Conventional wire rod blocks have some limitations. They can only roll with fixed reduction ratios which always require the same rolling diameters within the block. With MEERdrive® SMS, as a pioneer, has introduced an innovative drive concept for wire rod blocks that can overcome the limitations of conventional solutions. The clue: the concept is based on individual drives for each stand position. The exigent wire rod market demand and the available technology melt in a new variant of MEERdrive®, the MEERdrive®PLUS, which represents a sizing block solution for finished size rolling and allows conventional as well as thermomechanical rolling. Saving energy and reducing pollution by minimizing emissions are today great challenges in the coking industry worldwide. In order to achieve satisfying results, equipment as well as technology should be continuously improved and updated. The most modern design tools should be adopted to maximize the coke production rate also ensuring the best coke quality. In this scenario, Paul Wurth is realizing the new coke making plant of CSPecem, Ceara - Brazil. These batteries are based on Paul Wurth “jumbo oven concept”. This solution incorporates all most modern features and design upgrading, in the aim of an easy and long-lasting operation putting a particular attention to environmental performances: the reduced number of ovens and the low number of pushing per day have the main effect of reducing pollution sources. Finally the paper will highlight Paul Wurth SOPRECO® System, which is foreseen to be installed in CSPecem batteries. SOPRECO®, which is capable of controlling the pressure for each individual oven in a coke oven battery, is thus able to reduce volatile emissions through doors, roofs and stand pipes up to 90%. The coke oven gas (COG) produced during the carbonization process is cleaned in a coke oven gas treatment plant to the level stipulated by applying the Best Available Technology (BAT).

Arcelor Mittal Asturias coking plant at Gijon works, Spain, is undergoing a complete modernization of the whole coke making complex. In this context, Gijon has to be considered a brownfield project, where Paul Wurth has been awarded with the engineering, supply of key equipment as well as erection and commissioning supervision services for the rebuild of two coke oven batteries the modernization of the adjacent by-product and relevant waste water treatment plants. Main objective of this paper is to present the technological improvements introduced by Paul Wurth in the rebuild of a modern plant focusing on fulfilling all the recent environmental regulations.

The Special Bar Quality family comprises a wide range of steel grades, mainly requested by the automotive, energy and engineering sectors, for applications where significant performances are required (eg. stresses, temperatures, working cycles, etc.). To meet these requirements it is necessary to reach a precise control of both the mechanical characteristics and metallurgy structures along the whole production chain. For semi-product with large dimensions, such as equivalent diameters around 300 mm, this is traditionally obtained through a manufacturing route which comprises the casting in ingots followed by reheating, forging and rolling. After 2010, new processes were investigated and technologies developed to replace the ingot route with a continuous casting followed by controlled high-reduction rolling. In these processes a seamless integration of CCM with rolling is implemented so to obtain the precise control of material flow, applied deformation and working temperatures. By using the proper combination of rolling diameter, speed and applied reduction, a very good control of the metallurgy structure across the whole section can be obtained, so to also remove the internal discontinuities ("voids") generated during the continuous casting. These processes, which can be defined "forging-like", are applicable to several grades also with large semi-product dimensions (300 mm and more). Besides, removing the ingot route means increased yield and productivity, which is very beneficial to the economical management of the plant. An example of this "forging-like" process is represented by the high-reduction blooming stand installed by Acciaierie Venete in the Padova-Camin mill. This article describes its main concepts as well as its technology and process features.

The Intelligent Furnace (I-Furnace) by SMS group is a smart furnace process and production optimization model. The combination of various tools leads to an optimized heat treatment and production process. It combines a mathematical/physical model to control the furnace with EMG’s IMPOC system for online strength measurement and a newly developed annealing microstructure model to predict material properties. This paper reports about the revamping of an existing galvanizing line, where a mathematical/physical control model has been implemented in combination with an online quality measurement system. This way, the process improvement of continuous galvanizing lines and the quality management of a range of steels including AHSS will be demonstrated. Furthermore, it gives information about the development of the annealing microstructure model to predict material characteristics. Eventually, the I-Furnace will be presented according to the current development and reference status.

The Blast Furnace Campaign lifetime is highly depending on the wear progress of the hearth lining. This progress is monitored in general through single and double thermocouples at the cold side of the lining. This type of monitoring becomes ineffective as soon as heat resistance will be formed in the refractory lining. Paul Wurth’s monitoring system, consisting of MTP-Sensor and Heat Flux Probes, is able to identify such heat resistances to give a true hearth lining wear. Since last year Paul Wurth is also able to install safely those MTP-Sensor and Heat Flux Probes on running blast furnace without salamander tapping, thanks to a newly developed cooled core drilling device. Blast Furnaces that are equipped with Paul Wurth’s monitoring system have optimized their campaign lifetime as they received right information upon the true wear lining such as detection of heat flux transfer failure, detection and monitoring of brittle layer or detection of hot spot.

