Bulk materials handling systems are extensively used in the mining and minerals industry, where a fairly high incidence of structural failure is experienced, notwithstanding design compliance with appropriate standards. A number of case studies are explored to demonstrate how insufficient controls or protection systems have contributed to structural failures on mobile bulk handling equipment. The importance of design integration across engineering disciplines is highlighted. The revision of ISO 5049-1 (1994) is proposed to provide specific rules and guidelines pertaining to machine protection systems. It is further recommended that the structural design engineer of the original equipment manufacturer(OEM) fulfils a more prominent role during the final acceptance and handover of mobile bulk handling equipment, with specific reference to protection systems.

Este trabalho apresenta o sistema de Nível 2 recentemente implementado nos Altos Fornos da TKCSA cujos principais objetivos foram: substituir o sistema antigo com problemas de instabilidade e falta de flexibilidade; auxiliar Operação e especialistas da Unidade Técnica fornecendo informações elaboradas a partir de dados obtidos nos demais sistemas (Nível 1 e Laboratório); enviar set-point ao Nível 1; enviar dados de consumo e produção ao sistema MES; etc. Com a implementação foi possível reduzir o tempo gasto pelos especialistas nas atividades de compilação de dados em planilhas, padronizar a forma de tratamento dos dados, bem como, elevar a confiabilidade das informações pela eliminação de erro de digitação. O sistema tem operado com elevada estabilidade e disponibilidade, atendendo perfeitamente o que foi proposto, de modo que a TKCSA planeja estender para demais plantas da área de Redução.

O trabalho estudou a formação, a interação com a escória e a solidificação de inclusões geradas durante o processamento de aços dual-phase com alto teor de silício (>1%). A composição destes aços, se não bem controlada, pode gerar inclusões sólidas de sílica pura durante o lingotamento contínuo. Para o estudo, foram feitas simulações termodinâmicas com o software computacional FactSage 6.4. As simulações mostraram que os fatores mais importantes para a composição inicial das inclusões é a relação %Mn/%Si e o teor de alumínio dissolvido no aço. Ao interagir com a escória, a tendência é que as inclusões se aproximem da sua composição ao longo do tempo. Durante a solidificação, a maioria das inclusões apresentou fases deformáveis e de baixo ponto de fusão, com exceção das inclusões sem CaO e da inclusão com 25% de Al2O3 e teor intermediário de CaO, que apresentaram as fases tridimita, coríndon e gehlenita de alto ponto de fusão e não-deformáveis.

"The Highway 53 relocation project in Virginia, Minnesota, involves construction of a very tall bridge across a currently inactive iron ore mine pit. The inactive pit is partially flooded and serves as the community’s drinking water source. The 1,132-ft long new bridge is a three-span, plate girder structure. Two intermediate, approximately 200-ft tall piers are located within the pit.The foundations for the two piers consist of groups of 30-in diameter piles which, despite the contradiction in terms, are essentially very large micropiles. Extremely challenging and highly variable subsurface conditions exist at the site, ranging from uncontrolled iron ore mine waste fill to some of the hardest rock on earth that can also be highly fractured and abrasive. Despite the conditions, large diameter (30-in) micropile foundations up to 175 ft deep were successfully installed using down-the-hole hammer methods and full-length permanent casing under an extremely aggressive construction schedule.Full-scale foundation load testing using the Statnamic rapid loading method was also conducted in support of the design and construction but under a separate pre-design phase contract. This paper describes the unique aspects of this foundation project, including design, construction, and load testing of the large micropiles.INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDIn 1960, a segment of Trunk Highway 53 (TH-53) in Virginia, Minnesota, was built on land owned by iron ore mining interests. As part of the roadway easement agreement, Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) was to be given notice three years prior to termination of the easement. In 2010, MnDOT received notice that the mining interests wished to access the ore. Through negotiations in 2010, MnDOT and the mining interests agreed to a 2017 date for abandoning the existing section of roadway. During this period, MnDOT needed to procure project funding, satisfy environmental permitting requirements, and acquire new right-of-way to permanently reroute TH-53 and keep it open to traffic. This was no easy task due to the existing mine pits surrounding the area.The E-2 alignment option shown in Fig. 1 was ultimately selected for the rerouted highway in 2014. The new highway segment includes a three-span bridge across the currently inactive Rouchleau Mine Pit. The inactive pit is partially flooded and serves as Virginia’s drinking water source. The 1,132- ft long new bridge is a three-span, plate girder bridge. Two intermediate approximately 200-ft tall piers are located within the pit. Fig. 2 is a conceptual rendering of the bridge."

