Os aços maraging apresentam baixo teor de carbono e possuem uma estrutura cristalina martensítica tetrágonal de corpo centrado (TCC). Estes aços oferecem uma combinação única de alta resistência mecânica e boa tenacidade à fratura. Nesse trabalho, foi realizado um estudo in situ de radiação síncrotron na busca de avaliar a estabilidade da austenita revertida no aço maraging 18%Ni grau 300. Um corpo de prova do aço em estudo com dimensões padronizadas foi solubilizado a 840°C por 1 hora e resfriada ao ar. Em seguida foi aquecida a uma taxa de 10°C/s até 630°C, mantendo-se então nesta temperatura pelo tempo de 12 minutos. Posteriormente a este tratamento, a amostra foi resfriada até a temperatura ambiente a taxa de 15°C/s. Em cada estágio de ciclo térmico foi realizada medidas de radiação síncrotron com comprimento de onda (? = 1.0332 Å). As frações volumétricas das fases austenita revertida e martensita presentes em cada etapa do ciclo térmico foram calculadas utilizando o método de comparação direta e através da área integrada relativa aos picos das fases. A estabilidade mecânica da austenita revertida sob carga externa foi estudada usando radiação in situ síncrotron.

Falls of small pieces of rock from between roof bolts continue to cause fatalities and to injure hundreds of coal miners each year. Roof screen is the most effective way to prevent these incidents, but some mines are reluctant to use it because they believe installing screen can be awkward, expensive and time-consuming. The most common type of roof bolting machine used in mines today is the dual boom, outside-controlled roof bolter. Mines who install roof screen using these machines have developed some machine modifications and techniques to ease roof screen installation. This paper describes some successful techniques and machine modifications that are being used in productive mines to assist with roof screen installation. Since the material handling involved with roof screen installation can expose miners to an increased risk of musculoskeletal injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) ergonomists, designed machine modifications and implemented a series of tests to evaluate roof screen handling procedures for outside-controlled, dual boom roof bolting machines. Roof screen installation can also have a positive economic impact on a mine by reducing the cost of injuries, workers’ compensation, required spot or re-bolting, and clean-up of long term travel and belt entries.

As a part of a comprehensive survey of the Adirondack region, the Bureau of Mines, 1944 and 1945, conducted investigation of magnetic deposits at Dennemora, Russia Station, Redford-Clayburg, Standish, and the Ausable river region. Later in 1945, the Federal Geological Survey, started an aeromagnetic survey of the area and completed it in .1946. The Bureau of Mines extended its magnetic surveys in 1946 in the Redford-Clayburg area. In 1947 the Bureau of Mines .diamond-drilled throe holes in the Redford-Clayburg district. Clinton County has one active magnetite mine at Lyon Mountain and inactive mines at Palmer Hill and Arnold Hill, as well as along the Saranac River.

The Bureau of Mines is developing melting data for binary combinations of the alkaline earth fluorides and yttria to facilitate the formulation of slag compositions. The present report deals with the CaF2-Y203 system for which solidus and liquidus temperatures and solid solubilities were determined. The information is presented as the phase diagram. All specimen compositions were blended from high-purity materials and encapsulated in Mo or Pt20Rh prior toheat treatment. Liquidus temperatures were determined by ceramographic examination of heat-treated and quenched specimens. Solidus temperatures were determined by differential thermal analysis and by electron microprobe analysis of quenched specimens. Terminal solid solubilities were derived by parametric methods. The peritectic system was found to be pseudobinary due to the formation of yttrium oxyfluoride at temperatures near the liquidus. The peritectic point occurs at 7 mole pct Y203 and 1,438° ± 5°C. The terminal solid solubility of Y203 in CaF2 decreases from 7 mole pct at 1,438° C to 1 mole pct at 1,100° C, and the solubility of CaF2 in Y203 decreases from 9.5 to 7 mole pct over the same temperature interval.

The techniques described employ a computerized analysis and a new method of data presentation called composite graphing. The underlying theory, its practical application to the data, and the experimental equipment and procedure are described.

