WISH to call the attention of the Institute to a curious subject, brought to my notice last summer by Mr. Begger, the accomplished metallurgist of the smelting-works of the Boston and Colorado Company at Black Hawk, near Central City, Colorado. At these works, the richest auriferous sulphhrets of Colorado (particularly copper pyrites) are smelted in reverberatories, together with roasted tailings (iron pyrites), and the gold and silver are concentrated into a new, artificial sulphide, or copper matte, containing $1500 and upwards of the precious metals per ton, and this is shipped to Swansea. I will say in passing, that this shipment of an unrefined product, like the similar shipments from Utah and Nevada to San Francisco, Chi¬cago, St. Louis, Newark, New York, and Europe, of crude argentiferous lead or "base bullion," is not a sign of incomplete metallurgy here, but has a sound business reason. The separation of the precious metals in the West would be more expensive, to begin with ; and then it would necessitate the movement of these metals by express, at high rates and risk, to commercial centres or coining mints, while the base metals having no home market, must be shipped and sold at little or no profit. At present, the gold and silver, safely packed, as it were, in the base metals, are transported with safety as ordinary freight; and the base metals probably more than pay cost of shipment and separation. Underground longwall mining of coal causes large scale disturbance of the surrounding rock mass. The disturbance can increase the rock mass permeability through a reduction on the stress as well as formation of new fractures in the rock. Methane gas contained in the disturbed rock mass can migrate towards the low pressure mine workings and present an explosion hazard. This paper describes the application of a finite difference program to develop a geomechanical model that predicts permeability changes within the rock mass. The calculated permeabilities are used as input to a reservoir simulator that models methane desorption from the coal matrix, methane release from the rock layers and flow towards the mine excavations. The model also considers the basic characteristics of the mine ventilation network. The geomechanical model uses empirical relationships between fracture permeability and stress to calculate permeability changes around a longwall face. The extent of rock failure is determined using a strain softening model that considers both rock matrix and bedding plane failure. The cave rock (gob) is modeled as a compressible, granulated material. The calculated horizontal and vertical permeabilities around the longwall face are averaged and used as one of the inputs to the reservoir model. The reservoir model was developed and calibrated against records of methane flow at a study mine in southwestern Pennsylvania. Good correlation between actual gas production and model outputs has been achieved. The modeling approach provides a basis for estimating methane inflow and optimizing control measures.

[As a results of work conducted during the past three years, the Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Washington at Seattle, Washington, has developed a process for the production of sponge iron. Commercial operation of this process in a 3 to 4-ton scale has been so satisfactory that its use on a large scale (20 to 100 tons per day) can be safely considered. Description of Process. The process consists in passing a mixture of iron ore and coal through a rotating kiln heated at one end to a temperature sufficient to convert iron oxide to metallic iron, discharging, cooling, and separating the sponge iron from the residual coke and silicious material on a magnetic separator. Both the coal and the ore should be crushed to peso as 6-meth scream, tans producing particles finer then 1/12 of an inch. Seventy-five parts of coal or other carbonaceous material arc charged with every 100 parts of ore), This large amount of coal is required in order to supply sufficient carbon to maintain a strongly reducing atmosphere in the charge, but may be reduced to about 65 parts per 100 parts of ore by recovering and using tae carbon that remains in the discharge product. Large-scale operation and refinements in furnace design should lower this ratio to perhaps 56 or 60 parts of coal to 100 parts of ore.]

An OCS Expert control system was implemented by Svedala Cisa at the Minera Maricunga Refugio Crush-Leach Operation near Copiapo, Chile. The purpose of the Expert system was to maximize production through the primary and secondary crushing circuits and help balance crusher usage between each stage to maximize total plant production. Interesting aspects of the control strategies are discussed. Benefits of the control were verified through a randomized On/Off test program. Tonnage increases ranged from 5% to approximately 20% at good confidence intervals. Benefits analysis results are discussed. The crushing plant at Refugio is very remote and is located at approximately 15,500 ft. This poses many challenges. The effect of altitude and remote location on plant operation are discussed.

The West's Shell Pile has been used on sites with very soft ground conditions for over 60 years. Fibre reinforced precast concrete shells 900mm long are threadled onto an internal mandrel which can be extended according to the depth driven to attain the load bearing resistance. On completion of driving the mandrel is removed leaving the precast shells to form a permanent lining to the cast insitu concrete core. To give resistance to high contamination, a tar based epoxy coat is sprayed on the outside of the shells or a flexible PVC liner is installed inside the shells to protect the core. Fundamental to the resistance to contamination is the quality of the precast fibre reinforced concrete shell, the mix design and method of manufacture. A series of detailed laboratory experiments were carried out using samples immersed in concentrated acid and sulphate solution. The long term effects of exposure to contamination is recorded in the case studies of existing piles at two gasworks sites.

