus low-Ti), but very much by crustal contamination.CITATION:Ma, G, Shellnutt, J G and Qi, L, 2015. Robot Supported Moulding—this is the name of Herrenknecht Formwork’s entry to the world of automated segment production. What had been considered impossible for a long time, has been achieved by Herrenknecht experts together with the Swiss company Marti AG: unmanned segment production on the working line. The moulds open and close autonomously with the help of a hydraulic system. A robot cleans and greases the moulds at one work station and inserts the injection sockets at another. The next step will include further automation and digital networking of all processes from production to installation in the tunnel.

Because of the wide acceptance of the first edition, a revision which would supply up-to-date information on coal research and which would facilitate communication among organizations of similar interest seemed important. This compilation includes the names and activities of organizations of various types-government, university, private, and industry. The areas of investigation that each organization is engaged in are indicated in broad terms: Analysis and constitution, mining and geology, preparation, briquetting, combustion, high- and low-temperature carbonization, gasification, conversion to solid and liquid fuels, and health and safety. Publications issued by and describing the work of each organization are cited; almost all of the organizations also publish results of their investigations in the technical press. The steps for the beneficiation of iron ores differ from ore to ore, depending on the mineralogical phases of the particular iron ore and the nature of the association of the gangue minerals with iron oxide in that ore. The extent to which the beneficiation can be undertaken economically depends both on the amount and the nature of the gangue. The analysis of the phases present in an orebody optimises the mining and process operations (separation, beneficiation, sintering, etc).X-ray diffraction (XRD) provides qualitative and quantitative information about the main ore phases as well as the gangue mineralogy and the amorphous content present in a sample. In addition, modern quantification methods such as Rietveld refinement allow the calculation of the distribution of elements in solid solutions such the substitution of Fe with Al in goethite or hematite.The use of high speed detectors has made XRD an important tool for grade and process control. Finger printing of XRD data can facilitate multi-dimensional mapping of ore deposits and drill cores, identifying regions of favourable mineral compositions. Grade control using XRD can be completely automated and controlled remotely.The two case studies in this paper demonstrate how XRD and finger printing can be used for grade control, process optimisation and quality control of a goethitic and a magnetitic iron ore. The enormous potential of XRD as an inexpensive, reliable tool, useful in the characterisation of iron ores will be demonstrated.CITATION:K÷nig, U, 2013. "Underground coal gasification (UCG) is an unconventional mining method that converts coal in situ into a fuel gas that can be used for electricity generation. Residue products from UCG have the potential to leach into surrounding groundwaters. The geochemistry and leaching dynamics of these products are explored in this study. The products include char, ash, and the heat-affected zone in the surrounding rocks. Core samples from the pilot plant at Majuba are the first ever to be recovered from a UCG cavity in Africa, and they give key insights into the geochemistry of the gasification zone. Mineralogical and chemical analyses were performed on the samples, and acid-base accounting (ABA) was used to predict the acid-producing capacity of the gasification zone, particularly for char samples. Some of the char contained pyrite, although not all samples were acid-producing as determined by the ABA analysis. The ABA results showed that some of the unburned coal has moderate levels of sulphur, which could be the driving medium for acidic conditions. The ABA analysis indicated that water in contact with the gasification zone would eventually have a pH lower than 7, which could lead to acid rock drainage. These results form part of a preliminary investigation into the geochemistry of the reaction zone, post gasification. IntroductionUnderground coal gasification (UCG) is an unconventional mining method that converts coal in situ into a fuel gas that can be used for industrial purposes, including electricity generation. The gasification process leads to the formation of a cavity composed of char, rubble, and void space (Bhutto, Bazmi, and Zahedi, 2013). Residue products from UCG have the potential to leach into groundwater. These products include char (devolatilized coal), which can generate acid rock drainage (ARD). ARD is caused by the oxidation of sulphide minerals, which acidifies the leachate, thus increasing the solubility of some environmentally toxic metals (As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Zn, etc.) (Bouzahzah et al., 2015).The main source of ARD is oxidation of sulphide-bearing minerals due to interactions with oxygen, water, and microorganisms (Simate and Ndlovu, 2014; Kefeni, Msagati, and Mamba, 2017; Bouzahzah et al., 2015). Although ARD occurs naturally, it can be enhanced by mining activities that escalate exposure of sulphide minerals to water, air, and bacteria (Simate and Ndlovu, 2014). At the Majuba pilot plant, the unburned coal remaining in the cavity has been in contact with groundwater since the gasifier was shut down in 2013. It is possible that in a commercial UCG plant, most of the coal will be consumed and no unburnt coal will be left in the cavity. Most of the sulphur will be converted to H2S during the gasification process and transported with the syngas to surface, where it can be removed and captured as elemental sulphur."