Faced with an increasingly demanding and selective market, a thorough analysis of each step of the processes is required in order to achieve high levels of performance. In addition to a major factor of importance in the rolling process, due to its high price, the rolls represent one of the main items in the cost of hot coils production. Using the 6 sigma methodology, there were opportunities for improvement in the grinding process, fatigue analysis, improvement in NDT in rolls, as well as means to guarantee operational stability, which allowed the reduction of roll’s consumption and consequently the cost of production.

The hot blast system is key ancillary plant equipment with respect to safe and stable operations during a long blast furnace campaign. Hot blast stove designs have been optimized to such an extent that in some cases, their lifetimes have surpassed the campaign lengths of the associated blast furnaces by a substantial margin, with the exception of the burner and a few critical areas. This article presents recent developments with respect to designing, building new and operating existing hot blast systems for a long lifetime and at optimized performance. These developments include fundamental improvements such as dome combustion designs as well as increasingly comprehensive packages for inspection, assessment and maintenance techniques. Examples of such techniques are burner replacement with the hot blast system at operating temperature, improved double shell approaches and TOFD measurement applications.

Energy efficiency is coming to the center of attention in the metallurgical and rolling mill industry due to increasing energy costs, limited resources and political requirements. Also, a green image and energy efficient production is a clear competitive advantage. SMS Siemag, being familiar with automation and measurement equipment, provides an energy data management system which gives transparency over the energy consumptions. All energy relevant media including electricity, gas, water, compressed air and further more can be recorded. The system is manufacturer-independent and allows the use of already installed measuring technology with the possibility of subsequent extension. So potentials for improvement can be recognized and energy savings can be estimated and proven after the implementation of the measures. Technological developments, associated with the constant worry about the environmental impacts arising from industrial activity, it has driven the development of technologies and practices for efficient fumes and particulates capture arising from the manufacturing processes of steel in steel plants in general. Currently, the electric steelshops in operation with Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF), seek parameterize/design dedusting systems able to retain most of the particulates generated during melting and refining of steel in FEA through configurations of equipment, technologies and parameters operation in order to equalize the antagonistic relationship between effective fumes capture and energy balance of the EAF. The present work gets as a fundamental premise to evaluate critically the possible different settings of the usual dust removal systems, as well as their respective classical parameterizations. The work main purpose is to establish a general rule evaluation technique for dedusting system considering the different modes of operation of an Electric Arc Furnace.

In steel mills universal joint shafts, slipper spindles and gear spindles are used to overcome the design- and process- related offset between the axis of the motors and the work rolls. At the roll side the available space for the couplings is limited by the minimum work roll diameter. This leads to extremely high loaded components of the universal couplings especially at the roll side joints. Furthermore modern steel mills continuously strive to roll larger plates and materials with increased strength. This requires drive solutions with even higher torque capacity. For these applications conventional design joints are not sufficient anymore. Even alternative solutions such as hybrid- or offset- designs fall short. Therefore the companies Voith and BUMA Engineering developed together the new GearLink drive concept in close cooperation with the Voestalpine Grobblech GmbH. A completely new combination of universal joints and gear couplings offers an up to now unique solution enabling the use of 1,35- times bigger joint with a 2,5- times higher torque capacity and a 20- times longer lifetime. The GearLink system was first time successfully taken into operation at Voestalpine Grobblech in December 2013 and is up to now working without issue.

The lubricant oil is a complex mixture of different basestocks and additives. Engine oils evolved from the use of pure mineral basestocks back in the early years of automotive industry to the advent of synthetic, fully formulated, low ash lubricants. This evolution was driven by a number of factors, such as new engine designs, extended durability needs, increased fuel economy needs, environmental concerns, feedstock prices and availability and legal issues. This paper uses technology prospecting on literature and patents databases to allow an investigation on the historical evolution of engine oils. Main basestocks (mineral, hydrotreated, polyalphaolefins, esters) and additives (antioxidants, antiwear, friction modifiers, detergents and dispersants) are characterized according to their research effort. Technology prospecting data is crosschecked against the evolution of engine oil classes, allowing an analysis of how the main drivers push the development of lubricant oil quality. A research effort was identified in late 1990’s until mid-2000’s and related to the adoption of chemical limits for lubricants. Different patterns for the articles and patents publication account for the high value technological knowledge has in this industry. Technology prospecting is seen as a useful methodology for the understanding and forecast of lubricant technology movements.

