During the ABM Conference of 2015 the latest design and process features of the new 3-roll RSB® generation were presented together with a unique Size Control System SCS® for a real time closed loop control to produce an extraordinary quality SBQ – day in, day out. In the past two years, Kocks has focused on improving the repeatability of the rolling process and developed technology to enhance the performance of its equipment. These developments include Fast Remote Control (FRC), Stands Adjustable Under Load (AUL) implementation of closed loop Size Control System (SCS), and finally a state of the art laser Gauge (4D Eagle) that pulls all of these developments into a complete package of quality. Gauges used in the past generally operated with the “shadow” measuring system. The latest gauge developments are based on the “light section” method. This method is more suitable to provide real time measurement parameters of the rolled bar. Placed close to the last rolling stand, the “light section” gauge is capable of measuring around the complete diameter with a clear definition of the bar stage in relation to the axes of the rolls. It is also capable of making these measurements using a very high measurement frequency. Following requirements of the market, requiring the highest gauge measuring frequencies which display the bar in the most accurate way even at the highest rolling speeds, the “4D Eagle” gauge was developed. This paper describes all the process features and parameters of this impressive and unique newly developed gauge as well as the other described technical improvements.

Chatter is a widely studied vibration phenomenon that affects most cold mills around the world and its impact on these lines are tremendous: from productivity and quality losses to mechanical equipment damage. The investigation of its origins and how to minimize the occurrences and their impact on the equipment require special instrumentation and algorithms in order to have a detection of the vibrations as soon as they start. This paper presents three methods of identification of chatter on a Tandem Cold Mill and the actions to leave the vibration frequency range before its amplitude achieve catastrophic values.

In the integrated steel industries the sintering process plays an important role furnishing raw material to the blast furnace. In this work, a computational simulation of the sinter process is developed that is able to predict the most important phenomena within the sintering bed. The model is based on the multi phase concept with multiple components described by conservation equations of each component coupled with the momentum, chemical reactions and heat transfer. The model validation was carried out comparing the model predictions with averaged industrial data and local temperature measurements within the sinter strand. The model predictions presented good agreement with the averaged values measured on the industrial sinter process.

Foi desenvolvida uma metodologia de análise, classificação quanto a condição de conservação e priorização das atividades de inspeção, conservação e manutenção das estruturas metálicas e redes de distribuição de fluídos gasosos na ArcelorMittal Tubarão a fim de realizar a correta gestão destes ativos, com foco na minimização dos riscos e redução dos custos no longo prazo, além de contribuir para tomada de decisão estratégica nos orçamentos plurianuais. A Metodologia desenvolvida envolve uma análise em função da condição atual dos seus ativos, da degradação destes ao longo do tempo e dos recursos empregados ao longo dos anos para recuperação estrutural ou pintura preventiva, sendo a base fundamental para a geração de um ciclo de manutenção preventiva com visão centralizada, especializada e sistêmica.

A great amount of high temperature off-gas, whose maximum temperature is up to 2100?, is generated during the smelting process of electric arc furnace (EAF). The dust content, which is mainly iron oxide, of the off-gas is high and worthy of industrial recovery. The heat carried by the high temperature off-gas with dust is about 11% of the total energy input of EAF, and some even is as high as 20%. The high-temperature off-gas not only takes away a lot of heat but also places a huge burden to de-dusting system of EAF. It not only reduces the iron oxide dust recovery ratio, but also causes serious pollution problems. With the development of the iron and steel industry, the proportion of molten iron for EAF gradually increases, and even more than 30% in some cases. The increase of molten iron causes increases in the amount of EAF off-gas and heat waste. As a result the problem of dust removal is worsening [1-2]. How to sufficiently recover the sensible heat of the high temperature off-gas, create conditions for efficient dust removal, thus reduce operating costs of dust removal system and the production costs is a problem which EAF steel making companies must pay attention to.

As partículas de sínter (PSs), retidas no precipitador eletrostático dos estágios de sinterização em uma planta de aciaria, foram incorporadas até 20% em peso na argila caulinítica para produzir cerâmicas vermelhas porosas melhoradas utilizadas na construção civil. As amostras foram preparadas por prensagem uniaxial e depois sinterizadas a 750, 900 e 1050°C, que são temperaturas típicas para produção de tijolos, blocos e telhas. Após o processamento, foram avaliadas as propriedades mecânicas e microestruturas relacionadas à porosidade dessas cerâmicas. Os resultados revelaram, pela primeira vez, como a porosidade pode ser associada à melhoria da resistência da cerâmica vermelha processada a temperaturas típicas para produção de tijolos, blocos e telhas. Observou-se também a melhoria dos isolamentos acústico e térmico devido à porosidade dessa cerâmica.

