Given the recent focus on powered haulage incidents within the U.S. mining sector, an appraisal of collision avoidance/warning systems (CXSs) through the lens of the research literature is timely. This paper aims to evaluate the maturity of CXS technology through the application of a technology readiness assessment (TRA) to research literature identified by systematic search methods. Results indicate that much of the evidence for CXS performance is at lower levels of maturity: that is, components and prototypes tested in a laboratory and in relevant environments. Less evidence exists for CXS performance at higher levels of maturity — that is, systems evaluated within operational environments — despite the existence of commercial products in the marketplace. This lack of evidence at higher maturity levels within the scientific literature highlights the need for more peer-reviewed research to evaluate CXS technologies. Additionally, results of the review reveal that most of the literature relevant to CXS technologies is focused on vehicle-to-vehicle interactions, which contrasts with haul truck fatal accident statistics that indicate most are due to vehicle-to-environment interactions, such as traveling through a berm. Lastly, the relatively small number and segmented nature of relevant studies suggest there is a need for more incremental research that would better facilitate the improvement of CXS technologies. This progression could be achieved through continued long-term interest and support for CXS technology research.

The Rise and Shine Shear Zone is a mineralised low-angle deformation zone traceable for at least 7 km through biotite zone schist of the Dunstan Range, central Otago. The zone is commonly believed to be similar to the actively mined Macraes deposit. The Rise and Shine Shear Zone occurs in the immediate footwall of the Thomsons Gorge Fault, a regional scale Cretaceous normal fault that juxtaposes chlorite zone schist against biotite zone schist. Most mineralised rocks are deformed and record a progression from early stages of semiductile deformation to more brittle cataclasis. Folds in mineralised rocks trend northwards. The mineralised schist is hydrothermally altered with variable silicification, sericitisation, chloritisation, replacement of titanite by rutile and carbonate alteration. Gold is associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite and occurs in both ductile and brittle microstructures. Sheared and mineralised schist is cut by north-striking fault zones which host mineralised quartz veins. Veins in the shear zone contain hydrothermal albite. Trace element analyses show enrichment in As, U, Th and rare earth elements. Many of the above features are similar to Macraes deposit, but there are important differences. In particular, the Macraes deposit is hosted in lower grade rocks and truncated beneath by a normal fault, Macraes has no U or Th enrichment, Macraes veins have no albite and folds at Macraes trend NW-W. Rise and Shine mineralised rocks have no Cr enrichment and no hydrothermal graphite.

El presente texto describe la geología económica del depósito aurífero Alpacay ubicado en Arequipa, Perú. El depósito Alpacay es un típico depósito mesotermal, filoniano que es explotado por la Cía Minera Yanaquihua, donde el mineral es procesado en una planta de cianuración, gravimetría y flotación. Costa. Asímismo, se realiza en la Franja Aurífera Nazca-Ocoña que alberga innumerables minas y depósitos en vetas angostas como Arirahua, San Juan de Chorunga, Chalhuane, Las Clavelinas, María Eugenia, entre otros. La alteración es básicamente argílica en la vecindad de las vetas y propilítica hacia el exterior.

A utilização de fluidos de corte no processo de retificação tem como principais objetivos lubrificar e refrigerar a zona de corte, limpar a superfície do rebolo e minimizar a corrosão. Observa-se que a maioria dos óleos de corte aplicados na zona de retificação apresentam vantagens quanto às propriedades lubrificantes e corrosivas, porém perdem seu poder de refrigeração, quando comparados aos fluidos emulsionáveis. O presente estudo tem como objetivo avaliar o ganho da propriedade refrigerante dos óleos vegetais com e sem aditivos, e compará-la com a dos fluidos de corte integral. Para isso foi realizada análise da curva de resfriamento, termogravimetria (TG), ponto de fulgor e teste de corrosão em amostras com e sem aditivos de óleo vegetais (soja e milho) e de um fluido de corte mineral parafínico. As curvas de resfriamento foram obtidas conforme a ASTM D6200 e as curvas TG foram determinadas em uma termobalança. O ponto de fulgor foi determinado conforme a ASTM D92-25. O teste de corrosão foi realizado conforme a NBR 10505. O ponto de fulgor e a termogravimetria indicaram uma maior estabilidade ao aumento da temperatura dos óleos vegetais em relação ao mineral. Os óleos vegetais analisados apresentaram melhor capacidade de resfriamento quando comparados com o fluido de corte mineral sendo sua ordem apresentada da seguinte maneira: milho > soja > mineral. A amostra aditivada de óleo de soja também promoveu aumento da capacidade de resfriamento e diminuição da estabilidade térmica.