A field representative modeling of the gob behavior is critical for the understanding of the associated mechanics of strata behavior in longwall workings. The findings of theoretical models and laboratory tests on the simulated gob material have shown the strain hardening behavior of the gob material. The double-yield material model, which is a built-in constitutive model in FLAC3D, has significant potential to simulate the gob compaction process as it represents materials which undergo irreversible compaction in addition to shear yielding. Apart from this, several researchers have attempted using modified elastic model or applied nodal force in reaction to the strain in the gob area as per the well-known theoretical relations to meet this requirement. Although these models can simulate the mechanical response of the gob for subcritical and critical extraction widths, they do not apply to supercritical extraction width as the gob stress may exceed the in situ stress level in such cases. For overcoming these limitations, a standard approach has been developed and validated in this paper, which can be used for simulating the gob behavior in supercritical longwall workings as well. The complete study is divided into two stages wherein the laboratory scale compression test on the simulated gob material has been numerically replicated to develop preliminary confidence followed by a parametric study of the double-yield constitutive parameters for a rational estimation of their values in different conditions. The calibrated model has been used for verifying its results by plane strain modeling of two different longwall workings, using well-established empirical and analytical findings and field observations. The approach suggested in this study can be used for the efficient modeling of the gob behavior of longwall panels under varying geo-mining conditions without compromising the accuracy of the numerical model. The meticulously validated model can be helpful in rational estimation of stress redistributions around the gob area apart from load transfer on the barrier pillar.

Falconbridge Ltd Raglan Mine has been in production since 1998 and has produced annually some 900 000T of ore grading 3.1% nickel, 0.9% copper and 0.06% cobalt. The mine is located in Nunavik, Northern Quebec. The current mine life is estimated at approximately 20 years. Reserves are composed of numerous small ore bodies situated across a 65 km strike length. Planning the extraction of the ten small mineralized zones represents a great challenge to optimize. The overall objective is to maximize the company?s return on net assets. Actual planning uses computerized technology tools like Automod and Mine2-4D, and a conventional discounted cash flow method (DCF) of calculating net present value (NPV). The complex setting of Raglan could benefit from advance valuation techniques such as the real options method (RO). This paper will present the characteristics if the mines that make it a good candidate to use RO to gain further insight.

A commonplace, sometimes overlooked or taken for granted, article of everyday existence is the tin can. Produced from thin gauge low carbon steel, and commonly coated with a mere 60 millionths of an inch of pure tin, the product is however strong and corrosion resistant. Tin-plate serves a myriad of purposes-the most important being to meet the requirements of the canning industry. Australia's newest steel product, tin-plate, was first produced on a commercial scale during the early part of August, 1957. The commissioning of the Hot Dip Tinning Plant (Fig. 1) of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. at Port Kembla, marked the culmination of a proposal dating back to 1939, the advent of World War II having caused its deferment to the present time.Cornish tin is known to have been exported as early as 300 B.C. to Syria and tinned vessels existed even in the year A.D. 23. The tin coating of plate could be described as an ancient art, believed to have had its origin in Bohemia in the thirteenth century. During the next 450 years, the process spread through Saxony to Pontypool in Monmouthshire, but it was a further half century before any measure of success was obtained.Perhaps the two greatest milestones in tin-plate manufacture were the rolling of iron plates first carried out in 1728, thereby outmoding the hammer formed sheet, and more recently, the development of the electro-deposition process. "FOUR PAPERS ON CEMENTED BACKFILL were given at the Annual General Meeting of The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1970:Weaver, W. A corrosão é um fenômeno que está intimamente ligado à integridade dos metais e de suas ligas. Esta ocorre de diversas formas, uma das principais é a corrosão localizada na forma de pites, objeto de análise desse estudo, que visa estabelecer um comparativo entre as curvas de polarização cíclica de algumas ligas ferrosas e não ferrosas, ensaiadas em solução de NaCl 0,6 M, mostrando a agressividade que a solução exerce sob cada uma das ligas. Os materiais analisados nesse estudo foram os aços inoxidáveis AISI 304, AISI 444, super duplex ASTM A890/A890 M Grau 6A, o aço carbono AISI 1030, o alumínio comercialmente puro, o cobre eletrolítico e a liga zircaloy- 4. Inicialmente foram medidos os potenciais de corrosão (Ec) de cada liga através do monitoramento do potencial de circuito aberto. Foram realizados os ensaios de polarização potenciodinâmica cíclica em cada liga, comparando o aspecto superficial antes e depois do ensaio através de micrografias óticas, possibilitando que fossem observadas as diferenças entre cada material quanto à resistência à corrosão por pites. Observou-se que algumas ligas não apresentam passivação como o caso do alumínio comercialmente puro, e outras apresentaram regiões passivas e histereses bem definidas, ficando evidente que, dentre as ligas analisadas, o aço inoxidável super duplex ASTM A890/A890 M Grau 6A apresentou os melhores resultados frente aos efeitos agressivos dos íons Cl- presentes na solução, sendo o menos suscetível à corrosão por pites.