The Ernest Henry mine is a transverse sublevel cave (SLC), which is relatively unique due to the 45 degree inclination of the orebody. To economically recover ore, each sublevel is horizontally offset from the previous level by around 25 m, depending on the orebody geometry. Mine development, slotting and initial production within this zone occurs in a high stress abutment that increases in magnitude at depth. These areas are seismically active and close to the hanging wall where cave propagation is yet to initiate. High stress conditions and the close proximity to the cave seismogenic zone results in challenging geotechnical conditions in the step out zone of each level and requires management of hazards including stress driven rockfalls, rock bursts and pillar failure.This paper outlines how these hazards were forecast using numerical modelling and geotechnical monitoring. Risk management techniques included dynamic ground support design, development of a new mine layout and extraction sequence as well as delayed re-entry into seismically active areas. Ongoing monitoring, instrumentation measurements and field observations were used to track the effectiveness of the controls.Future production levels are forecast to experience increasing stress and seismicity, which will increase demand on excavations and installed ground support. Os aços com médio teor manganês são uma classe da terceira geração de aços avançados de alta resistência (AHSS), combinam propriedades mecânicas como ductilidade e resistência mecânica e são assistidos pelo efeito TRIP, características determinantes para sua aplicação na indústria automobilística. Convencionalmente, tais ligas são produzidas por meio de laminação a quente e a frio, seguidas de recozimento intercrítico. No entanto, o trabalho a morno têm ganhado interesse com o intuito de reduzir custos e tempo operacionais. O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar a influência da laminação a quente e a morno por meio de análises de microscopia óptica, eletrônica de varredura, difração de raios x, microdureza Vickers e técnicas de EBSD em um aço 8Mn- 0,08C. Observou-se uma microestrutura mais refinada e deformada no material laminado a morno com um maior percentual de austenita retida, o que derivou uma menor dureza. Na amostra laminada a quente, o valor médio de dureza evidenciou uma microestrutura martensítica de baixo teor de carbono. Em relação à textura verificou-se uma maior intensidade de componentes da fibra a na amostra laminada a morno devido a um maior grau de encruamento neste processamento termomecânico.

Compósitos poliméricos reforçados com fibras naturais tem sido alvo de diversos estudos na atualidade. A determinação de suas propriedades tecnológicas, bem como o tipo de fratura apresentada são importantes ferramentas para a fabricação desses novos materiais. Assim, esse trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a região da fratura de compósitos poliméricos reforçados com fibras de bagaço de cana-deaçúcar ensaiados em tração. Os compósitos foram ensaiados em tração e a região da fratura foi analisada por microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Os resultados mostraram que tanto a matriz polimérica quantos os compósitos apresentaram fratura frágil, evidenciada por marcas de rio.

This paper summarizes the results of the rock mechanics monitoring program performed as part of Old Ben Coal Company's longwall coal mining demonstration project conducted in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines. The work described herein included installation of instruments, collection of data and data analysis performed during mining of the first longwall panel in Mine No. 24. The rock mechanics monitoring program included both surface and underground instrumentation and was designed to achieve the following purposes: 1 -To provide the capability to observe unusual situations during mining so that remedial measures could be instituted quickly 2 -To formulate design guidelines for future longwall mining efforts; 3 -To evaluate surface subsidence, and its character, rate and potential effects on cultural features, and to develop criteria to assist in predicting subsidence for other mines having similar roof conditions. Six previous attempts with longwall methods in Old Ben Coal Company's Hine 21 had been unsuccessful due to roof control problems. A description of these attempts is given by Moroni (1973). A wide range of materials are used in hydraulic backfilling operations and the pipeline flow behaviour of these mixtures varies considerably. It is shown that despite the large differences in constituent materials and flow behaviour, a common approach can be applied to analysing the flow of all hydraulic backfills. This is extended to include a rational design approach for backfill distribution systems. The use and limitations of pipe loop tests as a design aid is discussed. Backfill quality control is identified as a key area where improvement needs to be made to enhance the reliability of backfill system operation.

CIMVal is a special committee of CIM formed on the recommendation of the Mining Standards Task Force of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission.After solicitation of views and consultation with various interested parties, the CIMVal Draft Standards and Guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties were released for comment in February 2002 and were finalized in February 2003. CIMVal’s objective was for the standards to be used by the mining industry in general and to be adopted by Canadian securities regulators and Canadian stock exchanges. To that end, the standards contain many of the definitions and concepts of National Instrument 43-101, Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects, which came into force in February 2001.The intent of the CIMVal Standards and Guidelines is that mineral property valuations be carried out by appropriately qualified individuals and that all relevant information be fully disclosed. It consists of two parts: standards, which are mandatory in the valuation of mineral properties, and guidelines, which elaborate on the standards and provide guidance and recommendations for the valuation process and for reporting."

Um ensaio por partículas magnéticas é um método não destrutivo utilizado na detecção de descontinuidades superficiais e subsuperficiais em produtos laminados. Este método consiste em submeter a peça a um campo magnético, com aglomeração de partículas magnetizáveis nos pontos onde há descontinuidade. As partículas usadas podem ser de diferentes cores, dimensões e formas. A partícula fluorescente sob a luz ultravioleta demonstra melhor resultado para detecção de pequenas descontinuidades. Para ampliar o campo de visão ensaiado e realçar o contraste entre partícula e peça a radiação ultravioleta deve garantir uniformidade, intensidade e comprimento de onda adequado. Essas exigências motivaram o trabalho da Gerdau junto com a Metal Chek, representante da Spectroline, no desenvolvimento de uma solução inovadora. Na Linha de Inspeção de Tarugos da Gerdau Ouro Branco o uso de luminárias ultravioletas de LED - Light Emitting Diode tornou-se uma alternativa que proporcionou ganho em eficiência e em confiabilidade na tomada de decisão do inspetor de qualidade, baixo consumo de energia, custo de manutenção e satisfação dos clientes. A implantação das luminárias de LED refletiu na prática a evolução da qualidade do produto, além de melhores condições em meio ambiente, saúde e segurança para o inspetor.