The modeling of austenite evolution during the hot rolling of steels is covered in the literature for a wide range of chemical compositions, although mainly for carbon contents below 0.20%. In addition, most research on this topic is oriented for processes that are characteristic of flat products. Compared to those processes, the hot rolling of bars for structural applications presents considerable particularities concerning mainly deformation, rolling speed and rolling temperature profile. Those particularities result in considerable changes on process parameters that affect the austenite microstructure evolution, both in the softening and hardening mechanisms if microalloying elements such as Nb is present. The aim of this work was to develop a model to predict the evolution of austenite microstructure that is suitable for the hot rolling of structural reinforcing bars. Different torsion tests simulating industrial schedules particular from those type of processes were performed. The tests showed the need to investigate Nb strain-induced precipitation interaction with softening mechanisms that can occur during the deformation schedule. At the end, the new proposed kinetics and routines were introduced to a program, MicroSim-Bars®, that is able to model austenite evolution under structural bar hot rolling conditions.

Roll grade evolution in plate mill applications is traditionally following the development in hot strip mills. New grades normally find their way into service only after being successfully implemented in hot strip production. The majority of the plate mills worldwide are using work roll grades that have been invented before the 1980’s. But today the demands in the mills are pushed by sophisticated product mixes and longer rolling campaigns. The result of this development is a higher wear rate on the work rolls and as a consequence roll hardness is increased and advanced roll materials are used. The backup rolls are also affected by this. The wear rate is higher and the mechanical impact in terms of contact pressure and work hardening is increasing. This paper outlines the results of the roll grade development at Gontermann-Peipers and introduces new materials for work and backup rolls for plate mills.

Nowadays, due the development of new hot rolled strips at USIMINAS, established the necessity of realizing studies to define new parameters for the welding machine of new pickling line, in order to improve mechanical and metallurgical properties of these materials. The aim of this study was to evaluate the weldability of high strength low-alloy steel with low boron content with tensile strength above 600MPa.The influence of energy input and preheating temperature on the mechanical properties of hot rolled strips were analyzed at three distinct thickness (2, 4 and 6 mm). To perform these evaluations were used tensile test, micro-hardness, metallography (micro and macro examination) and scanning electron microscopy analysis. In resume, a good welding performance was achieved, increasing preheating temperature and the welding energy higher than 60%.

Deeper understanding about the strain hardening behavior of steels has become necessary due to its importance in industrial processes such as mechanical cold forming, rolling and drawing. In this work, the strain hardening behavior of AISI 304, non-grain oriented electrical (NGO) and dual phase steels was investigated. Tensile tests were performed and the strain hardening behavior of each steel was studied by the Hollomon’s equation. X-ray diffraction measurements and hardness tests were also carried out in order to characterize the specimens. Different work hardening stages were observed in each steel during the deformation process. The results obtained are discussed in terms of the relationship among the instantaneous strain hardening coefficient, hardness and eventual phase transformations. The instantaneous strain hardening coefficient of dual phase and NGO increases after the yield point, rapidly reaching its maximum and then steadily decreases until tensile strength is reached. In AISI 304’s case, the strain hardening coefficient keeps raising to high values in response to a large strain and then rapidly decreases before reaching the tensile strength. In comparison to the other steels, AISI 304 shows higher instantaneous strain hardening coefficient value, which persists even in large strains. This is a consequence of its strain hardening mechanism based on stress-induced martensite transformation.

The present work is a part of a comprehensive program that aims to evaluate the girth welding procedures for heavy wall API 5L X65 pipes produced for sour service applications. This article describes the results of toughness, strength and sour resistance of girth welds produced with different welding consumables. The methodology applied included girth welds production with GTAW process for root pass using ER70S-6 consumable and FCAW process for filling passes using E71T- 1CJ and E91T1-GM-H4 consumables. Mechanical tests of Charpy, CTOD, tensile, hardness and stress corrosion cracking were also performed. The E71T-1CJ resulted in a girth weld with tensile and yield strength around 7% lower than the pipe. However, according to the papers analyzed at this study, a value up to 10% of undermatching could be acceptable. The CTOD and Charpy tests showed good toughness and weld metal embrittlement was not observed. The hardness and the stress corrosion cracking tests demonstrated that the consumable ER70S-6 is suitable for sour service. All properties evaluated met the requirements specified by the onshore pipeline standards, showing that the consumables ER70S-6, E71T-1CJ and E91T1-GM-H4 are suitable for the welding of heavy wall X65 pipe with sour service and toughness requirements. If an overmatching is required, the E91T1-GMH4 shall be used to assure a strength overmatching and prevent plastic strain concentration at the weld metal. The results provided by this paper can be used for consumable selection and for welding procedure qualification of pipelines construction when heavy wall API 5L X65 are used for sour gas transportation.