A aciaria 1 da Usiminas Ipatinga é composta por 03 convertedores BOF e uso de ventaneiras para promover a melhor mistura do banho. No intuito de garantir e melhorar a estabilidade operacional da etapa sopro na produção, foi iniciado uma séria de desenvolvimentos na lança de oxigênio através da aplicação da tecnologia Slagless® com objetivos de melhorar a formação de escória, evitar cascão de lança, evitar cascão no sistema OG (recuperação de gases) e aumentar a disponibilidade de lanças através do aumento de sua vida. Os resultados apresentados são extremamente favoráveis, pois após a implementação da tecnologia, todos os objetivos foram atingidos associado com uma vida extremamente elevada do bico de lança, agora chamado cartucho, garantindo estabilidade e conforto operacional para a equipe da aciaria 1 da Usiminas Ipatinga.

O objetivo deste trabalho é demonstrar que a utilização da Metodologia Six Sigma e ferramentas de controle estatístico e gestão, são eficazes para controle processo, redução custos e estabilização de processos em geral. O coque dentre os custos variáveis do Circuito Polimetálicos, representa o maior custo para a unidade de Juiz de Fora e a oportunidade em otimizar sua utilização, foi identificada a partir do levantamento de dados e benchmark realizado. Observou-se que a média do consumo específico de coque grosso + coque fino no Forno Waelz, em 2012 era em média 360 Kg/t de pó de aciaria (PAE) tratado estava muito superior a outras empresas que utilizam a mesma tecnologia para tratamento de resíduos. Definiu-se então como meta do projeto atingir 210Kg/t PAE até 2014. Passando por todas as etapas de um projeto Six Sigma: Definir, Medir, Analisar, Melhorar e Controlar, todas as ações realizadas garantiram uma melhor performance da variável: consumo específico de coque, uma média acumulada em 2013 de 212,3 Kg/t PAE e 181,5 Kg/t PAE em 2014 proporcionando um custo evitado de R$ 11,6MM para a unidade.

Plasma assisted surface modification methods have been used to nitride stainless steels in order to enhance hardness and therefore the lifetime of industrial components. Nevertheless, the corrosion resistance is not always preserved since it is very sensitive to the process parameters, either in implantation or in thermochemical diffusion techniques. AISI 316L stainless steel was plasma nitrided using three different techniques: Low Energy Ion Implantation (LEII), Plasma Immersion Implantation (PI3) and conventional DC pulsed plasma nitriding (DCPN). For each method several parameters were tested and some of them were selected to achieve the so called S phase of about 3 µm thickness and no nitrides precipitation. The nitrided layer was characterized with OM and SEM. Hardness was assessed on the surface with Vickers indenter and 25 g load. XRD was performed to characterize the S phase and to detect other phases if present and electrochemical corrosion tests were carried out in 3.5% NaCl solution. Although the S phase thickness in the three groups of samples was comparable, hardness was not and neither was the corrosion resistance. The PI3 samples were the hardest with the best performance in corrosion experiments, resulting in a higher breakdown potential and lower currents.

At Rogesa in Dillingen, Germany, a joint venture company of AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke and Saarstahl AG and at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH in Salzgitter the sinterplants are equipped with the Paul Wurth EFA™ process for the final sinterplant off-gas cleaning. In Dillingen two and in Salzgitter one EFA™ plant are in operation at the respective sinterplants to comply with the very stringent environmental rules prevailing in Germany according to the German Clean Air Act called “TA Luft”. The main target is to eliminate or reduce emissions like dust, sulfur components, dioxins/furans and others in the sinter process off-gas. Since 2006 and 2011 the two EFA™ plant are in operation at Rogesa while the EFA™ plant in Salzgitter was also commissioned in 2011. These installations significantly contribute to the improvement of the emission situation of the Dillingen and Salzgitter Works. The EFA™ technology is the state-of-the-art process for such kind of application in terms of additive and energy consumption, reliability and availability. The report gives an overview of the EFA™ process and the performance results of the Dillingen and Salzgitter plant.

The hot blast stoves are a regenerative heat exchange system, accounting for 10 to 20% of the total energy requirement in an integrated steel plant, responsible for the supply of about one-third of the blast furnace heat input and responsible for a constant flow of hot air to the blast furnace, according to the required production. Because of their important role in the hot metal production, a stable operation and an appropriate combustion control is necessary. This paper aims to present the results of an investigation and modifications performed as an operating multi-furnace plant, as well as the parameters considered to ensure thermal equilibrium, improving in the stoves heating cycle.