The dissolution of metals from various metal-mine tailings has been studied through a series of submerged tailings batch tests at U.S. Bureau of Mines laboratories. Tailings selected for this study included both reactive (as determined by column leaching studies) and benign tailings. Metal mobilization in aerated (97 pct saturated with oxygen) samples appeared to be consistently greater than metal dissolution from stagnant (79 pct or 70 pct saturated with oxygen) waters. In the early weeks of the study, sulfate concentrations increased with solid-liquid contact time, while calcium dissolution remained nearly constant. Metal concentrations varied in relation to solid-liquid contact time and aeration. Leachate pH appeared to be nearly independent of solid-liquid contact time for basic tailings. Reactive tailings having both a submerged and a surface component demonstrated increased metal mobility.

Underground stone mines are vulnerable to karst void formations due to the erosion of carbonate rocks by groundwater flow. The voids or cavities may lead to hazards including ground collapse and sudden outflow of clay-rock sediments during the development of the mine. This study evaluates the effect of karst voids on the strength of pillars in an underground room-and-pillar limestone mine. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys were interpreted to map the void boundaries inside a karst-affected pillar. A combination of LiDAR scanning and virtual discontinuity mapping is used to formulate the discrete fracture network (DFN). Discrete element modeling (DEM) helps simulate the effect of karsts and discontinuities in the pillar models with varying stress. It is observed that the cavities may lead to a significant reduction in pillar strength. Apart from posing a hazard to miners and machinery, any advance into these cavities may disrupt mine operations. This research serves as an initial step toward understanding the importance of pillar design in underground stone mines affected by karst voids to prevent local instability or pillar failures.

This paper relates entirely to the casting of brass under fluid pressure in steel dies. Die castings of metals and alloys of low melting point have been available for many years but the development of brass die castings has been relatively recent, occurring within the past five years. The successful developnlent of brass die castings has resulted from the availability of alloy steels that would give satisfactory life as dies and the development of suitablc die-casting machines. The melting point of copper is 1084" C. (1983" F.) and of a high brass about 900" C. (1652" F.), as compared to 327.5" C. (621.5" F.) for lead, 419.4' C. (786.7" F.) for zinc and 658.7" C. (1217.7" F.) for aluminum, temperatures that are indicative of the casting temperatures required for the various types of alloys, of which the melting points are somewhat lower than those of the pure metals. Type of Die-casting Machine In the well-known plunger and gooseneck types of die-casting machines used for casting the alloys of relatively lower melting point, much of the working mechanism is immersed in the molten alloy. For alloys having the relatively high melting point of brass, this obviously is impossible. Machines with a separate melting chamber are essential. Two rather distinct types are in extensive use at the present time, the Pack and Polak machines, the former designed by Charles Pack and developed at the American Brass Co., the latter developed by Joseph Polak, of Prague, Czeclioslovakia. The principles of operation of these machines have been described in articles by Pack1,2,3 and by Sieg.4