"The valuation of mineral properties in the U.S. is only partially regulated. The regulations which have jurisdiction or impact appear to have such mainly as a consequence of unintended fallout, since the regulations were designed for other purposes. Court case history can also be important. The combined results are a mixture of bad and good, with important lessons to be learned.Since 1981, the Securities and Exchange Commission has prohibited U.S. listed companies from reporting quantitative estimates of mineralization and the value of mineralization, other than proven and probable reserves. This results in the minerals appraiser (valuator) working with a shortage of data in his everyday work, both on the subject property and in sales analysis.Between 1989 and 1995, all 50 states and essentially all Federal agencies adopted the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) for real property appraisals (valuations). The major national appraisal societies also require their members to abide by USPAP. A significant portion of minerals appraisals must now follow these standards. This paper will discuss the content of USPAP. It provides a very good framework for the valuation of a minerals property or a mine, both as real property and as a business. However, the credentialing standards for real property appraisers are now prohibitive for minerals appraisers."

Although bismuth mineralization is spread widely through the Lachlan Fold Belt in New South Wales, broad grouping of the various deposits can be effected on the basis of geographical and geological (age and type of associated rocks) affinities. As a result, significant concentrations of bismuth can be recognized in the Mid-Western granites, Cobar-type ore, the Yass Silurian acid volcanic belt, and the Albury, Bega, Braidwoodand Bathurst districts.In these deposits bismuth generally occurs in minor amounts associated with molybdenite, wolframite, scheelite, cassiterite, chalcopyrite, galena, magnetite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and native gold. From this group of minerals three broadly defined associations can be recognized.I. Bi-Sn-W-Mo2. Bi-Au( -Te)3. Bi-Pb-Cu(-Au)There may be some interchangeability of these metals, as instanced by occasional Bi-Cu-W-Mo mirleralization, but pyrite and/ or arsenopyrite are usually prominent in all associations.The first two of these associations occur mainly in the form of narrow quartz veins rarely averaging more than O· 3 per cent Bi, although there is often a marked enrichment in ferruginous material in the oxidized zone.Most of these veins occur within or adjacent to granitic rocks of varying ages (principally Silurian or Devonian), although Bi-Au mineralization tends to be related to more basic igneous activity than the Bi-Sn-W-Mo association.The latter is also occasionally developed in pipes, usually coarse-grained and richer in bismuth (as at Whipstick, the principal mine in New South Wales with a production of 343 tonnes of the metal), or in lower grade, but probably larger tonnage skarn deposits. The bismuth-base metal association occurs mainly in Silurian acid volcanic sequences and may also form low grade but large tonnage deposits, such as is possibly developed at Cobar.

The efficiency by which an applied load is transmitted through the composite structure depends on the strength of the interface between the matrix and the second phase. In fiber reinforced composites, the interfacial shear stress plays a major role in the composite capacity to support the applied load. This interfacial stress can be obtained by means of pullout tests using the fiber embedded to a certain length in a socket of the matrix material. In the present work, pullout tests were performed to evaluate the interfacial shear stress of ramie, a relatively strong natural fiber, reinforcing polyester matrix composites. The general result permitted to calculate a critical length for the ramie fiber embedded in polyester resin. From this critical length, the value of the interfacial shear stress was calculated. An interpretation of this result together with SEM observation displayed a relatively weak bond between the ramie fiber and the polyester matrix.