THE most common difficulty faced by an engineer or mine operator when opening a new property in a new field is the lack of roads and of cheap transportation. This one item often swings the balance of success or failure in starting a project. In Alaska, as elsewhere, such problems are more or less serious. In the boom days around the Valdez district, as well as in other parts of this territory, freighting was accom¬plished by dog teams or horses, or even by men that were willing to put their shoulders into harness, because there were virtually no roads. More important, there was only one time when supplies could be transported, and that was when there was suffi¬cient snow on the ground following a heavy wind. As placas de circuito impresso (PCI) são materiais heterogêneos e sua composição pode variar em função do ano de fabricação, tecnologia empregada, propósito de utilização, legislações vigentes e país de origem, entre outros. Essas características interferem diretamente no valor econômico agregado a estes resíduos, pois dependem da composição dos mesmos, de tal maneira que as empresas recicladoras tomam como base essas informações no momento da aquisição da sucata. Assim, a classificação e caracterização de PCIs é de suma importância para o mercado de reciclagem de resíduos eletroeletrônicos. A fim de alcançar este objetivo foi realizada cominuição em moinho de facas utilizando grelhas com abertura de 9, 6 e 3mm. A etapa de caracterização incluiu ensaios de digestão em água régia, perda ao fogo, análises química quantitativa por ICP-OES e MEV/EDS. Verificou-se que o lote de PCI estudado possui 39,5% de material cerâmico, 34,5% polimérico e 26 % metálico. A porcentagem em massa de cobre na placa é de 14,28%, de ferro 3,73%, de ouro 0,012% e de estanho 1,29%. O lote não é lead free e é multilayer com quatro camadas de cobre.

Chalcopyrite concentrate was combusted in oxygen-nitrogen atmospheres, the composition of which ranged from 1-100 per cent oxygen. Factors studied included particle size, experimental temperature and oxygen concentration. The study was assisted by chemical and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and temperature measurements of single particles. Size reduction occurring after melting was found to have a major effect on the overall reaction time. Thus time to attain ignition was largely determined by the original particle size, whereas combustion time was independent of this factor. For particles larger than 40 I'm in air the time to attain ignition predominated. The maximum temperatures measured for single particles were the result of pyrite present in the concentrate. Chalcopyrite did not attain thesame temperatures. Vaporization, either as CU(g) or CuO(g) lImited the temperature. Maximum temperatures measured for single particles of pyrite ranged from 1610°C in 14 per cent oxygen to 2360°C in 100 per cent oxygen (both at 700°C). Measured temperatures were compared with those calculated from a diffusion-based model.