"The Aqqaluk deposit is a lead-zinc ore body that lies immediately north of the Main Pit at Teck Cominco’s Red Dog Mine in Alaska. It is scheduled to begin production in 2011 or 2012. A project team was formed in late 2004 to plan and implement an ore characterisation and metallurgical evaluation on the Aqqaluk ore. The main objective of this program was to facilitate the transition from Main Pit to Aqqaluk ore in the Red Dog concentrator. The program will develop a detailed, spatially-oriented characterisation of the Aqqaluk deposit attributes including lithology, ore geochemistry, bulk mineralogy, ore texture, as well as evaluating the metallurgical characteristics of ore hardness, process water geochemistry, bench-scale floatability and mineral liberation in ground feed, concentrate and tails. Developing correlations between the metallurgical response and the ore characterisation data is key to the emerging science of geometallurgy. This on-going program is a technical due diligence study that aims to reduce the risk associated with processing a new ore and to provide predictive information for mining and stockpile preparation.The test work to date has focused on characterising the five ore zones currently identified in the Aqqaluk deposit, namely: Siliceous (sub-divided to High Zn:Fe and Low Zn:Fe), Vein, Median Plate and Baritic ores. It identified a number of challenges associated with surface oxidation, or weathering, of the core samples and outlined a program for future sample collection and storage. Metallurgical testing evaluated ore hardness by a variety of methods. Preliminary floatability studies have been completed and some initial links have been established between the ore characteristics and the flotation response. Soluble mineral weathering products, the relative abundance of pyrite and marcasite and the iron content in the sphalerite grains have all shown a correlation to mineral recovery.As new core is received, both the ore characterisation and the metallurgical testing will be continued with a view to strengthen the existing correlations and develop new links."

On December 12, 2018 at 4:14 AM EST, an earthquake registering a 4.4 magnitude on the Richter Scale occurred in central Tennessee. According to a survey posted on the USGS website, this earthquake was felt throughout the southeast and even as far away as Arnold Nebraska. That’s over 900 miles (1,448 kilometers) from the epicenter. We recorded the vibrations from this earthquake on 44 different seismographs that were set up with remote access to continuously monitor vibrations from blasting activities. Having this data gave us an opportunity to compare the vibrations caused by earthquakes and blasting. A simple observation of the amplitudes, frequencies, and durations is enough to notice that vibrations from earthquakes are very different than vibrations caused by blasting in mining and construction. We were also able to observe the dissipation of the vibrations from the earthquake and see if the low frequencies, that are typical of earthquakes, dissipate at a consistent rate. Regression calculations were performed in order to see if there was a good data fit and if a specific vibration prediction could be made based on the magnitude of an earthquake. “How does quarry/mining/construction blasting compare to the Richter Scale?” This is a very common question that we get from homeowners when discussing vibrations due to blasting activities. This paper is intended to provide some simple answers for such a complicated question. Both the Richter and Mercalli scales are compared to the particle velocities as they were recorded from this earthquake.

During recent years there has been a marked increase in the use of explosives in Queensland coal mines. Delay detonators have been introduced and their use has extended with the wider application of mechanised methods of mining.The need for careful study of the characteristics of delay detonators is stressed so that the advantages of simultaneous firing, from the points of view of safety and efficiency, may be obtained. With their use new potential hazards are introduced. These hazardsare considered and means whereby the overall safety may be improved are discussed.The increase in the number of misfires since the introduction of delay detonators is shown and the examination of misfired detonators is described. Lessons to be learned! from these misfires are noted and details are given of the essential requirements for safe and efficient blasting using delay detonators.INTRonUCTIONOne of the aims of mechanization in coal mines is to reduce the physical effort applied to the winning of coal. Explosives play an important part in achieving this and, following the introduction of power borers for the drilling of shot-holes in Queensland coal mines, much of the arduous work associated with coal getting has been eased. During recent years there has been a marked increase in the consumption of explosives, as shown in Table 1, and it must be the aim of all to use these explosives safely and efficiently. Estudou-se as propriedades de filmes finos de TiO2 depositados em substratos de vidro.Os filmes foram obtidos pelos métodos Sol-gel e Evaporação por feixe de elétrons (e-beam) visando obter a propriedade autolimpante. Essa propriedade dos filmes de TiO2 está relacionada à hidrofilicidade fotoinduzida e pode viabilizar várias aplicações tecnológicas como a obtenção de vidros autolimpantes para módulos fotovoltaicos. O tetraisopropóxido de titânio foi utilizado como precursor no método sol-gel com deposição dip-coating. Na evaporação e-beam, partiu-se do TiO2 sólido. Os filmes passaram por diferentes tratamentos térmicos e as propriedades dos filmes obtidos pelas duas técnicas de deposição. A cristalinidade da fase anatásio foi identificada por DRX de baixo ângulo. A espessura foi medida por perfilometria e Microscopia de Força Atômica, obtendo-se valores próximos de 170 nm. Parâmetros como topografia, rugosidade e tamanho dos cristais de anatásio foram avaliados. A transmitância das placas de vidro com os filmes depositados foi medida por espectrofotometria UV-Vis. O caráter hidrofílico dos filmes finos foi comprovado por meio de medidas do ângulo de contato com água. Os filmes obtidos por ambas as técnicas apresentaram boa capacidade autolimpante devido ao efeito da hidrofilicidade fotoinduzida sob radiação UV.