The Newcrest Mining Limited Cadia East Panel Cave mines near Orange, New South Wales, Australia commenced production 1200 m below the surface in May 2014. Understanding the mine-wide impact caving had on excavation stability was a primary objective to ensure a safe working environment as production ramped up in the Panel Cave 1 operation and establishment activities were implemented in Panel Cave 2. The impact of cave interaction between Panel Cave 1 and Panel Cave 2 and establishing monitoring systems to assist mine planning and production as both caves joined is explained in this paper. Monitoring tools such as a microseismic system, open holes, HI-cells, extensometers, fibre optic sensing, cave markers, closure monitoring, underground observations and damage mapping were used to characterise the performance and position of the cave back. The data and observations collected were compared to predictions from numerical and empirical methods and used to calibrate the numerical models for forward prediction and to develop site empirical design tools. The copper smelting gas / slag / matte / metal / solids system with the Cu-Fe-Ca-Si-O-S major elements has been a long-term focus of the present overall research program using integrated experimental and modelling approach for the phase equilibria characterisation and development of a thermodynamic database. A systematic investigation of phase equilibria of slag systems in equilibrium with Cu metal is providing information for systems where copper coexists in slag with lead, zinc, and aluminium oxides as major components. Experimental studies involve high-temperature equilibration of synthetic samples; rapid quenching; and measurement of the compositions of equilibrium phases using electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA). Particularly important feature of the present study a wide range of temperatures (660-1670°C) being characterised that reveals major inconsistencies in the existing thermodynamic description of the multicomponent system, and allows to establish the thermodynamic properties from phase equilibria in a reliable way. FactSage-based thermodynamic modelling is integrated with experimental research. Initial thermodynamic assessments are used to identify priorities for experiments, planned to provide specific data for thermodynamic optimisation. Significant improvement in the accuracy of the phase equilibria description is achieved, in particular in the PbO-Cu2O-SiO2, ZnO-Cu2O-SiO2, and Cu2O-CaO- Al2O3 systems in equilibrium with metallic Cu. INTRODUCTION Slags high in lead and copper are generated in primary metal production in the smelting of lead sulfide concentrates and in pyrometallurgical metal recycling systems. The compositions of these slags are varied due to increased fraction of recycled materials in the feed as well as introduction of previously unused chemical elements to modern technology. Therefore, their processing becomes chemically more complex; in that way they contain a large number of different metals. These slags form complex non-ideal solutions (with possible formation of several immiscible slags) that can coexist with stoichiometric solids, solid solutions, mattes and molten metal depending on the bulk composition and process conditions. Predicting the outcomes of smelting and refining processes is becoming increasingly difficult. To assist in the optimisation of these metallurgical processing operations, a comprehensive research program is underway to develop accurate thermodynamic databases for these non-ferrous process systems.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines report is to provide mining industry personnel and regulatory authorities with a subsidence-reference list and annotated bibliography that will aid them in locating subsidence information and in developing their own subsidence information sources. Over 700 references are listed in the Bureau's subsidence information center bibliography; approximately 600 of these references were obtained for assessment. Of these 600 references, 167 were selected to be rated, categorized, and annotated. All literature referenced in this report was published prior to 1984. Table 1 is a cross - referenced index that classifies and rates selected references with respect to specific keywords. References are rated not on quality of content but rather on applicability to given subject areas. Appendix A is an annotated bibliography of the references listed in table 1 and provides further information of each article to aid the user in selecting articles for specific areas of subsidence technology. Appendix B is a copy of the subsidence information center bibliography.

Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a soldabilidade a pontos entre os aços 22MnB5 e Dual Phase da classe de 800 MPa de limite de resistência (DP800), ambos com 1,8 mm de espessura. A intenção foi determinar os parâmetros adequados de soldagem para esse tipo de junta soldada, que vem sendo progressivamente utilizada na estrutura de veículos automotores, em virtude do uso crescente de peças fabricadas a partir do aço 22MnB5, submetido ao processo de estampagem a quente (hot stamping). Foram avaliadas as propriedades mecânicas através de ensaios estáticos de cisalhamento e de tração cruzada, em juntas soldadas produzidas a partir da variação do tempo de soldagem e da força aplicada pelos eletrodos. Percebeu-se que as juntas confeccionadas com o tempo de soldagem com múltiplos pulsos (9/2/9/2/9 ciclos) e a força de 5,0 kN obtiveram os melhores resultados em cisalhamento. Em contrapartida, os corpos de prova produzidos com a força de 6,5 kN atingiram os maiores valores em tração cruzada. Independentemente dos parâmetros aplicados, todas as condições avaliadas permitiram alcançar o valor mínimo de carga de ruptura necessária para garantir a qualidade de uma junta soldada a ponto entre os aços avaliados.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Shoshonite suite (absarokite-shoshonite-banakite) and adakite-hosted epithermal Au deposits are a feature of circum-Pacific magmatism. Fijian examples include Tavua (Emperor) and Tuvatu on Viti Levu. New discoveries of shoshonite suite and adakite-hosted epithermal Au mineralisation have been made in the southern Yasawa Islands and in central-northern and central-western Viti Levu. The Fijian shoshonites define four NE–SW trending suites. The oldest is the northern 7.9–5.0 Ma Yasawa suite, followed by the 4.7–3.5 Ma Sabeto–Tavua–Rakiraki suite in northern Viti Levu, the 4.7–4.2 Ma Yanuca–Vatulele suite approximately 20 km south of Viti Levu and the 3.4 Ma Astrolabe suite approximately 75 km further south. Shoshonite suite lithologies with 3.8–3.0 Ma ages also occur in the Lomaiviti islands between Vatu-Cake and Moala, to the east of Viti Levu, defining a trend oblique to the NE–SW shoshonite belts. Seatura, a 3.3–2.8 Ma ocean island basalt (OIB) volcano, sits at the northern end of the Lomaiviti trend shoshonites. Trace element/isotopic chemistries indicate that shoshonite arc magma genesis involved the melting of a hydrated supra-subduction zone mantle wedge and also a lower mantle-derived plume (OIB) component. The upwelling plume provided heat for melting and possibly Au enrichment. Accessing the melt generation zone associated with the plume required a slab conduit or window. Such slab windows form by tearing during subduction or occur at slab edges. Adakites form by plume-induced slab melting. The four NE–SW Fijian shoshonite suites are interpreted to occur in back-arc extensional zones above a slab window (tear) that migrated southward during rollback of the New Hebrides–Vanuatu subduction zone. The plume (Seatura OIB) that is interpreted to have caused mantle wedge melting and formation of the Lomaviti trend shoshonites was focused along the interface between the north-dipping Vanuatu–New Hebrides subduction zone and the west-dipping Tonga subduction zone, which we have seismically imaged at approximately 400 km depth. Host-rock û wallrock major and trace element geochemistry associated with epithermal gold mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield of New Zealand is poorly documented, even though rock geochemistry is a recognised tool in exploration. Such responses assist in recognition of the regional scale imprint of fossil hydrothermal activity, and indicate targets for detailed evaluation within these alteration zones.   Recent investigation of gold deposits in the Waihi (Gladstone), Golden Cross (Empire), Thames (Waiotahi) and Coromandel (Tokatea) areas indicate enrichments of Au, As and Sb in the andesitic wallrocks hosting mineralisation. Of the other elements examined, Si, K and Rb are enriched, and Na, Ca, and Sr are depleted at all deposits. These trends are best developed in the vicinity of veining. In deposits with clay alteration dominating (Waiotahi and Tokatea) there is also depletion of Mg, Mn, Zn and Cu. Ba and Cr are variably enriched or depleted within different styles of alteration. Base-metal enrichment in the wallrocks is not a feature of Hauraki deposits.

Ball Clay Four companies ? H.C. Spinks Clay (owned by Lhoist Group), Kentucky-Tennessee Clay (owned by Imerys Group), Old Hickory Clay, and Unimin Corp. ? mined ball clay in four states in 2008. Production, on the basis of preliminary data, was 964 kt (1.1 millon st) with an estimated value of $45.3 million. That was a 10- percent decrease in tonnage from 1.07 Mt (1.2 mil-lion st) with a value of $49.2 million that was produced in 2007. Tennessee was the leading producer state with 63 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 73 percent of production was airfloat, 16 percent was crude and 11 percent was water-slurried.

"The distinction between data suitable for process control and data subject to aliasing only becomes quantifiable with the availability of rapid real-time measurements. Expecting the dynamics of flotation to vary for different ore types, process flows and equipment types; a study was conducted to compare the dynamics of different flotation processes. The results shed light on the critical sampling intervals required for process control which in turn allows process stabilization and optimization. The technology used for the in-line measurements is based on diffuse reflective spectroscopy and has been introduced into the mineral processing industry over the past ten years. It has been widely implemented in the sulphide flotation industry in South Africa for the real-time measurement of grade.BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE A study was conducted by Du Plessis and Keet (2010) to quantify the minimum sample frequency required for grade and/or impurity control. The study was based on chromite data collected at 15 second intervals from the concentrate line of a flash float cell in the Platinum industry. The data captured the natural process variation of the entrained chromite through water recovery due to changes in feed parameters and flotation performance. It was found that the minimum rate of sampling required from the studied flash float concentrate was 2 minutes. This sampling interval time accounted for 90% of the variance in the process data. It was further found that a sampling interval time of longer than 4 minutes produced data with no significant correlation to reality. The dynamics of the flotation process has been misjudged in the past but can be quantified with the availability of real-time grade measurement based on diffuse reflective spectroscopy. The objective of the study was to compare the dynamics of different sulphide flotation processes through the comparison of maximum sampling interval times required to combat aliasing. All data were collected from single stream analyzers that are currently installed at mineral concentrators. The technology used is based on diffuse reflective spectroscopy."