O laser é uma ferramenta flexível e poderosa com muitas aplicações relevantes na indústria, principalmente na área de soldagem. Os lasers de hoje fornecem à indústria de soldagem soluções tecnicas a muitos problemas, e além de substituírem a soldagem convencional já estabelecida, ainda apresentam maior produtividade. O presente trabalho estudou o metal de solda do aço inoxidável duplex UNS S32205 empregado na indústria de petróleo e gás natural, analisando a influência da variação da largura temporal nas características microestruturais do cordão de solda obtido por soldagem com laser pulsado de Nd:YAG. Os resultados mostraram que a dimensão da zona termicamente afetada é extremamente pequena e a microestrutura do metal de solda apresenta menor fração volumétrica de austenita em relação aos processos convencionais.

O aço API 5L X60 é empregado na fabricação de dutos submarinos para a produção de óleo e gás. Com a ajuda de métodos de inspeção e estudos de mecânica da fratura é possível avaliar a severidade dos defeitos existentes, prever a falha dos componentes e tomar as devidas providências para evitar acidentes que podem levar a danos ambientais, perda de vidas e prejuízos financeiros. Com foco na redução do efeito do histórico de carregamento, avalia-se uma técnica alternativa de pré-trincamento por fadiga para a obtenção das curvas de crescimento de trinca por fadiga. Esta técnica permite a nucleação de trincas em carregamento cíclico compressivo, isentas de tensões residuais compressivas, que mascaram os resultados na determinação do limiar de propagação de trincas. Neste trabalho, foram utilizados corpos de prova do tipo C(T) para a nucleação das pré-trincas de fadiga. Foi avaliada a influência das características do carregamento, como o nível da força aplicada e a razão de carregamento no comprimento de saturação das trincas produzidas, a fim de se obter avanços no estabelecimento dessa metodologia. Com um carregamento mais intenso, o comprimento de saturação de trinca foi maior. Além disso, a diferença de comprimento entre o centro e as superfícies do corpo de prova se torna mais acentuada. O comprimento de saturação de trinca é menor que o raio da zona plástica e maior que a região máxima governada por tensões residuais trativas. Para carregamentos menos severos, a trinca cresce de maneira mais uniforme e alcança comprimentos de saturação de trinca menores. A razão de carregamento não interfere significativamente no comprimento de saturação de trinca.

A direct leaching process of sulphidic zinc-based concentrates in aqueous sulphuric acid solutions has been developed by the V.M. R & D Department. By a very accurate control of the oxidation potential of the leach solution, this process enables a separate recovery of the zinc, copper, silver, lead and sulphur of the concentrate and makes it extremely attractive for treating more complex ores. The iron, solubilized during leaching, is eliminated out of the zinc solution by means of the V.M. goethite process. Alternative flow sheets for a conventional zinc electrolysis plant are presented.

Application of Gy?s formula is appropriate for calculation of the Fundamental Error (FE) prior to samples being collected at any stage of the minerals process, provided that sampling parameters K and a (alpha) have been determined by calibration of the ores. Two types of calibration procedure are well established in the industry, the Hetrogeneity test and the 32-piece sampling tree experiment. The sampling tree experiment uses the variance and average grade of metal analyses from four series of samples at different nominal fragment size, as the basic input data. Pierre Gy suggested the cube as an appropriate exponent of the nominal fragment size for use in his equation. More recent work suggests that this exponent is variable and characteristic of specific ores and therefore requires calibration. The method described here explains the experimental procedure of the calibration. It is then possible to calculate a sampling nomogram using the sampling parameters K and a. This allows the sampler to determine a suitable protocol for the sampling event that will ensure that the FE does not exceed a predetermined precision at any point in the sampling procedure.

Limestone-based material shows great promise for removal of arsenic from water. In laboratory tests, it has removed more than 95% or arsenic and more than 99% of cadmium and lead. In addition, the waste material appears to be suitable for recycling or disposal in an ordinary landfill. However, the efficiency of limestone for arsenic removal could be improved. Recent research has shown that iron treatment of limestone can enhance its arsenic-removal efficiency greatly, increasing its attractiveness as an alternative to other methods.