Previous laboratory and field experimentation has demonstrated the effect of several variables on drilling rate.1-5 These results have been incorporated into optimization theories6-" for the purpose of reducing drilling cost. Minimum-cost drilling theories rely on a combination of historical data and empirical prediction techniques for selecting optimum bit weight and rotary speed. Past solutions have required extensive use of computing equipment because of both the complexity of the mathematical formulations and the large number of parameters involved. Field attempts to apply these computed results have frequently failed because of the uncertainty of input data requirements. Humble has developed an on-site computer system to control bit weight and rotary speed and thereby implement the concepts of minimum-cost drilling. This system can (1) perform short interval drilling rate tests for formation evaluation, (2) use the results of these tests as input information to solve minimum-cost drilling formulas, and (3) control bit weight and rotary speed in accordance with these computed solutions. The purpose of this paper is to describe the computer control system and present results of initial field testing. Theoretical Considerations Minimum-cost drilling (MCD) requires a quantitative evaluation of the variables involved. Several forms of a basic mathematical model have been sug-gested.'?,' "he relationships reported here form the basis for the solution programmed in this work. Four equations are used, expressing drilling rate, bit bearing wear, bit tooth wear, and cost. A solution for minimum-cost drilling assuming constant bit weight and rotary speed over the entire bit life has been programmed for use in computing MCD schedules. This solution is subject to certain limiting assumptions such as those discussed by Graham et a1.I2: 1. Drilling cost is the summation of bit cost, rotating cost, connection cost and hoisting cost. 2. Diamond bits are excluded. 3. Bit life is limited by either bearing failure or tooth wear, or by a combination of operational factors that make it cheaper to pull an incompletely consumed bit. 4. Circulating hydraulics are adequate and do not limit drilling rate. 5. Bit weight considerations exclude hole deviation. 6. Drilling rate is a function of only bit weight, rotary speed, and degree of tooth dullness; that is, the effects of pressure, lithology, fluid properties hydraulics and drill string dynamics are ignored. Recientemente Southern Perú desarrolló un nuevo proyecto donde se modernizaba la planta de Fundicion y se reemplazaba el convencional horno reverbero por la tecnología del ISASMELT, capturando más del 92% de los gases generados durante el proceso de fusión de los concentrados de cobre. En ese sentido, el presente texto describo los efectos de la modernización de la Fundición sobre la calidad anódica. Antes de la modernización de la Fundición, los ánodos fueron producidos en la planta de ánodos ubicada en la Refinería de Cobre de Ilo. Ahora los ánodos son producidos directamente en la Fundición y como resultado, la composición química de los ánodos ha cambiado, principalmente en el contenido de bismuto, antimonio, plomo y zinc, siendo diferentes a los parámetros de diseño original de la Refinería. Asimismo, este factor impulsó a revisar el proceso de remoción de impurezas y los parámetros de la refinación electrolítica en la Refinería para evitar la contaminación del cobre refinado, logrando mantener la continuidad de la producción de cátodos de cobre de alta calidad superando los estándares interna-cionales de la norma ASTM-B115.