Recent hotel investment projects in China often involve very tight programmes for design and construction. An example given in this paper involves a 24-storey reinforced concrete hotel tower with 460 bedrooms and a 3-level podium commercial complex. The building is supported by relatively widely spaced columns and shear walls below which 88 number large diameter piers were excavated through fill, silty and bouldery clay on to dolerite and slate at depths between 15 to 3 0m below ground level. Whereas much experience has been accumulated in Hong Kong, hand-excavated pier foundation was only adopted for the first time in Dalian. This paper describes and discusses the various factors influencing the choice of the type and design of the foundation system. The criteria for determining appropriate founding levels are then explained. During installation, revisions to the acceptance procedure were made to cater for local conditions. Emphasis is placed on the role of the geotechnical engineer in making on-site decisions during construction. The advantage of the foundation system in accommodating on-site changes resulting from local complex ground conditions is demonstrated. The pier foundations were successfully completed ahead of programme.

Screening efficiency models developed to date rely almost exclusively on empirical formulas based upon large amounts of acquired operating data. A screening model was developed using a combination of empirical coefficients and explicit mathematical expressions which quantify screening phenomena. A series of screening tests was run to supply data for purposes of correlation and empirical coefficient evaluation. The model has been implemented as a digital computer program. The validity of the modeling procedure has been established by laboratory testing. Results generated by the model have been used to compile an applications handbook, which can be used to predict screening performance in lieu of using the computer program.

As curvas limite de conformação (CLC) são utilizadas há mais de 50 anos. Propostas inicialmente para o desenvolvimento de produtos provenientes da indústria automobilística, em função das necessidades apresentadas pela indústria de estampagem elas são aplicadas atualmente de maneira geral na produção de inúmeros tipos de peças, oferecendo previsões de possíveis falhas e/ou defeitos durante as etapas do processo de estampagem. As CLC´s permitem prever o afinamento excessivo, enrugamento, estiramento e é claro, a fratura da peça. A raiz da curva limite de conformação (CLC0) é considerada como a mínima deformação obtida pela curva, ou seja, a obtenção de deformações superiores pode levar a peça a falha. As ligas de latão compostas por cobre e zinco, são utilizadas em inúmeras aplicações que necessitam de excelente estampabilidade, como o repuxo profundo, objetivado na fabricação de projéteis. Desta forma, torna-se interessante o entendimento da CLC ou CLC0 para liga de latão em estudo. A obtenção da CLC0 através de ensaios de tração uniaxial no plano da chapa pode ser realizada de acordo com corpos de prova de formatos específicos, como os propostos por Björklund e Nilsson (2014), IRSID (1975) e Wagoner (1980 e 1981). Concluiu-se que o corpo de prova proposto pelo IRSID (1975) é o que melhor se apresentou na determinação das deformações e1 x e2 e com rompimentos dos corpos de prova na região central.

Macraes Mine is a large-scale open-cut and underground gold mine located in Central Otago, on the South Island of New Zealand. This paper presents the role of geological mapping in the grade control process at Macraes Open Pit as a case study, and demonstrates how systematic geological mapping can add significant value to the mining cycle. Geological mapping has proved to be a valuable foundation for orebody interpretation and analysis.Practical applications and lessons learnt are summarised, including predictive control of the orebody, improvement of geotechnical modelling, and identification of further exploration targets.

THIS investigation was undertaken primarily to establish the relations existing between temperature and mechanical properties in molybdenum, nickel, and an aluminum-copper alloy. Molybdenum (m.p. 2500° C.) was chosen because it is partly similar to tungsten and partly similar to the common ductile metals. Also it is known to furnish, by proper treatment, a desirable material to use in studying relation of grain size and physical properties. The molybdenum used was of the quality that is drawn into wire 0.003 in. in diameter for use as filament supports in incandescent lamps; chemical analysis shows less than 0.1 per cent. of impurities. Nickel belongs to the same class as iron. Its melting point is 1450° C. and an allotropic change at about 370° C. results in a loss of magnetism above that temperature. This feature made nickel doubly valuable for the purposes of these tests. The nickel used was obtained from the Driver-Harris Co. as 0.090 in. (2.3-mm.) wire, annealed; analysis showed 99.8 per cent. nickel and 0.150 per cent. iron. Aluminum is one of the low melting-point metals. Some tensile tests at elevated temperatures have been reported by Bengough but the possibility of learning more with the low temperature and sensitive apparatus available recommended this metal. The samples marked Al are an aluminum-copper alloy; they contained 3 per cent. copper, 0.42 per cent. iron, and 0.21 per cent. silicon. The presence of the copper somewhat complicates the analysis of the results; but the action of copper in aluminum has been studied so that its influence might have been foretold, in part at least. The material and analyses were furnished by the Aluminum Castings Co. The nickel wire, which was deformed at 400° C., was drawn under a bath of molten lead and through a die, which also was immersed in the bath. This examination report includes the salient statistics on the production of pegmatite minerals other than quartz and feldspar; and brief descriptions of 170 specific pegmatite deposits.