Ten years ago, a careful comparative analysis would make more sense. Control approaches had very distinctive differences where users needed to choose the right approach.

During the last decade it has been established that conventional flotation control strategies based on classical control theory result in significant increases in grade, recovery, and operating-cost savings. In the current report a description of an advanced model-based control philosophy is presented. The derivation and verification of a simplified flotation model is described. The implementation of a Kalman filter for estimation of unmeasured variables for input to controllers is discussed. Several control strategies using the model-based approach are described, emphasizing the nonlinear nature of the flotation plant. Expected trends in the implementation of such model-based flotation control strategies in the future are discussed.

A exigência atual de novos materiais com alta resistência mecânica levou a um aumento da pesquisa abordando os aços de alta dureza e baixa liga. Estes aços possuem características que os qualificam para uma elevada gama de aplicações, dentre as quais destaca-se o uso em blindagem balística. O estudo das falhas decorrentes à altas taxas de deformação apontam como principal causa o surgimento das bandas de cisalhamento adiabático. Este trabalho visa caracterizar a microestrutura de um aço de alta dureza e baixa liga, após a realização de um ensaio balístico com um projétil 7.62x51 mm perfurante (Pf). A análise superficial do material foi realizada por meio de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), onde pode-se observar a ocorrência de uma fratura após a formação da banda de cisalhamento adiabático (adiabatic shear band).

The Huntly West Mine has undergone significant changes in the last two years, which will affect the remainder of the mine's life. The paper describes the evolvement of plans and an overview of the technical considerations made in planning for and implementing the first New Zealand longwall operation. The technical investigations involve the longwall equipment, exploration, ventilation and strata control. The focus on these areas was to ensure that unacceptable project risks were addressed. Implementation of longwall mining at West Mine is planned in three phases, Development, Panel One extraction trial, and Full Longwall operation.   At present the development phase is complete, longwall installation is in progress and production start-up is planned for the end of August, 1991.

Halliburton Services and Brown & Root have developed a unique foundation system that blends oilfield and construction technologies to construct deep foundations which offer significant advantages across a variety of soil profiles. This highly efficient system is being developed to meet the construction industry's needs into the 21st Century. Based on a concept initially introduced to Halliburton Services by V.L. Schellhorn in 1987, Halliburton combined their existing cement slurry mixing and pumping technology with oilfield drilling practices and a new tool design to field test the viability of the concept. Results looked encouraging, and Halliburton asked it's sister company, Brown & Root to evaluate and further develop the process. With Brown & Root's knowledge of the construction industry, the original concept has developed into a viable and efficient foundation construction system.

Cave mining is an underground mass mining technique. The largest projects, which are known as ‘super caves’, produce hundreds of thousands of tons of ore per day, which involves large footprints with considerable column height, and have a life of mine of over 20-40 years. These operations are typically located deep, under high stresses and in competent rock masses, making initiation and propagation of the caving process harder to manage. These challenges must be confronted by optimizing the fragmentation of the orebody to achieve smaller size blocks that will result in consistent caving and improved flow of the ore from the drawpoints. To achieve better performance from the drawpoints, preconditioning is applied to fragment and damage the material required to cave. We present a proposed design for preconditioning in underground mines, considering the challenges that these large-scale mines are already facing, based on a comprehensive analysis of current design parameters, case studies, and sensitivity analyses using numerical models.

Fine coal cleaning by froth flotation has become common practice in the U.S. with more than 80,000 tons treated in this way per day. In spite of this large tonnage, developments in the automatic control of coal flotation circuits have lagged significantly behind those for mineral systems. One reason such developments have been limited is that instruments have not been available for the on-line measurement of carbon or ash and another critical variables in coal slurries. A second reason is that the influence of the operating variables on coal flotation has not been completely understood. During the last few years some of the required instrumentation has been developed and an improved knowledge of the flotation process itself has occurred through mathematical modeling; as a result certain control strategies for coal flotation are beginning to emerge. This paper attempts to evaluate several control strategies using a detailed flotation dynamic simulator, DYNAFLOAT. After constructing a process matrix for the system of interest, promising alternatives for linking manipulated and controlled variables have been analyzed. In order to develop combined grade and recovery control strategies, the authors found it necessary to construct a grade/recovery map with the aid of the simulator to drive the system to known final, feasible grade/recovery operating conditions. Finally, an advanced strategy which uses an on-line model to identify disturbances and take control actions is proposed.