When Centaur Mining and Exploration produced nickel metal fromlaterite ore at its Cawse nickel project in January 1999, a new era in the nickel industry was heralded in. One of three new laterite projects commissioned that year, new technology and a unique process design has been combined at Cawse to launch what will be amongst the worldÆs cheapest nickel production. However, the road to success has proven to be long and challenging. The objective of this research was to evaluate the technical and economic constraints on the extraction and utilization of anthracite coal and to determine the research and development needed in order to make anthracite coal more fully utilized as a premium energy resource. In the report the contractor examines in detail the anthracite industry both past and present and evaluates market possibilities. Anthracite reserves and resources are analyzed and tabulated, and the problem of pumping and drainage from the flooded anthracite fields is covered. Current technology is considered in detail with a discussion of production techniques with potential for improvement. The contractor concludes the report with a summary of constraints on the anthracite industry and the contractor's recommendations for effecting a revitalization of that industry. An estimated production of 17 million tons annually by 1990 can be anticipated if adequate planning, research, and development to overcome present constraints are initiated in the near future.

The economic interest of oceanic ferromanganese crusts and nodules is determined by high grades of major, rare and earth rare elements in these types of marine minerals [1]. Modern oceanic ferromanganese deposits have a global distribution with the largest fields in the Pacific Ocean. The Arctic Ocean still remains a poorly explored region. The first ferromanganese deposits from the deep part of the Arctic Ocean were recovered almost at the same time in 2012 both in US and Russian cruises to the Chukchi Borderland (1) and Mendeleev Ridge (2). Preliminary results of mineral deposits from the first area were reported at UMI-2012 by James Hein et al. [2]. We present here the data of ferromanganese deposits from the Mendeleev Ridge.

The tensile properties of DGEBA/TETA epoxy matrix composites reinforced with different amounts of curaua fibers were evaluated. Tensile specimens with up to 35% in volume of long, continuous and aligned curaua fibers were room temperature tested in an Instron machine. The fracture was analyzed by SEM. The results showed significant changes in the mechanical properties with the amount of curaua fibers. This was compared to other bend-tested composites with distinct matrices. The fracture analysis revealed a weak fiber/matrix interface, which could be responsible for the comparatively low performance of some properties.

The application of statistical analysis software programs has proven useful for the investigation of rockfall runout distance along a designed slope. Rockfall modeling programs are continually being upgraded with more sophisticated analysis tools, such as the use of the rigid body versus lump mass models. Engineers at mine sites utilizing the software may have varied experience related to these models, their associated input parameters, and how to interpret the generated results. To address this concern, researchers at the Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) of the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigated the influence of slope height, slope angle, slope material, and rock size for both rigid body and lump mass models in a 2-D statistical analysis program. Based on a literature search and industry input, specific ranges common to that of an open pit mining environment were chosen for each of the input parameters to determine 90% rock runout distance as well as their sensitivity to change. Data collected from this numerical analysis and simulation will be compared to empirical rockfall data gathered through the duration of the Highwall Safety project conducted by NIOSH from 2022–2026.

Rio Tinto Coal Australia (RTCA) developed the Meandu Mine in Queensland, Australia in 1983 to supply thermal coal to the adjacent and newly constructed Tarong Power Station (TPS). In designing the mine, RTCA selected Meandu?s best economic reserves for a 27-year life based on station owner Tarong Energy Corp.?s (TECs) estimated life for TPS. That 27-year plan changed dramatically in the early 2000s when TEC approved life extensions to TPS?s four existing units plus construction of a fifth unit. After reviewing Meandu?s remaining reserves, RTCA decided the nearby Kunioon reserve offered the more economic option for maintaining deliveries beyond 2010. Those plans changed again in 2007 when TEC chose to purchase the Meandu Mine and nearby reserves. TEC then selected Thiess Pty Ltd. (Thiess) to continue operating Meandu until the new mine at Kunioon could be developed. After assuming operation of the mine in 2008, Thiess began a review of Meandu?s remaining reserves and found considerable coal available with economic potential. Working jointly with TEC, Thiess performed several analyses on Meandu and subsequently the Kunioon coal reserves. The results changed TEC?s decision from expediting Kunioon?s construction to instead continuing Meandu?s operation for up to 15 additional years.