Large reserves of feldspar ore exist in the Aegean region of Turkey. The main colored impurities in these ores are iron- and titanium-bearing minerals such as anatase, rutile, sphene and ilmenite. In this study, a potassium feldspar ore containing mainly quartz and coloring impurities was subjected to beneficiation tests involving magnetic separation and flotation, which were applied either separately or in combination. Bench-scale flotation experiments using cationic collectors G-TAP and Flotigam V-4343 and using HF and H2SO4 as modifiers were employed to separate feldspar from quartz and to remove part of the titanium impurities. The best results were achieved with a combination of high-intensity wet magnetic separation and flotation. A feldspar concentrate containing 16.28% Al2O3, 10.75% K2O, 2.84% Na2O, 69.97% SiO2 and 0.16% Fe2O3 was produced. A quartz concentrate containing 2.30% Al2O3, 0.48% K2O, 0.42% Na2O, 0.07% Fe2O3 and 96.20% SiO2 was also obtained

"Most of the minerals employed in Canadian refractory production are imported; in fact, most of the refractories consumed in Canada are imported. Whereas this situation is partly due to a definite shortage of suitable raw materials, e.g., fire clays, it is possible that the potential of certain mineral deposits which could be usefully exploited has not been recognized. There are exceptions, notably magnesite and dolomite, from which refractories are produced in Canada.In many cases, known mineral deposits are located either in inaccessible areas or in areas where transportation would be a major economic factor. This paper lists some minerals and their respective known deposits which could be employed in the production of refractories, irrespective of economics."

To extend the life of the Merchants Railroad Bridge crossing the Mississippi River in St. Louis, MO, the owner implemented a rehabilitation and reconstruction project. The Merchants Bridge provides a key link in the transcontinental railroad system. The bridge is of local importance to the Terminal Railroad Association ? providing a link between St Louis and a rail switching yard in Venice, IL. The intent of the bridge rehabilitation is to keep the Merchants Bridge in service, even though the bridge was originally constructed in the 1890?s. The project involved replacing the East and West approach deck truss spans with new deck girder spans. The rehabilitation program required construction of new concrete piers to support the new spans. In order to reduce the track down time to two, ten day single track shutdowns, the specifications required that all foundation and substructure work be completed while leaving the existing spans in place. The preliminary bridge design specified rock-socketed drilled shaft foundations. Drilled shafts proved to be challenging due to working from beneath the existing bridge, a high water table, utilities, a flood wall, and existing rail way lines. The micropile alternative was technically appropriate given the access limitations, shortened the foundation rehabilitation schedule by several weeks, and realized a significant cost savings to the Owner.

AISI 4130 steel is a medium carbon Cr-Mo steel used in automotive, aeronautic and other general-purpose industries. In this study, 4130 steel fatigue specimens were carburized at 927oC to enhance the carbon content in the steel, raising it from approximately 0.30% (non-carburized) to 0.90% (carburized, oil quenched and tempered). Rotating bending fatigue tests were performed on the R. R. Moore Rotating Beam Fatigue Testing System, in order to determine the high cycle fatigue (HCF) life of 4130 steel and plot the corresponding S-N diagrams. A comparison of the results of carburized and non-carburized specimens shows that carburizing of steel: a) increases the surface hardness and b) improves the fatigue strength of the steel by at least two orders of magnitude.

ANY analysis of the aluminum situation, particularly of the factors involved in the current shortage of the metal, must consider the rapid march of events since the Munich fiasco of September 1938. At the end of 1938, the sole domestic producer of aluminum had more than a year's supply of metal on hand, having added 50,500 tons of output to stocks during the year. Not until war had been declared between the United Kingdom and Germany in September 1939 did the United States begin to make serious preparations for defense and a limited national emergency was proclaimed. Congress reflecting popular opinion, was not disposed to spend huge sums for armaments in 1939, and although 31,413 tons of aluminum was withdrawn from stocks. 107,500 tons was still on hand at the end of the year. When the President initiated a 50,000-airplane program in May 1940 the country was astounded, as previous Congressional authorizations of approximately 6000 planes for the Army by July 1911 and 3000 for the Navy by 1914 had been considered adequate.

Increased employment and a lower accident-frequency rate were the outstanding features of the metal- and nonmetal-mining4 industries of the United States in 1939 compared with 1933, according to reports furnished by individual mining companies to the Bureau of Vines, United States Department of the Interior. Except for 1937, the reports for 1939 showed gains both in number of employees and number of mar -hours worked over all years since 1929. The accident-frequency rate per million man-hours of exposure to mining hazards was lower than in any year since 1925. Reports for 1939 revealed a total of 111,909 men employed in and about mines, an increase of inure than 8 percent over 1931 The total volume of labor performed at all mires was slightly more than 299 million plan-hours, an increase of mare than 10 percent over 1938. As these gains suggest, the average employee had a longer period of work in 1939, the increase amounting to r workdays per employee.