Monitoring systems are highly critical components in the safety of tailings storage facilities (TSF). Internet of things (IoT) platforms present a unique way to improve TSF monitoring systems. Since there are so many available IoT technologies, this conference paper aims to create a focused list of IoT options for improving TSF safety. To achieve this aim, a brief qualitative review of available literature and state of the art technologies is presented in Section 2. The article further assists this aim by summarizing the benefits of IoT platforms which have been found in the literature. With respect to findings, literature suggests that while sensor technologies have existed as solutions for tailings dams for many years, IoT greatly reduces the cost of deploying, monitoring, maintaining, and gaining insight from these sensors. Additionally, IoT removes the need for manual data collection from sensors, enabling the monitoring of tailings dams from miles away and the use of new sensor technologies. Therefore, as a conclusion, this article recommends that IoT capable monitoring systems be considered for use in TSF monitoring.

En la producción de aceros limpios el control inclusionario es crítico para la obtención de un producto que cumpla con los requerimientos de calidad. El análisis de la distribución de tamaño de inclusión mediante modelos estadísticos permite estimar la incidencia de inclusiones en el producto solidificado a partir de mediciones tomadas en muestras relativamente pequeñas. En seis coladas de acero bajo carbono desoxidado con aluminio se tomaron muestras de acero a lo largo del procesamiento en horno olla y colada continua. Las muestras se prepararon para estimar mediante análisis metalográfico los tamaños de inclusión. Los datos de tamaño de inclusión se analizaron mediante modelos estadísticos de valores extremos, se hace una comparativa entre la distribución Gumbel (que forma parte de la norma ASTM E-2283) y la distribución Generalizada de Valores Extremos (GEV). Mediante una prueba de hipótesis con el estadístico Anderson-Darling, análisis de cuantiles y con la función de supervivencia se demuestra que la población inclusionaria se describe de una mejor manera con la distribución GEV. Finalmente se da un estimado de la incidencia probable de inclusiones en el producto solidificado.

Los aceros para armaduras de hormigón tienen que exhibir una buena relación entre resistencia y tenacidad que se ve reflejado en la performance del producto en servicio al ser aplicado a esfuerzos exigidos. Acerbrag es una empresa que produce aceros para la industria de la construcción teniendo en su gama los aceros de medio carbono para la fabricación de barras conformadas de dureza natural para armaduras en estructuras de hormigón. El objetivo de este trabajo es encontrar criterios de ventanas de trabajos operacionales y de control para la manufactura de aceros con buenas propiedades mecánicas en términos de resistencia y tenacidad. Este paper muestra los resultados de los trabajos realizados en las diferentes áreas productivas para conseguir un producto final con mayor resistencia a altas exigencias en servicio, además, reporta diferentes aspectos del proceso de manufactura del producto que van desde el ajuste de la composición química del acero, incluyendo criterios de propiedades mecánicas objetivos, criterios de calidad interna mostrando la microestructura de la barra antes y después de los cambios y finalmente la calidad dimensional y superficial de la barra nervurada, este último potenciando la falla prematura del material. Todos estos cambios, se ven reflejados finalmente en la performance de la barra, sometida a los nuevos criterios de exigencia en los ensayos mecánicos.

Driven by market trends, increasing environmental accountability, government regulations and fostered by the Company’s strategic plan, ArcelorMittal Tubarão has developed new steel products to deliver better solutions to fit each customer’s needs. This often translates in higher strength, more complex and dimensionally challenging (thinner and wider) steels to attend a broad array of goals, such as reduction of vehicles fuel consumption and carbon emissions, increase in fatigue performance of heat treated parts, higher load capacity per net weight in vessels or wagons and lower supplying lead time as ArcelorMittal Tubarão establishes itself as a domestic option for so far imported grades. Based on the annual Product Development Plan, a structured workflow involves technical discussions from an operational point of view about safety issues, metallurgical project, steel grade family definitions, offline simulations prior to field trials, deformation resistance and process parameters adjustments and scheduling strategy. As a result of the increasing synergy between the areas, the share of new materials developed in recent years has been sustainably increased up to 15% in 2018, adding value to the final product without impact on hot rolled coil output and with a low cobble index.

This paper describes the study of the work-roll during the hot rolling process thanks to a 3D model built with the Finite Element Method (FEM). In terms of computational cost, that method needs high resources compared to 1D model which are mostly used. However, the 3D model is built to have a better understanding of the work-roll thermal and mechanical behavior during the hot rolling process. The thermal model shows that the highest temperature reached during rolling are within the range of 500°C and 600°C. The thermal field input used to simulate the mechanical behavior of the work-roll shows a biaxial thermal stress state, in the circumferential and axial planes. However, a peak of radial stress is observed in the backup zone. It did not generate plastic strain but could influence the fatigue behavior of the work-roll.
